EDITOR’S COMMENT
Put money into fire research Will 2018 be the year the Government finally sorts out the flammability regulations? Since they were introduced in 1988 there have always been worries about the testing methodology and the safety of the flame retardant chemicals themselves. The argument has always been that the possible effect the chemicals may have on our health was a price worth paying to reduce the number of fires. However, research published last month in the scientific journal Chemosphere appears to throw doubt on that. Four sofabeds were tested: two complied with the regulations thanks to chemicals, one complied by using natural materials and a technical weave, while the fourth didn’t comply as it was designed for the mainland European market. ‘The sofabeds containing flame retardants burnt somewhat more slowly than the non-flame retarded EU sofabed, but in doing so produced significantly greater quantities of the main fire toxicants, carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Assessment of the effluents’ potential to incapacitate and kill is provided showing the two UK flame retardant sofabeds to be the most dangerous, followed by the sofabed made with European materials. The UK sofabed made only from natural materials (Cottonsafe) burnt very slowly and produced very low concentrations of toxic gases. Including fire toxicity in the FFR would reduce the chemical flame retardants and improve fire safety,’ says the research. ‘Flame retardants increase the fire toxicity of UK furniture. Flame retardants have a large effect on bench-scale flammability tests. Flame retardants have a negligible effect on large scale fire tests. Avoiding chemical flame retardants produces furniture of greatly increased fire safety,’ it concludes. Since it ended a consultation on updating the regulations in 2016 there has been silence from the Government. If it can find money to introduce railcards for millennials, then why not find some more to get on with funding research into the safety of a product that is in everybody’s home.

Feather & Black saved but no buyer for Multiyork Bed manufacturer Hilding Anders is to return to the UK market after buying Feather & Black from administration. The former Dunlopillo owner is to retain the Feather & Black brand name and 17 of its 25 outlets: three stores (Leeds, Manchester and Chingford) will close along with five Multiyork concessions. The sale saves the jobs of 102 of the chain’s 123 staff. Joanne Bennett, Hilding Anders cfo, said: ‘I have been aware of what the Feather & Black brand stands for, the quality of its products and have been a regular visitor to my local Feather & Black store for many years. I am also very excited by this opportunity to work with the team to build on the brand strength and grow the business together.’ Pepyn Dinandt, Hilding Anders executive chairman, said: ‘Feather & Black has a strong market position, excellent customer loyalty and a deep heritage within the UK market. We will build on Feather & Black’s solid platform and grow
the business across both stores and ecommerce. We will continue with Feather & Black’s current customer and product positioning while also looking at further ways to improve our productivity and profitability.’ Meanwhile, a ‘managed wind down’ of sister chain Multiyork began last month after administrators failed to find a buyer. ‘While we recognise that there were some offers made, they were not at a level that either produced an acceptable outcome for the company’s stakeholders or could guarantee the future stability of the business,’ said Allan Graham, joint administrator. ‘We will continue efforts to sell all – or parts of – the business; but during this period of managed wind down, the process of selling in-store display items and other business assets will begin.’ At Multiyork’s Thetford head office and manufacturing facility 112 people were made redundant last month. The stores employed about 500 staff.
Walsh warns on profits Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo, has warned that full-year profits will be at the lower end of expectations. ‘While trading over the first six weeks of the second half has been encouraging, with an acceleration in like for like sales growth in both the UK and the rest of Europe, in light of the consumer outlook we are taking a more cautious view of the second half and now expect underlying profit before tax for the full year will be towards the bottom end of the current range of market expectations,’ he said. Analysts had forecast profits of between £13.8m and £16.5m in the year to 28 April. UK like for like sales in the six weeks to
9 December were up by 1.4%, with flooring sales up by 2.7%. ‘I’d rather be the established market leader in uncertain times than a new entrant. Arguably, the customer has never had it so good and the advent of a national competitor [Tapi] means that we have had to respond with a raft of offers to ensure that we remain the most popular choice for customers. This activity can, of course, impact margins and partially mitigates the upside of some of our capital refurbishment,’ he said. Pre-tax profits in the six months to 28 October fell from £4.1m to £300,000 as it was hit by lower exchange rate; increased staff costs as it upped wages;
UK sales rose in the six weeks to 9 December
lower bed sales as it revamped its bed offer; investment in IT; and its European stores returning to the red. Average UK flooring sales transactions rose by 9.1%, while IFC now accounts for 18.5% of sales. Group sales rose by 2.6% to £228.1m as UK sales dropped by 0.8% and European sales rose 20.1%.
Irregularities prompt drop in Steinhoff value After telling shareholders that its 2017 accounts cannot be trusted, Steinhoff International has warned that the same applies to 2016’s. The group’s share price has plunged by more than 80% and it is looking to refinance its billions of pounds of debts and potentially sell assets.

The Harvey’s, Bensons, Relyon and Dunlopillo parent says: ‘issues concerning the validity and recoverability of certain Steinhoff Europe balance sheet assets under scrutiny in the 2017 audit work, are also relevant to the 2016 consolidated financial statements.’
As a result its 2016 results ‘will need to be restated and can no longer be relied upon.’ Markus Jooste, chief executive, resigned followed by chairman and major shareholder Christo Wiese and his son Jacob resigning as directors.

Buy agenda continues as Victoria sales jump Victoria increased pre-tax profits by 5% to £8.78m in the six months to 30 September, despite the £1.84m cost of closing its Kidderminster factory and reorganising its logistics operation. UK and European sales rose by 16.6% to £130.69m. Total sales rose 24% to £189.5m. Net debt at 30 September was £98.6m, which Geoff Wilding, Victoria chairman, described as representing ‘a very comfortable 1.77x adjusted EBITDA. The markets in which Victoria trades – the UK, Europe, and Australia – continue to experience demand.’ Victoria is maintaining tight control over costs and inventory to ensure the group is well positioned should selling conditions change. ‘To that end, the group is very focused on the level of variability in our cost base. Victoria is more lowly-geared operationally than I suspect some shareholders appreciate. Over half of Victoria’s cost base fluctuates directly with sales (eg raw materials and energy) and a further circa 30% is capable of being varied within a few weeks (eg labour, logistics and marketing costs), should conditions change,’ said Wilding ‘Growth in earnings per share will continue from both organic improvements and acquisitions. There is no shortage of acquisition opportunities, although we remain very selective. Our strong, positive cashflow, together with supportive bankers and shareholders, ensure further acquisition-based growth can be funded. By maintaining very strict criteria and strong price discipline, I am confident that future acquisitions will continue to be earnings enhancing and a useful tool to both strengthen the group and create wealth for shareholders,’ he said.
Barker & Stonehouse’s Guildford store
Eleventh branch for B&S Barker & Stonehouse’s second store in South East England opened on Boxing Day. Following the opening of its Hove, West Sussex store in April, Guildford, Surrey, is the chain’s 11th branch. The store has 42,000sqft of sales space over two floors and employs 25 staff. A further 10 jobs will be created at its Crawley warehouse. Some £10m has been invested in the store, located on the site of the town’s former fire station. ‘Surrey is the ideal location for Barker & Stonehouse. Thanks to an already thriving community and calendar of local events, we look forward to becoming part of Guildford’s cultural landscape,’ said James Barker, Barker & Stonehouse md.
Trio become AIS members Three retailers have joined buying group AIS, including Bath furniture and flooring retailer TR Hayes. TR Hayes, of which Derek Hayes md, was a co-founder of the Minerva buying group, joined on 1 January, alongside Elphicks of Huntingdon and Guernsey store Scope Interiors. ‘I am extremely pleased that TR Hayes recognise the value that being a part of AIS will bring and are choosing to join us. It is an extremely well established business with a first class reputation with customers and within the industry derived from very strong family values. All the new members share the same strong values associated with quality independent retailers and I am especially pleased that all three showed immediate commitment to AIS exclusive ranges,’ said Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director-home.
Chiefs boost Topps with share purchases Topps Tiles’ ceo and cfo have shown their faith in the chain by buying more than £200,000 of shares despite profits falling. Matthew Williams, ceo, bought 300,000 shares and Rob Parker, cfo, bought 40,000 shares, at 64p a share. Williams then gifted 6,242 shares to each of his three children. Pre-tax profits dropped by £3m to £17m in the year to 30 September. Sales

fell by 1.5% to £211.8m in the year. Like for like sales fell by 2.9%. Gross margin declined from 61.9% to 61.1%. Autumn sales at the floor and wall tile chain improved. ‘The business responded well to the more challenging trading conditions we experienced in 2017, maintaining tight control of costs to help offset the reduction in gross margin and continuing to make good progress with
its strategic initiatives,’ said Williams. In the first eight weeks of the new financial year like for like sales increased by 3.2%. ‘We are confident that the combination of the significant further potential in our strategy of “outspecialising the specialists” with our accelerated plan to grow in the commercial tile market will underpin our future success,’ he added.

Furniture Village warns of challenging conditions The chief executive of Furniture Village has warned that trading conditions will get more challenging in the face of falling wage growth and consumer confidence. ‘The muted GDP growth prospects for the UK, as outlined in the recent Autumn Budget, were a stark reminder of the combined impact of inflationary pressures and an allied reduction in real wage growth on both disposable incomes and business and consumer confidence, these factors are hardly contributing to a buoyant retail market,’ said Peter Harrison. ‘Without doubt, the trading environment is set to become more challenging and, as ever, we must leverage the significant investments made in recent years in stores, online and in our systems to increase productivity and efficiencies, and continue to grow underlying profitability and cash, while remaining true to our ethos of “doing it properly”.’ Despite Harrison’s warning he said the chain had started its current financial year strongly and trading was ahead of expectations. ‘As ever, if the market is to shrink, then we

must and will look to our people in every area of the business to counter this and increase our market share, our unique market positioning facilitating this.’ EBITDA fell by 31% to £6.6m in the year to 2 April during which it opened seven stores and upgraded its online platform. Sales rose by 10% to almost £300m, helped by like for like store and online growth and the new stores.
New owner for The Flooring Show The Flooring Show has been sold to Ocean Media Group. Wendy Adams has owned and organised the show for the past eight years, during which time it has seen a vast resurgence. ‘The Flooring Show is a great event which will benefit from the level of support and knowledge the Ocean Media team can bring to keep it growing and relevant to the industry it serves. I work with OMG currently on their Bridal B2B shows, and I am a shareholder/
director, so I am very confident they will do an excellent job,’ said Adams. Adams and the current team are continuing to work on the 2018 event. ‘OMG will bring in a team over the next few weeks so we can get them up to speed, and ensure everything runs smoothly for post 2018,’ she said. ‘The Flooring Show, with its long heritage in the industry, is well supported by suppliers and retailers and it will be our job to ensure the show
remains relevant and deserving of that support. Ocean Media has a strong history of developing specialist events, and we’re delighted to add The Flooring Show into our portfolio,’ said Tim Willoughby, OMG md. ‘With Wendy and her team remaining in place to work with us on the 2018 show and beyond, we are confident all involved will benefit from this new arrangement and we will deliver a seamless transition over the coming year.’

Laminate’s tale A little care adds years to a product’s life
20
I thought your joints didn’t start creaking and groaning until you got old, but there they go again. They’re swollen and tight, and every movement grinds them together. And it seems worse when there’s damp weather. Being a laminate floor would mean an easy life, the salesman said. I’d click with the others, be well supported, and be able to cope with the job. Occasionally I’d even be swept to keep me in top condition. The reality is rather different. First, there’s the issue of space. There isn’t enough room for us all to spread out. There’s been a lot of pushing and shoving, with some of us breaking up and separating. I’m made of wood, so when the humidity rises I get bigger. It doesn’t have to be pouring with rain in the sitting room, nor flooding out of the bath through the ceiling. Moisture in the air is natural and it changes with the weather (and a few other things). With the right gaps around the room and in all the doorways everything would be fine; but as it is, having a crush on my
colleague has a whole new meaning. Then there’s the floor. It definitely wasn’t as flat as the instructions said, and underlay doesn’t make a floor any flatter. There are a few lumps and bumps that still come through, and there are some hollow areas where I have to pretend I’m a trampoline whenever someone walks over me. That’s not doing my joints any good at all. A £1 coin and a 2m level would have shown the problems within a few seconds if the installer had checked before the installation started. While I’m on the subject of checking, a moisture reading would have helped, too. The floor’s concrete and I’m certain a damp-proof membrane should have been put down. It isn’t only moisture from the floor that worries me. The fitter left without explaining to the customer how I should be looked after. Once a week my already swollen joints are slathered with water when the customer mops me, whether I’m in need of it or not. Each time, for the next couple of hours I can feel my joints
swelling. Then what would be perfectly normal use by a reasonably normal family results in chipping along the swollen joint lines. I must look pretty shabby already. Next door, the floor was checked and made flat with a smoothing compound before the flooring was laid. Expansion gaps were spot on and doorbars were fitted. Cleaning and maintenance were explained before the fitter left. I know because the neighbours were chatting yesterday. ‘We’re getting some more laminate for some other rooms,’ they said. My owners already want to get rid of me and have something else. Minor details can make a major difference. A little bit of care will add years to the life of a product, whether it’s a laminate floor or not, and it’s worth taking the time to get things right. Oh dear, there I go, groaning again. Inspiration is drawn from many individual journeys – Vietnam, California, Portugal, India, Africa, Scandinavia, Thailand and Italy… Ideas are curated into a collection that celebrates both traditional and contemporary techniques, translated into modern designs for the home by its London design studio. Figurative sits alongside abstract. Tech contrasts craft. Luxe meets minimal. Scandi-cool juxtaposes Indian-bright. Visit: www.habitat.co.uk Nadia rattan bed, £550; Tema double duvet set, £120; Chicago cushion, £50; portrait cushion, £40; Nadia rattan bedside table, £95; Terrazzo table lamp, £80; Pinya mug, £6; Fraser rug, £300
COLOUR PALETTE Twenty four colours make up the colour palette for SS18. Key new seasonal introductions include the chalky greens of Sage and Moss moving through to brighter shades of Grass and Leaf. Purple tones of Lilac and Plum make an elegant statement alongside Raspberry, a new warm, chalky pink. At the brighter end of the spectrum, Daffodil yellow and Satsuma orange nod towards brighter summer days ahead.
Avery chair, £75; Vida rug, £300
RATTAN A favourite material of the design studio due to its flexibility at creating fluid 3D forms, Indonesian rattan has been chosen as the base material for bedroom, living and lighting. Moving away from it being perceived as a ‘glasshouse’ material, designer Matthew Long introduces Habitat’s first hand-made rattan bedroom range – Nadia – and the new Feliz and Avery dining chairs with a nod back to some of Habitat’s original rattan designs from the 1960s.

GLAM LUXE Advances in sourcing and technology and more sophisticated, high-end materials and finishes can be brought to the high street. Walnut, golds, blacks, marbles and brass are combined for a premium look that continues to evolve a reimagining of affordable, modern luxe.
FIGURATIVE Inspired by art of the 1950s and 1960s, the human form has been reinterpreted across a series of textiles and ceramics designed by Martha Coates. Deconstructed facial components are reassembled in abstract ways alongside light-hearted ceramics that make a nod to the monumental Moai of Easter Island. RETAIL SWEET LA Understated 1970s Malibu glamour with a luxe, mismatched feel. Unvarnished woods sit alongside contemporary reworks of rattan and richly textured textiles and ceramics, a monochrome base interspersed with bold accents of yellow and orange. Mixed alongside tan leathers, sheepskin rugs and hand-crafted pottery, this look conjures up cool open plan Californian style. LIGHTING Continuing his series of statement lighting for Habitat, Aaron Probyn presents two contemporary designs that highlight LED technology. The Hutton LED tube light is a sculptural statement piece to sit above a dining table. Its delicate, dimmable lighting tubes give a feeling of being suspended and balanced in space. Harman was developed for small space living, its articulating lamp heads allowing light to be directed for reading but also to bounce light off Austin table, £595; Austin bench, £395; Talia chair, £95; Moxley celing light, £120; Marchan rug, £350
the walls to create ambient and atmospheric light. Natural lighting is a move away from the precision of metal and glass and precisely engineered shapes – which largely typify the existing lighting collection – to something softer using spun bamboo and rattan. Each piece is hand-made in Vietnam requiring considerable skill and dexterity by the craftsmen. Rattan is a renewable resource that can be woven to give generous curvy shapes. Light shines through gaps between the rattan to give amazing effects.
Lustre vase, £30; Ripple vase, £30; Brillante vase, £30; Perle vase, £25
LUSTRE Iridescent finishes – reminiscent of oil on water – make up this micro-trend story within decorative accessories. A look translated from the fashion industry, shimmering, light-changing finishes add visual intrigue to pieces across a range of different forms from fluid to more structural in shape.
SUMMER SCANDI A cool colour palette of washed greys, pinks, whites and light woods underpin a calm Scandinavian inspired story. Standing in obvious contrast to the louder colour stories in the collection, this muted Scandinavian look combines textured textiles, natural stoneware and white accessories for an airy, minimalist look.

MAXIMALIST ‘We’ve paired jungle prints with deco design to create a glorious fusion of pattern and bold colour. Warm metallics pair wonderfully with moody hues like navy and aubergine, and velvety textures really do have year-round appeal. Confidence is key to creating this dramatic look – wall to wall print optional, of course,’ says Lois Vincent, House of Fraser home designer.

‘I love tropical prints – there’s really no better way to create that summer party mood – and this season there are some brilliantly bold ones to choose from. Palm motifs are always popular and our in-house design team has scaled them up to create some really striking abstract prints. Pick out vibrant pinks and blues and you’ve created a tropical paradise in your back garden’, says Pay.

ORGANIC BEAUTY
RJR John Rocha puts a fresh spin on his signature artisan craftsmanship style. The collection sees the introduction of delicate watercolour florals on crisp white ceramics and botanical appliqué bedlinens. The seasonal colour palette is brought to life in the form of beautiful embossed and crocheted textiles in shades of sage and sherbet. Earthenware vases in soft pastels lend a natural, organic undertone to the range, bringing together a beautiful combination of simple, organic textures and calm ethereal beauty.
TROPICAL PARADISE
The eclectic MW by Matthew Williamson combines opulent contrasting prints and rich sumptuous texture, underpinned by dramatic jewel tones for a glamorous take on the tropical bohemian look. The Monkey is replaced by the Birds of Paradise as the character of the summer season, appearing on bright contrasting bedlinens and vibrant wall art. A strong sense of fun and extravagance runs throughout the range. Flamingo candle holders, gold embellished pineapple cushions and colour pop jewellery boxes are simple yet effective additions to add an element of tropical luxury to any room.
DECORATION
Watercolour pastel toned bedding, sweet tea party pieces and clean, bold lighting make up Debenhams’ latest homewear offering, Cosmo. Splashes of baby pink and muted blue, complemented with flecks of glamorous gold markings, fun pom-pom details and rich mohair textures bring to life a design-led collection of decorative accessories, textiles and bathroom designs. Lighting is abstract, combining interesting shapes and soft pastels. Layer together for a real pop of character or introduce individually for a more grown up touch of luxe.

RETAIL MARITIMELESSNESS
The style influence of the Debenhams’ Hastings collection is a modern take on traditional nautical design with a fresh, contemporary twist. This collection offers subtle, current updates for every room in the home. Seasonal dining is given an artisan feel with the introduction of abstract printed picnicware, natural, rustic kitchen pieces and statement glass accessories. Classic printed textiles and traditional glass lanterns receive a touch of character with water weathered glass and natural textured jute. The modern maritime theme breathes fresh life throughout the home for the season.
CATWALK’S IN
The J by Jasper Conran collection combines contemporary design with statement colour for refined, modern luxury. Rich velvets and asymmetric prints in golden hues and classic deep navy appear throughout the home in the form of luxurious bedlinens, cushions and throws. Marble and copper kitchen pieces offer an understated update to dining. The lighting range is also extended for the new season with the introduction of the deep wooden Nordic influenced pendant and retro look table lamp. The fresh palette and new materials bring the designer’s strikingly bold, catwalk inspired collection into the new season in a subtle yet impactful fashion.
OPULENT
Star by Julien Macdonald returns bursting with all of the decadent glamour and high fashion opulence the designer is known for. Shimmering metallic accessories and intricately beaded cushions bring an effortless touch of opulence to any room. Textiles are given a fresh revival with buttery-yellow and silver roses for a new direction on the designer’s signature boudoir look. Intricate ruffles and feather finishes add a further feel of luxury to the collection, bringing a refreshing update to the home for the new season.

BY THE SEASIDE
Abigail Ahern has brought her uniquely creative touch to a new range of nautical inspired homeware for the Abigail Ahern/Edition range. Drawing on her inspiration from around the world, the collection receives a seasonal update with the introduction of a variety of new characters. Forest green puffin lamps and pom-pom cushions, unexpected metallic whale planters and unique sea urchin vases continue the unmistakeably quirky, striking look the range has become synonymous with. Ahern’s faux botanicals also make a return for the new season, complementing the mainline collection. The range exudes exotic nautical vibes with a hint of ethnic glamour for the new season.

CARPET
Communication channel The Carpet Foundation uses social media and print to keep people informed about the carpet industry The Carpet Foundation has returned to paid consumer marketing after a gap of at least five years. In that period it relied on, and was successful at, being the first port of call for consumer journalists writing about carpet. ‘We have been doing an awful lot of PR but the magazine market is changing dramatically as their ability to write articles on carpet is getting harder as there are less staff. So we’ve turned to advertorials,’ says Andrew Stanbridge, CF chief executive. ‘We’ve been going for nearly 20 years, you could say one of our greatest achievements is still to be here, another is getting consumer magazines to write about carpets: 20 years ago they wouldn’t. We’ll continue with advertorials tackling issues we get asked about a lot, for example asthma, underfloor heating and air quality: these are consumer based topics that no individual manufacturer would try to tackle. We’ll be talking about things others won’t.’ It is three years since CF restructured and changed its funding model. ‘We were never in real financial trouble, we always had money in the bank, it was more of a question of was there the support to carry on with

Interiors Monthly January 2018
reduced resources, and there was. The changes have enabled us to now use some of our funding for the advertorials,’ he explains. While membership has fallen from 1,000 to 450, Stanbridge is quick to point out that under the previous levy system ‘a good percentage never paid anything or practically very little. Now the £35 monthly fee is bringing in 10%-15% more money, but the manufacturer money has been reduced drastically. The whole finance was switched from manufacturer to retailer. ‘Some retailers saw their brand in their
town as something they wanted to support without the need to support a nationwide body. After all, it’s their money. Membership is static. We might get 10-12 new members in and the same number go out: usually they are retiring, closing the shop or have gone out of business. We’ve been attending buying group meetings and have had success there. We’ll never have 1,000s of members. We have 450, I want to get to 500,’ he says. Stanbridge reveals that arbitration between shoppers and retailers takes up 30% of CF’s time. Because of this it is working with Trading Standards to
become a recognised alternative dispute resolution body. ‘We want to carry on marketing to the end user and being a one stop shop for journalists to write about carpet: many retailers will perhaps not know this but we probably get two or three calls or emails from consumers, manufacturers or retailers a day asking for help,’ he says. Retailers are probably also unaware that David Whitefoot, CF technical consultant, is usually the only UK representative at EU and global standards meetings: without him the UK would not be represented. CF has been successful in using social media to communicate with consumers and its website channels to members. ‘I don’t see the way carpet is made or sold, and consumers’ reaction to it, changing very much. The independent retailer has survived. Our role is to keep up with communication channels. We drive consumers to the membership via the website. While I can’t say a shopper going from the CF website to a members’ website guarantees a sale, it is generating footfall,’ says Stanbridge. ‘We’ve been going for nearly 20 years and we’re going to carry on until the industry says: “We don’t need you any more”. The industry set us up and finances us: we are here for the independent retailer.’ Visit: www.carpetfoundation.com

Relaxation techniques La-Z-Boy UK will introduce 18 new products Following the success of its high street exclusive Originals Collection, La-Z-Boy UK is preparing to release a host of new ranges and products at the January Furniture Show. With its largest ever stand it will showcase 11 new roomsets plus a gallery of seven chairs. The stand’s theme will tie in with a national advertising campaign, which has already launched in the press and will begin on TV, including Channel 4 and Sky, from early February. The campaign makes it the manufacturer with the highest

current spend for consumer advertising. There are new models in both its Originals Collection and traditional Comfort Studio collection. While in keeping with the popularity of the ranges, the designs will introduce distinctive design features and styling. A contemporary range for city living – Urban Attitudes – will also be unveiled. It has the look of a static range with wood or chrome legs, but features concealed motion mechanisms. Bright, modern designs and exclusive new fabric and leather swatches, with bold patterns, textures and colourways are featured. Keith Wilson, La-Z-Boy UK md, says the team is looking forward to welcoming customers at the show. ‘We’ll be showcasing our most impressive stand to date, which will be the culmination of a year of hard work and planning. It’s also great timing for us, just a couple of weeks before our TV advertising campaign is set to launch. Visitors to the stand will be able to get a real taste of the theme of the campaign, which focuses on creating a sense of everything that the brand stands for, as well as highlighting key product features,’ he says. Collection and various characters who each have their own reasons for loving their La-Z-Boy products, including comfort, durability, style and ease of relaxation. ‘We’re expecting a fantastic response from the campaign, which will form a fantastic foundation for the introduction of our new models into stores later in 2018. This will be our first ever standalone campaign in this territory, which makes it a very exciting time for the brand, and for our retailers,’ says Dave Darragh, La-Z-Boy UK sales director. He says this year’s larger stand gives it more scope, showcasing products in three collections. ‘The Originals Collection and Comfort Studio Collection products fit perfectly with the other models in the ranges, but develop the look and feel to incorporate the latest styling and detailing. We are really proud of how the finished products look. Our new Urban Attitudes collection is a stunning range of products, which offer something totally unique to the UK market. Their modern aesthetic goes in a brand new direction and consumers will love being able to enjoy a full reclining mechanism in a smaller chair with legs.’ A seven-piece chair gallery will also be launched. ‘La-Z-Boy is renowned for its individual recliners and this gives retailers more flexibility to offer customers a product to suit their needs and taste,’ adds Darragh. Later in the year it will introduce a cabinet range, bed and mattress. Email: dave.darragh@la-z-boy.co.uk.

Cushion stars More retailers and manufacturers want Encore products
Demand for Encore cushions dramatically increased last year. ‘More and more retailers are seeing the advantages and are demanding cushions containing Encore for their ranges. Such has been the demand that we installed new CNC machines and took on extra staff to cope. Since its launch in 2010 Encore has gone from strength to strength. It’s easy to see why,’ says Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md. ‘The Encore cushion range retains the
casual look, and its resistance to sagging along with easier maintenance gives retailers confidence in the performance of fibre and feather, and now spring, in seat cushion applications.’ Encore Fibre is a cushion that looks and feels like fibre but has the recovery of foam. Encore Feather looks and feels like feather but also has the recovery performance of foam. ‘The latest addition to the Encore range is Springcore, where small ‚‚‚

pocket springs are inserted into a shaped foam core. For the first time a spring, foam cushion can now be made in almost any shape or size. This is a big advantage over conventional spring cushions,’ says Prudhoe. Encore Fibre has been awarded the FIRA Gold mark and was the top performing fibre cushion in its tests. ‘As well as the standard Encore range we have developed a number of unique combination cushions for various manufacturers. This gives the manufacturer a very personal cushion feel, making the sit different to their competitors,’ he says. Over the past 15 years Fibreline has positioned itself as a one stop shop for upholstery manufacturers’ filling requirements, with foam, fibre and feather cushion products made on one site and delivered by its own vehicles. ‘It’s a winning formula with our range of combined filling cushion products being incredibly popular. With increasing demand for value added products such as the Encore cushion range, and the ever-shortening lead times, in-house control of the sewn case production is essential for meeting customer demand,’ adds Prudhoe. Established in 1982 Fibreline was one of the first companies to manufacture carded fibre cushions for the UK upholstery market. It is now a leading supplier of not only polyester fibre, but also feather, foam, and now spring cushions. As a manufacturer of all three fillings it has been at the leading edge of developing a range of combination fillings for designers trying to offer something different to the norm. PROTECTION
Customer commitment Castelan is embracing the latest EU legislation ‘During the past year, Castelan Group has continued to develop its systems and products to provide an exceptional care and protection package that has led to us welcoming several new clients, with whom we are delighted to be a trusted partner. Other planned developments to enhance the journey for both our clients and customers will be coming on stream in the coming year and we look forward to introducing them as they happen,’ says Martin Napper, Castelan Group ceo. Castelan Group has vision and mission statements that underpin the business and guide all that it does. The vision statement is: ‘To be recognised experts in providing innovative insurance and product service solutions within the retail sector’. The mission statement is: ‘To provide world class customer care and innovative tailored solutions in the product protection and insurance industry’. The coming year will see changes in the way furniture warranties are offered, at the point of sale, with the implementation of the Insurance Distribution Directive. This EU legislation can be easily adhered to with the right support from a warranty provider. It is not designed to prevent sales but rather to ensure the customer has all the information they need to make an informed decision before buying. This promotes better customer commitment and ensures the customer’s expectations of the protection plan match its features and benefits.
Castelan Group has developed its systems and products
‘This will be a key component of the sales process and equally as important as having the best products and plans on hand to offer to the customer,’ he says. ‘Castelan Group stands ready to continue to support our clients in ensuring that we provide furniture protection plans that deliver sectorleading levels of care to your customer, add value to your service provision and are sold compliantly at the point of sale. We look forward to working with our current and future clients in 2018, and beyond, to deliver the best levels of service and support in the industry,’ adds Napper. Visit: www.castelangroup.com

RUGS
Scales of notation Huge rugs are on the horizon for Deidre Dyson Deirdre Dyson has conjured up designs that will be hand-knotted on a large scale for her Horizons collection. The 7m x 2.35m Seascape depicts the colours of the sea, from its depth to its shallows, with flashes of light reflected on the water’s surface. Skyscape (5m x 2.35m) illustrates the
colours of cool skies with a glimmer of silken sunlight shining through. ‘As a painter, my primary focus is on colour – it provides both depth and atmosphere. I give the same attention to colour in my rug designs and for my new collection, I concentrate on the changeovers from one shade to another, as seen in the world around us – the sea, the sky – and how they transform throughout the day,’ explains Dyson. Her Dusk design represents the colours and energy of the heat in the sky, as the sun sets at dusk, with vivid reds and pinks, melting into purples and blues. ‘Part of the impact of looking at the sky and the sea is their scale – so I wanted to represent them as truly as possible by creating rugs on a large scale. My amazing team in Nepal are handknotting the two huge rugs on a single loom, which is quite extraordinary.’ Dyson uses colour grading techniques and a combination of Chinese silk and Tibetan wool to reflect the textures and varying light found in nature. Each design is bespoke and can be fitted or free-standing. Customers can take inspiration from her ideas, but apply their personal touch through colour, shape, size and design elements. Rugs can be hand-knotted in Tibet or handtufted in Scotland or Yorkshire in New Zealand wool. Horizons will be debuted at Maison & Objet this month. Visit: www.deirdredyson.com

Checking into the UK Hästens is expanding its presence in this country Since 1852, Hästens has been committed to crafting the best sleep in the world. The craftsmen at the factory in Köping, Sweden, have been refining their craft for generations. Every bed is bespoke and hand-made using only the best natural materials including pure flax, cotton, wool, the highest quality Swedish pine and hypoallergenic horse hair. With operations in 37 countries and more than 200 partners in Europe, Asia and the USA, the small family-owned company has grown into a global producer and retailer of premium beds. ‘Hästens has five generations of product development and handcraftsmanship experience. Our roots are in Köping, where it all began, where we remain today, and where our beds are still made, no matter if the customer lives just down the street or on the other side of the world. Every day we continue our legacy, following the passion in our hearts: the hand-made craftsmanship of creating the best bed to provide the perfect sleep,’ says Oliver Bowen, Hästens UK manager. ‘We are, as far as we know, the oldest manufacturer of high quality beds still in business. For over 160 years we have developed our beds to become more comfortable and of a higher quality. It is a never ending process. Our research and development projects are all centred around the idea of making us a little better with each step. We never compromise on quality when it comes to materials and construction.’ Last year Hästens announced a design collaboration with Swedish designers Bernadotte & Kylberg in which the Hästens signature blue check was completely reimagined, with the new Appaloosa and Marwari beds, both of which use the construction of the Hästens 2000T bed. This collaboration, announced at Salone del Mobile Milan 2017, marks the first time that the Hästens’ iconic blue check has been reinterpreted Recently Hästens opened two partner stores within Wells Bedding and Interiors in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and JJ Pierson

Mattress-now 3 Zone
Mirapocket 1200 mattress
Studio by Silentnight medium comfort
Scoring a hat-trick Silentnight has three Which? Best Buys If you look closely at many football team’s crests some of them have stars above them. Aberdeen FC, for example, has two representing the two European trophies it has won. But when it comes to mattresses think Which? rather than EUFA. Silentnight is a top scorer as the only bed brand with three Which? Best Buy mattresses. The Mirapocket 1200 mattress is one of its bestsellers. Featuring natural materials engineered from sustainable sources, the Eco Comfort layer is fully recyclable and highly breathable, allowing air to pass through for an invigorating and refreshing night’s sleep. Fibres have been constructed vertically to offer extra support and help free movement

through the night. Which? describes the mattress as ‘one of the best value mattresses we’ve ever tested’. Studio by Silentnight medium comfort is the most recent addition to the awarded products. Designed with simplicity in mind, Studio by Silentnight offers customers one mattress in three comfort choices. The mattress is delivered rolled and boxed. Once the packaging has been removed and the mattress left to settle for 24 hours in a well ventilated room for optimum freshness and flatness, then it’s ready to use. Which? says it is ‘the topscoring bed-in-a-box mattress’ and ‘one of the best mattresses we’ve tested in years and fully deserving of our coveted Best Buy recommendation.’
Silentnight’s Mattress-now 3 Zone has been a Which? Best Buy since 2012. The mattress contains a comfort layer of body moulding memory foam and provides support for the entire body, with soft support for shoulders and firm support for hips and lower back, providing a healthier sleep. The Miratex foam core provides support right to the edge of the mattress, meaning more sleep space, while a soft knit cover offers added comfort. This mattress also comes in a box: vacuum packed and rolled for extra convenience. ‘You can rely on this memory-foam mattress to provide good support for your body for years to come,’ says Which?. MiChair Gold Collection’s Sasha
Still moving with the times This year marks Furmanac’s 50th anniversary Furmanac is about to celebrate its 50th anniversary. The UK’s largest adjustable bed manufacturer and a leader in upholstered beds and reclining chairs, was established by Reginald Hilliard in 1968 and is still family run and owned. Starting as a furniture component supplier, it developed an adjustable Care bed in 1987. In 1997, John Hilliard, then md and now chairman, developed and manufactured its first electric adjustable bed before introducing the MiBed brand, which now makes up 60% of the adjustable bed market. Prior to taking on the role of md, Buzz Pattar worked closely with his predecessor as production director. ‘The business was growing more and more. In 2008 turnover was around £4.5m-£5m. However, it looked like we were at a standstill and growth was not where we wanted it to be,’ he says. The solution was diversification. ‘We realised we had the skill to make a more premium form of bedding and that was when we introduced the Hestia brand for independent retailers in 2009.’ It was in 2012 that the direction the company truly wanted to take was decided. ‘At the time we were both a
76
Interiors Monthly January 2018
manufacturer and a distributor of sofabed and chair mechanisms. We had learnt a lot about chair mechanisms, including their construction and upholstery, and realised we should be concentrating on the finished product,’ explains Pattar. Thus the MiChair range was created. By refocusing on manufacturing upholstery, its skill and expertise grew, leading to the introduction of the Hestia upholstered bedframes in 2014, a collection of frames varying in style and design. By 2015, the Hestia brand was increased further to include a premium collection of adjustable beds that were clearly and deliberately different from the adjustable models Furmanac was chiefly known for. ‘When we launched the Hestia Motion collection we didn’t want people to think of it as an electric bed associated with the mobility market. For example, the Salisbury is more of a lifestyle product. It’s commonly bought by two people sharing one mattress who want to relax in bed, reading or watching TV, and the bed can even be controlled through a smartphone,’ says Pattar. While the Furmanac team reflect on past achievements, its 50th anniversary
also gives confidence towards building the future. ‘It is easy to get caught up with what is happening right now and with Brexit as a factor in terms of uncertainty. But what we can do is focus on what we are good at and this is what our customers want us to do: make a great product. We are very much looking forward to the January Furniture Show with all our brands, as we consider it an important date in the diary after 20 years showing at the NEC.’ The MiBed collection of adjustable beds will include the latest collection of GelAir mattresses featuring bounce back, breathability and active response to the body while sleeping. The seven upholstered bedframes offer a variety of styles, from the more modest to grand, sleigh designs with 4,000 count pocket sprung platforms. Displayed on the new frames will be the new Nature’s Comfort natural tufted mattress collection that features layers of wool, silk, cashgora and cotton. Lift and recline chairs and sofas from MiChair will also be on display with new leather and fabric designs, which are all available in either single/dual, manual, power and static options for complete versatility. Higher and higher The hybrid mattress has been taken to a new level
Hybed Ultimate mattress with Albert headboard in Steel fabric
One of Great Britain’s most established and innovative bed makers, Harrison Spinks, enhanced its luxury mattress offering by launching two collections at the Bed Show 2017. One of the ranges – the Hybed collection – offers consumers the ‘ultimate in sleeping experiences by taking the “hybrid” mattress concept to the next level,’ says Simon Spinks, Harrison Spinks md. While a traditional hybrid mattress combines memory foam and springs, the Hybed mattresses feature world-leading pocket spring technology, latex, memory foam and a 100% natural sleeping surface. This results in one of the most advanced hybrid sleep systems available, according to the company. The collection is made up of nine beds across three ranges – Super, Nature and
Ultimate – providing a bed for all sleeping requirements. Some of the natural fibres used, including wool, are grown on Harrison Spinks’ 300acre farm in Yorkshire. These mattress fillings are complemented by up to 14,000 individual pocket springs, which work both independently and in partnership with one another to offer elevated levels of support and comfort. ‘The launch of our new Hybed collection has been inspired by our continuous innovation, mission to become more vertically integrated, and our goal to change the way the world sleeps through support, comfort and luxury,’ says Spinks. ‘By offering the trade an exclusive look at the collection at the Bed Show, we were able to speak at length with a number of retailers interested in this

concept – the feedback was really positive.’ Launched alongside the Hybed collection was the adjustable sleep system from Harrison Spinks’ Somnus brand. The sleep system can be adapted to suit different relaxing and sleeping positions thanks to two recliner mattress options. Somnus also displayed its limited edition Royal Britannia mattress – created to celebrate 65 years since Somnus supplied the royal yacht with mattresses ahead of its maiden voyage. The Royal Britannia model features 10,000 Somnus Sensa Intelligent pocket springs, along with the finest natural fillings including Wensleydale Eco wool. The wool is sourced from Harrison Spinks’ flock of rare Wensleydale sheep. Visit: www.harrisonspinks.co.uk

There are five Seal mattresses in the collection
Slumberland says it has enjoyed exceptionally strong demand for its Vintage Collection since the range’s official launch at the NBF Bed Show in September. Drawing on the company’s heritage and on a mission to improve the way we sleep, Slumberland has reintroduced an updated version of the popular Seal Beds into the collection. The company invests heavily in sleep technology and product development, manufacturing all its own products in the UK, at its factory in Huntingdon. And this collection is no exception, showcasing the latest sleep and comfort technologies, combined with striking new mattress fabric designs that have been extremely well received by

retailers and end customers alike. In line with the brand’s consistent commitment to innovation, the five new Seal mattresses in the collection boast pioneering support layers. These include: Pocketed Posture Springing for maximum responsive support, Posture Flex for exceptional comfort and pressure relief, Rheia foam to deliver four times more airflow than standard foam and EdgeMax designed to maximise the sleeping surface area. Platinum and Gold Seal are the top two models featuring temperature regulating Gel Latex, natural wool, Tencel, silk, bamboo and alpaca fibres for those wanting premium levels of comfort. The middle Silver and Bronze Seal
models feature wool, cashmere and silk for a cosseting sleep environment. While the entry level Copper Seal model features Cool Cotton for those wanting a cooler sleep plus value for money. A customer focused approach of supporting its retail partners with a range of sales and marketing initiatives and customer support has helped Slumberland build a strong store presence with both new and existing retailers. Working hard to offer its customers high quality sleep solutions at competitive price points, the Vintage Collection has successfully delivered sales growth not only for Slumberland but for its retail customers too. BEDS AND BEDROOM Octaspring’s central hole allows humid air to pass through
Springing into action Dormeo will bring customisation to its Octaspring offer Dormeo is celebrating not only its 15th anniversary, but looking ahead to some exciting product launches for 2018. Building on the success of its exclusive Octaspring range, it will be bringing this technology to the homes of more customers by introducing Octaspring into a wider range of sleep products. Octaspring is a hybrid invention, where each foam spring features eight reinforcements, a series of air vents and a hole in the centre that allows humid air to pass through and away, resulting in a sleep surface that is eight times more breathable than memory foam. The S-Plus will be the first truly customisable Octaspring mattress where levels of support and firmness can be chosen. Perfect for couples with different sleeping preferences, the S-Plus is inspired by the natural S-shaped layer of Octaspring at the heart of the mattress. Dormeo’s promotion of health and wellbeing includes fabric treatments to help allergy sufferers: aloe vera for a naturally smooth touch, green tea to help keep your batteries charged at night, and clean effect for extra protection against dust mites. Traditional meets modern Established manufacturing techniques combined with 21st century materials Siesta Beds was established in 1986 by directors Zaffar and Irshad Baig. Now Zaffar’s son Abbas Zaffar and Irshad’s son Bilal Baig have become joint sales and product development managers, taking increased joint responsibility of the day to day control of the company’s Mulliners Works in Bordesley Green, Birmingham. Mulliners Works is one of the city’s historical industrial sites, recognised for coach building in the 19th century and in the 20th century this included body building for Rolls-Royce and Daimler. Siesta uses traditional bed manufacturing techniques, along with
embracing modern materials where the advantages to improve the comfort and longevity of the product is clear. More traditional natural materials still have a wide appeal such as wool, silk, cotton and bamboo, a sustainable fibre as soft as wool or silk that has many features and benefits. With the need for renewable resources bamboo’s appeal has increased with the use in leisurewear and bedlinen increasing annually. Siesta Beds has seven collections: Superior Edge to Edge Encapsulated, Cool Tech memory foam, Winter Summer side, Natural collection, Orthopaedic

Super storage
EasyStore has the volume of four standard drawers and storage can be on one or both sides of the bed
Hypnos’ single drawer can hold up to 60kg
A new bed is an important long-term investment. Alongside the comfort of the mattress, smart customers look for a divan base that ensures the right level of support and is in keeping with their interior design, but also provides the right storage solution. Hypnos’ large EasyStore drawer fits the bill. It has an abundance of accessible space, with a single EasyStore drawer boasting the equivalent volume of four standard Hypnos divan drawers and 60kg of weight. Providing a practical way of maximising space under the bed, the drawer is ideal for items that need to be accessed regularly. But it is also suitable
88

for bulky items as the drawer makes full use of the divan length and height. The divan base is available with drawers both sides as standard, but can also be ordered with only one drawer, giving the option to have a storage area on one or both sides of the bed. ‘We have a strong reputation for excellence within the luxury bed market, which is why we are constantly innovating to bring the very best, most stylish and versatile products into the industry. While comfort in the bedroom is key, storage is also an extremely important aspect for our customers,’ says Amanda Castle, Hypnos marketing manager.
‘The EasyStore is practical, storagesmart and space effective. It offers users a range of solutions with its fullyopening drawer, accommodating up to three times the weight of a standard sized divan drawer and four times the capacity: that’s a lot of pairs of shoes. ‘Our comprehensive range of divan storage options ensures that consumers have a solution that suits their individual lifestyle and comfort needs. The space under a bed is huge with lots of potential, and Hypnos makes sure it’s used efficiently, maximising the space allowed through the EasyStore,’ adds Castle. Visit: www.hypnosbeds.com

Art of upholstery Vale Bridgecraft is returning to the NEC Vale Bridgecraft, with more than 100 years in the upholstery industry, is showcasing its latest ranges of contemporary, classic and traditional sofas and chairs. Operating from West Yorkshire, it provides luxury sofas and chairs, starting with the rough-hewn timber to create a frame, right through to the upholstery using many exclusive fabrics and fillings. The company supports most of the UK’s independent retailers and has eight show centres displaying its extensive product ranges. Unusually for a manufacturer, it also boosts awareness for its brand with national consumer advertising support and has just invested in a new website complete with a dynamic visualisation tool that will help retailers and consumers create their perfect Vale Bridgecraft upholstery. Its small, experienced team has a passion for the art of upholstery and is determined to maintain its high standards: not only with its furniture, but also with the support it offers retailers. Its unique, vertically integrated model, combining manufacturing and retail supply, supported by the show centres, can be confusing to some. But those of its partners who embrace the process find it financially beneficial, easy and pleasurable to manage. The customer support team in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire, works alongside its manufacturing team, micro-managing each order on its journey through to delivery. With the average time served by staff being at least 15 years – and some a lot more – everyone who deals with its processes and stockists has a huge depth of upholstery knowledge and can offer advice. Vale Bridgecraft believes a chat over the phone giving friendly advice rather than a stream of emails, is a more enjoyable and productive way of working with its customers. The company aims to continue to invest in its people, its products, and its business relationships, making sure that it supplies the best product in the best, most efficient way. Highgrove Beds Group is an established and ambitious bed manufacturer that has made the industry take notice over the past few years thanks to its multimillion pound investment in production and rapid sales growth. It returns to the show to launch its latest collections and several trade and consumer focused innovations. In 2017 Highgrove celebrated its 15th anniversary in the UK and was a runnerup at the Bed Show Awards in the £10m or more turnover Bed Manufacturer of the Year category. The group has three distinctly different brands in its stable specifically targeting consumer groups with its good, better, best approach. ‘Moresleep is our entry-level collection that has already made a high impact since its introduction to the market in 2016 by focusing on providing stockists with a wide range of excellent value for money mattress specifications,’ says Shane Harding, Highgrove head of marketing. ‘Highgrove uses the finest materials and components throughout the extensive range, including German engineered pocket spring systems; luxury natural fibres such as cashmere, silk and wool; latex, gel, Ergo Sense soft foam and memory technology; and all available in an almost infinite range of size and storage options.’ This is supported by its seven day Faster Sleep delivery service and extensive retailer POS support package. ‘Sanctum is an exciting new brand targeted at the premium end of the market and featuring a wide range of luxury pocket sprung beds crafted by expert hands right here in the UK,’ says Harding. ‘The hand side-stitched mattresses benefit from the very finest natural materials, including Platinum standard British wool, silk, mohair and cashmere. An extensive range of luxurious base options in stylish covers, including enhanced drawers, are also available, along with a range of stylish headboards. ‘A stunning in-store POS package is provided free of charge to stockists committing to a minimum of a three-bed display while consumers can take confidence from Sanctum’s 10-year warranty,’ adds Harding. Mega launch Milano console table and mirror
The start of the year is always an exciting time for Gallery Direct, and this year is no exception with the launch of 353 products. There are 16 furniture collections featuring bedroom, dining and occasional ranges. A selection of mirrors, accessories and soft furnishings have also been introduced along with a new product category: rugs. With its catalogue now boasting around 1,550 items, Gallery has produced two design directories, Furniture and Décor, to showcase its products. Both include some ‘get the look’ features for the ranges, to give customers ideas on how to display the products to their best advantage. ‘As well as offering our customers affordable, design-led, value-engineered products, we are keen to help and inspire them with their displays. Our lifestyle images help to show customers how to put together looks, but we wanted to go further, so we introduced the ‘get the look’ features. These are designed to inspire retailers on how to group
Gallery Direct will debut more than 350 products products together to help increase sales, whether it’s a full roomset or a small capsule look,’ says James Hudson, Gallery sales and business development director. The latest furniture collections offer a large variety to suit different tastes and styles of interior, and complement Gallery’s current offering. The main ranges include Boho Boutique and Boho Retreat which feature a patterned frieze of blind fretwork to give a hint of ethnic design. In contrast, Bronte offers classic dining and occasional furniture with a twist. It is available in two finishes, deep blue Storm and subtle Taupe. For a more industrial feel there is Foundry, with its solid oak tops and hand-brushed bronzed metal legs. Cookham is a range of updated farmhouse dining furniture designed to sit in an informal family house setting. It is available in two finishes, Smoky Oak, which shows the natural grain of the wood, and painted Slate Grey with Smoky Oak tops.

Contemporary collection Milano features an inlaid chevron design and is made using European oak and rustic oak structured veneers. For an architectural look Brixton, with its strong, true lines, is striking. It is made from solid European rustic graded oak, which is known for its unique character, and the tops are burnished resin, which resembles polished stone, with a metallic bronze hue. The Camden collection is made using Acacia wood solids and veneers, and offers an easy loft living style. It has a relaxed feel with undulating sections of inlaid Acacia; the variance of grain and cross sawn detail give character. To complement the new furniture a wide choice of mirrors, home accessories and soft furnishings have also been launched. Again, the selection on offer ensures there is something to suit different tastes and styles, with 29 mirrors, over 120 accessories and more than 60 textiles, plus rugs. A sale event at Spalding, Lincolnshire attracted crowds
Sales engineering A well organised sale event can bring benefits reckons Greenwood Retail If something seems too good to be true, it probably is – but not always. ‘How would it be if, as a retailer, you could generate a huge sales bonanza in your business at a time to suit you, even during the current economic and political uncertainty?’ asks Bernard Eaton, Greenwood Retail md. ‘Would that be all right? The concept is certainly all right with the retailers who are recording massive results right now using a Greenwood Promotion Plan to optimise their winter sales.’ Greenwood Retail was founded in 2002 with one simple intention: ‘to offer the best possible marketing service available to the British retailer,’ says Eaton. Since then it has sold £250m of goods from nearly 1,000 sales events for UK and Republic of Ireland retailers. ‘Greenwood has far more experience of planning and organising retail sales in this marketplace than any other sales company. This means that no one else is better qualified to help British and

‘I sincerely believe that the winners in business are the ones who get up and do something to make sales, rather than just waiting for them to come in through the door’
The target is to generate 25% to 50% of a store’s annual sales during a three-week sale
Republic of Ireland retailers get the best out of their next sales event,’ he says. ‘We all thought there was no way we’d achieve the sales projections given to us by Greenwood but, in the end we smashed all previous records with takings equal to 80% of our annual turnover in just two and a half weeks,’ says Tim Halfhide, owner of Bringy Furniture in Great Baddow, Essex. ‘The event manager they sent was straight out of the John Lewis mould – just right for us. This was by far the best and most professional sales experience we’ve ever had.’ Eaton says: ‘A Greenwood high-impact sales event is created using a special marketing formula. When all of the components of that formula are applied precisely, something quite remarkable occurs. Something greater than the sum of the parts: an accelerated buying environment is created in the store, which must be seen to be believed and understood.’
The challenge is then to sustain that special environment over an agreed number of weeks, which varies, depending on the nature of the sales event and the season. Typically, Greenwood aims to generate 25% to 50% of a store’s annual sales during a three-week sale; although it has achieved sales in excess of 100% on many occasions. ‘From experience gathered over the years, I can recommend, for the vast majority of retailers, that it’s safe to hold a Greenwood sales event about once a year as a maximum frequency, without seeing diminishing results,’ says Eaton. Dorset retailer Sturtons & Tappers has held annual Greenwood sales events over many years. ‘Sale number eight smashed the last six sales. And this time it was good to see a younger group of customers coming through the doors – no doubt due to the increased level of digital and social media marketing being deployed in the
overall marketing plan,’ says Philip Heath, Sturtons & Tappers director. According to Eaton, the most frequently asked question is ‘when is the best time to hold a sales event?’ ‘This is, without doubt, when your market is naturally at its most active. Quite simply, the more seasonally active your market is, the more you can potentially sell. I always recommend that you should promote with the tide of the market rather than against it. ‘When it comes to running a retail business, I have always believed in a proactive approach to sales rather than a passive one. I sincerely believe that the winners in business are the ones who get up and do something to make sales, rather than just waiting for them to come in through the door. I never forget that it takes courage to spend money on marketing during tough times. You just need to make sure that your marketing initiatives will be effective,’ he adds. INTRODUCTION
Mike Reed, SMG head of group operations
The January Furniture Show team has worked incredibly hard this year to ensure that once again the show is the highlight of the furnishing retailer’s year. With a great central location and four days to choose from to visit, including a Sunday, it’s an event not to be missed. When SMG was asked to consult on the development of a Flooring Showcase within the main show, we hoped that it would be embraced by the industry. We’re delighted that indeed it was and is now a strong hub within the main show. With some of the top flooring suppliers in attendance, it is an event that is relevant to the traditional flooring retailer and furniture retailers with a flooring department, as you will see top products in carpets, rugs, underlay, vinyl, wood and accessories. Many retailers with established flooring departments will be thinking of diversifying their offering in 2018 and the January Furniture Show is an ideal opportunity to see a host of companies representing the best of the furnishings industry as well as spending some quality time with top flooring suppliers too. Home accessories and selected furnishings can be an excellent tool to draw more valuable footfall into the flooring retailer’s store. For furniture retailers that have a flooring department, or are thinking of opening one, the showcase is the ideal opportunity to meet with top flooring suppliers. SMG will be part of The Flooring Showcase too, so retailers who are thinking of joining a buying group will be welcome to come and discuss the benefits available to them. SMG is proud to have been voted Best Business Support winner by readers of Interiors Monthly and our industry specialised Business Support Membership will suit all retailers visiting the January Furniture Show and deliver savings across every business. If you have a flooring department, full SMG membership is guaranteed to increase your profitability. So the January Furniture Show has something for everyone. I hope you will join us in making this year’s show a success and add it as a regular event in your diary. Visit: www.smg-group.co.uk

Support network Furlong Flooring meets the needs of customers with its floorcoverings ‘We are looking forward to 2018 and what better way to start than with the January Furniture Show at the NEC,’ says Mike Symonds, Furlong Flooring director. ‘Regency Carefree branded carpets are now regarded as among the best in the industry and ranges such as Trident and Elegance have set new standards in respect of appearance, wear and warranty for this category. The supersoft Essenzo range has been tremendously successful with the class leading Solitaire changing retailer’s perceptions. The addition of Spirito and Aria has extended the range and allows consumers to enjoy soft touch at new price points,’ he says. Design Elements’ vinyl ranges had a revamp last year. ‘The new style prayer book stand has been incredibly well received, offering seven ranges within a very small footprint. The bestselling products come with a felt backing and a superior construction for use throughout the whole home.’ With many consumers choosing hard flooring, Furlong Flooring has expanded its Natural Solutions brand to include LVT and supporting accessories. Incorporating a

0.3mm wear layer range and two 0.55mm wear layer ranges in click and dry back, they give retailers a comprehensive range in both price and colour options. Natural Solutions’ wood offer has 14 unique ranges that are sustainably resourced. Traditional and modern colours on a combination of broad and narrow planks will offer considerable consumer choice. A full range of matching accessories and underlays is also available. Natural Solutions’ laminate comprises three ranges. Urban and Frontier are established ranges offering 28 decors over three widths including four concrete tile designs. Last year saw the launch of the exclusive and cutting-edge herringbone click range Chateau in eight colours. ‘We understand and are focused on retail and the challenges faced by all of our customers. Stroolmount products are peace-makers Furniture and flooring aren’t always the best of friends when they come together. If furniture’s not moved or installed correctly then wood and tiled floors can scar easily. Carpets can get crushed and fibres can anchor furniture legs so if pushed, the joints can lurch and be fatally weakened. Since 2007 Stroolmount has helped manufacturers, retailers, installers and the hospitality trade protect their furniture and floors. Gill Finch, Stroolmount director, sees it as peace of mind protection that pays dividends. ‘The trade and customers invest a fortune in fine quality furniture and flooring, so it makes sense to spend a few pence to protect it and to create genuine customer goodwill. We’ve saved companies thousands in costly repairs, replacements and insurance claims with simple solutions costing as little as 1p each.’ Stroolmount loves solving problems. So when a client had a call from a hotel, they naturally turned to Stroolmount. The hotel staff found it hard to move the heavy bedside cabinets to clean the room and the uneven floors meant both the carpet and the cabinets could get damaged. ‘So we developed height adjustable glides,’ explains Finch, ‘allowing them to both move the heavy furniture easily and protect the floor.’ Stroolmount is a one-stop solutions shop. So when people wanted a way to move impossibly heavy recliner chairs and sofas, it came to the rescue. ‘We developed Furniglide Recliner Cups by adapting our screw-in Furni-glides that already easily slide heavy furniture across carpet. So now it’s easy to clean even around recliners.’ Visit: www.stroolmount.co.uk

Now moving recliners is as easy as putting your feet up Boost your recliner sales with new Recliner Glide Caps Heavy mechanisms make recliners hard to move and clean underneath. Dust accumulates. creating a breeding ground for asthma-causing dust mites Moving recliners is treacherous: the metal feet can dig in and rip carpets or scar wood/laminate flooring. Try lifting them and you risk injury. Stroolmount’s Recliner Glide Cups are the quick, easy and affordable solution. Made from PTFE (Teflon), they use the same principle stopping food sticking to a pan. A gentle push and they glide swan-like across the floor, without hurting customers’ backs, floors – or pockets with costly repairs. So now they can clean or rearrange their lounge as often as they want. They’re quick and simple to fit – you just peel the sticker and pop on the Recliner Glide Cup. That’s it. Fitting almost all with a 30mm or 40mm foot
So boost your sales ratio: put them on your showroom furniture. Our Furni-glides also helps furniture move easily over carpet and wood flooring. Purchase in bulk or packaged, self-adhesive or screw-in. See all Stroolmount’s furniture and flooring protection solutions:

SHOW GUIDE
Warwick bedroom
Rowico will debut seven designs Rowico UK returns to the NEC launching four living and dining collections and three dining chairs. Known for creating eclectic and unique ranges of living and bedroom furniture, the new lines are designed to impress, says Caroline Henchcliffe, Rowico UK UK business director. ‘We’re very excited to be exhibiting again at the January Furniture Show, it’s the highlight of our year and a great opportunity for us to demonstrate our passion for our products to customers both old and new,’ she says. ‘Bowood is eccentric and curvaceous: this collection really encapsulates dramatic styling for the home with sculpted pedestals and curved edges. It really is beautifully bold in an up to the minute colour combination.’ Living room collection Vibe is inspired by Rowico’s industrial style furniture and features hardware as a design detail, allowing a new look for the home office. Picasso is a striking clean and modern dining collection reminiscent of Scandinavian simplicity. With Warwick Ivory a neutral tone adds a new layer of sophisticated elegance to the Warwick family. ‘The Louise, Adele Check and Alpha chairs are an eclectic mix that are sure to
make a statement at any dining table, with a playful mix of check and gingham in neutrals and bold colours,’ she explains. A baby armoire has been added to the Warwick bedroom collection. In contrast, Rowico isn’t shying away
from strong style statements as demonstrated by the Wootton collection. With a seamless pairing between the antique charm of parquet patterns and modern designs, this range makes a bold statement. Visit: www.rowico.co.uk

The AIS Furniture Show Solihull 19-22 January
PREVIEW Make an entrance The AIS members’ only show admittance is 19-20 January. The AIS Furniture Show is open on: Sunday 21 January: 9am-5pm and Monday 22 January: 8.30am-5pm. Admission to the show is free but reserved for retailers only. Onsite parking, exhibition guides, lunch and refreshments are complimentary to all buyers and exhibitors.
Quality time A must event for independent retailers The quality of exhibitors and products on show is just one of the reasons why AIS is regarded by many as the leading furniture buying group in the country and makes the AIS Furniture Show an eagerly anticipated occasion by independent furniture retailers, according to the organiser. Once again, the show is held at Cranmore Park, Solihull to give AIS members, and the wider trade, an opportunity to source ranges from leading brands by viewing the merchandise that is designed, curated and targeted for the audience of quality independent furniture retailers. It opens

its doors to all on 21-22 January, following two days for AIS members only. The event continues to develop and provide support to the independent retail community by welcoming buyers from across the UK, Republic of Ireland and further afield. Running concurrently with the start of the January Furniture Show at the NEC means the exhibition gives buyers another reason to visit Birmingham: the proximity of Cranmore Park to the NEC makes visiting both easy. ‘All the suppliers exhibiting, whether they are new to the show or have exhibited previously, will be launching product. We have some exciting new

suppliers of upholstery including W Schillig from Germany and Sofa Via from Poland. We also have a new cabinet supplier Papaya Furniture from the Far East showing for the first time,’ says show organiser, Peter Mallinson, AIS merchandise director-home. ‘Additionally, there will be some superb new ranges from established upholstery favourites including himolla, Chateaux d’Ax, HTL and Primavera. As well as AIS exclusive ranges under the Ducal and Stag brands, there will be new product from companies including Habufa, Venjakob, MWA and Nathan. The previous AIS Furniture Show saw
the launch of the Five Key Looks concept for AIS members. This was conceived to help members create in-store displays with more aesthetic impact to provide ideas and generate add-on sales. ‘There was a tremendous response and we have further developed the initiative over the past year and are excited about the positive reaction we expect at this show. We all know the best retailers create inspirational and aspirational in-store displays, showing customers an interior style that they can recreate at home. Those important finishing touches can result in increasing conversion and also raise average transaction values
with great add-on sales,’ he says. Mallinson says the initiative is another example of AIS bringing added value to its members and raising standards in the industry. The five different themes are designed to appeal to all customer demographics and living styles and each is presented and merchandised based on current on-trend interior designs reflecting Industrial, Hotel Boutique, Scandi, Country and Classics. ‘The completeness of the furniture and accessory displays make it easy for retailers to replicate in-store,’ adds Mallinson. attract well over 20,000 international trade buyers and visitors from nearly 100 countries. For the first time, IFFS partners with Chantal Hamaide, founder and chief editor of French design magazine Intramuros, who will style an exclusive pop-up showroom within The Piazza Hall. Showcasing internationally renowned and up and coming brands that are looking to penetrate the global furniture, lighting, homeware, and lifestyle accessories markets, the feature area will be the focal point of IFFS 2018 activities — including the opening ceremony, media conference, Design x business
seminars, and the exhibitors and buyers networking evening. It is also the first furniture and furnishing trade exhibition in Asia Pacific to feature Augmented Reality technology on-site. Using this simulation technology, 20 leading exhibitors will showcase an expanded product range and extend their brand presence beyond the physical constraints of their stands. Visitors can enjoy an interactive 4D experience of participating exhibitors’ products by scanning the respective logos on the show directory with their smartphones. In addition, there will be a record total of 16 national pavilions. Five of these countries – France, Japan, Portugal, Spain, and Turkey – will be making their debuts at the event, while 11 others – Belgium, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam – are familiar favourites returning to the event. Enhancing the exhibition’s position as a truly international trade platform, the pavilions will allow visitors looking to source for specific styles or from certain geographic regions to narrow their search easily.

The Design Stars Showcase features 10 independent designers who will be putting their best foot forward with statement pieces and timeless designs. Visitors looking to uncover new, young talent will be able to meet some of the industry’s rising stars here. The organiser is also introducing another avenue for designers to meet backers. Offered in partnership with Australian crowdfunding portal Pozible, LiftOff is a platform for designers to garner financial support to convert their ideas into reality. An all or nothing fundraising concept, LiftOff offers the design community the means to reach and build supporters. Through this, the

organiser hopes to help more designers find success and to turn inspiring pieces from concepts to reality. Following the success of The Italian Hospitality last year, Italian designer Giulio Cappellini is returning to curate an exclusive feature area. Named The Italian Renaissance, this space is modelled after a typical noble house in Italy, and will
feature leading Italian furniture and furnishing brands in various environments such as living room, dining room, and bedroom. Visitors can expect to have an immersive experience as they walk through rooms filled with welldesigned furniture reminiscent of the Renaissance period. Visit: www.IFFS.com.sg

The Smart Home will be at the show for the third year
Smart talking Technology will be a key focus and communication is crucial What does a functioning smart home look like? What does it offer in terms of security, convenience, cost savings and added value? What fields of application does it have? How easy are the applications to use? What are the prerequisites and above all: how visible is the technology? And: how much does it cost? Answers to these questions can be found at the Smart Home at imm cologne 2018: in the form of a real house that visitors can enter and explore. ‘The spectrum covered by the smart home is constantly expanding and becoming more and more complex. We will present the smart home’s current possibilities in a fully functional architect’s house alongside an architect’s smart office and a self-contained flat with a supportive environment provided by assisted living technologies, which allow the older generation to remain in their own homes until a very old age. But we’re also looking ahead to the future,’ says Thomas Postert, Koelnmesse director. ‘We’ve seen that the smart home can only work if all those involved in it work closely together. Communication isn’t just crucial between the smart products themselves – the whole industry needs to network and agree on common standards and customer needs,’ says Postert. In addition to the numerous applications that visitors can try out, many consultants from the companies represented in the showcase will be on hand to answer questions. ‘Technologically oriented people who welcome the convenience and the idea of connecting media and home technology will quickly be enthralled by the concepts that we will present in the Smart Home installation,’ says Dick Spierenburg, imm cologne creative director. It is the third time that the Smart Home has been built. New this time is its location in the new Pure Architects segment
158

(Hall 4.2). The lifestyle-oriented showcase is closely modelled on the realities of home living today. Many partners and companies are collaborating on the installation, which ties in with the architecture-related ranges such as lighting and bathrooms that will be on show in the Pure Architects hall. Rehau, Häfele, Grohe, Biffar, Miele, Atomé and Nolte have confirmed their participation. Market researchers see the smart home as being on the threshold of penetrating the mass market. The market volume forecasts vary widely depending on the fields of application analysed. But there is agreement that dynamic and, in some cases surging, growth of between 10% and 50% is to be expected, depending on the product area. Generally, the smart home refers to the intelligent networking of electrical appliances including building services – heating, ventilation, air conditioning, cooling and sanitary installations – as well as communications and security technology. Consumers are currently most interested in security and energy-saving concepts. The smart home can be controlled in the residence itself via built-in interfaces or on the go via a smartphone or tablet. Guided tours will also be available. The show has also cooperated closely with the Connected Living innovation centre, which provides its more than 60 members with a crossindustry network of partners.
