This spring sees the best roster of new stallions to retire to France and Germany for some years. Aisling Crowe analyses performances and pedigrees Almanzor: the champion three-year-old of 2016 and the joint most-expensive new sire of 2018. The son of Wootton Bassett is standing at a fee of €35,000 at Haras d’Etreham
EUROPEAN-BASED €20,000 and above
Almanzor
2013 Wootton Bassett – Darkova (Maria’s Mon) Haras de Etreham €35,000 Almanzor is the most expensive recruit to the burgeoning rank of French stallions, and, along with Coolmore’s Caravaggio and Churchill, the highest-priced of the new stallions in Europe for 2018. Almanzor boasts an excellent race record with three victories at the highest level during his three year-old-season, including success in what was probably one of the best form races run in Europe for some time – the 2016 Irish Champion Stakes. At Leopardstown, Almanzor defeated

a galaxy of stars, including Found, the Breeders’ Cup Turf heroine who, subsequent to her second place behind Almanzor, led home a 1-2-3 for Aidan O’Brien in the Arc. Another brilliant Ballydoyle filly in the seven-time Group 1 winner Minding was also behind Almanzor and, after that defeat, Minding ended the season with victory over Ribchester, another new stallion for 2018, in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes. Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, Almanzor ended the 2016 season as champion threeyear-old in Europe, but lost out to Minding in the race for Cartier Horse of the Year. His four-year-old career never got off the ground due to serious outbreak of EHV-1 at Rouget’s yard. When Almanzor returned to the track in August last year, he was a shadow of the horse who dazzled previously and he was retired from racing. Bred by Haras d’Etreham, to whom he
returns for his breeding career, Almanzor is from the first crop of Wootton Bassett, winner of the 2010 Prix Jean Luc Lagardère for Richard Fahey. Wootton Bassett also stands at Haras d’Etreham and from three crops of racing age he is the sire of nine per cent stakes winners to runners with the unbeaten Wootton, a Listed winner in Deauville for Henri Alex Pantall and Godolphin prominent in the betting for the 2,000 Guineas. Almanzor is the first foal out of Darkova, an unraced daughter of Maria’s Mon purchased for just €18,000 from the Aga Khan’s draft at the 2011 Arqana December Sale. Her second foal Troarn is a Listed-placed full-sister to Almanzor and the ten-year-old mare is a daughter of Listed-winner Darkara, herself a half-sister to the dam of three-time Group 1 winner Darjina. It is also the family of another Prix du
new euro sires Jockey Club winner, like Almanzor, in Darsi. Wootton Bassett is son of the impressive Darley sire Iffraaj, who brings the Gone West line of Mr. Prospector blood and the appearance of Nureyev, as dam sire of Iffraaj,
is as close as Sadler’s Wells, out of Nureyev’s full-sister Fairy Bridge, gets to making an appearance in Almanzor’s pedigree. Caro, the dam sire of Maria’s Mon, is also the dam sire of Unbridled’s Song, whose
influence on the breed is deepening as a broodmare sire. Almanzor’s pedigree is free from inbreeding through the first five generations giving mare owners plenty of scope.

Wings Of Eagles
2014 Pour Moi – Ysoldina (Kendor) Haras de Montaigu €12,000 A stunning triumph under Padraig Beggy in the Derby that was eerily reminiscent of his sire’s victory in the same race six years’ earlier thrust the French-bred colt into the spotlight. His 40-1 Epsom win came at the expense of Cliffs Of Moher, Eminent and Cracksman, who finished the season as Europe’s top-rated three-year-old colt. A fractured sesamoid, sustained when finishing third to Capri and Cracksman in the Irish Derby, ended Wings Of Eagles’s racing career and he returns to his native France and for his stallion career. Bought by MV Magnier from Montaigu for €220,000 at the Arqana Yearling Sale 2015, the gorgeous son of Pour Moi had a sole success – a two-year-old maiden over a mile – to his name prior to his Derby glory. Although Pour Moi now stands for Coolmore’s NH division, breeders shouldn’t allow that to dissuade them from either the father or son. Wings Of Eagles was the second Group 1 winner by the Montjeu stallion – Pour Moi’s first was two-year-old Sacred Elixir, the winner of the JJ Atkins Stakes over a mile at Eagle Farm in Australia. Sacred Elixir’s mare was by the sprinter Stravinsky, while Pour Moi’s daughter Only Mine, a 925,000gns purchase at Tattersalls in December by the Niarchos Family, was a Listed and Group 3 winner in Ireland at 6f. She is out of a Rock Of Gibralatar mare. Wings Of Eagles is out of the Kendor mare Ysoldina whose best performance was her third place in the Group 1 Poules d’Essais des Pouliches. Her four winners also include the Oasis Dream full-sisters Gyrella and Torentosa, who were both Listed-placed over trips short of a mile. Ysoldina is a half-sister to Belle Et Celebre (Peintre Celebre), who won the Group 1 Prix Saint-Alary over a 1m2f, and to the Starborough mare Whortleberry, successful in the Group 2 Prix Jean Romanet over the same distance. Appel Au Maitre, a full-brother to Whortleberry, was twice placed in Group 1 races and successful multiple times at Group 3 level, while Valentino is the third Group winner out of their dam Rotina. She was by the Blushing Groom horse Crystal

Glitters out of a mare by Pharly. Pour Moi is inbred 3x4 to Northern Dancer, but the patriarch appears only once in the fifth generation of Ysoldina’s pedigree as the sire of Lyphard. Montjeu had a good record with mares by Darshaan, Gone West, Woodman, Shirley Heights, Silver Hawk, Warning and Nashwan and all are open to breeders as regards Wings Of Eagles.
Zarak
2013 Dubawi – Zarkava (Zamindar) Haras de Bonneval €12,000 By an outstanding sire and out of the brilliant racemare Zarkava, the Aga Khan’s homebred colt had extremely high expectations to meet on the track, and with his combination of genes; there will be more expected of him in the breeding shed too.
Successful on his debut at two in late October 2015, over a mile on heavy ground, Zarak was next seen warming up for the Poule d’Essais des Poulains with victory over the same trip in April 2016. Sent off favourite for the mile Classic, he was fifth behind The Gurkha, and then was second to Almanzor in the Prix du Jockey Club. He was also placed in the mile Prix du Moulin behind Vadamos and Zelzal that season. At four he finished a close second to Cloth Of Stars in the Group 1 Prix Ganay before making the breakthrough at Group 1 level in the Grand Prix de Saint Cloud. Zarak is the first Group 1 winner and only winner so far out of Zarkava, the unbeaten winner of seven races, five of which were Group 1 and included the Poules d’Essai des Pouliches, the Prix de Diane and the Arc. Zarkava has not been blessed with luck as a broodmare as, despite visiting Europe’s elite stallions including Sea The Stars and Frankel, Zarak is the only one of her offspring so far to make it to the track. Her first foal was a filly by Dalakhani named Zerkaza who is unraced, her second foal was a Sea The Stars colt called Zarkash who broke his leg in a gallops accident while her third foal, named Zerkar, by the multiple champion sire Galileo, is yet to race. She also has a four-year-old son of Redoute’s Choice named Zarmitan, an unnamed three-year-old Frankel filly, a two-year-old colt by Invincible Spirit and a yearling filly by Siyouni. Zarak is inbred 4S by 4D to Mr. Prospector as his sire Dubawi is descended from the Seeking The Gold line of Mr. Prospector sons, while Zarkava’s sire Zamindar is by Gone West. He is also inbred 5x5 to both Northern Dancer and Mill Reef through Northern Dancer’s sons Shareef Dancer and The Minstrel, the damsire of Zamindar, while Mill Reef’s son Shirley Heights appears in Dubawi’s pedigree with Zarkava’s featuring Doyoun.
Brametot
2014 Rajsaman – Morning Light (Law Society) Haras de Boquetot €10,000 A dual Classic winner in 2017 for Al Shaqab and Gerard Agustin Normand, also part owner of Almanzor, Brametot was the star from the first crop of Rajsaman. Brametot was successful in the Poules

new euro sires d’Essai des Poulains and Prix du Jockey Club, a feat over the last decade that has been a good indicator of stallion success. Shamardal and his son, the good young sire Lope De Vega, were victorious in both races, while Le Havre, sire of dual Classic-winning fillies Avenir Certain and Le Cressoniere from his initial crops, was second in the Poulains before taking the 1m2f Prix du Jockey Club. Rajsaman is a son of the hugely influential sire Linamix, perhaps better represented by his NH sire sons who include the full-brothers and Group 1 sires Reefscape and Martaline. Linamix was twice champion sire in France and champion broodmare sire there in 2012. Rajsaman, twice a Group 2 winner, is another sire to feature an Aga Khan connection as he was bred by the farm and sold at the end of a three-year-old season in which he beat Siyouni, for whom he was pacemaking, and Lope De Vega in the Group 2 Prix Fontainebleu. He also finished third behind Goldikova and Cirrus Des Aigles in the Group 1 Prix d’Ispahan. Brametot’s best performances were his Classic victories over a mile and 1m2f respectively, but middle-distance influences abound on his dam’s side. Morning Light, a daughter of Law Society who features as broodmare sire of Classic winners Love Divine and Scorpion, won twice in her native Germany as a three-year-old and is a half-sister to the outstanding sire Monsun. Among Manduro’s best progeny number three Melbourne Cup winners, as well as the Group 1 winners Shirocco and Vadamos, who stands his second season at Tally-Ho Stud this year, Estimate and Manduro.

Al Wukair
2014 Dream Ahead – Macheera (Machiavellian) Haras de Boquetot €8,000 Al Shaqab took the unusual step of reducing Al Wukair’s stud fee from its initial price of €15,000 to €8,000 before Christmas, but breeders should not let that put them off the Group 1-winning miler. His sire Dream Ahead stands in France again this year at Haras du Grandcamp and his advertised fee is €12,000 so it makes perfect sense to bring Al Wukair’s fee below that of his sire for his first season at stud. Bred by Ballylinch Stud, where Dream Ahead began his stallion career, Al Wukair

www.internationalthoroughbred.net
Zelzal is one of eight individual Group 1 winners sired so far by the outstanding Sea The Stars, one of the all-time greats was bought by Al Shaqab for 200,000gns at Tattersalls October Sale Book 1. Al Wukair is the best son so far of Dream Ahead and provided Europe’s champion three-year-old sprinter of 2011 with his first Group 1 winner as a sire. For his thrilling victory over Group 1 winner Thunder Snow and Inns Of Court in the Prix Jacques Le Marois, he received a Timeform rating of 123. Al Wukair beat National Defense on his first start at three in the Group 3 Prix Djebel over 7f and was third behind Churchill and Barney Roy in the 2000 Guineas. As well as his three Group 1 sprint wins and his success at two in the Group 1 Prix Morny, Dream Ahead stretched his stamina out to win the Group 1 Prix de la Foret over 7f. Al Wukair’s dam Macheera won on her debut at two over a mile and is out of the Prix de Diane winner Caerlina. What is most striking about Al Wukair is the identity of his dam sire – Machiavellian. The most successful son of Mr Prospector in Europe, Machiavellian continues to exert a strong influence on the breed through his daughters and their sons. Machiavellian is dam sire of Dark Angel, who continues his march to the elite of European sires, the brilliant Shamardal and Group 1 winner and sire Zoffany.
Zelzal
2013 Sea The Stars – Olga Prekrasa (Kingmambo) Haras du Bouquetot €8,000 Al Shaqab is consolidating its breeding interests in France and Zelzal is one of four new stallions at Sheikh Joaan al-Thani’s Haras de Bouquetot. Zelzal is one of eight individual Group 1 winners sired so far by the outstanding Sea The Stars, one of the all-time greats. Unraced as a two-year-old, Zelzal made an instant impression when winning his debut
by 6l at Deauville in 2016. Disappointing behind The Gurkha in the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, he rebounded with a first stakes win in the Group 3 Prix Paul de Moussac over a mile at Chantilly. His best performance followed in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat at the same track breaking the course record for the mile in a very impressive fashion. He finished off the season when third to Vadamos in the Group 1 Prix Jacque Le Marois, one place ahead of Zarak. The serious illness that afflicted trainer Rouget’s yard in early 2017 (see Almanzor) seemed to affect Zelzal’s performances when he returned to racing in the summer and he failed to win again. Zelzal is the second foal of the Kingmambo mare Olga Prekrasa, a winner over a mile at three in France. Olga Prekrasa is also the dam of last season’s Group 3 Prix Chloe winner Ibiza by Redoute’s Choice. Her second dam is Group Three winner State Crystal, who was third in the Yorkshire Oaks and Prix Vermeille and is the dam of nine winners and grand-dam of the Group 2 winner and Group 1 Sydney Cup runner-up Libran. It is also the family of Crystal Music, winner of the Fillies’ Mile and second in both the Coronation Stakes and Irish 1000 Guineas. She, in turn, is the dam of Dubai Success and Solar Crystal and grand-dam of Ocovango, who is now a Coolmore sire. Mr. Prospector features on both sides of Zelzal’s pedigree – he is the sire of Miswaki, the sire of blue hen Urban Sea, the dam of Sea The Stars, and as the sire of Kingmambo, dam sire of Zelzal. Nureyev and his three-parts brother Sadler’s Wells both feature on the distaff side of Zelzal’s pedigree with Nureyev as the dam sire of Kingmambo and Sadler’s Wells the damsire of Olga Prekrasa. Sea The Stars is working well with mares from the Sadler’s Well, Sharpen Up, Kingmambo and Danehill lines.
The Grey Gatsby
2011 Mastercraftsman – Marie Vision (Entrepreneur) Haras de Petit Tellier €7,000 One of three Group 1 winners from the first crop of Mastercraftsman, The Grey Gatsby retires to stud the winner of the Prix du Jockey Club and the Irish Champion Stakes, in which he beat dual Derby hero Australia. During that stand-out three-year-old season, the grey finished second in the Craven
new euro sires Stakes one place ahead of Postponed, another new sire for 2018. He went on to take the Dante before his record-breaking Classic win at Chantilly. He was finished runner-up behind Australia in the International before recording that Irish Champion triumph, his final victory. He added five Group 1 places to his tally as a four-year-old starting the season when second to Solow in the Dubai Turf and occupying the same podium position in both the Prince of Wales’s Stakes and the Eclipse. He was also again placed in the International and in the Tattersalls Gold Cup. His form tailed off after that with a second place spot behind Big Orange in the Group 2 Princess of Wales’s Stakes at Newmarket the best he achieved in 2016. A high-class horse at his best, The Grey Gatsby was awarded an official rating of 127 at his peak, making him the best horse sired so far by Mastercraftsman – the son of Danehill Dancer now stands at Coolmore for an advertised fee of €25,000 with the oldest of his better-bred crops just turned three. The Grey Gatsby is out of the Entrepreneur mare Marie Vision, who is a half-sister to Group 3 winner Steady As A Rock, by Rock Of Gibraltar. Kingston Hill, also a Group 1 winner by Mastercraftman, is out of a Rainbow Quest mare, while Amazing Maria is out of a Tale of The Cat mare.
It is under Ultra’s third dam where superstars are to be found with a trio of Guineas-winning siblings led by Fillies’ Mile, 1,000 Guineas and Champion Stakes heroine Bosra Sham Sadler’s Wells lines, Storm Cat and Rainbow Quest mares have done well with Mastercraftsman so far. Inbreeding to Mr Prospector features again in The Grey Gatsby’s pedigree although at 5S x 4D it is a little further back than that of Zelzal but it occurs through the same sires – Kingmambo and Miswaki. He is also inbred 5S x 5S x 5D to Northern Dancer and 6S x 5D x 5D to Raise A Native, the sire of Mr. Prospector and Exclusive Order, the dam sire of Marie Vision’s sire Entrepreneur.
The Grey Gatsby (grey) won twice at Group 1 level and finished in the places seven times at the top level
Ultra
2013 Manduro – Epitome (Nashwan) Haras du Logis €7,000 The only new sire retiring to Darley’s French base for 2018, the lightly raced Ultra joins his sire Manduro in Normandy where both stand for the same advertised fee. Ultra is the best juvenile by world champion Manduro, a son of Monsun, and he crowned an undefeated two-year-old season with victory in the Group 1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardère. Behind the chestnut that day were three future Group 1 winners: Galileo Gold, Johannes Vermeer and Ventura Storm. Half of Ultra’s six career starts came at two when he earned a Timeform rating of 116 for his course record time in the Longchamp Group 1, making him the highest-rated juvenile from the Monsun sire line. Ultra ran twice as a three-year-old with his seasonal reappearance second place in the Group 2 Prix Eugene Adam over 1m2f at Maisons-Laffitte the best result. A solitary start last year in the 1m1f Listed Prix Jacques Laffitte returned Ultra to the winners’ enclosure. Although Monsun is considered a source of stamina, the German powerhouse has sired Group 1 winners at a mile, including his stallion sons Manduro, Maxios and Vadamos. Ultra is the second Group 1-winning juvenile sired by Manduro after fellow Godolphin horse Mandean, who won the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. Manduro is the sire of eight individual Group 1 winners so far – the best Vazirabad being out of a Linamix mare, while the good filly Ribbons is out of the Marju mare Sister Act. On his dam’s side Ultra is related to a host of winners with some very famous names found on his page. He is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Synopsis, and out of the Nashwan mare Epitome, who is a half-sister to Calista, a Grade 2 winner in the US. Epitome is also a half-sister to Noeskis, a winner at three in France and the grand-dam of dual Group 1 winner Act One. It is under Ultra’s third dam where superstars are to be found with a trio of Guineas-winning siblings led by Fillies’ Mile, 1,000 Guineas and Champion Stakes heroine Bosra Sham (Woodman). Her full-brother Hector Protector won five times at the highest level including the Prix Morny, Poule d’Essai des Poulains and Prix Jacques Le Marois.

new euro sires Their half-brother Shanghai, a son of Procida, emulated Hector Protector by winning the Poule d’Essai des Poulains, a year after his older half-brother. Their Nijinksky half-sister Gioconda produced the Group 1 Grand Criterium, Prix Lupin and Grade 1 Secretariat Stakes winner Ciro to Woodman.
Counterattack
2012 Redoute’s Choice – Kisma (Snippets) Gestut Farhrof €6,500 Counterattack is a very interesting stallion for Germany and provides breeders with a new source of bloodlines as he is the product of two of Australia’s best stallions – Redoute’s Choice and Snippets, one of the strongest crosses currently in Australia. Shuttling from Kitchwin Hills where he has just completed his first southern hemisphere season, Counterattack is bred on the same Redoute’s Choice-Snippets cross as that of Australia’s leading young sire Snitzel. Counterattack offers German breeders a source of speed as all of his wins came over sprint distances of 5f to 6.5f. A winner over 6f during his juvenile campaign, he was also second in a pair of Group 2 contests. At three, he stepped up to Group 1 level finishing third in the Coolmore Stud Ascot Vale Stakes at Flemington and he also won the Group 3 Fred Best Classic at Doomben. He continued his Group 1 placings at four with second place behind Redzel, winner of the inaugural Everest, in the Doomben 10,000 Stakes and third in the Darley
Counterattack is bred on the same Redoute’s Choice-Snippets cross as that of Australia’s leading young sire Snitzel Kingsford-Smith BTC Cup at Eagle Farm his best results. He is a half-brother to the consistent and courageous Group 1-winning filly Red Tracer, whose victories include the Myer Empire Rose Classic at Flemington and Tattersall’s Tiara Stakes at Eagle Farm. She was also placed in five further Group 1 contests during a career that encompassed 15 victories over four seasons. Her full-brother Shellscape is also a Group 1 winner courtesy of his success in the James Boag Galaxy Handicap at Randwick and his top-level placings include third in the Ascot Vale Stakes, just like his half-brother Counterattack. Redoute’s Choice is the sire of 32 individual Group 1 winners, including champions of the calibre of Snitzel, Lanken Rupee and Miss Finland. The son of Danehill is inheritor of his sire’s mantle of Australian supreme sire and Snitzel is set to take up that mantle from Redoute’s Choice. 2013 Galileo – Memory (Danehill Dancer) Haras Montfort and Préaux €6,000 A precocious son of Galileo out of a Royal Ascot-winning mare is the vehicle for a Brexit-era entente cordiale between Britain and France with the Queen’s homebred chestnut standing in France. Speed and precocity is what this son of the incredible Galileo offers to breeders as a Group-winning juvenile out of the Queen’s Group 2 Cherry Hinton Stakes winner Memory. Recorder ran just three times during his career, all at two, and was third in a maiden on debut before winning over 7f on soft ground at Newmarket, beating subsequent Group 1 winner Ventura Storm. Trained by William Haggas, he then travelled to York for the Group 3 Acomb Stakes on soft to heavy ground and beat Cyrmic who went on to be second in the Group 1 Prix Jean Luc Lagardère. After that performance Recorder was rated 109 and on target for a Group 1 test, but injury prevented him racing any further. Recorder is bred on the prolific GalileoDanehill Dancer (Danehill) cross, which has provided so much of the great stallion’s success in recent seasons, including seven-times Group 1 heroine Minding and Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner The Gurkha whose first foals are due this spring. Memory was a Royal homebred who won the Group 3 Albany Stakes prior to her Cherry Hinton success. Her first three foals have all won with Recorder’s full-brother Call To Mind, a Listed winner who was second in the Group 2 Prix Chaudney. Her three-year-old Frankel colt Learn By Heart was Listed-placed last season. She has a two-year-old full-brother to Recorder, as well as a Dubawi yearling filly. She was covered last year by Galileo. Memory is out of the Diesis mare Nausicaa, who was placed in a Group 3 and is the dam of six more winners, including Remember Alexander by Teofilo who won the Group Three Tyros Stakes. Memory is inbred 3x3 to Sharpen Up, the dam sire of Danehill Dancer and the sire of Diesis.

new sires Attendu
2013 Acclamation – Gwenseb (Green Tune) Haras du Quesnay €5,000 On the back of a stellar year for Acclamation and his son Dark Angel, Attendu retires to stud in France as a representative of the sire line that added four new Group 1 winners last year. A Group winner every season he raced, Attendu was also third in the Group 1 Criterium International at Saint Cloud to last year’s Melbourne Cup runner-up Johannes Vermeer. Attendu won the 7f Group 3 Prix La Rochette at Longchamp during his debut season. Attendu’s best wins were all between 6f and a mile as befits a son of Acclamation out of a mare who won from 5f to a mile. At three, he won the Group 3 Prix du Palais Royal over 7f at Deauville beating Esoterique and was fifth to Limato in the Prix de la Forêt. The highlight of his four-year-old season was victory in the Group 3 mile Prix Quincey. Attendu was bred by the Wertheimers out of their Group 3-winning two-year-old Gwenseb, who was purchased as a yearling in Deauville for €40,000. So far she has bred four winners from four runners, three of them Group winners. She is the dam of the Invincible Spirit fillies Impassable, who won the Group 2 Prix Sandringham, and Listed winner Foreign Tune. Her 2014 colt by Redoute’s Choice was fourth to Brametot in last year’s Poule d’Essai des Poulains. Gwenseb has a two-year old filly called Gwendola and a yearling colt named Thirsty, both by Oasis Dream. The Wertheimers took the decision to send her to Dark Angel, Attendu’s paternal half-brother, in 2017. Further back in the family is Seville (Galileo), winner of the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap in Australia and second in both the Irish Derby and Grand Prix de Paris when trained by Aidan O’Brien. Jim Bolger’s Irish Derby and King George winner St Jovite makes an appearance in Attendu’s pedigree as Gwenseb’s damsire. Gwenseb is by Green Tune, a son of the Wertheimer’s homebred Classic winner Green Dancer, representing the sire line of Triple Crown winner Nijinsky. Acclamation is developing a good relationship with mares by Cadeaux Genereux, Selkirk, Pivotal, Green Desert, Night Shift, Rainbow Quest and Indian Ridge.
A Group 1 winner in both hemispheres, Ivanhowe represents one of the most successful sire lines in Germany as a son of Soldier Hollow and grandson of In The Wings Ectot
2011 Hurricane Run – Tonnara (Linamix) Haras de Bouquetot €5,000 A Group 1 winner at two and five, and a half-brother to a Group 1 winner, Ectot has plenty to recommend him to breeders at a fee of €5,000. Standing at Al Shaqab’s French base in partnership with Haras de Montfort et Préaux, the grandson of Montjeu is the best horse by Hurricane Run in the northern hemisphere. Ectot won the Group 1 Criterium International at Saint Cloud as a two-year-old and was also successful in the Group 3 Prix des Chenes at Longchamp. At three he began the season by defeating future Group 1 winner Karakontie in the Group 3 and also won the Group 2 Prix Niel, with future Cox Plate winner Adelaide amongst the vanquished in that Arc Trial. A disappointing four-year-old season saw Ectot moved to Todd Pletcher in the States and that was rewarded with a victory over the champion Flintshire in the 1m4f Grade 1 Joe Hirsch Turf Classic Stakes at Belmont Park. He is a half-brother to the Group 1 Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner Most Improved. The son of Lawman, two years older than Ectot, began his stallion career at Coolmore and his first crop are three-year-olds in 2018. Their dam Tonnara is out of the Listed winner Mahalia and a half-sister to Group 1-placed Johnny Barnes and to the dam of Group 3 winners Thikriyaat and Daban, who was third for John Gosden behind Winter in last year’s QIPCO 1000 Guineas. Another filly to be third in the 1,000 Guineas who features in the pedigree is Hathrah (Linamix), who also produced Prix de l’Opera third Hadaatha (Sea The Stars). Linamix is the broodmare sire of Tonnara and his other Group 1 winners as dam sire
include Classic-winning fillies Blue Bunting by Dynaformer and Natagora by Divine Light. Hugely influential sires Danehill and Surumu (damsire of Hurricane Run and of Monsun) are also in third generation of Ectot’s pedigree along with Sadler’s Wells. As his half-brother is a Group 1 winner by Lawman, Ectot may appeal to breeders with daughters of Invincible Spirit and his sons or other Green Desert line stallions with Danzig not appearing until the fourth generation of Ectot’s pedigree.
Under €5,000
Ivanhowe
2010 Soldier Hollow – Indigo Girl (Sternkoenig) Haras du Thenney €4,500 A Group 1 winner in both hemispheres, Ivanhowe represents one of the most successful sire lines in Germany as a son of Soldier Hollow and grandson of In The Wings. Soldier Hollow and Adlerflug, who is from the family of Urban Sea, are Group 1 winners and champion sires by the Irish Derby winner, while their Group 1-winning sons, which includes German second-season sire Ito, are helping to establish the In The Wings sire line as the dominant one in Germany. Amongst Soldier Hollow’s Group 1 winners are Dschingis Secret (out of Platini mare), winner of the Grosser Preis von Berlin and whose full-brother sold for €500,000 at the 2017 BBAG Select Yearling Sale. Pastorious is out of a Monsun mare and his three Group 1 wins include the Prix Ganay and Deutsches Derby. The Preis der Diana winner Serienholde (out of a Highest Honor mare) are two more of Soldier Hollow’s best progeny from his earlier, smaller crops. Ivanhowe had just one start as a two-yearold, but then won every year after that with four of those triumphs at the highest level. He was joint-champion older horse in Germany in 2014 winning the Grosser Preis von Bayern and the Grosser Preis von BadenBaden, defeating that year’s Deutsches Derby winner Sea The Moon, whose first runners are expected on the track later this year. Sent to Australia in 2015, Ivanhowe was third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup but at six and seven he took the Group 1 1m2f Doomben Cup followed by the Ranvet Rawson Stakes beating Group 1 winners Hartnell and The United States. He is out of the German Oaks third Indigo Girl by Sternkoenig.

stallion myboycharlie
That’s my boy
Stallion Myboycharlie is making his mark in two hemisphere. Sally Ann Grassick chats to those involved with the globe-trotting son of Danetime
V
ALUE FOR MONEY… it is what we are all looking for in every aspect of life, let alone when it comes to breeding horses Value – that is the resounding comment from French breeders when asked about Myboycharlie. He may not be the most fashionable, and therefore not the most commercial stallion standing in France at the moment, but his statistics speak for themselves. A recent report by website France Sire revealed this handsome son of Danetime was the most successful French-based stallion in the world in 2017 (based on number of wins internationally in every category as well as black-type placings). As this list takes into account the number of wins of a stallion’s progeny around the world, a sire such as Myboycharlie, who regularly shuttles between the two hemispheres, obviously has a huge advantage over those who remain in Europe during the off season. The Haras du Mezeray-based stallion comes out on top of this list with 230 wins to his name globally, ahead of fellow shuttler Authorized (198), Dream Ahead (165), the veteran Elusive City (163) and the ever popular Siyouni (152). Myboycharlie, who stood for a fee of A$8,800 in 2017, has been a regular shuttler to Australia, where he covers an average of 70 mares per season. He first stood at Vinery Stud and is now based at Bowness Stud, New South Wales. His time in Australia has resulted in this

Myboycharlie was very straight-forward as a two-year-old, very professional, a lovely kind, well mannered horse to deal with son of Danetime producing triple Group 1-winning racemare Jameka, who won the Group 1 Caulfield Cup by 3l in 2016 as well as finishing placed at Group 1 level on five occasions over distances ranging from a mile to a 1m4f. Myboycharlie joined the stallion band at Bowness Stud in 2017, and the stud’s owner John North explained the reasoning behind standing the 13-year-old. “We were very pleased to have the opportunity of adding a stallion of Myboycharlie’s quality to our roster,” he said. “He should appeal to plenty of breeders in our area because of his ability to produce two and three-year-old runners, as well as horses such as Jameka who trained on to become the best home-grown stayer in Australia. “We are especially keen to encourage broodmare owners with mares by sire-sons of the two great brothers
Sadler’s Wells and Fairy King.” It is of no surprise that Myboycharlie is able to produce talented two-year-olds as he was indeed one himself. He was the champion two-year-old colt in France and the third top-rated two-year-old in Europe in 2007 following his impressive success in the Group 1 Prix Morny in Deauville. He was trained in Tipperary by Tommy Stack, whose son Fozzy remembers him fondly. “Myboycharlie was very straight-forward

Myboycharlie enjoying himself in the paddock at Mezeray. Christine Dutertre at the farm describes him as “chic and very correct” as a two-year-old, very professional, a lovely kind, well mannered horse to deal with,” recalls Stack. “We knew early enough in the year that he was above average, but we didn’t think he was as good as he turned out to be. “I bought him as a yearling from Tally-Ho Stud for £54,000 at Doncaster. “He was originally owned by a syndicate of footballers from West Ham United that included Teddy Sheringham who named him after his son Charlie. “John Magnier bought the horse from
them after he won the Group 3 Angelsey Stakes at The Curragh by 7l on heavy ground. “His next start was the Morny in France and he ran a great race to quicken up well and beat Natagora by two lengths,” says Stack, who adds: “I’m glad he is doing well as a stallion now as he was a really lovely horse.” Those characteristics seem to have continued after his retirement from the track – Christine Dutertre of Haras du Mezeray describes Myboycharlie as “a very easy horse to look after with a good mentality and a super personality.”
Having started his stallion career at the National Stud in Newmarket, Myboycharlie moved to Mezeray in Normandy in 2012. In 2016, he remained in Australia and did not shuttle back to France, but by the end of that year he was top of the list of two-yearold sires in France so he made his return to Mezeray where he covered a record 143 mares in 2017. “He is a chic horse, very correct and elegant,” says Dutertre. “He is quite a big horse at 1m65 and he tends to produce very good-looking foals – even if the mare is a bit

Myboycharlie: by Danetime, he is the sire of three Grade / Grade 1-winning fillies coarse – who are forward going. “We send him some of our own mares, though we do not have a big broodmare band here on the stud, as well as those of our clients. “Obviously, he was very popular last year after his amazing results in 2016, and there has been a lot of interest from breeders once again – we hope he will cover around 70-80 mares this year at a fee of €5,000. “He is a proven sire and a pertinent choice at that price. There are a lot of good new stallions in France now, but I think he is at an attractive price for small breeders.”
A
NOTHER PERSON who agrees with those comments is Henri Bozo of Ecurie des Monceaux, who are responsible for breeding two Group winners by Myboycharlie – Sistercharlie, a Group 3 winner and second in the Group 1 Prix de Diane and Gr.1 Belmont Oaks last year, and Gr.3 Prix Djebel winner Cheikeljack. “He is a fun stallion to use as he produces horses who are successful at every age and level around the world,” says Bozo. “He is ideal for young mares who you want to ‘make’ without spending a fortune and he produces horses who are precocious with a turn of foot.
18
www.internationalthoroughbred.net
Obviously, Myboycharlie was very popular last year after his amazing results in 2016, and there has been a lot of interest from breeders once again “We have had a lot of success with young mares who we wanted to inject speed into and it has worked well. “He needs a middle-distance mare who is not too heavy and he works particularly well with the Sadlers’ Wells bloodline. “We bred Sistercharlie whose dam is by Galileo; I like to try and send those mares to a stallion who will inject some speed into the pedigree. “We also bred Cheikeljack, who is a really good-looking, fast horse, and we are hoping he will have a good year in 2018 as he stays in training.” Both Sistercharlie and Cheikeljack were
purchased from Ecurie des Monceaux at the Arqana October Yearling Sales by bloodstock agent Paul Nataf, for €12,000 and €15,000 respectively. “There are a lot of stallions on the market,” explains Nataf, “but you can buy a goodlooking yearling by Myboycharlie for around €15,000, which isn’t the case with other sires. “He has had a lot of success as a sire, but fortunately for me that has not changed his value at the sales. “Sistercharlie walked very well as a yearling, is from a family whom I know going back four or five generations and has Galileo as a broodmare sire. “I bought Cheikeljack from Ecurie de Monceaux too, who was a good-looking yearling who walked well. I always think it is worth buying cheap horses from good breeders. “It worked for me two years in a row but unfortunately, I didn’t find a Myboycharlie yearling in their draft last year! “I’m not a fan of any one stallion in particular, but there are sires who are capable of breeding good horses and those that are not: Myboycharlie is part of the former group. With top level-winning progeny that includes not only Sistercharlie, Cheikeljack and Jameka but also Group 1 Beverly D Stakes heroine Euro Charline, Australian Group 1 winner Peggy Jean and Group 1 Prix Saint Alary-placed Camprock, there is little doubt that Myboycharlie is capable of breeding a good horse and, in particular, a talented filly. Given that overall the average price for one of his daughters at yearling sales in Europe is just over £26,000, I would say that is indeed very good value for money.

Stallion business Jocelyn de Moubray reports on a French stallion sector that has changed beyond recognition over the last eight years

T
HE FRENCH STALLION BUSINESS has been completely transformed over the last eight years. In 2010 only three stallions in France covered more than 100 mares – all were new that year as Elusive City had been moved from Ireland to stand at the Haras d’Etreham for €20,000, while Soldier Of Fortune and Le Havre started their stud careers that year at €10,000 and €5,000 respectively.
Kendargent: the son of Kendor, who began covering off a fee of €1,000, was one of the first to begin the transformation of the French stallion industry

french stallions
The Haras de la Cauvinière’s (now named Haras de Montfort & Préaux) Le Havre was the busiest of the country’s Flat stallions covering 146 mares. Move forward to 2017 and it is a different world altogether, despite the fact that the size of the total French foal crop has remained broadly stable between 2010 and 2018. In 2017, 13 French sires each covered more than 100 mares, six of whom – Wootton Bassett, Kendargent, Le Havre, Siyouni, Intello and Shalaa – stood at €20,000 or more, and three more Dabirsim, Rajsaman and Olympic Glory stood for between €8,000 and €15,000. Dabirsim and Siyouni, who covered 198 and 191 mares in 2017, were both among the seven busiest Flat sires in Europe. Stallions based in France have never been this popular, or this successful. Over the last three covering seasons eight French-based sires have covered a total of more than 300 mares – Siyouni 605, Rajsaman 552, Le Havre 543, Olympic Glory 445, Dabirsim 439, Kendargent 427, Anodin 331 and Wootton Bassett 308. No French-based sire has ever covered so many mares in a three-year period – for instance, at the height of their success at the beginning of the century Linamix and Anabaa stood at between €40,000 and €45,000 and covered between 280 and 300 mares in a three-year period. In 2018, Siyouni becomes the most expensive stallion ever in France and, even at €75,000, he is heavily oversubscribed. Intello has returned to England for the 2018 season, while Charm Spirit has made the opposite move. There are numerous new sires in France, including at least 13 Group 1 winners – Al Wukair, Almanzor, Brametot, Ectot, Ivanhowe, Pastorius, Reliable Man (who has moved from Germany), Toronado (moved from Britain), The Grey Gatsby, Ultra, Wings Of Eagles, Zarak and Zelzal – as well as many other Group winners, such as Attendu and Recorder. There may well be 20 or more French sires who will cover 100 mares or more in 2018.
Commercial change began with Kendargent
This transformation began back in 2008 when Kendargent retired to the Haras de Colleville. At the time, of course, nobody realized that this non-stakes-winning son of Kendor who commanded €1,000 stud fee was
Wings Of Eagles: the Derby hero is one of 13 Group 1 winners retiring to France for the 2018 season
going to be of any significance at all. Kendargent’s first expensive crop, conceived at €15,000, are three-year-olds in 2018 and he has three big books from higher fees still to come. The remarkable success of his small early crops made Kendargent a commercial success, however his 2017 yearlings struggled in the market recording an average of around €30,000 after three years in which he had a European average between €50,000 and €60,000.
... starting with his two-year-olds in 2018 Le Havre will have three large crops from fees going from €20,000 in 2015 to €60,000 in 2017
This is largely the inevitable consequence of numbers. At the beginning Kendargent covered small books most of whom were supplied by his owner Guy Pariente, but by 2012 and 2013 he covered large books of mares at €4,000 and €6,000. Objectively the results from these large books continue to be far better than average, but over the last two seasons there has also been a large number of ordinary winners by Kendargent too. At the time of writing Kendargent was the leading sire in France by number of wins with 85 from Siyouni with 82. Kendargent’s foals of 2013 and 2014 include 23 black-type performers headed by the Group winners Jimmy Two Times and Soleil Marin, both of whom remain in training with André Fabre for Godolphin with the potential to win top races in 2018. His 2017 two-year-olds included the Listed winners Armoricaine and King Bubble as well as the promising stakes-placed sprinter Ken Colt. Kendargent’s commercial standing will certainly be very different by the time of the 2020 yearling sales, if there are no top horses over the next three years he will be definitely downgraded, however, a Group 1 winner or two and he could just as easily return to the

top drawer of France’s established sires.
Le Havre got in on the act in 2010
The next of France’s new top sires to retire to stud was Le Havre in 2010. The son of Noverre covered large books during his first three years at stud at €5,000, mainly due to the support of his owner Gerard Augustin Normand. The success of these first three crops, headed by three Group 1 winners in La Cressonniere, Avenir Certain and Suedois, established his reputation. Starting with his two-year-olds in 2018, Le Havre will have three large crops from fees going from €20,000 in 2015 to €60,000 in 2017. His fourth and fifth crops were smaller, he had only 55 three-year-olds in 2017 and will have a 100 in 2018. These include the promising Tigre Du Terre in England and Chailloue in France. Le Havre’s progeny have rarely been high-class two-year-olds and, in most cases, they have progressed from two to three, and over distances of a mile and further. Le Havre has 136 two-year-olds in 2018 who sold for up to 325,000gns in 2017 and who are in the care of many of Europe’s top trainers.
Siyouni: an explosive future?
Siyouni retired to the Haras de Bonneval in 2011. Unlike either Kendargent or Le Havre right from the beginning the son of Pivotal has been a sire of two-year-olds. He had two two-year-old Group winners in his first crop, Ervedya and Souvenir Delondres, and so by 2015 his fee was up from the €7,000 he stood at for his first four years to €20,000. His second crop included the Group-winning two-year-old Trixia, and the top three-year-olds Spectre and Volta, his third crop were three in 2017 and included his best colt to date, the Royal Ascot winner Le Brivido, while remarkably his fourth crop looks as if it could be his best to date. He was leading two-year-old sire in France by money won and number of wins, ahead of Dabirsim and Kendargent, and his best win came in England with the Group 1 winner Laurens. In France, Sacred Life was an impressive Group winner and was favourite for the abandoned Group 1. Siyouni has produced four crops of threeyear-olds to date each of which was far better than the average and he has achieved this while covering at €7,000 in France. Over the next three years his profile
22

Laurens: the daughter of Siyouni winning the Fillies’ Mile. She is now on a BHA rating of 113
is going to change dramatically as he has covered some 600 mares at fees going from €20,000 in 2015 to €45,000 in 2017.
Wootton Bassett: sire of an exceptional horse
The fourth of the new wave of French sires was Wootton Bassett who retired to the Haras d’Etreham in 2012. The son of Iffraaj struggled to attract support during his first two seasons at stud and his first two crops had only 17 foals each.
Few stallions ever produce a horse as good as Almanzor and Wootton Bassett covered a large book in 2016 and was then resyndicated and covered 113 mares
These included the European champion Almanzor, his useful full-sister Troarn and the Listed winner Do Re Mi Fa Sol. However, as soon as his first foals reached the market his fortunes began to change and he covered about 70 mares at €4,000 in 2014 and 2015. Few stallions ever produce a horse as good as Almanzor and Wootton Bassett covered a large book in 2016 and was then resyndicated and covered 113 mares at €20,000 in 2017 and is fully booked at the same fee for 2018. Wootton Bassett’s third crop of two-yearolds suggested that he, too, is going to be an important sire. His seven two-year-old winners in 2017 included Mamba Noire, who was Groupplaced at The Curragh, Newmarket and York, the stakes-placed Patascoy and Wootton, who was one of the best two-year-old colts of his generation in France. The Henri Alex Pantall-trained Wootton won a Deauville maiden in August by 6l and then having been purchased by Godolphin won a Listed race on the same track in October by 5l.
Champion first-season sire Dabirsim
The next potential French star is Dabirsim, who stood his first two seasons at Gestüt
french stallions
Karlshof in Germany in 2014 and 2015 before moving to the Haras de Grandcamp in 2016. The son Hat Trick was France’s champion first-season sire in 2017 with 15 winners of 17 races headed by Different League, a Group winner at Royal Ascot and Group 1 placed in Deauville and Newmarket later in the season, and the Listed winner Coeur de Beaute. The son of Hat Trick is clearly a very promising stallion and he was oversubscribed at the new fee of €30,000 for 2018 after a spectacularly successful yearling sales season when 41 of his progeny sold for an average of nearly €100,000, including two individuals who made €500,000 at the Goffs Orby and the Arqana October sales. Dabirsim sired a total of 18 two-year-old winners from 53 runners and remarkably Velma Valento became the 11th to make a winning debut at Deauville in December. One two-year-old crop is not sufficient
Few first-season sires have two or more Group winners, and most of these go on to further success as in recent years Siyouni and Showcasing have evidence to judge any first-season sire accurately and Dabirsim’s progeny will have to confirm their promise in 2018 if his next crop of yearlings is to sell as well.
Narella (Reliable Man) won a Group 3 in Germany in the summer, she is now trained by Roger Varian
There is a suspicion that most of his progeny are fast horses, many of their wins came over 6f, and aside from Different League none of the other debutant winners appeared to progress significantly afterwards. Only two of the 11 debutant winners won again and these were both in June. Different League will be prepared for top races in 2018 by her new trainer Aidan O’Brien and while Dabirsim’s second crop was significantly smaller than his first, he covered two big books at Grandcamp in 2016 and 2017 and there will be plenty of Dabirsim’s to run between now and the 2020 yearling sales.
Reliable Man: starting out in France
Among Europe’s leading first-season sires another who has moved from Germany to France is Reliable Man, who after four seasons at Gestüt Röttgen is standing at the Haras du Thenney in 2018. The son of Dalakhani sired only two winners from 20 runners, but these two were both Group winners and included Erasmus, the best two-year-old colt in Germany and the 8l winner of the Preis des Winterfavoriten, and the filly Narella. She won her 7f Group race impressively at Baden Baden and is now in training with Roger Varian for Teruya Yoshida. Few first-season sires have two or more Group winners, and most of these go on to further success as in recent years Siyouni and Showcasing have. It is even more unusual for a sire to achieve this in Germany where there are only four two-year-old Group races, and especially for a horse such as Reliable Man who didn’t race at two himself and was a middle-distance performer. Reliable Man’s other runners included several who showed above average ability – like Senza Fine in France and Ernesto, Leevje and Moon Relation who were all placed in valuable sales races in Germany. Reliable Man has three crops of around 50 foals to come and will be well supported in 2018.
Pedro The Great: the surprise
Second and third in the leading French-based first-season sire by prize-money was Al Shaqab’s Style Vendome and the Haras de la Haie Neuve’s Pedro The Great.

Areion: champion in Germany
W
E ALL LIKE something new and in particular, the bloodstock industry worldwide gravitates towards young and upcoming sires. But sometimes older is best and thus it proved in Germany last year with Areion (to stud 2001) landing champion sire honours from a clutch of younger rivals. It was no fluke and Gestüt Etzean’s multiple champion sire also had the highest percentage of winners to runners than any other European stallion. His leading earners in Germany included Palace Prince, winner of a Group 2 and a Group 3 both at Baden Baden, the Group 3 and Listed winner Aristica, the Hamburg Group 3 scorer Shy Witch and Wonnemond who won a Dusseldorf Group 3 first time out then capped a fine season with victory in the valuable (£230,000) Group 2 Topkapi Mile at Veliefendi. Areion finished the year with German progeny earnings of €1,017,821 and with 59 winners from 105 runners. In second place, over €250,000, behind was Gestüt Schlenderhan’s Adlerflug who had a special year with a brace of Group 1 winners in Iquitos (Grosser Dallmayr Preis G1) and Lacazar whose four wins were headed by her Prix der Diana (G1) victory at Dusseldorf. Adlerflug only had 38 German runners, but 16 of those won 22 races and yielded €742,512. Third-placed Soldier Hollow (Gestüt Auenquelle) also had a fine year with his leading performer Dschingis Secret scoring three times at Group 2 level, winning the Group 1 Grosser Preis von Berlin (beating Hawkbill) and running a good sixth beaten 7l by Enable in the Arc. Next up is Rathbarry-based Shirocco whose seven winners from just 18 runners, included the Deutsches Derby (G1) winner Windstoss, who also won the Group 1 Preis von Europa. Germany lost its champion first-season sire Reliable Man to France, but runner-up Maxios made a very solid start to his second career.

The Poule d’Essai des Poulains winner Style Vendome had eight winners in France the best of whom was probably the Francis Rohaut-trained filly Princess Gold who won two of her three starts in the south west. Pedro The Great, a half-brother to Footstepsinthesand by Henrythenavigator, was the surprise of the group producing three high-class horses in Fatale Bere, Feralia and Bonita Fransisca from a covering fee of just €3,000 standing in the west of France. Pedro The Great has 39 two-year-olds in 2018 and has covered enough mares in recent years to maintain a presence until the progeny from his 2018 covering reach the tracks.
Strength in depth: Rajsaman, Rio De La Plata and Myboycharlie
Before moving to sires without runners there are some other French-based sires who could return to prominence between now and 2020. The Haras de Grandcamp’s Evasive, a Cheveley Park Stud-bred son of Elusive Quality, made a promising beginning with his first crop and as a result has 115 two-year-olds in 2018. The Haras de Preaux and Monfort’s Rajsaman has already produced a top horse in the dual Classic winner Brametot and has been covering large books in recent years and has around 150 two-year-olds in 2018. Rio De La Plata had three Listed winners in 2017 and will continue to attract support. Motivator, Manduro and Authorized, whose first French crop is three in 2018, are all
Pedro The Great has 39 two-year-olds in 2018 and has covered enough mares in recent years to maintain a presence proven Group 1 sires who have been well supported in recent years. Myboycharlie returned to the Haras du Mezeray in 2017 and his second French crop of three-year-olds, included Sistercharlie, a top filly who was unlucky not to win the Prix de Diane.
Olympic Glory yearlings well received
The French sires who have yet to have runners include the 2018 first-season sires Anodin, Charm Spirit and Olympic Glory. The market received Olympic Glory’s yearlings the best as they averaged more than four times his initial stud fee of €15,000, but the other two sold well enough and all three have the numbers to make a mark. Those with their first yearlings in 2018 include the Haras du Logis’s Sidestep and Hunter’s Light, and the Haras du Petit Tellier’s Elvstroem. Al Shaqab’s champion two-year-old Shalaa was by far the busiest of the new French sires of 2017 covering 158 mares but Goken, Dariyan and Scissor Kick were also well supported at Huderie, Bonneval and Etreham.

photo pick FRENCH-BORN jockey Christophe Lemaire, who has been based in Japan since 2016, was the country’s champion jockey in 2017. He rode 199 winners, including 68 stakes race victories. Behind him in joint-second was Keita Tosaki and Mirco Demuro on 171 winners. The only other jockey to ride over 1oo winners in the year was Yuichi Fukunaga on 116. Lemaire is seen here aboard Rey De Oro (green and white colours) finishing second in the Japan Cup, Tokyo in November. In black and orange colours is the Japanese jockey Yutaka Take on Japan’s leading horse Kitasan Black. Australian jockey Hugh Bowman won the race on Cheval Grand, a son of Heart’s Cry.
