EDITOR’S COMMENT
Andrew Kidd EDITOR
What is good value? As the recent football transfer deadline day demonstrated, the answer to my question is: whatever someone is willing to pay Sofology being snapped up by larger upholstery rival DFS for £25m (with a possible additional payment next year) seems to be win-win for both sides. It seems that Ian Filby, DFS ceo, has struck a deal with Sofology founder Jason Tydesley that works for both. DFS gets access to a different customer base and Sofology’s online skills (it has invested £5m in the past 18 months in omni-channel technology development), initial savings of £4m with more to come, increased profits and another slice of market share. For Tydesley it is £25m upfront, plus the possibility of seven times profitability discounted by the £25m in a year’s time. It is affirmation that Sofology has a format that works, and he and the management team

can carry on running the chain. And all that for £10m less than a Premiership footballer with a mixed injury record. The departure of John Browett as chief executive of Dunelm brought with it the strange message that the chain now ‘requires different leadership.’ News of his leaving brought to mind Oscar Wilde’s Lady Bracknell interviewing Jack Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest: Dunelm has now had three chief executives since September 2014. Given Browett’s record of boosting profits by cutting costs, his appointment at Dunelm was an unexpected one, and it is now the third time he’s left a top retail job after a relatively short period, after Apple and Monsoon. He admitted he didn’t fit in with the philosophy at Apple and perhaps the same has happened again. ‘The fit between his leadership and Dunelm culture was uneasy,’ a company spokesperson told The Financial Times. Being as it is September it can only mean one thing: lots of exhibitions (many of which are taking place at the same time). In this issue you’ll find everything you need to know about the Bed Show and The Flooring Show.

DFS expects savings after Sofology buy DFS says £4m of immediate cost savings are likely following its acquisition of fellow upholstery retailer Sofology. The chain has agreed to pay £25m for its 37-store rival, with an additional payment based on profits in the following year. Jason Tyldesley, Sofology ceo, and the Sofology management team will continue to run the business, which will be independent in customer facing activities. DFS expects to make immediate savings in the purchasing of advertising, IFC, upholstery and other services. Savings will also come from distribution. No store closures will occur as a result of the acquisition and the store opening programmes of both DFS and Sofology will continue. Sofology increased sales by 5% in the six months to 30 June. In 2016 it had sales of £143m but had a pre-tax loss of £8.9m and an EBITDA loss of £2.7m as it rebranded from CSL. This compared to an EBITDA profit of £2.9m in 2015. DFS has refinanced its borrowings which will save it £1m a year. ‘While the UK furniture retail market continues to be very challenging, we remain focused on making strategic progress to strengthen our position in living room furniture. This acquisition represents a clear opportunity for DFS to accelerate our proven strategy of broadening our appeal, underpinned by well understood synergies. Sofology’s distinctive market position is a good fit with our existing brands,’ said Ian Filby, DFS ceo. DFS said second half sales fell by 4% in the six months to 29 July and EBITDA profits will be about £82m for the full year. It had warned in June that it had seen ‘significant declines in store footfall and customer orders across April, May and June,’ but its ‘summer sale, started satisfactorily in July, is consistent with trends we have seen in offline and online sector indicators,’ said Filby The 4% drop compared with a 7% first half increase, leading to a 1% rise for the year. New stores in the coming year include Wednesbury, Rugby and Haverfordwest, together with the refurbishment and relaunch of the Croydon branch. It also plans to open another smaller format store. A further five Dwell and five Sofa Workshop branches will be opened within DFS stores in the next six months as it completes its customer distribution centre conversion programme.

‘No shortage’ for Victoria Victoria shareholders have been told that ‘there is no shortage of high quality’ potential acquisitions in Europe as the flooring group continues to eye expansion. ‘The group is pleased to announce that it continues to make good progress in its key UK, European and Australian markets and is on track to meet all objectives for the current financial year,’ its AGM was told. ‘In addition to organic growth, the group continues to work on further acquisitions, in particular in Europe, and there is no shortage of high quality opportunities. With a strong platform for growth in place the board continues to remain confident for the future and committed to delivering returns for shareholders.’
Five Direct Wood Flooring stores have opened so far
Physical roll-out Online flooring retailer Connection Retail is continuing the roll-out of its Direct Wood Flooring stores. Last month it opened a store in York following openings in Coventry, Thurrock and Bracknell, selling to both consumers and trade. Its first branch in Birtley, began as trade only. The company has invested £300,000 in the four most recent stores. ‘The store launches are significant investments for the company as we look to increase our geographical presence in the UK. By operating a number of commercial counters in various regions this will also strengthen our links across the country, while maintaining a strong online presence,’ said Dan Foskett, Connection Retail md.
Orders drop at ScS Upholstery and flooring chain ScS’s like for like order intake for the six months to 29 July fell by 5%. Like for like orders for the year were down by 0.7% but overall orders were up by 1.4%. David Knight, ScS ceo, said he had highlighted in March that the chain faced ‘very challenging comparatives’ and what he thought to be ‘a softening market environment.’ ‘As such, while the like for like order intake in the second half of the year declined 5%, the two-year like for like order intake for the second half of the year improved and delivered growth of 16.9% and the two-year like for like order intake has grown 14.3%,’ he said.

Dunelm looks for ‘different leadership’ Homewares chain Dunelm has said it needs ‘different leadership’ after chief executive John Browett left with immediate effect. The former Dixons, Apple and Monsoon executive joined in July 2015 as a non-executive director, becoming chief executive in January 2016 after a six month induction with deputy chairman Will Adderley. The group said Browett has stepped down with immediate effect for personal reasons. ‘Dunelm has made good progress over the last two years during John’s tenure, however the next phase of growth requires different leadership,’ it said. Browett said it was ‘time to move on to a new challenge.’ Andy Harrison, Dunelm chairman, said he would provide interim executive leadership, supported by Adderley and Keith Down, cfo. He thanked Browett for ‘the strategic progress made under his leadership, most notably the exciting acquisition of Worldstores’. ‘Dunelm remains the market leader in homewares and we have ambitious and profitable growth plans to continue building the UK’s biggest and best multichannel homewares retailer. We have a strong executive team in place to make this happen, and the board remains confident in the group’s future prospects. Trading in the first two months of the new financial year has started positively, with an encouraging like for like sales performance,’ said Harrison.
Kelly heads Wayfair campaign TV presenter Lorraine Kelly is to be the figurehead of online retailer Wayfair’s autumn TV advertising campaign. It will launch mid-September with the first spot airing during Lorraine on ITV Breakfast. This will then air across a full media schedule including ITV, Sky, C4, and C5. From November there will be Christmas campaign followed by another in 2018. ‘We’re thrilled to join forces with Lorraine Kelly for our new TV campaign,’ said Martin Reiter, Wayfair Europe general manager. ‘Lorraine’s down to earth signature style makes her a perfect fit.’ In addition to the TV campaign, Kelly will collaborate with the retailer on an online festive dining room makeover. Wayfair’s Wayfair, Joss & Main, AllModern, DwellStudio and Birch Lane brands generated sales of US$3.9bn in 2016/2017.

C&C drives growth for Walker Greenbank Furnishings group Walker Greenbank has seen sales soar following its purchase of Clarke & Clarke. The group paid an initial £25m for the brand last October, with a further £17.5m dependent on performance. Including Clarke & Clarke, which had sales of £22.4m in 2015, group sales were up 35.6% in the six months to 31 July. On a like for like basis, brand sales excluding Clarke & Clarke were up 3.6% in reportable currency and up 0.5% in constant currency. But, UK sales dropped by 1.8% while European and US sales were 11.9% and 12.9% higher respectively in reportable currency and 3.3% and 2.7% in constant currency. Licence income has continued to Clarke & Clarke’s Bloomsbury perform strongly in the half year and is expected to be up by about 21% in reportable currency and 18% in constant currency compared with the same period last year. This growth has been driven by the new licensing agreements signed in the prior financial year relating to blinds in the UK and bedding in the US and Asia. The company’s manufacturing operations have benefited in the half year from improving order books, driven by digital printing and an increase in orders from both new and existing third party customers.
Stores boost online traffic Research from property developer British Land reveals that when a new store is opened its online traffic leaps locally and stays at the higher level. Using the experience of companies that opened stores at British Land shopping centres and data from Connexity Hitwise, retailers with under 30 branches experienced an 84% increase in traffic to its website from the surrounding postal area within six weeks of opening. ‘Digital traffic from the local area then remained around this level, demonstrating that a physical store has a significant, positive and sustained impact on digital interaction with the brand,’ said Charles Maudsley, British Land head of retail, leisure and residential. For chains with more than 30 stores the increase is 52%. ‘The research shows that physical stores are an engine of online growth. Consumers choose brands that align to their lifestyle and values: a physical store enables a retailer to demonstrate its brand in action and drive interest online. At the same time, stores enable retailers to respond to evolving shopping habits, market their brand effectively, and deliver products more efficiently,’ he said.

Door to Floor delivery. Now quicker than ever before.
At Associated Weavers we appreciate how crucial efficient carpet delivery logistics need to be for you
as a top retailer to stay ahead of your competitors. That’s why we’ve invested so much time and money
to introduce a super-efficient delivery system to maximise the appeal of our entire carpet collection.
Since we increased our transport fleet by 35
vehicles last autumn, we have enjoyed significantly
greater sales. And, in the UK, our local distribution partner has also added eight new vehicles to make
sure we keep up with the anticipated demand from
you and your customers this year. Across most of
the UK, you are now able to receive deliveries of rolls or cuts within five working days from the point of
order. We have also improved our service to
Northern Ireland and the more remote areas of the
UK. Just as our transport fleet now offers unbeatable delivery schedules, so our range continues to produce a superior performance as well.

Way ahead of the rest
Carpets might not be the most obviously branded item in the consumer’s shopping basket, but brand
awareness is a marketing tool that we take very
seriously at Associated Weavers. That’s because we are usually the first to identify trends, the first
to introduce new technologies, and the first to offer stunning merchandising and display support
in your store. These ‘firsts’, combined with our strong marketing strategy, are all the ingredients
we need to stay firmly in front. And we do everything we can to uphold this enviable reputation.
A trio of firsts
Just as we lead the way with transport, we’ve led
the way with new brand launches over the years.
When we introduced the revolutionary iSense, it was heralded as the softest carpet in the market.
This has been such a success story that we’ve
regularly added new ranges. Currently, new Discretion with 14 colours and Obsession with 11
colours are the ones to look out for this autumn. After iSense came the fabulous Invictus brand, an invincible stain-resistant, multi-width carpet that
will be another beneficiary of new additions this year. And the latest exciting new product is the Vivendi brand, for ultimate comfort all around the home. As one of our most innovative luxury
products, it features our unique iVivo yarn – a new tenth-gauge solution-dyed nylon fibre representing years of industry-leading work by our designers and technicians.
So keep on looking out for the Associated
Weavers butterfly – for efficient deliveries of unique products, all with flying colours.

Australian House plans to open 75 UK stores Australian homewares and flooring retailer House intends to open 75 stores in the UK, with the first opening by next April. Steven Lew, Global Retail Brands chief executive, says it will avoid high profile flagship stores to ensure the same standards in every branch.
‘Over the last couple of years we’ve looked at opportunity markets, both nationally and internationally, and the UK seemed like a very good fit for us. Our overall aim is to inspire customers who enjoy entertaining at home,’ he said. ‘We want House to become a household name in the UK. SERVICE
Richard Renouf
Underfloor heat shock... …can be avoided by checking with the manufacturer George scratched his head. ‘I’ve not seen anything like this before,’ he said. Mrs B stood with her hands on her hips, her fists clenched as firmly as her teeth. ‘Well, you’d better find out what’s causing it,’ she said. ‘I’m not accepting this flooring if it’s going to warp and change colour like that!’ Then she turned and stormed out of the room. This, thought George, had started out as a perfectly normal – and easy – job. A new extension, so the subfloor was as flat as it could be. Light-coloured bamboo flooring that could be fitted as a floating floor in the same way as the hundreds of laminate and engineered wood floors he’d laid over the past 15 years. A simple rectangular shape with no intricate cutting to be done. What could go wrong? The answer came less than a week after he’d finished the job. Dark patches started to appear and then fine bubbles had developed in the lacquer. The flooring had expanded and started to lift. Despite trimming it at the edges so there was still an expansion gap around the

room, the problems just got worse. Suddenly George’s face brightened: ‘It must be the underfloor heating.’ Anxious to prove his point, he sought expert help. Tests were carried out on the heating system (it was working well and not leaking); the subfloor (the screed was still drying out so the moisture content was very high); and the flooring (it had absorbed the excess moisture from the screed). The conclusion? George should have tested the floor for moisture before he began. Underfloor heating has come a long way in recent years and if it’s planned, installed and maintained properly, many flooring products can be laid over it. But, check with the manufacturer that the flooring is suitable and does not exceed the maximum tog value recommended by the heating manufacturer. Then carry out all the normal checks that you should for any subfloor and take any necessary precautions such as using high temperature adhesives. Even carpet gripper should be OK as the pipes don’t usually run to the edge of the room, but
it can be glued if you’re not sure. Just be careful when fitting door bars as pipes may run between rooms. It’s still true that most flooring products are not suitable for use over electric underfloor heating systems as these sit very close to the floor surface and so can create hot spots: they’re intended for use under ceramic or stone tiles which disperse the heat. Reputable underfloor heating manufacturers offer advice about their systems on their websites and usually via telephone helplines as well, so it’s worth checking before installing flooring. BS 8201 (wood based flooring) and BS 8203 (resilient flooring) give advice about the maximum surface temperature of the subfloor and flooring and are also essential reading, but note that George was dealing with bamboo which isn’t covered, so the manufacturer’s instructions are the rule. DESIGN TREND WARM INDUSTRIAL This trend is the evolution of industrial, which began with conversions of old manufacturing spaces into lofts and urban living. Raw materials such as concrete and steel were left exposed, but paired with the right accessories these surfaces became surprisingly inviting. Here, the well-established industrial style has been bought up to date by adding warmth with soft touches of brassy colours and more forgiving materials. Corks and polished marble add luxury and a touch of glamour to otherwise cool interiors. Use highlights of teal or pink to add splashes of colour and embellish neutral palettes while a mixture of both vintage and modern accessories keeps rooms contemporary. Textured textiles like pillows, blankets and curtains with heavyweight distressed fabrics make spaces feel more cosy and inviting too. With its raw surfaces and dark shades this trend is a practical yet fashionable look which will stand the test of time.

With a trend that is so focussed on the juxtaposition of cold and warm, velvet carpets are another great way to bring in texture, Brintons velvets are specially developed to give added splendour, with higher pile heights and denser row counts these carpets will bring warmth and softness into a space to contrast with the cooler marbles and concretes. New wave of shops ‘Technology has a major influence on all aspects of our lives today and will continue to play a large part in shaping the way in which we will shop in the future. The future of retail and the path that retailers will follow is very much in line with the way in which technology develops,’ says Sarah Hanley, je+1 associate designer. ‘Retailers will continue to embrace new advances and capabilities to enhance not only their business operations but the overall experience they offer to customers. Those who don’t will find themselves falling behind both their existing competitors and the new breed of entrepreneurial retailers who are infiltrating the market with new waves of thinking and approaches. ‘All of which will continue to entice customers who are seeking and discovering better, quicker, easier and more exciting shopping experiences.‘ Visit: www.jeplus1.com

BEDS AND BEDROOM Research says one in five of Britons sleep naked
When the heat is on… …Sealy has some tips for keeping cool at night
Ventilation is important
36
Interiors Monthly September 2017
Warmer weather can create an uncomfortable sleeping environment, not least if you suffer from an allergy. Research for Sealy found that 42% of people experience a disturbed night’s sleep during hotter nights: meaning customers will often turn to retailers for advice on how to get an optimum night’s rest. Thankfully, there’s plenty of useful advice to share with shoppers: from selecting a mattress that features specific technology designed to keep you dry and cool at night, to smart sleeping tips that can reduce the likelihood of overheating and becoming irritated. Sealy offers several mattresses that feature technology to create the optimum sleeping environment. Geltex technology and Tencel fibres help provide comfortable sleeping conditions all year round. Geltex technology is a combination of an extremely elastic gel and air-permeable foam. When combined this provides pressure relief, body support and active breathability. The breathability is achieved by the air permeable foam and open cell structure of the Geltex. This allows air to circulate more easily, resulting in a more regulated temperature in bed. A number of Sealy mattresses contain Tencel fibres that help keep sleeping conditions cool and dry. Enhancing the quality of sleep, the fibres optimise the absorption of moisture and have excellent cooling properties, ensuring the sleeping area is dry. Many Sealy mattresses also feature Adaptive technology, an intelligent textile that changes passive textiles into those capable of responding dynamically to environmental changes such as temperature and moisture levels. Adaptive technology keeps an individual comfortably cool and dry throughout the night by using the body’s energy to accelerate moisture wicking, evaporation and cooling. The company’s research also found that 36% of people sleep in separate beds when the heat becomes unbearable, so it’s not out of the ordinary for retailers to suggest customers break out the sofabed during the stuffiest nights.

BEDS AND BEDROOM
Sealy Teramo 1400
Most people toss and turn in bed to find the coolest spot when it gets too hot, but far from having a cooling effect, it makes the situation worse. Limit moving around as much as possible and break up bodily contact, for example by placing a small pillow between the knees. Cold pressing pulse points by placing a cold flannel on the wrists and neck has a cooling effect on the entire body and aids relaxation. Another, perhaps more obvious, solution would be to sleep in the buff, which one in five Britons do. Other habits include: 36% of people favouring the classic pyjama set, 26% preferring a nightie/sleep T-shirt, and 16% opting for pants and boxers. While those in the UK are keener to shed clothing than people in Asia, South Africa and Australia, sleeping in the nude has health benefits. Not only does it ensure body temperature remains low, it can also improve circulation and keep skin healthier. Sleeping naked can help decrease cortisol, increase the growth hormone and balance melatonin, all of which work to help build healthy sleeping habits, reduce stress levels and late night food cravings. Sleeping conditions are also affected by ventilation in the bedroom, weight of bedding and nightwear. Earlier this year Allergy Awareness Week focused on eczema, a skin condition that greatly affects the sleeping habits of those who suffer from it. The condition can be triggered by many factors, including allergens and a damp sleeping environment. To avoid flare ups, sufferers must sleep in a setting that is cool, dry and most important, hypoallergenic. Neil Robinson, Sealy sales and marketing director, recommends having a mattress that includes smart fibres to help keep the sleeping environment fresh and dry. Smart fibre technologies in Sealy products include Purotex and Tencel. Purotex fibres are an anti-allergy technology which combine all the typical allergy triggers, such as mould and dust mites. This technology releases friendly bacteria into the fabric of a mattress to reduce mould and moisture, and the fibres help

neutralise odour: proactively retaining the health of a mattress. Tencel fibres help keep individuals cool and dry throughout the night. The fibrils are hydrophilic and optimise moisture absorption with excellent cooling properties, ensuring the sleeping area remains dry. In addition, its inherent natural properties do not give bacteria a chance to grow. The fibres are also 100% organic, extracted from wood pulp from sustainable tree farms. ‘Warmer weather can be one of the most difficult times to get a good night’s sleep, with a lot of us getting hot and bothered when trying to fall asleep. However, altering something as simple, but essential, as the mattress you sleep on every night can offer an unbeatable relief to allergy and heat issues experienced in bed,’ adds Robinson. Spreading its springs Hästens is looking for further UK expansion After opening three outlets in the spring – Midfurn in Alcester, Warwickshire and Cookes Furniture in Christchurch, Dorset and Erdlington, Birmingham – Hästens is looking to increase its UK presence further. ‘We are excited to offer our devoted UK customers the choice of seven outlets across the UK following these three developments. Each store reflects the exclusive and bespoke experience that is essential to the Hästens’ charm, and we are excited to continue to make and develop our beds that have led us to global recognition,’ says Oliver Bowen, Hästens UK manager. Plans are under way to add a further four stores during 2017. For 2018 Hästens will release its collaboration with Swedish design duo, Bernadotte & Kylberg. The collection, in which the Hästens signature blue check has been reimagined, consists of the new Appaloosa and Marwari beds, both of which use the construction of the Hästens 2000T bed. Throughout the two-year design process, Hästens, along with the designer duo, created two fabrics that bring to life the forward-thinking vision of Bernadotte & Kylberg, while also upholding the supreme comfort and construction of the beds. ‘We could not have imagined a more suitable partner than Bernadotte & Kylberg to interpret our signature blue check, with a truly innovative and modern performance. Both Appaloosa and Marwari exceeded our expectations and the result pushes the boundaries of what is Hästens’ classical design,’ says Jan Ryde, Hästens chairman and fifth generation owner. ‘We were very excited when we were contacted by Hästens. It felt very tempting to work with such a classic Swedish brand, which also has such a strong graphical expression,’ says Oscar Kylberg, Bernadotte & Kylberg, president. ‘For us as designers, it is equally important with the two-dimensional expression in the pattern of the three-dimensional shape of the bed. To interpret such iconic designs was challenging, but exciting, and we are very proud of the result.’ Visit: www.hastens.com

Building confidence The NBF continues to develop its Code of Practice ‘We’re proud of the fact that we introduced our Code of Practice back in 2013 and that both trade customers and consumers can have more confidence in National Bed Federation members’ products than they can of many others offered, which are not subject to our regular scrutiny,’ says Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director. ‘The NBF name is a brand like any other and we have to protect its reputation. We have just completed our third round of audits of all our members, extended to cover other regulatory requirements – EUTR, textile composition labelling; REACH awareness and biocides Above: Jessica Alexander, NBF executive director Top right: Proud to stock POS will be available at the Bed Show Right: Sleeptember is one of many campaigns Below: The Sleep Council distributed more than 40,000 leaflets last year

regulations; as well as flammability, trade descriptions and cleanliness of fillings.’ After each round the process is reviewed and any adjustments and improvements needed are made. This year it introduced random due diligence testing, which means it buys finished products from both members and non-members and has them tested. Alexander says the scheme is not meant to be punitive: the federation is not intending to catch its members out. ‘We want them to understand their legal obligations, and the rules and procedures involved in meeting those. We aim to give them as much help and guidance as we can so they satisfy the requirements. But, ultimately, we would not hesitate to take appropriate action and suspend or expel a member which failed to take those obligations seriously,’ she says. ‘Many companies have come to us since we launched the Code of Practice and asked to join us because their retail customers want them to. As I say to those who ask: which would you prefer to do: buy from a non-NBF member about whose procedures you probably don’t know much and which would require a lot of effort on your part to dig into; or buy from an NBF member who is regularly audited against the requirements of a Code of Practice which is considered robust enough for Trading Standards to give it legal status as Approved Advice from our Primary Authority. ‘For consumers we just keep on reminding people to do their homework before they buy and not to be lured by enticing bargains. It’s impossible to completely eliminate rogue traders in any market sector,’ Alexander adds. Visit: www.bedfed.org.uk

The treatment has been approved by Allergy UK. Sanitized fabrics also provide effectiveness against MRSA and E. coli, are dermatologically tested, Bluesign approved and accepted for OEKO-TEX Standard 100. Staingard treatments inhibit staining to mattresses, upholstered bed frames and headboards from everyday hazards such as perspiration and other bodily fluids, as well as accidental spillage from drinks. In addition to the treatment itself, customers have a five-year product warranty, which can also include cover for structural protection for the same period. Sherborne Upholstery is showing its full range of adjustable beds, all supplied in two parts, for easy assembly in the home. Brand evolution Highgrove Beds Group encompasses three distinct brands Highgrove Beds Group celebrates its 15th anniversary this year and after rapid year-on-year growth, the company now has a turnover of more than £20m and employs 185 people. Its 20acre Liversedge, West Yorkshire site has benefitted from major investment of more than £3m since it was bought in 2015 and is now one of the UK’s biggest and most efficient bed manufacturing facilities. In the past year, the final phase of the site development has seen a further £1m invested in a 25,000sqft warehouse extension, and the building of a further 50,000sqft of manufacturing space set for completion. These new facilities will enable the company to reach its target of doubling its turnover in the next three to five years and maintain its customer service in delivering 98% of all orders within seven days via its FasterSleep nationwide express delivery service. Historically, Highgrove was seen as mainly targeting the budget end of the
52
Interiors Monthly September 2017
market and found it difficult to penetrate the mid to upmarket sectors. The strategic business and marketing objectives became clear: create a seamless portfolio of brands enabling Highgrove to take on the wellestablished manufacturers with clear differentials in specification and brand positioning. Highgrove has now successfully completed phase one of this plan, with three distinct brands: moresleep, Sanctum and Highgrove. Each has its own identity and product story and are launched under the Highgrove Beds Group umbrella – and all will feature in the group’s biggest presence at the Bed Show. Featuring predominantly Bonnell open-coil spring units, the moresleep brochure collection has established itself on shopfloors. The brand features a wide selection of cover and comfort options, ranging from hand-tufted knitted stretch fabrics combined with memory foam to
versatile guest beds in traditional damask. ‘The flagship Highgrove brand has been completely reinvented,’ says Shane Harding, Highgrove Beds Group head of marketing. ‘In addition to creating a wide range of pocket sprung specifications, the brand name has also undergone a major makeover so that it now reflects its quality mid-market position. The Highgrove Beds collection provides bed retailers with the opportunity for high margins and exceptional service. All Highgrove models are available in a wide range of size, storage and base cover options, and with price points meeting virtually every consumer need,’ he says. Several models will be unveiled at the show, including Anniversary, marking Highgrove’s 15 years of manufacturing. Anniversary will feature luxurious natural fillings and will be launched with a special show offer for stockists. ‘Following months of strategic

development, the new logo style with associated high impact POS will feature at the show. The Highgrove brand aims to be seen as different and innovative, and this is reflected in the launch trade advertising campaign. It doesn’t feature yet another bed, or woman lying asleep – but reflects the multi-cultural characteristics of UK consumers,’ explains Harding. A new high-impact modular in-store display will also be made available free of charge to key stockists and this will feature on the stand. The flexibility of the new displays mean they can easily be
tailored to match store floor models, whether they be natural, Cool Gel, latex or memory specifications. Sanctum is a traditional hand-crafted brand featuring up to 10,000 pocket springs and has also received British Wool Platinum accreditation. Targeted at the premium price sector, Sanctum
benefitted from the introduction of in-store displays this year and the group is looking to appoint further new stockists throughout the UK. The new Sanctum website (www.sanctumbeds.co.uk) has recently been launched. Visit: www.highgrovebedsgroup.co.uk

Say to the first truly hybrid mattress. We all know a great mattress is key to a great night’s sleep. That’s why some have memory foam, for pressure relief. Some have pocket springs, for support. Some have micro coils, for comfort. And some have natural fillings to wick away moisture. That’s when we got thinking. If each of those is comfy on its own, what happens if we put them all together? Introducing hybed. Mattresses that take all the best technology out there, and put it into one. The ultimate in materials, to create the ultimate in comfort. Say hy to hybed, the hybrid mattress.

New Gwendoline Cashmere from the Enchanted collection
Trooping the colours Boutique style and more shades will be on offer from Sweet Dreams Luxury and choice will be key to the Sweet Dreams’ display and to its new product offer for 2017-2018. The trend for more colour, allowing the bed to fully contribute to bedroom decor, is epitomised by its latest collection of beds: Funky Boutique. Made in the UK, the frames and headboard trims are upholstered in a choice of three colours and come in two styles: Hipster and Expression. The headboards are what really set Funky Boutique apart, as they feature a patterned inset, in a choice of four fabric designs or a matching plain. Each design comes in a further choice of three colourways that complement the colour of the frame, and there’s a choice of leg, too. Offering a wider choice of colours to divan bases than ever before in the luxury collections, Royal Pillowtop will have four colourways from September, while Pocket Air will feature two colourways to the bases with matching headboards. For the latest Wellbeing beds there will be a choice of three divan base colourways. Other developments include Gabriela, a hand side-stitched mattress with a 2,000 pocket spring count, and Marcella, another pocket spring bed with a contrasting 3D border and high loft microquilting. Second generation Shire will build on 2016’s introductions The Shire Bed Company will bring its latest developments to the show, including its next generation of Active Response and Roll & Rest collection of vacuum packed mattresses. Launched at last year’s show, Roll & Rest has been so successful that, as part of its factory redevelopment, Shire has invested almost £500,000 and allocated a dedicated division to its production. ‘The Bed Show is the highlight of our year and we are looking forward to launching a range of products, including Pillow Talk, a range of specialist pillows recently trialled by elite Yorkshire athletes,’ says Fara Butt, Shire marketing director.
‘We will also have on show Glitz, one of our latest collections of luxury velvet headboards and bases – available in 14 modern shades from on-trend chartreuse to classic post-box red. ‘Visitors to our stand can also expect an exciting new product: our big reveal,’ says Butt. Seeing the difference The show is a key platform for Furmanac ‘Our ability to continually stand out from the crowd stems from both our capacity and capability to innovate,’ says Aubane Pattar, Furmanac sales and marketing director. ‘Having been in the industry for almost 50 years, our wide knowledge is the foundation for creating new products. To remain innovative, we are always looking for ways to incorporate new materials and technologies and thankfully, due to the scale of operations and our dedicated development team, we have the ability to trail new concepts almost as soon as the lightbulb moment strikes,’ she says. To remain competitive, Furmanac invests in its infrastructure. ‘Whether it is in machinery, resources to recruit a new skill set, or a new tool to improve efficiency, if there is a justifiable case for it we are always willing to invest in our family business,’ she says. Most recently it purchased a quilting machine that will increase the range of designs it can create. ‘Being customer focused is one of our core values and I truly believe that this is one of our key strengths in being able to stand out from the crowd. We work with our retailers to create custom POS items that can range from one poster to working on a complete gallery. Ultimately we understand that no two stores are the same and that is why we have always been so willing to work with

our customers on their displays,’ she explains. For Pattar, the Bed Show is such a great platform for the company as only accredited bed manufacturers are there. ‘Year on year we pass our NBF audits with an A grade, which means that retailers and consumers alike can have complete confidence in the quality of products we hand-make,’ she says. The show is quickly becoming one of Furmanac’s biggest exhibitions of the year with 2016 setting a new sales record at the show. ’More importantly, it provides a great

opportunity to catch up with our existing customers outside of our respective offices as well as showcase the range to prospective clients we have been speaking to,’ she says. ‘The show is one of the best ways to showcase the new products we have been diligently working on. We are trying to keep the specifics of the new products a secret, but what I can promise is new designs, new fabrics and new unique product features in all of our adjustable beds, divan beds and upholstered bedframes,’ adds Pattar. Somnus will mark the 65th anniversary of supplying the Royal Yacht Britannia
Adjustability reigns Somnus will introduce several models Somnus is unveiling an adjustable sleep system, as well as showcasing beds from its Supremacy collection. Somnus’ adjustable sleep system has been designed with today’s busy lifestyles in mind. The bed can be adapted according to a consumers’ ideal relaxing or sleeping position thanks to two handmade recliner mattress options. The premium sleep system is complemented by a large selection of design-led headboards with consumers having the option to upholster their sleep system in a selection of fabrics. Tech-savvy consumers can upgrade the controls for the adjustable sleep system to a Bluetooth remote control, which is operated by a smart phone app. Somnus will also showcase its Royal Britannia mattress: a limited edition bed that has been created to celebrate 65 years since Somnus supplied the Royal Yacht Britannia with

mattresses ahead of its maiden voyage. The Royal Britannia model boasts natural materials including cotton, mohair and silk, as well as British wool. Also found inside the mattress is Wensleydale Eco Wool from Harrison Spinks’ own flock of rare Wensleydale sheep, reared on its 300acre farm in Yorkshire. These natural materials are complemented by 10,000 Sensa Intelligent pocket springs, that gently

respond to the sleeper’s body, dissipating weight and providing better postural support. The coil within each Sensa Intelligent pocket spring is 40% lighter than a standard coil, meaning more springs can be added without the mattress becoming heavier. This spring technology is also used across Somnus’ Supremacy collection, which features 12 models boasting spring counts of up to 34,500. Visit: www.somnus.co.uk

Step up Siesta Beds will highlight upgrades to its models Siesta Beds, with over 30 years of manufacturing in the UK, is using the event to show improvements in existing models following the success of the 10 models introduced at Telford in 2016. There will also be upgrades to many of the core range, with improved fabrics, borders and upholstery. This has been warmly greeted by existing customers, along with new customers who have become Siesta Beds stockists. The success of the encapsulated superior edge to edge support collection has given retailers the opportunity to offer greater value at lower price points. A number of these models will now have the benefit of Gel Tech included within the product. Its flagship Windermere model has more than 4,500 pocket springs with a mixture of natural fillings of mohair, pashmina, cashmere, silk, wool and bamboo with a soft damask cover. Along with the Pashmina and Connoisseur beds, this takes the collection of beds with traditional damask fabrics to six. Tel: 0121 773 9969

Moving with the times Deluxe Beds will update four of its brands Deluxe Beds will premiere its additions for 2017/2018 at the show. The beds, headboards and bases are spread across four of its brands: Deluxe Beds, Modern Living, Hamilton & James, and the recently revamped Pennine Bed Co. Deluxe Beds has entirely changed the Pennine Bed Co range. On an aesthetic level it now sports a fresh logo and a new look and feel that is designed to move the brand ahead with the times. Along with this comes a new range of foam-based beds: the Ultra Edge collection. This collection comprises seven beds, all with a foam border and filled with springs, ensuring firm support. The Modern Living Collection has also expanded with nine beds added. These range from pocket spring mattresses to 12.5g and 13.5g springs, allowing for an even larger variety of firmness throughout the range. The rest of the mattress specifications vary, with some containing inches of memory foam, others are enveloped in a sumptuous knitted cover, and there are two-sided mattresses to provide a wide selection for shoppers. Hamilton & James, Deluxe Beds’ natural collection, has added a series of tartan fabrics in ocean blue, mustard yellow and a latte colour. These fabrics are available on a variety of headboards and bases, including the range’s new headboard shapes, bringing the opportunity to add an even more personal touch to each bed. An upgraded cover has also been added to the Hamilton & James Classic range for an extra touch of comfort. Deluxe Beds’ headboards and bases have been upgraded to include new fabrics, colours and styles. Four new base options are available, including an upholstered divan base. Its ottoman style bed base includes plenty of storage space, and the option for both a front and a side opening allows for even more customisation. Additionally, there is the choice of the sleigh bed base or the modern slatted base. Tel: 01484 427 373

Sleep in luxury Indulgent, comfortable beds from Hypnos Penthouse
Hypnos will once again bring the art of luxury bedmaking to the Bed Show where it will launch its latest collections for the retail market. ‘The past eight years have seen the business go from strength to strength, and we have enjoyed exceptional growth and expansion across the retail and hospitality markets in both the UK and around the world,’ says Chris Ward, Hypnos group marketing director. This year Hypnos was presented with the Queen’s Award for Enterprise for International Trade in the 2017 honours list in recognition of its commercial success in international business. To add to this achievement, it was also awarded the Manufacturing Guild Mark for its commitment to meeting the highest standards of British manufacturing, design and product quality. ‘These awards are recognition for our long-established reputation for

excellence in the luxury bed market, with high levels of customer satisfaction as a result. We’re looking forward to launching our latest innovations enabling retailers to offer their customers their dream bedroom environment, based on the supreme comfort and style of the beds we handcraft,’ he says. On show will be Hypnos’ new fabrics, headboards and finishing touches. The diverse range offers a wealth of choice in design, texture, colour and hue. Customers can achieve distinctly different bed looks in natural weaves, velvets and woollen textures, in vibrant jewel tones and shades inspired by the latest interiors trends. The company has redeveloped its popular Orthos Support Collection in response to demand for more naturally based, high performing products, which inherently help to keep customers comfortable.
Orthos provides firm support to help gently relieve back tension. The collection combines Hypnos’ trademarked ReActive spring technology with traditional hand-craftsmanship. The Orthos Support Elite Collection comprises four variants, each with their own unique feel and fillings; wool, silk, cashmere and alpaca, and finished with a natural cocona Belgian damask fabric in a stripe. The combination of both natural and 100% sustainable materials throughout the mattress helps to regulate body temperature and increases the breathability of the bed, ensuring luxury meets support and comfort as customers sleep and wake. Hypnos will also be introducing a storage solution. Presenting an abundance of accessible space, the large Easy-Store drawer boasts the equivalent volume of four standard drawers. Bringing the outdoors inside can have health benefits
Happiness is bringing the outside in Biophilia is becoming more of a design trend
In a world driven by industry and technology, our relationship with the natural world can sometimes take a back seat. In the face of this biophilia (the love of life or living things) is developing into a design trend. Biophilic design aims to integrate nature into architecture and interior design through natural materials and forms to create space that promotes wellness and positivity. ‘What it represents is becoming increasingly popular in the world of interior design. Today, many architects and designers are taking the necessary steps to bring the great outdoors back inside in a bid to re-establish our relationship with nature and all the benefits we draw from it. This is where the concept of biophilic design comes in,’ says David Bigland, Moduleo UK and Eire md.
‘There have been numerous studies to suggest the positive benefits of interacting with nature. Research shows that it can improve productivity, lower stress levels, enhance learning comprehension and increase recovery rates from illness. Let’s take a dull, uninspiring office with artificial light, which can make people feel low on energy. This is where biophilic design’s benefits reveal themselves, as studies show that directly accessing nature can alleviate feelings of stress, while enabling better focus, increasing mental stamina and productivity. The concept is directly linked to happiness and wellbeing,’ he explains. Exposure to natural daylight is also important to help elevate our moods and balance the melatonin hormone, which regulates sleep.
Biophilic design isn’t just an aestheticfocused concept aimed at designing spaces that harmonise more readily with nature. While this is partly the case, it is mainly implemented for functional purposes related to the physical and mental wellbeing of those who regularly interact with the environment. ‘Whether it’s a hectic office environment, busy reception or even a bar or restaurant location, there is no limit to the benefits of biophilic design. Designers need look no further than the convenience and authenticity of a luxury vinyl flooring solution that offers all the aesthetic benefits of bringing the great outdoors inside, while providing the necessary functionality required in commercial projects of today,’ adds Bigland. Hidden treasures There are lots of objects to find on Hayka’s bedlinen
KAROLINA BAK
I saw a mouse. Where? There, on the duvet may not have the same ring about it, but if you look at Hayka’s bedlinen and throws through a smart phone or tablet you can spot mice among its designs. Along with the mice, there is a ladybird, a lost coin and (obviously) a needle in the Straw design.

According to founder Gosia Dziembaj, owners love looking for objects hidden in the hay. Children enthusiastically react to all the animals: it is enough to show them a mouse, and then they want to find absolutely everything. Every bedlinen set is unique. The printed fabric goes to the sewing room where it is cut to size. At this stage, unique products are created and it is therefore practically impossible to find two identical sets of Hayka bedlinen. Production takes place entirely in Poland from local fabrics. The main idea behind the brand was to make the product 100% Polish from the design, through fabric, print and packaging. The bedding is 100% cotton with a satin weave. At this year’s European Product Design Awards, Hayka won a gold in the textiles category and a silver in the bedroom furniture and accessories category. Visit: www.hayka.eu

UPHOLSTERY Left and below: The high-backed Cloud LN6 and LN7 Bottom: The lowbacked Cloud LN2
Back to the future The backrests of &tradition’s sofas are as much a focal point as the seats If one thing unites &tradition’s upholstery designs (other than its Scandi styling) it is the backrest of the sofas: they demand attention rather than meekly accept you resting on them. The company has added two highbacked versions – LN6 and the larger LN7 – of its Cloud sofa (LN2), by Luca Nichetto. Designed to be spacious, the Italian-born, Sweden-based designer wanted to minimise anything voluminous and accentuate the look and feel of lightness. ‘When you are floating on a cloud, you are in your own world,’ explains Nichetto. ‘With the high-back versions of the sofa, you feel comfy, free and able to focus. Even the acoustics are more intimate. It is like having your own cloud up in the sky. It is a concept, but it is real. A private space you can share with others.’ ‘Everyone is drawn to the idea of floating on a cloud,’ says Martin Kornbek Hansen, &tradition ceo. ‘It is the quintessence of comfort. With the highback version of Cloud sofas Nichetto augments the impression of lightness both visually and experientially. At the same time, he expresses the concept of cosy, which is very close to our hearts. In Danish we call it hygge.’ ‚‚‚

UPHOLSTERY The Fly sofa by Space Copenhagen has been expanded with the introduction of a three-seater version (SC12). The Fly Series signals a sculptural approach to design without sacrificing comfort. Referencing classic Nordic aesthetic, details and techniques, seen in the slatted wood backrest, organic shapes and solid craftsmanship, the look is unmistakeably modern. In doing so, the series strikes a subtle balance between tradition and innovation, which &tradition champions as a brand. With the Fly three-seater, Space Copenhagen amplifies your experience of lounging and socialising with ease. Three enormous seat cushions invite you and anyone else you would like to be with to relax in absolute comfort, with all kinds of options as to the solid oak colours and types of upholstery. Rearrange the back cushions any way you like. Add a dog or cat, or curl up with a book or a cup of coffee, and you have all the creature comforts that make a house feel like a home – in a sofa. Nichetto and Oki Sato, founder of the Tokyo-based design studio Nendo, virtually co-created the modular Isole (NN1) via a process of exchanging ideas inspired by Japanese poetry. They instantly felt a kindred creative spirit when they first met over coffee in Tokyo. Defying the geographical distance between them, Sato and Nichetto subsequently found a new way to collaborate long distance, applying the concept behind Tanka, a traditional genre of Japanese poetry, where one person starts the poem and the other person completes it. ‘I was thinking of soft, organic forms like pebbles, stones, drops of water, islands,’ explains Sato. ‘But I had no idea how they could connect and become furniture. I did a sketch, took a photo with my iPhone and sent it to Luca.’ ‘I am from Venice so I know about

islands,’ says Nichetto. ‘When I saw the first sketch I realised that these islands needed bridges. So I designed the armature as a bridge to connect the islands into individual seats, and each seat into a modular sofa.’ Isole has a variety of combinations and configurations, including versions with and without an ‘island’ arm cushion. Variations include a discrete round, square or rectangular side table that integrates with the overall aesthetic. ‘Typically, modular sofas tend to be square, stiff and driven by functionality first,’ says Kornbek Hansen. ‘With the Isole, Nendo and Nichetto have brought beauty, balance and a sense of poetry to a design that feels cosy and friendly even before you sit in it. What’s more, the concept itself is very much aligned with our Danish appreciation of nature, alluding to pebbles and the ocean.’ In response to the successful relaunch of Arne Jacobsen & Flemming Lassen’s Mayor in 2012, &tradition has launched a two-seater version of the iconic sofa. Out of respect for the original design, the latest addition emphasises the classic and iconic shape and, of course, the buttoned back. With its modest dimensions of just 138cm in length, the sofa fits perfectly into smaller homes and spaces. The Mayor was introduced in 1939 in conjunction with Søllerød City Hall, also designed by Jacobsen and Lassen. Being responsible for the entire city hall’s aesthetic appearance, from the design of the entire building to furniture and small details such as door handles, they also designed a wedding room with accompanying furniture: including a sofa for the waiting area. Exploiting the symbolism of a ritual act, they created a universal design that shows a moderation of modernism and a unique regional adaption. Visit: www.andtradition.com

Winning ways Fibreline continues to invest to meet demand During the past 15 years Fibreline has positioned itself as a one stop shop for upholstery fillings, with foam, fibre and feather cushion products all made on one site in Keighley, West Yorkshire. It has been a winning formula that has seen it create and distribute the Encore range of combined filling cushion products. With increasing demand for value added products such as the Encore cushion range, and the ever-shortening lead times, Fibreline believes in-house control of the sewn case production is essential for meeting customer demand. Over the past few years it has undertaken a major project to increase
its in-house cut and sew capacity. This included the refurbishment of an existing building into which was installed 10,000sqft of mezzanine flooring to house the existing cutting and sewing facilities. All this was done while maintaining continuous production and keeping customers supplied. An additional state of the art CNC cutting machine was installed along with laying up equipment and extra sewing machines, resulting in a doubling of capacity. To provide more machinists, a Textile Sewing Academy within Keighley College is being set up with the aid of the Textile
Growth Fund. Starting in January it will help give Fibreline the capacity to meet increasing demand for its products. Established in 1982, it was one of the first companies to manufacture carded fibre cushions for the UK upholstery market. Over the years it has grown to be a leading supplier of not only polyester fibre, but also feather and foam and now spring cushions. As a manufacturer of all three fillings it has been at the leading edge of developing a range of combination fillings for designers trying to offer something different to the norm. 2mm hardboard panels compete with plastic sheeting, offering an anti-slip surface and a mesh structure that helps to remove dirt and grit while offering impact resistance. Gaskell Wool Rich will unveil Abbey Road and update its Kennington range with new colours. Making its Harrogate debut is Introducing Interiors. Launched in May, it brings products from North America and Italy. From Bois in Canada it has a range of distinctive hardwood flooring, complemented by a complete line of other naturally sourced products including eco-friendly energy logs. The company is also distributing eco-friendly adhesives, premium underlay and installation products that offer sound and moisture control from US company DriTac. Italian rug producer La Passatoia Milleusi’s rugs are also on offer. j2 Flooring will be introducing tile designs in four contemporary, large format styles and launching its Own Label concept, giving retailers exclusive LVT options. Manx Tomkinson will highlight two new wool ranges: Cadiz and Craven Twist, along with four additions to the Easy Living PP family – Antigua, Bahamas, Cuba and St Lucia. Unifloor Underlay Systems will demonstrate its Jumpax dual underlay system. Each of the six systems is designed to complement a specific type of floor finish or base floor situation. The two self-adhesive components are quickly and easily fitted as a free-floating subfloor, smoothing over typical irregularities and eliminating the need for screeds, primers, ply boards and nails. It is not necessary to remove old floor coverings, loose screeds or even surface contamination.

Art for floor’s sake Art Select Woods is being updated
Korlok by Karndean Designflooring, Warm Ash bedroom RKP8103

Interiors Monthly September 2017
Karndean Designflooring is set to unveil four wood designs to accommodate the growing trend for room to room floor designs as part of its updated Art Select Woods collection. Tapping into the constantly evolving trend for adding grey in the home, the multi-tonal grey hues of Storm Oak will be introduced to its premium Art Select collection in a matching full-length plank (1,219mm x 178mm), parquet (228mm x 76mm) and basket-weave (305mm x 76mm, 114mm x 114mm) format. With an existing Spring Oak full length plank and parquet design already available, the collection will also welcome a new Spring Oak basket-weave design. ‘These new designs are ideal for homeowners looking to achieve the same colour floor room to room with an alternative format or as a standalone rug effect to break up individual spaces. With traditional dark and rich brown tones already available as part of our Art Select Oak Royale collection, our new cool grey tone will be extremely popular with homeowners looking for a more contemporary feel,’ explains Scott Cochrane, Karndean Designflooring UK retail sales director. ‘Having the same design in three different formats will allow our independent retail network to impress homeowners with a new option for achieving a consistent feel throughout the home. We’re expecting room to room floor designs to become an even more popular trend going forward. ‘Likewise, we know traditional basket-weave effects are back in style and homeowners are often looking to pair them with parquet or full length designs. Our newest basket-weave designs are perfect for a statement hallway or highlighting key areas such as a dining space.’ Visitors will also get the opportunity to see Karndean’s rigid core collection, Korlok, with 12 authentic wood designs (1,420mm x 225mm) inspired by European and North American woods. Korlok can be installed over most existing hard surface floors or uneven subfloors without the worry of exposing any imperfections underfoot, thanks to its innovative K-Core technology. It features a 5G vertical click locking mechanism and pre-attached acoustic foam backing for quick and easy installation. It can also reduce noise transfer to rooms below up to 19dB, without the need for separate underlay, making it ideal for a busy playroom, home office, bedroom or loft conversion. ‘Unlike other rigid core products and click laminate flooring, Korlok can be scored and snapped for ease of installation like our established Gluedown and LooseLay ranges,’ he explains. The familiar click-locking system and enhanced core

technology means installers can achieve an authentic and luxurious floor in any space without the need for adhesive and with minimal subfloor preparation. It is ideal for families looking for less upheaval and disruption. ‘Importantly for our retailer network, Korlok offers a new flooring solution for any type of subfloor with a wide array of premium wood designs to choose from,’ he says. From the Danish inspired Baltic Washed Oak with its light grey undertones to Reclaimed Antique Oak with its historical markings, there are six oak designs to choose from in the collection, all suitable for contemporary, classic and traditional interiors. Tapping into the trend for Scandinavian inspired interiors, Korlok also features three ash designs: Warm, Washed Grey and Texas White, and one pine – Washed Swiss Pine – all boasting elegance and style. For a moody and impactful floor, American Black Walnut and Smoked Butternut are both hues with a mix of straight and flowery grain patterns for opulence. ‘The Flooring Show is the most prominent platform for us to unveil our new Art Select Woods update and Korlok collection. Our customers can expect to see new designs, POS and live demonstrations, as well as having the opportunity to meet with our team of dedicated retail business managers,’ adds Cochrane. Premium service Interfloor will show its latest flooring accessories ‘Retailers looking for a reliable and responsive supplier for all their flooring accessories should head to the Interfloor stand at this year’s show,’ says Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director. ‘As a UK manufacturer we continue to prioritise the highest levels of service for customers of our quality range of almost 1,000 flooring products and accessories from the market’s most trusted brands including Tredaire, Duralay, Gripperrods and Stikatak.’ New for 2017 is its range of Premium High Density underlays, introduced following rising demand for more luxurious flooring products suitable for use in all areas of the home. ‘The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new Premium High Density (PHD) range they can,’ he says. ‘The three products in the new PHD range are all 180kg per m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing. They all have excellent heat insulation properties and high acoustic ratings to reduce noise, plus they are made from 100% recycled foam.’

PHD Chromium 9mm, the standout PU underlay in the range, has high performance Textron backing to give it more dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as exceptional ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life. PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing, as featured on Tredaire Titanium, Flamecheck and FR7. This backing also helps increase dimensional stability, is resistant to tearing and is easy to cut and trim. ‘Consumers will love the high performance features of our new PHD underlays, while fitters can’t fail to be impressed with how easy it is to install. We’re sure the range will be a top choice for all areas of the home,’ adds Cowley. Interfloor will also unveil its Gripperrods branded metals range which will make it easier for customers to choose genuine products, giving them a quality guarantee and total peace of mind. True master EIR and digital printing is helping Balterio achieve its ‘natural’ look It has always been Balterio’s aim to develop laminate floors that look and feel like real parquet. ‘Over the years, Balterio has become a true master in reproducing nature in all its aspects. One of the main techniques to reproduce that natural look is the embossed-inregister process in which the top structure matches the wood design perfectly. The new oaks in Tradition Quattro are best in class in EIR: they offer a deep and matt EIR surface structure in combination with a four-sided V-groove,’ says Franky Terrijn, Balterio marketing manager. Another technology Balterio has invested in recently is digital printing. ‘Laminate has never been so realistic: it is virtually impossible to distinguish digital printed laminate from authentic parquet, while the surface structure feels as genuine. And there is more variation in the patterns and the planks too,’ he says. The 2.05m long plank Grande collection, available in two widths, is the first digital printed Balterio collection that is also waterproof, so can be installed in kitchens and bathrooms. ‘The subtle four-sided parquet bevel on Grande makes this collection look just like parquet. If consumers are looking for a laminate floor that is more daring, more out of the box, then they should choose Xpressions. The digital printed Xpressions laminate floors will stand out in any home: choose from a classic herringbone to a checked pattern,’ adds Terrijn. Visit: www.balterio.co.uk

Metro offers a design service for interior and exterior signage
Independent labels Metro’s own label products are worth over £20m Since 1979, the key aim for Metro has been the ability to pool buying power to compete against the national chains that can dominate the marketplace. What has been developed is a group of independent retailers from the smallest one-man operation to multiple-outlet businesses. Retaining independence is important to Metro members so participation in group activity is always optional. This allows them to use all of the best benefits of group membership while being 100% in control. Most members appreciate the option to discuss with other like-minded retailers the problems and issues they encounter. In biannual area meetings members can talk freely about issues that affect their business and gain support and advice from retailers who have nothing to lose by sharing information. Own labelling and branding has become a huge success for

the group with its own brand Carpet 1st which is worth over £20m. There are nearly 300 Carpet 1st products that are selected for their appeal, quality and value. Group-wide terms are negotiated that are designed to increase members’ profits. Metro has become much more than simply a £50m buying group. Assisting members with marketing has been a key goal and it provides a comprehensive service encompassing all aspects of bespoke marketing services from a price card to full size external signage. This unique service includes Metro’s own marketing and merchandising vehicle with design, print and fitting equipment. Temptation TCS will have show offers for customers alongside new products TCS The Carpet Specialists is looking forward to exhibiting at Harrogate so that it can show off its latest offerings. Armed with developments and products for 2017, it is enthusiastic for what always promises to be a great show for the company. Now in its third year, TCS will bring its collections and retailer focused POS, along with some exclusive offers to independent flooring retailers. All of this year’s collections are based around what the customers have been asking for: a mix of textures, materials, colours and patterns all chosen and designed based on current market trends. Everything on display has been designed around the independent retailer where the collections can be supplied by the roll or as cut lengths, eliminating warehousing and carrying large levels of stock. To exclusively benefit visitors to the stand, a series of offers will be available including reduced cut length prices for retailers looking for hassle-free carpet sales. For larger retailers interested in roll sales the company is offering free full rolls with every order of three rolls from its collections at the show. This year has seen the company reach 1,000 retailers. To encourage new retailers, TCS is also offering a free POS floor display with orders of four rolls or more. For flooring customers that are expanding into the mattress market, orders of three Royal Coil mattresses will receive a fourth free. Visit: www.tcsthecarpetspecialists.com

Growth and development Ulster Carpets is investing in the future Next year will mark 80 years of manufacturing for Ulster Carpets, which is showing no signs of slowing down. Dedicated to producing the finest Axminster and Wilton carpets, its focus on innovation and investment has resulted in it expanding its operations in recent years despite a decline in the UK carpet manufacturing industry. While tough trading and financial periods have seen many competitors move operations abroad, Ulster’s long term strategy and proactive business approach has enabled it to ensure manufacturing and all operations remain at home. In the past few months alone it has created 20 jobs, providing a welcome boost to the local economy. The company’s ethos is centred on growth and development, of which investment in infrastructure plays a huge role. As part of a £35m regeneration of all woven manufacturing facilities at its Northern Ireland headquarters, last year

saw the completion of a state of the art dyehouse and energy centre, designed to improve energy efficiency and reduce the company’s carbon footprint. The remaining phases of the redevelopment are to be rolled out in the coming years. In terms of trading, Ulster’s residential market continues to flourish with last month seeing the launch of its latest loop collection Habitus. The Danish inspired collection, which sits beside the Open Spaces range, answers the consumer demand for durable yet tactile products and adds a new variety to its residential collections. The next few months will also see additions to some of its most popular Axminster ranges: Beaumont, Braeburn and Tazmin, which emphasises its commitment to developing the product offering and establishing Ulster as market leader. It is the commitment to growth and development that has allowed the company to maintain its edge after all
these years, according to Nick Coburn, Ulster group md and deputy chairman. ‘Our continued focus on innovation and investment has allowed us to grow and maintain our competitive advantage in the marketplace. A family owned but professionally managed business, we are committed to operating as a vertically self- sufficient company, maximising our control over the entire manufacturing process, from the selection and purchase of the wool to the final checking of every piece of carpet prior to shipment. ‘It is this “from sheep to floor” mentality, along with the determination to concentrate all operations within this country that sets Ulster Carpets apart from the competition. Our emphasis on progression and dedication to delivering top quality products will ensure we continue to strengthen our position as a premium carpet brand in the years to come,’ he adds. Windows of opportunity Rol-lite Blinds returns to Harrogate Rol-lite Blinds has manufactured made to measure blinds since 1973. Much has changed over those 44 years of trading, from no-drill systems to blinds that operate from your mobile phone, the choices available for the home owner are vast. Innovation is echoed in the manufacturing side of the business, where each workstation has its own touchscreen giving detailed product requirements and on/off job scanning. The latest and safest in aluminium and fabric cutting technology is prevalent, allowing for a responsible approach to manufacturing. Light rigs and stringent quality control checks are in place to ensure products are manufactured to high standards. Rol-lite has an in-house technical support team to assist with any technical or surveying issues as well as a field based team of area managers. ‘With the increased popularity of motorised

blinds and home automation, never before has this support aspect of the business been so crucial. This technical support helps to reinforce a strong relationship with their customers and ensure that they are confident in offering higher-end products,’ says Paul Swanson, Rol-lite marketing manager. ‘Window blinds offer a fantastic opportunity to generate extra revenue for flooring companies as there is no stock holding involved. Sample books and display blinds are also relatively inexpensive, which limits the financial risk involved. Many home owners refresh their window furnishings at a similar time to changing their carpets or flooring, so why turn down the opportunity of an additional order,’ says Swanson. This will be the third consecutive year Rol-lite has exhibited at the show. Visit: www.rol-lite.co.uk

Six of the best
Finalists in the NICF Carpet Fitter of the Year competition face their final tasks on 17-18 September in the King’s Suite
Mark Smurthwaite received the 2016 award from Anthea Turner and judge Ian James
Darren Ash, Alfrick, Worcestershire ‘I have been fitting carpets and flooring and running my own successful business for over 30 years. I started my flooring career straight from school having spent many a school holiday helping out and learning the basics. My father was my mentor and instilled in me the importance of always doing the best job possible and leaving the customer satisfied: wise words which certainly made an impression on me. I joined the NICF in 2014 and successfully took the Master Fitter exams. I soon realised the benefits the additional NICF qualifications brought in setting myself apart from all the other carpet fitters around. I currently hold the Master Fitter qualification in both carpet and domestic vinyl as well an NVQ in carpet fitting. I am very proud to be a finalist for the second consecutive year as I feel there is some unfinished business.’
more than my job, it is a passion of mine. It has always been one of my lifelong ambitions to compete in Carpet Fitter of the Year.’
Jason Draper, Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire ‘I’ve been in the flooring trade since my first job in a shop aged 15. I was in charge of making tea, tidying the shop and general warehousing duties. I started helping carpet fitters soon after and this is where I discovered an interest in the job. From there I joined a team full-time in 2001 and soon after was on my own fitting carpets in local domestic and commercial properties. I joined the NICF two years ago and am a Master Fitter in LVT and laminate. I attend regular courses to keep up to date with new ideas and developments to provide my customers with the best value and the best finish to their jobs. It’s a great achievement to be in the final and I hope that we can all contribute to raising the profile of the trade.’
Byron Terrett, Llantwit Major, Vale of Glamorgan ‘My career in floor laying spans over 29 years. My parents owned an interior design business and before leaving school I had made the decision that I would pursue a career in floorcoverings. I have gone on to achieve my NICF Master Fitter qualifications (carpet and laminate), Quick-Step Master Fitter (laminate, hardwood and vinyl categories), Karndean approved installer and obtained a NVQ level 2 in textile and resilient floorcoverings. I take great pride in what I do and have begun to focus on transferring those skills to others. As the main fitter within the family-run business I have begun upskilling our fitting teams. I was fortunate to make and take part in the Carpet Fitter of the Year 2016, which was a huge opportunity and great privilege.’
Dan Evans, Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire ‘I have been part of the flooring trade since the age of 14. I started out working alongside family members and soon realised that this was what I wanted to pursue as my career. I now run my own successful business where I fit all different kinds of floorcoverings, especially enjoying the challenge of bespoke designs. I attended my first FITA course in 2008 where I then got a taste for further training. It opened my mind to new and different ways of doing the job in the best way possible. Since then I have undertaken numerous courses and have achieved Master Fitter in carpet, LVT and laminate. Flooring is

Rob Harper, Wigan, Greater Manchester ‘I’ve been involved in flooring now for 15 years and worked up from the bottom. I’ve seen much while I’ve been involved in the industry. With a background in the motor trade, I was amazed when I started that apparently no formal training or certification is required. I found the NICF and began looking into ways to improve. I’ve worked hard to get somewhere in this industry, and I’ve advanced to a point where I had the confidence to enter a national competition and made it to the final. I couldn’t have done it without embracing training. The proudest moment of my career is right now.’
John Wright, Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire ‘I’ve been a carpet and floor layer for 26 years. The moment I walked into the first house I actually found a job I love. I feel as passionate now as I did then. Since then I’ve done my best to keep up to date with all training and product knowledge. Since joining the NICF it’s given me even more passion to learn and provide the exceptional service that our trade truly can offer. When I first saw Carpet Fitter of the Year in the early 1990s it was always something I aspired to do. To progress to the final was an amazing feeling, yet extremely nerve racking.’

New Penthouse Carpets Sales Representative is a Capital Success The summer months have been productive at Penthouse Carpets; we’ve been busy bringing new team member Sue Chapman up to speed. Sue joined our sales-force team in June, and will be working with retailers in Essex, Hertfordshire, and North & East London. She’s a picture-perfect example of the type of person we love to have on our team – hard-working, customer servicefocused and very experienced. We’re delighted to have her on board! Sue’s extensive experience ranges from high-end retailer Selfridges to sales and merchandising with Hallmark and Paperlink, making her perfectly-placed to deliver the excellent customer service Penthouse Carpets prides itself upon. Much of Sue’s career has been spent on the road in London – she knows every nook & cranny of our great capital; our North & East London-based retailers can have confidence in her finding them with no problems. And living in Essex with children at school in Hertfordshire means she’s just as knowledgeable about her Home County routes. Sue is equally enthusiastic about joining the Penthouse Carpets sales team; she told us “working for an employee-owned organisation gives the atmosphere at Penthouse Carpets an edge. It’s such a nice team”. And with comments like that, we’re thrilled – a happy team means happy customers, which can only be good for everyone’s business. If you’d like a visit from Sue, you can book in with her directly. Just call her on 07801 538763 or drop her an email on sue.chapman@penthousecarpets.co.uk.
