THE SUCCESS OF Invincible Spirit as a progenitor of successful stallions ensures a high demand for sons that show high-class form on the track and, in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes winner Profitable, Darley acquired a colt with a higher rating than his old man.

A tough and durable sprinter who aged well, Profitable hails from a speedy family and offers an outcross for mares from the Sadler’s Wells line – his dam Dani Ridge is a daughter of Indian Ridge, himself a winner of the King’s Stand Stakes.

A Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling, Profitable was purchased by his trainer Clive Cox for 95,000gns and made his racecourse debut in June of his two-year-old season. Racing six times, all at 5f, he won once and was second on four occasions.

At three, Profitable won the 5f Listed Westow Stakes and finished second in the 5f Listed Scurry Stakes.

A 5f specialist, he returned at four in his best form stringing together a hat-trick of 5f Group race victories that culminated in success in the King’s Stand.

As a five-year-old his best place finish was a second to Lady Aurelia in the Group 1 King’s Stand Stakes, giving the flying filly 11lb. He was also second to Battaash in the Group 2 King George Stakes and signed off with a close third behind the same foe in the Group 1 Prix de l’Abbaye.

Profitable is a half-brother to Group 3 Summer Stakes winner Ridge Ranger, to Danidh Dubai, who was third in the Group 3 Albany Stakes and is the dam of a Listed winner and two Listed-placed winners, as well as to the dam of Listed winner Archer’s Dream. His dam Dani Ridge is a winning full-sister to Group 3 Diomed Stakes winner Blomberg and the family goes back to US champion two-year-old colt Hurry To Market and Grade 1 Spinster Stakes winner Sale Day.

He covered 129 mares in his first book and his second book increased to 143 mares, an impressive achievement.

Profitable was supported by a wide variety of breeders from John Tuthill to Miss Pat O’Kelly, John McEnery and Paul McCartan. The mares he was sent included Barouche Stud’s Caressor, a full-sister to leading North American sire Tapit, who produced a filly by Profitable. The O’Callaghans of Mountarmstrong Stud also have a Profitable yearling filly, theirs being out of their Group 3 winner Obama Rule, a Danehill Dancer grand-daughter of Arc heroine Detroit.

His foals were popular at the sales and his average of 32,596gns, which is more than three times his covering fee, is even more impressive when the number of foals sold (51 offered) is taken into account.

Oak Leaf Stud’s filly out of Miss Azeza was the most expensive selling for €205,000 to Hamish Macauley at Goffs November Foal Sale. The filly is a half-sister to Listed King Charles II Stakes winner and Middle Park Stakes (G1) second Jash. Airlie Stud’s colt out of Reign sold for €120,000 to Lynn Lodge Stud. The half-brother to Gold Tail, an Italian Listed winner, comes from the family of Group 1 winner and sire Red Clubs.

It was a filly who achieved the highest price at Tattersalls December Foal Sale, courtesy of a half-sister to the Group 1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches and Sun Chariot Stakes-placed Irish Rookie selling for 105,000gns to Haras de Saint Pair.
