EDITOR’S COMMENT

Andrew Kidd EDITOR

Not all doom and gloom It’s not just politicians who are having to rethink things: shoppers seem to be suffering from postgeneral election blues Interiors retailers always hate elections, because as soon as one is called consumers defer big-ticket purchases, even if the opinion polls suggest a clear result is on the cards. There was plenty of evidence from flooring suppliers that the sales tap had been turned off in April (things had been going well in the first quarter). But, according to DFS, it has spread to upholstery: the ‘trading environment has recently weakened beyond our expectation with significant declines in store footfall leading to a material reduction in customer orders. We believe these demand effects are market-wide,’ it warned investors, who responded by promptly dropping the shares. Of course, June’s hot weather didn’t help

footfall, with sales reports from John Lewis clearly showing that consumers preferred enjoying their gardens to going shopping, unless you were selling fans or garden furniture. The usual expectation is that after an election shopping returns to normal: after all Mrs Smith still needs that new hall carpet, wardrobe or sofa. However, the failure of the Conservatives to secure a House of Commons majority, combined with what that could mean for Brexit negotiations, and a drifting housing market, has also impacted on people. The YouGov/CEBR Consumer Confidence Index fell from 109.1 the week before the election to 105.2 in the 12 days after (anything over 100 is positive). This may sound like terrible news but it needs to be put into context: YouGov says consumers are ‘resilient’ about job security over the next year. As the Index sunk to 70 in 2008 and didn’t fully recover until 2013, it’s been worse. Many thanks to all of you who voted in the Interiors Monthly Awards 2017. I can’t wait to reveal who you chose in next month’s issue.

NEWS

Victoria to move production from Kidderminster plant… Victoria Group is to end carpet production at Kidderminster while Brintons is moving Axminster production from the town to its overseas plants. Victoria said the move was part of a manufacturing reorganisation to improve efficiency and margins ‘due to rapid growth and continued significant demand for its products.’ Some 66 staff are set to be made redundant. Philippe Hamers, Victoria Group ceo, reviewed its manufacturing facilities and decided that moving production to Westex Carpets and Abingdon Flooring will increase production capacity and profitability. The move will ‘rationalise manufacturing operations to drive further incremental margin uplift and optimise asset utilisation and positively impact manufacturing efficiency to provide significant – and much needed – additional capacity without material capital expenditure,’ said the company. Its Midlands distribution centre is to be closed and warehousing moved to Kidderminster. The Kidderminster site was sold and leased back in 2014 but will continue to house the head office, product development, and showroom. A new distribution centre will open to the north west of London by late 2018 to service the south of the UK, followed by a centre in North East England. ‘The successful growth of Victoria has enabled the group to reassess how best to utilise its manufacturing and logistics capabilities. By reorganising our manufacturing and logistics operations, we will continue to grow Victoria’s earnings per share and free cashflow,’ said Geoff Wilding, Victoria executive chairman. ‘We have done this before, of course. Shareholders will no doubt recall our manufacturing rationalisation in Australia in 2014, which was highly successful with resultant revenue growth and improvement in margins that have been very pleasing. Additionally, we remain confident that further significant earnings-accretive acquisition growth, in

Victoria has been at Kidderminster since 1900

addition to underlying organic development, can be achieved to create further shareholder value.’ Gavin Miller, regional secretary at the Community Trade Union, said he would be seeking urgent talks with Victoria. ‘This news comes as another devastating blow to Community members and was unexpected. We will be seeking urgent talks with management to address the announcement, our aim is to preserve as many jobs as possible and I would call on the company to make a commitment to honour voluntary redundancy applications at the end of this process.’ Victoria also said current trading was positive. ‘The group continues to trade well. Completion of the integration of recent acquisitions in the UK, the Netherlands, and Australia, has ensured that the group’s underlying profits before tax will be well ahead of last year and the board is confident of meeting market expectations for the financial year ending 31 March 2018. Reshaping the group will achieve meaningful cost and margin synergies, freeing up capital for further domestic and international earnings enhancing acquisitions.’

…as Brintons looks abroad for Axminster manufacturing Brintons has started a 30-day consultation period with the 60 production employees affected by the proposal to move Axminster manufacturing overseas. If the roles are ended, production jobs will fall to 53, alongside 89 at its head office. The company said between 10 and 15 staff could transfer to its Telford operation. ‘Brintons operates in an extremely competitive global marketplace. In order

6

Interiors Monthly July 2017

to maintain and strengthen our position as one of the world’s leading suppliers of bespoke carpets, it is vital we constantly review our business operations and are able to respond to prevailing trading conditions. We will, where possible, offer new employment opportunities at our Telford plant. The proposed restructure is part of our long-term strategy to safeguard the company’s future interests,’ said Rob Greenfield, Brintons group manufacturing and logistics director.

Brintons said its Stourport Road site in Kidderminster remained an important location within the group. It will continue to house the dyeing plant, which supplies coloured yarn to the European production facilities, Wilton weaving, warehousing and distribution of residential carpets, and the head office. Unions had previously warned that the company was looking to move production to its lower cost overseas facilities.

Stain Away Collection

Soaraway StainAway

You won’t find the word ‘soaraway’ in your

dictionary. But then you won’t find the word ‘StainAway’ there either. It’s our patented brand

name for one of the most successful stain resistant carpets on the market anywhere in the world. And

‘soaraway’ describes it well because, ever since its launch way back in the 1990s', its sales have soared

into the Associated Weavers hall of fame – making

it the most popular choice for our selected retailers. Just to refresh your memory – if you want your carpet to remain as pristine as it looks in this photograph, StainAway is the obvious choice for

people who suffer from messy children, messy pets or any other grubby activities that could ruin the look of their new carpet.

Cleanable luxury for years and years StainAway’s bleach-cleanable 100% polypropylene construction is the secret of its success. That’s why

we’ve awarded the range with 10-, 15- or 20-year stain and wear warranties. The thoroughly hard-

wearing pile makes the StainAway brand ideal for

any room in the house, from a child’s playroom to a smart dining or living room.

New shades of autumn

With autumn just around the corner, we’ll soon be

appreciating the need for quality and luxury

underfoot during the muddy season. We’ve chosen

this year’s colourings with care. Most of the new

ranges feature 16 tempting colour choices, ranging from Mellow Mocha to Frosted Dawn – names that

are evocative of the passing seasons, yet styles that are versatile enough to fit snugly into virtually any room décor.

Planned recolourings to reach your store soon include StainAway Harvest Heathers, a 1148gm

twist; StainGuard Harvest Heathers, a 1690gm twist; cut-pile StainGuard Saxony, a heavy wear

domestic with 20-year stain and wear warranty; and StainAway Twist with 1020gm pile.

stain & wear warranty

Make the most of summer You’ll already have seen our additions and

improvements coming into your stores. Now is the time to give your customers even greater choices

in the enviable StainAway collections. Launched this spring, new offerings have included tough soft cut-pile saxonies Bellaire (1020gm), Promenade (1525gm), and Sophistication (2220gm). Completing

the line-up are cut-pile saxony Temptation at

2050gm and Tuftex Twist, as tough as it sounds, but with a mere 700gm pile weight. But then all

StainAway carpets are tough enough to take the wear, yet not to show it. Contact your area

CMA sounds alarm bells on price fixing for lighting The lighting industry has been told by the Competition and Markets Authority that it suspects suppliers are engaging in resale price maintenance. It has written warning letters to a number of lighting suppliers ‘where there are reasonable grounds to suspect they may be engaging in RPM.’ The move follows a fine of £2.7m for Endon and Saxby brand owner National Lighting Company for imposing a minimum price on online sellers, who then had to retail products at, or above, this price. NLC tried to avoid detection by not committing agreements to writing. Prices were imposed on Saxby products from 31 October 2012 to 25 February 2013 and on Endon from 31 May 2013 to 15 June 2016. The fine includes an extra penalty because the company ignored an earlier warning letter from the CMA. A warning letter may be sent when the CMA has reasonable grounds to suspect anti-competitive behaviour. It is not a formal allegation but must be taken seriously

10

and requires a considered response. ‘This decision should act as a warning to companies that resale price maintenance is illegal and that warning letters issued by the CMA are to be taken seriously and not to be ignored. The digital economy is booming and with so many businesses operating online it is vital that fair competition is maintained across all sectors. The CMA wants to ensure consumers get a fair price and a good deal. That can only happen when retailers are free to set their own prices,’ said Ann Pope, CMA senior director, antitrust. While NLC’s fine was increased for ignoring the CMA’s warning letter, it also benefited from a 30% reduction to the fine because it applied for and was granted leniency. An additional 20% reduction was applied because NLC voluntarily entered into settlement with the CMA. The fine also included a small reduction as a result of NLC agreeing to implement a comprehensive compliance programme. The CMA also has the power to fine retailers who enter into RPM agreements with suppliers.

MSIF boost for GoodWeave

Good start

GoodWeave, the anti-child and forced labour rug labelling scheme, has received a major funding boost from the Modern Slavery Innovation Fund. The non-governmental organisation is to receive about £600,000 over the next two years from MSIF enabling it to rollout its operations into new product sectors. MSIF was set up following the introduction of the Modern Slavery Act 2015. It helps to pay for projects to stop child slavery in factories supplying products to this country and work to identify and disrupt key human trafficking routes to the UK used by organised crime gangs. GoodWeave has made major inroads into reducing child labour by 80% in the South Asian rug industry since its inception in 1995. The grant will allow GoodWeave to fast-track developments into other manufacturing sectors in India and Nepal and help more UK companies establish a real-time map of their supply chains, from factories right down to home workers. The flotation of Balta Group got off to a steady start on the Euronext Brussels. At the time of writing, shares were €12.50, up €0.26 on its 14 June flotation price. ‘This important milestone in Balta’s history will enable our company to realise its growth ambitions to become a world leader in soft flooring. We will now continue to be at the forefront of innovation and operational excellence in order to keep creating value for our customers, employees and shareholders,’ said Tom Debusschere, Balta Group ceo.

engagement with leading UK companies and brands in the rug, embellished clothing, home textiles and jewellery sectors, and spearhead the setting up of accurate mapping of their supply chains. This will highlight where child and forced labour exists among their existing producers and subcontractors. It also wants to advance the adoption of the GoodWeave labelling scheme and introduce a digital platform to collate and present the results of audits and inspections to GoodWeave partners.

V4 investment Flooring company V4 Woodflooring is to invest £3m in a design centre and business start-up units. The company has been granted planning permission to build a 6,000sqft showroom and office extension to its warehousing at Greenbays Park, Woking. In addition, 15 start-up units will be built on the site, in three blocks, to encourage new businesses, investment and job creation.

DFS: sales fall is across the board DFS saw its stock market value plunge by more than a fifth after it warned that trading had ‘weakened beyond expectation’ and profits would be hit. The upholstery chain’s share price fell by 22% after it told investors while it had expected a ‘softer market environment in the second half’ of its financial year ‘the trading environment has however recently weakened beyond our expectation, with significant declines in store footfall leading to a material reduction in customer orders. ‘We believe these demand effects are market-wide, in line with industry indicators, and are linked to customer uncertainty regarding the general election and the uncertain macroeconomic environment. As stated previously, the upholstery market does see short-term demand fluctuations from time to time, within an overall historical

trend of long-term growth,’ it said. Driven by these short-term revenue effects, it now anticipates EBITDA over the full year to be lower than market expectations for the current year, and in the range of £82m-£87m, compared to last year’s £94.4m. DFS has maintained its investment in the business and is confident it will outperform the market over the longer term, driven by its scale, business model and proven growth levers. ‘We believe our expectations for the next financial year are realistic based on consumer confidence remaining broadly in line with current levels, given its consequent impact on upholstery demand. We expect continued strong cash generation that has allowed the recent announcement of a £20m special dividend in addition to our ordinary dividend,’ said the company.

Mattressman expands in Norfolk Mattressman owner Andrew Kerry has added to his retail network with the acquisition of a Norfolk flooring, upholstery and beds business. Kerry has bought Thetford retailer Cosy Carpets from Ricky and Paul Baker, who founded the company in 1992. ‘It’s a fantastic business and well set up and has great synergy with my other companies. I love my job and I’m very

hands on, and for me this is really exciting,’ said Kerry. The staff at the 15,000sqft store have been retained. As well as Mattressman, which has 21 stores in the UK and an ecommerce operation, Kerry owns the Kerrys department store in Lowestoft and Kerrys carpet store in North Walsham, Norfolk.

The winner will work for Sainsbury’s Home

Sainsbury’s backs talent Graduate design show New Designers is being sponsored by Sainsbury’s Home, with the winner working for the retailer for a year. In week one of the two week show (28 June – 1 July and 5-8 July) the winner of the New Designers Sainsbury’s Home Award will receive £500 and mentoring from the Sainsbury’s Home design team. The winner will also be shortlisted with six other designers to become Sainsbury’s Home Young Designer of the Year and take up the role of junior designer at Sainsbury’s Home for a year. ‘We design over 80% of our products in-house and currently have a ceramicist, illustrator and watercolour artist, alongside textile and 3D design experts in our team to bring our designs to life. I can’t wait to view the collections on exhibit and ultimately welcome a rising star into our ranks. I myself started my career back at New Designers in 1997 so this is incredibly close to my heart,’ said Andrew Tanner, Sainsbury’s Home design manager.

SERVICE

Richard Renouf

Nature’s way Products must be used properly ‘It must be the wood, it’s faulty.’ The customer pointed to the place where the flooring had lifted by 150mm in front of the hearth. ‘I bet it was not dried properly and it’s lifted because it’s dried out in my home.’ I’m sure there was a logical thought process behind his comments, but the customer, who had installed the flooring himself, misunderstood how wood behaves. When it dries, it shrinks. When it expands, it’s because it has taken on moisture. So if a floor lifts, it’s because the home has more moisture than the flooring did when it was new. Wood is a natural material, so it can’t be faulty in itself. But how it’s processed and turned into furniture or flooring, and how it’s installed, can cause issues. We use other natural materials: wool for carpets, stone for furniture and worktops, other natural fibres for soft furnishings and even bamboo (a grass, not wood). With all of these materials, you can’t change their natural characteristics, so you have to use them

in a way that takes these characteristics into account. Wood is dried and then joined in ways that allow some movement if the moisture content changes. Wool is often treated to deter pests who see it as their natural food and nesting material. Stone? I’ve been surprised recently by three examples of the same problem caused because the installers did not take into account how heavy it is. The first was a stone-topped island unit in a kitchen that had been fitted on top of some laminate flooring. You might as well have nailed the flooring in place. Around the island the flooring was lifting and the joints were being crushed as the compression forces caused by expansion forced each board into the next. Then the sinking worktop. Almost 100mm lower down the wall than when it had been fitted, leaving the splashback clinging to the wall with a large gap underneath. When I removed the plinths the carcase sides had been pushed downwards because the fitters had not

Worktops dropped in height because the units were unable to take their weight

20

Interiors Monthly July 2017

fitted the feet the right way round, and the side support lip was not under the side panels. And then the same thing again with a peninsular run of units. This time the units had not been fixed to the floor nor braced against the walls so it was tipping away from the wall under the weight. In each case the installers were surprised and confounded by what had happened. If they’d only seen how many people it took to lift in the worktops, I think their surprise would have been that the units were managing to stay up at all. When it comes to materials we are not so familiar with, such as bamboo, it’s more important than ever to follow the installation and care instructions closely. Once again, the entries were equally diverse, from contract to retail, from residential to hospitality and workplace, as were the applicants themselves. Chairing the judging process for the third year was a great honour, and watching the great minds in our industry critique the great output of British design was a real pleasure,’ says Alexander Gifford, Design Guild Mark chairman. ‚‚‚

BEDS AND BEDROOM The Air Cleaning System uses photocatalytic oxidation to eliminate polluting substances, bacteria and mildew

Breath of fresh air Lema’s latest development cleans the air Lema’s made to measure Armadio al Centimetro wardrobe range revolutionises the concept of wardrobes, taking them from mere passive storage units to active players in the sanitisation of their contents. Along with new finish and internal options, the range offers an innovative patented Air Cleaning System: the result of Officinadesign Lema research carried out in collaboration with engineering departments of several Italian universities.

28

Interiors Monthly July 2017

Fitted invisibly to the top of the wardrobe, the system decontaminates and significantly removes bacteria and odours from whatever is stored inside. This is designed to tackle the impact of pollution, especially for those who live in large cities. The exclusive Lema device, covered by the Air Control patent, uses Dust Free photocatalytic oxidation technology (developed for the sanitisation of aerospace environments) which, once activated, generates a photochemical

reaction thanks to the interaction of nanotechnology and a special UV lamp. With the help of a natural active ingredient, polluting substances, bacteria and mildew are eliminated, thereby purifying the wardrobe interior and removing more than 90% of unpleasant odours that collect on clothing, shoes and other items stored there. The technology is certified by the Italian Ministry of Health as a medical product. Visit: www.lemamobili.com

The need for sleep Consequences of too little sleep should not be ignored

The new Pocket 3000 mattress combines three of Mammoth’s technologies

While Lady Thatcher said she was happy with four hours sleep a night, today’s experts in the fields of sleep and mental health would argue that the effects of too little sleep can be dangerously farreaching. According to data gleaned by the Great British Sleep Survey, supported by the University of Oxford, about half of the UK population struggle to sleep, while around 30% report symptoms associated with sleep deprivation. Causing problems with mental health, physical performance and mental agility, the effects of sleep deprivation are wideranging. Dr Jonathan Bloomfield, Mammoth sports scientist and human performance specialist, believes that the benefits of good sleep are profound. ‘I can’t under-state the importance of good sleep in general life. The Great British Sleep Survey has shown that a lack of sleep can cause feelings of helplessness, loneliness, a struggle to concentrate, problems within relationships and low mood. Hormones released during sleep help our body to recover from the strains of our everyday life and enable us to strengthen our muscles to prevent any potential injuries and stresses. Without a good night’s sleep, our body simply can’t prepare itself to perform at its best every day.’

36

Interiors Monthly July 2017

Research into sleep is ongoing

Dr Jonathan Bloomfield

With almost 70% of bad sleepers claiming that bodily discomfort is the major factor in insomnia, increasing numbers of people are now turning to higher specification mattresses to help. Founded over 10 years ago by John Tuton, Mammoth’s everyday ethos is grounded around a firm belief that achieving the best night’s sleep is key to better health and wellbeing. Tuton drew on his experience in the healthcare industry to invent Medical Grade Foam, which is designed to respond instantly to the weight and shape of the human body. This allows the sleeper to attain the perfect neutral position, providing a cool, dry and comfortable sleeping surface

night after night, and is endorsed by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy as an aid to sleep and postural support. ‘As winner of the NHS Innovations North, Bright Ideas in Health Award 2016, Mammoth offers retailers a product unlike anything else. And this claim isn’t just our opinion. It’s been proven by tests carried out at the world-leading Northumbria University Sleep Research Centre which have shown to help customers fall asleep 29% faster and provide a longer and more restful night’s sleep, with subjects reporting a 21% more enjoyable experience on a Mammoth mattress,’ says Tuton. Luminess is debuting its range of floor and table lamps on stand A1 at the Manchester Furniture Show, and it has some stunning designs it guarantees you will not have seen before. ‘LED is allowing manufacturers to move away from traditional shades and bases and to bring to market some fantastically sculptural shapes,’ says Ian Dormer, Luminess director. ‘We bring in products from European manufacturers who have different styling influences and it’s definitely working for us. In fact, the market seems to be coming to us as we have some of the latest LED products and the public’s acceptance of this technology is massive and unstoppable. Currently, our bestselling LED table lamp is an abstract, free flowing LED strip of light that retails at around £240 and a healthy margin; we can deliver it within 48 hours and in singles – no long lead times and no need for large commitments.’ Luminess’s growth is being driven by progressive furniture retailers who have seen the opportunity of making additional sales, but the company knows it has to be different to succeed – see its ranges and make up your own mind.

LVT

Hot for the kitchen The heart of the home is a key driver of LVT sales

Da Vinci Stone, Eisen CER13

Statement Style The newest area of the home to embrace geometrics is the floor. Geometric patterns can look modern, retro or traditional, depending on their style, colour and design; and they can range from subtle to ultra-bold with intriguing shapes such as hexagons, cubes or triangles. Three-dimensional floorcoverings are starting to play a starring role in kitchen interiors, and the new Kaleidoscope collection can help customers embrace this. Both three-dimensional designs, Cubix and Pennon, can be paired with clean lines and minimal styling to create a striking interior. Whereas Cubix is perfect for kitchens of any size or shape, Pennon is ideal for larger or open plan kitchens where the floor is the focus.

Industrial Luxe A constantly evolving trend in kitchen interiors is the industrial look incorporating weathered steel-effect flooring against exposed brickwork or metallic tiles. One way to subtly achieve the look is with flooring. Whereas the rusted effect of Da Vinci Molten has been popular in bathrooms, the darker tones and subtle patterning of Da Vinci Eisen has been a big hit in industrial styled kitchens.

Classic Parquetry A timeless classic in flooring. Despite the versatility of parquet flooring with several laying patterns available, herringbone remains a top trend for this year. Interestingly, Art Select Blond Oak parquet is popular for making small kitchens look and feel more spacious. Blond shades are also one to watch, as they are now second to grey floors in popularity. Visit: www.karndean.com

With the kitchen being one of the most integral rooms of the home for generating floor sales of LVT, Stella Coyle, Karndean Designflooring retail sales manager, highlights the top five trends. Health and wellbeing More so than ever, acoustic comforts can play an important role in the selection process, especially for customers living in multi-level or townhouse homes with a kitchen above. The floor can make a big difference by reducing noise transfer to rooms below. Customers interested in acoustics are often looking for a convenient, quick-fit floorcovering with less upheaval, meaning less disruption to everyday life. Karndean’s first rigid core collection, Korlok, can be the answer.

Korlok by Karndean Designflooring, Baltic Mistral Oak RKP8112

Extra Impact As an alternative to a striking design or colourway, customers can look to add impact with extra-large planks and tiles. Again, offering a quick and easy installation, LooseLay Longboard can be the solution for popular open plan kitchen spaces with its unique 1,500mm x 250mm plank design. It is waterproof and compatible with underfloor heating. Importantly, a plank can be easily replaced if it is damaged.

Create zones to highlight furniture

Systems such as Moduleo Moods encourage mixing and matching

Up to 50% of Moduleo tiles consist of recycled materials

Customer satisfaction Demand from commercial projects is driving innovation in products ‘Harry Gordon Selfridge’s 1909 expression that “the customer is always right” is as prevalent as ever. Regardless of whether it’s a new build or refurbishment project, customer requirement is what drives a project and dictates what is and what isn’t specified. Budget is of course a vital element, however, recent innovations in product development and construction techniques mean that budgets can be maximised with new materials’, says David Bigland, Moduleo UK and Eire md. LVT’s popularity has increased in recent years and it can provide many benefits versus its natural counterparts. Manufactured with state of the art technology, embossed and cut-inregister processes give depth and tactility to planks to make them extremely realistic. Featuring grain, knots and grooves, the design fully matches the surface texture, so you can feel the structure and depth of the product.

42

Interiors Monthly July 2017

Where budgets are capped, but quality is required, LVT can offer a stylish alternative to natural products. Rather than using partitions, zoned flooring can provide dedicated spaces for various uses. For example, zoning works well in the hospitality sector for differentiating between the restaurant and bar, or in an office setting areas can easily be separated by alternative patterns or colourways. ‘Modern flooring systems, such as Moduleo Moods, encourage a mix and match offering which enable specifiers to compile a floor from various collections. For example, a statement piece of furniture or specific spot can be showcased with a surrounding pattern, complemented by other planks,’ says Bigland. ‘For projects where fit out timescales are tight, flooring that can be installed quicker versus its natural counterparts, such as Moduleo Click products, will help

ensure the scheme can be occupied quickly to the benefit of both the landlord and business.’ Xtrafloor Flex Pro was developed for installation on top of an existing floor and is compatible with Moduleo LVT planks or tiles, both in click and gluedown applications. A combination of the advantages of a dryback floor and the ease of installation typical of a floating click floor: the laying system is userfriendly and the floor is easy to reposition and remove without leaving any marks. ‘Green credentials are increasingly important, particularly as contractors continue to target waste reduction in construction projects. Moduleo floor tiles consist of up to 50% recycled materials and can be reclaimed and recycled at the end of their product life; key selling points like this resonate with ecoconscious customers,’ adds Bigland. WOOD AND LAMINATE

Shine on and off Rustic, high gloss and matt finishes are all popular Matt finishes are in fashion, but in the ever-changing world of wood and laminate floors, there’s always a new trend waiting in the wings. Kährs’ Shine Collection comprises eight high gloss wood floors, which

Kährs’ Shine Beech Opaque

46

Interiors Monthly July 2017

combine natural style and a glamorous luxury look. Designs span from ethereal Opaque to Black Silver and feature a variety of surface treatments, with transparent, shimmer and metallic lacquer finishes.

Beech Opaque and Oak Pearl are the two lightest designs, with a white semi-transparent stain and a white pearl shimmer. Oak Fumoir is Shine’s mid tone, with a light smoked grey/brown tone.

WOOD AND LAMINATE The two darkest designs – Ash Black Copper and Ash Black Silver – each have a black stain infused with copper metallic and silver metallic. All designs are finished with Kährs high gloss lacquer and have a discreet micro-bevelled edge, which defines the one-strip plank format. Each design is made from sustainable oak, ash or beech and features Kährs’ multi-layered construction and is offered alongside a wide range of accessories, including sleek matching skirting boards and entrance threshold mouldings. Kersaint Cobb’s Vie Maison range

embraces a Scandinavian style of interiors while maintaining the simplicity of French elegance. There are both 150mm and 190mm options in seven designs. The 18mm thick product has a tongue and groove installation system and a variety of finishes. Impression is Classen’s latest Wiparquet collection: a clickable HDFbased floor that has an additional, integrated cork layer for sound absorption. The collection includes 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 12mm thicknesses and a variety of plank

formats from narrow to XXL. BerryAlloc has revamped its Saga collection to encompass the latest trends in interior design. It brings extra short or extra long planks, allowing experimentation with the dimensions of a room. Saga comes in a soft colour palette of eight oak shades and is characterised by deep grooves that increase the feel of the floor and add a matte effect to the boards, enhancing its modern look. Boards are coated with oil, for a pleasant touch. Nordic Polar Oak is a light wood floor with rustic charm and the longest and widest of Pergo’s Langeland planks (2,400mm x 260mm). This achieves a spacious impression with variation in colour and structure that includes large knots and cracks. The enhanced texture is achieved through deep brushing of softer areas for a more natural feel, with bevels along all edges. It has an extra matt lacquer for an untreated wood look. Garbelotto uses 90 Gloss water based varnish to offer a high gloss option on all of its ranges. WOOD AND LAMINATE

Triple lock Three technologies combine for waterproof flooring When creating waterproof laminate planks for its Quick-Step, Balterio and Pergo brands, Unilin’s approach was based on three premises: compressing the plank’s bevels during production; adding a water-repellent coating; and using click installation systems with pre-tension. ‘When it comes to bevelled laminate floors, all three elements are crucial for a 100% waterproof end result,’ says Laurent Meersseman, Unilin R&D director. Quick-Step offers two waterproof laminate collections: Impressive (Ultra) and Majestic. Bevels are pressed into the HDF surface layer and coated during production to avoid any weaknesses in the installed floor. This prevents water from seeping through the bevels; the floor’s joints have the same quality as the individual boards’ surfaces, featuring the same watertight, anti-static and wearresistant top layer. ‘Add to that the Uniclic installation system with pre-tension, and you have yourself a true to nature laminate floor that stands up 100% to water and other liquids,’ he explains. Pergo’s water-resistant laminate collection Sensation was introduced in 2016. ‘Similar to the waterproof QuickStep laminate collections, Sensation boards have bevels that are compressed during production and also a water-

repellent coating that eliminates weak points in the installed floors. Creating a fully sealed surface through installation under tension, the Uniclic and PerfectFold drop-down click technologies – for the long and short floor panel sides respectively – make up the third and final element of flawless watertightness,’ explains Meersseman. Creating its first water-repellent digitally printed collection, Balterio developed Grande. ‘In the case of Grande, the bevels aren’t pressed into the HDF boards, but into their thick urethane lacquer finish. Balterio features two drop-down click

systems – CXP+ and FXP with pre-tension. Furthermore, Grande laminate floors are finished with Unilin’s signature coating. The result? Watertight and authentic-looking floors,’ he says. Meersseman is looking to expand the benefits to other floors. ‘We’re researching ways in which we can apply watertightness technologies developed for bevelled laminate floors to other products, like our non-bevelled floors. For those floors, the points of connection between floorboards are equally important for a waterproof end result.’ Visit: www.unilin.com

Flower power Nature inspires Uusi-Autti’s designs

Blossom is available in table and pendant versions

‘With the objective of bringing the poetry back to everyday life with beautifully designed objects,’ Be&liv was established in Helsinki in 2012. ‘Every detail of each Be&liv design is engineered to offer the highest quality in contemporary design and to showcase the true nature of the materials used. The organic signature style is created by using the most precise manufacturing techniques and modern, high quality materials,’ says Janne Uusi-Autti, Be&liv co-founder and designer. Its new Peony ceiling lampshade, designed by Uusi-Autti, celebrates nature’s organic forms. The 55cm x 50cm lampshade is made from plywood and is available in natural white or charcoal black. ‘Peony bends plywood with a natural flower theme into an elegant contemporary form,’ he says. Its Blossom lampshade, available in 20cm x 23cm table or pendant versions, has had a new finish added: stainless steel. This builds on the previous painted black, painted white and 24k gold plating finishes. ‘Blossom is a stunning statement piece. The shaping of the steel or brass sheets combined with the perforated surface creates beautiful patterns when the light shines through. and transport, and use less packaging making them a sustainable choice. The items are extremely easy to assemble yourself at home,’ he adds. Visit: www.beandliv.com

SOFTWARE

Customer transactions can be processed anywhere in the store

Sales on the move Ordorite is to introduce a mobile POS function With digital marketing tools and communications being an integral part of any furniture business today, software firm Ordorite is to launch a mobile POS system this month. The device will allow retailers to provide customers with a seamless and smooth transaction from any location in the store. ‘28% of retailers internationally are moving towards mobile POS as it provides a seamless and efficient customer experience,’ says Stephen Connolly, Ordorite ceo. The firm will demonstrate the system at the Manchester Furniture Show, where it will also demonstrate a prototype of its mobile applications for delivery, route planning, and proof of delivery, for use by delivery drivers. Due to the company’s success over the past few years across the UK, it is looking to recruit around 10 people in the next 18 months in sales, business development, training consultancy and implementation. It also plans to further expand its offices to areas such as Manchester. ‘The reception of our software has been extremely positive, with customers outlining the benefits of it being software specifically for the furniture industry and also having a fast and easy to use POS system, which allows salespeople to process sales quickly and efficiently and free up more time to spend building rapport with the customers,’ he says. ‘We have found customers are really embracing using the system as many retailers are moving from legacy systems or systems that are not specifically built for their industry, reducing the return on investment from them. We are successfully migrating people over from either old legacy systems or standard accounts systems, or having no system at all,’ adds Connolly. Visit: www.ordorite.com

UNDERLAY

Treading comfortably Interfloor has introduced higher density products Demand for more luxurious flooring products suitable for use in all areas of the home was instrumental in Interfloor’s decision to introduce its highest density PU underlay range. ‘The trend for increasingly luxurious and comfortable interiors means that many of our retail customers are keen to add firmer PU products to their offer. Now with our new Premium High Density range they can,’ says Gary Cowley, Interfloor sales director. The three products in the Premium High Density (PHD) range are all 180kg/m³ and offer superior protection for carpets that is longer lasting and better performing as well as having good environmental credentials. dimensional stability and cleaner cutting during installation as well as ‘shock absorber’ properties to help give it a longer life. PHD Titanium 8mm and PHD Palladium 10mm have a polyethylene with reinforcing scrim backing, as featured on Tredaire Titanium, Flamecheck and FR7. This backing also helps increase dimensional stability, is resistant to tearing, and is easy to cut and trim. ‘The PHD underlays boast superior heat insulation properties and have high acoustic ratings to reduce noise. They are also made from 100% recycled foam. Consumers will love the high performance features of our new PHD underlays, while fitters can’t fail to be impressed with how easy it is to install. We are sure the range will be a top choice for all areas of the home,’ says Cowley. Tredaire Colours Red is the company’s thickest, densest sponge rubber underlay. ‘Tredaire Colours Red is Interfloor’s top sponge rubber underlay and gives unrivalled underfoot comfort and sound insulation. Its excellent shock absorber properties also help carpets look new for longer. Gripperrods Professional Gripper is the UK’s finest, with a specification that exceeds all others in the marketplace. For high quality installations with a thick underlay such as Tredaire Colours Red, it’s the perfect match,’ he adds. Visit: www.interfloor.com

UNDERLAY

Walk the walk with the Big 4 QA Flooring Solutions’ PowerWalk completes its quartet QA Flooring Solutions has added to its underlay offer, creating what it calls the Big 4. ‘To complete our range of high quality products, we have also introduced PowerWalk – a new high density underlay for luxury use. PowerWalk is designed to offer supreme underfoot comfort while giving the maximum support in heavy traffic areas,’ says Garry Atmore, QA Flooring Solutions marketing manager. ‘The high grade foam also means it’s much more consistent than most alternative underlays, making it quicker and easier to cut and fit. Its high density (130kg/m3) means it’s suitable for even the heaviest wear, making it ideal for stretch-fit applications in both domestic and commercial environments. You can be sure that carpets will stay put.’ PowerWalk is available in 9mm and 11mm thicknesses. ‘The Big 4 — incorporating FloorSure, SpringBack, UltraBounce and now PowerWalk — allows retailers to choose from quality products on a budget to premium luxury for customers who want a little bit more from their underlay. With QA, retailers have the opportunity to maximise their profit on every sale by selling products for every budget that deliver great added value,’ he says. The underlay ranges also have new packaging. Their bold black and white print pattern helps make QA products stand out from alternatives while the stylish, premium finish delivers added value to help increase resale profit margins for retailers. ‘Each product has a unique colour wrap, so it is easy to distinguish between multiple ranges. The unique benefits of each range, including the BS5808 accreditation, are also displayed, giving consumers the reassurance that they are buying a top quality product,’ adds Atmore. UNDERLAY

Upgrade for longer life Floorwise is adding more foam to its underlays To give better recovery and long-term durability, Floorwise has upgraded some of its most popular PU underlays with higher densities. Prima (8mm) and Lusso (10mm) have been improved with 18% more foam, upgraded from Medium Density to High Density. High-performance Lift (7mm) and Tread (9mm) are now even more durable thanks to another 18% uplift, going from Super High Density to Ultra High Density. The result is an improved family of products that recover from footfall quicker and therefore provide a long-lasting underlay solution. With a commitment to continual product improvement across all lines, these revised specifications show that Floorwise is determined to make sure its underlays continue to deliver customers the best performance and value. ‘With these density upgrades on some of our most popular PU underlays, generally without a price hike, we are making sure that the Floorwise name continues to stand for the very best in performance and value,’ says Richard Bailey, Floorwise md. ‘Retailers can rely on the Floorwise brand to deliver underlays that provide invaluable up-sell potential, while homeowners can trust their Floorwise underlay will provide comfort and recovery for many years to come.’ The improved density formula has already been introduced to the Traffic and Maxi high-performance underlays. A 25% increase in density has uprated these styles from High Density to Extra High Density. This programme of improvements throughout its underlay collection continues with a new product for its Super High Density category that delivers a durable and comfortable solution for the most used areas of the home. Abundance of offers Gallery Direct is expanding its offer further As it returns to Manchester Central, Gallery Direct continues to add to its already extensive product offer following the success of its January Furniture Show introductions. It is doubling its range of artwork and adding to the mirror and occasional furniture collections for autumn/winter. The Mustique living room range is being expanded with bedroom pieces. At the show it will introduce dining chairs that follow the Scandi trend. For the first time the company is also focusing on the value of ranges. ‘The infrastructure is all in place emphasising the value retailers can have access to,’ says Peter Delaney, Gallery Direct md. ‘We have heightened the focus on the furniture and the value being offered. This summer is only the third anniversary of buying Frank Hudson, so we’ve only had limited furniture launches. We want to be more important to more retailers. Stockists who meet display and sales criteria will have lower pricing.’ He says products to meet specific price points and new product development is ongoing and the company is already looking at items for 2018. SHOW GUIDE

Eclectic styling Rowico will add more bedroom and dining ranges Rowico UK’s focus has always been to design unique pieces of freestanding, contemporary furniture that transform everyday rooms into characterful living spaces with unmistakable style and personality. Coordinating pieces are brought into their own using sustainably sourced and reclaimed timbers to give each item of furniture its very own identity. This year’s show sees no exception to this ethos, with the expansion of the Warwick collection to now include bedroom lines. The meandering curves and subtle grey hues of this range are fused with limed timber tops to achieve a calm and relaxed exterior with a modern twist. Designed to cater to those who prefer a more natural appeal, Warwick is now available in an all-over waxed finish enhancing the unique characteristics of the grain and further encapsulating its charm. As a pioneer of creating eclectic ranges, Rowico will launch Wootton: ‘a seamless pairing between the antique chic of parquet and state of the art design for modern living. The sideboard is perhaps a jewel in the crown of this collection with its exacting angles giving

DESIGN The Libertà chair, designed by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1989, is considered a symbol of the Meritalia brand. It is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Louvre in Paris, for its genius. Two simple aluminium sheets opportunely shaped are folded to become a chair. Libertà has great personality and unique design. Originally in anodised aluminium in black or natural colour, for 2017 there is a choice of painted aluminium in black, white or natural colour and gold leaf.

The Accademia storage unit, created by Afra and Tobia Scarpa in 1995. Created in teak, it offers refinement in the rich definition of building details; the great care of planning architectural proportions; the elegant cultural condition which generated the idea clashes with the obvious functional simplicity of this object which is still designed to be a protagonist in any place. For 2017 it is available in bi-colours.

In 1987 Afra and Tobia Scarpa created Meritalia’s most iconic design: the Cesare armchair. From the soft yet precise lines, the product finds harmonious collocation with the latest cutting-edge products. The bearing frame features a separate structure for the seat, back and armrests in electro-welded steel tube. The back is flexible thanks to special harmonic steel leaf springs in the frame. The seat and back springs are made of elastic crossed belts with padding in polyurethane of different densities and synthetic wadding. For this year a new size of armchair was added.

Icons During Milan Design Week, Meritalia hosted an exhibition of 30 of its most iconic designs at its Via Durini showroom to mark its 30th anniversary. Here are some of the key products. Visit: www.meritalia.it

Ice More by Vittorio Prato in 2008 built on the success of Iceberg. Defined in terms of dimensions as a basic module measuring 8cm, its recurrent measurement is its multiple, 24cm, that defines its modularity. The production method uses basic elements, making Ice More highly industrial and flexible for multiple compositions and with easily removable covers. For 2017 a new module available in central or angular versions was added along with variable depth depending on the side used as the backrest.

In 2013 Meritalia introduced the 1957 Cubo by Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. ‘When we found ourselves in front of the choice to produce or not a design still unedited from the Castiglioni brothers we all looked each other in the eyes. We recognised in the look of each one of us the magic, the one that only histories of few designers are able to communicate. Since the beginning in 1987, we always took care about innovation and research. Innovations and ideas, in projects and proposals. And a lot of research, especially in materials: here’s why Cubo looked like the right choice, the correct way to follow this in 2013 during which Meritalia wants, once again, to showcase projects that have a content and that are the result of serious work of someone who has something to say, something to communicate and launch in history, just like the Castiglioni brothers,’ said the company. For 2017 the original iron structure was replaced with aluminium to make the design lighter.

BUYING GROUPS

Setting the pace Members were in top gear at Greendale’s member event Fast cars and flooring were the order of the day at Greendale’s 2017 member event held at Mercedes Benz World and Brooklands Museum in Surrey last month. Members were greeted by an array of classic cars ranging from Jaguar E types, Ferrari and Aston Martin Exotica to a Lotus Cortina, Morris Minor Countryman and a Riley as the 29th London to Brighton Classic Car Run assembled at Brooklands. The buying group’s event allowed members to take in the cars on show as well as talk business with almost 40 of the group’s suppliers all showing Greendale branded ranges alongside their own products. All the leading carpet companies were there along with rug suppliers, hard flooring, underlay and related accessories and services. Members could also enjoy a lap as a passenger in a souped up Mercedes AMG. The track was in full view of the members in the first floor exhibition area. One lucky member was selected at random to accompany the Silver Arrows display team on their stunt show. Greendale’s own exhibition area showed modern display stands with new imagery and many new carpet ranges all under the group’s own labelling. Suppliers included Brockway Carpets, Cormar, Ulster, Victoria, Whitestone Weavers, Witters, Abingdon, Edel Telenzo, Lano, Associated Weavers, Gaskell and Balta. New rug supplier Asiatic was there, along with Ramezani, Tribal Rugs and Westco. Furlong’s new vinyl collection is available to members on a Greendale branded unit, while Coretec showed its cork backed, looselay LVT. Interfloor and Ball & Young demonstrated underlays while CAT showed off its edging products.
