GEOFF WILLIAMS Hot Rod, 2004 Acrylic on board 92 x 152 Signed 8,000 - 12,000

Provenance: Private Collection, Dunedin

Whilst Hot Rod at first glance may appear very retro, it is, indeed, a painting of our time. The ‘gas-guzzling’ Dodge, much loved and cherished by its owner, the chip shop (one of the most popular in Dunedin) directly opposite a multinational fast-food chain are anachronisms... DEAN BUCHANAN Taupo Landscape No. 2 Oil on canvas 70 x 103 Signed & dated 1999 3,000 - 4,000

John Buckley 1942 - 2005 Born in Wellington, Buckley painted from earliest childhood. He recalled schooldays spent in various art rooms learning to draw, paint and channel a vivid imagination. In 1960 the young Buckley moved to Auckland, achieving success over the next twenty years in the world of advertising. During a visit to the United Sates in 1980 Buckley was approached by an agent wishing to handle his work internationally. The result of this partnership was representation in private collections through out the UK, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and Australia. John Buckley’s 1983 solo exhibition at International Art Centre, was a sellout. Buckley depicted sometimes haunting subject matter with a skillful intensity. Of his distinctive style he said the application technique is very similar to that of the 18th century Dutch School. Colour particles are suspended in a clear medium and numerous glazes applied. The advantage of this, is that light is able to shine though the final thickness of the glazes and reflect back from the white canvas. Consequently more brilliance is achieved, even in shadowed areas.

64

It is my belief that the role of the painter is that of the initiator of a relationship between the picture and the viewer. When a picture is complete, it is then handed on to the viewer to contribute to the process by bringing to it their own unique view point. Many people have commented that these pictures ‘brood’ . . . however, it is my belief that the darkness declares the glory of the light. John F Buckley, 1993

71

GRANT HANNA Crossroads Acrylic on board 82 x 54 Signed & dated 1997 2,500 - 3,500

Alan Pearson travelled to the Buller region of the West Coast of the South Island in the winter of 1993. At 12 Mile, north of Greymouth, the surf landlocked the artist between the waves and the forest and he focused on the tidal energy, that pounding West Coast surf which is a relentless force of creation. Works are illustrations of the human condition, a wistful yearning, a whispered hope for the survival in the midst of this relentless force, symphonic depictions of energy.

Best known as a portrait painter, in the 1960s she began a series featuring Maori women with Moko. A versatile artist, Ida was also a competent painter of interiors, landscapes, still life and a series of ballet scenes. She was a founding member of the Waikato Society of Arts, becoming President in 1934. She succeeded fellow artist Ivy Copeland (1895 - 1961) as a lecturer at Auckland College of Education and taught art in several Hamilton schools. Represented: Christchurch Art Gallery, Rotorua Museum, Waikato Museum. A collection of her paintings are on permanent exhibition at Puke Ariki, New Plymouth.
