We love a good collab, and this one sees two U.S. contract titans Tiger Leather and Davis Furniture—joining forces. The Aurora leather collection boasts a whopping 60 custom hues and was developed as part of the holistic Davis Color Story, a massively expanded range of available powdercoats, wood veneers, laminates, and, yes, leathers. Made in Italy using the top three percent of graded hides, the supple, lightly embossed surface is finished with Iconic antimicrobial formula, making these leathers ideal for any contract or hospitality application imaginable. space 3-115

On your first day traipsing the Mart, head to the third floor to eyeball the brand-new Scandinavian Spaces showroom that encourages the Swedish concept of fika—essentially, the idea of coffee, cake, and conversation. Designed in collaboration with interior design firm Kuchar, it’s the place to source more info on RUT, formally innovative modular seating by Thomas Bernstrand and Stefan Borselius for Blå Station that delivers hominess to contract spaces via 29.5-inch units that can be arrayed any which way atop a chromed-steel H-beam base with solid-oak supports. So what are you waiting for?

Kirei Ink is a range of custom-printed recycled-PET acoustic panels that soften sound but say a lot visually. Sure, there’s a curated library of 48 prints across four collections, including biophilic and geometric motifs (such as the linear Trenches from the Geo series, shown) plus wood, concrete, linen, and marble dupes, but really, the possibilities are endless due to the ability of total customization. “Kirei Ink is as unique as designers and their clients are,” designer Michael DiTullo says. “It showcases the spectrum of possibilities for Kirei and our new on-demand digital printing.” At Carnegie Fabrics (which acquired Kirei last year). space 10-112

Plant Here is the too-cute name of Scandi company Mizetto’s architectural planters designed by ADDI studio. Any office gardener would be happy to get their hands (or gardening mitts!) on the vessels, with their generous depth, transparent inner pot for easy planting and replanting, and variety of heights, shapes, sizes, and colors. A must-see at every NeoCon is the keynote series featuring notable thought leaders. This year’s lineup is no di erent. Kicking things o on Monday at 10AM is journalist turned futurist Amy Webb, professor of strategic foresight at NYU, author, CEO, and forecasting advisor in demand by companies, admirals and generals, central banks, and intergovernmental organizations the world over. Her talk, “Designing a Way Forward,” promises to parse science and technology as it relates to the future—and is not to be missed.

Tuesday morning, Michael Murphy, founding principal of MASS Design Group, discusses the ethical nature of design decisions, investigating the social and political consequences of the built world and how environments shape behavior.

Finally, Wednesday at 10AM, award-winning architect and academic Michael Ford, known as the Hip-Hop architect, joins Wasalu Jaco, aka Lupe Fiasco, the Chicago-born, Grammy Award–winning rapper and currently a visiting professor at MIT. Together, they explore the rhythms, textures, and patterns of hip-hop as a source of design innovation in theory and professional practice.

Materiality takes center stage with this versatile 17-inch-high plywood stacking stool, its chamfered edges and quirky triangular cutout allowing portability and easy configuration. The byproduct of Allermuir’s first collaboration with Jeff Smith and Gemma Matthias, Ooty began as a series of scale models. The British designers then debated whether to use metal or plywood—ultimately opting for the latter, for its cozier and timeless character. With clear lacquer and color-wash finishes available, plus options for a matching seat pad upholstered in Kvadrat’s Melange Nap, this simple stool will elevate any contract space. space 1112

An exposed powder-coated steel frame and chic quarter-rounded top distinguish Nido, a suite of monochromatic occasional tables by Martin Brattrud’s director of product development. The designer also dreamed up Codigo: Conceived for extended sits, the bar- and counter-height stools boast a refined pull-stitch detail and robust solid ash or walnut legs. The stool’s name is Spanish for “code,”—a nod, Manuel explains, to its Morse code–inspired dash-like pull detail, “a unique element that adds an unexpected touch.” The tubular metal footrest is offered in a range of colors for extra pop. space 347

IIDA selects the recipients of its annual competitions winning lineup

Design is on a roll. According to the top 200 firms surveyed for our InteriorDesign Giants research, they made $5.5 billion in fees last year, surpassing the decade high of $5.4 billion in 2019. What’s also rising? The number of entrants to IIDA’s Annual Interior Design and Will Ching Design Competitions (the latter honoring the work of commercial firms with five or less employees). Winners in seven categories, selected from some 300 international submissions, were fêted last night at IIDA’s black-tie gala, held at the Ritz-Carlton, Chicago. Textile artisan Sina Pearson balances inspiration with a purposeful yet organic creative process, evident in her new collection. Dubbed Unexpected, the series’ Greenguard-certified fabrics come in three designs: Modern Plaid, whose overlaid grid pattern pairs surprising tones; Tweedy, a dense textural bouclé that contrasts neutrals, classic brights, and pastels; and the cotton-rayon Thick and Thin, conceived to be upholstered in a railroaded fashion. Performance luxury is taking center stage with this sumptuous collection, Drop 20, aka The Wild Bunch. The six offerings are at once resplendent and practical, designed for durability. Trouvaille’s geometrics add a multidimensional effect that hides stains, while Wildflower’s ornate, vintage-y motifs mimic fil coupé with a distinctive eyelash yarn that won’t shed fibers. Bitmap, printed at Designtex’s Surface Imaging facility in Portland, Maine, features subtle symmetry, an ideal backdrop for any workplace environment. There’s also Overtone, a two-tone linen-look well suited to panels, and the vibrant chenille Sidetrack.

Inspired by French auteur Albert Lamorisse, the brand’s latest addition embraces oldworld style and modern sustainability alike. Behold Lamorisse Wood, its pert frame made from FSC-certified ash and sharing the same seamless silhouette as the aluminum model introduced last year. Polyurethane-foam cushioning and a removable wraparound backrest secured by a leather strap complete the flexible, comfortable design.

THE INTERSECTION OF DESIGN + HIP HOP CULTURE

Introducing the Mike Ford + Shaw Contract rug collection that celebrates the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop. The collection draws from Hip Hop as design inspiration, expressing the textures, patterns, rhythms, and energy, optimism, and history of the five elements. Do you know German designer Hanne Willmann? She’s the first female talent to release a collection with the manufacturer, and the result is elegance at its most refined. Hanne analyzed the company’s portfolio to create designs that fit with its established aesthetic while adding a fresh sensibility. The result is Vida, a series of curvaceous tables grounded by powder-coated solid-steel bases and thin-profile tops. We especially love the occasional table, sculptural in the extreme with its cantilevered surface partly wrapped by a curved base. Also new is Capas: shapely aluminum nesting tables by Jehs+Laub, available in over 30 powder-coats as part of the comprehensive new Davis Color Story. Finally, Casen by Anderssen + Voll is a bold, monolithic seating collection that includes a sofa with a chunky armrest that swoops around the back in a single gesture.

Japanese designer Ichiro Iwasaki’s latest for the Italian furniture company comprises round-cornered seating components pairing with same-shaped mini tables that slot in seamlessly to provide structure and hard surface options. The modular elements of Ralik include an ottoman, a seat with backrest, and a bench—all available in one- and twositter configurations—that can be grouped together (or not!) as desired, ganged in small clusters or forming a larger and more complex composition. Loose lumbar cushions add extra comfort, while charging outlets speak to contemporary needs. The petite L-shape recycled-polypropylene legs are practical, ensuring easy access underneath for cleaning.

There are global nomads—and then there are office nomads, migrating from setting to setting throughout the day as different situations require. (That describes most of us!) Accordingly, spaces need to be flexible, able to adapt and be reconfigured as needed. Answering that demand is OmniRoom, a modular room-in-room system that requires no construction. The product is available in 100 predesigned room iterations—workstations, meeting areas, etc.—that can be placed separately or adjoined. (Customized spaces are also possible.) The Brooklyn-based brand’s latest hospitality-focused design, Lyric, merges nature and architecture in a fusion of forms. The design takes cues from the small-town coastal vernacular—think constellations of beach houses tucked into coves, or the sight lines from a domed church. The geometric pattern’s seven colorways include Archway, whose sunset-hued angles frame a pastelblue ellipse, summoning the view from a hillside vista, and Atrium, juxtaposing moody blues and greens with terra-cotta.

The Chicago company’s Plaid fits the bill. The crisscrossing acoustic ceiling system is offered in varying layouts, connections, profiles, finishes, and colors. Leave the T-grid open for a loosely industrial aesthetic or insert a continuous tile cap in textured patterns for a traditional coffered ceiling look. Patricia Urquiola’s latest designs are on full display in the maker’s 10th-floor showroom. Be sure to check out the Bao lounge, an ergonomic chair with midcentury vibes that can be used individually or joined together into curved forms. Cool features: Bao’s backrest adapts to the body’s contours to offer optimal support, while its natural-origin bio-based thermopolymer innards are not only recyclable but also compostable and biodegradable at the end of the lounge’s life cycle. The collection includes an organically shaped and textured occasional table made of the same material and topped in oak, lacquer, technical stone, or marble. Chic!

On Instagram he’s known as the “hip-hop architect” and it’s that passion for the musical form—currently celebrating its big 5-0—that infuses Michael Ford’s new carpet tile collection, in solution-dyed recyclable nylon fiber. The multihyphenate talent, whose social justice–minded firm, BrandNu Design, has offices in Detroit, Dallas, and Madison, Wisconsin, brings a conceptual, research-informed approach to his work, and this series is no exception. Dubbed Mike Ford x Shaw Contract, the five rhythmic, energetic patterns honor and interpret different facets of hip-hop culture, from the makeshift cardboard platforms that break-dancers of the 1970’s and ’80s laid on the ground to use as dance floors to the complexities of lyrical analysis. In DJ, vertical lines mimic the stacked records carried to parties; MC reflects the artistry of rap lyrics through mathematical analysis; and Graffiti channels the collective public art form and fluid lettering styles via a layered composition.

Supporting that trend is Optic, a collection of tables and storage pieces designed to facilitate the hybrid meeting experience. Asador Bastian [$$$]

Opened just three months ago in an 1883 townhouse, this heralded chophouse from chef Doug Psaltis has a Basque spin. He takes culinary inspiration from the asadors of San Sebastián, Spain, aging the beef on the hoof to develop a richer avor. The prime cut is the Txuleton: a thick-cut rib steak grilled on the bone over coal and sliced to share. Add crispy artichokes and a bone marrow–potato puree as sides, and don’t forget dessert from pastry chef Hsing Chen: rum cake or a burnt Basque cheesecake. Small bites and drinks are served in the ground- oor bar room (walk-ins welcome), while the moodily lit second-level dining room is for those with reservations. 214 W. Erie Street; 312-800-8935.

Atelier [$$$]

Seasons guide the cuisine at this American restaurant, helmed by rising executive chef and James Beard nalist Christian Hunter and situated in the space that formerly housed Elizabeth (and inheriting that eatery’s sta and kitchen). Hunter gets inspired by the latest o erings from the best Midwestern farms, nutritional anthropology, and sustainable production. “More than just an expression of oneself, food is an expression of an environment,” he explains. The tasting menu ($190 per person) changes frequently, with unusual items such as rutabaga pappardelle, cardamom sourdough, and yuzu posset. We call him one to watch. 4835 N. Bambola [$$]

Bonhomme Group’s Michelin-starred executive chef Marcos Campos explores spices once traded on the Silk Road at this restaurant inspired by cultural exchange between Asia and Europe. Istanbul as a historic gateway between East and West is a touchstone, but there’s also dishes from Italy, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Greece. Think sardine taramasalata in one corner and Szechuan cucumbers with whipped tofu and garlic chili crisp in another. For mains, try the suckling pig with reroasted Urfa-spiced apricot jam and an apple-fennel salad or go for whole branzino with scallion-mochi pancakes, sa ron fried rice, and mandarin sweet chili. Nonalcoholic drinks are a mainstay, with spirit-free cocktails as original as any other libation

on the menu (no boring diet cokes for sober diners here). The interior design is top notch, featuring ornate handblown chandeliers and a standout 40-foot dining table by Foster + Partners.

Coquette [$$]

Step inside and be transported to a pink-and-peach Parisian dream—a little New Wave, a little Bauhaus, a lot idiosyncratic. The 40-seat French restaurant and wine bar’s immersive surroundings (starring groovy retro tiles) is just the start. Interaction is part of the experience; for instance, guests are o en invited behind the bar for complimentary pours and to select albums from the Coquette record collection to play during the evening. The fare is traditional French—think steak au poivre, onion soup, and salad niçoise. Fun fact: It’s right by Bambola, also on our hot list, and from the same hospitality group, Bonhomme.

Indienne [$$$]

Situated in a 19th-century printing warehouse, chef Sujan Sarkar’s eatery is Indian ne dining at its very best. Try the six-course seasonal tasting menu for $120, each dish exquisitely plated, or select from à la carte options such as chicken malai tikka with leeks, amul cheese, and pistachio dukkah or jackfruit katsu with lemon sour cream and dum ki gravy. “While Indian cuisine is growing in popularity due to hardworking immigrant families,

it doesn’t yet have its footing in mainstream American ne dining,” Sarkar says. “Too o en, Indian food is viewed as a to-go or casual dining option, rather than something you would enjoy as a sophisticated dining experience.” Indienne seeks to change that. Of note: It’s open Mondays, a rarity in Chicago, and thus perfect for NeoCon-goers.

Lady May [$$]

Tucked behind the Wrigley Building in River North, this cocktail-forward eatery from Kentucky-born Big Brother alum Memphis Garrett is an ode to southern charm. The surroundings tell the love story of Lady May; expect oral details and a quaint, romantic air. Chef de cuisine Austin Blake’s menu features snacks like boiled peanut hummus with Cajun peanut oil and crudité or deviled eggs with caviar alongside dishes such as short rib helper, its fresh rigatoni paired with bone marrow and black tru e, and a pork chop with tallow sweet potato and collard greens. For cocktails try the sotol pineapple mojito, adorned with a brûléed wedge of the tropical fruit or, perhaps, the key lime margarita—and don’t skip the fried ice cream for dessert.

The Golden Girls Kitchen Chicago [$$]

Are you a fan of The Golden Girls? Then you’ll want to check out the new traveling pop-up restaurant in Wicker Park that’s inspired by the iconic sitcom. The ticketed dining experience includes your choice

of a Golden Main and a slice of cheesecake. (Add sides, desserts, beverages, and exclusive merch on arrival, as you like.) Dishes include the bacon lettuce potato sandwich (say it fast) with fries and Blanche’s Georgia-style cookies. But what you’re really here for is the campy set design straight out of the TV show: Snap a photo in Blanche’s boudoir, complete with shag carpet and palm-print bedspread, or pretend to chat with the ladies through the girls’ yellow kitchen phone.

Thomas & Dutch [$$]

This American restaurant in Evanston from Farmheads hospitality group dubs itself “a modern Midwest gathering place serving elevated comfort food.” It’s a half-hour drive (or train ride) from the Mart to the North Shore, but if you’re in the mood for getting out of the city center, Thomas & Dutch could suit the group. Farm-fresh classics include beef Wellington, grilled rack of lamb, and birthday cake or peach cobbler for dessert. Unique cocktails include the beetroot Manhattan made with rye, pickled beet, and mushroom plus a sloe gin zz that adds tart cherry and rhubarb to the mix. Of note: Tip is included in the bill to provide a consistent income for all members of the team.

"Shift: Music, Meaning, Context"

A roster of multidiscipinary artists from around the globe dissects one of the world’s oldest art forms—music—via mixed-media performances at the Museum of Contemporary Photography This free exhibit reveals music as a pliable tool, capable of harm, healing, politics, and play. Visitors can expect to be awed and educated by displays such as André Lützen’s Generation Boul Fale, a series of monochromatic, distorted photographs depicting French and Senegalese rappers that highlights the genre’s existence as a fringe art form in France, and Chicago-based photographer Cecil McDonald, Jr.’s portraits in bold, bright color that capture Black families listening to vinyl, engrossed in the everyday beauty of domestic life. 600 S. Bahamian-born textile phenom Gio Swaby’s human-scale portraits are embroidered and stitched in a freehand style and united by a common thread: the celebration of Blackness and womanhood. The artist begins with photo shoots invoking her subjects in moments of empowerment and poise, then renders their hairstyles, jewelry, and sartorial air in oral and geometric fabrics on canvas, creating regal silhouettes. On view at the Art Institute of Chicago, Swaby’s rst solo museum exhibition comprises seven series of portraits and self-portraits from 2017–21, such as her New Growth 2 triptych, as well as 15 new pieces. The exhibit title, a Bahamian compliment for radiant self-expression, “speaks to the tone of con dence and power I wanted to create with these works,” Swaby says. 111 S. Linklater: Mymothersside”

Duane Linklater’s Omaskêko Cree ancestry informs his multimedia work, which ranges om a concrete reproduction of a 9,000-year-old bu alo bone hide scraper to an open letter to MoMA commenting on its displaying of indigenous art. His new exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago references his family, childhood home, and favorite bands, lms, and clothing—all things that make up an authentic indigenous identity. There are sculptures, videos, and digital prints on linen om the past decade of Linklaterʼs practice, as well as new adaptations installations that he has continually revisited and revised. It builds what the artist calls “a zone of noninterference”—a space of sovereignty and self-determination through art. 220 E. Chicago Avenue; 312-280-2660.

Ordinary objects can take on new meaning when they pass through human hands, developing their own stories along the way. Itʼ s a theme in the sculptures of Gina Lee Robbins, an Indiana-based visual and teaching artist who has been working in clay for 30 years. She’s drawn to discarded objects, which she picks up anywhere om city alleys to woodland paths. Those are combined into works like the ones on display at Epiphany Center for the Arts as part of “Over ow,” a name that references both debris that spills out into the landscape and emotions that bubble up at unexpected times—both of them “elements of human experience we can’t quite contain.” 201 S.
