Botanica 20 June - 8 July 2013
In this inspired group exhibition Mother Nature plays muse to leading artists Paul Coney and Vancouver based Gabryel Harrison. Homage is paid in brushstrokes by a stellar supporting cast which includes Melbourne artist Tracy Ellerton, Eugenea, Patricia Payne, Ted Sherwen, Christine Webb, Turi Park, Simon Williams, Bruce Treloar and others. A small collection of brilliant oils from the Estate of Kelliher prize winning artist, Gaston de Vel provide a chorus of impressionist colour. As winter approaches the paintings of Botanica steal the show with warmth and vitality. Works of art which contribute to a lifting of spirits. We look forward to welcoming you.

Paul Coney Profusion de Rosa, Oil on canvas 101 x 198 cm floods the senses to such a degree that one almost inhales the heady perfume of its full-blown blooms. Bellshaped Foxgloves and old fashioned Snapdragons intertwine with pink and amethyst coloured roses encircled by dew dropped foliage. Two tiny buds, at varying stages of unfoldment reflect nature’s ongoing renewal. Confronted with such natural beauty one can hardly bear to turn away.
Créme de la Créme, Oil on canvas 122 x 153 cm, is the fifth work in Coney’s White Paintings series. Here Coney’s tonal mastery is at its most apparent. Whilst referred to as a White Painting these works are so much more. In Creme de la Creme Coney chooses an elegantly restrained palette with tones of gold and shades of grey. Glorious white peonies and Casablanca lillies tumble from the canvas.

Christine Webb We are delighted to introduce the contemporary still life oils of Christine to the New Zealand market. Since 2011 Christine has divided her time between Sydney and Sansepolcro, Italy exhibiting with much success in both hemispheres. Born in 1954 Christine studied at Sydney University’s College of the Arts before embarking on a dynamic career as art director, publisher, journalist and photographer. Having spent time in Sorrento, Victoria, where she painted and taught, the family moved to Italy in 2000. In this suite of blue paintings, the artist creatively endows the ever-popular genre of still life art with new energy. Familiar, well-loved household objects are displayed to great effect against losely painted backgrounds achieving a unique blend of the traditional and contemporary.

Of this work, Tree of Life the artist says: William Morris’s repetitive flower and leaf patterns fascinate me. In my painting I have achieved my own style where I repeat the pattern of flowers, leaves and branches into a spreading tree that gives shelter to birds and protection to the various flowers beneath. My spreading tree is highlighted by a gold leaf background which represents mottled sunlight.

Turi Park
(Detail)
This dappled canvas was inspired by a winter visit to Pourere Beach Waiararpa by the artist and his family, of which Turi Park writes: This morning my lad Jack was up and into the day with the rooster crow. I thought we could slip out for a wander and let the others keep sleeping. We tip-toed out under the sprawling oaks along the meanders of the creek. Just at the far point of our walk I looked ahead to see Jack in a shaft of early light, under the gleaming new growth of the trees, lit by the early sun. In my painting young Jack is examining an acorn and the future beams up above. To the left of this picture is an old Maori på site, which was then a settlers’ church and is now a cemetery. I like Jack’s energy, he’s into the new day like the early bird and I’ve always liked to explore these half wild places as life goes on all around and have done so since I was a boy with my dad, and now in turn with my boy.
