Exhibition “Arkady Shaikhet. Photographs 1932-1941 “ The Russian Association of Proletarian Photographers (ROPF) was formed between 1931 and 1932, and Arkady Shaikhet actively participated in its activities. Alexander Rodchenko became one of the leaders of the ‘October’ group.

Archive photographs and negatives had to be destroyed — content of photojournalists’ archives were carefully monitored. Rykov, Bukharin (Shaikhet photographed him very often), Zinoviev, Kamenev, Radeka and Tukhachevsky all disappeared from the scene, and images of them also had to disappear. Only politically neutral figures could remain in the family archive: Lunacharsky, Kirov, Krupskaya, Gorky, Dzerzhinsky, Yaroslavsky, etc. Arkady Shaikhet developed and printed his photographs at home. The whole family assisted him in this, washing, rolling out photographs on glass, glossing and trimming. His son Anatoly did the retouching.

The geography of Shaikhet’s photography commissions is the geography of the Soviet Union. Here is a list of his trips for 1937 alone: Khabarovsk, Vladivostok, Grodekov, Khanka, Voroshilov, Simferopol, Yalta, Sevastopol, Zaporozhye, Leningrad, Lozovaya, Kharkov, Baku, Mineralniye Vody, Dnepropetrovsk, Kiev, and so on. In 1938 Arkady Shaikhet was dismissed from the editorial staff of ‘Ogonyok’ magazine and his work was no longer published in the magazines ‘Soviet Photo’ and ‘USSR in Construction’. In September he was engaged by a new publication, the ‘Illustrated Gazette’. It was in 1939 when Shaikhet took his best image, or more precisely, photo-picture ‘Express’, the image of a country heading towards a glorious future. In 1932-1941 Arkady Shaikhet’s works were published in ‘anniversary’ albums. These included ‘Soviet Subtropics’ (1934), ‘Worker-Peasant Red Army’ (1934), ‘10 Years of Uzbekistan’ (1935), ‘Industry of Socialism’ (1935), ‘On Railway Transport.

Despite their differing views, photographers in these groups regularly collaborated and shared their art experience , while openly standing up for their own opinions. From 1930 Arkady Shaikhet produced materials for the Back then, it was a turning magazines ‘USSR in Conpoint: photography, like all struction’, ‘Our Achieveofficial art of the 1930s, was ments’, ‘Construction of Marelated to the slogan ‘The chine-Tractor Stations and country must know its he- State Farms’, ‘Projector’, roes”. famous

“FUTURA. TIMEWARP” Futura – is a famous US artist in the New York graffiti culture, who have been working as a graphic designer and illustrator for 30 years. He is considered as the ancestor of abstract graffiti, whose works have a huge impact on today’s pop culture. FUTURA’s unique style was formed in the New York underground scene in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, when street subcultures, experimental punk rock, hiphop intersected with contemporary art and fashion communities. Through his works, FUTURA explores the boundaries of text and abstraction, bringing into play a range of unique methods and media. TIME – is a very special field of study and exploration by FUTURA, which is a subject of deep analysis, both technical and conceptual. Despite professional reputation, FUTURA doesn’t focus on the achievements of the past. With true curiosity about the future he looks for the new formats, techniques and tools. Year2014 has been a landmark year in the life of the artist. In 1984 FUTURA visited the Soviet Union for the first time, and was photographed breakdancing on Moscow’s Red Square by photographer Sophie Bramley.

www.intermarkrelocation.ru

This image became a symbol of the important historical period, forging cultural ties between two polarized Cold War era cultures. That year was also marked with the birth of the artist’s son, Timothy Mcgurr, who, exactly 30 years later on, as professional photographer photographed his father on the same spot on Red Square. Just a stone’s throw away, at the Shchusev state museum of architecture, FUTURA’s highly personal project, entitled “TIMEWARP” will open to the public. This exhibition will showcase most recent artworks, especially prepared for the show at Shchusev state museum of architecture. FUTURA’s art can be enjoyed by anyone, from graffiti enthusiasts to admirers of the old masters. It brings to mind the works of Joan Miro, Jackson Pollock and Vasily Kandinsky, forcing viewers to rethink their previously-held misconceptions of abstract art. “The true observationist needs not a photographic memory, but a feeling for things within sight barriers which we define as horizons. Know that it’s the ability to appreciate all of them that’s a paramount. If you’re not willing to look, you’ll never see. The option is clear, enjoy with unconditional happiness and fill these moments with

pleasure and surprise. Don’t let the forefront dictate the whole picture, look for graphic subterfuge in the background which reveal more. These subtle nowheres I call home,” – comments FUTURA. FUTURA (Leonard Mcgurr, formerly “FUTURA 2000”) is one of the most renowned US modern artists, a pioneer of the New York graffiti scene (representing the second wave of graffiti, the so-called “old school”), and forebear of abstractionism within the subculture. In the late 1970s and early 1980s FUTURA’s work was exhibited alongside leading artists, including Keith Haringm Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kenny Scharf, Rammellzee, Dondi White, Zephyr, Seen and came to embody the 80s New York underground scene. Over the last 30 years FUTURA had been constantly active as an artist, a graphic designer and an illustrator. His work has had a great impact on pop culture, and can be found in museums and private collections all over the world. Shchusev State Museum of Architecture 5/25, Vozdvizhenka str. m. Victor Vasarely (19061997) – Hungarian-French artist who staarted from abstract art, and later studied the laws of visual perception. In his works, he tried to fool a human eye, for example he created images that seem bulky on a flat paper. The exhibition features the famous painting with three-dimensional effect, zebra prints, and a collage that was brought to the space station “Soyuz-7.” Collection for the exhibition is provided by the Hungarian collector Katie Chepei.
