Designed by Khodi Feiz of Feiz Design Studio, the options lend themselves to individual work or small collaborative group settings. The U.S.-made collection’s name is Dutch for “dragonfly,” an influence visible in the winglike 3D-knit semi-transparent screen of the high lounge. jacobsroom The latest from the Rome-based studio, the O chaise—an extension of the samenamed furniture collection—has an architectural bearing and a natural inspiration: the terraced thermal pools of Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in western Turkey. (The landmark’s name translates to “cotton castle,” a nod to the sugar-spun travertine hillside.) The seat’s curved, stacked waterfall-style backrest is “evocative of the dreamlike lagoons found there, their astonishing circular silhouettes and hues of sand and brine,” brand designer Kathrin Charlotte Bohr notes. gubi Do you know Guilty By Association? It’s a new organization created with a worthy mission: to improve equity in the art world by supporting under-the-radar and underrepresented artists via commissions, sales platforms, and marketing opportunities. GBA launched with the exhibit “Hey What’s Up?” at its Downtown Brooklyn headquarters, displaying 19 chairs reimagined by streetwear pioneer Camella Ehlke with upcycled textiles. Ehlke, founder of cult label 555Soul, used cut-up pieces of discarded jeans and other fabrics to dress the rattan frames of Tove Kindt-Larsen’s 1936 Grace chairs for Gubi. (She notes that denim, like rattan, is a material that acquires character as it ages.) The fashionista’s adventures in furniture began three years ago, when conversations with Virgil Abloh inspired her to reinvent pieces via deadstock textiles; the OffWhite designer, who passed away last year, even sent Ehkle 40 yards of overstock from his Milan warehouse to kick-start her practice. gubi.com

stackabl This new initiative, a joint effort between Maison Gerard and Stacklab, is an online configurator that users can leverage to design custom furniture from high-quality offcuts—remnant inventory (currently metal, wood, and felt)—generated by regional manufacturers. To launch the tool, Stackabl brought together several high-profile designers with a common intent: “Turning waste into wonders.” Utilizing layers of high-quality felt offcuts, manufactured with the aid of robotics, the designers drew from historical and personal seating references to craft contemporary perches both distinctive and welcoming. The Dulces dining chair by Laura Kirar pairs the felt offcuts with maple legs. Elena Frampton’s Fast Lane accents the material with legs of blackened maple. Featuring the same wood for its base, the Madame chaise lounge by Jamie Drake and Caleb Anderson sports a strip of bumble-gum pink. The Maxine bench by Benoist F. Drut combines natural maple legs with unexpected orange, lime, and sky-blue color combinations. Raki by Alexandra Champalimaud, inspired by the playful energy of a family pet, fits perfectly into a corner. And the chunky maple legs of the Querelle club chair, by William T. Georgis and Ilya Mirgorodsky, pair with playful blue-and-white felt. All six options are true conversation starters. Through Maison Gerard. maisongerard.com

The Irish-born New York designer, whose work plumbs the intersection of high-tech and handcrafted, unveils Zephyr, an armchair epitomizing that dichotomy. Its backrest doubles over on itself to form a sort of modernist apron, while the seat and base wrap to enfold a wood cylinder. From the front, the seat is a classic; from the side, it has a futuristic and mysterious bearing—you can’t quite make out what it is. Measuring 28 inches across, deep, and high, the sculptural piece “further develops the cantilever and cylindrical forms found in other works in this series,” Egan notes. Shown here with her Second Empress coffee table, Zephyr comes in two versions: one crafted entirely of ebonized accoya, the other with white bouclé upholstery and beech accents. When it comes to Swurve, we fully considered the carbon impact from design to end of life. We started by selecting materials with low carbon features, then completed a third-party ISO 14044 Life Cycle Assessment to calculate our carbon impact and verify our program. We then offset the inevitable carbon by investing in offset credits that support third-party verified carbon-reduction projects. Built with extreme craftsmanship, to the highest environmental standards, Swurve is a chair we can all feel great about.

Berlin-based architect David Saik spearheaded the conversion of a former sewing factory, working alongside company owner Gregg Buchbinder and his daughter, Jaye Buchbinder, Emeco’s head of sustainability. The purpose is not to blatantly showcase the company’s products, but to contribute to the architecture/design discourse. “It’s a conversation place,” Jaye notes. That said, innovative conversation-starters are certainly on display. To wit: the Alfi Works swivel chair, a new extension of Jasper Morrison’s versatile collection that expresses simplicity in seating. Recycled aluminum composes the base, recycled polypropylene the seat. For a softer touch in a home office, upholstered versions are also available. emeco.net

CROSSOVER

filzfelt German designer Bernd Benninghoff was trekking through villages along the Swiss Alps, in a camper van, when inspiration struck for Crossover. He noticed a house with a layered woven-look facade, a textural effect that fascinated him. He transformed that image into a modular wool design felt with abundant three-dimensionality. Available in 2-foot square modules, the product can be specified in no fewer than 96 felt colors (and 2 substrate choices). The tiles absorb sound—and installation is a breeze. Based in Lititz, Pennsylvania—an Amish Country town known for its rock concert rehearsal venues—Spacekit is an offshoot of production design studio Atomic. When the pandemic shut down live events, Atomic pivoted from creating stages for MTV to making wall art for homes. The original line includes graphic designs like Turns; the 9.8or 19.7-inch square panels are a cinch to install and can be removed and reconfigured easily. Now Spacekit offers sustainable acoustic panels as well. Conceived by Tom McPhillips and Rob Barber, the designs—including blocky Geo-Shapes, angular Patchwork, and Josef Albers-inspired Roundhaus and Squarehaus—are made in the U.S. of 0.4-inch-thick felt, recycled HDPE plastic, and a wood alternative composed of upcycled rice hulls. MATHIEU GIRARD

la chance Designed by Mathieu Girard, Lussas wallpaper is graphic and striking. It was inspired by photographs of mountains and sky, taken in Ardèche, France, and overlaid upon each other like a card game. The product is available is three patterns, named for cardinal directions (South, East, and West), and in four colors, corresponding to hours of the day (2am, 6am, 3pm, and 9pm). 3pm is a cool sandy hue, while other ones are vibrant blues and a soft blue-gray. Measuring 19 ½ inches wide, the nonwoven paper is composed of cellulose with synthetic fiber and an acrylate binder. Through Property. propertyfurniture.com 50

thatcher Designer Avery Thatcher—founder of Juju Papers—launches a new brand name alongside the unveiling of Mother. Inspired by the shimmering kaleidoscopic film used in fishing lures, Thatcher developed a reflective wallcovering that shifts subtly under varied lighting situations and as different objects are placed in front of it. The name alludes to the properties of mother-of-pearl, glowing and distinctive yet organic and grounding. The wallcovering, made of an iridescent Mylar film with a nonwoven backing, is suitable for commercial and residential spaces. It is also Climate Neutral certified. Available in a single evanescent colorway, Mother is 54 inches wide. thatcherstudio.com

weitzner product Pergola designer Lori Weitzner standout An earthy, artisanal take on geometric patterning

From the designer’s Uplift collection, described as “a celebration of resilience, forward momentum, and the optimism that finer days lie ahead,” comes this geometric wallcovering reminiscent of fretwork. The tactile play on positive and negative space is handcrafted of a combination of rapidly renewable Abaca and mulberry fibers that invites the touch. “With the time-old tools of color, texture, and pattern, we created materials that engage the senses and evoke curiosity, calm, and beauty,” Weitzner summarizes. The 48-by-96-inch panels come in four colors. weitznerlimited.com

Six colorways include the pinktinted Flame and the gray-and-mauve Gleam, as well as Lumen, Float, Crosslight, and Bend. furniture The Australian designer offers an elevated take on recycled materials with Arc, a collection of tables, benches, stools, and bookcases in bold primary/secondary colors plus cream. (Custom hues are also possible.) Forms are reminiscent of arch bridges and have a strong geometric presence owing to repetition of line. Assembled using removable rods and bolts instead of glue, the ingenious designs are easy to dismantle and reconfigure. You can vary the way the individual sections overlap to adjust the length of the Arc tables and benches, suiting different needs and spaces. On the collection’s Cloud bookcase, shelves can also be placed at different heights. Because the postindustrial-recycled plastic is UV stable and moisture resistant, the pieces are suitable for both outdoor and indoor use. zacharyfrankel.com

Triada’s die-cast aluminum base culminates in three minimalist “blades” that, he explains, “transition smoothly to the floor, conveying great workmanship through this expressive geometry.” Options are many: three heights (bar and dining versions plus a heightadjustable occasional table), three shades for the base (black, white, and polished), and a choice of oak, lacquer, laminate, ultra-matte, or linoleum for the circular top with cut-out handle. translated into leather and aluminum The Aurora Borealis is caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with the Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating a captivating dance of light in the night sky. Tuscan architect Roberto Lazzeroni has recreated the phenomenon as a striking tripartite screen, an interplay of woven leather bands within hinged, paintedaluminum frames. The bands themselves are composed of two different colors of leather, bonded to one another then folded and stitched together at their points of intersection. WORKS OF SOBRIETY

haos

ANTONI CIUFO

For their new furniture collection, called Works of Sobriety, Sophie Gelinet and Cédric Gepner, who co-founded the Paris-based design studio in 2017, looked to seemingly unrelated (yet very much linked) sources for inspiration. The Danish filmmaking movement Dogme 95, which eschewed special effects and gimmicks, provided an anchor for their intentions. And from Japanese architecture came the concept of harmony through the juxtaposition and contrast of humble materials. Here, plywood and sheet metal are joined using uncomplicated techniques. The 10-piece collection, which debuted at New York’s Love House this spring, encompasses two chairs, tables, a wall cabinet, a bookshelf, a screen/divider, and lighting— simple objects meant to convey feelings of pure emotion, warmth, orderliness, and structure. flooring woop rugs When design has a conscience, it’s all the more beautiful. Spanish talent Juan Vidal’s Zebrapaint and Leopaint rugs were inspired by animal rights activism, specifically PETA’s request for fashion designers to eschew fur, and the actions of protesters who throw paint at nonobliging ads, runway models, and the like. The dynamic patterns superimpose black-and-white animal prints with “paint” stains realized in bright colors, telegraphing a ’70s Pop Art feel. The zebra print comes splashed with red and pink, the leopard with blue and green. Rugs are produced with 100 percent renewable energy in wool for sustainability. wooprugs.com/en

clé tile For a brand that has long honored craft in an emboldened way, the charming Granny Squares feels right at home. The brainchild of founder Deborah Osburn, it’s the first offering of the new Tile Drops series: limited-edition releases that will debut when they’re perfected, rather than on a seasonal schedule. The eponymous crocheted patches, here realized in Clé’s signature handcrafted cement, are having a moment. The palette is a bold yet lighthearted mix of black and white accented with teal and terra-cotta, while the product itself is durable enough to serve commercial spaces and high-traffic home areas alike. Measuring 8 inches, the modules are available with a white or black ground. cletile.com DEBORAH OSBURN

The series was conceived in collaboration with Mohawk's director of design Jeanette Himes and Living Product Challenge founder Jason McLennan of McLennan Design, the Bainbridge Island, Washington, multidisciplinary practice known for its groundbreaking regenerative solutions—including the line’s awardwinning predecessor, Lichen. The five patterns mimic how their namesake plantlike forms grow atop bark and rock formations in multihued, multitextured, meandering clusters—an analog indeed for communal spaces. Offered in numerous colorways, the nylon tiles feature Mohawk’s new EcoFlex One cushion backing of recycled PET, reducing the product’s embodied carbon by 50 percent, and are Living Product certified and NSF 140 Platinum. hay Ethan Cook is an artist who weaves his own canvases, working colored cotton on a floor loom in his Brooklyn, New York, studio until it becomes fabric. He then cuts the handwoven textile into blocks that he pieces together into compositions: minimalist abstract “paintings” as taut and precise as, say, any Ellsworth Kelly or other modern-art master. For Danish brand Hay, Cook transplants his ideas exploring the flatness and physicality of canvases to rugs fabricated in a blend of New Zealand wool and organic cotton. “I’ve never made anything with utility before,” Cook notes of the rugs, dubbed Flat Works, which come in multiple colors and sizes, including runners. hay.com

His mind was wandering during a workout when the shape of some nearby free weights inspired Barbell, a lamp that is both elegant and industrial. DOMA

LAURA AVIVA, ALLYSON THREATT-PETERS

l’aviva home Saddle Lamps, a new lighting series conceived by brand founder/creative director Laura Aviva and design director Allyson Threatt-Peters, was sparked by the equestrian heritage of Colombia’s coffee-growing region—evident in the stitched, braided, embroidered, and hand-tooled detailing. The cleanlined petal-like forms are made in collaboration with Bogotá-based master craftsman Edgar Beltrán Jaramillo, whose 15-step fabrication process draws on techniques used to make horse saddles, whereby sheets of leather are laid over wood molds and shaped. There are three styles: Doma, a traditional pendant; Capa, a bowlshape up-light pendant; and Noma, which can be deployed as a sconce or semi-flush-mount. The curvaceous shades and jewel-tone colorways have a second Colombian inspiration: the work of artist Fernando Botero. Made of natural-grain leather, the pieces feature brushed-brass hardware and come outfitted with a dimmable LED bulb. lavivahome.com

zucchetti Talk about clean-cut. The shape and proportions of this 21st-century interpretation of twin hot-and-cold taps are contemporary and minimal: a triumph of pure geometry. But they have a certain cheeky personality and nostalgia, too, being a play on classic cross handles. In matte-black, chrome, brushed-nickel, brushedgold, or embossed finish, the launch marks an expansion of the manufacturer’s popular Gill collection, part of the Zucchetti Lab line. axor Last year, the Axor One collection of sink, shower, and tub fittings launched in standard chrome and matte-black finishes. So far, so classic. This year, the series gets a little more pizazz courtesy of British design studio Barber Osgerby. The six new hues have an easyclean gloss finish that reads like a layer of water over the surface, reflecting the surrounding interior. The inspiration? Colors often increase in intensity when seen through liquid, Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby observed. They channeled that idea into Aquamarine, a mutable blue-green; red-orange JAY OSGERBY, EDWARD BARBER Coral; Ice, a blue resembling sea ice; Stone, a deep neutral; cool gray-pink Shell; and Sand, the beige hue of a shoreline wet from the tide. “Each color reflects the way in which bathrooms are increasingly becoming places that are less about utility and more about original, impactful design,” the duo says. (Nota bene: The colors are only available for private-use projects, not larger public spaces such as hotels.) axor-design.com

JAMIE BECKWITH

jamie beckwith collection The Nashville-based surface designer known for boldly geometric wood floor tiles and wall claddings debuts her inaugural series of locally produced tiles formed and glazed by hand. The Studio JBC Artisan Tile collection encompasses five lively relief-textured motifs based on Beckwith’s own art and drawings. Among them are Cosentino and Counterpoint, both 3-by-9-inch wall tiles; Gesso, a 6-inch square; and Palette, measuring 2 ½ by 3 ½ inches. All are crafted of Tennessee ceramic clay, which the studio reclaims and recycles in production. For added panache, you can opt to grout the tile recesses as well as the gaps between the installed modules. In six colors, all available in matte or glossy finishes. PALETTE

tomma bloom For the surface design studio’s second collection, Sonia and René, creative director Tom Lerental put a contemporary spin on Art Deco aesthetics. Nine cotton upholstery designs—also available as wallcoverings—and two polymer-modified gypsum tiles pay homage to abstract artist Sonia Delaunay and jeweler René Lalique. “I wanted to bring their creative essence to an interior experience,” says Lerental, who founded the Boston studio in 2019. She reduced Delaunay’s bold geometry and Lalique’s delicate hairpins into punchy fabrics Rhythm Two and Rhythm Four and 3D wall tiles (suitable for indoor or outdoor use) dubbed Rhythm One and Rhythm Two. The colorful, graphic patterns reflect Lerental’s desire to reimagine textile design, using it to create tactile and playful spaces. Everything is made to order in the U.S., with custom colors available. tommabloom.com

These include three recent additions: Jawbreaker, a rosy mauve; inky black-purple McQueen; and Stromboli Chess Club, a cornflower blue inspired by afternoons in Italy. kohler Factory refuse is the primary medium for the designers, ceramicists, and engineers at Kohler WasteLAB. In an effort to divert trash from landfills, they repurpose dry clay, enamel powder, foundry dust, and other cast-offs into tiles. For Abstra, its second tile collection, WasteLAB took the process a step further, pioneering a method of recycling wastewater from the maker’s Wisconsin factory. Pottery sludge and glaze are dewatered and turned into a usable base material forming 99.5 percent of the tile body. The resulting tiles—available in four sizes—come in two designs: patterned Abstra Feature and solid Abstra Standard. Both have fluid, undulating surface details and come in matte and brushed finishes in a muted, organic palette. Through Ann Sacks. annsacks.com

turf Since 2016, the Chicago-based maker has turned acoustic solutions into design statements. Its undulating ceiling baffles, jazzy ceiling grids, and 3D wall tiles of PET felt dampen noise and turn heads. Acquired by Armstrong in 2020, Turf has lately shifted its attention to color, introducing a palette of 32 hues (including 23 new ones) that expands the possibilities for projects. The result of over two years of research, Turf Hues explores the interplay of color and sound in fostering well-being. Color expert and frequent collaborator Carolyn Ames Noble helped identify versatile shades that appeal to a range of populations, including overlooked communities, and create a sense of healing—from earthy neutrals to saturated blues. Exclusive to Turf and available on most of its products, the new colors aren’t simply trendy but are also rooted in science. turf.design

ceramiche refin The porcelain tile specialist studied Italian frescoes from Pompeii to artist Giotto’s starry blue Scrovegni Chapel to create its latest collection, Affrescati. The maker analyzed traditional colors and techniques and applied them to rectified-porcelain tiles, reinterpreting the ancient craft for contemporary interiors. The collection comes in five colors of field tile based on pigments used in classical decoration—white Calce, gray Ombra, beige Ocra, brown Terra, and blue Lapis—and an understated blue-and-gold star decor, Giotto. The tile surfaces appear slightly aged and faded, as pigments look when absorbed into fresh plaster; layers of color, trowel marks, small hollows, and efflorescence add depth and texture. Available in four sizes, the ⅓-inch-thick tiles can be installed on floors or walls, bringing a sense of history to any room. refin-ceramic-tiles.com

LIZ COLLINS X SUNBRELLA X TUUCI FOR DUMBO. PHOTO BY VINCENT DILIO

liz collins studio The DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York, has long functioned as a creative hub, courtesy of the myriad designers and artists who’ve repurposed its warehouse structures as studios—and, occasionally, its parks, cobblestone plazas, and building facades as a canvas for public artworks. The latest addition to this de facto open-air gallery launches just in time for summer at the Pearl Triangle, near the Manhattan Bridge: a series of 15 shade umbrellas conceived by artist Liz Collins, known for her immersive textile-based installations. To realize the project, commissioned by the DUMBO Improvement District, Collins—who relocated her atelier to the nabe in 2020—collaborated with Sunbrella to conceive a limited-run fabric she then applied to Tuuci Ocean Master Classic umbrellas. A unique loom setup was utilized to create the jacquard-woven fabric, “a bold mash-up of saturated and pastel colors,” Collins describes. “I wanted something that felt alive and vibrant to reflect how energetic DUMBO is: the waterways, the bridges, the constant movement and transformation.” Intrigued? You’re in luck: Collins can coordinate a custom order for your own project. lizcollins.com

hay The Palissade park bench is an addition to Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec’s same-named line of outdoor tables, benches, and chairs. The design transforms the simplest of elements— weatherproof steel tubes and slats—into a nearly limitless modular system. The magic begins with an arc that can easily adjoin to others, forming semi-circles, circles, or undulating waves. A powder-coat palette of olive, anthracite, and sky-gray lends versatility, so benches (with optional cushions) can easily blend into both urban and natural settings. The basic unit is 86 inches wide, 35 deep, and 18 high. us.hay.com

“The majority of my designs are inspired by my travels and the outdoors, but until now our prints weren’t available as a performance fabric”

DYNASTY, DOMENICA

SHANAN CAMPANARO

DYNASTY

Conceived by studio founder Shanan Campanaro to satisfy customer demand, these evocative outdoor-ready performance fabrics are a first for her New York–based brand, which prides itself on mixing fine art with topnotch craftsmanship. The patterns themselves reinvent stripes, toiles, botanicals, and batiks as serene, atmospheric watercolor motifs in shades of indigo, green, gray, and black. Designs such as Domenica, Dynasty, Bali Stripe, and Perfect Palm conjure exotic locales. Each is digitally printed in Italy on 100 percent polyester fabric treated to a water- and stain-resistant Teflon finish. They’re ideal for outdoor settings but also for high-traffic indoor environments—any place that could use a hearty dose of style mixed with practicality. See you poolside! eskayel.com
