JUSTIN SUMMERTON Mt Eden Oil on canvas 91 x 121 Signed & dated 2011 4,000 - 5,000
“This is the latest in a series of works - and the first where I’ve used a north facing perspective, taking in the harbour bridge. It’s also unique in that I’ve included man made elements such as the stone wall and the tourist hand rails.” Justin Summerton
76
GRAHAME SYDNEY Road to Lauder Lithograph, Edition of 50 50 x 60 Signed, inscribed & dated Feb 2007 1,200 - 1,600
“The image is from a study drawn beside the Pig Root Highway, State 85, about 12kms from my Cambrian home in Central Otago; a road sign of uncertain meaning stands out starkly against a cloudless sky, a black diamond silhouette against the falling night. Far away to the south the line of the Old Man Range sinks into the gathering shadow across the landscape.” Grahame Sydney 76

JUSTIN SUMMERTON ‘Reclining Eye’, Karekare Oil on canvas 45 x 45 Signed & dated 2006 2,000 - 2,500
“The ‘Reclining Eye’ was an idea I had for a figurative sculpture when I was in California in 1995. I painted a couple of landscapes with it in and exhibited them in Mendocino and in San Francisco. It’s essentially an Eye and a reclining body morphed into one. I reintroduced the idea into this Karekare beachscape when I was living out there. The rock it stands next to is the Split Pin’ - an integral part of the volcanic landscape - the epicentre of the volcom. Together they make an interesting connection, like a powerful mercurial natural sculpture and a man made idol of peace and enlightenment.” Justin Summerton

FLORA SCALES A Days Work Oil on board 41 x 63 Signed Inscribed on original label affixed verso 4,000 - 6,000
Helen Flora Victoria Scales was born in Lower Hutt on 24 May 1887. She attended the Canterbury College School of Art and exhibited at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1906. In 1908 Scales left for England to attend Calderon’s School of Animal Painting. A work from this period, Cattle Mustering in New Zealand was hung at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition of 1911. Returning to New Zealand Scales joined the Academy Studio Club in 1914. By 1928 the artist was studying in Paris at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and then Munich’s Hans Hofmann School of Art where she was introduced to Hofmann’s principles of modernism. On her return to New Zealand in 1934 she passed on these principals to Toss Woollaston. Apart from Woollaston, W. H. Allen and Frederick Page, few in New Zealand understood that modernism featured in her work.
In late 1935 Scales returned to paint in England and France. She attended lectures at the Académie Ranson and in 1959 the Heatherley School of Fine Art. During World War II she was interned for two years in France. In 1972 Flora Scales resettled in New Zealand, in 1975 a solo exhibition was arranged by Colin McCahon at the Auckland City Art Gallery. Scales died in 1985. Most of her work is in private ownership in New Zealand, her papers and paintings are held at the Alexander Turnbull Library.

50
These three works by Vera Cummings have been held in a private Auckland collection for over sixty years. They are offered in original kauri frames produced exclusively for the artist Charles Frederick Goldie by his framer John Leech. This distinctive moulding is known as the ‘Goldie’ frame. It is unusual to see the work of another artist presented in this manner, but then again, Vera Cummings was Goldie's leading pupil.

Veronica (Vera) Cummings 1891 - 1949 At the age of eleven she (Vera Cummings) was awarded a scholarship to attend Elam School of Fine Arts. She was one of the youngest pupils to attend the school. From here she became a pupil of Goldie, and was considered the only one to produce the same natural colour of Maori skin as Goldie painted. Her studies of Maoris were in great demand for sending overseas and as well as choosing the same subjects as Goldie, for example Sophia Grey (Guide Sophia), she painted many other well known Maori's from the Auckland area. A Collection of Charles McPhee Velvet Paintings Lots 200 - 207 200 CHARLES MCPHEE Tahitian Sunset Oil on velvet 68 x 89 Signed 1,200 - 1,800 Charles McPhee was one of the original velvet painters. He studied with the founder of this genere of painting, American Edgar Leetag (1904-1954). In the early years, velvet painting was cast as a unique new style that enabled the artist to render life forms into touchable lifelike images that conveyed a sense of being there. McPhee enjoyed immense success from the first days of his debute, he was always one year behind with his portrait schedule. His popularity was such that his exhibitions were always sell outs. McPhee died in Auckland in November 2002 at the age of 92. A documentary titled 'Velvet Dreams' was directed by award winning Samoan director Sima Urale in 1998. The narrator meets velvet artists and collectors in Seattle, Arthur Leeteg's widow in Tahiti, art historians in Auckland and, finally the then 88 year-old velvet painter, adventurer and party boy, Charles McPhee.
