Summer Salon 23 February 2017
Our first exhibition of 2017 is a stella event in every sense of the word. Leading professional artists from Australasia and Europe embrace this opportunity to showcase their very best works. An exhibition of over 85 paintings with a benchmark of talent, diversity and quality. Highlights abound, including two large-scale, contemporary equine oils from the Madrid studio of young Spanish art-star Alberto Serrano. Serrano recently enjoyed a near sellout success with the unveiling of his work at the Padua Art Fair. We are also delighted to welcome the immensely talented, New Plymouth based Jasmine Middlebrook to our stable of artists.

Paolo Canetti Ritorno dei campi Oil on canvas 30 x 40 cm $1,750 Paolo Canetti sends a selection of new paintings direct from his Milan studio. A senior Italian artist whose first exhibition was held in 1967 at Milan’s Isola Gallery, Canetti possesses a uniquely recognisable style. Since the mid 1980’s his paintings have been of fishermen, flower gatherers, shop keepers and people of the land set in Tuscan and Southern Italian landscapes. While his subject matter is of the ordinary, Canetti’s compositions are distinctively different.
8
Paolo Canetti Raccolta della olive Oil on board 50 x 70 cm $3,950 Figurative and still life paintings sometimes draw upon elements of cubism. These two paintings are excellent examples of Canetti’s work. One is set in Sicily, land of the Prickly Pear, seen to the right of the man on the donkey. The other in Tuscany, shows olives being harvested in an age old fashion. Brushstrokes of burnt sienna and yellow ochre bring about contrast and a connection to the land, just as the artist intended.

Alberto Serrano Venetian Stallion Oil on linen 163 x 129 cm
Alberto Serrano - Madrid
Alberto Serrano Spanish Stallion Oil on linen 150 x 200 cm Alberto Serrano is a young Spanish artist creating a great deal of interest with exhibitions in Madrid, Venice and Florence. Recently he enjoyed a near sell-out at the Padua Art Fair. One of his works hangs in the collection of Baroness von Thyseen. A graduate of Madrid’s School of Fine Arts, Serrano displays an artistic maturity beyond his 28 years. Serrano’s contemporary rendition of these large scale equine oils is accentuated by a very personal hands-on message from the artist whose palm prints are discernible as part of the artwork. Majestic in scale, the stallions each emerge from a dark canvas, brought to life through brushstrokes of verdigris and bronze. Both works are presented in imported Italian Bellini frames. 15
Kasey Sealy Lucignano Wisteria - Tuscany Oil on canvas board 25 x 30 cm $1,950
Kasey Sealy - Australia/Italy 16
Kasey Sealy Cypress Hill - Tuscany Oil on canvas board 23 x 50 cm $2,250 Kasey Sealy’s ongoing love affair with the tiny Tuscan hilltop village of Lucignano is reflected in his work. Lucignano is a remarkably well conserved medieval village about 70 kilometres southeast of Florence on the road between Siena and Arezzo. From 1200 to 1500 Lucignano’s strategic position made her a sought-after acquisition with Sienna and Florence battling for possession. Today Lucignano moves to a slower rhythm, a rhythm which captivated leading Australian impressionist Kasey Sealy from his first visit in 2009. Based in NSW, Sealy regularly returns to Lucignano to paint and teach. When interviewed about his Italian paintings, Sealy talked about falling under the spell of a different light. A spell is caste and the viewer transported by this latest collection of memorable works. Traditional oil painting at its best.

Henryk Szydlowski Hot Day in the Bird’s City Oil on canvas 17 x 24 cm $4,950 Henryk Szydlowski says he puts as much creative energy into his smaller paintings as his large canvases. Energy flowing through the artist’s mind, heart, hand and brush is joyously celebrated in these new works. Szydlowski is indeed a star who paints poetry on canvas. One of Australasia’s most successful living artists, Szydlowski has enjoyed global acclaim for many decades. A 1976 graduate of Krakow’s Academy of Fine Art, Szydlowski emigrated to New Zealand and by 1985 was lecturing at Auckland’s Whitecliffe School of Fine Art. Since 1989 he has been based in Perth, Australia.

Henryk Szydlowski Bird Stalkers Oil on canvas 24 x 17 cm $4,950
The tree-like symbol which often appears in Szydlowski’s work is a reference to the New Zealand native ponga tree. More than that, it is a visual acknowledgment of a key-time of foundational creativity during the years Szydlowski lived in New Zealand.

Carlo Mirabasso Tempo della amore Oil on panel 60 x 40 cm $4,500
Carlo Mirabsso was born and studied in Rome. Today he lives close to Assisi in Umbria, the perfect geographical and inspirational base for an artist creating contemporary metaphysical paintings and ceramics. Mirabasso’s pictorial technique comes to life on gessoed, finely painted wood panels. His narratives reference Renaissance and neo-classical figures, symbols and architecture. The works are intriguing and refreshing with touches of frivolity and messages of abundance, love and joy.

Franco Anselmi - Veneto Italia Based in Treviso, Northern Italy Franco Anselmi is a graduate of Urbino University. Exhibiting throughout Europe and the United States since 1975, Anselmi has visited New Zealand for solo exhibitions held by International Art Centre in Auckland and Christchurch. The artist’s imagination is boundless and his vibrant, modern day frescoes are a contemporary take on the Venetian School of painting with its associated love of colour. In the world of Anselmi the nocturnal owl, wisest of birds, is the only creature portrayed with two eyes, indicative of a balanced view of the world.
