With its large surface area, deep profile, soft cushioning, and angled armrests—all clad in ultra-comfy Maharam wide-wale corduroy velvet—the Néad lounge is designed to engulf the user like a gentle hug. (Its name is Irish for “nestle.”) The swanky seat was inspired by the decade of the company’s founding—the 1970s—specifically the forms, materials, and conversation pits that defined the era. sancal Born in 1973 as a small upholstery workshop based at a Spanish almond orchard, the company grew up to become a benchmark of international contemporary design. This year, Sancal celebrates its big 5-0 by introducing a commemorative fabric, Fiesta, developed with Dutch brand Byborre. The knitted mélange-effect textile, sustainably produced in an orange colorway meant to express enthusiasm, is covered in a collage of retro graphics that incorporates the “smiley face” of Sancal’s logo. It looks especially fetching on the new iteration of Studiopepe’s Link sofa, with removable covers (one per link); Sylvain Willenz’s Totem stool and molded-plywood Body chair, a version of which comes upholstered top to toe; and Luca Nichetto’s modular seating system, Next Stop. Also new for the company—and equally graphic—is Bold, an irregular island of a cocktail table, in finishes including an exuberant high-contrast ash and glossy lacquer. sancal.com

“Nawabari’s informality is characteristic of BIG’s disruptive approach”

boconcept Taking its cue from the Japanese art of binding objects with rope, the Nawabari collection was designed with shared spaces in mind. The modular seating group is the byproduct of a new collaboration with global architecture office BIG–Bjarke Ingels Group. The forms indeed look as if cinched around their midsections, creating both a pleasing plumpness and a sense of formal rigor and rhythm. “Sculptural organic shapes are the core of this furniture family,” firm partner Jakob Lange explains. The series encompasses two sofas, an armchair, two coffee tables, and two poufs—all meant to be combined and moved around to help bring people together. Nawabari is available in six colors of Greenguard-certified wool-effect fabric and the full range of BoConcept upholstery offerings. boconcept.com

NAWABARI

Solid-wood furniture conveys a certain heft—telegraphing a quality (if we’re being anthropomorphic about it) that the pieces are rather sure of themselves. This Istanbul-based interdisciplinary studio led by Yinka Ilori teases out that confidence with Oblong, a 10-piece collection that comprises coffee, dining, and side tables, a stool, and a console. To compose the chunky round-cornered stools, which are at once sculptural and functional, the designer, who has a fashion background, used burnt oak and maple burl, the latter with a patterned finish that speaks to the beauty of the material. Pieces are handmade in Istanbul by masters of the craft. sanayi313.com FALL MARKET.23 INTERIORDESIGN.NET

pierre yovanovitch

The interior designer recently cut the ribbon on his first-ever showroom, in Paris’s Marais district. Yovanovitch designed the 2,690-square-foot gallery as a homelike environment in which his made-to-order furniture pieces mingle easily with vintage lighting and contemporary artwork. To mark the opening, the French designer tapped artist Claire Tabouret, a longtime friend, to create a limited-edition series of his iconic Asymmetry chair— which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. “It is a reflection of our friendship and creative synergy,” Yovanovitch says of the collaboration. “The richness of Claire’s work and the theme of childhood bring transience, poetry, color, and movement to an otherwise geometric, almost rocklike form.” Tabouret hand-painted kids’ faces and other details on a series of the artisanmade chairs, the wool upholstery decorated with streaming satin kites. The new Paris space will be followed by the opening of the brand’s first U.S. location, in New York. pierreyovanovitch.com MINDY, QUINN, CANDY PEBBLE, HONEYMOON, ELOI

The eco-friendly, clay-coated wallpaper tells a story of “unhurried time, ease, and tranquility,” she says, evoking a dance between water and object. Slightly transparent, the handpainted pattern shows blurred, overlapping vases in two soft colorways: sea-green Acqua and Nectar, a sandy orange. The 27-inch-wide panels come in heights of 9 or 12 feet and are printed to order with water-based inks (allow a four- to six-week lead time). rosemary hallgarten Textile designer Rosemary Hallgarten was born in the U.K. and works out of her company’s Connecticut headquarters, but her two recent collections turn to sunnier Mediterranean climes. In Aegean, textural neutrals, cerulean shades, and indoor/ outdoor upholsteries conjure visions of the Greek coastline. The open weave of Fisher, a linen-blend drapery, references fishing nets, while the delicate Micro Bouclé, a luxurious blend of baby alpaca and merino wool, evokes breezy afternoons. Heading to Puglia, Italy, Aurora nods to that region’s opulent Baroque architecture and incorporates rich velvets and shimmering silks in a palette reminiscent of latesummer light. It includes the marbled Cachet, which uses contrasting colors on a cotton ground to create visual texture, and color extensions to plush fabrics like Antoinette and Gatsby. rosemaryhallgarten.com

Located in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, the company specializes in transforming volcanic rock into cut stones for art, architecture, and interiors projects. It builds on generations of Neapolitan craftsmanship while employing innovative techniques to highlight the stone’s unique characteristics. In September, it named Milan architects Francesco Meda and David Lopez Quincoces as creative directors, signaling a bold contemporary vision. The duo launched their first collection, Odissea, at Edit Napoli, filling the Santa Maria La Nova monastery with raw and glazed shards of lava stone. The Cover-Less finish leaves the surface bare; Covered-Up coats it with a range of enamel glazes, from thick colors to a mottled translucent sheen. Both can dress Odissea’s 2D and 3D tiles, which are suitable for wall cladding, flooring, or custom applications. ranierilavastone.com

“Babylon truly appeals to the imagination”

arte The ancient city of Babylon inspired the manufacturer’s latest line of textile wallcoverings. It draws on cuneiform script, the pictographic writing that Mesopotamians carved into clay tablets. Likewise, Babylon’s four patterns were initially carved into clay, creating three-dimensional molds that Arte’s team converted into metal stamps. Using heat stamping, they transfer the designs onto a textile surface with a thin layer of foam and nonwoven backing. The resulting acoustical wall tiles, each in four colorways, resemble plasterwork: Terracotta recalls decorative earthenware, Medjoul depicts date palms, and Adobe mixes squares and triangles in an irregular composition. arte-international.com DECO

astek Tom Lerental, founder of the Boston-based studio Tomma Bloom, brings a bold, joyous spirit to everything she designs, whether it’s upholstery, rugs, or tiles. Now her playful style takes on a new dimension with Uplifted, a nine-pattern collection for the wallcovering specialist. Haptic printing technology enables the maker to translate Lerental’s perky colors and shapes into 3D, layering ink on Type II vinyl for an embossed effect. This gives Quilt its tactile stripes and Spool its whimsical twist, and creates the raised geometric blooms of Ornament II. Printed to order, each design comes in two colorways, including five metallic options, with scrim or polyester nonwoven backing; color and substrate can be customized. Suitable for commercial environments, Uplifted will make any interior pop. astek.com 48

york contract Aviva Stanoff, the founder of her eponymous home décor studio, comes from generations of makers. As a child, the California-based textile designer spent summers in her ancestral Japan studying traditional arts at a Buddhist temple, and she later honed her craft designing fabrics for fashion houses. This background informs Stanoff’s artisanal aesthetic and luxurious pillows, throws, and wallpaper. Her latest collaboration with York Contract considers Buddhism’s tree of enlightenment, the Bodhi. Heart-shaped leaves, some with metallic veins, drift across seven neutral grounds, including moody Onyx and gray Inner Spirit. The delicate composition belies the wallcovering’s durability: Printed on a 20-ounce Type II vinyl surface with nonwoven backing, Bodhi has an antimicrobial finish and is suitable for commercial environments. “It celebrates the simple geometric forms of Neoclassical architecture and the joyous forms of classical motifs”

samuel & sons Scott Maddux and Jo leGleud, the cofounders of the interior design studio Maddux Creative, have a way with historic architecture. Based in London, they’re known for preserving period details while updating homes for modern inhabitants. Gloriette, their collaboration with the passementerie specialist, strikes a similar balance, marrying traditional embroidery techniques with contemporary design principles. The collection— which comprises six borders, one tiered fringe, and one cord—draws on Neoclassical architecture and Florentine pietra dura mosaic work. The former is evident in the embroidered linen borders Colonna, Archi, and Punto which depict columns and arcades; the latter inspires exuberantly colored cords and fringe. Ranging from 1.25 to 4 inches wide, the borders bring a playful, erudite touch to upholstery, wall coverings, and drapery. samuelandsons.com

DRUMMER

The year-old Polish furniture brand grew out of a hunt for a mirror. Founder Patrycja Bruz ́-Soniewicka, a former marketing director, had an image of one in mind but couldn’t find it anywhere. She started sketching, and Hogai (Pashto for “special girl”) was born. The curved, full-length mirror that Bruz ́-Soniewicka envisioned, dubbed Artist, is one of four bold looking glasses that comprise the company’s first collection. The hefty wall and standing mirrors—which weigh up to 165 pounds—take inspiration from Bauhaus functionalism, Memphis Group energy, and the vibrant palettes of Pedro Almodóvar films. The 6 ½-foot-tall Cellist is the most whimsical of the bunch, with a round glass at the top of its oblong powder-coated-steel frame. Available in 11 colors, it’s designed to be the joyful centerpiece of a room.

KAREN GILBERT, PAUL PAVLAK STACK OBJECT

“The new multicolor glass palettes take this series of sculptural glass towers into entirely new territory”

sklo Karen Gilbert and Paul Pavlak, the married design duo who operate studios in Healdsburg, California, and the Czech Republic, introduce two new multicolor schemes for their Stack Object collection. The sculptural towers of handblown glass shapes were previously available only in neutral hues: amber, clear, smoke. Now, a red-based colorway and a blue palette join the mix. Poised on steel stands, the stacks are available in three sizes (small, medium, and large), each featuring a unique composition. “Glass is one of the best ways to introduce color into interiors, and these multihued palettes offer new opportunities to anchor or coordinate schemes,” the designers say. We love the totemic, jewelrylike pizzazz they bring to any space. sklo.com

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DAVIS FURNITURE

BRINGING HOME TO THE OFFICE BY DANINE ALATI

Blurring the lines between residential and commercial, jehs+laub responds to the evolving office landscape with their designs of the Cape Lounge and Capas Tables for Davis Furniture. Over the past three years, employees have been seeking a homier vibe at work than ever before. As such, furniture designs have had to adapt along with the evolving office landscape. That’s why collections like the Cape Lounge and Capas Tables—the latest collaborations between German design studio jehs+laub and U.S. manufacturer Davis Furniture—work so well in today’s commercial environments. Cape and Capas blur the lines between contract and residential to outfit a corporate lounge or hospitality space in such a way that it expresses a coziness where work and relaxation can commingle seamlessly.

2 3

“Our lifestyle and work style are evolving towards a more relaxed and informal atmosphere,” explains Rob Easton, Davis VP design and development. “And Cape and Capas offer a remarkable blend of comfort and adaptability.” Designers Markus Jehs and Jürgen Laub masterfully meld form and function in these two collections. With the Capas Tables they broke down a solid volume and eliminated parts that were unnecessary, “like a sculptor,” they say. And with Cape Lounge, its welcoming arms curve out and seem to say, “Come and sit with me.” Not only do Capas and Cape exude a refined, residential feel, but their robust construction also makes them well-suited for high traffic commercial environments, “effectively redefining lounging experiences in our ever-changing global landscape,” Easton adds. 1 Cape Lounge’s Arm Design Offers a Warm and Welcoming Embrace 2 A Davis Craftsman Welds a Solid-Aluminum Capas Table in High Point, NC 3 Capas Tables’ Three Sizes Gracefully Nested Together

ODE TO BRUTALISM RAKU

PORTRAIT: SHEENA KIM AT UNIQUE LAPIN PHOTOGRAPHY

Architect and interior designer Crina Arghirescu Rogard has long worked with craftsmen and artists to create custom furniture for clients’ homes. This fall, she brings pieces to market for the first time. Among her stable of trusted collaborators is Liz Hopkins, an artist and furniture designer based in upstate New York. Together, the pair conceived the sculptural Nuage desk and Ode to Brutalism book towers. The latter, resembling cinder blocks, are made of wood offcuts mixed with plaster, while the petite desk has a visible plywood-and-fiberglass structure; both are finished with polished resin. French ceramicist Fabienne L’Hostis made the Raku coffee table, whose ceramic top sits on a hammered blackened-brass base, while French cabinetmaker Maison Chabot crafted the slim Studette, a steel and lacquered-wood desk and wardrobe. All come in custom colors. Through Galerista. studiogalerista.com INTERIORDESIGN.NET

solidnature Architects and designers around the world turn to the Dutch stone purveyor to realize custom projects. OMA requested a pink-onyx-clad elevator for Fondazione Prada in Milan; Sabine Marcelis created travertineand-glass chairs. Yet as business has grown, so has its inventory of offcuts. The company asked Budde, a design studio in Cologne, Germany, to explore their potential. Founders Johannes Budde and Meike Papenfuss conceived Five x Seven: five tables (a console plus coffee and side tables) made from seven types of stone. For each piece, they combined slabs of marble, onyx, granite, and travertine, then carved a slim arch into all four sides. Layered together like sedimentary rock, the colorful stones form muted stripes of cream, pink, green, and gray, and look different from every angle. It’s a limited edition, but custom pieces are also available. Through Rossana Orlandi Gallery. solidnature.com; rossanaorlandi.com

Sometimes the interior scheme merits treating the floor plane as a neutral backdrop; other times, it cries out for the underfoot zone to take center stage. In the latter instance, Shapes by the Swedish flooring company may be just the ticket. Woven of recycled vinyl, the geometric tiles can be combined, Tetris-like, in endless ways to create bold, eye-catching floor mats. There are three sizes of triangles, rectangles both short and long, and a hexagon. Additional options push the envelope even further: an asymmetrical shape, a star, and more. All modules make use of the weft and warp construction to reflect light for added visual interest. bolon.com

SECRET GARDEN ROSE REALM

“Secret Gardens is not just a rug collection, but also a visual diary of my most intimate journeys through uncharted and wondrous mental landscapes”

sergio mannino studio The Brooklyn-based designer trumpets a sort of next-gen Italian radical aesthetic via his colorful and playful interiors and wink-wink product designs. Secret Gardens is a case in point, with its riotous hues and cartoonishly cool motifs. The production process emphasizes the hand: Mannino sketched out the patterns on paper before digitizing them with the help of Procreate, and the carpets are also woven entirely a mano. Outlined leaves combine with rows of bricks in Secret Garden; leaves reappear with planks of wood in Rose Realm; and wood combines with a stylized waterway in Sapphire Streams. The rugs, made of wool that’s been colored with organic dyes, are produced in a 4-by-6-foot format but can also be customized in different sizes and colors. sergiomannino.com 102

thatcher Based in Portland, Oregon, Avery Thatcher’s design studio is known for bold and beautifully crafted wallcoverings and tiles. She describes her work as reveling in the juxtaposition of elegance and chaos. That sums up the process for Leeway—as well as the result. The cement tiles are made by a team of artisans in Mexico working from the designer’s sketches, but with “leeway” to improvise as they pour colors directly onto the cement base. “I was pleasantly surprised that the finished tiles are more beautiful than my drawings,” Thatcher notes. The 8-inch-square modules, made with natural pigments and marble powder, come in two colorways: warm mélange and cool mélange. Both suit residential and commercial spaces alike, indoors and out. thatcherstudio.com

erik lindström The rug company’s recently unveiled New York showroom is the kind of place that’s fun to get lost in. Designed by interiors maven Anna Beeber, the 4,000-square-foot Flatiron space displays floor coverings in a series of 1970s-inflected environments—residentially styled vignettes that thematically combine eras and locales. Visitors are greeted at a vintage Paul Evans desk illuminated by salvaged Paris streetlamps and anchored by Anesi, a labyrinthine charcoal-toned wool stunner; in another setting, the handtufted Arcade rug forms a stage for a pair of De Sede sofas, facing off beside Karl Springer poufs. In-stock designs currently on view include Conversation, a playful composition of grayscale shapes set against a neutral background. Tucked into the back of the showroom is a sample library, with wares displayed in custom walnut millwork. It’s a rug gallery, for sure, but it’s also meant to become a salon for intimate gatherings—with design at the forefront. eriklindstrom.com

“Our rugs feel like an extension of a story we’d already started to write” ROBERT WRIGHT, RICHARD CHRISTIANSEN, TIBERIO LOBO-NAVIA HERA

beni rugs The rug maker’s latest collection was inspired by a home in the Los Angeles hills that was once an enclave for psychedelic experimentation and sun worship. The Flamingo Estate series is a collaboration between Beni’s cofounders, Robert Wright and Tiberio Lobo-Navia, and estate owner Richard Christiansen, who runs a rarified home-goods brand of the same name. The 13 floor-covering designs derive from decorative elements found throughout the property, which was built in the 1940s and more recently glamified by Studio KO. Motifs riff on brickwork, garden flora, and even leopard-spot upholstery. Cactus Pool channels a lapis-lined water feature in the garden; Breakfast Table interprets a stripedwood dining hub; Bathhouse Reflection evokes light cast from blue stained-glass windows; and Pavilion Tiles is a nod to the graphic kitchen counter. The designs, available in two or three colorways each, are handcrafted of wool in Morocco and can be specified in custom sizes. benirugs.com 112

kasthall This year would have marked the 100th birthday of designer and textile artist Ingrid Dessau, who worked at Kasthall for more than two decades. (She passed away in 2000, at age 77.) In her honor, the Swedish rug manufacturer dove into its archives to unearth a 1959 sketch of a rigorously linear design that wasn’t realized during her lifetime. With its distinctive delicacy and subtly colorful combinations, Karusell embodies Dessau’s eye for fine details. The wool flatweave, available for only a limited time, comes in both a stately blue and a marigold yellow. Both complement midcentury furnishings especially well. kasthall.com

Both had also pursued art during their undergrad days, and the designs they now create at their Brooklyn-based studio demonstrate a deft interweaving of those two disciplines. Take Tripp Stack. Measuring 87 inches high and about 19 across, the hand-produced pinwheel-like LED fixture is downright monumental—as much an architectural element or sculpture as a floor lamp. “Prototyping is a fun and collaborative process. We utilize 3D printers to create the proposed concept at different scales to assess the viability and preferred size”

boyd The Lily series of LED pendant fixtures, by Toronto-based product designer Jake Oliveira, sprang from the eponymous white flowers. Like its floral namesake, the fixture has a natural sense of balance and proportion. Handblown opal glass domes strung on carefully composed strings cascade in a rhythmic pattern, bringing a feel of the outside world in. The design’s elemental silhouette belies its complexity: Oliveira employed extensive prototyping to determine the right scale, then designed internal components to ensure the glass forms would illuminate as intended without breaking up the line of the cord. Available as a single-, five-, or nine-strand pendant measuring 72 to 108 inches long, Lily was a finalist for the NYCxDesign Awards. boydlighting.com

EITIE

“A luminous line gets expressed in various configurations thanks to a unique set of circular connectors”

cassina Proof that the simplest forms can be the most striking: Eitie, inspired by a wallmounted lighting installation Tobia Scarpa recently designed for Ca’ Scarpa in Treviso, Italy, a centuries-old church he restored for use by the Benetton Foundation Research Centre. Cassina leveraged that original design as a starting point to produce a full series that includes the original wall version as well as a pendant light and table and floor lamps. (Eitie is part of the brand’s first-ever lighting collection.) Employing hidden technology, the joints on the table and floor lamps can be opened 30 degrees to create different light effects. Each luminous aluminum element can be rotated 360 degrees, allowing users to adjust the glow’s position and brightness. MIRANDA WAGNER, JOHN SORENSEN-JOLINK

“With fixtures made of locally cast bronze and cast iron, Loon is an exploration of what it is to live close to nature in a community where craft is still honored”

The queer-owned New York company recently relocated from Brooklyn to a 3,000-square-foot studio in the Catskills— a move that allows for future expansion—and Loon marks the first series designed and built entirely in-house, from conception to production (the latter under the aegis of fabrication head Miranda Wagner). Owl wings, leaves, and dried seeds inspired company founder John Sorensen-Jolink’s early sketches. Those studies and drawings evolved into elemental sconces, pendants, and chandeliers produced by a local metal forge, marking a new place-driven aesthetic for the brand. The collection comprises eight fixtures divided into two product families: Foundry and Ridge. The former employs the traditional sand-casting technique and evokes trumpet flowers; the latter is characterized by curved, leaflike forms that call to mind a bird’s outstretched wings. Designs are available in a wide range of metals and patinas, including verdigris brass and aged manganese bronze. coilanddrift.com 130

CHANT 4X4, CRYSTAL TUBE

There’s no place like home—especially when you can watch it grow. Coinciding with the London Design Festival earlier this year, the designer unveiled his expanded Shoreditch showroom, originally opened in 2010. A former electroplating factory, it’s a storied place that forms the perfect backdrop for his furniture and fixtures, known for boundary-pushing artistic and architectural aspects—and often taking inspiration from Brutalist architecture and/or places of worship. The spatial reconfiguration allows for the display of a wider selection of Broom’s iconic products—including new introductions, such as his columnar Altar wall lights and glass-cube Chant sconce—in smartly decorated spaces. (Vintage artwork from his private collection is displayed to make it a unique and personal experience for visitors.) Even the facade has gotten a facelift, now in black with brushed-metal accents— plus Broom’s Little Lens Flair lights above the doors. leebroom.com

Talk about something greater than the sum of its parts! Designer Guglielmo Poletti’s To-Tie lamp is built from three simple components: a fabric-covered electrical cable, an aluminum light bar, and a borosilicate-glass cylinder. The minimalist fixture, available in three sizes, is held together only by the tension of the cord—without glue, screws, or welding. The concept stems from Poletti’s longtime research on the theme of structural tension, which here translates into a graceful fixtures that casts a broad glow. The anodized- or matteblack-aluminum housing doubles as a carrying handle, and the bulb itself will last approximately 50,000 hours. flos.com

mudd concrete Based in Ontario, Canada, the company was cofounded by husband-wife duo Anton and Esther Vanee, who leveraged their vast experience in highperformance concrete and brought together a close-knit team of designers and artisans to conceive minimalist products. Taking cues from wheelthrown pottery, the Bōl collection transforms the material—known for its strength and industrial nature—into gentle, curved forms with a soft surface texture. The washbasin range encompasses five shapes, starting with the most basic, an idealized bowl form, plus variations with lower sides and/or oblong profiles. The production process recalls that of pottery: Basins are cast from high-performance concrete, then hand-brushed with a cementitious blend, giving each a unique surface and texture. The palette’s nine hues are contemporary takes on earth tones. muddconcrete.com

concrete collaborative

“Salt is a fusion of nature and design, an artistic representation of the colors that surround me and influence my work” PORTRAIT: COURTESY OF ENY LEE PARKER

Lighting and furniture designer Eny Lee Parker’s primary medium is clay, so it makes perfect sense that she’d be drawn to a collaboration with the noted surface maker on a collection of perfectly imperfect handmade tiles. A fresh take on the textured-edge zellige, Salt’s irregular surfaces and tile-to-tile color variation result from a mix of cement, sand, aggregate, pigment, and water. There are five hues, all drawn from Parker’s life: Milk and Cocoa represent the clay tones in her work, Pine and Kiwi recall her Connecticut farm, and Denim captures the depth of the night sky she loves. The modules’ small size enables them to be used in myriad and creative ways—including decorating furniture in a mosaic style. Available in 4-by-4or 2-by-8-inch formats, both ⅝-inch thick. concrete-collaborative.com

salvatori The Italian company specializing in natural stone has a lot going on, including a recently launched New York flagship by Interior Design Hall of Famers George Yabu and Glenn Pushelberg. Salvatori’s full range of luxury materials and home décor is showcased in curated vignettes throughout the 6,400-squarefoot bilevel SoHo space, replete with original cast-iron columns and brick walls. A shoppable boutique greets guests in front, while the lower level is designed as an apartment complete with fully operational marble kitchen. Flexibility defines the interior scheme: “Rather than creating a permanent floor plan, we designed a custom wall panel system that allows the showroom to transform from an open-concept space to a series of rooms and vignettes,” Pushelberg explains. The firm’s Punto and Anima bathroom collections are prominently on view, as is the new Wood collection, which harkens back to Salvatori’s early roots in the material. Usable as boiserie, wainscoting, and more, the timber panels are available in iconic textures Bamboo, Plissé, Spaghetti, and Tratti. salvatoriofficial.com 146

“This collection of bespoke ceramics has the irresistible allure of pastries”

DONUT ECLAIR

BODIN HON, DILARA KAN HON, ORHAN GORBON

gorbon A taste for sweets crosses cultures and geographic boundaries, a sort of universal language of desire and delight. So, it’s only appropriate that delectable pastries were the inspiration for Patisserie, a collection conceived by Bodin Hon and Dilara Kan Hon of Studio Yellowdot. The design duo, based in Hong Kong and Turkey, paid a visit to tile manufacturer Orhan Gorbon’s Istanbul workshop, where they were mesmerized by the production process…and reminded of a pastry kitchen. The playful shapes and pastel hues of donuts, eclairs, and biscuits became innovative dry-pressed ceramic tiles that bring sugary energy to actual kitchens worldwide. The threedimensional tiles are handmade from pigmented and glazed clay—but look good enough to eat.

SKINCLAY

matteobrioni The Italian brand’s new clay-and-pigment paint, SkinClay, is the star of a modular dollhouse project by architect and brand art director Marialaura Rossiello Irvine that pays homage to female creative pioneers. Each of the 14 rooms of “Paints According to Irvine” features a different dimensional paint color inspired by the likes of Cini Boeri, Charlotte Perriand, Ray Eames, Gae Aulenti, Clara Porset, Lina Bo Bardi, and Anni Albers. A subtle Sand Pink living room is dedicated to Georgia O’Keeffe, for instance, while the mid-intensity Cayenne Red kitchen honors Eileen Gray. “When playing with my dollhouse as a child, I’d picture in my mind the colors, the people living in the house, and their stories,” Irvine says. “When I enrolled at university, I encountered for the first time the great pioneers of modernity: Behrens, Le Corbusier, Gropius, Persico, Loos, Sant’Elia…all men. And the women?” This installation seeks to correct the record, while also showcasing the beautiful coloration and natural imperfections of SkinClay, which is delivered in a powdered state. matteobrioni.com

“Maya and I bonded over our shared love of art, design, herbalism, biophilia, and color theory”

architectural products After researching the conventional paint industry, Price Latimer and Maya Crowne realized there was much to be done to make the product better for people and the environment. So began Alkemis Paint, distinguished by its allnatural mineral foundation and artistquality crystalline pigment. Made without solvents, plasticizers, preservatives, biocides, synthetic pigments, or chemical colorants, the so-called “architectural wellness” paints—launched during NYCxDesign week at R & Company gallery alongside zeitgeisty furnishings— have a pleasant gritty-matte texture that result from the unique binder, made from clear quartz plus minerals from the Earth’s crust. “Think of it as crushed-up crystals and rocks to adorn your walls,” Latimer enthuses. Using clear quartz means the pigments are essentially embedded in glass, allowing the colors to shine through with unrivaled luminosity and light reflectivity (the synthetic binders of typical paints tend to cloud hues). But it’s also an exercise in holistic wellbeing. “Crystals and minerals have been used in therapeutic modalities since ancient times to attune energetic alignment and foster balance,” Crowne notes. To that end, the paints also incorporate goethite, believed to promote meditation; chromite, to ground emotions; and hematite, which absorbs negative energy.

“Kylíndo is born from an extrusion of cylinders”

Architect Antonio Sant’Elia, the author of the Italian Futurist manifesto, was a highly influential figure, both within the movement and over the course of 20th-century modernism, despite his too-short life—he died at age 28, in battle during World War I—and his limited portfolio. One of his only completed designs is the Villa Elisi in San Maurizio, Italy, near Lake Como, where this upstart manufacturer is based. Its new CuttingEdge collection suitably channels Sant’Elia’s spirit via avant-garde gestures. Designed by brand cofounders Francesco Manfredi and Tommaso Lorenzini, its key piece is Kylíndo, a low-slung tubular outdoor armchair topped with waterrepellent cylindrical bolster cushions. (There’s also an indoor counterpart.) Given its nautical details, such as the ropes inspired by sailors’ knots that secure the cushions to the metal frame, it’s easy to picture the handmade piece poolside or on the deck of a yacht. dalmoto.com

minotti Isole means “islands” in Italian, and it’s easy to see why Gordon Guillaumier chose it as the name for his playful 1950s-inspired lava stone coffee tables. Each irregular, organic-shape top is inset with a concentric circle of colored glass dust, creating an effect that evokes a land mass popping out of the ocean. Perching on polished pewter-finish stainless-steel legs, Isole comes in four earth-tone colorways (celadon, green, cappuccino, and rust) and four sizes, each standing at a slightly different height to allow a layered, nesting effect when arranged together. Isole shares a root with the word “isolate,” but ironically these pieces look best in a bunch. minotti.it

CANNOLÈ

outdoor

emuamericas The furniture brand’s cofounders, Anton Cristell and Emanuel Gargano, turned to sartorial influences in conjuring their new collection—namely, handmade ribbed knits, a sure sign of quality clothing. That influence speaks through Cannolè’s tubular-steel frame, with vertical lines that evoke the familiar textile pattern. The outdoor lounge collection encompasses 11 seating options, including a five-person sofa plus individual linear and corner pieces, all with plush padded cushions, plus small and large tables. Durability, key to any outdoor collection, is achieved by galvanizing the frame’s steel tubing inside and out; moreover, weatherproof upholstery provides comfort without sacrificing performance. With six frame-color options and fabric choices ranging from basic to premium, Cannolè’s customizability is nearly unlimited. emuamericas.com 182
