Currently Thai industries continue to do well. This includes automotive and auto parts, electronics, construction materials, construction, hotels and tourism, hospitals and the health and beauty industry. This growth will be part of Thailand’s strength ahead of the liberalization and opportunities that will accompany the AEC. However, it is essential for entrepreneurs to adjust to the serious competition that will follow. Competing on cost alone will be more difficult in the future. At present, Thailand ranks third in ASEAN on the higher minimum wage scale for the region after Singapore and Malaysia. Indonesia's labor costs are cheaper by half and Vietnam is approximately a third with Myanmar being the lowest. The AEC framework will make way for an ASEAN single market and regional production base. The downside is competition from neighboring countries with cheaper costs. Investors from Japan and China are also keen to benefit and are prepared to move their production bases to the region. The U.S. and Europe have also expressed interest to invest more, especially at a time when their economies are still in a recovery mode. In the past Thailand focused on U.S., European and Japanese markets, but now ASEAN economies are growing at a stronger level. Currently, Thai export products to ASEAN accounted for almost 25 % of total exports. The border trade between Burma, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam accounted for approximately 70 % of total exports to the U.S. The above data indicates that entrepreneurs should focus their investments within ASEAN and especially on those developing countries rich in natural resources such as Myanmar and Cambodia. These countries have huge labor sources available at cheap labor prices and lower production costs. Thailand is able to manufacturer more sophisticated items and has the ability to employ more advanced technology and machinery. This has been helping to attract good business opportunities to the Kingdom. Growing domestic demand and the further development of our supply chain will further increase our competitiveness in the global market.

: How will the AEC help the development of the Thai Part Manufacturing industry? ถามถึงเออีซีกับการพัฒนาอุตสาหกรรมการผลิตชิ้นสวนไทย

Khun Somkiat: “By finding business opportunities and linking business networks which will result in a larger market. We need to know our competitors and also know ourselves. This allows entrepreneurs to further develop and find new marketing channels.”

Ajarn Kamon: “In the beginning, we should start with our neighboring countries, by exporting finished products to them. For the long-term Thai manufacturers should manufacture tooling equipment and Mould and Die products to be sent to neighboring countries.”

คุณสมเกียรติ “การหาลูทางโอกาสและการเชื่อมโยงทางธุรกิจจะ สงผลทําใหตลาดของเราใหญขึ้น โดยถารูเขารูเรา เรารูตัวเราระดับหนึ่ง เราควรหาขอมูลตางๆ เพื่อ รูเขาใหไดดวย สวนตรงนี้ทําใหผูประกอบการของ เราสามารถพัฒนาตอยอดหาตลาดและชองทาง ใหมๆไดสงู ”

อาจารยกมล “ชวงตนควรจะเริ่มตนกับกลุมเพื่อนบานของเรา โดยการสงออกผลิตภัณฑสําเร็จรูปจากเมืองไทย ไปที่ประเทศเพื่อนบานของเรากอน ระยะยาวเปน โอกาสของผูผ ลิตไทยในการนํา ทูลลิง่ แมพมิ พ โมลล ดายลฯ จากบานเราไปทําการผลิตในประเทศเพือ่ น บาน”

: What do you see as the best opportunities for entrepreneurs in the upcoming AEC? ทั้งสองทานมองวาเออีซีที่จะเกิดขึ้นเปนโอกาสที่ดีของผูประกอบการเราอยางไร

Ajarn Kamon: “I see very good opportunities in joining the AEC. We need to realize that all countries are business partners not competitors. I agree with Khun Somkiat on business linkage being important along with technology, production, marketing, joint ventures and subcontracting. We need to focus on the importance of education and create regional partnerships. Linking technology will also help. Thailand is already advanced in some ways but we should find new ways to develop in other areas such as cost control. We are currently manufacturing high quality products with very high pricing. Don’t expect that customers will continue to accept this. We need to rethink. This approach is wrong and it will be hard for us to continue.”

Khun Somkiat: “I agree that basic education should be adjusted in the same way. In the future development of the AEC, technology will play a role in helping enhance our abilities. Viewing neighboring countries as partners will help Thailand become more of a manufacturing hub. One of the issues concerning education mentioned by Ajarn Kamon, referred to how the government is changing the school term and also adjusting education curriculums to synchronize with other ASEAN countries. Our government should come out with a policy that focuses the AEC countries in this direction and makes the AEC either a manufacturing hub for cheap goods or a group of countries that are recognized as a manufacturing hub for quality products.”

อาจารยกมล “สําหรับผมมองวาเปนโอกาสที่ดี การรวมประชาคมเศรษฐกิจอาเซียนอยาก ใหมองวาทุกประเทศเปนมิตรกันไมอยากใหเปนคูแขง ผมเห็นดวยกับคุณสมเกียรติ การเชือ่ มโยงเปนสิง่ สําคัญ เรือ่ งเทคโนโลยีการผลิต การตลาด ในเรือ่ ง ของการรวมทุน รับชวงตอกัน ที่สําคัญคือการใหความสําคัญกับการศึกษาที่ มีหลักสูตรสอดคลองกัน ตองรวมกันคิดในระดับภูมิภาคมองเปนพันธมิตร มี การเชื่อมโยงเทคโนโลยีกัน ประเทศไทยอาจจะกาวหนาไปแลวในบางเรื่อง เราจะหาวิธีพัฒนาในสวนอื่นๆ ตอไปเชนควบคุมตนทุนราคา เราจะผลิต ของดีกําหนดราคาสูง ถาคาดหวังวาเขาจะมาซื้อของเราเยอะๆ ผมคิดวาคิด ผิดแลวเปนไปไดยากเลย”

คุณสมเกียรติ “พืน้ ฐานการศึกษาผมเห็นดวยเปนอยางยิง่ ควรมีการปรับพืน้ ฐานการศึกษาไป ในทิศทางเดียวกัน อยางนอยการเติบโตของเออีซีในอนาคต เทคโนโลยีเปน สวนหนึง่ ทีท่ าํ ใหเรามีศกั ยภาพ และมองวาแตละประเทศเปนมิตรมีการตอยอด ทางธุรกิจได ไทยเราสามารถเปนศูนยกลางทีม่ ขี นาดใหญไดดว ย ประเด็นทีห่ นึง่ ที่อาจารยกมลทิ้งทายไวเรื่องการศึกษาคิดวาขณะนี้รัฐบาลมีการปรับเรื่อง เวลาใหตรงกัน ระดับตอไปเรื่องหลักสูตรการศึกษาใหสอดคลอง ภาครัฐควร มีนโยบายใหมกี ารลิง้ คกบั สวนของ AEC เราจะไปทางไหน จะเปนกลุม ประเทศ ที่สามารถผลิตสินคาราคาถูกหรือเปลาหรือเปนกลุมประเทศสินคาที่มีการ ยอมรับทั่วโลก”

A FAMILY HISTORY OF GOOD BUSINESS

Thai Sakol Group is an importer of high-quality cutting tools and machinery. They focus on top products and after-sales service which always exceeds customer expectations. The company is a distributor of a broad variety of industrial machinery for a variety of industries. Currently Thai Sakol Group is the distributor for world’s top 3 brand such as Kanefusa from Japan, Vollmer and Reform from Germany and many other quality companies.

“Thai International Machinery Ltd., Part.” was founded in 1975 and this will be our 38th year in business. My father started the business when he saw opportunities in importing circular saw blades and in particular blades from Japan. We were the first company to import this kind of product for the woodworking industry and we have grown accordingly. All suppliers and makers of plywood boards know the name “Khun Pravit” – which is my father. During this time, we have carved out a market share of around 90 % because of the clear customer focus and sound business strategy created by my father. He would always jump in personally to help solve problems for our customers.”

Khun Yutthana said; “The board meeting was held for the first time and our club was formed because of intense competition and drastically rising production costs. We are comprised of a group of companies in the same industry and form a network of associated industries in

order to give us a competitive edge. Our club will meet annually and currently we have more than 50 members. That number is expected to increasing steadily as the number of factories in Lamphun now has more than 1,000 plants.”

The Regional Investment and Economic Center 1, Oﬃce of the Board of Investment, is considered one of the agencies that have played a critical role in supporting investors and linking them to small entrepreneurs. Khun Sakchai Luangsathitkul, the newly promoted Director, reviewed an important manufacturing trend in the Northern Region. Khun Sakchai started by sharing some of his experience at the BOI Taipei, Taiwan. “Large investors like Apple and Foxcon employ millions of workers but are also facing problems of staﬀ shortage. There is serious shortage of labor in Taiwan’s manufacturing industry, especially in areas of the Aerospace industry such as lighting and electronic devices for aircraft. Some of the orders are from the United States who wants Taiwan to be able to fully equip and protect itself from China. In Thailand many investors and entrepreneurs would like to come and invest in here, but the main problem is Thai entrepreneurs cannot communicate in English.” Khun Sakchai added, “People think the cost of living in Taiwan is expensive, but it is actually cheaper than the cost of living in Thailand. If I have 20-30 Baht I can travel a long distance by underground train in Taiwan. I was stationed there for 3-4 years and the total accumulated deficit for their highspeed rail was approximately 80,000 million baht. The Taiwanese thought it was a small issue as it could be fully utilized. The government continues to build underground rail systems near hospitals, schools and important landmarks. get around. Unless things change Changmai in 5 years time, will be facing the same problems as Bangkok. This is because building and infrastructure continues to grow and without a plan for a good transportation system, Changmai will be a diﬃcult place to live.”

In terms of production, companies might manufacture or import parts from other countries then assembled them in Thailand, which has more advanced technology.
