Justin Donnelly and Monling Lee of the Brooklyn, New York–based conceptual studio aim to deconstruct furniture forms. To wit: their Snow Fence chair, which debuted in March at Williamsburg gallery International Objects. “During the pandemic, inexpensive construction materials like snow fencing were repurposed to cordon off outdoor dining sheds and pedestrianize public streets,” explain the design duo, who reimagined that safety-orange polypropylene membrane as a powder-coated steel loveseat, blurring the line between form and function while diluting barriers both literal and metaphorical. jumbo.nyc SPRING MARKET.23 INTERIORDESIGN.NET

BAU

The newest brand from Sandler Seating places high value on both craftmanship and innovation, featuring quality Scandinavian-designed furniture targeted to the corporate and hospitality markets. Among the offerings is Bau, designed by Lammhults. The curvy modular lounge system, composed of six C- and S-shape units, features a softer, lower sit than one usually finds in a workplace or public space, courtesy of fiberboard seat shells covered in resilient polyurethane foam. The system is highly customizable, too—not only in terms of how the pieces, poised on adjustable glides, can be maneuvered and arranged, but also with respect to upholstery options, a nearly unlimited variety of colors and materials including leather, vinyl, and suede. inspecfurniture.com

FLOOD

thatcher Decades after artist Morris Louis’s death in 1962, his abstract expressionist paintings continue to influence visual culture. To wit: Designer Avery Thatcher channeled his work to create Flood, a mural-printed type II vinyl wallpaper. Taking a cue from Louis, who soaked his canvases with paint to emphasize materiality and fields of color, rather than the gesture of the brushstroke, Thatcher devised a hand-poured composition in which the focus becomes the hues themselves as well as their interactions. Flood is available in three colorways: vibrant Prism, earthy Deep Ocean, and neutral Sands. thatcherstudio.com

cedit In dreaming up his first-ever ceramic tile collection, buzzy Milan-based interior designer Federico Peri synthesized a diverse set of influences, from rammed-earth construction techniques to the Land Art movement as well as the mixed-media murals of English sculptor William Mitchell. The mellow-toned series, Compatta, encompasses both large-format porcelain slabs, produced in sizes up to 120 by 280 centimeters, and decors and inserts whose round-cornered geometric forms channel Gio Ponti. “The collection reads like pages of history recalling the spirit of the time”

pierre frey French talent Véronique Villaret has one foot in the fine art world and another in the decorative realm. A renowned textile and product designer as well as a stylist, she also has ties to the Supports/Surfaces movement that originated in Southern France in the 1960s and ’70s, having trained under its founder, Claude Viallat. The experimental movement’s mission was to liberate paint from the constraints of the canvas and apply it to other surfaces. That sensibility influences Rangiroa, a pattern inspired by the Mediterranean sun, the Polynesian landscape, and, curiously, the profile of laurel wreaths VÉRONIQUE VILLARET

fabric & wall covering

Rebecca Atwood’s fabric and wallpaper collections evoke the sensory pleasures of coastal Cape Cod, Massachusetts, where the Charleston, South Carolina–based designer grew up. Some of her (and her customers’) favorite designs over the years have been inspired by the seaside, geometric elements, her great-aunt’s needlepoint designs, and travels abroad. Although Atwood’s success continues to grow—she celebrates a decade in business this year—the work remains grounded in a set of artistic values and guiding principles. One, she explains, is “to never let diligence distract you from joy.” Joy certainly rings through her latest collection. Launching this spring are Little Palm, Floral Trellis, Tree Grove, Leafy Vines, and new colors of the best-selling Hills. To mark her anniversary, Atwood handpainted a limited edition of 40 linen pillows. rebeccaatwood.com

christopher farr cloth Anni Albers first gravitated to woven works by necessity: the fact that she was female barred her from other disciplines at the Bauhaus. But she remained devoted to the genre for her entire life, producing utterly restrained work that has influenced generations of designers. Her legacy is maintained by the Connecticut-based Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, which has an ongoing collaboration with Christopher Farr Cloth. Newly launched is a set of woven fabrics and wallpapers inspired by her work, as seen through the company’s palette. Patterns in the Anni Albers Collection include Black Mountain, Camino Real, Child’s Check, Hanging 1925, With Verticals, and Frieda. “Backdrop IV explores different techniques and approaches to painting, from airy fluidity to dense brushstrokes”

TURINI FAIRFARREN CLOISTERS

backdrop Following hot on the heels of its debut wallcovering collection, the five-year-old sustainable paint brand launches a second series, dubbed Backdrop IV. This go-round, husband-wife cofounders Caleb and Natalie Ebel were inspired by—what else!— paint. Natalie, who acts as the company’s creative director, teamed with in-house textile designer Annie Irwin to produce the patterns, which are digitally printed on textural nonwoven paper. Cloisters panels, measuring 9 by 15 feet, have the appearance of a handpainted geometric mural. Fairfarren features painterly abstract petals on neutral and black fields. A carefully restrained pattern of thin and squiggly lines crisscrosses the 54-inch repeat of Turini. Naturally, the company suggests paint pairings for each design. backdrophome.com

The Italian design company has been crafting interior products, including floor and wall tile, from stone for over 75 years. In hatching Passepartout, the brand’s inhouse design studio leaned on its commitment to sustainability to develop an innovative textured wall tile. Craftsmen repurpose offcuts from various honed stone tiles, using square and rectangular pieces to backdrop and highlight smaller tiles— thus creating a dramatic and unusual three-dimensional relief effect. All six of the company’s core stones are available for the series, including Bianco Carrara and Grigio Versilia marbles. salvatoriofficial.com

Its inaugural product, Connect, is a modular, personalizable cat tree pairing solid-ash dowels with ash-veneered plywood shelves—a decided departure from the usual bulky structures cat moms and dads typically live with. You can attached an upholstered cushion for a soft perch via leather straps, as well as a dangling toy that’s affixable to any top corner. The cat, of course, goes whenever it pleases. papuk.co

gubi The Danish manufacturer gets a dose of California cool via Carmel, a coffee table by Copenhagen design outfit OEO Studio. A coastal road trip sparked the formal vocabulary of the piece. “Nothing beats driving down the Big Sur, exploring nature, architecture, and culture,” OEO cofounder Thomas Lykke explains. A bohemian influence is evident in the table’s unique shape, easy sturdiness, and glossy finish: The piece positively shines courtesy of its single-fire glazed-porcelain top, available in Pacific Blue, Rock Red, Clam White, and Midnight Black colorways. Another California influence: Carmel works indoors and out, courtesy of matte-black powder-coated galvanized-steel legs and aluminum feet. A grouping of all three sizes nested together looks especially fetching. gubi.com

British product designer and all-around creative talent Samuel Ross is something of a phenom: only in his early 30s, he’s already collaborated with a host of artists and companies, from Mercedes-Benz to Virgil Abloh to Takashi Murakami; has pieces in multiple museum collections; and operates both a menswear line, A-COLD-WALL*, and a London industrial design studio whose purview includes interior installations, architecture, sculptural/visual communication, and more. For “Coarse,” his second solo show at the gallery, and his first in New York, Ross narrowed his panoptic vision, laser-focusing on redefining a single typology: the bench. He produced a series of six limited-edition brutalist objects with functional appeal, crafted of industrial materials such as concrete and plywood mixed in unexpected formations with powder-coated steel, granite, and fired wenge. Materiality, erosion, process, and memory are concepts he explores in pieces like Anaesthesia I and Slab. Pops of bright color accent the otherwise gray palette, such as the subtle hint of red-orange that slices through Border. friedmanbenda.com

sanayi313 Solid-wood furniture conveys a certain heft—telegraphing a quality (if we’re being anthropomorphic about it) that the pieces are rather sure of themselves. This Istanbul-based interdisciplinary studio led by Yinka Ilori teases out that confidence with Oblong, a 10-piece collection that comprises coffee, dining, and side tables, a stool, and a console. To compose the chunky round-cornered stools, which are at once sculptural and functional, the designer, who has a fashion background, used burnt oak and maple burl, the latter with a patterned finish that speaks to the beauty of the material. radnor It was a big spring for company founder Susan Clark, who celebrated new gallery programming at her showroom on Manhattan’s Upper East Side with the curated show “Crafted by Nature.” The exhibition spotlighted a bevy of one-off and extremely limited-edition products by various makers—including Clark herself. She wielded her design prowess to full effect in manifesting a unique coffee table carved from a solid core of Italian Siena marble in a manner that makes it appear at once luminous and substantial: A monolithic slab top is held aloft by a textured base bearing the imprint of drilling marks. She used the same marble to craft a limited-edition series of three smaller curve-base side tables. The pieces, collectively dubbed Core, highlight the complexity of Mother Earth’s materiality, and the technical expertise required to design and fabricate such deceptively simple forms. radnor.co

PANTHALASSA

tuell & reynolds Bringing the meditative calm of the beach indoors? That’s no small feat! But the California-based studio founded by Victoria Reynolds and Randy Tuell went to great lengths to do exactly that with a new cabinet, Panthalassa. Creating the piece, whose exterior bears the negative imprint of a windswept sand-scape, necessitated using a metal framework to cast a small section of the Oregon shoreline in plaster, which then served as a mold for forming bronze panels via the lost-wax process. The resulting piece evokes the natural beauty and movement of the coastal environment. The frame of the cabinet is steel, and wooden inserts can be customized. Panthalassa is available in light bronze, medium bronze, dark bronze, and the warm silver finish with silver-nitrate patina that’s shown here. tuellreynolds.com 90

abner henry “I had to call a friend and ask, ’Who’s the Met?’” Amish furniture maker Ernest Hershberger recalls, describing his reaction when the New York museum approached him to collaborate on a series inspired by its permanent collection. Soon put wise, the rural Ohio– based woodworker and his son, LaVern, trolled the institution’s furniture archives for creative fodder before eventually homing in on Impressionist paintings. Made by craftspeople in his closed community, the Abner Henry x The Met collection’s seven pieces range from Pirouette, a console with wavy painted-wood layers mimicking the tutus in Edgar Degas’s The Dance Class, to Severine, a console whose end-grain blocks reference the pointillism of a Georges Seurat canvas. The walnut tops of Duet nesting tables, inspired by the tender bond seen between a mother and son in an 1874 Edouard Manet painting, are treated to 24-karat gold dust sealed with an unobtrusive glaze. The collection is deeply tied to spiritual teachings. “One day I was walking through the workshop, frustrated it wasn’t coming together,” the elder Hershberger recalls. “Scripture and biblical principles helped me find a way through. That’s when they came to life.” abnerhenry.com

“Timber was a natural choice to match the spirit of the building”

The Japanese lifestyle brand embarked on a joint effort with famed British architect Norman Foster to develop a new collection, NF. The series, which encompasses a dining chair and table, two bar stools, a lounge chair, and a sofa, was initially conceived for the Foster Retreat, a hospitality-esque private guest residence on Martha’s Vineyard that hosts friends, family, and collaborators of the Norman Foster Foundation. Solid-wood frames in oak or maple are supplemented by soft fabric or leather upholstery, the attenuated outlines clearly defined but seemingly effortless. In all, the collection is a way to bring a piece of an award-winning mind directly into a client’s home. karimoku.com

flooring kvadrat Softness is a state of mind. It was also a goal designers Fien Muller and Hannes Van Severen prioritized when creating their new rugs for the Danish textile brand, March and July. The Muller Van Severen cofounders were inspired by the fleece of sheep at different times of the year: just before the spring clipping and right after the summer shearing. Accordingly, the pile height of March is taller—40mm to July’s 17mm. The power of color was another major influence, hence the versatile palette of nine bold and neutral hues. Rugs are 100 percent pure New Zealand tufted wool (natch), without adhesive backing. kvadrat.dk/en

cc-tapis ZIG-ZAG, SPLASH

Eleni Petaloti and Leonidas Trampoukis, the multidisciplinary design duo behind Objects of Common Interest, observed landscapes and natural materials during the process of developing their latest collection, Moiré. The designs, however, are decidedly and uncannily geometric. Zig-zag is a 230-by-300 cm design with jagged edges, as if an organic shape had been cut out by a pair of pinking shears. The 90-by-300cm Splash resembles a stretched-out paint-stroke. Quadratic is also an unexpected format, with squares that protrude from its 300cm-long sides. The trio—available in lilac lilla, cream, and burgundy colorways—is crafted of a combination of wool and Tencel using a jacquard weaving technique more typically used for textiles. cc-tapis.com

lzf What happens when a renowned hat designer applies her artistry to lighting? Something magical. Spanish milliner Candela Cort, collaborating for the first time with a company outside the fashion world, created a delicate yet flamboyant collection of numbered, signed suspension and wallmount fixtures that are also works of art. Made by hand in Cort’s Madrid atelier, Candela’s seemingly freeform arrangements of wood-veneer strips, laced together with strands of red wicker that signify balance, were inspired by Wassily Kandinsky’s abstract compositions. lzf-lamps.com

Fregio, Italian for “frieze,” refers to the centuries-old tradition of bas relief architectural panels—sculptural moments that truly come to life when hit with light. Turning these creations into a source of illumination is the poetic idea behind Fregio. Designer Andrea Anastasio worked with the historic Ceramica Gatti crafts workshop in Faenza, Italy, to transform floral-patterned glazed-ceramic bas reliefs into suspension and wall lamps measuring 47 and 29 inches, respectively. Straps at either end anchor the two ceramic sections to a metal profile that houses LEDs, emphasizing the mechanics of construction. foscarini.com

hastings tile & bath A black anodized-aluminum frame is the base from which Tuby expands. Conceived by Arter&Citton for Italian brand Arblu, the system is ideal for the bath, where it stands up exceptionally well to moisture. The modular framework encompasses 19 joints and seven tubular elements of different types and lengths, giving rise to numerous configurations of consoles onto which various options (mirrors, etc.) can be layered. Tuby’s two versions are Animè, with a smooth matte finish, and Telaio, which offers additional finishes and allows for more customization. Solid-surface basins and shelves are available in a broad palette of 44 colors. hastingstilebath.com ANIMÈ

During this year’s Milan Design Week, the company presented “The Creator’s Journey,” an exhibition of works by an international roster of female talents. Visitors to Palazzo del Senato, where the exhibit was held, were greeted by immersive digital experiences that encouraged attendees to express their inner artist, as well as Janet Echelman’s aerial sculpture, Noli Timere, which she describes as “an intimate inquiry into the relationship between fear and love—a visual exploration of the nature of separation, connection, and interdependence.” Ananda Nahú from Brazil, Ziling Wang from China, Pushpa Kumari from India, and Elle from the U.S. also developed the latest collection of Artist Editions, whereby the creatives layer their visions onto Kohler products. The series is part of the brand’s 150th anniversary celebration, displaying its ongoing dedication to the fusion of art and craftsmanship. kohler.com

GROOVY

“I am always looking for a different and fresh way to deliver water”

franz viegener One part disco, one part deco, the Groovy solid-brass faucets and tub fillers by the brand’s Argentina-based lead designer, Josef Moskovic, are a slice of fresh style for the bath. Named for the deep grooves that decorate its sides, the sleek, ultra-thin silhouette feels decidedly sculptural (and just a bit Swinging Sixties). The company is known for its precise engineering, here visible in the finely articulated cuts. In addition to wide-spread faucets and tub fillers, the series includes a hand shower, thermostatic wall valve and volume control, showerhead, robe hook, and towel bar. There are 12 finishes including polished brass and satin black, the latter a dark matte finish. franzviegener.com

DEAD FLAT

CHARLOTTE COSBY

farrow & ball The paint company’s Dead Flat finish is its most matte ever, with an impressively low 2 percent sheen that limits light bounce—so your eye takes in only color, color, and more color. The flatness serves to minimize imperfections while making the hue appear more enveloping and uninterrupted. “Dead Flat’s super-matte quality has the effect of making our colors look even richer, especially the darker shades,” says brand creative director Charlotte Cosby. The multisurface paint can be applied to walls, woodwork, and metal—even radiators. As with all the company’s finishes, it’s water based, low odor, and low VOC and, unusually for a matte product, it’s also scuff-resistant, washable, and wipeable—so rooms stay pristine long after they’re painted. No wonder Dead Flat took five years to formulate. farrow-ball.com

CORCRETE

corcrete Mixing warm and cool elements has never looked hotter. Nina Ruthe and David Antonin of Germany’s Design Studio Niruk love to explore and develop innovative materials in their work—a creative process that bore Corcrete. Interested in making a less heavy, more natural looking concrete for interior design and architecture applications, the pair added cork to the mix, rendering it 40 percent lighter. The result looks like terrazzo from a distance but is more intriguing up close, with a pleasant hand—velvety and warm. The versatile product can be used as interior floor and wall coverings as well as for furniture and other surfaces. The addition of cork (offcuts from Portuguese wine production) also reduces the need for sand, an increasingly scarce resource. Corcrete comes in white, black, and gray, with no standard dimensions: It’s made exclusively for each project. corcrete.de

nest studio Brand founder and creative director Jessica Davis first collaborated with Katie Gong when she specified the California-based artist’s wood sculptures for her interior design projects. Drawn to its organic nature, Davis thought Gong’s work would translate perfectly to hardware, and asked if she was game to team up. Three years in the making, the resulting Knot series translates (and scales down) the artist’s steam-bent woodwork into a four-piece line of knobs and pulls, the conversion accomplished using a lostwax casting process. BomBom Outdoor has adjustable bolster cushions that can be arranged in any way desired atop the seat. The upholstery is a cozy quilted Méridien outdoor fabric in hues that are sugar sweet and reminiscent of licorice Allsorts. Vasconcelos says she is inspired by everyday life. “As a Portuguese woman, the savoir faire and materials specific to my culture are essential: the azulejos that adorn our indoor and outdoor spaces, along with the crochet doilies that decorate sofas, tables, and televisions in all Portuguese homes.” It’s that sense of play and whimsy that defines BomBom. roche-bobois.com

Taking notes from her houses in Marfa, Texas, and Todos Santos, Mexico, on the Baja California peninsula, niche hotelier and El Cosmico proprietor Liz Lambert filled her Far West collection of outdoor textiles with colorful sarape stripes and soft textures. The series, Lambert explains, was inspired by a synthesis of many influences: “a lifetime of traveling throughout the Southwest, saddle blankets, colorful heavy Baja hoodies popularized by hippies and surfers in the ’70s, the finely woven serapes worn by vaqueros that we interpreted for robes early in my hotel career, Peruvian and Bolivian textiles, and fabrics I’ve collected over the years.” Of course, the textile offerings—including Tejas Stripe, Campo Stripe, Baja Stripe, and Roadrunner Stripe, plus flatwoven rug Playa Stripe—are all made of Perennials’ tough 100 percent solution-dyed acrylic that’s fade-, mildew-, and UV-resistant as well as bleach-cleanable, with a performance finish molecularly bonded to the fibers for longlasting protection. perennialsfabrics.com
