October 2014

I am writing my newsletter entry the day before the PTA Carnival. This annual event is the main fund-raiser of the PTA and much enjoyed by the students and families of ISL. I would like to thank three parents in particular who have assisted the faculty in organizing and running the Carnival this year. They are Mrs. Jeannie Calavrias, Mrs. Sharmaine Byrne and Mrs. Barbara Matthias. You may know that Barbara was a long standing teacher at the school until the end of last year and we still consider her an honorary staff member. As I wrote in an earlier email to parents, the number of parents, who are not teachers, on the PTA is at present very small. One effect of this is that the burden of organizing and running the Carnival has fallen on the teachers. Over the last few weeks teachers on the PTA, secondary form tutors and primary class teachers have put a tremendous amount of effort into organizing games and volunteering to work on the food and other stalls at the carnival. This really is not their core duty and takes too much of their energy and time away from educating your children. So, once again, this is a plea for more volunteers to join the PTA so that it really is a Parent-Teacher Association that shares the burden of organizing events and also acts as a communication channel between parents and teachers. Without more input from parents, we will not be able to continue to run large community events. The next meeting of the PTA is Tuesday 14th October at 1500hours. Please feel most welcome to come along. If you cannot make that meeting but would like to get involved, please email Jeannie Calavrias, PTA Chair, on jcalavrias@gmail.com and cc to Phil Bowen, Primary Principal, on primaryprincipal@islzambia.org In earlier newsletters, I have mentioned the proposed redevelopment of the ISL buildings and facilities that we are working on with a group of architects and engineers. We are still very much in the early stages of prioritizing, planning and investigating ways to fund the redevelopment. However, I thought you might like to see a couple of early renderings of possible adaptations of some of our major buildings. The two possible projects illustrated here are not necessarily the first things that will be tackled – we are more likely to prioritize teaching spaces first – but they do give us some ideas of what may be achievable with the will and adequate funding.
