You may recognize Jon Mesa from his T.V. debut on Oxygen’s “BEST INK” season one. Or maybe you recognize his award winning work which landed him on the July cover of “Freshly Inked Magazine“. No matter how you have heard of Jon Mesa, the same constant applies…this guy is taking the tattoo industry by storm. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jon and getting to know him more in depth. How long have you been tattooing? What got you started tattooing? I’ve been tattooing for five and half years now. I was going to school for graphic design and started getting more tattoos around the same time, I became friends with the guy who was tattooing me and he asked if I was interested in helping out around the shop and I did. I had no intention to be a tattooer at that point. After some time all I could think about was tattooing so I ended up dropping out of school to be a tattoo artist. I’ve never wanted to do something that bad. What was your first tattoo, any meaning behind it? Who was the artist, and how old were you? My very first tattoo I got when I was 18, I got it from a guy name Gary I think in West Palm Beach, FL. I remember telling my girlfriend at the time that I was gonna get a tattoo. I didn’t tell anyone else, and I went by myself and picked the design off the wall and got it done. I hid it from my mom for a couple of days, until she figured it out and totally beat my ass lol….she made me promise I would never get another one and as you can see on me, I totally broke that promise. What do you do on your off time from tattooing? When I’m not tattooing, I’m either sketching or looking at artwork….Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of traveling and going to tattoo conventions. I love visiting new places and partying my ass
off in places I’ve never been to before. Do you have any personal pieces that are in progress or that you have plans on having done, any specific artists? My biggest and favorite tattoo is a huge Japanese ghost that takes up most of my torso by Seth Wood from Saved Tattoo. What has been your biggest achievement as an artist and is there any goal you’re striving towards currently? My biggest achievement as an artist was winning my first two trophies at this years Philadelphia Tattoo convention, I won best medium color and best of show…there were some really good artist there, so it felt good to get my first win ever there. The Philadelphia tattoo convention is dear to me because is also the first show I ever worked. How was your experience with “Best Ink”? Any highlights or anything you would have done differently? My experience with Best Ink was a crazy one, definitely life changing…I learned a lot on the show and really feel that I grew as a tattoo artist and something really just clicked. I made great friends that will last a lifetime. It was definitely worth it. Have you tattooed anyone famous and if so, how was the experience? I’ve never tattooed anyone famous, in the end what’s the most important thing to me is making cool tattoos for my clients. Describe your most memorable client and what made it so memorable. One of my most memorable clients, was also the oldest person I’ve tattooed, she was a really nice woman in her late 80’s and she wanted to get her first tattoo, she got a tiny tattoo on her hand. She
said it was something she always had wanted to do but it wasn’t accepted when she was young, but she said that now her daughters had them and it’s more accepted so why not lol…I wish more people thought about it that way. Do you plan on doing any conventions come the new year? Next year I’ll be at the best of the Midwest show in Iowa, Baltimore, Miami, LA, Hell City in Ohio….and a lot more I can’t remember right now. If you weren’t tattooing, what profession do you think you would be doing? If I wasn’t tattooing I would be doing graphic design and working on a clothing brand….it’s what I wanted to do until tattooing took over my soul. What has been your worst experience with a client? I was tattooing this guy on his arm, and he’s telling me this story about how he used to wrestle in the UFC and mid story he faints I try to catch him and once I do, he pees his pants…..he woke up right away and he had to finish the tattoo in his pee pants. Licensed Tattoo Artist: Job Description and Education Requirements Licensed tattoo artists require no formal education. Learn about the training, job duties as well as licensure and certification requirements to see if this is the right career for you. Essential Information: Tattoo artists typically exhibit a love of tattooing, along with creative talent and a desire to work with people. There is no national protocol that must be followed in order to become a professional tattoo artist. A professional tattoo license or certification ensures that the tattoo artist’s work is compliant with health standards for safe application of a tattoo, and that the artist is a capable technician. Job Description: Using needles and pigments, a tattoo artist applies a permanent design directly to a client’s body, injecting ink under a layer of skin. Clients may come to a tattoo artist with a picture or design in mind or they may consult with the tattoo artist to create the desired image. Tattoo artists use their artistic skills to advise clients on size, color, design and placement of their body art. Some tattoo artists specialize in certain artistic styles, and many are able to offer clients a portfolio of work to examine. Tattoo artists are responsible for maintaining a safe and clean work environment, including donning gloves when contact with broken skin is possible, sterilizing single-use tattoo equipment and tools using an autoclave after each tattoo application and ensuring that all work surfaces are properly disinfected to avoid the spread of blood-borne viruses such as hepatitis, HIV and other communicable infectious diseases. Education Requirements: In general, tattoo artists earn a license based on completion of a training program and passing an exam that measures their ability to understand and follow formally established health and safety protocols, not their creative ability in designing or applying body art. State licensing and certification requirements vary. In some cases, there are no statewide regulations, and requirements are left to county or city government. Typically, tattoo artists are required to be at least 18 years old. Licensed or certified tattoo artists may need to renew their credentials every few years. Licensing or Certification Requirements: Certification or licensing standards may require a tattoo artist to complete training or an apprenticeship in an approved setting and under the supervision and guidance of another established professional in the field. This can take 1-2 years. Some states mandate that apprentices hold a special apprentice license or permit, usually earned by filling out an application and paying a fee. Some applications for licensing or other state credentials may require submission of a photograph, fingerprints and personal history so that a background check can be performed. Proof of training may also be required. While the government does not monitor the creativity of a licensed tattoo artist, certainly the clientele of a tattoo parlor finds this aspect critical. A licensed tattoo artist isn’t required to complete formal artistic training or hold a degree in any specific art or design field; however, mastering the art of drawing and working with inks used for body art is important. Mastery of artistic and technical skills ensures that the recipient of a tattoo leaves with aesthetically-pleasing tattoo that has been professionally administered.

Nikko Hurtado
was born in the San Fernado Valley in 1981. Son of a Mexican welder and a Hispanic homemaker, Nikko grew up in the high desert drawing cartoons and characters for fun. His love for art transformed when at the age of 16 his longtime friend, Mike DeMasi, got a car. He and Mike then had the means and ways to take classes at the Art Center of Pasadena. Nikko took classes for several years but decided to give up on art to do construction. In 2002, after 3 years of hard labor, Nikko stopped into Art Junkies Tattoo Studio in Hesperia to see how Mike was doing. Mike had been tattooing for a while and offered Nikko an apprenticeship. The only experience Nikko had with tattoos was the gang or prison tattoos he had seen on friends and family. He didn’t even have a tattoo himself. Regardless, the next day Nikko picked up a machine and started tattooing soon after. “I had always wanted to do art for a living and was soo happy that it happened so organically,” says Nikko “It was like tattooing chose me.” After just a year of tattooing Nikko did a tattoo that would change his career forever – a Batman color portrait. This was his first color portrait that he ever attempted and when it was complete the client entered
it into the Pomona Tattoo Portrait Contest and took home First Place. It would be one of many awards he would collect over the years, but that portrait put him on the map. The image went viral in the tattoo community before there was even Facebook, Instagram, and social media. He was now known as the go-to artist for color portraits. Nikko started being featured on numerous TV shows such as LA Ink, Tattoo Wars, Tori & Dean, and Spike TV’s Ink Master. His TV appearances drew attention from celebrities and allowed him to tattoo Musicians Drake, The Game, Fred Durst, Wes Borland, Brandon Boyd, Jose Pasillas, Wale, Andrew WK, and Cheryl Cole; Athletes Carlos Boozer and Chris Cole; Actors Guillermo Diaz and Jenna Jameson and celebrities Jeffree Star, Jesse James, and Kat Von D. Right in the middle of his career boom, Nikko started the Black Anchor Collective tattoo studio in 2009. “I noticed that many of my clients were flying in from all over the World to get tattooed,” he says “I want my clients to feel special and to know that I appreciate them. I just wanted to give them more of myself.” And he did give more of himself by implementing the anchor as the centerpiece for the studio and his brand. The anchor is a very personal symbol for Nikko, not only does it pay homage to classic tattooing iconography, but it also represents friendship, family,
and love. It reminds him to stay grounded and focused on what is important. In 2013 Nikko hit an important milestone in his career with his first solo art show “Renati”. Working primarily in oils, Nikko debuted a series of paintings at the Corpro Gallery in Santa Monica, CA to acclaimed reviews. When he looks at everything it took to get to that point he realizes he wouldn’t be where he is now without the dedicated help of his wife Joanne, “Everything I have done was only possible because of her help.” Today Nikko is extremely humbled by the love and support of his fans, friends, and family. He also now has a tattoo collection of his very own and continues to learn by only getting tattooed by people he can learn from. He spends his life dedicated to tattooing at Black Anchor Collective, travelling the World and spending time with his family.

Famous Saint’ name is being brought up in the tattoo industry from Sacramento, California to Atlanta, Georgia. His versatility and range with art makes him one of the most sought after tattoo artists in the south. Working out of one of the largest & most productive shops in the State of Mississippi when he’s not on the road, Saint is trying to develop his brand of art into more than just tattooing. was born in 1976, in Damaia (Portugal). He held a spray can for the first time in the mid 1980s, but it was in the 1990s, when graffiti began its dissemination throughout Portugal and began to leave its Portuguese birthplace, Carcavelos, that the artist had his first contact with graffiti and its movement. His first experiences were sketched on street walls and train tracks and so the passion he had always shown for drawing had a newly found purpose and began evolving. Not long after, came the opportunity to paint large scale murals in Damaia, Carcavelos and in many social housing neighbourhoods, such as Cova da Moura, 6 de Maio and Santa Filomena. Early on, the artist showed a special interest in perspective and shading, in an obscure style, which he later called “sombre 3D”, where the compositions, landscapes or portraits, messages or homages, stood out for their realism and technique. Odeith was, in 2005, internationally recognized for his groundbreaking incursions in the anamorphic artfield, standing out for his compositions created in perspective and painted in different surfaces, such as 90º corners or from the wall to the floor, creating an optical illusion effect. In 2008, he decided to close his tattoo studio (which he opened in 1999) and moved to London. Currently, back in Lisbon, he assumed painting as his main activity, having created large scale murals for major national and international enterprises such as the London Shell, Kingsmill, the Coca-Cola Company, Estradas de Portugal, Samsung, Sport Lisboa e Benfica (football club) and several Portuguese city halls such as Câmara Municipal de Lisboa and Câmara Municipal de Oeiras, amongst others. Amid all the events he participated in, we highlight: Meeting of Styles (Alemanha), Museum of Public Art (Louisiana, EUA), MuBE – Brazilian Museum for Sculpture (São Paulo, Brasil), 1st Bienal del Sur (Panamá) and the Berardo Collection Museum’s 2nd anniversary party.

I went to the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale for about 2 1/2 years and then I ended up at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, which is was a Top 10 School at that time, I went for Media Art and Animation. After that I traveled and did murals of any art I could for about 1 1/2 years before I got my tattoo apprenticeship in South Florida. After my apprenticeship, I worked in a chain of shops for about 1 1/2 years and then got my first job at a custom shop, XUXU Tattoo. I worked there for about 2 1/2 years and grew as an artist tremendously and that’s when I decided to make my move to Atlanta. In three months of moving to Atlanta, I had my own private studio, then eight months later I opened my first shop. And 2 years later I open my second shop Anchor & Iron Social Club (A.I.S.C.). Me as an artist? It is really hard to pick out my style, but it would definitely be an illustrative style of tattooing with lots of color or tons of black and gray, I love doing that too . I definitely say my style is based in realism but it has a lot of surrealistic ties to it. I love working in portraits, bio-mechanical, new school and really anything that’s a real challenge. I like taking styles and bringing them together. Oh yeah, I can’t forget cover-ups, about half my work is a cover up and I try to make it to where you can’t tell. As far as my goals for the future? I just plan to grow my brand, grow my tattoo supply shop and continue to get published in magazines and win awards, other than that you know, I have bright hopes for the future. www.anchorironsocialclub.bigcartel.com

firewater redstarr Firewater Redstarr is a well-known, St. Louis, tattoo artist with whole lot of street credibility & a style that is all his own. Originally born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; where he returned to start his tattooing apprenticeship, now hails from the city of St. Louis, Missouri. He continues to make a name for himself & his “Ridah Movement” brand, in all aspects of the art world. Firewater excels both visually & musically. He is also an independent hip-hop artist, when not in the tattoo shop brainstorming with customers about custom tattoos. Firewater’s current single ‘How We Ride’ is in rotation on FM radio across the nation& his music is being heard as far as Canada, Brazil, Africa & the UK. Christopher Yepez I am both an artist and a writer. I started in the Tattoo Industry as a studio owner in 2006. I began tattooing and body piercing in 2008, but did not become a full-time professional Tattoo Artist until January 2013. I did not have a formal apprenticeship, but learned from the artists working with me in my studios, and various mentors.
