Icons Of Auckland
Graham Kirk | Brian Dahlberg | Timon Maxey James Watkins | Lawrence Leitch | Simon Williams | Kasey SealyIcons of Auckland is a group exhibition inspired by our beautiful City of Sails. New Zealand’s most populous city and its largest port, Auckland occupies a narrow isthmus between the Waitemata Harbour of the Hauraki Gulf and the Manukau Harbour. It’s 48 volcanic cones create a unique landscape while providing spectacular views and vantage points for our artists. From the shores of Waiheke Island to the heights of the Sky Tower, Auckland’s iconic landmarks and hidden geographical gems are captured on canvas through a prism of styles, palettes and artistic perceptions.

A mastery of cubism, colour and composition is no easy thing, but is certainly apparent in this latest work. Whilst retaining familiar motifs such as silhouetted trees and fence posts, to the right of the painting, in a section of blue-on-blue, we see the emergence of exciting new subject matter in the form of yachts at rest. A painting of land, sea and sky.
Matiatia, Waiheke| Oil on canvas board |18 x 61 cm | $2,250
How refreshing to see traditional oil painting at its best. Leading Australian artist Kasey Sealy visited Waiheke Island with friend and fellow artist Simon Williams. Having worked together in Italy the revelation of Waiheke‘s elevated sea views and welcoming beauty provided the inspiration for this stunning work.
Colourful spinnakers abound at the startline of the Rum Race organised by the Royal Zealand Yacht Squadron.
White-capped Waitemata waves, wind in the sails against a backdrop of the Harbour Bridge and Chelsea Sugar Refinery capture a perfect Auckland moment.
