Born in Auckland 1906, Ernest Mervyn Taylor’s illustrations of New Zealand bird life and tales of Maori mythology were reproduced from 1940 until 1964 in the widely distributed School Journal. Until 1939 the School Journal was the Department of Education’s sole publication for children. In the mid 1940s with Taylor as Art Editor, the emphasis shifted from European to New Zealand content. Fellow artist and contributor John Drawbridge credits Mervyn Taylor with establishing the tradition of high standards in illustration, typography and book design, long associated with this publication. Drawing upon his training as a jewellery engraver, Taylor became known for his elegantly meticulous wood engravings. In 1948 he worked with Russell Clark to produce more than 150 drawings for the book Life in the Pa. The story of a young Maori boy taken from his Northland home by a war party and raised by another tribe. Taylor contributed artworks of birds, Maori implements and weapons, the studies for which he had completed in Wellington’s Dominion Museum, now Te Papa Tongarewa.
10
Taylor’s talents were recognised in 1952 when he was awarded a two-year scholarship to study Polynesian art. Taylor passed away in 1964 acknowledged by friends as a quiet, unassuming gentleman totally committed to his art. These works are from the Artist’s Estate.

JOHN WEEKS Market Square, Moulay Idriss, Morocco Charcoal on paper 24 x 33 Signed & inscribed 800 - 1,200
From Morocco, returned to Algiers and Tunisia, crossed from Tunis to Sicily, thence to Naples, Rome, Assisi. Enjoyed the frescoes of Giotto and Cimabue in the famous church there. Stopped and worked in all these towns and on to Florence (great galleries there). Moved on to Venice, saw the celebrated Biennial Exhibition of the world’s art there, in many ways the most interesting exhibition held on the Continent. Also much of the finest work of Titian, Tintoretto, and other painters in the churches, palaces and galleries of that city. Learnt quite a lot by drawing comparisons. Spent best part of twelve months in Italy. Quote from John Weeks, The Arts Yearbook, 1949 45

PHIL PRICE The Wiggly Wagon Steel and wood Sculpture 120 x 20 Signed, inscribed & dated 2010 4,000 - 6,000
“Wiggly wagon is my largest pre kinetic piece of sculpture. It is probably the most important early work in my career as it bridges the gap between static and kinetic sculpture. The idea of the mobile monument, with strong reference to Brancusi and Smith. It carries a humour-the ridiculous impractical wagon metaphor, also a spiritual reference reaching into the unknown. The site for the original was the site for ‘scream therapy’.” Born in Nelson, New Zealand, in 1965, Phil Price was educated at Christchurch then specialised in sculpture at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts, graduating in 1990. He worked initially as an artists technical assistant, and then in a variety of positions in the art world, in education and in composite engineering. Since 2005 Price has focused on his sculpture practice, working principally on large scale works for the outdoor environment. Phil Price’s name is synonymous with large scale, wind-activated kinetic sculpture. Price is represented in public and private collections throughout Australasia. 51

Born in Balclutha 1922 Douglas Badcock had a highly successful professional art career. Preferring to paint en plein-air, mostly in oil, Douglas earned a reputation as one of New Zealand’s leading landscape painters. His paintings are included in the Queen of England’s collection and King of Thailand’s collection. Douglas was a Kelliher art award winner and several books have been published on his work. He came second in the 1959 Kelliher Art Award and third in the 1962 award. Badcock held his first exhibition in Wellington in 1960, selling out within two days. A review at the time described him as ‘a realistic painter and absolutely sincere with a natural talent and a high technical standard ... A master of the New Zealand landscape, he paints New Zealand as he sees it’. He produced at least three publications: My Kind Of Country then later My Kind of Painting and A Painter in Fiji. In a Listener article in 2004, Mr Badcock said: ‘I paint seas, skies, mountains. I paint the world I know, as it appears to me. I have an image that is there and I have to record it. When I’m painting I let the subject reveal itself. Picasso said `I don’t seek, I find’. And finding is a revelation – intellectually, emotionally, spiritually. The primary motivation is self-expression, but if there’s no vision, if we don’t see beauty in nature any more, then we’re nowhere.’ 117

170 CHARLES MCPHEE Mareva Oil on velvet 88 x 67 Signed 1,000 - 1,400
Charles McPhee 1910 - 2002 was one of the original velvet painters. He studied with the founder of this genre of painting, American Edgar Leeteg 1904-1954. The early years of velvet painting, after WWII was cast as a unique new style of painting that had a secret that enabled the artist to render life forms into a touchable, lifelike look that conveyed a sense of being there. McPhee enjoyed immense success from the first days of his debut, he was always one year behind with his portrait schedule. His popularity was such that his exhibitions were always sell outs. McPhee died in Auckland in November 2002 at the age of 92.

The narrator meets velvet artists and collectors in Seattle, Arthur Leeteg’s widow in Tahiti, art historians in Auckland and, finally the then 88 year-old velvet painter, adventurer and party boy, Charles McPhee.
