What is the Unity Day ? Asking yourself why this weekend is so long? On November 4th, Russia celebrate the Unity Day. Unity Day (also called Day of People’s Unity or National Unity Day) is a national holiday in Russia. It commemorates the popular uprising which expelled Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth occupation forces from Moscow in November 1612, and more generally the end of the Time of Troubles and the Polish-Muscovite War (1605–1618). The day’s name alludes to the idea that all classes of Russian society united to preserve Russian statehood when there was neither a tsar nor a patriarch to guide them. In 1613 tsar Mikhail Romanov instituted a holiday named Day of Moscow’s Liberation from Polish Invaders. It was celebrated in the Russian Empire until 1917, when it was replaced with a commemoration of the Russian Revolution.

Unity Day was reinstituted by the Russian Federation in 2005, since when the year 1612 has been celebrated instead of 1917 every November 4. The day is also the feast day of the Russian Orthodox icon of Our Lady of Kazan. ------------------------------The main Idea is the calls for tolerance between various ethnic and religious groups. Russians may celebrate Unity Day in many ways. some may lay flowers to the monuments of national heroes, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozharsky. Russian Orthodox Christians may attend a church service to honor Our Lady of Kazan, one of the most important Russian Orthodox icons. November 4 is this icon’s feast day. Natalya Nesterova, (1944 - ) Natalya Nesterova was born into a family of artists: her parents were both architects and her grandfather, who lived with the family during her childhood, was a Russian Avant-Garde painter and art instructor. Encouraged from an early age to pursue her creative interests, she attended the Moscow Secondary Art School as a teenager and, later, the Moscow Surikov Art Institute, where she received classical training in composition, still life, and figure painting. Shortly after graduating from the Institute, Nesterova became a member of the Artists’ Union of the USSR, an organization of professional visual artists who were approved and supported by the Soviet state. Although she enjoyed the benefits of her “official” status – a guaranteed job,
