EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
New year, new roles January proved to be another action-packed month with some interesting job changes Recruitment can be complicated, but two companies hoping that is not the case are Dunelm and Victoria. Employing former George at Asda boss Fiona Lambert as Dunelm’s product director (see p14) is an intriguing appointment that could bring a double bonus to the homewares chain. As well as being a queen of fashion – you don’t get to be the right-hand woman to George Davis for nothing – Lambert also has experience in homewares and sourcing. She debuted the George at Asda home range (before parent Walmart seemed to turn the tap off in the chain’s expansion) and became vice-president of own-brand design. Dunelm has previously warned shareholders that the expansion of its furniture offer has risks: it does not have a long track record in Far East sourcing and is
still playing catch-up; and the amount of products directly sourced are thought to be lower than some of its rivals. Lambert knows about sourcing. Some might wonder if John Browett, Dunelm ceo, has sourced his long-term successor? I suspect Walmart will regret Lambert’s departure and with the scope to involve the Worldstores sourcing, she’ll make a heck of a difference at Dunelm. But can she do customer service (both online and in-store)? That might well provide the answer. And one that needs to be answered. After more than six years at Balta, Philippe Hamers is joining Victoria as ceo. He has bags of flooring experience but how will it work having an executive chairman and a ceo? Geoff Wilding says Hamers’ ‘international experience and industry contacts will prove beneficial’ as the group ‘executes its advanced plans to expand into the growing €5bn European flooring market.’ So no more UK buys then? Congratulations to Daniel Cohen, Cohen’s Furniture, Failsworth, Manchester for winning a 12 month subscription to Interiors Monthly by visiting our stand at JFS.

Sales at Carpetright and ScS enjoy winter boost Carpetright, the country’s largest flooring retailer, saw strong growth during January as it returned to UK quarterly growth. In the four weeks to 28 January like for like sales rose by 6.8% at the 427-UK store chain. Sales for the quarter were 1.9% higher. Wilf Walsh, Carpetright ceo, says 120 stores have been converted to the new format and they continue to outperform non-converted branches. ‘We are pleased to announce a return to quarterly like for like sales growth in the UK. Our trading performance over the last four weeks, with like for like growth of 6.8%, gives us confidence that our turnaround strategy is on track. The refurbished stores with our new brand identity continue to outperform the un-invested estate and we are confident of hitting our target of 150 stores – representing over one third of the UK estate by the financial year end,’ he says. ‘Like for like sales growth in our Rest of Europe business was better than expected as consumer spending continued to recover in the Netherlands. While the outlook for the UK consumer remains uncertain, we remain confident in our plan and are comfortable with the current range of market expectations [of pre-tax profits of £13.9m to £16.5m]’. European like for like sales rose by 5.4%. ScS has reported an increase in sales during the past six months and says its winter sale went as expected. ‘The group has traded in line with the board’s expectations in the first half of the financial year and continues to make progress with its strategy for growth. The group achieved like for like order intake growth of 2.7% for the 26 weeks ended 28 January 2017, a pleasing
Carpetright returned to quarterly UK growth
performance against particularly strong comparatives. Two-year like for like order intake has grown 12.5%. Trading over the Christmas and January sales period was also in line with the board’s expectations,’ says the furniture and flooring chain. Its latest four stores: Aberdeen, Thanet, Plymouth and Straiton (Edinburgh) have seen ‘strong trading’ since opening. The chain now has 100 ScS stores and operates 28 House of Fraser concessions. But it cautioned that it would be difficult to match the strong performance of 2016. ‘We remain mindful that the group still faces the key Easter and May bank holiday trading periods and faces very strong comparatives during the remainder of the year. The board believes the business remains in a strong position to maximise opportunities as they arise and to grow market share.’
Albion hopes to score with Ikea Ikea could open its first branch in Sussex as part of a £170m development led by Brighton and Hove Albion FC. The football club is proposing to build the store on a landfill site at New Monks Farm, Lancing, by the A27 in West Sussex, alongside 600 homes and a primary school. A planning application is expected to be submitted in March, with the store opening in the summer of 2019 if everything goes to plan. ‘This site presents a great opportunity, given its scale, accessibility and location. A new store here would provide people from the greater Brighton area with
6

relevant home furnishing solutions and will create local jobs,’ says Tim Farlam, Ikea real estate manager. The chain has spent a decade looking for a suitable site for a full-size store near Brighton. B&HA approached Ikea last year after buying the 150acre site that is close to its £30m training complex. ‘When we bought the training ground site we were very conscious that it [New Monks Farm] was in the local plan and was going to be developed. Having invested more than £30m, it was important we protected our investment. The key issue was making sure the flood risk was dealt with on an ongoing basis
so the best course of action was to develop it ourselves,’ says Martin Perry, B&HA director. ‘The costs of the infrastructure are massive. This development secures Shoreham airport’s long-term future but you have to fund it so you need a substantial development. That’s why Ikea is the perfect solution. What it provides goes towards more than £40m of infrastructure costs.’ The homes, 30% of which would be affordable, would be completed by 2025. Ikea has begun construction of its Sheffield store, which is due to open in late summer.

You’ve found our Join the super soft carpet revolution and benefit from our unbeatable choices At Associated Weavers weʼve been predicting the
ever-increasing rise in demand for softer carpets for some time. Thatʼs why weʼve invested so much
effort and technology into our yarn development to
ensure that your customers have the widest possible choice of quality products.
Softness is no longer restricted to the bedroom. Todayʼs more casual lifestyles mean that we want
softness underfoot wherever we are in the home. But durability becomes an equally important
consideration when choosing a carpet for areas with a high footfall. Our leading ranges have been
designed to meet all these criteria – in any room of the home.
iSense and Invictus are the two brands that weʼve
selected to spearhead the soft revolution. Both of these brands have been enjoying above-average
sales through 2016, and this trend is due to continue. So donʼt be left holding the baby this year. Contact us on 01422 431100, or alternatively
contact your area manager for all the latest soft options.

The iSense way to softness
iSense is manufactured with our unique 100% polyamide ‘bounce back’ fibre, designed to always
look fresh and new. And in 2017 the collection will look even fresher with regular enhancements
throughout the year. So if you do have a bouncing baby around the house, go for this fashionable favourite for the perfect combination of softness and resilience. Also, it’s so tough that we’ve given
the whole range a full twenty-year wear warranty. Choices include the best-selling Serenity, a heavy
saxony in 16 colours, with other popular collections
including Seduction and Splendour in cost-effective
lighter weights. Newly introduced last year, we can now offer the subtle sparkle of Lurex in the Surprise collection to make the whole iSense range even more irresistible.
Even softer with Invictus We like to think of Invictus as our invincible
solution to softness, which is all down to its
unique 100% bleach-cleanable polypropylene properties. The iVinci SDO StainAway yarn from which it is manufactured is so reliable we’ve given Invictus a full 20-year stain and
wear warranty. It has a lustrous finish with high bulk that creates deep-down durability, yet is super-soft to the touch. A multi width
carpet in 2m, 2.5m, 3m, 4m and 5m variants,
we can confidently claim that Invictus is the
softest polypropylene carpet available anywhere today. And tomorrow? There’ll be even more choice through 2017 with new styles and shades to look out for. Perfect for any baby’s bottom.

Bed industry supplier duo fined £2.8m for price fixing Two suppliers of bed drawers are to be fined £2.8m for being part of a price fixing cartel after a tip-off to the Competition and Markets Authority. A third escaped being fined after it confessed its involvement in not competing on price and sharing out which customers they would supply. Thomas Armstrong (Timber) and Hoffman Thornwood have agreed to pay the fines after admitting market sharing, coordinating prices, bid-rigging and exchanging commercially sensitive information. BHK (UK) confessed its involvement in cartel activity shortly after the start of the investigation and will not be fined, provided it continues to cooperate with the CMA. The infringements admitted relate to the supply of chipboard and MDF-based drawer wraps to the bed, office and domestic furniture industry in the UK, between April 2006 and September 2008, involving BHK (UK) and Thomas Armstrong (Timber) and the supply of chipboard and MDF-based drawer fronts to the bed industry in the UK, between July 2006 and September 2008, and between at least September and October 2011, involving Thomas Armstrong (Timber) and Hoffman Thornwood.
Thomas Armstrong (Timber) and its parent company, Thomas Armstrong (Holdings), have agreed to pay a maximum penalty of £1,509,000 in relation to the drawer wraps cartel and a maximum penalty of £684,000 in relation to the drawer fronts cartel. The fines include a 20% reduction for settlement, to reflect the companies admitting breaking competition law and have agreed to follow a streamlined procedure for the remainder of the case. Hoffman Thornwood and its parent company, Consolidated Timber Holdings, have agreed to pay a maximum penalty of £688,000 in relation to the drawer fronts cartel, which includes a 20% reduction for settlement. ‘When competitors collude like this, they do so at the expense of customers, increasing prices, and reducing quality and choice. In this case, the collusion concerned products that are found in furniture in homes and offices across the UK. The settlement demonstrates the CMA’s determination to pursue those who take part in anticompetitive behaviour, which is harmful to consumers, businesses and the wider economy,’ says Stephen Blake, CMA senior director for cartels.

ScS carpet price claims ‘were misleading’ says ASA ScS has been told to change the way it uses MRPs in its advertising after the Advertising Standards Agency said it had been misleading shoppers. The chain listed online six Invictus and iSense carpets from Associated Weavers last April, including ‘Invictus Auriga carpet Now £21.99, MRP £38.99 40% Off’ and ‘iSense Serene Carpet Now £34.99 MRP £52.99 30% Off’. Carpetright complained to the ASA that the savings claims were misleading and unsubstantiated. ScS said it had asked Associated Weavers to verify the prices other retailers were selling the products at and that the MRP was based on the highest price it was being sold for.
The ASA said that consumers would understand the MRPs to be the price recommended by the manufacturer and at which retailers generally sold the goods across the market. Consumers would therefore expect the MRP to be a genuine selling price and to make a saving of the stated amount by purchasing those carpets from ScS. However, it said it had not seen any evidence that other retailers were selling the carpets at the MRP so concluded that those prices were not a genuine selling price and the savings claims based on them were misleading. It told ScS to ‘ensure that future references to MRPs reflected the price at which the products concerned were generally sold’.
Second design centre Kindred Living has opened a second design centre, showcasing 18 roomsets of its bedroom furniture across its 3,400sqft showroom at its head office at Newton Aycliffe, County Durham with the roomsets reflecting the size of typical British homes. ‘It is so much more than a showroom, with product interaction at its core, including a hands-on sample and accessories hub as well as each roomset featuring touch-screen technology to show more of the design schemes available with each range,’ says David Burchnall, Kindred director.

Adhesives firm Sanglier has named Mike Moran as director of sales. He was previously sales director Western Europe in the industrial division of Bostik.

Online update Wiemann UK has redeveloped its website, with updates for both consumers and retailers. A product search where visitors can define their choice by carcase or door colour and wardrobe type is now included on www.wiemannuk.co.uk. Consumers also have access to the stockist search: an easy to navigate search bar that provides information on the nearest independent stockists by using a postcode and preferred travel distance from a customer’s address. They can also download a full brochure. The new website also plays host to a selection of vital information for trade customers, such as a contacts list, a summary of agents and areas to help find local agents, and details of trade showrooms as well as key information on product ranges. ‘Wiemann is constantly looking for ways of improving communication with its customers and enhancing user experience, and the website does just that: it provides key information for both the public and our trade clients on an easy to navigate basis,’ says Simon Hewitt, Wiemann UK md.

Take note – act quickly Deal with complaints or face a forest of sticky labels As I walk up the customer’s driveway I notice that the garden is immaculate and the car is spotlessly clean. I ring the bell then untie my laces as I wait for the door to be opened. ‘Good morning, I’m Richard and I’ve come to look at your… Post-it notes.’ I step inside and flick off my shoes and there they are. The house is one of the cleanest and tidiest I’ve ever visited, but it’s littered with hundreds of small yellow stickers painstakingly applied by the customer to ensure I don’t miss anything. It’s common for customers to do this. How many sticky notes does it take to make a complaint valid? Not this many. For many customers a simple complaint becomes an obsession, especially if it’s not responded to quickly and effectively at the first opportunity. By the time I, or any other independent consultant, become involved the simple issue has grown. There are new examples of the problem, and examples of new problems. The customer has gone over the entire kitchen, three-piece suite,
A sea of sticky notes

carpet or flooring and found anything and everything that might not be as it should be. Things that they would not otherwise have noticed. Things that they’re not sure about, but don’t want to be overlooked. Things that are not problems at all, but they still add them to their list. And, perhaps, stick another yellow square in place to make sure they can find it again. So how many sticky notes does it take to make a valid complaint? Only one. There doesn’t need to be a note at all, just one minor defect. When there is a sea of yellow, I’m not looking at the quantity, I’m looking at the product to see if it’s right or not. Even if there are hundreds of notes stuck all over the product, the complaint will only be valid if there’s something wrong, but it will still be valid if there’s only one thing wrong. Consumer law is clear. When a customer buys something they are entitled to goods that correspond to the sample, are of satisfactory quality (and that includes being free from minor defects), and fit for their purpose. If the
colour’s wrong, the product’s faulty or it doesn’t do the job intended then as a retailer you can’t avoid your responsibility to give the customer the appropriate redress. In the first six months that means the customer’s choice of a refund, repair or replacement unless you’ve made clear that what they’ve bought is specifically made to their unique specification and they’ve signed to accept that they do not have the right to a refund. After six months, the right to a refund changes, but if a repair is attempted and is not successful then the customer regains this right. If that seems harsh, remember it’s not about what happens when things go wrong. It’s all about getting it right first time and responding quickly when mistakes or problems arise. Help save yellow trees by serving your customers well. Visit: www.richard-renouf.com Richard Renouf is an independent furnishings consultant

Sleeping in the red Census reveals scale of sleep debt Sealy UK has underlined its commitment to research and innovation in the sleep arena by an ambitious project with Loughborough University’s Clinical Sleep Research Unit, jointly launching the Sealy World Sleep Census. Sealy says it is the most comprehensive online sleep study ever conducted, with more than 15,000 respondents across the globe taking part, including Sealy licensees in China, South Korea, Australia, South Africa and the UK. It reveals a worldwide sleep debt: the perceived amount of sleep people need to effectively function mentally and emotionally the next day during the normal working week, minus the actual sleep they get each night.
Men lose five days sleep a year An old bed was the second most common reason for being kept awake
While the sleep debt in the UK is by no means the worst globally, it is still significant, with men on average losing 28 minutes a night and women faring worse, losing an average of 56 minutes each night. This equates to five days a year in lost sleep for men, and 10 days a year for women. South Korea had the largest working week sleep debt, with men losing an average of one hour 42 minutes each night (equating to 18.5 days a year) while women lose an average of one hour 23 minutes a night (equating to 15 days lost sleep a year).
77% of Britons fail to wake up feeling refreshed
Women lose 10 days sleep a year The census also explored sleep quality. More than threequarters (77%) of Britons fail to wake up each morning feeling refreshed and well-rested, while just 2% say this happens ‘every day’. Across the country, the worst ‘morning’ people emerged as those living in Sheffield (85% fail to wake up refreshed and rested), Cardiff (82%) and Edinburgh (81%). Visit: www.sealy.co.uk

Naturally responsive Dunlopillo latex mattresses offer a healthy sleeping environment A derivative from the sap of rubber trees, natural latex is one of the most eco-friendly mattress fillings and a premium natural foam alternative for the health conscious and green buyers alike. With anti-allergenic, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties, the unique manufacturing process of Dunlopillo latex ensures all the characteristics of natural latex are embodied within the innovative mattresses. This provides a naturally healthy sleeping environment which is inherently dust-mite resistant; beneficial for allergy sufferers and for those who suffer from hay fever, asthma and respiratory problems. The unique open cell structure of Dunlopillo latex means it is naturally breathable and does not have the heat

issues often associated with memory foam. Microscopic air bubbles promote constant air circulation and natural movement throughout the night help to ventilate the mattress, keeping the bed at a comfortable temperature. Through its elasticity latex offers progressive comfort by adapting and contouring to individual profiles and movements and recovers its shape immediately when pressure is removed. This means for those who dislike the moulding and sinking feeling in memory foam, latex can offer a resilient alternative. Dunlopillo says that with healthy sleepers changing their physical posture up to 60 times a night, this responsive nature is a huge advantage for achieving
deep sleep without disturbances. Each mattress in the Dunlopillo Signature Collection is made to a unique specification with a multi-density comfort core arranged in seven targeted support zones to reduce stress on the body’s pressure points. Softer comfort zones within the mattresses are designed to cushion shoulders, hips and heels, while firmer support zones help to provide correct alignment of the spine all night long. This optimal level of ergonomic support provided by Dunlopillo’s pure latex mattresses was acknowledged by the Which? All about communication The Carpet Foundation has enhanced its benefits The Carpet Foundation will have this month a retail member only section on its website and has also refreshed its consumer pages. Only accessible to members, the retailer section includes marketing support materials, technical support papers, a discussion area, and a blog. Explaining the rationale behind the development, Andrew Stanbridge, Carpet Foundation chief executive, says: ‘While the concept of a dedicated member only area on a website is not new, it helps us and our members on two fronts. Communicating with our members en masse and personally has always been an issue. This is a route to market that enables us to do this. It also provides us with a platform to shout about some of the things we do that benefit our members and that they might not be aware of. ‘Secondly, one of our USPs is that we do things that others can’t. Through this, we want to encourage our members to shout about themselves so that they can stand out from the crowd. For example, the press ads we have developed are not your run of the mill carpet ads. Rather they focus on the retailer and what makes them so different to their competition.’ The members’ area comes with instructions at all stages and is divided into five sections: Discussion area, Have Your Say, is designed to encourage retailers to talk about whatever they want. It is an open forum to which all members can contribute. Marketing support includes POS artwork that can be downloaded and printed. Four local press advertisements have the Carpet Foundation retailer as the hero and focal point and explain why consumers should go to them. The advertisements can include individual company details, logos, web address and a picture of their choice. There are also Carpet Foundation press
The members-only retail section offers information and support
releases that retailers can send to their local newspapers and magazines. They are written to enable retailers to personalise them. The area will also showcase the press coverage the organisation generates for carpet and its retail members. A dedicated code of practice area has the code in full, and downloadable conciliation and arbitration forms. The technical support area offers papers on topics including carpet and asthma; indoor air quality; underfloor heating, and the misconception that carpet is toxic. ‘The new website is further
development of the Carpet Foundation proposition and will, I hope, enhance our standing with our members. All members will be written to and telephoned about it and although not all our members will take advantage of, or indeed use, this new facility we won’t be faulted for lack of effort,’ adds Stanbridge. The consumer website, which receives more than 3,500 individual visitors every month, has a new look and feel. Its primary aim remains to drive consumers to their local Carpet Foundation retailer. Content has been tweaked and new images uploaded. Visit: www.carpetfoundation.com

CARPET John Pringle and Ian Henderson have decades of experience in the industry
Piles of experience The latest members of Penthouse Carpets’ sales team have years of knowledge As 2017 gets into its stride, Penthouse Carpets has added two people to its sales team. ‘We know our success depends on the good relationship we have with our customers, so we put all our prospective sales team under a great deal of scrutiny before we take them on board. Happily, our new salespeople have made the grade with flying colours,’ says Jonathan Gamble, Penthouse Carpets sales and marketing director. ‘John Pringle joins us with an incredible 40 years of experience in the carpet and flooring industry. What John doesn’t know about flooring or carpets just isn’t worth knowing. And after a full week in our Rochdale factory getting to grips with the locally-based manufacturing process, he’s an expert in the finer details of Penthouse Carpets as well. In fact, he’s so passionate about the products and dedication of the Rochdale team that customers in Cumbria, Northumberland, Durham, Tyne and Wear, Cleveland and the Isle of Man may well find themselves invited to visit the factory to share in John’s enthusiasm,’ he says. Ian Henderson has also joined the team. ‘The very knowledgeable Ian has decades of experience under his belt, spanning the print industry, golf market and carpet trade. designers, I think we got it spot-on. ‘We showed our bestselling ranges Oslo, Colorado and FRCO but we injected new energy and enthusiasm by displaying tables with House Chairs giving our retailers confidence that our core is very much current and by doing this we picked up additional displays. If you add the Portobello solid oak range to that mix, it is exactly what FO is best at. With the focus on design, lifestyle and more aspirational displays, we created fresh roomsets that appealed to a wider audience and made it easier for customers to understand the true potential of our ranges,’ he explains. painted bases, use soft-close runners, beautiful chrome finial hinges and handles was rewarded with exceptional order intake. ‘And the reaction to glass and gloss was amazing. The launch of Madison, Twist, Easy Rider, Phoenix and Jenson was a market driven shift towards more contemporary dining furniture. I was asked to develop a collection of tables and chairs that will appeal to “young at heart” consumers who appreciate design and function but demand quality and choice. Displayed together these ranges instantly create a focal point, a zone that is easy to understand, allows customers to mix and match tables and chairs to create their own look,’ adds Strugar. INDIVIDUALITY
FUNCTION
You don’t have to – but with concept me you can let your creative spirit run wild. concept me has so many different faces – from timeless simplicity to an individual off-beat personality. Everything you need to turn your own ideal bedroom concept into a reality. With three striking styles – ‘pure’, ‘natural’ and ‘offbeat’ – they provide the basis for a virtually limitless range of combinations. Yet there is something very practical that runs at the heart of planning and designing with concept me:
Furniture lives among people. You don’t live next to it but with it. In other words, it’s not just for admiring but something that you also have to enjoy using. Where are my favourite books? Where is the storage space for my bed linen? Can I charge my mobile phone by the bed? And which one of us actually gets up first in the morning? We have listened to your questions. And found answers.
SIMPLICITY. Your ideas. An amazing number of possible combinations. And the result? A bedroom with a very special personality. Your own.
Intelligent functions characterise a piece of furniture just as much as its design and finish. Doors which are light and compact are a pleasure to open. Storage space not only helps you to keep things tidy but also increases the pleasure of tidying. We think you’ll agree that the functionality of furniture has a major influence on our lives. Nowhere is this more apparent or tangible than with concept me.

Pip in Dreams Cygnet
‘We wanted to move G Plan forward and developed the concept of softness as a brief both in look and fee, with SnugSit,’ says Mark Hales, G Plan design director. ‘We developed layers of comfort bringing together a unique blend of foam, memory foam, a feather quilt and fibre topper. They are incredibly tactile sofas so you can sit back, relax and sink into true softness. It is the ultimate in contemporary softness,’ he says. Pip is a curvaceous high back motion model in armchair, two-seater sofa and three-seater sofa with concealed touchsensitive controls and footstool. Tess has adjustable pillow arms, allowing the user to find their ideal position or transform it from a sofa to a daybed. Its footstool also doubles as an
extension unit to create a laid back chaise. Its modular design has two widths allowing for an armchair (110cm), large chair (130cm), two-seater sofa (173cm), two-cushion three-seater (213cm), threecushion three-seater (236cm), threecushion four-seater (296cm) and a range of corner units. It is available in soft cover and leather. ‘Contemporary, laid back and easy living is key to both designs. They have a relaxed colour palette of muted grey shades, including accents of lavender, blush pink and warm mocha. Soft, neutral tones include dove, truffle and sage, while misty shades of smoke, dusk, haze and cloud bring a dreamy allure to the palette,’ adds Stephanie Hildon,
G Plan commercial director. It also introduced the Boyd accent chair and Firth, a high back modular sofa with static, manual and power motion options for independent retailers. Two seat widths and being fully modular allows the customer flexibility to create a range of configurations. It is available as an armchair, two-seater and three-seater. The latest evolution of Malvern was presented as ‘The Malvern you love... improved’ with updated seat fillings, reversible cushions and a footstool alongside styling tweaks such as removing the seam on the front. Starting with a bang Think Rugs intends to continue this year’s success ‘The start of a new year brings with it new objectives, fresh ideas and a revitalised focus. Already off to a fantastic start we are incredibly excited for what 2017 has to offer,’ says Sam Tippett, Think Rugs director. ‘While tough challenges based on increased costs due to exchange rate issues are still affecting prices across the industry, we have fortunately not seen any issues with the buoyancy of the market and consumers’ willingness to spend. The new year has seen sales continue to increase with orders placed in January up by over 30% compared to 2016. This year has really started with a bang and we look forward to it continuing in the same way.’ Tippett reckons its success is partly down to its constant product development. The January Furniture Show saw it showcase and launch more than 100 new designs in over 300 options.

Vinnie Jones and Danny Deacon
Celebrity power Vinnie Jones was on hand for Crown Floors Crown Floors drew the crowds as it launched the Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection. One of the first carpet brands to use celebrity-endorsement as a driving force in POS, it is designed to give retailers an opportunity to capitalise on celebrity status, with the image of movie ‘hard man’ Vinnie Jones. Offering eight qualities, it plays on Jones’ tough image with four super-strong styles, and reveals his softer side in four supersoft carpets. Each of these traits are presented on a double-sided book stand in black with Jones taking a prominent role. ‘The Deacon Jones by Crown Floors collection is something really exciting for the retail carpet sector, as it is one of the first to truly harness the power of celebrity endorsement. status has already seen the collection gain significant coverage in the Daily Mail and The Mirror and we expect this to continue as the POS units arrive at stores across the country,’ says Geert Vanden Bossche, Balta Group marketing director. A property developer for the past 20 years, Jones has partnered with long-time friend Danny Deacon for the collection. Deacon has significant industry experience and saw an opportunity to partner with Europe’s largest carpet manufacturer when developing the range. ‘Having spent hours choosing carpets for his property developments, Vinnie has a great understanding of what is required from carpet in today’s homes, so he had a clear idea of what he wanted to present in the Deacon Jones collection. I knew that Balta would be the perfect fit.
The company offers such a wide range and excellent quality and the Crown Floors brand has become a leading light in retail stores. The 14 month product development process underlined that we had made the right choice and I’m delighted with the carpets in the collection. They really have met all our expectations,’ says Deacon. For the super-strong ranges, the pair turned to X-tron extra-strong polypropylene, in pile weights ranging from 1,500g per sqm to 2,650g per sqm. Offering classic and modern looks alike, the Tough collection turns to the big screen for ranges: Casino Royale, Metropolis, Limitless and Carlito. Selecting Satino and Sensit fibres for carpets in the soft collection, Satino polyamide brings a high-luxe feel in Cassablanca and Notting Hill, while Sensit supersoft polypropylene brings softness and easy maintenance in Wonderful Life and Manhattan. John Tuton, Mammoth md, says that to be part of such a great show alongside so many valued customers, and to see new collections and ever-expanding shopfloor galleries, was a highlight for the Mammoth team. The company launched the Ashford Rise & Recline collection which, according to Tuton, met with much acclaim from retailers, with special mention of the award-winning technologies and additional benefits offered. ‘Designed and developed in direct response to the change in consumer attitude towards a more healthconscious approach to furniture and upholstery, Ashford – featuring our award-winning medical grade foam teamed with ergonomic design movements – attracted a great deal of attention at the show. We’ve already delivered the ultimate in comfort while you’re sleeping: why not be comfortable and supported during the day too?’ he says. ‘The team received excellent feedback during the show on a number of elements. REVIEW Right: There are four chair styles Launches included NT (left) and NR (below)
Keeping up with trends Kettle Interiors added Scandi and painted collections ‘Our launches for 2017 have seen us stretch our “style legs”, continuing the momentum from the launch of AB and TT collections last year,’ says Simon Ainge, Kettle Interiors sales director. The latest styles are NT, a Scandinavian style light oak range and NR, a painted collection with flag pattern grey limewashed oak tops. Kettle also launched a range of upholstered dining chairs, with four styles available in grey or beige fabric, which coordinate with the company’s oak and painted collections. ‘While we are famed for ranges that fit a broad spectrum of interior styles, it’s also important that we provide retailers with furniture that follows trends, exemplified in this year’s very different NT and NR launches,’ says Ainge. Danish influences found in the lines and curved edges of NT fit the increasingly appealing Scandi look. In contrast, NR has a classic feel with flag pattern grey lime-washed oak tops and brass-effect cup handles adding details that reinforce the style. ‘Sitting at very different ends of the style spectrum, the new ranges help retailers fulfil widening purchaser needs without having to move away from the attractive service on offer from Kettle Interiors. The same rule applies to the new upholstered chairs too, which can

be ordered in any quantity as part of our mixed approach,’ he says. ‘We have certainly seen widening taste among consumers shopping for furniture and this brings a new series of complications for retailers. With NT and NR, as well as last year’s AB and TT, our range is now suited to dealing with
these. Retailers can enjoy the benefits of buying furniture from Kettle Interiors across more trends than ever before,’ adds Ainge. All ranges are available through its wholesale, stockist and container delivery options. Kettle Interiors, tel: 01536 444 960

Grande future Balterio debuted a water-repellent digitally printed laminate range Balterio presented its first water-repellent collection of digitally printed floors, a technique developed ‘to create the most natural looking laminate flooring in breathtaking designs’. The company has invested heavily in the technology to develop digital printing on laminate. Its new customised production line features an ultra-HD printer, opening many possibilities in true-to-life pattern reproduction. The Grande collection features extra-long (2.05m) and extrawide (16.7cm and 24 cm) planks in 16 designs. Certain designs will be available in both widths that can be combined for an even more authentic look. A urethane lacquer finish gives the laminate a matt appearance as well as a soft and warm feel. HydroShield technology makes all Grande floors highly waterrepellent. Grande has a 10sqm repeat and will be available from March. Digitally printed Expressions has the tagline ‘dare to express yourself’ and has a series of bold designs, including herringbone. Traditional laminate production methods use a large cylinder that prints the design on to paper to be pressed on an HDF board afterwards. In digital printing, an advanced inkjet printer deposits the pattern directly on to the HDF-board. There is no contact with the planks, eliminating the transmission of small indentations on to the laminate. Ruben Desmet, general manager laminate at Balterio parent Unilin, says the technique is more flexible: a switch in designs comes without material loss and with only minimal delay; all it takes is to upload the new design into the system. ‘Digital printing allows for collections on demand – Balterio’s strong suit. In this respect, the introduction of digital printing was a logical step toward making the brand future-proof. Balterio is known for its quality and flexibility. Thanks to digital printing, we can go further than ever before in the customisation of laminate floors. Customers can choose both the thickness and pattern of the planks: an unprecedented level of co-creation in the world of flooring,’ he adds. Visit: www.balterio.com
