Materials matter

Recyclability and longevity are key

For furniture manufacturer EMU, materials are what matters. Steel, aluminium and teak form the cornerstones of the majority of its designs.

Founded in 1951 as Elettro-Meccanica Umbra, producing transmission equipment for military use, the company soon moved into school and office furniture, before the construction of Italy’s first plasticisation plant meant its designs could survive outdoors.

Fast-forward to today and the commitment to manufacture products that last remains as true as when brothers Aldo and Angelo Biscarini and their brother-in-law Dante Menconi founded the company in Marsciano, near Perugia.

EMU still manufactures in Marsciano, where next year should see completion of a 1MW solar panel system, producing more than 400,000 items a year, and selling through more than 1,000 retailers in 85 countries.

The Thor collection of chairs takes its inspiration from a traditional country style but the use of steel makes the classic lines appear more modern and more dynamic in shape. Thor also includes an FSC 100% teak version for

the chair and stool seats, which can easily be added to the steel seat at a later stage.

The Lyze collection has new, airy, aluminium and steel shapes. The first version of the chair, armchair and lounge chair have an aluminium seat with a back made of intertwined, tubular stainless steel, with the option of adding a teak seat.

The aluminium Shine has teak armrests and optional teak seat, while the tubular metal seat and back of Apero are MIG-welded with brass. Visit: www.emu.it
