The Russian New Year Guide The most extensive New Year celebrations in Russia occur on December 31st/ January 1st. Fireworks, concerts and sumptuous feasts mark this holiday. It is on this day that the “Russian Santa”- Ded Moroz and his companion Sengurochka visit children to deliver gifts (See the differences of Santa and Dede Moroz p.14).
You will see that the winter festive season in Russia is truly interesting!

So if you want to have an amazing 2015-year, you will need to be concentrated on all your action for the last and the first day of the year and follow the Russian New Year Customs.
d Pay all the debt and try to get back all the debts from your friends, so next year you will have no debts and you will wait money from nobody;
All that you will do on these days will reflect all your next year!
Before the 30th of December Before New Year, you still have a possibility to “Change your life” and get some “good points” for your karma.

Visit a hairdresser or barber, make a new look to welcome the New Year;

Make some shopping, you will need to welcome the New Year in new clothes, or you will never do shopping in the next year! (That one is scary for women =) );

Make some shopping in the grocery store – if you table is rich – you will be rich next year (it’s so easy);
d Ask anyone who is await-
ing it for forgiveness and forgive all the bad things to others – and you will be Happy next year;
What is known in the West as a Christmas Tree, is called a New Year’s Tree in Russia, so don’t be confused, when the Russians talk to you about buying a Christmas tree on the 30th of December. The New Year is regarded in Russia as a family celebration, when everyone get together to have dinner.

Start by getting out all the old things and things that remind you some bad or difficult moments of your life. If you don’t do that the bad luck and emotion will follow you in the new 2015 year, that we don’t want to happens;

On the time of clock strikes
d Take a shower or bath, you need to be clean and beautiful to welcome the New Year – it will make you happy next year. d
Start celebrations at home early, some families start even before 6pm. So your next year will be rich and interesting.

Invite all your family (if possible) and all your friends. As with whom you will welcome the New Year – will be with you all year long.
d
Put some ropes or ribbons on the legs of the table – so all the people sitting at the table for the New Year will be healthy and always together.
Here comes the magic! Before the Kremlin clock starts striking, all the Russians of all political views listen to the Russian President and get ready to the main part of the celebration, the Kremlin clock strikes.

Give the gifts to everyone in the room
When your small ritual of Russian New Year is finished and the clock strikes, call ALL you friends, as the more people you will congratulate, the richer you will be in 2015. At that moment the Ded Moroz and Snegurochka usually come.
Don’t stop to celebrate and invite your friends on the 1st of January. While the 31st of December is more of a family celebration, you can spend the following day with your friends. Mind all the things you do during this day, as it will be a brief of all your 2015 year.

The Food A big part of the celebration is the table! As you know now, this is the reflection of your fortune in the 2015. We selected from a huge number of dishes some easy recipes of Classical dishes for the New Year to feel the Russian New Year at 100%.

Salad Olivier Ingredients: 2 lb waxy potatoes, such as Yukon Gold; 1 large carrot; 2 lb unsliced bologna; 1 white onion, minced; 1 can green peas, drained; 3 hardboiled eggs, mashed; 3 tbsp fresh dill weed, minced; 3 dill pickles, quartered lengthwise and sliced; 1 tsp black peppercorns; 2-3 bay leaves; 1 cup mayonnaise (freshly made preferable); salt; freshly ground black pepper
Method: (IMPORTANT: Those ingredients that are cubed; for purposes of Olivier salad, are cubed SMALL. The side of each cube should be no more than 1/3 inch.)
Cube potatoes and bologna.
Place potatoes and carrot, unpeeled, into a stock pot.
Toss together potatoes, bologna, carrot, pickles, eggs, onion, peas, and dill.
Add bay leaves, peppercorns, and enough boiling water to cover. Simmer until done when pricked with a fork, but not falling apart. Cool completely and peel.
Slice the carrot lengthwise.

Split each half into thirds lengthwise and slice across.

Mimosa salad recipe For years, Mimosa salad is considered as one of the musts on the table when there is a big family event or a New Year celebration. Even though the salad is made with mayonnaise, the taste is very tender and light. You can try with different canned fish in oil.
Ingredients: 1 can salmon in oil; 4 boiled eggs; 2-3 boiled carrots; 3 boiled potatoes; 1 onion; 1 cup of mayonnaise.
Method: For this salad, it is better to use a deep glass bowl. Put canned fish on the bottom without any liquid and mash with a fork. Spread mayonnaise on it. Then top with finely grated egg whites and again mayonnaise. After that goes grated boiled carrot -> mayonnaise-> finely chopped onion-> mayonnaise-> grated boiled potatoes-> mayonnaise. Selyodka Pod Shuboy The Russian name is “Selyodka pod Shouboy”, that means “Herring under fur coat”. It is a traditional national dish for any events. Ingredients: 2 thick salted herrings; 5 potatoes; 4 carrots; 3 beets; 4 hardboiled eggs; 400 gr mayonnaise.
Method: Boil vegetables until they are ready ( you can boil vegetables in 1 pan). Boil eggs hard. Peel skin from herrings, cut them along the spine. Take all bones away. Cut herring meat into very little pieces and always check for bones. Take a large dish. Put herring meat evenly on the bottom.
If you like onion, you can put little pieces of onion on the herring. Then spread mayonnaise evenly (thin layer). Grind potatoes and make the next layer of it. Spread mayonnaise. Use a fork to plane the layers. Then goes carrot (grind, put, spread). Then you do the same with 4 eggs and beets. Spread mayonnaise on the beets and grind 1 egg on it to make the dish beautiful. This salad must look like a cake. Put the dish in the fridge for an hour. “Selyodka pod Shouboy” is served as an appetizer. Приятного аппетита! (Priyatnogo apetita)

Fish Zalivnoe recipe This dish is traditional for the New Year. In Moscow and St. Petersburg it has different names: Zalivnoe and Kholodets. Ingredients: 2 lb salmon (cat fish, trout); 1 carrot; 1 onion; parsley root; 1 lemon peeled; 1 bay leaf; 5 black olives; 2 tbsp gelatin; tbsp fresh dill weed; salt.

Method: Soak 20-30 g gelatin in water in advance. Wash and clean fish.
Place a lemon slice (peeled) on every fish slice anâ decorate with carrot rounds and olives.
Cut the head, tail and fins and pour over it cold water (2 liters). Slice fish.
Strain fish stock and add gelatin, bring to a boil and strain again.
Place fish head, tail, parsley root, onion, salt in a pan and cook 25-30 minutes, then add sliced fish and cook at low heat until done (not more than 20 minutes).
Decorate fish with fresh dill weed and parsley green and pour over half stock carefully.
Take fish slices out carefully and arrange them on a dish.
Let it to congeal a little and then pour over the rest. Serve with cabbage salad, hot sauces. Приятного аппетита! (Priyatnogo apetita)
