Caribbean Medical University Provides Incomparable Learning Opportunities Headquartered in Curacao's capital of Willemstad – with administrative offices in Chicago, IL. – CMU enrolls classes each January, May and September. The university offers two main courses of study: a premedical program and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. The premedical program lasts three semesters at the Curacao campus and is for students who have completed less than 90 college credit hours. Coursework includes organic chemistry, physics, biology, English and calculus. The MD program is for those who have completed at least 90 college credits, including the science prerequisites. It's a 10-semester course that's divided into three components. Semesters 1-4 cover basic sciences and are held at the Curacao campus. Semester 5 prepares students for the United States Medical Licensing Examination. After passing the USMLE, students advance to Semesters 6-10, which consist of clinical clerkships at hospitals and medical centers in the United States. The mission of CMU is to educate medical students in accordance with the highest professional standards, to prepare clinicians to practice patient centered medicine of the highest standard, and to identify and answer fundamental questions in the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of disease, in health care delivery and in the basic sciences. CMU has implemented an entirely new model of medical education that enhances the university's ability to act as a transformational agent in the health care field. CMU's unique approach to medical education embraces cross-disciplinary teaching modalities, breakthrough technologies, and innovative ways to advance training in both basic science and clinical skills throughout the medical school curriculum. In addition, CMU deepens students' understanding of academic medicine by stressing Higher Order Thinking Skills (knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation) tested in USMLE Step I rather than simple memorization of facts to better prepare tomorrow's doctors and make an impact on their career. Students graduate prepared for the next level of medical training.
