When it comes to drifting in Orlando, there aren’t too many local tracks to choose from. Orlando Kart Center might be a solution. Fellow drifter, Alan Godoy, recently organized Orlando Karting Center’s very first drift event. As you could imagine, Orlando Kart Center (OKC) is known for kart rentals and events. However, Alan had a vision for OKC’s kart track and was able to collaborate with the OKC team in order to make his vision come to life. Alan handpicked a total of fifteen drivers to attend this unique event as a way to prove that drifting is not what you see in the movies. Orlando Drift was able to speak with the owner

in person and at first, when Alan approached him with this idea, he was hesitant because he immediately thought that this motor sport would bring in the wrong crowd. But after witnessing the respectful, family-oriented atmosphere that Alan created, he was convinced otherwise. This could be a big step forward for the drift scene here in Orlando, which could open up opportunities for different types of drift events in the future.

Because it was OKC’s first event and they announced it two weeks prior, no one really knew what to expect. When we walked through the gates though, there was already a number of people who were ready to see a show. For spectators, there were many places where people could get a good view of the track. Flights of stairs surrounding the track allowed spectators to climb up and view the track from a higher viewpoint. If you want to relax while you watch, the track offers an additional seating area inside the main building, which includes vending machines with snacks, a bar where you can get a cold beer and most importantly, cold AC. Overall the track is very accommodating. As drifter Alex Barrios (@xandejiu) puts it, “it’s driver and spectator friendly which is true for both their kart rentals, and the event we attended. You feel like you’re at an actual track. But it’s not for beginners.”

As far as pit space, seeing drift cars lined up where karts are usually pitted looked like a scene straight out of Japan. The pits were organized so that each car was parked directly in front of a garage, with awnings that provided shade for drivers and their tools. While the pits next to the track were quite tight, which is understandable given that this track was built for karts, the facility offered quite a lot of space right outside the track for trucks and trailers.

@bhool

Needless to say, drivers loved this track. Being that it is a road course, many drivers found it to be quite technical and really fun at the same time. Most drivers reported this track as being a second gear layout. The wideness of the track was described as being perfect by Alex Barrios and Joel Calvo, with a probable maximum tandem capability of three cars. As we heard

igan33

from many of the drivers, in order to keep the facility clean and to prevent damage, experience is definitely a must to drive a track of this level. Of course with any motorsport we all know accidents happen. Allowing experienced drivers the chance to drive this track will help grow the sport and motivate less experienced drivers to improve their skills.

I mean, who wouldn’t want to drive this track? orlandodrift.fun

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

kartndrift Now for the big question: How was tire wear? Well first of all, many drivers thought the track was pretty grippy, with a decent amount of tire wear. From what we gathered, drivers experienced different levels of tire wear, which is understandable since cars at the track ranged from grassroots to competitive level builds.

“The track is fabulous, it’s very technical, tight, and low speed. There are so many transitions, and repetition - which is great for practice” Joel Calvo (@naka_drifter)

In all, the track was amazing. It was a really fun event, with amazing and positive vibes. It was exciting to see the drifting and karting world coming together. Drivers gave ride alongs to a number of spectators, including

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

some of the kids that race karts at the facility on a regular basis. All we got to say is, if you ever have the chance of even just coming to spectate, Orlando Karting Center is a great place to go to.

What is your earliest memory of drifting? Watching some friends of mine drift at Lanier Speedway when I was oval racing. I remember really enjoying it. Who would you like to work/collaborate with? If I had my choice of anyone – Ray Evernham, Jeff Gordon’s former crew chief and a former Nascar team owner What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene? Stadium style drifting. We’re missing the boat big time on it. If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? Well my wife spots for me in FD so she’s as involved as I am. I guess we’d both be the Cadillac. What do you think you’d be doing today if you never started drifting? I would still be in Motorsports. Growing up in asphalt oval racing, I'd probably be running super late models or something like that. I did have a brief time where I was pursuing a career in aviation as well, so, possibly that.

0 2 0 2 29th,

U.S. Drift Circuit hosted the

Social Drift-Ancing event at Sebring International Raceway Our team decided to take a trip to Sebring to have our first go at a U.S. Drift Circuit event and we have to say, it was a great experience! It is always nerve-wracking to drive a new track, especially one like Sebring, which is considered to be the birthplace of American Endurance Racing, but overall, it was awesome and one of our team drivers Rebeka Rocco killed it! For this event, Turn 17 was utilized for a layout, with an additional track set up as a skid-pad by Turn 15. This really gave drivers the opportunity to get as much seat time as possible and since the tracks were hot from 10am to 10pm, it gave the drivers some variety instead of driving the same layout for 12 hours.

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

social drift-ancing Who is the U.S. Drift Circuit? U.S. Drift Circuit (USDC) is a “sanctioning body created to promote drivers, professional drift competitions and drift demonstrations throughout the United States and around the world.” Coming from the stance of safety, good sportsmanship and integrity, they seek to continuously grow and evolve the wonderful sport that we call drifting. The two tracks varied in difficulty –The skid pad, which consisted of a number of wide and tight turns placed in an ‘S’ pattern, was a less technical layout geared towards beginner drivers. When driving a low horsepower car, the skid pad did not do too bad when it came to tire wear. A pair of tires lasted for about half a day with consistent runs on the skid pad. When taking into consideration how hot it was that day, that’s not that bad!

al d n a r r a c @

e

Doing runs on the skid pad really helped drivers prepare for Turn 17. This was a more technical, fast paced track, with a much longer entry that allowed drivers to initiate at a much higher speed than the skid pad. From a driver’s perspective, the last turn was quite challenging, being that we had to transition from two fairly wide turns into a ‘U’ turn towards the wall. Tire wear on Turn 17 was a bit different than the skid pad, as drivers reported it as being “slightly worse” than the other track. At the end of the day, both tracks were technical and challenging in their own ways, but also really fun!

orlandodrift.fun

The event itself, along with the atmosphere was great. Each team had a good amount of pit space and everyone (as always) was super helpful and always willing to lend a hand. The crew running grid was exceptional as well, especially when asking for pointers on driver

What is your earliest memory of drifting? My earliest memory of drifting was 2005 D1 GP USA vs. Japan.

T E R E N N A E J _ S I @CHR ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

We competed in a car I built, and it was amazing. It was a car that I built but never drove, only for noncompetition driving. The Silkroad s13.5 built by Intec Racing Who would you like to work/collaborate with? I would love to collaborate with Mad Mike on a fun roadster/drift car/show off video talking about high horsepower, short wheelbase cars that are made for racing. What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene?

I would love to see more motorsport disciplined drivers from other arenas like trophy truck and rallycross get into drifting. What do you think you would be doing today if you never started drifting? Drag Racing, where I got my start in motorsports If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? Well if there was a lady in my life, she would be a mix of cars most likely. I’m not sure, but Italian/Japanese sounds hot so Ryan Tuerck’s Ferrari FRS lol!!

driversQ&A Center in South Florida to try and go do donuts. We had no idea what drifting really was and had no idea you needed a rear wheel drive car (which I had, but he didn’t) so was definitely a very interesting and frustrating experience, but it was well worth it haha

R E T F I R D _ D E V I @DEPR

Lukas Torno What is your earliest memory of drifting? It would probably be me in my first car (S2000) with my friend in a WRX going to the BB&T

Who would you like to work/collaborate with? Man, that’s a hard one. There are sooo many people/companies I would love to work with but if I had to pick, it would probably be my man Micah Diaz! I’ve looked up to him since before I knew how to do a burnout and I’ve seen him work his way up through all obstacles. He’s super humble and ever since I met him, he’s helped me tremendously – not only with driving, but behind the scenes stuff also. Mindset, self-evaluation, and discipline are huge things for me and it’s nice to build a relationship with other likeminded people and push each other to the next level and to greater things What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene? I really enjoy the US scene for the most part. Everyone is usually very friendly and humble and there’s not much hate. Online is a different story but I’m talking about at the tracks. I would love to see more tracks with frequent

events or that are just open more often, like Japan for example. I know there’s a lot more to that for it to be possible, but to be able to go drive or shakedown your car or just get some seat time in whenever would be a great tool in bettering your driving and progression. Also, more high-speed road courses would be cool too lol. What do you think you would be doing today if you never started drifting? Honestly, I have no idea haha. Before cars, I was tattooing, making canvases, skating competitively so who knows. Drifting is what got me into cars and the reason why I wanted to expand my knowledge on them and became a BMW tech to help learn and become more independent but all those things were for old me and I would pursue something different for sure. I also had a really hard time managing working as a tech and pursuing drifting so now I’m all in and failure is not an option. If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? Well I don’t think my current girlfriend is going to like this answer, but I’d say she’d probably be an M2 BMW (Which is my dream pro car) or a 135i with an S85 V10 swap – nothing more rad than that in my opinion!

orlandodrift.fun

Kazuya Taguchi What is your earliest memory of drifting? I clearly remember when I first did drifting. I practiced in heavy snow until I ran out of gasoline. That was when I was 15 years old. Who would you like to work/collaborate with? I want to collaborate with actors and dancers. And I want to broaden the recognition of drift. I don’t think there is any other competition to excite like this. What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene? Expansion of general recognition of drift competitions such as movies and stunts. What do you think you would be doing today if you never started drifting? That’s a very difficult question for me. I can’t think of a life without drifting…I really love DRIFTING. If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? Tesla – Because drifting is dangerous.

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

driversQ&A

Shinji Minowa What is your earliest memory of drifting? I went to touge when I was young and didn't know what drifting was. I saw some cars go sideways. That was my first time I saw drifting and had a huge impact on me! Who would you like to work/collaborate with? Ken Gushi and James Deane !! What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene? Me drifting in US lol What do you think you would be doing today if you never started drifting? Jobless – just old man If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? Ahh my wife is 2j big turbo, just like her car.

OSW Drift organizes a number of events throughout the year at Orlando Speed World, which is also home to Formula Drift Orlando. Events like their Learner Days are for new drivers looking to learn basic car control. The great thing about these events is that the track invites OSW veterans to come out and help instruct new drivers to ensure you have a great learning experience. There is a morning portion where drivers can learn in a spectator free, no stress environment. There is also a night portion, where anyone with

a tech ready drift car can come out and participate in front of a crowd. Other than the open track days that OSW Drift offers, there are also a couple of special events each year: Spring Break Bash & Black Friday. Drivers from all across the country come to OSW to participate in a weekend filled with camping, grilling out, partying and of course heavenly drifting, full of beautiful VQ noises. The number of events that OSW Drift offers, along with affordable pricing (spectating and

s

driving) makes this track one of the most appealing in Central Florida. Other than fair entry prices, the track offers drivers the opportunity to either drive on the skid pad or drive the oval track. Since Formula Drift uses the oval track to host their Pro 1 and Pro 2 competitions, it’s cool to be able to drive the same track as the pros. Public events allow spectators to gain insight on what drifting is all about - the work that gets put in and bonds that are built within the community‌and cool cars of course.

orlandodrift.fun

OSW Drift events are always great and the community is made up of passionate, skilled and supportive drivers. The community here has been steadily growing for quite some time, which has brought new faces and talented drivers into the sport. OSW is home to many professional and experienced drivers, such as Kelsey Rowlings, Brandon McDowell, Pat Goodin, Adam LZ and many other pro drivers who utilize OSW for testing and tuning.

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

What is the track like from a driver’s perspective? Well, first of all, the track’s main priority is that of safety. This being said, make sure your car is ready to pass tech! Although it may be a little overwhelming as a new driver, the requirements to pass tech are not hard to meet. A few of the basic and most important requirements are: upto-date SA helmet, strapped down battery, all lug nuts and a fire extinguisher.

OSWDrift

in @zack_calv

OSW Drift uses three different classes to categorize drivers based on their skill level – C which is novice, B which is intermediate, and A which is advanced. What about tire wear? Again, for a low horsepower car, the skid pad does fairly well. If you’re not hot lapping, probably all you need are two sets of new tires, if that. The oval on the other hand is a little harsher and requires a few more sets of tires.

Pretty much what we’re trying to say is, this track is amazing and offers a great environment for all drivers, regardless of skill level. The community is great, with experienced drivers always ready to give advice on both driving and set up. When you come to OSW, you can always expect a good time – just ask Marco Garza (Mr. Seckshual) and Mike Jones (Not that Mike Jones) while they’re cheering drivers on to do burnouts in the oval!

orlandodrift.fun

Ryan Acevedo

What is your earliest memory of drifting? My earliest memory of drifting was at my very first drift event at the 2019 Orlando Speed World Spring Break Bash Event! After trading the s14 my father and I had built plus some cash on top for a decently setup 350z, we ordered some tires and safety gear and went out to spring break bash for my first ever drift event and ‘til this day I mark it as one of the most memorable moments of my life. Finally drifting in real life, on a real track, safe off public roads felt amazing. Who would you like to work/collaborate with? If I could work with any company in a mutually beneficial collaboration, it would be hands down be Enjuku Racing. Enjuku Racing since the beginning popularity of drifting in America have been one of the key components and pioneers in drifting in the United States and the state of Florida. Growing up and being from Florida, seeing the Enjuku racing team at events like Formula Drift always made it a dream of mine to maybe one day become that kid from Florida representing Enjuku Racing. As I’ve

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

driversQ&A

gotten older and progressed in drifting, I have been fortunate enough to build a friendship with the staff and crew at Enjuku Racing and it’s been an extremely humbling experience being able to be friends and create memories with those guys. What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene? One thing I would like to see more in the United States drift scene is less over built cars. A lot of American drivers spend tons and tons of time building very stylish, impressive, drift cars, but then neglect their seat time. I think it’s important to either build a well balanced car that allows you to achieve both, and maybe build a second car so that you have a seat time car to get seat time and really push your driving. I think if less people were worried about how cool their car looked, or how much power they can possibly make, or throwing an absurd amount of money in the most expensive parts, the actual recreational and lower-level competitive drift scene in America

would be a lot more competitive and skill fulfilled. On top of that, the drivers themselves would be better skill oriented drivers. What do you think you would be doing today if you never started drifting? I couldn't imagine life today without drifting. I’m not quite sure where I would be right now, and I'm not quite ever worried about that. I think it's important to take life as it's given to you and live in the moment. You never know the cards you are going to be dealt, the challenges you will face, and the opportunities you will be given. Drifting is in my life, and has become a major piece of it, and that's how it was meant to be. If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? I am currently single; however, the girl of my dreams would probably be some sort of Ferrari. European, expensive, something everyone can appreciate, and overall, just unique.

A lot of you probably know me as Frosty, or Frosty Photos. I'm here to give you guys a peek into the life of drifting from a media standpoint. I've had a lot of questions about how drift events are perceived from a photographer's view recently, so here I am to answer a few of them. So just to get started, I figured I'd let you know a little about me. I'm 23 years old and have been doing photography work for about 3 years in total, but only one year or so semiprofessionally. I got into doing media coverage for drifting events only a year ago, when last June, Chris Jackson from U.S. Drift Circuit invited me to one of the events he was hosting. As for photography style, I mainly do stills, but just recently, I’ve started picking up video as well. The question I'm asked the most is why I continue to do drift media. Well, even though it's not a big money maker, it's still pretty

ORLANDO DRIFT MAG

rewarding when seeing how happy you can make the drivers with just some good photos of them driving. Also, you never have the same shots each time, as you would in other types of media settings. In drifting, there are different drivers with a number of styles, varieties of cars, and multiple locations to shoot from. There are many variables when shooting drift events, making it that much more interesting. Some days, you’ll be shooting in the heat, rain, or even during an overcast day, forcing your styles to change accordingly. Another question I'm asked often is what the community attitude is towards media, and how we are treated. Honestly, a lot of media guys are treated pretty well and even get a lot

FROSTYPHOTOS

of love from the drift community. Without us, they wouldn't really have media and clean shots that savor the moment of their best runs, even if it’s memorable accidents they have on track. Media is a huge factor in the drift community, and any community really, because you're there to help people create memories and fulfill a needed service. But our day doesn’t end at the track. After each event, we need to go through all of our content and edit pictures, which can sometimes be lengthy. Overall, the drift community is like a family, everyone helps each other out when they can, and some even go out of their way to help you out. In general, doing media coverage for the drift community has been pretty fun and rewarding.

Just remember that media is a service tipping/paying for that service goes a long way. Not only does it make us feel appreciated, but it also gives us the incentive to continue coming out to each and every event that we can. Throwing us a few bucks whenever we provide you with some rad shots incentivizes us to push even harder when shooting for you guys, the drivers. Would I recommend doing media at a drift event? Very much so. It’s a hell of a time and you’ll learn a lot. Those of you debating whether or not to try your chances at doing media for these events, give it a go. A lot of us media guys will help you where we can and give you some pointers!

My earliest drifting memory, outside of Option videos, Slide America, and the random internet findings before I could drive would have to be after just getting my first car close to 15 years ago. A 1996 Nissan 240sx s14 handed down to me from my father. drivers and I'd enjoy working on any project with him. Not because of rotary’s, but the no lift, no care, 100% attack attitude appealed to me. What is the one thing you want to see more of in the US scene? I think having more high payout competition series not hinging on FD licensing or Spec car builds is an attraction to me as a driver. As well, I think the festival style events made popular by Gridlife would be awesome to see more of. The adaptation of all the motorsport styles and mixing in the concerts brought brand new fans to the truth of drifting.

in mostly one-wheel peel doughnuts behind a warehouse but started an addiction I did not realize would take hold of the rest of my life. The kid ended up being Wesley Tin, and though I have not seen him with 3 attractive Asian girls again since, we became and remain remarkably close friends since that day.

What do you think you would be doing today if you never started drifting? Before cars took over my life, I was an avid fisherman and preferred being on the water. I had competed in a few local tournament’s and had a knack ever since I was little. I’d like to think I could have made a go at fishing or something in the realm of marine biology for a living.

Who would you like to work/collaborate with? It’s difficult to say only one person I’d like to collaborate or work with. I have worked with and drove with some of my idols in this sport already, But ever since watching the Red Bull world drift championship in 2008, Mad Mike Whiddet was always one of my favorite

If your girlfriend/wife were a drift car, which car would she be? If my SO were a drift car I’d say she would have to be something imported as it would be more than likely rare, over 25 years old, I wouldn’t be able to understand the manual, parts would be hard to come by and it would be a fiscally irresponsible decision.
