PINK SHIRT DAY: BE AN UPSTANDER By: Melanie Morales, David Batista and Alexandra Sherman

On Wednesday, May 3, the Middle School and High School are celebrating Pink Shirt Day from 7:30-12. For whomever isn’t aware, Pink Shirt Day is a day where people wear pink shirts to symbolize anti-bullying. The purpose of Pink Shirt Day is to raise awareness on bullying as well as giving advice on how to deal with it and become an upstander. This notion originated when a student called Jadrien Cota was bullied for wearing a pink shirt during the first day of school. David Shepherd and Travis Price of Berwick, Nova Scotia, bought and distributed 50 pink shirts after that occurred. That day, Middle School students will be enrolling in several bullying activities; these include acting and improv, reflections on videos, and team-working activities. Additionally, a group of psychologists that work in Fundacion Relaciones Sanas will be coming to the school and speaking to the students about bullying and the effects it has on others. This year’s theme is cyberbullying, because every day, more people are being bullied on social media or witnessing it. We hope that the students will attend that day and wear pink shirts to support being an upstander and go against bullying. On the other hand, the Pink Shirt Day HS team will be selling exclusive, custom ISP pink shirts from April 24 to May 4 in order to both promote Pink Shirt Day on May 4 and provide the Pink Shirt Day Panama NGO with all our profits. The HS team has organized a deal with Vice Principal Mr. Mattiace and Principal Mr. Monson that will allow the owners of these special shirts to wear their shirts, along with jeans or the school pants, every Friday that follows May 4 until the end of the school year. The HS team truly hopes that these shirts will remind students to make a positive impact on their community. Additionally, HS will be coordinating with the MS team to take a school wide picture on May 3 during the last fifteen minutes of school. Students, emblazoned in pink, will arrange themselves in the shape of a pink shirt and an overhead picture will be taken. This image will demonstrate the concept that when we put on our pink shirts, we metaphorically tell ourselves to stand together as a community against manipulation, teasing, and the mistreat of peers, but when we take this picture, we are literally standing together. If you are looking to obtain one of these shirts, please bring $10 and pay Kashma (she’s located in the Counselor’s Plaza). She’ll put your name on the list for pre-orders. We only have 100 shirts, so get your own shirt ASAP! The shirts will be distributed on May 3rd and continue to be sold on that day and May 4 for students who really want a shirt and simply forgot to pay. If you are a parent reading this, then please put that money in your children’s backpack’s now!

Preschool Alida Garcia de Paredes, —Pre-K Principal—agdp@isp.edu.pa When: Friday May 5, 2017 Place: PK Area

Coming soon MAY 5th PK 3 and 4 Art Show! Why: Every year preschool does a community outreach project, the idea behind is to have children helping children. PK students have worked very hard to create wonderful masterpieces around the theme of the year, eco- friendly. They want to raise funds to grant a very special wish on behalf of the Make-A-Wish Foundation to Alexandra Concepción. Alexandra is a five years old girl who wishes to have a beautiful room where she can rest and get stronger to fight an acute lymphoblastic leukemia. PK 3.3 We’ve discovered many ways in which we can use recycled materials to make fun and beautiful masterpieces. Can you guess what we are making with recycled egg cartons?

PK4.3 As our Art Show event approaches, PK4 students are getting ready to make your jaws fall open with their amazing creations. Can you guess what are we making?
