It’s that time of year again. All of our sports are special and all teach valuable life lessons that have the potential to change the lives of young people for the better. In Northeast Florida, however, there’s just something about high school football. Maybe it’s the sheer number of schools in the area. Maybe it’s the tremendous talent that is found here. Maybe it’s the close proximity to some of the best football teams – high school, college, and pro – anywhere. Maybe it’s all of the above. At any rate, football season is special. And it’s right here upon us. As I sit here and write this, it’s mid-July and football season is still several weeks away. How-

ever, putting this issue together makes the season feel as though it’s much closer than it really is. I can already feel the excitement, the tension, the rivalry. This edition spends most of its space covering two sports very close to the Northeast Florida community: As mentioned, football, and cross country. The Jacksonville/Northeast Florida region are well known for both and churn out elite-level football players and runners each year. The August edition signifies the beginning of the publishing year for us. We take a short break after the June edition comes out. During our hiatus, we gather information for our pre-season football features and begin working on content for the remainder of the calendar year. The August edition brings with it a feeling of newness, of rejuvenation, of a fresh start. And nothing adds to that feeling of anticipation like a magazine full of pre-season football features. We take a look at all of the area teams while also spotlighting several of the most heavily recruited players in the region. Want to know how your team stacks up this year? Look no further than the August edition of In the Game. Is your favorite player one of the best around? A quick glance through

this edition will answer that for you. Maybe football isn’t your sport. You’d rather lace up a pair of running shoes and find a sidewalk, road, track, or trail for a few miles of solitude. Northeast Florida has a robust running, swimming, cycling, and multi-sport community. Talented endurance athletes of all ages are found here, and that spawns top-notch high school programs. This month, we take a look at a few of the cross country teams and individuals runners who are expected to finish the year at the pointy end of the field. This feels like a new beginning, an opportunity for a fresh start. At In the Game, the opening of school and the start of football season is one our most exciting times. We hope all of you feel our passion and love for the sport. As I sit at my computer, the thermometer says it is 101 degrees. That doesn’t feel like football weather but make no mistake about it – football is in the air. We feel it and we hope you can as well.

Atlantic Coast Stingrays

Coach Elliot Taking Over One of the Steadiest Programs in Area In early 2015, legendary coach Kevin Sullivan retired after 33 years of coaching with the past five being the head coach of Atlantic Coast football program. Over those five years, the Stingrays went 32-18 and have built a winning tradition at a school that has only been around just as long. Long-time assistant coach Matt Elliot is taking over a program that finished 7-3 in 2014.

The production on offense by last year’s seniors will be missed. In 2014, TE Chris Cunningham and wideout David Gardner accounted for 62 percent of the total passing offense

and also caught six of the eight touchdown passes. Despite losing their top two rushers to graduation, sophomore Terrell Wright is primed to carry the ground game in 2015 behind lead blocker

Defensively, Noble Tribune will be returning to the secondary, having registered three of the team’s eight interceptions a year ago. The Stingray’s roster also includes the areas

top kicking prospect, Trey Simons who averaged 90 percent kicks

made and a long of 45 yards.

Mandarin Mustangs

Mustangs Carry Success into 2015 Season “We accomplished some things that had not been done at Mandarin in several years,” said Mustangs head coach Brian Braddock. “Our expectations are now higher, and we still have a lot of work to do to realize the potential that this program has.” The team returns a total of 11 starters (six on offense, five on defense); leading the way offensively will be quarterback Tyler Greenlee and running back Aundre Kearney. Kearney will also see time on defense, where he will be joined by defensive back Anthony

Brown (who led the team in interceptions in 2014). The returning starters will lead the charge, but Coach Braddock believes that the rest of the team will follow suit. “The offseason in the weight room was tremendous for our team,” he said. “We plan to be a stronger, more disciplined version of ourselves than we have ever produced before.” The Mustangs open the season on the road against the Bears of Bartram Trail High School (St. Johns, Fla.) on Aug. 21. But, in the eyes of the team, each game is

just as important as the next. “The challenge is not worrying about the opponent, but focusing on yourself and what you need to do to improve every day. If we do that, Fridays will take care of themselves.”

Passing Game Set to Soar for Saints After putting up 42 points and winning by 4 touchdowns in each of their first two games of 2014, the Saints were primed for a great run. They would go on to lose their next two games to Fletcher and Flagler Palm Coast and were never really able to find an answer on defense for the remainder of the season. One thing that did not have to be addressed this past off season was the passing game. Illinois commit Eli Peters and Indiana commit Phil

The Mustangs of Mandarin High School look to build on recent success; last year, the team finished their first winning season since 2008. Along the way, they picked up impressive wins over Sandalwood (for the first time in six years) and perennial playoff contender Fort Pierce Central.

2015 PREVIEW BOYS Individual Runners to Watch Dominic Williams (Robert E. Lee) With his 15:48 5K Personal Best from last cross country season, Williams is not just the fastest returner, but also the most decorated. Coming off of a phenomenal track season as a state medalist in the 1600m, Williams will look to carry that momentum back to the podium in November.

Creekside’s Big Three

The Creekside boys are led by a trio of juniors; Matthew Clark, Nick Deal, and Jackson Storey. These athletes have already had tremendous success in both cross country and track. Storey is coming off of a brilliant sophomore season that saw him run 1:56 and 4:20 for 800m and 1600m respectively. Clark and Deal have both run under 4:40 for the 1600m, as well as under 16:05 for 5K. This trio will be a deadly force up front this season, and could lead the Knights to their first boys state title.

Trenton Liberty (Mandarin)

This year Liberty will be the leader of the Mustangs storied Cross Country program. Liberty was the star last year, posting a personal best of 16:05 and narrowly missing All-State honors. After running under 10 minutes for 3200m this track season, he should be ready to make the big jump and earn All-State honors this season.

Others to Watch David Hall (Oakleaf) Terrance Sessoms (Sandalwood) Jordan Bubar (Bartram Trail) Sem Zhdanov (Mandarin) Michael Cassette (Mandarin)

GirlS Individual Runners to Watch Kayley Delay (Fletcher)

Delay was by far the most dominant runner in Northeast Florida last year. Her time of 17:58 was the third-fastest time in the state last year, earning her All-State honors. She continued that dominance into track season by posting the sixth-fastest 3200m time of 10:53 and the state-leading 1600m time of 4:57. Despite all of her success, Delay has never won a state title, and she will look to change that this season.

Mackenzie Wilson (Bolles)

Wilson has been one of the top runners in the area for her entire career, and will look to finish that career on top this fall. Despite finishing in the top five for three straight seasons, Wilson has never taken home the gold at the state cross country finals. However, the twotime 3200m state champion will be the favorite this year.

Kelly Aponte (St. Augustine)

Kelly burst on the scene last year, dropping her PR exponentially every race, until finally finishing runner-up at the state meet last November. This year she won’t be a surprise athlete, and she will be the favorite to win the 3A girls state title. She is one of the most laid back competitors in the entire state, and the pressure shouldn’t be a problem for Aponte. Look for her to be standing on top of the podium in November.

Others to Watch:

Tara Openshaw (Creekside) Ally Hajda (Bolles) Rachel Shapiro (Bolles) Emily Onimus (Saint Augustine) Lauren Stanford (Bartram Trail)

TEAMS TO WATCH Creekside Boys:

After a stellar fouth-place finish in 2014 the Knights return five of their top eight. Currently ranked second in 3A, the Knights will be a top contender to bring home their first state title. The boys are led by three juniors; Nick Deal, Matthew Clark, and Jackson Storey, who could all contend for All-State honors.

Bartram Trail Boys:

Despite losing a key group of seniors, the Bartram Trail boys should still be one of the top teams in North Florida this season. Under the leadership of Coach Paul Nowicki, who was recently inducted into the FACA Hall of Fame, the Bears will be a strong team and be at their best come November. Led by senior Jordan Bubar, the Bartram boys could be the surprise team in 3A.

Bishop Kenny Boys:

The Crusaders are always a top-five team in class 2A, and this year should be no different. With a deep squad, and a slew of sub 17-minute 5K runners, the Crusaders should be one of the top finishers in 2A.

Bolles Boys:

Under the leadership of new coach Mike Rivera, the Bolles boys have blossomed over the past year. The young Bulldogs are poised to contend with Bishop Kenny for private-school dominance in North Florida.

Mandarin Boys:

Creekside Girls:

Despite losing three pivotal members of their 2014 state title team, the lady Knights will still be one of the area’s top teams. Led by Tara Openshaw and Kaitlyn Rocker, the Knights will have another solid season, and should be the top area team in 3A for another year.

Another talented team led by Coach Jim Schmidt. The Mustangs return two sub 10-minute 3200m runners and a 4:20 miler to their squad for the 2015 season. They will easily be the top area team in 4A.

Nease Girls:

Bolles Girls:

Saint Augustine Girls:

The Lady Bulldogs will be out to claim their fourth-straight 2A state title, and should have no trouble accomplishing that feat. With two state champions across three events in track, and four girls returning with sub 19 5K times, the Bulldogs are scary good. With another win this year, they should cement themselves as one of the greatest dynasties in the history of Florida girls cross country.

Led by senior Katie Potts, the Nease girls will have another solid team. In a down year for North Florida girls in 3A, the Panthers could surprise Creekside as the area’s top team in 3A despite losing standout senior Yaranel Abreu. With the talented duo of Kelly Aponte and Emily Onimus, the Jackets will have some great firepower up front. If they can develop some younger runners, they too could be the top area girls’ team in 3A.

Fletcher Enters First Season Under Medlock

With a competitive district in 2014, Fletcher was able to qualify for postseason play despite their 2-2 record. The Senators would go on to defeat Oak Ridge in the first round of the 7A playoffs but eventually lost to the undefeated

Oakleaf Knights in the Regional Semifinals. The biggest weapon on offense this year will be TE Chris Ellington who was unfortunately sidelined by injury last year, but currently holds multiple offers at the DI level. Last years leading receiver Kalif

Jackson is now a freshman at the University of Florida, but senior Chrisjohn Roscoe is ready to take over the role in 2015. The offensive line includes college prospects Randy Lopez, William Bivens, and SaDarren Moody. Jacquez Williams will lead the secondary that is the team’s deepest unit with Devin Watters, Zach Thorton and Chase Harrison all bringing starting experience.

Bucs Find New Meaning in 2015 The Buccaneers have enjoyed 10-plus win seasons since 2010, including an undefeated regular season at the 8A level in 2014. First Coast will drop back down to 7A in 2015 and will compete for a district title against Atlantic Coast, Lee, Fletcher and Columbia (Lake City). The Bucs met little competition in 2014 as told by their +21 point differential and 12 consecutives wins before losing in to Apopka in the regional finals. With the loss of “Mr. Football”, DeAndre Johnson, to graduation, the Bucs will face a formidable challenge trying to find a replacement for the four-year

starter. Johnson threw for an unparalleled 3,783 yards and 47 touchdowns and was a dynamic piece to the team’s success last year. Senior QB Javaro

Hardy looks to be the front-runner for taking the snaps in 2015. A starting running back has yet to be named, but the young backfield does know that they will be running behind two FIU linemen commits in Dallas and Douglas Connell. The offense will also be returning with standout receiver Kevin Stepherson who is verbally committed

to Notre Dame. Stepherson accumulated 756 yards with 11 TDs and led the team with a 22.9 yards per catch average. The strongest unit on defense will be First Coast’s secondary with Khalil Bryant and Jaylon McClain-Sapp starting. The Bucs open up the season at home against Arlington Country Day, but the following weeks will

prove to be a challenge as they travel to Gainesville and Central (Miami) in consecutive weeks. The 2015 Buccaneers will be playing for more than just champioship aspirations. They will be playing in remembrance of teammate Johnnel Johnson and classmate Jaquan Reeves whose lives were lost prematurely last school year.

After the 2014 season, head coach Josh Corey departed the Fletcher program for the NFL, creating the opportunity for longtime assistant coach Ricky Medlock to take over a program that has not had a losing season since 2006. Since 2010, the Senators have gone 41-10 and have seen numerous players to go on and play at the next level. There will be some slight adjustments made in 2015, but being that Coach Medlock is a familiar face around the program, the transition period will be minimal.

A few of the Generals’ signature wins last year include defensive shutout against Baldwin, Westside, and Jackson. All year, the defense only gave up 179 points and outscored their opponents 150-42 in their seven wins.

The Generals will be moving up one classification to 7A in 2015 and have to compete against First Coast, Fletcher, Atlantic Coast and Columbia for a chance at a district title. Running back Tony Belle, who toted the ball 100 times for 506 yards in 2014, will be the starter in the backfield. Belle also led the team in receiving yards. Golden Eagles Look to Fly High in 2015 The Fleming Island Golden Eagles finished 5-5 in the 2014 season, but only secured one win in four district contests (a 27-13 road victory against Fletcher High School). For the 2015 season, the team is using the less-than-impressive outing from a year prior as motivation. “We are focusing on eliminating turnovers and protecting the football,” said Fleming Island head football coach Frank Hall. The team is return-

ing a solid core of players; there will be nine starters present from last year’s team (four on defense, five on offense). “Our running backs,

our kicking game, and our defensive line should be strong,” Coach Hall said. “I believe we can compete for a district title.”

The 2015 Lee High Generals’ roster will look very similar to 2014, but they will be returning to the field much more experienced than a year ago. The Generals went 7-3, but a 3-3 district record was not enough to qualify for the postseason.

Oakleaf Knights

Oakleaf Built for State

photography by Kent Romig

When head coach Derek Chipoletti took over the Oakleaf program in 2012, the Knights had only won three out of their first 20 games since the school’s inception in 2010. Fast forward to 2015, and the Knights are one of the highest ranked teams in Northeast Florida due to their undefeated 2014 regular season and deep playoff run. Furthermore, 14 starters are back in 2015 primed to make a run at state.

“The standard has been set at Oakleaf,” Chipoletti said. “We will win games and put ourselves in a position to be successful based on the way we become men off of the field. The winning will take care of itself if we are concerned about becoming outstanding young men.” As one of the most productive offenses in 2014, the Knights have deep roster of proven playmakers and promising under-

classmen. “We lost four starters on the OL, but having such a solid core of offensive skill players returning will help us,” stated Chipoletti. The only returning starter on the line is nationally ranked JeVionte Nash, who is currently committed to Wake Forest. Third-year starter at quarterback, Jordan Johnson, earned All-Area accolades in 2014 and passed for just shy of 2,000 yards during his sopho-

more season. Much of Johnson’s success can be attributed to offensive weapons Keylan Brown, Desmon George, and Cari Coleman, who will all be back on the field in 2015. It can be expected again that the Knights will be one of the top spread offenses in the area. Just like the offense, the Knight defense, led by long-time Miami linebacker commit Shaquille Quarterman, returns most of their

starters. Quarterman has flourished in the 4-3 defense by recording 137 solo tackles a year ago. DeAndre Steelman will start at linebacker in 2015, but is one of the most versatile players on the roster with starting experience at every defensive position in his three years at Oakleaf. Also returning is DT Clay Brooks, who registered five sacks and 12 TFL’s. “We will have a solid front seven and

must replace Chris Westry and Carlos McCracken, but I believe our young men out there will rise to the occasion,” said Chipoletti. The secondary has lost some depth, but returning players Nick Roberts, Kalif Copeland, and Tyrell Brown will bring a lot of production back in 2015. Roberts topped Northeast Florida with seven interceptions in 2014; Copeland and Brown combined for another four.

Creekside Knights

Creekside Knights: New Staff, Same Desire to Succeed

photography by Ray DiMonda

Practice makes perfect. It is the mantra of the 2015 Creekside Knights, and leading the way is new head coach Jeff Schaum. “We just want to play the best we can and improve every day,” he said. “If our team plays unselfishly, intelligently, and with teamwork, we will compete.” Last year’s team went 3-8, but the past is just that when it comes to this year’s Knights. The football program has seen a complete overhaul; the only coach remaining in position from 2014 is JV head coach Ron Isaaco. “We just want to do what our players can do,” Coach Schaum said. “We just want them to have fun. Ed White Commanders

Experienced O-Line Poised to Lead 2015 Commanders Amidst an unforeseen mid-offseason coaching change and numerous player transfers, you would think the Commanders were coming off of a dismal 2014 campaign. However, this could not be any further from reality. The Commanders went undefeated (6-0) in their district and would make it to the 6A State Regional Finals before falling to Choctawatchee. Coach Terry Gilliam will take over the program in 2015, but he is not an unfamiliar face. He was the head coach of the Commanders from 2004-2012 before being replaced by Paul Pierson for the 2013 and 2014 seasons. The Commanders lost their all-purpose backs Taylor Thomas and Javaris Davis to graduation, but it looks like it will not slow down the ground game due to much of the production came from a monstrous O-line. Thomas and Davis were exceptional backs who signed with Oregon State and Auburn respectively, but

the push from Jordan Johnson and Curtis Dunlap, whom currently hold offers from various D-I colleges, was a tremendous factor in their success. The defense will be anchored by 2014 leading tackler Avery Wilds and linebacker Brian Furguson. “We prepare our players by telling them to do ordinary things

better than anyone else,” said Gilliam. This simplified approach serves as a constant reminder that perfection is impossible, but it will teach his players that as long as they are doing better than the man across from them, they are winning. The 2015 Commander’s roster is fitting for the phrase “Those who stay, will be champi-

ons”, made famous by legendary Michigan coach Bo Schembechler, who took over a program that saw his players numbers decrease from 140 to 75 when he was hired. Ev-

ery player that stayed for four years under Schembechler, walked away with a Big Ten Championship ring.

of determined role players. They will have 14 familiar faces in the starting ranks, including six on offense and eight on defense. The

“We had three close losses in 2013, and three close losses in 2014,” Coach Miller said. “Those types of losses are hard memories in a rebuilding process.”

Bartram Trail Bears

Bear’s Strength Key Factor in Reclaiming District In 2014, Bartram Trail gave up less than 10 points in seven of their 10 games. The stingy defense help guide the Bears to a 7-4 record, but a late-season loss to rival Creekside High kept the Bears from the post season for the first time in 6 years. Although the defense returns only three starters from 2014, coach Sutherland is confident that his squad will continue their strength first mantra. “This group has set numerous records in the weight room this winter and spring,” Sutherland said. “They run to the ball very well. They are a physical group that should create numerous turnovers.” The Bears 3-3-5 defense, led by veterans Michael Clark, Jordan Helm, and Tanner Murphy, will place a lot of importance on

their secondary to fill multiple roles within the scheme. Graduated linebacker Hayden

Good produced a team-leading 63 solo tackles in 2014 and it is yet to be determined who will fill that role in 2015. Prospective linebackers include Gavin Powell, John Wilson, and Nicos Rivera.

Offensively, the Bears return 10 starters to the spread triple option led by sophomore quarterback Joey Gatewood. Gatewood is the area’s most sought after recruit in the class of 2018 and is entering an offense that amassed over 2,100 yards on the ground last year. Perhaps one of the most under rated running backs in St. Johns County is senior running back David Coleman who has racked up 2,477 yards and 23 TDs over the past two years. Up front, lineman Jake McKay, Brady Keller, and Jared Nourse will bring invaluable starting experience. Bryce Walker and Dallas Geiger will lead

into 2015 as the top passing targets, but are very deep with skilled receivers ready to make an impact as the Bears look to amp up scoring. Coach Sutherland has always been known as more than just a football coach and his efforts for instilling exemplary conduct within his program continues to resonate with incoming classes. “This is a wonderful group of young men,” stated Sutherland. “ They are fantastic football players and even better young men. They embrace their roles as campus leaders, and represent our program well – on and off the field.”

Nease Panthers

Nease Striving for First Winning Season in Six Years As Nease High School attempts to bring itself back to the glory years of the mid-2000s, Tim Krause in his second year as head coach is finding himself with only four returning starters on defense and seven on offense. Krause, formerly the offensive coordinator at Bishop Kenny, was 4-6 last season, and 1-3 in the region. It’s tough being in the same region as wellestablished teams like Creekside, Bartram Trail, and St. Augustine, and in the last few years Nease has struggled to gain any dominance against these teams. The Panthers’ offense, led by quarterback Leighton Alley, returns seven starters, four of which are wide receivers. Alley’s main target, Jephte Cesar, graduated last year, but Cam Adams, Michael Cotter, Marquise Davis and Reidar Hubbard are

ready to compete for the receiving leader spot. Also returning is center Zach Moss and linebacker Kendric Harris, who also plays running back and was the leading touchdown scorer last year, with 13. Alley, a 6’4”, 215-pound rising junior, hopes to best his records from last year, when he was 87/174 for 1,118 yards. On defense, Nease returns its leading tackler, senior Jordan Willis, who is a college prospect and last year recorded 107 tackles. Also returning are DBs Aris Duffey and Max Ragin, and linemen Adam Timmens. Nease High School has had three head

coaches in the past five years, none of whom finished with winning seasons. The state of the program has been on a decline since a loss in the FHSAA Championship in 2006, however head coach Tim Krause thinks this next year in Panther Stadium will be a better one. “I’m incredibly excited...it’s a place you don’t have to sacrifice anything. You’ve got all the things you need to be successful and enjoy working right there,” he said. As a Nease alumni myself, and on behalf of Panther fans everywhere, I hope he’s right about that.

open the 2015 season against Baker County at home, but everyone seems to be looking forward to the October 17th matchup against Ed White, who got the best of the Jackets in the regional semifinals last year.

St. Augustine’s last state title was in 2005, but they have not missed the playoffs since. The Jackets have gone 116-15 over the past decade and have not lost to a St. Johns County opponent since 2007. The 2014 Jackets reeled off six wins to start the season before their only regular season loss against Clay by four points. They made it to the regional semifinals, which, for most teams, would be enough for most teams to consider it a successful season, but the Jackets are primed to advance further in 2015.

The 2014 Trojans narrowly missed the playoffs, as it came down to a three-way tie with Ribault, Westside, and Bishop Kenny. An extra game was added to determine the winner via a one-quarter shootout and just could not get it going against the Wolverines in only 12 minutes of play. This has only fueled the fire for the Trojans, as they have relentlessly attacked the offseason with a purpose. One thing that coach Flynn continues to stress to his team is that being a football player at Ribault is more than just that. “We represent our fans, community and we want them to be proud of the way we play and carry ourselves on and off the field,”

said Flynn. “We invite former Ribault NFL players and college players to speak and encourage our team members. We worship together and help them prepare for the ACT, in addition to providing study hall.” Coach Flynn has very

high expectations of his defense that returns eight starters. Flynn stated, “I believe that this will be one of the best defenses in the area, led by defensive coordinator Kevin Smith (FSU graduate) and his defensive staff.” MLB Leon Huey has so-

lidified his position as captain of the defense by leading the team in tackles last year with 88. Coupled with defensive lineman Gentorris Jackson, the Trojans look to have one of the best run stopping defenses in the district.

Yulee Hornets

Backfield Duo Key to Hornet’s District Hopes Yulee emerged as the top team in Nassau County last year by beating West Nassau and Fernandina Beach, but the Hornets want more than just the county in 2015. The running attack led by tandem backs Kris Maxie and Jamari Peacock contributed greatly to the teams 2,700 rushing yards in 2014. Peacock, a bruising 220-pound running back currently holds offers from the likes of Florida State, Florida, and Georgia Southern and is expected to be the next great back out of Nassau County since Derrick Henry. Receiver Bryce Oldaker averaged 18 yards per catch in 2014 and has developed into a prominent threat in

the run first offense. Yulee will move from a seven team district in 5A to a five-team district with Paxon, Ribault, Suwannee, and Stanton. In 2014, the Hornets walked away with wins over Paxon and Stanton, which should make this years campaign to a district title manageable. High Offensive Production Expected for 2015 Sharks

The Sharks 2014 season may not have gone as planned, but one question was definitely answered. They now know who their quarterback will be for the next two seasons. Tronti became the starter in Week Two and eventually accumulated a county-leading 1,788 yards over nine games. We played a tough nondistrict schedule, which prepared us for district play. We were a very talented team with good

size and a lot of speed.” During the offseason, coach DuBose has addressed a key element missing from last year’s team. “Our weakness

was strength. We have dedicated our offseason to improve our overall strength.” The Wolverines will be returning six

offensive starters and four defensive. Amari DuBose who led the team in passing yards, rushing yards and total touchdowns last year,

spearheads the offensive attack in 2015. The Wolverine ground game is anchored by returning offensive lineman Michael Olak and Anthony Medlock, which should make it easier on a backfield that has no starting experience. We had a productive spring and will hopefully get better each week as the season progresses.”

Blue Devils Running Attack Key for 2015 The Blue Devils are coming off back-to-back 10-win seasons under fifth year head coach Josh Hoekstra. The 2013 team started off 3-5 before rattling off seven consecutive wins to the state title game, where they eventually fell to American Heritage. Last year however, the Blue Devils stormed the whole season, going 9-1, but were not able to make it out of regionals. A district championship would have been a tremendous success for the majority of teams in the area, but despite

the dominant regular season performance, the Blue Devils were wanting more. “We learned that we need to start fast and finish strong,” said Hoekstra, “We didn’t play very hard or to our ability in the playoff loss to Bishop

Kenny.” Many would say that Clay should have a “state championship or bust” approach to 2015, but Coach Hoekstra insists that the only goal they should be concerned with is competing for a district championship. If you take care of your district, then you will always have the opportunity to make a run at the title. Jake Smith will take over quarterback duties in 2015, replacing the

graduated dual-threat J.T Turner. The QB transition will likely be seamless because of the running back tandem of Colin Wilson and Bilal Ally. Wilson finished as the top rusher in Clay County, with over 1,500 yards and 27 TDs. In front of their running backs leading the way will be Jacob Conrad and Jarrod Leeds. Receiver Tony Stephenson averaged 15.5 yards per catch in 2014, and with the exodus of leading

receiver Chris Barron, his opportunity to contribute should increase greatly in the run heavy offense. Only two returning players, Tyler Allen and Mike Adams, were permanent fixtures on the defense in 2014. Combined, they registered 120 tackles and 5.5 sacks. Hoekstra sees his line-backing core as the strongest unit on defense and is looking for newcomers to fill roles on the line along side of Allen.

We have to do a better job of limiting the mistakes we make and taking advantage of field position.” The Falcons are primed to make an impact this year, returning a total of 19 starters between the offense and defense. “Offensively, we want to be a fundamental scoring machine,” Coach Turner said. “De-

fensively, we want to be sound and fly to the football. But our main goal is to compete each game – regardless of the outcome.” The team has been preparing since the spring, and their efforts were capped off with a win over Providence High School in their Spring game. “We just want to keep them on the steady incline of getting better,” Coach Turner said. “We would like to win at least six games this fall, finish in the top two, and win a playoff game.”

this year in regards to players feeling more confident in the system. Mondrell Jefferson will lead the secondary, as he is a proven defensive back that led the team in interceptions a year ago. Beyond Jefferson, the Wildcats are looking for

others to fill in the roles of those lost to graduation. Coach MacPherson stated that his team his young, but his tough love approach will create opportunities for motivated players to find a starting role. How long has your husband been coaching? Since 1992. How long have you lived in Jacksonville? Since July 2000. Our eldest child was about eight months old at the time. What is your role with the team? Are you more hands-off, on the sidelines, or are you hands-on with the team? My role is in support of my husband. I try to help in any way I can, whether it’s running errands to help out when he’s busy teaching / coaching, or bringing him lunch to show him I love being with him, even when it’s just for a few minutes. I go to the games and cheer the team on. You mentioned something about making dinners for the team, tell me more about that. A few times over the summer, we have about 12 or 14 players over for dinner for something my husband calls Leadership Council. He typically reads a leadership book with these players and they meet and discuss it over dinner. High school boys like to eat. What is your Friday night game day routine? I take Darrell lunch. I make dinner for our children and my parents. When we say grace, we also pray for the coaches and the team. Then my dad and I go to the games together. We sit with my husband’s parents. Are you friends with any of the other coaches’ wives? They are a great group of women. Most us have young growing families. That keeps us all moving in many directions. How did you and your husband meet? How long have you been married? I met Darrell at Virginia Tech at an FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) meeting. We have been married coming up on 23 years. Tell me about your kids, how old are they? What are their interests? Are they invested in the team as well? Our eldest, Caleb, is 15 and a rising sophomore at BTHS (where Darrell teaches and coaches). He actually played on the JV squad (as well as JV wrestling and JV lacrosse) this past year. He loves all sports and is a voracious reader. Elle is 13 and is a rising eighth-grader. She loves to play any sport or game you are willing to play with her. She enjoys arts and crafts and loves children. Elijah, our youngest, is 11 and a rising sixth-grader. He loves football and basketball, but basically anything that has him moving and playing makes him happy. Caleb was a ball boy through middle school. Eli will have the opportunity to be one starting this year. Elle hopes to volunteer helping sell t-shirts for the boosters. Is it difficult for your family to manage running a team and a family at the same time? Of course it can be tough running so many directions at once. Three children, all playing sports. Even I am still playing sports. The reality is, you make it work. Grandparents pitch in, families work together. Coaches’ families aren’t the only ones running so many directions. Is there anything else you want people to know about you or your husband or the team? We really feel blessed to be a part of the Bartram community. My husband loves teaching and coaching at Bartram Trail High School. This has been a wonderful place to raise a family.

Vikings Roster Loaded with Experience in 2015

photography by Maefred Grier-Haynes

There is a lot of buzz around the Viking program right now because of a senior class that boasts upwards of 10 college prospects. Augie DeBiase will take over quarterback duties from the graduated Micah Zanders. At his disposal will be two Florida Gator commits, Ronald Patterson and Rick Wells, who combined for over 1,500 yards in 2014. The Vikings will look to limit the passing turnovers this year, and a big factor in that will be getting the ground game going with running back Alex Rutledge, who netted 1,163 yards on 167 carries. Look for 330-pound tackle Solomon Kindley to dominate the line of scrimmage in his senior year. The pass rushing ability of JaQuan and Joshua Bailey will define the Vikings defense this year. Miami commit and 2014 tackle leader Michael Pinckney is expected to fill the role of captain on defense, while the secondary returns cover specialist Bishop Bonnett.

In 2014, Raines weathered one of the toughest schedules in the area that included an undefeated team

schedule does not get any easier for the Vikings in 2015, but as one of the area’s most experienced teams,

a state title is in their sights.

Andrew Jackson Tigers

Tigers Looking to Develop Under New Head coach First-year head coach Richard Barnes takes over a program that went 2-8 last year and is returning 10 total starters. Highlights from last year include a shutout of Terry Parker at home and a close 13-7 win over Baldwin. Jackson will rely on the experience of senior quarterback Raekwon Wall, who has started the past two seasons for the Tigers. While their backfield is young, senior lineman Zuriel Davis will aid in creating opportunities for the backs to find

the hole in the multiple Wing-T offense. On defense, Jackson boasts a very talented secondary in Avery Green and Jerraud Webster. Couple that with underclassman defensive backs Myles and Matt Wilson, and the Tigers are well

equipped to handle the passing attacks of Sandalwood, Ribault, and First Coast. Their success will rely heavily on their ability to stop the run. Coach Barnes stated, “The team is a young and hungry team that is looking

Jones will be without 2014 team rushing leaders Dexter Carter Jr. and Christian Bermudez, as well as captain lineman Jeremiah Theus, but junior running back E.J Porter is ready to carry the load in 2015. Defensively, linebacker Kyle Johnson and secondary standout

Ahman Ross return to a defense that registered four shutouts and only allowed 99 points in the 2014 regular season. In true Bolles fashion, it can be expected that they will reload with underclassmen that fit their system on both sides of the ball. Head coach Corky Rogers is nearing 450 career wins and has established a proven model for training players to flourish in his system. Through strict discipline and unparalleled commitment

to the weight room, the Bulldog’s Wing-T offense is the most efficient system in the state if not the country. At 70 years old, coach Rogers ranks sixth in the nation for all-time wins and says his decision to continue coaching is year-toyear. We are all thankful in Northeast Florida that we will get to witness at least one more year of high school football history. Bolles will open up the season at home against Lake Mary on August 28th, but their last regular season game against Raines has the makings to be one of the area’s most elite matchups.

Warriors Backfield Ready to Run in 15’ The Warriors finished the 2014 season an even .500 overall and in the district (2-2). They picked up wins against Jackson, Chiefland, Baldwin, Fernandina, and Keystone Heights, but will need to muster wins against district frontrunners Bolles and Raines in 2015 to be able to continue play into the postseason.

Returing to the offense is Nassau County elite running back Davion Dubose, who earned All-Area accolades from picking up 1,518 yards and 12 TDs a year ago. The Warriors will be without leading tackler Michael Dudzinksi, who registered 137 tackles, but defensive back transfer Ke’Shan Pennamon will bring a much needed boost to the secondary. quarterback Billy Cobb will bring a tremendous amount of experience as a starter. Cobb passed for 1,770 yards and 27 TDs. Cobb will have a host of offensive weapons, including running back Jalin Buie, wideout J.C Flowers, and First Coast transfer D.J. Matthews. Matthews, as a sophomore, lead the Buccaneers in

receiving yards. The deepest unit in 2015 will be Trinity’s secondary. Tyreke Johnson, as a freshman last year, led the team with three interceptions on a senior-heavy defense. Also returning is Reggie Gunn and Ohio State commit Shaun Wade. North Carolina commit Dominique Ross will be transition-

ing from defensive end to outside linebacker this year. This year, Trinity will only play five games against Northeast Florida opponents. Coach Dorminey is known for scheduling quality out of area opponents. Last year, this included traveling to both IMG Academy and Buford (Ga.) which

ended up being their only two blemishes on the schedule. Dorminey insists that those types of games are what helps his teams in the playoffs. The 2015 schedule will include trips to Godby and Lincoln in Tallahassee, as well as hosting 8A opponent West Orange (Miami).

The offense should remain relatively the same as they are returning eight starters, but Coach Kopp has introduced a new scheme for 2015 that may change stats but

hopes that it translates to more wins. Defensively, the Stallions will look for leadership from linebackers J.J. Jefferson and Cody Kobb as they are introduced to a new defensive coordinator and scheme. Providence will play its toughest schedule in school history, but playing six 2014 playoff teams will give them a good benchmark on how they stack up against Northeast Florida’s best programs. Those

teams include University Christian, Fletcher, Creekside,

North Florida Christian, Trinity Christian, and Oakleaf.

Eagle’s Strong Line Vital to Offensive Progress Episcopal started the season 5-0 last year before dropping their only two district games, which cut a rather successful season short. With the emergence of speedster running back Daniel Fisher accounting for 27 TDs, the 2014 Eagles secured a +12.2 point differential in 2014. The Eagles are searching for a replacement of Fisher’s hefty production, but offensive lineman Andrew Boselli and Conor Chepenik should create plenty of opportunities for the new backfield. Boselli is a hard commit to FSU and brings a lot of value to the development of the offense guided by junior quarterback Joseph Brunnell. Brunell

is entering year two as a starter for the Eagles and will look to A.J Wooten as a weapon out of the backfield. With only four returning starters on defense, the Eagles will turn to Darius Newbill and Grayson Vickers to take the lead in 2015. In 2014, the Eagles limited opposing offenses to just 20 points per game. Anytime a team can limit their opponent to

less than three touchdowns, it gives them a chance to a win. Team expectations are high as they enter year three of head coach Mark Brunell’s system. A great op-

portunity for the team this year is when they travel to West Florida to play Holmes County and to Georgia to take on Savannah Country Day.

Duval Charter Panthers

Panthers Look to Build on Success of 2014 “2014 was a breakthrough season for us,” said Duval Charter head coach Bernard Harrell. “Making the playoffs for the first time after coming so close in 2013; the kids finally got over that hump. Having a chance to taste the playoffs for the first time with so many kids coming back from last year’s team gives us the motivation to get back there and make some noise.” The Panthers had an impressive outing last season, finishing with a record of 8-2 (4-1 in District 2) and clinching a playoff berth. Although their title hopes were dashed with a 30-6 loss to North Florida Christian (Tallahassee, Fla.), their morale remains high and hopeful for this year. “This year’s team, we expect big things,” Coach Harrell said.

“We got a great core of student-athletes returning from 2014. Although we’re making the jump up to a higher classification, we feel with the schedule we played last

year, and the schedule put together this year, our kids will be battle tested and ready to compete for a playoff spot. This year we’re not happy just making the playoffs, our

kids are motivated to make a run at a championship.” The team is returning 13 starters; seven on the offensive side of the ball and six on defense. Coach Harrell believes that their core of returning starters will be a tremendous asset in a run to a title. “These kids have played a lot of football the last three years together; most of them

have been playing Varsity since ninth grade,” he said. “They’ve seen a lot and been through a lot as a collective group. I tell our players to just focus on doing their job at the highest level, every single play, and the wins will follow. If I can get all of our kids and coaches to buy into this philosophy, we’ll have a winning season.”

Eagle’s View warriors

For the Warriors, Playoffs are the Focus “We finished 6-4, but we left a couple of wins on the field,” said Eagle’s View Academy head coach Frank Andrea. Though the Warriors had a solid outing in 2014, there was one key element left to be desired: making the FHSAA State Playoffs. Coach Andrea is confident that this year’s Warriors can accomplish that goal. Andrea is confident that this year’s Warriors can accomplish that goal. “We have a great community fan support behind us,” he said. “The administration here is committed to a winning program.” “We were primarily an air-raid team. Now,

we are looking to be more balanced.” That balance should not be hard to obtain; the Warriors will have tremendous help in their backfield in Tanner Korn. Last year, Korn led the team in rushing, finishing just over 700 total yards on the year. “We are returning a

great running attack, led by Tanner Korn,” Coach Andrea said. “He is being helped by an offensive line that averages out at around 240 pounds.” The team is returning eight starters; however, the defense has been depleted. Only two of the eight returning starters are

Toughness is a Way of Life The Christians finished an impressive 2014 season with an 8-4 record, including a perfect 5-0 standing in district play. They carried high hopes into the postseason, but were defeated in the second round by the Eagles of North Florida Christian School (Tallahassee, Fla.). “At the end of the day, we want to win,” said University Christian head coach David Penland. “We have to learn to finish. Our players are motivated; they do not like to lose.” The Christians are returning 14 starters;

seven on each side of the ball. “The key factor is tougness,” Coach Penland said. “We teach our players to be tough, both physically and mentally. We tell them to leave everything on the field.” The team appears

to be more than ready to build on their 2014 campaign, and Coach Penland has faith that this year’s team is more than capable of improving on the foundation laid a season ago. “We approach every game the same,” he said. “Our goals for this season are to win our district, win state, and become a family. I believe that this team is fully equipped and capable of doing all three.”

Eagles Learning New System Under Coach Stomps A winless 2014 season and only three seniors on the roster would normally seem like a program is heading in the wrong direction, but new head coach Jim Stomps has already begun changing the course before his team has even taken a competitive snap. With 20 years of coaching experience, including 11 as head coach in high schools throughout Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, and Oregon, Coach Stomps likes what he sees from his team thus

far. During summer 7-on-7 workouts, the Eagles have competed with schools ranging from 5A and 8A and even walked away with three wins at the “Throw Down in OTown” tournament.

and Faith Christian, who were the two best teams in the conference last year. Of note, the Eagles will be traveling to Orlando 3 weeks in a row, something that no other team in Northeast Florida has to overcome. Playing on the road is difficult, but for most schools that means a short bus trip over to a cross-town rival. Coach Stomps will bring an up-tempo

style offense that includes spreading out the opponent while operating within the no huddle. Senior captain Cole Berger will lead the offense from the backfield as well as the defense from the middle. In 2014, Berger was the leading rusher, near the top in tackles, and led in punting average. Look for this ironman senior to continue his production in 2015.

Are You On The Ball For Fall? Gearing Up For Fall Sports

More than 140,000 high school athletes get a concussion each year in the U.S. – but you can head off the risk by following some simple guidelines. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) offers these tips:

As the summer winds down and youth athletes are getting ready to head back to school, so begins the season of fall sports, and the conditioning that goes along with them. But no matter if you’ve been out there all summer preparing or are just getting ready to start, experts say that it’s important to take the proper steps and precautions to stay healthy, fit and safe during training. Any conditioning program that occurs outdoors during the hot months in North Florida comes with its share of heat. Avoiding the pitfalls that working out in high temperatures brings requires awareness of the importance of proper hydration, and the signs and symptoms of heat stroke. Even workouts scheduled in the cooler early morning hours don’t offer enough protection if an athlete is not properly hydrated. “Heat stroke can happen even when it’s cooler outside if kids have been going through a rigorous exercise

program and are not properly hydrated,” said Robert Sefcik, ATC, LAT, executive director of the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program. “If you’re not taking in increased amounts of fluids and you’re working out in extreme heat over several days, you are now predisposed to dehydration.” The body cools itself by the evaporation of perspiration. On really humid days when moisture isn’t being reabsorbed into the atmosphere, the ability to cool down is drastically reduced. Add to that a shortage of the fluids in the body that aid in perspiration, and you’ve got a perfect storm for heat stroke. “The scary part is that it doesn’t always follow a normal pattern of progression – cramping, exhaustion, dizziness – sometimes it just comes on. When the body’s thermal regulatory system overloads, it can go from bad to emergency very quickly.” Because athletes are most vulnerable to heat

stresses during the first two weeks of practice, the Florida High School Athletic Association has a policy for all high and middle school coaches to follow that gets athletes used to the heat and increased exertion required in training. This acclimatization process involves a gradual increase in demand as the workouts progress, as well as allowing for the necessary time for rest, recovery and rehydration. This policy has drastically reduced the number of heatrelated injuries in schools but because it doesn’t extend to private sports clubs, parents need to be vigilant of the dangers of the heat and keep a watchful eye on their athletes. Sefcik recommends drinking 17-to-20 ounces of water or sports drink 2-to-3 hours before activity, and an additional 7-to-10 ounces within 10-to-20 minutes before practice. Access to cold water or sports drinks throughout the practice session is a must, with fluid breaks every 15-to-

• Always play by the rules – Follow the safety rules as well as the rules of the sport. • Use the right protective equipment – Your gear should be fitted and maintained properly so it can protect you the way it was designed. • Practice good sportsmanship – Unnecessary aggression on the field of play is the cause of many preventable injuries. • Know when it’s safe to return to play – If you have received a concussion, you must get it checked out and monitored by a physician, and may not return to play until you receive written medical clearance.

25 minutes. Finally, an area should be set aside with slush buckets, towels and even a kiddie pool for submersion in the event that heat stroke does occur. “The current treatment protocol is immediate rapid cooling,” he said. “Getting the core temperature down as soon as possible is the most urgent goal.” Another important goal is concussion prevention, which is a year-round endeavor. One of the most important things a student athlete can do is to protect his or her brain. “Each athlete needs to be treated individually and with any suspected head injury; this requires immediate removal from the practice field or game immediately, and

no return to play without evaluation and clearance from a doctor,” Sefcik said. Sefcik added that parents should always be conscious of what kind of health care supervision is associated with any school or sports club their kids are participating in. Make sure coaches are trained to administer CPR and basic first aid, if an automated external defibrillator (AED) is present and easily accessible, and if there’s a licensed athletic trainer overseeing the medical care of the athletes. No matter what sport you play, don’t let the bad outweigh the good – make sure you prepare for workouts in the heat by staying hydrated, and know the warning signs of heat stroke and concussion. Keep it cool!

Wisdom Teeth Removal

{

At North Florida Oral & Facial Surgery, we provide wisdom teeth extractions for patients who come to us with both routine and complicated cases. As surgical specialists, with advanced training and certification / licensure in intravenous (I.V.) sedation and general anesthesia, we are able to offer solutions and options that may not be available at your family dentist’s office. If you still have your wisdom teeth, and they are causing you any issues, or your dentist recommends removal, here are some things that are helpful for you to know:

What are wisdom teeth and how did they get their name? Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that develop in your jaws, after the “6-year” and “12-year” molars. Third molars are commonly referred to as “wisdom teeth” and do not fully develop until the dental arches become longer during adolescence and young adulthood, typically between the ages of 1520. This approximate age range is sometimes referred to as the “age of wisdom”, thus the origin of the term “wisdom teeth”.

When is the best age to remove wisdom teeth? The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) recommends timely removal of indicated wisdom teeth between the ages of 15 and 25. Post-surgical healing and recovery from swelling and discomfort takes place much more quickly in this age group, and the complication rate is considerably less. So, even though your wisdom teeth may not be causing you pain, it may be prudent to consider having them removed during this age range to avoid the increased risks associated with removal later in life.

Why should wisdom teeth be removed? Why remove them if they’re not bothering me? According to the AAOMS, an estimated 85% of wisdom teeth will eventually require removal due to symptoms of pain and / or associated pathology (e.g. - tooth decay, infections, cysts, benign tumors). Furthermore, in the majority of patients, there is not enough room in the jaws for these teeth to fully erupt into normal position, and these wisdom teeth are “impacted” within the gum tissue or jaw bone. Impacted wisdom teeth are more likely to eventually be associated with pain, infection, and other dental disease processes. Early removal of these wisdom teeth, before they cause some

Please feel free to visit our website for information about our practice: www.nfofs.com of the problems listed above, is beneficial in most patients.

What are my anesthesia choices? Most patients who undergo wisdom teeth removal in our offices wish to be unaware of the procedure while it is taking place and choose to be “asleep” during their surgery. Routine dental extractions are often done with just local anesthesia (“numbing injections”) along with nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”). Impacted wisdom teeth, however, require a more extensive type of surgical procedure that the majority of our patients prefer to not consciously experience. Being asleep under I.V. sedation or general anesthesia allows the patient to be completely relaxed and comfortable during the surgery and to awaken with little or no memory of any part of the procedure. All of our surgeons are Board Certified, have undergone extensive specialized training in anesthesia, and are specifically licensed and certified to safely provide I.V. sedation or general anesthesia to our patients who desire to be totally relaxed and unaware during their surgery.

What can I eat? During the first few hours after your surgery, it is important to concentrate on rehydrating with clear liquids (e.g. water, Gatorade). A soft diet is recommended (mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, macaroni & cheese, etc.) for the first couple days after your surgery; avoid foods that require significant amounts of chewing. You can advance your diet as tolerated, and most patients return to eating normal foods after a few days.

When can I return to school / work / sports? Recovery from wisdom tooth surgery varies depending on your age, health status, and complexity of the procedure. We recommend taking at least two or three days off after your surgery prior to attempting to return to work or school. If you are an athlete, you should resume training intensity very gradually; make sure you are well hydrated, well nourished, and no longer taking any prescription pain medication.

This year’s campaign may prove to be a bit more of a challenge, as many of the team’s weapons have moved on after graduation. Leading receiver Billy Sellinger will look to take command of the offense, as he will be expected to handle duties at quarterback throughout the year as well. “Our leading statistical

players were seniors,” said Spartans head coach Todd Zehner. “We will have lots of question marks. But our kids are willing to work…We have a young, energetic group.” A 17-15 loss to the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind (St. Augustine, Fla.) was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect season for the Spartans. The team looks to continue their winning ways as they take to the road for their first game against Munroe (Quincy, Fla.) on Sept. 4.
