ions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization with more than 1.3 million members in more than 45,000 clubs worldwide. Clubs are comprised of active men and women in more than 200 countries and geographic areas. The Lions Clubs are best known for fighting blindness. This effort is supported by conducting vision screenings, equipping hospitals and clinics, distributing medicine and raising awareness of eye disease.

Lions work through their mission of providing vision for all. Lions have extended their commitment to sight conversation through countless local efforts and through their International Sight First Program, which works to eradicate blindness. The Plant City Lions Club was established in 1929 and is credited with being an integral part of starting the Florida Strawberry

Festival in 1930. This partnership continues as the Plant City Lions Club hosts the annual Florida Strawberry Festival Queen’s Pageant. The Pageant is one of three major fundraising events for the Plant City Lions Club. The club also hosts an annual golf tournament and runs an 11 day food booth at the Florida Strawberry Festival. As a result of the continued success of these major fundraising events, the Plant City Lions Club has a rich history of supporting much needed outreach in our local community and beyond. In addition to supporting local and international sight programs, the Plant City Lions Club supports local organizations like Meals on Wheels, the United Food Bank of Plant City, Steppin Stone Farm, Southeast Guide Dogs, South Florida Baptist Hospital and more. Overall, the Plant City Lions Club invests more than $50,000.00 annually into outreach.

The Plant City Lions Club is also credited with empowering the next generation. The clubs outreach dollars support scholarships for our local high schools and homeschool students, Boys and Girls Scouts, Boys and Girls Club, and Little League. Also, our Leo Program provides the youth of Plant City with an opportunity for personal development through volunteering. Leos from our local high schools provide volunteer support for all of the Plant City Lions Club events and activities. They are also active volunteers in their local high schools, for the Greater Plant City Chamber of Commerce and for the United Food Bank of Plant City. The Lions Club motto is “We Serve.” Lions are part of a global service network, doing whatever is necessary to help our local communities.

The Plant City Lions Club is proud to honor Auxiliary Members in this special section

The Plant City Lions Club Auxiliary has a long standing tradition of helping the Lions Club behind the scenes with the Strawberry Festival Queen’s Pageant. When the Lions Club first became a chartered club in 1929, it was an all male club. That is how the Ladies Auxiliary got started. It wasn’t until 1986 that the constitution of Lions Clubs International was amended to allow for women to become members. It would not be appropriate to have men helping in the dressing rooms and back stage at a pageant, so the wives of the members were a necessary extension of the club. Currently, women represent only 25% of the club, which has improved significantly in recent years, however, with the support of our Auxiliary, we keep the tradition alive. Thank you Auxiliary for keeping us close to our heritage. We appreciate all you do behind the scenes!!!!

The Florida Strawberry Festival a

Since 1930, the Florida Strawberry Festival has been recognized as an event that is rare among others of its kind. Throughout the last 84 years, we have remained current among societal and economical changes while holding true to our founding traditions. One of our most beloved and recognized traditions is the selection and reign of our Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and Court. Each year, we are honored to have five young ladies give so generously of their time to represent our Festival with dignity and class. They serve as some of the greatest ambassadors for our Festival as they interact with children, young adults, senior adults and visitors from around the globe. The Strawberry Queen and Court are recognized for their warm personalities, their intelligence and their embodiment of hometown charm. Through the hard work of many, the Strawberry Queen and Court program has gained attention and esteem throughout the country. I cannot recognize the respect that the Strawberry Queen and Court program has acquired over the years without recognizing the lady behind it all. I would like to personally thank our outgoing Queen and Court Coordinator, Mrs. Sandee Sytsma, for the values and the standards she has personally instilled in this program. Sandee, it is because of you that our Queen and Court are so well-respected today. Thank you for embodying what it means to be a true lady and for setting a high moral standard for our Queen and Court to emulate in their own lives. To Mrs. Donna Keel and Mrs. Di Lott, thank you for agreeing to coordinate our Queen and Court program. I have great confidence that you both will be an asset to our young ladies and will be able to carry on the high standards of our program. Thank you to the Lions Club for their continuing support of the Strawberry Festival. The 2014 Florida Strawberry Festival is quickly approaching, and I am looking forward to celebrating our event that is what we believe to be “Florida’s Best Family Recipe!” We have one of the greatest, most diverse entertainment lineups I believe we have had in many years, and I hope you will consider attending a concert, supporting our youth livestock shows, seeing our on-grounds entertainment, volunteering throughout our grounds and supporting our vendors. Thank you to the Plant City community for continuing to support our Festival and our Queen and Court, and I wish all the best to each of the young ladies competing in the Florida Strawberry Festival Queen’s Competition. I can’t wait to meet the 2014 Florida Strawberry Festival Queen and Court and have an outstanding year. Sincerely,

Paul Davis General Manager 10 Plant City Lions Club

Hillsborough County Royalty

By Ted Campbell, Executive Director, Florida Strawberry Growers Association

The Queen is the icon of the Strawberry Festival, but the King of Agriculture in Hillsborough County is the Strawberry. Each winter our farmers plant 10,000 acres – over 200 million plants – predominately within a 20-mile radius of Plant City, Florida. This is probably the most densely concentrated specialty crop in America. Why Plant City? For over 100 years, multiple generations of farmers have enjoyed the well-drained sandy soil combined with the ideal winter climate of warm days, cool nights, and hardly any rain. Our delicious strawberries are hand picked continuously from Thanksgiving until Easter every year. Plant City’s family-owned strawberry farms generate almost half of Hillsborough’s agricultural value on only 4 percent of the county’s ag land. That pushes Hillsborough into the top 10 ag counties in the U.S. while generating over $800 million in economic benefit for this area. Direct strawberry farm employment is about 17,000 with another 38,000 Americans employed in supporting jobs, many within the surrounding community. People see the thousands of workers required for field labor, but consider the local jobs to provide packaging, plastic, chemicals, refrigeration, irrigation systems, transportation, and capital equipment. Also remember the accountants, lawyers, payroll systems, insurance, maintenance workers, hardware suppliers, retailers of tires, fuel, groceries and many more businesses within our community who benefit. Few people realize the strawberry growers fund over $700,000 in annual research at the University of Florida to help sustain the industry. Add in the Strawberry Festival’s economic boost, and you begin to comprehend the immense impact of strawberries. So when you eat America’s favorite fruit this winter, remember that sweet juicy berry is one of the largest economic engines in Plant City!

Changing of the Guard By Erica Der

Buckingham Palace and the royalty that inhabits her halls are guarded by a noble and prestigious protector known simply as “The Queen’s Guard.” And while the Plant City Palace has a few more strawberries and a few less rooms, the sentinels that protect her royalty can be heralded with the same moniker. Since 2002, Sandee Sytsma has been the honorable leader of “The Queen’s Guard” and has molded a successful Strawberry Queen program into an opportunity for young women to become more than they thought possible. Sixty young ladies have made up the Strawberry Festival Queen and Court for the last 12 years and have learned from Sandee’s guidance how to apply lipstick, dance the polka, write a thank you note, treat others with respect and, in short, how to be a lady. Strawberry Queen is about more than a glamorous pageant with lots of rhinestones and big hair. It’s about tradition and carrying on a legacy of grace and class that much of the world has forgotten. Sandee has been there to remind the queen and court of life’s most important lessons and, in the process, has given Plant City a group of representatives that the town can be proud of year after year. Sandee’s leadership is a legacy that has left a mark on far more than simply the girls in her program. But like all great things, there comes a time to begin again. And just like the protectors of Buckingham Palace, the Strawberry Festival will have its own “Changing of the Guard” as Sandee has decided to hand down her role as Queen Mother to two new Queens Mom’s, Donna Keel and Di Lott, each of whom was handpicked by Sandee herself. 48 Plant City Lions Club 2014

Donna served as Junior Royalty Chair for the past 20 years and was a part of the Queen’s Court in 1984 and 1985. Di’s daughter Ericka is the current First Maid and both Donna and Di’s husbands serve as Festival Associate Directors. “It was an honor that Sandee would select us to carry on the prestigious program that she has worked so hard to build over the past 12 years,” Di said. Donna and Di will take over the program in 2015 after they spend the next year shadowing Sandee and learning about every square inch of the program. They have already spent a great deal of time working to ensure that the Queen’s Court success continues on for many, many years. Yes, there will be much time and effort committed, but with that effort comes a wonderful opportunity to make memories and help in shaping the young ladies of Plant City. “I’m looking forward to building relationships with each new group of girls and hope to positively influence their lives in some way, as a mom, in their education, and simply learning about life,” Donna said. “I’m also looking forward to having many, many new daughters.” Taking over the reigns from Sandee will be no easy task, but she has full confidence in Donna and Di’s ability to lead and bring a fresh, new perspective to the program. And as for what it will take to fill Sandee’s shoes, the Queen Mother has the perfect response, “Donna and Di don’t need to worry about filling my shoes. They will be getting their own new shoes and are certain to fill them perfectly.”
