International Art Centre 202 Parnell Road, Auckland
Following the success of our July Important & Rare Art auction, which was the highest grossing sale so far this year, International Art Centre invites entries for our final live auction of the year.
Early entries include two significant Colin McCahon paintings. Illustrated above, ‘Five (Russell Finnemore & Colin McCahon)’ appears on the market after it was last seen at the 1965 The Group Show in Christchurch. This painting and another by the artist are early highlights of our forthcoming sale.
The auction also includes significant works by Charles F Goldie, Rita Angus, Allen Maddox, Michael Smither, Ray Ching, John Walsh, Tony Fomison and Michael Hight. An international highlight includes a work by Dora Maar (1907 - 1997) with impeccable provenance. Maar was a painter, poet and romantic partner of Pablo Picasso.

One of Australia’s foremost modern artists, George Johnson pioneered abstraction in the country in the 1950s with geometric works that possess a forceful clarity.
Born in New Zealand, Johnson was a protégé of Theo Schoon, who introduced him to international trends in art such as Bauhaus, De Stijl, Constructivism, and Suprematism.
The artist moved to Melbourne in 1951, and his early paintings reflect the post-war scarcity. Inexpensive and available materials like burlap, house paint, and Masonite board lend these works their characteristically textured surfaces.
After traveling to Peru in 1972, Johnson spent much of the next decade producing a series known as “The Brown” or “Peruvian Paintings.” Works such as Untitled (1975) employ bold, organic lines over earthy tones.
Johnson’s work has been exhibited widely in Australia and New Zealand and is in important national collections, including the National Gallery of Australia and the National Gallery of Victoria.

Important & Rare auctions are the proven, preeminent sale category for major works of art offered for sale in New Zealand. These auctions take place three times annually. As we fast approach our 50th year in business, experience continues to equal results. 2014 saw Important & Rare auctions realise five of New Zealand’s top ten auction prices. The following year saw new records set with the two top prices in Auckland achieved. With the addition of the record $1.377 million paid for a C F Goldie in April’s 2016 sale, International Art Centre achieved the three highest art auction prices in New Zealand’s history. Due
