seating Swiss-born designer and Pin-Up Home CDO Ben Ganz is quite familiar with de Sede’s DS-2011; his parents had one in their living room when he was growing up. It’s a full-circle moment, then, that he had a hand in developing a special edition of the sofa, available in its original two-seater form plus an armchair and stool. The name, Harlequin, is fitting in the way the color-blocked leather upholstery suggests a court jester’s attire, but another key reference was Le Corbusier’s color experiments. With so much Swiss heritage, it only made sense to bring the collection out to the Alps for a photo shoot. The result, says de Sede CEO Monika Walser, delivers on what she was after: “a ‘wow’ effect.” desede.ch; pinuphome.com

product Boborelax recap This ingenious 1967 design,

fritz hansen In the 1950s, while he was designing the Sydney Opera House, Danish architect Jørn Utzon made a prototype of a small stool. More than 60 years later, Fritz Hansen has put it into production for the first time. Like his architecture, the 17-inch-high Utzon stool incorporates repetitive shapes drawn from nature. Seven oiled-beech spheres, with brass details, form the seat and bloom like mushrooms atop steam-bent beech-veneer legs. “In this stool, you have Utzon’s fascination with organic shapes, his creativity and sculptural approach,” says Fritz Hansen creative design director Marie-Louise Høstbo. “The base is inspired by how he perceived nature as the ultimate model.” Weighing 24 pounds, the playful tripod perch is light enough to move around but sturdy enough for commercial spaces. fritzhansen.com

Natalie and Caleb Ebel, Backdrop’s married cofounders, believe in the power of paint to transform interior spaces. That conviction permeates the company’s continued expansion into wallcoverings, including the graphic Monte Carlo. Inspired by white pips on black dice— perhaps rolling across a casino table near the sea—the pattern is playful but still classic, evoking bold polkadotted textiles and fashion fabrics. Across the five colorways, the dots are warm off-white, set against earthy brown, soft blue, light beige, deep green, or blackened carbon. Monte Carlo was designed in L.A. but printed on a nonwoven ground in Brooklyn. backdrophome.com

The New York manufacturer strives to develop work that is, per brand materials, “provocative, inspiring, and of our time.” The energy and ethos of El Muro, a collaboration with seven creatives of Mexican descent, is exactly that—and then some. Incorporating brightly hued botanical illustrations, Blanka Amezkua’s mural honors the knowledge of Indigenous peoples. Boundless, by Francisco Donoso, questions barriers with chromatic designs inspired by chain-link fences. samuel & sons

Textile innovator Lori Weitzner joins forces with Samuel & Sons once again, this time to prove that dramatic statement pieces can also wrangle drapery. Acrobatics is her 15th collection for the trimmings company—and it’s a beaut. The holdbacks are sculptural but versatile (and not too busy!). Wood beads alternate with cuffed leather in Backflip. Aerial is a wide belt of intricate laser-cut suede. Chunky chain-links of wrapped linens create distinctive but measured texture for Somersault. Cartwheel is hand-stitched faux leather, while Tightrope is a finely latticed take on the death-defying stunt tool. In all, Weitzner calls the collection “jewelry for the home.” We couldn’t agree more. samuelandsons.com

Since debuting 10 years ago, Biobased Xorel, a version of the durable performance textile that’s crafted from renewable sugarcane, has become one of Carnegie’s most popular products. The material is now a centerpiece of the manufacturer’s Go-To collection, a tightly curated portfolio conceived as a one-stop shop for projects demanding rigorous, ecoconscious, and affordable solutions. The heart of the series is a refreshed version of Xorel Strie, originally introduced in 2013. The design, incorporating 85 percent bio-based content, is a sustainable and bleach-cleanable choice that holds up well in heavy-use interior applications such as healthcare settings—and now comes in a 39-strong palette of hues updated based on designer feedback. Joining Strie in the Go To grouping are two brand-new polyesters, Proof and Article, as well as the wool-blend Aspen, all surpassing 100,000 double-rubs. carnegiefabrics.com

promemoria Italian designer Romeo Sozzi created the Battista folding table in 1978, ten years before founding the luxury furniture company Promemoria. In the decades since, the 23-inch-high black-painted beech table has become a bestseller, but it is still made by hand in the brand’s workshop near Lake Como. At Milan Design Week, Promemoria introduced a new polychrome version in a limited edition of 50: Tribute to Mondrian. Pieces of lati and tulip wood form the top’s abstract geometric design, with ebony or walnut inlay; the timber modules are painted pastel hues like those the table’s namesake, Piet Mondrian, used in the 1920s, before adopting his signature bold palette. Each piece, like the Dutch modernist’s canvases, is unique. promemoria.com

“Our role as artists and designers is to offer people a new and inspiring narrative to build a progressive future”

COLOUR SHIFT, RADIANCE, FREEDOM, CIRCULAR RADIANCE

rive roshan Amsterdam-based artists Ruben de la Rive Box and Golnar Roshan aim to shift perspectives and evoke a sense of wonder. Their collectible objects and immersive installations explore space, color, and light, and the Radiance collection is no exception: It turns furniture into shimmering works of art. The limited-edition bench and square and rectangular coffee tables are made of textured colored glass (with timber substrate) in dark ruby, golden citrine, and pink citrine respectively; the surface reflects light and seems to move like rippling water. Despite their delicate effect, the pieces are highly functional: Rive Roshan contracts with a glass company that usually works on architectural projects. Circular Radiance wall panels, tall Colour Shift floor lights, and Freedom vessels (made of 3D-printed sand) are other highlights from the studio. SAMUEL ESTEVES

Forgive Gabriel Biselli, cofounder and director of young Brazilian studio Clube, if he gets a little brainy when describing Sauna System, his gym-inspired furniture collection. Since receiving his architecture degree in 2018, Biselli has taught at universities in São Paulo and studied the history of architecture and urbanism. Thus, the tubular anodized-aluminum ladder, shelf, side table, chair, and bench (with leather seat cushion) are more than the sum of their parts: “They’re objects that construct spaces,” Biselli says. Grouped together, they look like a workout room. Individually, they’re cool industrial pieces ideal for a loft or gallery. Made in São Paulo, all are gray-toned except the bright-red chair, which is also available in custom colors. NB: Though suitable for wet environments, the furniture would get too hot for comfort in an actual sauna. clube.site

CARTELA

CARTELA SIDE TABLES II, III, IV

furniture

héctor esrawe Most of us never look twice at the piles of cardboard we have at home or stacked in the warehouse. It takes a creative mind like Héctor Esrawe’s to examine the geometry and repeating sequences of their honeycomb cells and use them as inspiration for functional sculptures: the eight-piece Gear series. The Mexican artist and furniture designer used the material to create models resembling layers of cardboard and then cast wax molds in bronze or aluminum (with aged, polished, or hand-rubbed patinas). The striking results are a world away from a UPS box. The 6-foot-wide coffee table evokes a stack of shiny gold coins, and the nearly 7-foot-tall Cartela floor light glows like a mythical treasure. At just 15 inches high, side tables II, III, and IV are no less arresting and emphasize the honeycomb’s texture. Made at a foundry in Mexico City, each design comes in a limited edition of 14 (seven in bronze, seven in aluminum). Through Les Ateliers Courbet. ateliercourbet.com

“Imperfections are like tiny works of art that embody the true essence of natural materials”

ashley botten design

PORTRAIT: LAUREN MILLER

Ashley Botten opened her eponymous interior design studio in 2008 and has long created custom furniture for clients. In December, she introduced a collection of tables, seating, shelving, and accessories, making her pieces available to the public for the first time. Among them is Malibu, which pairs two flared metal podiums with four 3½-footlong shelves of Douglas fir or white oak. The 6-foot-tall unit is no wallflower: Its steel, brass, or copper podiums are treated with a special finish to create a mottled watercolor effect that stands out in any room. “I love how the fluidity of the watercolor contrasts with the solidity of metal,” Botten says. Malibu is made to order in Canada, and the finishes and wood size can be customized. Check it out at the brand’s new Toronto showroom. ashleybottendesign.com

To create the Iris tables, Alejandra Gandía-Blasco took countless photographs of sunrises and sunsets in Spain, Portugal, and Germany. An artist as well as the creative and communication deputy director of her family’s company, Gandía-Blasco then distilled their colors into Pantone hues and developed 12 abstract designs that resemble mosaics or stained glass. The patterns, digitally printed using ceramic pigments on vitrified tempered glass, form the tops of powder-coated aluminum coffee, side, and dining tables. Iris comes in three shapes and color ranges—warm (orange/red), stormy (blue/green), and cool (black/white)—that capture the nuances of light at different times of day and in varied weather conditions. Suitable for outdoor use, the tables won’t fade when placed in the sun, but the colors will dapple beautifully onto the floor. gandiablasco.com

IN PARTNERSHIP WITH DAVIS FURNITURE

AHEAD OF THE CURVE BY DANINE ALATI

LucidiPevere’s modular furniture collection designed for Davis Furniture showcases a symphony of sweeping forms and gentle arcs that are tempered by sturdy frames and sculptural bases. 1

Sloping contours and soft geometries steal the spotlight in LucidiPevere’s latest design for Davis Furniture. Arcular is a modular lounge collection—comprised of a single-seat lounge chair, two-and three-seat sofas, and a range of ganging modular units—that embarks on a bold exploration of simple and compound curves. “We wanted to create a collection that not only embodies elegance and sophistication but also offers utmost comfort and versatility,” says LucidiPevere. “Arcular is the result of our fascination with curves and soft geometry, and we believe it will inspire designers to create dynamic and inviting spaces.” In their second collaboration with Davis Furniture, Paolo Lucidi and Luca Pevere— the masterminds behind the renowned Italian industrial design studio—bring their Milan-honed expertise to the forefront, synergizing with the US manufacturer’s decades-long legacy in the contract industry. 2

Constructed over a sturdy plywood and steel frame, the series is softened by tailored upholstery draped across plush foam for an elevated level of comfort. An integrated welt tactfully traces Arcular’s gentle bends and can be customized in matching or contrasting fabrics and leathers. Each upholstered unit adroitly sits on a sculptural cast aluminum base, blending commercial durability with a discerning sense of style that extends throughout the entire collection. A defining characteristic of the Arcular Collection is its broad design versatility. With modular units such as left and right-end units, straight connector units, and 45-degree and 90-degree corner units, designers have the flexibility to create various configurations. The unit’s base can be further customized with a selection of polished aluminum and standardized powdercoat colors, ensuring seamless integration into any design scheme. Power options can also be specified underneath the upholstered frame for increased functionality and user support. 1 Overhead detail of Arcular’s sweeping curved arm and sculptural leg; 2 Arcular’s Lounge Chair

JOMO TARIKU

jomo tariku “Zagwe venerates the past and moves the dialogue of vernacular design forward”

Virginia-based artist and furniture maker Jomo Tariku grew up in Ethiopia and traveled throughout Africa as a child. His bold modern designs incorporate diverse references from the continent—hair combs, water jugs, antelope horns—and many have entered museum collections. In conceiving the Zagwe wardrobe, his first foray into case goods, Tariku looked to the Yemrehanna Kristos church in northern Ethiopia. Built around the 12th century during the Zagwe dynasty, the architectural marvel was constructed of alternating layers of stone and wood. The wardrobe emulates that striped look in American walnut and bleached ash veneer. Measuring 6 ⅔ feet tall, 3 ½ wide, and 2 deep, the wardrobe is handmade to order in Philadelphia with a four-month lead time. Through Wexler Gallery. wexlergallery.com

dinesen Back in 1992, when he designed his London residence, the acclaimed British architect John Pawson specified 45 cm-wide floorboards from Thomas Dinesen, head of his family’s handcrafted-wood flooring company. Dinesen then created a custom dining table from the same planks, so that it appeared to rise directly from the floor. Impressed by the commission, Pawson forged a friendship and business partnership with Dinesen (who in 2021 handed the reins of the Denmark-based brand to son Hans Peter), specifying his planks in seminal projects such as the Design Museum in London. The Pawson Furniture Collection speaks to this heritage, with new iterations of the pared-back Douglas fir pieces forged for the architect’s home 30-odd years ago—all based on the floorboard span. There’s the Dining Series, encompassing bench, stool, and table, the latter now with a slender oak strip inset between the two boards comprising its top (rather than the shadow gap of the original). There’s also the Lounge collection, its chair, sofa, and daybed customizable with upholstery from another Danish heavyweight: Kvadrat. dinesen.com

The kaleidoscopic sevenpiece collection, hand-knotted in Nepal, promises to bring a joyful energy to any room. Prisma, a rectangular or circular Tibetan-wool rug, plays on Smith’s signature stripes, with rings of 22 colors that seem to reverberate from the center. Lines of wool undulate in the trippy Spray Swirl and break apart in gridlike Parachute Sky and Parachute Earth. LAURA BILDE, LINNEA BLÆHR

Danish designers Laura Bilde and Linnea Blæhr acknowledge that they stand on the shoulders of women like Anni Albers and Ray Eames who paved the way for future female artists. The duo pays tribute to their predecessors with their second carpet collection for Ege: SHE. Bilde and Blæhr made the six patterns using techniques common in the 1930s and ’40s, embracing the imperfections of a line that’s drawn, cut, or pieced together by hand. SHE comes in six popular thirties colors—warm gray, light blue, burgundy, dark blue, ivory, and dark brown—that can be combined or left monochrome. The wall-to-wall carpets or rugs (in standard widths of 13 feet) are made of pure new-wool yarn spun from extra-long fibers that make them durable enough for heavy commercial applications. egecarpets.com SPRING MARKET.24 INTERIORDESIGN.NET

Breathe a little romance into your interiors with Coquette. Founder Avery Thatcher conceived the tile’s scalloped border as an abstraction of the quintessential Rococo motif: the shell. “It’s based on the work of the great set designers of the Italian Rococo, known for their ephemeral works of architecture,” Thatcher says. Coquette invites you to create a scenography of your own. The 8-inch square tiles, handmade in Mexico of pigmented cement, are available in three formats (Frame, Fringe, and Field) and five colorways (including pert burgundy/pink) and suit walls or floors and residential or commercial installations. thatcherstudio.com

“Come as you are” is the concept behind Tubin, a 16-inch table lamp that celebrates its materiality— raw-milled brass or aluminum, detailed with enamel—by playing finishes against each another to accentuate their inherent qualities. “The tubing is meant to be seen for what it is, which in turn led to applying the enamel by brush to accentuate its paint-ness,” the Brooklyn-based designer says. The modular assembly allows reconfiguration: Parts can be rotated at connection points, clicking into place at each 90-degree turn, so the light can point in different directions. jamesdieter.co

“Treeline got us out of our studio and into the forest, learning and collaborating across disciplines to try to make meaningful, scalable, lasting change in the world”

stickbulb In the process of creating Treeline, studio cofounders Russell Greenberg and Christopher Beardsley discovered a whole new supply chain: salvaged pin oak from New York City’s urban forest, i.e. trees felled during a storm or that needed to be taken down for construction or safety concerns, thereby diverting it from the waste stream. Working with Brooklyn wood supplier Tri-Lox, Stickbulb designed a timber enclosure (available in black, natural, and white) that surrounds an LED beam of impressive intensity, up to 1,800 lumens per foot. The center- or end-mount fixture can be specified 4, 5, 6, or 8 feet long, with direct and/or indirect lighting. There’s even a clever patent-pending panel that opens without tools to reveal electrical components and wiring connections, facilitating easy maintenance, repair, and end-of-life processing. stickbulb.com TREELINE RUSSELL GREENBERG, CHRISTOPHER BEARDSLEY

TOLOMEO MICRO COPPER

artemide How do you breathe new life into an absolute classic? The Tolomeo Micro Copper special edition builds on the formidable foundation of the original designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina in 1986, which won Italy’s prestigious Compasso d’Oro award. This latest lamp iteration features an innovative and sustainable brushed-copper finish, obtained through a chemical process called anodic oxidation—essentially an acceleration of natural patination. The 14.5-inch body otherwise remains the same, with an uber-functional aluminum arm and diffuser, die-cast aluminum joints and tension-control knobs, stainless-steel cables, and a weighted steel base. The lamp can be positioned in infinite ways, providing an LED beam that rotates 360 degrees. artemide.com

GIANT DREAMSCAPE

michele varian The designer drew inspiration from her very first textile collection, which consisted of hand-cut appliqué patterns, to create something entirely fresh. The Giant Dreamscape pendant pairs topquality Belgian linen with layers of gauzy cotton using a new technique to realize a landscape of undulating mountains and celestial bodies; the forms appear to move when the shade gently sways. Varian began her career designing pillows using available fabrics, later expanding into light fixtures—primarily in brass and copper. The new collection melds the two product categories and “expands on that characteristic use of quality raw materials in creating fresh luxury interior objects,” she explains. vipp When Vipp kitchen was introduced in 2011, it was something of a revelation—or is that a revolution? The brand’s freestanding modules, originally launched in black powder-coated steel, are now available in a new material with the same minimalist swagger. The V3 kitchen’s units, in naturally anodized aluminum, are detailed with vertically extruded profiles that lend the industrial finish an elegant edge. As before, there are wall, tall, and island modules, the latter with 4-millimeterthick stainless-steel countertops. The cabinets have discreetly integrated handles; the refrigerator and freezer cabinets sport long handles with rounded rubber inner edges to manage the weight and pressure of the heavier air-sealed doors. Kit out the units with either integrated gas or induction burners. vipp.com/en-us

concrete collaborative CAROLINE Z HURLEY

Brooklyn artist and textile designer Caroline Z Hurley created Strands cement tiles via an exercise in restraint, devising the patterns by restricting herself to using only scissors and three colors of paper, cut into diverse shapes and arrangements. The resulting 8-inch modules feature floating motifs and can be combined and arranged any which way. The tiles themselves—made from white Portland cement, sand, stone, and natural pigments—are hydraulically pressed and will gain a patina over time. Measuring ⅝-inch-thick, they’re engineered for use in wet and high-traffic areas and come in a range of colorways including cream mixed with rose, celano, or yellow. concrete-collaborative.com

kohler With patterns mimicking the arches of a traditional hammam, the Transcendence tile collection is all about rejuvenation—on several levels. Designer Nada Debs tapped into her experience designing these Turkish steam rooms to dream up a graphic motif that’s minimal but impactful. Tiles utilize Kohler’s pioneering WasteLAB process, which leverages manufacturing waste streams as usable material—in this case giving pottery leftovers new life as ecologically thoughtful product. Transcendence encompasses two sizes of field tiles, a 3-by-12-inch module in four patterns and a 6-by-6-inch format in three, all in a soothing palette rooted in nature. kohler.com

maora ceramic Masquespacio, the Spanish studio led by Ana Hernández and Christophe Penasse, teamed with the skilled artisans at Maora Ceramic to create a range of product designs distinguished by bold nature-based colors and intriguingly hand-drawn patterns. There are three subcollections, including 20-centimeter tiles scored with organic lines, 26 art pieces, and even a set of flowerpots. The works were created without any preconceived inspiration; rather, Hernández tapped into her subconscious to bring the ideas forth. “The shift to 100 percent recycled materials comes at no cost to customers. We want to create an incentive to buy non-virgin material”

3form Know New Plastic is a cleverly named initiative from the material innovator that combines a traditional mechanical recycling process with a novel molecular one that increases the salvaged-content potential of 3form products. It creates new high-quality materials from all sorts of waste unsuitable for mechanical recycling—clothing and carpet fibers, dense plastic containers, etc. Textures, the inaugural collection utilizing the process, comprises 100 percent recycled content, resulting in a lower-carbon-footprint resin than one created from newly extracted fossil fuels. One textured Varia panel, for instance, diverts the equivalent of 3,296 plastic water bottles from the landfill. The line comes in 21 textures including six just-launched designs that don’t compromise the translucency and durability for which the brand is known. PINCH

Working as a jewelry maker in Budapest, architect and metalsmith Eva Anna Gulacsi dreamt of creating something for the home. “In a world of mass production, I find great value in the imperfect beauty of handmade things,” she says. Her first collection—called Pinch—consists of door handles, wall hooks, and knobs first conceived in clay, then sand-cast in solid brass or bronze. The sinuous shapes were inspired by human touch, the organic textures meant to stimulate our senses when using them. Pieces are hand-sanded and -polished but left unfinished so they’ll naturally patina. evaannaobjects.com

TURBORAMA

The designer makes what’s usually invisible the center of attention by using cord to string together salvaged plastic sheaths that previously protected cables in electrical installations—an inexpensive, recyclable material that’s also shock- and weatherproof—thereby transforming this construction staple into something beautiful and with a new function. The result is Turborama, a folding partition that can work indoors or out as a divider or filtering screen, each with variations in color, density, and rhythm. Cogné suggests using it in place of walls: “By stripping away the structures and layers of the dwelling, the project questions the devices that separate the private from the outside.” @cogneemma 176

Many years in the making, the Stone Textures line pairs high-performance acoustic material with organic veining. The three patterns—Marble, Travertine, and Granite—highlight but don’t copycat the characteristics of the stones for which they’re named. An algorithm was used to create a uniquely natural pattern for each texture, offered on 9 mmthick PET felt encompassing 60 percent recycled content. The manufacturer took special care to ensure the digitally printed water-based, UV-cured ink doesn’t overpower the heathered look of the material. Turf also developed two new products that support book-matching and continuous texture across multiple panels, similar to what one might do with real stone. Colors were specially chosen to work with each surface type: Marble is available in eight colors, Travertine in 12, and Granite in 11. turf.design

stone cycling You probably wouldn’t think of the trash from your backyard barbecue as a source for wall cladding—but it is! CornWall, by Dutch building-material specialist Stone Cycling, is bio-based: made from corncobs, a byproduct of the farming industry that’s usually left in the field to rot or is burned as biomass, in both cases releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. CornWall stores more CO2 than is used in its production, making the tile a climate-positive alternative for interior walls. The product, also available as sheet goods, comes in eight naturally pigmented colors and features a moisture-repellent coating. The recyclable and biodegradable modules, manufactured with the help of Belgium-based Circular Matters, are even supplied with a demountable anchoring system and are not glued, so they can be uninstalled and reused elsewhere if needed. stonecycling.com CORNWALL

CRAFT THE FUTURE

“BAU draws attention to the materials used and emphasizes the value of our natural resources. We should use them carefully”

architectural products

olivari BAU, a reference to the Bauhaus movement that inspired it, utilizes leftover chippings of marble from the Henraux quarry in Carrara—incidentally, the same one Michelangelo used to envision his sculptures. Design Studio Niruk combined these elegant leftovers with drawn brass to create an expressive door handle with a strong geometric shape. The concept was kickstarted when designers Nina Ruthe and David Antonin participated in an earlier project combining porcelain and brass; they later experimented with a variety of materials before landing on the idea of using marble. The grip’s streamlined shape allows many to be drilled out of each marble block; the door and window handles are then cut, polished, and attached to the metal (available in nine alloys) via a special adhesive. Both materials are particularly durable, ensuring longevity. BAU is available in Marquina black, Versilia gray, and Statuario Altissimo white marble. olivari.it NINA RUTHE, DAVID ANTONIN

Cofounders Michaele Simmering and Johann Pauwen named their 2020 Rugosa collection for a seaside summer house in Rhode Island, hoping to capture its easygoing vibe in solid-pine furniture. So it’s fitting that the Los Angeles studio has adapted those designs for its first outdoor series: Material Studies Rugosa. The four-piece collection, made in California, exchanges the wood planks for slender profiles of powdercoated aluminum resistant to rust and corrosion— and thus durable enough for New England (or desert) climes. It comprises a lounge chair with Trillium-filled cushions and Greenguard-certified, outdoor-rated Kvadrat upholstery (or COM) plus side, coffee, and dining tables with bronzed-glass tops. Structures are treated with rich, shiny coats of oxblood, lapis, or lime white (or custom colors) that contrast boldly with the natural environment. kalonstudios.com

SUNMOON

“Sunmoon creates your own exclusive oasis”

Tailored, bespoke, elegant: Such is the sartorial vocabulary that José Manuel Ferrero uses to describe the work of estudi{H}ac, his product and interior design studio in Valencia, Spain. Ferrero aims to bring the meticulousness of a Savile Row suit maker to every project, and the Sunmoon vis-à-vis tatami bed is no exception. True to form, he found inspiration in men’s fashion, translating the pointed silhouette of dress shoes into the beveled edges of a powder-coated aluminum platform. The distinctive profile lightens the 7-by-7½-foot frame, which supports handwoven aluminum headboards (in opposite corners) and an acrylic-upholstered Dryfeel foam mattress with modular backrests. The gazebo version adds a retractable fabric roof structure, embedded LEDs, and privacy curtains to form a stylish cocoon for lounging day or night. varaschin.it
