PLOD
ebba Established by founding director Benni Allan, the London-based architecture and design firm prioritizes simple elegance and a strong sense of materiality. Those concerns extend to Ebba's products, including Plod, made from resin-infused paper. The mottled surface and mahogany-like Redstone hue highlight both the stool’s construction and its unique material. The top is CNC milled, while the three cylindrical legs are turned on a traditional lathe. Simple joints allow for flat-pack shipping. At nearly 18 inches tall, Plod works as a side table as well as a small perch. 1stdibs.com/dealers/ebba-architects

CHRISTOPH BRACH, DANIERA TER HAAR
The way we sit affects our mood and our thoughts. And seating pieces have an outsize influence on the look and feel of a room. Contemplating these givens, Dutch industrial design duo Raw Color—aka Christoph Brach and Daniera ter Haar—posed a question: “Why can’t a seat be a piece of art when not in use?” The resulting Link is a wonder of whimsy. Lending itself to play as well as lounging, the sculptural sofa embodies the spirit of connection through its chain-link form; modules can be adjoined via integral zips. Link is available in a range of colors as well as a multitone version. Through Lepere. lepereinc.com, sancal.com

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: VALENTINA SOMMARIVA; LUCA MERLI
The multidisciplinary work of Illinois-born fashion designer and cultural force Virgil Abloh is currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum, after the groundbreaking exhibition premiered at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Not on display, however, is his collaboration with Cassina, Modular Imagination. Abloh, who earned a master’s degree in architecture, completed the object just before his untimely death last year. Whether used as a bench, a pouf, a table, or something else, the unit—upholstered in painted elastomer-coated polyurethane—can function to connect and unite a room. Dubbed a “building block” by the late designer, Modular Imagination is stackable via connecting pegs (in jaunty orange powder-coat). The 18-inch-tall block is available in two lengths: 18 or 30½ inches. Bas reliefs on each surface spell out Cassina-Abloh. cassina.com

gubi Originally commissioned by a rattan furniture manufacturer and first produced in the 1960s, Joe Colombo’s Basket has returned to production decades later. The rattan base cradles a plump upholstered seat, back, and arm cushions, making for a rigorous yet playful (and totally timeless) form. Handwoven elements add a distinctive texture to the design, available as a lounge chair, a love seat, and a sofa. Upholstery options include both indoor and outdoor fabrics, and the cushions are removable. gubi.com

EAMES WIRE CHAIR
EAMES WIRE BASE LOW TABLE EAMES MOLDED PLASTIC ARMCHAIR
It’s no surprise that Rolf and Mette Hay, the husband-wife cofounders of Danish design brand Hay, are big fans of Charles ROLF HAY, METTE HAY and Ray Eames, given that many of their company’s collections have been influenced by the midcentury design duo. It’s also unsurprising that a launch bringing Hay’s ethos to the Classic Eames series would be a big hit. The pair dug into the archives to create the Eames Collection, which brings forward-looking new hues to icons including the wire chair, the wire base low table, and the molded plastic armchair. They also reimagined the Hang-It-All in cast-glass balls. hermanmiller.com, us.hay.com

Most recently, she teamed up with product development director and daughter Andrea Pérez Hoyos to create the Lua lounge, evoking both womanly curves and the crescent moon. That yielded a distinctive swooping seat and back, supported by three legs of solid Seike wood carved with geometric detailing. society of wonderland Stephanie Eventov’s vibrant aesthetic is informed by her many interests, which range from textile arts and architectural geometry to disco, fashion design, and photography. She brings these disparate inspirations together at Society of Wonderland, the Brooklyn studio she founded in 2015. Take the woven textiles collection Series .21. Its five performance upholstery fabrics channel midcentury art and architecture through flowing shapes and rich hues. Jazzy Pierre mixes orderly lines and ovals; Atelier has abstract blocks of colors; and triangles and trapezoids mingle in Tango. SHEER
The textile maker gets philosophical with Quotes, a residential collection of 16 curtains and six rugs. It explores the interplay between cities and nature through the thoughtful use of graphics and material, aiming to connect interiors with the outdoors. Belgian artist Alain Biltereyst helped translate these ideas into 11 of the designs, including Untitled AB1, a fil coupé curtain woven of recycled Trevira CS spun yarns. “I want people to discover the beauty of the everyday—not only the natural landscapes but also the human-made forms and signs,” Biltereyst says. Meanwhile, Sheer, a semi-transparent cotton curtain by creative director Isa Glink, brings a soft, organic feel to even the most austere urban space. NICK CAVE BUTTON GUISE
“Textiles are central to much of my work, and I love how they influence a space. This collection is another way for people to access my art and share my energy”
knolltextiles Missouri-born artist and educator Nick Cave started creating Soundsuits in 1992 in response to the beating of Rodney King by Los Angeles police officers. The wearable sculptures—of which there are more than 500—cover all but a person’s feet, concealing their race, gender, and class. Each is unique and WIRE, BIG FLORAL made of beads, hairs, sequins, and found objects. Soundsuits and other Cave sculptures were the starting point for the exuberant 10-piece Nick Cave Collection, a collaboration with KnollTextiles that celebrates the artist’s creative process. It includes Button, a Trevira CS polyester drapery; wallcoverings Wire and Big Floral; and Guise, a layered polyester-wool upholstery that references a beaded Soundsuit.

The performance textile specialist pays homage to iconic paintings with the eight-pattern collection Modern Art, which draws on the Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art movements to create statement-making upholstery fabrics. The playful designs include acrylic-polyester blends like Rubix, a graphic Mondrian-esque design; Jackson, with swirling lines evocative of Pollock’s drip paintings; abstract Toggle; and pointillist Pop. Rothko, whose thick stripes recall color-field paintings, is 100 percent acrylic. A collaboration between Sunbrella and United Fabrics design director Lindsey Josepayt, the indooroutdoor fabrics come in bold colorways ranging from lemon and rust to gray and beige. Measuring 54 inches wide, Modern Art is durable and stain-resistant, and holds its vibrant hues even in high-traffic spaces. Through United Fabrics. unitedfabrics.com

Proving its commitment to sustainability, the New York textile company introduces three upholstery fabrics made entirely of preand post-consumer recycled wool, acrylic, and polyester. The fibers all began as discarded garments and textile waste; they got sorted by color, shredded, and spun together to create complex mélange yarns. Creative director Suzanne Tick prototyped the designs on her looms in Manhattan and worked with a women-owned mill in Italy to create the final products. The results are Graph Speck, a broken twill; Melange Check, a contemporary glen plaid; and Wool Fleck, a plain weave. All are available in multiple deep colorways and are suitable for commercial and hospitality spaces. luumtextiles.com

“Piezo is a visually striking cut velvet with relief in the pile areas and a micro geometric pattern referencing old insert cards for jacquard looms”
designtex Director of design Catherine Stowell merged art and technology in creating Piezo. The luxurious and durable cut velvet (a polyester-rayon blend) is named for Epson’s Micro Piezo inkjet print-heads, which enabled Stowell and her team to create super-detailed geometric patterns using fiber-reactive dyes. The 57-inch-wide design, in five colorways including Madrid, references an earlier innovation: the punch cards used in jacquard looms. Prefer a solid look? The fall collections also include the tactile Hillside, a high-performing solution-dyed olefin—it withstands 100,000 double-rubs—suitable for outdoor environments and available in 18 brilliant shades. In other news: Designtex has just moved into a sunny new headquarters in downtown Manhattan designed by Standard Issue. designtex.com

Natalia Miyar’s first collection with the British wallcovering brand grew out of a 2019 installation for the art fair Masterpiece London. Miyar, a Cuban-American interior designer based in that city, was asked to create a design for the fair’s dining room. She took inspiration from a 1943 painting by Cuban artist Wifredo Lam, The Jungle, and worked with Fromental to translate its striking colors and geometries into an abstract waxed wallpaper, Ambia. Its four colorways include Vedado, whose vibrant shades of turquoise, blue, and green—plus hand-applied gold foil—embody “the energizing spirit of the Caribbean,” Miyar says. Ambia comes in standard 10-by-3-foot panels as well as custom sizes (and colors). fromental.co.uk

For her latest collection, Impressions, Los Angeles–based textile designer Brook Perdigon aimed to create modern floral patterns inspired by her grandparents’ 1970’s beach house. Old photos, a retro sofa, and childhood drawings informed the nostalgic line of Irish linens. A visual artist by training, Perdigon began by making sketches and collages of floral motifs, and worked closely with an L.A. printer to maintain their watercolor effect in three digitally printed designs. A highlight of the collection is Tropics, which is based on Perdigon’s girlhood paintings of her mother’s pansy garden. Available in yellow ochre, turquoise, seaglass, and plum colorways, the playful free-flowing pattern has a 17-by-27-inch repeat and can be used for soft goods, drapery, and upholstery. brookperdigontextiles.com

NEVER DESIGN ALONE.
Following in the bold, unpredictable, and wildly eccentric life of Florence Broadhurst, these statement patterns demonstrate courage to express individuality and to follow your bliss, even if you are ahead of your time by being the only one - the trend setter, the tastemaker. Like Florence’s flamboyant life, great design can be both unconventional and uniquely luxurious.

For its inaugural collection, Narrative Arc, the Dallas-based studio wanted to explore the ways craft and contemporary design intersect—and forged some new ideas in the process. Founders Mackenzie Lewis and Tanner Moussa think of their pieces as functional art. Arches, circles, and waves found throughout the collection pay homage to the handcraftsmanship of master artisans. Rounded shapes are a nod to French Deco, here reimagined with influences from Moussa’s Egyptian heritage. Details bring an element of surprise, says Lewis, such as Cupola, a credenza which hides a soft-close drawer for silver or cutlery in the center case; and Cusp, a cabinet with sculpted pulls that emerge organically from the door edges, quietly inviting you to touch. mousstudio.com

æquó A 2019 conversation in Paris about the lack of collectible design in India led to the establishment of this design gallery in the historic district of Colaba, Mumbai. Founder Tarini Jindal Handa and creative director Florence Louisy wanted to connect global minds with Indian resources, envisioning a dialogue between a network of skilled artisans and international designers—the result being a striking collection of custom furniture and interior objects. The open and airy space is by architect Ivan Oddos, who installed both a gallery and two workshops in the historic building. The debut showcase, Aliante, highlights eight pieces by Louisy—a Design Academy Eindhoven graduate—that utilize techniques including pottery and embroidery, with bronze pieces cast in Mumbai, carved oak furniture built in Mysore, and linen rugs hand-knit in Uttar Pradesh. aequeo.in

As a surfer, Philadelphia-based glass artist Pomp finds inspiration in the natural elements, including the constant motion of waves. Back in his studio, he captures the fluidity of glass in its liquid state, turning the molten material into handcrafted lighting and furniture pieces. The Caldera side table suggests a powerful cause and effect: that hot glass has been poured onto solid metal, which deforms as a result of its heat and weight. In reality, the dish shape in the table is hand-formed first, and the liquid material is then cast into the depression. It’s a clever deceit that appears to freeze a primordial moment. The glass is available clear or with incandescence, the metal in a burnished or brushed silver, black nickel, or blackened steel finish. johnpomp.com JOHN POMP

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DAVIS FURNITURE
A Modular Solution for the Modern Workplace BY DANINE ALATI
With its working lounge collection Cantina, Davis responds to how people of today actually work. Today’s office environment differs vastly from the corporate climate of just a few years ago. Formal offices have given way to more casual workplace settings, as people have learned that they can work any and everywhere—at a café or an airport lounge or their living room sofa. Now workspaces demand flexibility to accommodate how people actually want to work while still requiring furniture designed to support occupants in ways that improve their productivity, concentration, and comfort. Recognizing this evolution of the office landscape, Davis Furniture commissioned German design duo jehs+laub to create a modular seating collection that supports today’s casual work styles. The resulting Cantina Collection is part lounge seating, part café furniture, and part workspace solution. From freestanding backless benches to U-shaped booth configurations, Cantina’s casual, slender silhouette and high functionality provide a timely solution for workplace applications and beyond. Cantina functions equally as well in a university student center as a bustling café or a modern corporate environment. The high-back booths create niches for quiet concentration or smaller meetings, while the mid-back benches and L-shaped units facilitate collaborative working. The working-height seat of all the units provides the optimal sit for end-users, allowing them to work more effectively and ergonomically than with a traditional lounge seating unit. The Riza Table Collection, also designed by jehs+laub, was released alongside Cantina to provide a coordinating series that offers solutions for an appropriate worksurface while complementing the lounge’s slim, organic form. Constructed of a steel base, plywood frame with steel supports, and molded and multi-density foam for its seat and back cushions, Cantina was aptly designed for flexibility in how and where designers can specify it. The plywood frame allows its length to be customized during specification, while its geometric base can be specified in more than 30 powder coat colors. Thanks to its modern, minimal aesthetic and high functionality in an array of applications, Cantina won a Best of NeoCon award, adding to the roster of award-winning collaborations between jehs+laub and Davis Furniture. davisfurniture.com/products/cantina

FUTURE FOSSILS
A new collection by Canada’s Simon Johns, who lives and works in tiny East Bolton, a municipality of 1,000 people in southern Quebec, cleverly explores rocklike formations, extrusions, and voids. Among the pieces in his Future Fossils series: an occasional chair and a mirror made of gypsum cement, an aluminum and gypsumcement shelving unit, and a low table in polished aluminum and slip-cast stoneware. The pieces are functional furniture but collectible art, too; they seem to celebrate traces of something lost. simonjohns.com

PANTOP PORTABLE
Ring the bell for Pantop Portable, the new take-anywhere version of Verner Panton’s 1980 lamp with the dramatically flared shade. The portable light can now charge with a micro USB cable for seven hours of operating time. The painted polycarbonate body also gets an update in trending colors such as dusty blue and terracotta, plus matte and gloss options. But where’s the switch? Simply touch the brushed-metal knob on the top of the jaunty bell-shape shade to turn the lamp on or off, or to adjust the level of illumination. verpan.com

STITCH
cp lighting product Stitch standout These loopy lights are the product of
technological advances “I have been promoting the idea of organic and irregular forms in lighting and furniture for decades,” says designer Christopher Poehlmann. “Stitch is my response to the technology of LED rope lighting catching up to my minimalist sensibilities.” Rope lights have been around for many years; however, recent advances in continuous linear LED tape and silicone molding have resulted in light tubes that emit an even 360 degrees of light with no shadowing or pinpoint effect. In Poehlmann’s Stitch series of lamps and pendants, in sizes up to 30 inches wide and 7 feet high, flexible light rope passes through and around an aluminum armature, making intricate shapes. The LED tube can even be reconfigured by the client if desired, allowing the piece to take on different looks over the course of its lifecycle. cplighting.com

prolific at many forms of design (retail spaces, furniture, etc.) but above all, he’s drawn (ahem) to drawing. “It could be a gesture in the sand with a stick, the intricate decor of a cathedral facade, or a kid drawing for her mom, but we need to draw,” he hypothesizes of humankind. Mannino’s latest launch is a rug series featuring terrazzo patterns drawn by his own hand then produced in Nepal, also by hand, using natural wool and dyes. Mannino previously worked extensively with radical design masters Ettore Sottsass and Remo Buti. It’s perhaps no surprise, then, that his doodled evocation of traditional stone flooring has a certain Memphis or pop art flair. sergiomannino.com

For their latest flooring collection, the duo was inspired by French director Claire Denis’s groundbreaking 1999 film, Beau Travail. The 101-year-old rugmaker collaborates with French product designer Matali Crasset to realize Watershed, a rug whose dynamic MATALI CRASSET geometric patterning embodies the idea of flow. The composition, which emerged from the designer’s investigations of landscapes, was conceived to foreground humanity’s increasingly problematized relationship with our liquid terrain. “Water creates a territory that enables nature to grow,” Crasset says. “I wanted to explain this connection and to show how water is becoming more and more essential every day.” Crafted of semi-worsted New Zealand wool and silk via classic Tibetan knot technique, the limited-edition piece—just two were produced—was commissioned by CGN Gallery in Querétaro, Mexico, whose program fosters critical discussion and production of contemporary design. odabashian.com

relax design Sleek geometry meets sultry, luminous coloration in the Italian company’s White Label bath collection, which encompasses washbasins, shower trays, accessories, and tubs—such as this dramatic freestanding beauty that seems carved from a block of Arctic ice. Designed by Naples-based Zetae Studio, the glasslike unit is actually injection-molded of Lumenit, a proprietary lightfiltering solid-surface material developed by the company’s inhouse lab. “It’s an homage to the classic pasta icon”
ELISA OSSINO, GABRIELE SALVATORI
salvatori Serving up its first tapware collection, the Milanese brand took cues from an Italian classic: Spaghetti. Tasty indeed, the design by Elisa Ossino pairs circular stone handles with a simple tubular spout that recalls its namesake noodle. The stone inset can be customized to match surrounding surfaces, while the metal components sport an elegant gunmetal finish applied via PVD, an eco-friendly process that vaporizes metals in a vacuum chamber, resulting in a sleek and uniform look. “The handle’s texture reproduces the long, thin shape through a repeated undulating pattern that is the result of a meticulous engineering process carried out with a watchmaker’s precision,” explains CEO Gabriele Salvatori, son of the company founder. Some designs in the collection have a very thin 20mm cartridge while others have “easy fit” technology and can be installed flush with the surface for a pared-down look. Spaghetti encompasses shower fittings as well as taps and mixers for sinks, bidets, and tubs. Buon appetito! salvatoriofficial.com

“What I love most about cement is its penchant for gentle imperfections”
Katie Deedy, who founded her Brooklyn-based company in 2007, likes telling stories with her designs, and in the case of her latest cement tile collection, the overarching narrative is to “bring playfulness and cheer,” she explains. Tiles roughly 8 inches across are handcrafted by layering Portland cement, marble powder, and natural pigments—and are made to last a lifetime. Suitable for walls and floors, indoors and out, the series is available in a trio of, er, tales: Lemonade is about transformation, turning the too-often bitter aspects of life into something sweet; Fresa offers the sunny warmth of summer all year long; and Alexandria is an ode to the ancient Library of Alexandria, an “eye of knowledge,” as well as a symbol of good luck, Deedy notes. They are certain to inspire interesting conversations, especially in custom colorways. growhousegrow.com

UNIT
reform Great-looking systems that can accommodate—and enhance—hybrid living are always welcome in our book. To create Unit, a system equally suited to the kitchen and the home office, the Copenhagen-based company tapped rising designers Hans Toft Hornemann and Terkel Skou Steffensen of Aspekt Office. “Our creative process began by researching classic Danish cabinetmaking,” the pair explain. The result is a fresh take with a warm touch. The duo’s starting point? The handle, which they wanted to be minimal yet eye-catching and durable. Hence the die-cast aluminum pull, offered in various finishes, is milled to the front of the cabinets, which come in toned-down but still vibrant options: dark or natural oak or a painted finish (available in various hues). Counters come in laminate, Silestone, and solid wood. Choose different finishes for the base and upper cabinets, or extend the same style from the kitchen to the WFH space for the ultimate in design continuity. reformcph.com

kvadrat Utilizing very few materials and boasting an ease of assembly, installation, and use, it is no wonder Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s new roller blind system is dubbed Minimal. The crux of the design is an ingenious bracket— made from a single piece of folded steel available in numerous colors—that allows the user to swap out the textile without taking down and disassembling the entire system. It comes in three standard sizes as well as custom widths, in pull and motorized versions (the latter with hidden wiring and mechanicals integrated invisibly into the roller blind tube). What’s more, Kvadrat is launching a carbon neutrality tool to support designers’ sustainability goals, allowing them to measure how long it will take to hit the carbon-neutral break-even point when using one of its products. kvadrat.dk

QUARTER CIRCLE
baux The addition of Quarter Circle to the Acoustic Wood Wool Tiles collection is the kind of curve we don’t mind being thrown. With it, the Stockholm-based company greatly increases its myriad options of possible patterns for acoustic applications. The versatile system— providing sound absorption, fire resistance, moisture regulation, and more—is sustainable and recyclable, made from a combination of wood wool, cement, and water. Depending on how it’s used, the product can introduce a minimalist, geometric feel or a flowing, organic vibe. The square tiles come in two sizes—11 and 23 inches—and more than 20 colors (plus custom). They can be used alone or mixed with one of the eight existing shapes in the collection. baux.com

“We matched design irreverence and joy with easily repurposed solid aluminum panels to create a functional multiuse product for interior spaces everywhere”
With positive-and-negative rows of geometric shapes in bold colors, these panels look exceptionally playful. But they are serious business: At the Easthampton, Massachusetts, factory of this second-generation, family-owned company, a large-bed industrial metal-cutting fiber laser crafts the solid aluminum sheets. The standard 4-by-8-foot panels can cover walls—or become them. The eight patterns, including rows of ovals and diamonds, come in seven powder-coats, including brick, tangerine, and sea foam; layer them slightly out of alignment to achieve concentric levels of tone and form. No matter the option, the customizable sheets are ideal for vertical and light-duty horizontal use in hospitality, retail, and corporate spaces. chemetal.com

kolorit Even in a time of great global conflict, beauty still prevails. To wit: A collaboration between Kyiv-based Makhno Studio and Ukrainian sustainable paint company Kolorit, which produces shades according to the design firm’s specifications for use in its interiors projects—and yours. The line, called Ukraine. Home, is the result of studio founder Serhii Makhno’s extensive research into color characteristics, with the intent to introduce the country’s interior sensibilities to the world at large. Each hue is emblematic of peace, nature, and the typical aspects of daily life that one enjoys in Ukrainian culture. Colors were partially derived from a comforting, neutral palette Makhno Studio developed during the pandemic, and that the designers believe will be versatile for decades to come. SHOU SUGI BAN
The centuries-old shou sugi ban technique used to char wood siding and paneling not only offers rot resistance and moisture protection but also amplifies the material’s natural grain and weathered texture to the point where it becomes a graphic element. The act of further brushing the wood to accentuate these qualities, a process called yakisugi, produces truly one-of-a-kind results. Pioneer Millworks applies both these techniques to a range of sustainable domestic species from New York and Oregon: larch, FSCcertified Douglas fir, and FSC-certified accoya. The company’s Shou Sugi Ban millwork is applicable both indoors and out, for feature walls, fireplace wraps, shiplap, siding, and more. The 20-plus color options range from black and punchy red to neutral grays and even a very modern white.

The available upholstery prints and colors are just as playful, including an interlocking graphic black-and-yellow Capri and soft pastels. The seating collection, encompassing sofa, armchair, and pouf-as-ottoman, is the brainchild of the Italian designer Mario Marenco, who originally dreamed it up in 1970. Shaped cushions are supported by a metal-and-plywood structure. Through Property. propertyfurniture.com, arflex.it MARENCO OUTDOOR
