17 BILLY APPLE Untitled, 1969 Neon light and box, edition of 10, 33. x 45.5 Signed on original artist’s label Estimate $4,000 - 8,000
Untitled was commissioned by contemporary art dealer Marian Goodman for Multiples, New York. Goodman established Multiples in 1965 to publish prints, multiples and books initially by leading American artists such at Roy Lichenstein and Andy Warhol. Billy Apple was one of the first artists to use neon as a conceptual art form, typically breaking new ground. Billy Apple says The Pasadena Art Museum, renamed and now known as the Norton Simon Museum had acquired an edition of Untitled. Barrie Bates was born in Auckland in 1935. By 1962, based in London he had created a new identity as Billy Apple and, as a member of the Young Contemporaries was at the vanguard of British Pop art. In 1964, Billy Apple crossed the Atlantic, exhibiting regularly in New York's museums and galleries such as Leo Castelli Gallery. 22
From 1969 until 1973 he established and ran Apple, one of the first alternative exhibition spaces, showing his own work, and that of other avant-garde artists. In 1974 London's Serpentine Gallery hosted a survey of his work and in 2007 Billy Apple became a registered trademark. Billy Apple is widely represented Internationally in public collections such as the Guggenheim Museum, New York, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit, The Chrysler Museum of Art, Norfolk, Virginia and the Mayor Gallery, London. He is represented in major New Zealand art institutions, such as Te Papa Tongarewa, Museum of New Zealand, Wellington; Auckland Art Gallery, Toi o Tamaki, Auckland and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, New Plymouth.

BRENT WONG The Inquiry Acrylic on board 63 x 105 Signed & dated 1970 Inscribed verso
Provenance: Private Collection, Auckland Estimate $55,000 - 75,000 Even though there is a picturesque charm to ‘The Inquiry, with its open sky, serene sand dunes and sea view, there is also a palpable sense of isolation and loss. The work seems haunted by powerful feelings and undercurrents; and Wong’s reputation as New Zealand’s under-rated surrealist alerts us to the probability of the scene’s symbolism. While Wong’s Surrealist antecedents are from early 20th century Europe, there is something distinctly of his own time in the gesture of staging his psychological drama on a local sandy shore. With the relation of the house to the sand there are echoes of similarly powerful and symbolic scenes in movies which were released in the years immediately prior to Wong’s painting; and these may shed coincidental light on Wong’s symbolism. In Hiroshi Teshigahara’s ‘The Woman in the Dunes’ (1964) a school teacher is entrapped in a house deep within a sand quarry that constantly threatens to engulf the house and its other occupant, the woman of the title, who must dig the sand in return for water from the villagers above. It is a vision of a suffocating, claustrophobic hell; and yet it becomes a world that the man adapts to and chooses to inhabit.
In the closing scene of Franklin J. Schaffner’s ‘Planet of the Apes’ (1968) the Earth astronaut George Taylor and his companion Nova follow the shoreline of the Forbidden Zone and eventually discover the beachcovered remains of the Statue of Liberty, revealing that the supposedly alien planet is actually postapocalyptic Earth. Realising that he is doomed to remain at a destination that is both alien and his former home, Taylor falls to his knees in despair and anger. What both movies share is the powerful visual trope of sand dunes engulfing an object symbolising the impossibility of return. The house in the dunes and the whole planet of the apes dominate and constantly remind that hope for somewhere else has been extinguished. But even in this bleak realisation there is a kernel of hope, perhaps as small as a grain of sand, but hope all the same: that there is the possibility of something new from within even troubling present circumstances. It is a sentiment that seems to be shared by Wong, where the foreground post which may mark an imaginary way out, certainly marks a way into the landscape; and therefore towards reconciliation rather than only despair. Frizzell’s Red Haring I is a gleeful example of pop art at its best. With cartoon eyes twinkling and thick red striations indicating vigorous movement the tiki, with a maniacal smile, practically bursts from the canvas with enthusiasm. Following on from the infamous Tiki works and forming an integral part of the Red Haring series, this painting unites many of the characteristics considered quintessentially Frizzellian. Frizzell has returned to this series periodically since his 1992 Gow 32
Estimate $55,000 - 65,000
Langsford Tiki exhibition. Renowned for the controversy they aroused during their first showing, the works have long provided the artist a foundation from which to tackle a range of artistic influences and stylistic challenges. From Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque to Alexander Archipenko, Frizzell’s Tiki works most commonly reflect the style of the twentieth century’s cubists.
However, in Red Haring I the artist selects a rather different master to mimic, drawing, in both style and title, from the work of pop artist Keith Haring. Haring, active in New York during the 1980s, employed canvas, wood, vinyl and inner city subway tunnels with equal pleasure in his work. He achieved global recognition for his cartoon and animation-style figures characterised by bright colours, bold delineation and vivacious characters. It is easy to see how Haring's aesthetic could appeal to Frizzell who has aligned himself with pop culture for the majority of his career, bringing much-loved personalities from his time in the advertising industry into his paintings and editions with relish. Frizzell has also often utilised cartoons and comic books as a source of inspiration, as seen in both his long-running Phantom series and in the notorious From Mickey to Tiki edition. Like Frizzell, Haring saw no need to differentiate between commercial art and “fine art, enthusiastically extracting inspiration from each.
In typical Frizzell style, this work's apparent simplicity in fact relies upon a carefully constructed composition. The tiki's head, mouth, nose and eyes are painted with the same rounded smoothness, the shapes echoing and bouncing off one another, enhancing the work's lively, playful impression with every curve. Frizzell replicates the bright acid yellow and vermillion used by Haring in some of his most iconic works. Conveying jubilation and energy, such colours are also important tools of the advertising trade through which an everyday commodity can be given renewed appeal and, ideally, fill consumers with the irresistible desire to "buy now". This multifaceted work therefore not only recalls pop and graphic art but also becomes a wry caricature of the way in which the tiki, once principally a sacred symbol for Maori, has in many ways become a symbol of commercial tourism in New Zealand.

KIT WILLIAMS British b. 1946 Madonna of the Snails Oil on canvas board 184.5 x 56.5 Signed & dated 1991
Provenance: Private Collection, Auckland Purchased from Portal Gallery, London Portal Gallery label affixed verso Estimate $30,000 - 40,000 Christopher ‘Kit’ Williams is an English artist, illustrator and author best known for his 1979 book Masquerade, a pictorial storybook which contains clues to the location of a golden 18 carat jewelled hare created by Williams and then buried “somewhere in Britain” Williams published three other books and was commissioned to create three public clocks with elaborate mechanisms and moving parts, such as animals, for visual interest. Williams continues to paint figurative art at his studio in Gloucestershire, England, now primarily working as a figurative painter in which he uses traditional oil painting techniques, fashioning first a wooden panel covered in linen and oil jesso. He then uses many layers of opaque and transparent Dutch oil paint to create highly luminous images. Williams likes to maintain complete control of every aspect of his artwork including making the clothes worn by the models, creating sets and props, and often making mechanisms either within the frame of the painting that reveal moving elements of the artwork and encourage interaction by the viewer.

I pitched a tent down here when I was a student on a surf mission. I’ve revisited many times. There’s a profound sense of isolation here as the bay points directly south. You’re aware that just over the horizon is Antarctica, and the wind that comes from it is untainted. The only man made object in the bay is this small Bach - maybe a conservation hut. I painted the cliffs and waves from this hut perspective - the only wind protection in the stark bay. Four walls carefully elevated from the high tide mark, close to the stream which runs down the valley. Justin Summerton 118 JUSTIN SUMMERTON Purakanui Bay, the Catlins Oil on canvas 71 x 91 Signed

Estimate $2,000 - 3,000
Kashin the elephant was a greatly loved resident of Auckland zoo from 1973 until her death in 2009. She is fondly remembered by many New Zealanders as the ASB elephant and a star of the television programme The Zoo. A female Asian elephant, Kashin was born in NorthEast Thailand in 1968. She was four years old when she arrived in Auckland aboard a jumbo jet from Como Zoo in the United States. With her friend, fellow-elephant Burma (still residing at Auckland Zoo) Kashin raised critical funds for valuable conservation projects and the protection of endangered species. The day of her death, Auckland Zoo closed its doors for day and later a special memorial day was held with over 18,500 visitors paying their respects and celebrating the life of this extraordinary elephant who touched so many lives. 164 SIMON PAYTON Yellow Talk Acrylic on canvas 153 x 122 Signed

The auctioneer acts as the agent of the seller and neither he nor the seller shall be responsible for any defects or faults in any lot or for any errors of description or for genuineness or authenticity of any lot and no compensation shall be paid in respect of same. From the time of lot being sold, such lot will be the responsibility of the buyer. Successful bidders are required to pay for purchases immediately on completion of sale unless otherwise arranged. All intending buyers are required to register for a bidding number prior to auction commencing. Subscribers can use their permanent bidding number. We reserve the right to ask for identification if you are a first time client of International Art Centre. Each lot shall be paid for and removed at the buyers expense by no later than 4pm Friday 23 May 2014 unless otherwise arranged failing which the auctioneer and/or the seller shall have the right to forfeit any deposit paid by the buyer and to resell the lot either by public or private sale and any deficiency on costs of resale shall be borne by the defaulting buyer. No lot may be collected or paid for whilst auction is in progress. SUBJECT BIDS When the auctioneer declares a lot ‘subject’ this means the bid is below the set reserve and is subject to vendor accepting, rejecting or negotiating the bid. International Art Centre will endeavour to make contact with the vendor immediately after sale or the following day. If the bid is accepted, the highest bidder is obligated to make purchase. ESTIMATES Estimates are provided for each entry and act as a guide only. They are prepared well in advance of sale and are subject to revision at any time. Estimates are based on hammer price and do not include our buyers premium.
