My first car was a 1957 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia. Everything went wrong with that car. The horn stuck, the emergency brake cable broke, second gear dropped and I needed the transmission rebuilt. Oh and then one day the steering started malfunctioning and I couldn’t make reliable turns! By some miracle I was able to point it toward the driveway of a Volkswagen mechanic when the steering cable snapped! I’ll never forget that day. If another car had been in the way, I wouldn’t have been able to turn around it.

My second car was a 1969 BMW 1600, the smaller version of the classic 2002. I had bought it from my music teacher. He was a violinist and hadn’t taken care of it. So the first thing I found out was that I was driving it without oil. That would be my downfall on a trip to San Francisco a few months later. The car lost power, then after I started it with a jumper cable, white smoke started pouring from the engine. I learned later that the valves were shot. I was so far away from home that I had to sell it to a BMW dealer at a loss.

My third car was a Fiat sedan. First the fuel pump went. Then the engine started making rattling noises, as if something were lose inside, but I could never find out what it was. I loaned it to a friend while I was on a trip and she had so many problems with it that she gave it back to my parents and they sold it for scrap.
