International Art Centre’s timed online-only art auctions
During April’s nationwide lockdown we stayed connected to our clients, keeping them close to our art. We partnered with the world’s most secure, reliable and trusted online bidding platform Invaluable.com successfully auctioning works of art with no exhibition viewing, no printed catalogue, while using state-of-the-art twentyfirst-century technology. All transactions were contactless and we reduced our carbon footprint along the way. While the personal service, excitement and atmosphere of our famous live Parnell Road auctions remain and will continue to grow, the success of this online only platform has encouraged us to introduce this as an exclusive and permanent sale category. Discuss how we can offer and promote your artworks online

IMPORTANT & RARE ART
Len Castle realised $18,018 (Record)
Held 19 May 2020 (Postponed from 1 April) Our first post lock-down live auction confirmed nationwide interest in the New Zealand art market. Determined bidding reassuringly achieved solid results. Several record prices included $15,000 for Len Castle’s Crater Lake Bowl from the Ron Sang Collection and $54,054 for a Felix Kelly. Philip Clairmont’s Still Life sold for $180,180, the second highest price at auction for a work by this artist while Grahame Sydney’s Rock of Ages realised $168,000. An exceptional pair of Charles Blomfield paintings of
the Pink & White Terraces sold for $134,534 against an estimate of $40,000 - 60,000. A memorable evening indeed. Coupled with the introduction of our ART at HOME online only auctions transactions of close to $2 million were made during the Covid-19 pandemic. PHILIP CLAIRMONT (1949 - 84) Portrait of Viki Woodcut edition of 5, 67 x 25.5 Signed, inscribed Portrait of Viki & dated 1967 $4,000 - 6,000
Philip Clairmont is commonly associated with vibrantly coloured, textural canvases, but his stark and challenging prints also represent an essential part of his oeuvre. His works are an uncompromising and intricate portrayal of his emotional and subjective experience, regardless of their medium. Clairmont is New Zealand’s fundamental expressionist and Portrait of Viki is fundamental Clairmont. The portrait is a brutally graphic rendering, composed of hasty, jagged edges. It pays careful stylistic homage to some of Clairmont’s early artistic heroes - the German Expressionists Max Beckmann and Ludwig Kirchner. It remains, however, primarily a tribute to his partner Viki and a totem to their shared experience. While Viki wears a disquieting gaze, she still possesses a reticent tenderness and humanity. Any formality imposed by the use of strict geometry is in contention with the abundance of emotion that emanates from the work. These conflicts culminate in a portrait that demonstrates an intense physical presence. Portrait of Viki was completed in 1969. The same year saw Clairmont married to Viki, and the birth of their daughter. This deeply personal work allows the audience an insight into the ardent passion and tumultuous intimacy shared by artist and muse. Amidst drastic personal changes 1969 was also monumental in Clairmont’s professional development. Martin Edmond suggests it is “the year in which Clairmont’s mature work really begins”. Though only 19 when the print was produced, the human sensitivity that would continue to envelope his future works is strikingly present. Portrait of Viki was exhibited in Clairmont’s first solo show which took place in 1970 when he was in his honours year of Art School at Ilam. Notably, two of his tutors purchased work from the show - Bill Sutton and Doris Lusk. From an edition of only five (of which it is doubtful all have survived) this is an early, intimate and exceedingly rare Clairmont work.

THREE WORKS BY BANKSY FROM AN AUCKLAND COLLECTION
31
BANKSY (British b. 1974) Golf Sale 2003 Screenprint edition of 750 32 x 47 Numbered 363/750 in pencil $15,000 - 20,000
PROVENANCE Private Collection, Auckland Purchased from Pictures on Walls, London, 2005 by current owner
Golf Sale was one of the first Banksy prints to be officially released. It was printed by Pictures on Walls of London as an edition of 750, comprising 150 signed and 600 unsigned prints. Golf Sale is almost identical to the Tiananmen Square Tank Man photograph taken by Jeff Widener in 1989. Sometimes called the Unknown Protester, the incident took place in the aftermath of the Chinese military’s violent suppression of the ’89 Democracy Movement. A man stood directly and defiantly in front of Chinese military tanks attempting to block their path through Beijing. It is widely considered one of the most notable acts of non-violent intervention and is an iconic image of the 20th century.
26 COLLECTABLE ART Tuesday 30 June 2020
In his interpretation, Banksy recreates the scene in black and white, as is typical of his style, the protester stands in front of three imposing tanks, and into his hand, Banksy has placed a sign, simply reading GOLF SALE. In Banky’s 2001 publication Banging Your Head Against A Brick Wall, the artist said “We can’t do anything to change the world until capitalism crumbles. In the meantime, we should all go shopping to console ourselves.”

BANKSY (British b. 1974) Soup Can Screenprint edition of 250 50 x 35.2 Numbered 12/250 with publishers Pictures on Walls blindstamp $15,000 - 20,000
PROVENANCE Private Collection, Auckland Purchased from Pictures on Walls, London 2005 by current owner
Banksy’s original four-colour screenprint Soup Cans, is a play on Andy Warhols now infamous Pop Art Campbell’s Soup Cans. Banksy has taken the idea that commercial products can be art, as is the Pop Art ethos, but has rendered it in his tongue-in-cheek style with Tesco Value cans of cream of tomato soup.
30 COLLECTABLE ART Tuesday 30 June 2020
This limited edition screenprint is one of Banksy’s most iconic. Four different variations were released. The number of cans featured on the print and their colours vary.

WALTER EINBECK (German 1890 - 1968)) A Bavarian Picnic Oil on canvas 87.5 x 111.5 Signed $2,500 - 3,500
137
Walter Einbeck was a German oil painter renowned for his figure paintings. These were often of mythological and theosophical subjects such as Allegorie der Schonheit and Traumreise. Einbeck studied painting at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Arts and Crafts) School in Magdeburg; the Munich Art Academy from 1908 to 1910; and the Weimar Art School under Max Thedy and Ludwig von Hoffmann.
80 COLLECTABLE ART Tuesday 30 June 2020
His style is closely associated to the German Sezessionen movement, a group of artists that rebelled against the Salon system in the late nineteenth century and explored the ideas of various modern movements such as the Impressionists. In 1919 Einbeck resettled in Munich where he studied with Franz von Stuck. As his career progressed, he set up his own studio in 1921.
