Some people were born with a silver spoon. Some had to buy the silver spoon. Different itinerary, same result. Although option 1 is awfully nice, I like the second one better. When you make money from the product of your brain & muscles, you have a better appreciation of it. It feels like real money. You can spend it with a sense of achievement and pride. Back in time, a few hundred if not a few thousand years ago, you did not get to choose and trying to get ahead did not pay off much. You were born in the right family or you worked for that family. Times, they have changed, Good thing. Those who enjoyed luxury from Day 1 are still fine, until the next “Cultural Revolution”. Those who can use their brains to strike success and gold are now welcome to the big league. The more the merrier and the more money to share. Today, affluence is mostly self-made. That the conclusion (one of them) of the new White Paper “The New Rules of Luxury Living” published by Luxury Portfolio International in conjunction with YouGov and media giant Time Inc. This decade –long study of High Net-Worth Individuals around the world, “looks to uncover the truth about how affluent people live, work and play”. The authors of the White Paper, Dr. Jim Taylor and Chandler Mount, noted that the number of millionaires in the US multiplied 25 times over the last 35 years, from 574,000 in 1980 to over 14 million in 2015. The boom is a global phenomenon. According to Credit Suisse, the annual growth rate of HNWI since 2010, worldwide, turns out to be 6.85%.

China has been the overall winner of the gold rush. The research suggest that Chinese consumers represent now roughly a third of the global luxury market, up from one-fifth in 2010 and “only” 1% in 2000. We’ll see if they manage to keep the pole position going forward in a more challenging economic environment. Let’s now take a good look at what makes today’s wealthiest individuals special and different. Not in the way they make their money but rather in the way they spend it; the way they live their lives. The study shows that their N.1 goal is fulfillment, at work and at home. They buy gorgeous homes (Thank you), fine objects and enjoy the best in the way of experiences. These fortunate people, according to YouGov, share the following 5 trends: The desire to be victorious. Luxury purchases represent the buyers’ victory over the challenges they had to overcome. “The increasingly victorious luxury real estate consumer is one who can afford to focus on what makes his home happy. The primary residence is a comfortable refuge, a place to entertain, a place to raise successful children and, ideally, an investment that pays off in the long run”.

The ability to discern. Luxury is an education. Successful people learn from experiences. They know what is good; they know what is better; they know what is best. They know the difference between the comfort & service they can get at a 4star hotel and a 5star hotel.
Luxury is increasingly independent. The White Paper shows that HNWI prefer brands that work independently from the mainstream. Big names are not necessarily best. We think differently. That reminds me of a conversation I had in Europe MANY years ago with a top American business executive. He was telling me then that if you want to sell anything in the US, like a VW Beetle or a Frigidaire, you had to advertise that everybody has it or wants it. I told him that if you were to apply the same sales technique in France, nobody would buy the darn thing because everyone wants to be different. Funny thing to see that our country is catching the European love for differentiation…. At a time when Europe is actually going the other way…. Go figure. The desire to collect is passion based. The goal is not to collect a lot of things, it is to collect the best of things. True for homes. True for cars. True for watches. “It is worth it”, as the commercial goes. The decline in brand power.
