BILLY APPLE (1935 - 2021) From a Private Collection, 2018 UV-impregnated inks on canvas 30 x 30
Estimate $15,000 - 25,000 PROVENANCE Private Collection, Auckland In Wellington City Art Gallery’s seminal 1991 exhibition As Good As Gold, Billy Apple, Art Transactions, 1981-1991 you might have been excused for not noticing the work From a Private Collection, 1991 at a mere 133 x191mm in shades of grey. It would have looked vanishingly small and insignificant on the vast gallery wall against works like From the BNZ Art Collection, 1988 in its bold corporate colours at 1524 x 1067mm or the From the Fay, Richwhite Collection, 1991 on its substrate of kevlar from KZ-7’s sail at 1156 x 2502mm. Further the shades of grey in the Golden Section (61.8% and 38.2% of black) work have seemed shadow like and recessive. From the Collection works unmistakably associate the collector with the artist, Bill Apple. In a collaboration between the two, colours, substrates and subject matters are agreed; the collector is as strongly identified as the artist. But not all collectors are extroverts and want to have themselves so publicly hung upon a wall.
The Private Collector needed something that spoke about them as anonymous, avoiding the glare of the spotlight, the collector whose ownership is identified only as ‘from a private collection’ when their works are loaned for a gallery exhibition. The scale of the work and the shades of grey used are fundamental to identifying this work with its private collector owner. From a Private Collection, 2018 was a collaboration between the artist and the collector in direct lineage from the 1991 work of the same title. The format was updated to reflect the artist’s current practice and the shades for background and lettering reversed. It is a particularly apt recognition of the long collaboration between the two that was both intensely private and unacknowledged by people around the artist.

Estimate $5,000 - 6,000 PROVENANCE From a Private Collection This work marked 45 years of the Billy Apple brand and its new trademark status Around this period Billy was becoming more reluctant to sign his works saying that his Conceptual work did not need his signature to be a Billy Apple. Unlike the graphite signature on this work, Billy’s 50th birthday work was untouched by the artist’s hand.

08 BILLY APPLE (1935 - 2021) PAID: The Artist Has to Live Like Everybody Else, 1993 Offset lithograph, original Southern Cross invoice, unique, 56.5 x 42 Signed
N.B. This is the first of this series and is signed. other examples were not Estimate $1,000 - 2,000

09 BILLY APPLE (1935 - 2021) Cut Lithograph, edition of 13/25, 58 x 77.5 Signed & dated 1964 Estimate $10,000 - 15,000
PROVENANCE From a Private Collection Warwick Brown invited the collector to transact the first of the ongoing series. The collector agreed and paid the invoice at the Southern Cross office. For Billy Apple’s Transactions Series, the collector had to accept the proposition that the artist had to live like everybody else, the dilemma being the artist had no intention to live like everybody else.
PROVENANCE From a Private Collection Cut was printed by Roy Crosset at the Royal College of Art in London in early 1964, just prior to Billy permanently moving from London to New York. Billy described Roy as a ‘tradesman printer’. He was a master printer and he used a small scale proofing off-set lithograph printer to produce this work. Roy printed a number of other early works for Billy. Billy brushed the ink directly onto the zinc plate; a rare example of this ‘artist’s hand’ on the finished work. The paper chosen was hand made. The whole process was directed by Billy and an edition of 25 numbered and signed (in graphite) works were printed.
Billy had met Andy Warhol on this second trip to New York in 1962. Warhol was to embrace the technologies of mechanical reproduction as Billy did with Cut and Billy continued to do so for the rest of his life. The green Orchard Services canvas is an example of this where the concepts of the work are beautifully captured by utilising an industrial process subverted for art, UV impregnated pigment on canvas. Billy always sought out the best technicians and the latest technologies. Ref: Billy Apple His Life & Works Christina Barton

BILLY APPLE (1935 - 2021) Class 44 Orchard Services UV-impregnated ink on canvas. 38 x 24
Estimate $2,000 - 4,000
PROVENANCE From a Private Collection ` Acquired directly from the Artist Class 44 Orchard Services is part of the Trademark Classes series 2009-2014. There was a series of 8 classes with the initial group printed at size 1000 x 618m. This size is of the ‘Golden Section’ where you take a square from the rectangle and are left with a rectangle that you can take a square from and are left with a rectangle... ad infinitum.
The collector had known Billy for close on 30 years until his death and worked closely with Billy Apple over a number of years from 2005, with the intention of commercialising an apple to be branded ‘Billy Apple’. This work was gifted by Billy Apple to the collector as a token of gratitude for his involvement in this project.
Billy used this ratio in many of his works. This work is of the same proportions but reduced to a more domestic scale, it was made using the same printing techniques as were a number of Billy’s works in the 2000’s. It’s likely unique at this scale.

62 MICHAEL SMITHER (b. 1939) Mother & Child Pencil on paper 41 x 49 Signed Estimate $1,000 - 1,500 PROVENANCE Collection of Sarah Smither
The tradition of life drawing often shows the nude posed and displayed. While Michael trained to render the figure anatomically, muscle and bone under skin ,he was also influenced by painter’s like Stanley Spencer and Bonnard and the intimacy they gave to domestic subjects-ie Bonnard “ Wife in the bath”. As a young father Michael was able to observe and record first hand the moments of understanding that became a huge part of his vocation as an artist. These drawings began to grow into paintings of domestic life. Fascinated by the innocence and determination, the demand for attention- the child features foremost. While aware that some may find these images confronting, even though part of every parent’s experience, the artist is not one to uphold society’s double standards so can only paint with the eyes of truth . In these times of sexualisation, the body as means rather than a container of soul, how does the viewer react now? Through out art history the mother and child have been paramount as the expression of what it is to be a human being- the representation of life’s very way of making new life. With unwanted clarity I see myself in this work as we all once were, innocent, natural and unbowed- unaware of the evils set to enslave us. Sarah Smither

DOUGLAS MACDIARMID (1922 - 2020) Creatures in Space VII Watercolour 35 x 25.5 Signed, inscribed & dated 1968
Estimate $800 - 1,200 Part of a major meditation on the “Human condition”, this series was inspired by surfers and sun baskers at one with nature at Auckland’s Piha Beach – where Douglas’ parents lived at the time. Worked in both watercolour and oil, Douglas cryptically noted in his battered painting record journal that the subject was an ‘old couple naked on dark’ [background]. It is the natural counterbalance to a youthful pair representing hope in Creatures in Space – Beginning 1967. Creatures in Space VII came to New Zealand for MacDiarmid’s 1969 solo exhibition at Suter Art Gallery, Nelson. Listed in the show catalogue as No 24, $40.00. 131

Important & Rare Art
COLLECTABLE ART
Important & Rare auctions are the proven, preeminent sale category for major works of art offered for sale in New Zealand. These auctions take place three times annually. As we fast approach our 50th year in business, experience continues to equal results. 2014 saw Important & Rare auctions realise five of New Zealand’s top ten auction prices. The following year saw new records set with the two top prices in Auckland achieved. With the addition of the record $1.377 million paid for a C F Goldie in April’s 2016 sale, International Art Centre achieved the three highest art auction prices in New Zealand’s history. Due to an appreciative, and greatly valued clientele of nationwide and international buyers and sellers we look forward to breaking new ground.
The buzz generated by our Collectable Art auctions reflects the popularity of these sales: an event at which seasoned connoisseurs and budding collectors alike converge to appreciate one of the most eclectic and diverse offerings available to the market. Works span the vital period from mid-century modernism through to the cutting-edge of today’s Contemporary art in New Zealand. This sale category is an increasingly significant event in our auction calendar. Offering a number of lowerpriced works from highly-sought after artists in print and edition form, as well as quality works from artists whose presence on the secondary market is just beginning to crystallise.

SINGLE OWNER COLLECTION From time to time, the secondary market is fortunate enough to be exposed to one of those rare collections which transcends the value of its individual works of art, and stands to represent something iconic in its entirety. Our team is well-versed in the process of offering single-owner collections for sale, and take pride in the process of curating a single-owner sale when the opportunity arises. We offer a targeted marketing campaign and maximise the use of both electronic and print-based collateral to effectively showcase such collections to maximum effect. The strong networks we have established locally and internationally are reflected in some of the private collections which have been entrusted to us in recent years.
ART AT HOME ONLINE AUCTIONS A quick, easy and reliable solution to affordable consignments. During the 2020 nationwide lockdowns we stayed connected to our clients, keeping them close to our art. The time was spent productively, resulting in the development of our own online bidding platform and App, successfully auctioning works of art with no exhibition viewing, no printed catalogue, while using state-of-the-art technology. All transactions were contactless and we reduced our carbon footprint along the way. While the personal service, excitement and atmosphere of our famous live Parnell Road auctions remain and will continue to grow, the success of this online only platform has encouraged us to retain this as a permanent sale category.
