What to Wear to Your First Pilates Class Over the past few years, it seems as if Pilates is taking the nation by storm as health professionals and celebrities act as proponents of this popular form of exercise. As the popularity of Pilates continues to grow, it is more accessible than ever before, as Los Angeles Pilates classes are offered every day. Many people are eager to delve into Pilates but often hesitate to sign up for a class because they are unsure of what to wear. Some articles of clothing are associated with certain forms exercises, like yoga pants or running shorts. In the case of Pilates, however, potential Pilates enthusiasts are left to fend for themselves in determining what clothes to wear to their first Pilates class. Fortunately, your friends at Sheppard Studios have compiled a list to guide you in compiling a Pilates wardrobe. When getting dressed for Pilates, you want to make sure you wear comfortable clothing to perform a wide range of movements; however there are other things to consider as well. Tops •

Many Pilates first-timers are tempted to wear baggy or oversized shirts in hopes of moving comfortably. To their surprise, baggy clothing is not the most nears on the uncomfortable side of the spectrum. This surprise occurs for two reasons. One reason is the nature of the movements of Pilates. Many Pilates poses require folding your body over. Though you may perform that movement with ease, your shirt will reveal your back, stomach, and chest. Certain Pilates methods, such as the Sheppard Method implement Balanced Body equipment. Baggy clothes are prone to getting caught in the equipment—yet another reason to leave behind your oversized shirt. Consider wearing an athletic tank (by Nike or Lululemon) with a built-in bra, which offers support and the right amount of coverage. Athletic tops are often made of durable fabrics and can be layered without looking bulky.

Bottoms •

Similar to tops, pants and shorts should be comfortable but not too loose. Avoid pants with flowing fabric because they too can get caught in equipment. Moreover, baggy clothes will inhibit your instructor from supervising your body alignment. In addition to fit, you will need to consider the material of your clothing. Pants made from nylon are often slippery so wear with caution. Shorts can be worn during for Pilates but avoid a pair that will restrict your movement since Pilates movements tend to be wide legged. Choose pants and shorts that are form fitting and made from durable material. When bottoms on, check to see if they ride up—you don’t want to be tugging on your pants or shorts during the entire class.

Now that you have a guide for choosing clothes, you are ready to sign up for Los Angeles Pilates classes.
