throwing a curve
Look what’s snaking through The Mart! The Bay System, Foster + Partners’s latest collaboration with Poltrona Frau, encompasses two modular seating ranges. Gate is an efficient, high-density solution for short sits, so is wellsuited to lobbies and boarding gates (hence the name), while Lounge can be used in airports, too, but the modules are built to offer different levels of comfort, enclosure, and privacy, making it a versatile option for any number of applications. Head to the third floor and take a load off! space 312
let’s make some noise!
No stranger to NeoCon, renowned textile designer Dorothy Cosonas returns to The Mart with her latest series, Quiet Riot, a seven-pattern upholstery and wallcovering collection for Wolf-Gordon. Five mills, each with a distinct skill set, were enlisted to produce the highperformance PVC-free series, which is graced with intricate interconnected linework that speaks to Cosonas’s far-reaching inspirations, from nature to fashion. space 10-161

HiP Award–winning studio BuzziSpace debuts a hospitality- and workplace-friendly acousticpendant fixture that’s both illuminating and noise-dampening. BuzziBurner is equipped with a dimmable LED disc that can be fitted with a milky diffuser or a prismatic filter that emits orange and red hues—perfect for groovy vibes. A range of upholstery choices makes the pendant a pragmatic addition to any chaotic high-traffic zone...like, dare we say, the NeoCon hallways. space 10-111

In partnership with:
SANDOW Design Group’s First NeoCon—in partnership with The Mart, Interior Design, and Metropolis welcomes 15 talented design professionals to experience the show for the very first time. This fully funded initiative offers a comprehensive itinerary led by industry notables and features editor-guided showroom tours and engaging roundtable discussions. Huge thanks to our sponsors for giving this select group the VIP treatment: Dauphin, Momentum, Narbutas, Nook, Scandinavian Spaces, Shaw Contract, Spec, and Turf!
Plush, plump, and pleasingly playful, Kenny Nguyen’s rounded and fully upholstered perch for Nienkämper drapes over an exposed wood beam that acts as a sturdy foot/base. Use Beam singly or spec the two- or three-person version, with or without the corresponding petite tables that can anchor rows or slip between the seats. The easygoing design’s low, compact footprint makes it ideal for lobbies and lounges. What’s not to like? space 365

What’s the buzz at DesignScene by SANDOW? NeoCon visitors (and roundtable attendees!) made their mark at Momentum’s installation at the Metropolis Sustainability Lab, sketching sel es and portraits along the digitally printed wallcovering, spanning the length of Interior Design’s 11th- oor space. Dubbed “Colorplay,” the installation features a kaleidoscopic array of pendants in funky oblong shapes from 3form’s Reclaim program, which ensures circular production. Meanwhile, 25 hues of Mohawk Group’s Bene t for a Cure program collection are featured, inspired by the Artli ing artist Yvette’s rhythmic music, in a cascading watercolor design. A garbage basket isn’t necessarily top of mind when it comes to aesthetic centerpieces, yet Giulia Pesce and Ruggero Bastita’s multihued series of touchless pedal bins begs to differ. The Turino, Italy–based duo explain they designed Pelican for Mizetto in response to the pandemic, “which has left us all reluctant to touch handles and surfaces in public spaces.” Characterized by sleek, geometric lines and soft curves, the modular bins form cloudlike or oblong shapes when arranged in a row or stacked back-to-back. In sophisticated colors like forest green, dusty blue, and copper brown, Pelican certainly turns trash into treasure. space 7-7094

jill malek finds her footing
The New York–based designer’s Ascend collection, a collab with Astek Wallcovering, is nothing less than majestic. Available in type II textured substrate for commercial use and cream grass-cloth for residential, Malek’s fluid forms are at once meditative and energetic, in five epic designs—mammoth yet harmonious backdrops for any setting. For Close Range, Malek employed a monochrome palette to balance the trippy mountainous pattern. “It creates a sense of being on edge, but in a soothing way,” Malek says. space 7-1065

Continuing his successful partnership with Davis Furniture, the German designer’s latest series is defined by agility. The Seba collection’s two pieces—a standard chair and a lounge—are ideal ancillary furnishings for high-traffic lobbies and cozy nooks alike. With a spacious seat, lithe upholstery details, and casters concealed beneath its concave base, Seba suits the flex professional—or anyone looking for a place to rest in style. “Whether it be an office or a hotel, the modern interior continues to evolve into something that’s less formal and more open to flexibility and casual occupancy,” Herkner notes. The patterns swirl and weave stories of ecological wonder, underscoring the value of wellness in the hospitality sector. space 377

IIDA celebrates its annual design competitions
The winners of IIDA’s 2023 Interior Design and Will Ching Design Competitions reflect the industry’s best—marrying big-picture vision with an eye for microscopic touches. “No detail or corner was left unstudied in these spaces,” says Kuchar owner and creative director Sarah Kuchar-Parkinson, reflecting the sentiment of fellow jury members Margaret McMahon, SVP and global director of Wimberly Interiors, and Leyden Lewis Design Studio’s eponymous founder and creative director. The honorees, including hometown project 800 Fulton Market by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, were celebrated on Sunday night at IIDA’s gala. Talk about a design triple threat!
The company’s NeoCon intros include of enticing classics reimagined for now. It starts with Charlotte Perriand’s 1938 Bureau Boomerang desk, named for its curved, nocorners shape. Originally created for French intellectual, writer, and editor Jean-Richard Bloch—someone who clearly spent a lot of time at his desk!—the piece is available in new finishes including oak-stained ash and American walnut. Next up, Cab Office, inspired by Mario Bellini’s iconic 1977 Cab chair, is a line of swiveling, reclining armchairs in vivid saddle-leather shades (Bulgarian red, anyone?). And finally, Le Corbusier’s 1957 LC16 Bureau desk, conceived for children’s rooms at an apartment building in France, is being reissued in a larger size more appropriate to today’s working needs and the contract market. Ready for a summer vacation? Interior designer Shelly Sparks, founder of Hyphen & Co. studio, launches a sunshine-infused, Aperol spritz–ready collection of wallpapers. “After years spent grounded during the pandemic, we wanted a visual reminder that travel is the essence of inspiration, creativity, fun, and imagination,” she says. The ambition, she continues, was to design a collection that could be incorporated into different types of spaces, and indeed, “all the patterns work beautifully in both residential and commercial contexts.” The 10 prints have a maritime theme with shades of Amalfi Coast glamour. Motifs include lemons, shells, nautical knots, cabana stripes, and mermaids and mermen. The Chasing Paper x Hyphen & Co. collection is available in three substrates: peel-andstick (a poly-woven fabric with a low-tack adhesive backing), traditional wallpaper, and faux grass-cloth commercial-grade type II vinyl.

The revolution will not be televised, but it will be on display at the contract fabric maker’s NeoCon space. The 10-shade selection of recycled-wool fabric is produced in Yorkshire, England, where Camira’s own waste yarn is sorted into colorways, shredded, stripped down to fiber forms, and then blended with virgin wool—a 19th-century technique that preserves original hues, thus eliminating the need for additional dye. Revolution’s palette has a homespun aesthetic, with flecks of color from the waste wool yarn adding visual intrigue and depth.

fresh pick!
Bambola [$$]
Bonhomme Group’s Michelin-starred executive chef Marcos Campos explores spices once traded on the Silk Road at this restaurant inspired by cultural exchange between Asia and Europe. Istanbul as a historic gateway between East and West is a touchstone, but there’s also dishes from Italy, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Greece. Think sardine taramasalata in one corner and Szechuan cucumbers with whipped tofu and garlic chili crisp in another. For mains, try the suckling pig with re-roasted Urfa-spiced apricot jam and an apple-fennel salad or go for whole branzino with scallion-mochi pancakes, sa ron fried rice, and mandarin sweet chili. Nonalcoholic drinks are a mainstay, with spirit-free cocktails as original as any other libation on the menu (no boring diet cokes for sober diners here). The interior design is top notch, featuring ornate handblown chandeliers and a standout 40-foot dining table by Foster + Partners. 1402 W. Randolph Street; 312-526-3983.
Asador Bastian [$$$]
Opened just three months ago in an 1883 townhouse, this heralded chophouse from chef Doug Psaltis has a Basque spin. He takes culinary inspiration from the asadors of San Sebastián, Spain, aging the beef on the hoof to develop a richer avor. The prime cut is the Txuleton: a thickcut rib steak grilled on the bone over coal and sliced to share. Add crispy artichokes and a bone marrow–potato puree as sides, and don’t forget dessert from pastry chef Hsing Chen: rum cake or a burnt Basque cheesecake. Small bites and drinks are served in the ground- oor bar room (walk-ins welcome), while the moodily lit second-level dining room is for those with reservations.
214 W. Erie Street; 312-800-8935.
Atelier [$$$]
Seasons guide the cuisine at this American restaurant, helmed by rising executive chef and James Beard nalist Christian Hunter and situated in the space that formerly housed Elizabeth (and inheriting that eatery’s sta and kitchen). Hunter gets inspired by the latest o erings from the best Midwestern farms, nutritional anthropology, and sustainable production. “More than just an

expression of oneself, food is an expression of an environment,” he explains. The tasting menu ($190 per person) changes frequently, with unusual items such as rutabaga pappardelle, cardamom sourdough, and yuzu posset. We call him one to watch.
4835 N. Western Avenue; 773-681-0651.
Coquette [$$]
Step inside and be transported to a pink-and-peach Parisian dream—a little New Wave, a little Bauhaus, a lot idiosyncratic. The 40-seat French restaurant and wine bar’s immersive surroundings (starring groovy retro tiles) is just the start. Interaction is part of the experience; for instance, guests are o en invited behind the bar for complimentary pours and to select albums from the Coquette record collection to play during the evening. The fare is traditional French—think steak au poivre, onion soup, and salad niçoise. Fun fact: It’s right by Bambola, also on our hot list, and from the same hospitality group, Bonhomme. 165 N. Ogden Avenue; 312-929-3448.
Indienne [$$$]
Situated in a 19th-century printing warehouse, chef Sujan Sarkar’s eatery is Indian ne dining at its very best. Try the six-course seasonal tasting menu for $120, each dish exquisitely plated, or select from à la carte options such as chicken malai tikka with leeks, amul cheese, and pistachio dukkah or jackfruit katsu with lemon sour cream and dum ki gravy. “While Indian cuisine is growing in
popularity due to hardworking immigrant families, it doesn’t yet have its footing in mainstream American ne dining,” Sarkar says. “Too o en, Indian food is viewed as a to-go or casual dining option, rather than something you would enjoy as a sophisticated dining experience.” Indienne seeks to change that. Of note: It’s open Mondays, a rarity in Chicago, and thus perfect for NeoCon-goers. 217 W. Huron Street; 312-291-9427.
Lady May [$$]
Tucked behind the Wrigley Building in River North, this cocktail-forward eatery from Kentucky-born Big Brother alum Memphis Garrett is an ode to southern charm. The surroundings tell the love story of Lady May; expect oral details and a quaint, romantic air. Chef de cuisine Austin Blake’s menu features snacks like boiled peanut hummus with Cajun peanut oil and crudité or deviled eggs with caviar alongside dishes such as short rib helper, its fresh rigatoni paired with bone marrow and black tru e, and a pork chop with tallow sweet potato and collard greens. For cocktails try the sotol pineapple mojito, adorned with a brûléed wedge of the tropical fruit or, perhaps, the key lime margarita—and don’t skip the fried ice cream for dessert.
405 N. Wabash Avenue; 773-360-3500.
The Golden Girls Kitchen Chicago [$$]
Are you a fan of The Golden Girls? Then you’ll want to check out the new traveling pop-up restaurant in Wicker Park that’s inspired by the iconic sitcom.
The ticketed dining experience includes your choice of a Golden Main and a slice of cheesecake. (Add sides, desserts, beverages, and exclusive merch on arrival, as you like.) Dishes include the bacon lettuce potato sandwich (say it fast) with fries and Blanche’s Georgia-style cookies. But what you’re really here for is the campy set design straight out of the TV show: Snap a photo in Blanche’s boudoir, complete with shag carpet and palm-print bedspread, or pretend to chat with the ladies through the girls’ yellow kitchen phone.
1367 N. Milwaukee Avenue (inside Whiskey Business); check bucketlisters.com for tickets
Thomas
& Dutch [$$]
This American restaurant in Evanston from Farmheads hospitality group dubs itself “a modern Midwest gathering place serving elevated comfort food.” It’s a half-hour drive (or train ride) from the Mart to the North Shore, but if you’re in the mood for getting out of the city center, Thomas & Dutch could suit the group. Farm-fresh classics include beef Wellington, grilled rack of lamb, and birthday cake or peach cobbler for dessert. Unique cocktails include the beetroot Manhattan made with rye, pickled beet, and mushroom plus a sloe gin zz that adds tart cherry and rhubarb to the mix. Of note: Tip is included in the bill to provide a consistent income for all members of the team.
703 Church Street, Evanston; 847-492-9700.
