2020 THE YEAR THAT WAS . . . Art has long provided a myriad of benefits; inspiration, investment and enjoyment to name but a few. In 2020, the viewing and acquisition of an admired work of art provided both visual shelter from the storm and a silver lining for art lovers and investors alike. Recognising that within every challenge lies opportunity, the early implementation of our own App and online Bidding Platform was met with confidence and action by buyers and sellers alike. With the achievement of New Zealand's highest sale total of the year, ($3.6 million November) and the highest single price of the year, ($546,000 for a 1920's portrait by Charles F Goldie, August) 2020 proved to one of the most memorable of our 50 years.

8 COLLECTABLE ART 6:30pm Wednesday 24 February
With six live auctions and six online only auctions, record prices were attained in all genres and International Art Centre's strengthening position in the Contemporary New Zealand art market was clearly evident. For the second consecutive year, the highest price for a work by a living artist, (Michael Smither's Still Life with Green Plastic Plate, $216,210 November) was achieved on the floor of our Parnell premises. Headlines were made and excitement engendered by the sale of works by elusive British street artist Banksy. Interest from around the globe saw numerous records achieved for his screen prints as Banksy sales at International Art Centre since June, totalled $1.7 million.

DOUGLAS MACDIARMID (1922 - 2020) Creatures in Space XV Oil on canvas 60 x 92 Signed & dated 1969 $2,000 - 3,000
Creatures in Space XV is one of a major series of paintings inspired by the artist’s observation of surfers and bathers at Piha Beach, where Douglas’ parents, Dr Gordon and Mary MacDiarmid, lived for many years in semi-retirement. In the early 1950s, and with hopes of anchoring their artist son in New Zealand they purchased a cottage overlooking the wildly beautiful beach. It didn’t work, but many memorable landscape and figurative paintings of Piha and its rugged coastline did resulted from sketches made during his visits home. Although Douglas was never a surfer, he was an enthusiastic swimmer, water skier and sunbather who found the sea strongly restorative. This series, and a darker companion series of paintings titled Creatures Entangled, were the product of MacDiarmid’s 1960s meditation on the theme of the human predicament, which he also referred to as the human ‘condition’. While the other series
22 COLLECTABLE ART 6:30pm Wednesday 24 February
examined individuals interacting in tight spaces, Creatures in Space portrayed quite the opposite people embracing the natural elements at the beach, a location he returned to often in his work. The last eight paintings of the series were dedicated to surfers riding the waves – man challenged, yet in harmony with the powerful forces of nature, the visual rhythm and freedom of sun, water and air. In his battered old painting journal, the painter cryptically records this work as rider seated front on – in eye. Creatures in Space XV came to New Zealand in 1970, one of nine in the series. It was featured in Douglas MacDiarmid’s 1971 solo exhibition held at John Leech Gallery, Auckland. Anna Cahill Biographer - Colours of a Life: The Life and Times of Douglas MacDiarmid (2018)

Through the seemingly morbid fascination with life and death, predominant in his work, Hirst challenges contemporary belief systems and tensions that may arise when death is discussed and portrayed through art. The skulls reference mortality, which is juxtaposed against the spiritual symbolism of the butterfly that is depicted in Hirst’s works as embodiments of the beauty of life and their impermanent existence. The symbolism of the skull, however, is one that is also presented as a celebration of life; a nod to Mexican and European traditions and is often produced in a variety of bright tones and iridescent foiling

CHARLES MCPHEE (1910 - 2002) Tahitian Innocence Oil on velvet 89 x 68 Signed, inscribed & dated 1983 $3,000 - 5,000
107
Charles McPhee was one of the first artists to paint on black velvet. He studied with the founder of this genre, American artist Edgar Leeteg (1904 -1954). In the early years after WWII, painting on velvet was a unique new technique which enabled the artist to render life forms in a tactile and lifelike way. In the 1960s Charlie McPhee enjoyed immense success and personal popularity. He was inundated with commissions and his exhibitions were sell outs. Whilst studying with Leetag, Charles McPhee met Tahitian beauty and artist’s model, Elizabeth Tetuanui. Elizabeth became his wife and longtime muse. On returning to New Zealand they established their home and studio in the Waitakeres. A 1998 television documentary,Velvet Dreams, by award-winning Samoan director, Sima Urale featured the artist and his works. Charlie died at the age of 92.
