Health & Fitness Recovery Options for Competitive Athletes 32 Understanding and Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death in Children and Adolescents 92
FROM THE PUBLISHER It is officially August and officially our favorite month here at In the Game. School is back in session, and football season is finally back! Our annual football preseason issue offers previews of high schools across all of Northeast Florida. Small, large, public, private, and everything in between. It also highlights college football and our own Jacksonville Jaguars. Each preview is a combination of coach interviews, stats, schedules, and expert analysis on the upcoming 2018-19 season. We also highlight some of the top football players across Northeast Florida. Each athlete profiled is one to look out for this season. Last year Raines knocked out the competition to take the 2A state title, becoming the second public school in Duval County
history to do so. Can Coach Deran Wiley and his team recreate that magic this year? St. John’s Country Day, who had one win last year, brought on Derek Chipoletti as head coach. Chipoletti, who previously coached at Bradford, Oakleaf, and Williston, looks to reinvigorate the program. As always, Bolles and Trinity Christian look to be stiff competition with returning players from last season and with new talent making their debuts. Whatever the outcome is, there is no doubt that this season will be one for the books. Here at In the Game, we never cease to be amazed by the community we cover and their inspiring stories. We continue to come across athletes that really hone in on what living life In the Game means: living each day with passion, determination, and positivity. If you know of any athlete, coach, or program that embodies this spirit, head to our website to nominate a story idea. As always, we thank you for your continued support of In the Game and your local athletic programs. To make sure you never miss a chance to stay In the Game, follow us on social media @itgnext and check out itgnext.com.
If you’re in search of great stories, we have the answer. itgnext.com features apparel, stories from the magazine, and much more all at your finger tips. There is even a spot to submit your ideas to us.

WE’RE
CHANGING THE GAME. At the Y, we’re so much more than just a place to exercise. We give teens a safe place to hang out after school, get together on the court, cool off in our swimming pools, form friendships in our sports leagues, and discover and develop who they are through volunteering and giving back, and in youth leadership programs like Teen Forward, Youth In Government, and mentorship programs. When it comes to “gym and swim,” we’re changing the game—and our goals are always within reach.

Founder Mark Dykes is the entrepreneur and mastermind behind the In the Game vision. Back in 2007, Mark set out to create a company that captured the passion, intensity, and unrivalled commitment toward high school athletics in the South Georgia area. Today, that vision has become a reality, and he continues to be the leading influence in what lies ahead for ITG Next, despite his annual prediction that UGA will win the national championship.
As a Pine Mountain, Georgia, native, Mandy’s move to Valdosta has brought enhanced artistry and intricacy to the ITG design team. The University of West Georgia alum graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in art with a concentration in graphic design. Her artistic nature has allowed her to use graphic design to win national and international design competitions, all of which are meant to serve as diversions and coping mechanisms for Alabama’s loss against Auburn.
After four years as an interdisciplinary studies major at Valdosta State University and nearly two years as an ITG intern, Anna has remained a member of the team as an editor. Since her start in early 2016, she has devoted her editorial eye toward serving as one of the first and last lines of defense against errors within these pages. More importantly, while her Facebook page says that she likes the Saints, there is fortunately no other sign of such irrational fandom.

Susannah Parmenter is a Florida transplant originally from California. After graduating from California State University, Fullerton with a broadcast journalism degree, she continued her education with a meteorology degree from Florida State. Now, as part of In the Game, she combines her journalism and broadcast skills to highlight the athletes who inspire and motivate us to release our “inner champions.”
A native of Charleston, South Carolina, and a student-athlete at Flagler College, Mary Catherine aspires to bring her passions for sports and journalism into one dream. After making leaps and bounds playing soccer at the collegiate level, she hopes to use this unique background in her evolving work as an ITG intern.
After graduating from Michigan State University, Jeff Elliott worked at the Big Ten Conference office for 20 years, the last 17 years as the director of public relations. He moved to Jacksonville in 1990 and became editor of Jacksonville Sport magazine for four years and then was a sports writer and TV columnist for the Times-Union for 14 years. He is currently a correspondent with the Associated Press covering all Jaguars and Florida Gators home football games.

Bobby Hessler is a Jacksonville based director, cinematographer, and editor. He has a wide range of experience from working on feature film sets, to directing commercials for television, to writing and producing short films. His passion for film inspires a focus on visual storytelling as a craft. Along with his work at In the Game, Bobby operates a freelance video production company and is graduating from UNF in December with a degree in multimedia production.
Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, Gerald is now a mass media major at Valdosta State University. He started working for In the Game in the Spring of 2018 to offer his writing flair and to generate exciting sports content. Gerald enjoys the writing aspect of mass media, whether it be journalism or screenwriting. He is always looking to grow and improve his craft. Gerald has grown to rely on the future, as his favorite team, the Atlanta Falcons, disappoints him every season.
Joshua was born and raised in Gwinnet County and joined ITG in the fall of 2017. Currently a junior mass media major at Valdosta State, Joshua is aiming toward a career as a sports television personality. Although he’s still learning new techniques in sports journalism, his admiration and knowledge of a variety of sports is easily recognized. As a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan, he has learned to remain optimistic towards his goals despite the inevitable obstacles in the way.

Recovery Options for Competitive Athletes Whether you are a golfer or a runner, cheerleader or ball player, the risk of injury is always present. From practices through game days, recovery should be an essential part of exercise and practice routines. Most athletes recognize that caring for their body doesn’t end when the game or practice is over. The care athletes give their bodies in the hour or two after exercise determines how successfully their bodies recover in time for their next physical activity. Beneficial recovery activities include but are not limited to stretching, active recovery, massage therapy, hydrotherapy, hydration, and nutrition. Stretching should be a staple in any ath32 | itgnext.com
lete’s training and competition regimens. Stretching allows improved range of motion compared with those who may not consider stretching routinely. In addition, consistent stretching routines can prevent sore muscles, stiffness, cramps, and prevent muscle strains that can occur if muscles are stiff. Active recovery consists of low intensity exercises that increase blood flow and clear toxins associated with fatigue. For example, if you decide to play pickup basketball with friends for an hour, an extra 15 minutes shooting jump shots afterward can be the difference between a loose back and a stiff wake-up call
the next morning. Massage therapy uses direct skin contact to loosen muscle tissues and circulate blood through the affected muscles, improving blood flow, flushing toxins, and reducing inflammation. Hydrotherapy is the use of water as a treatment to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, improve immune function, and decrease muscle soreness. Examples of this treatment include ice baths, steam rooms, and whirlpools. All three of the aforementioned treatments help with blood flow and muscle temperature, both important components of muscle soreness relief. Hydration is not as simple as most believe it to be once one be-
gins engaging in physical activity. While water in its pure form is the best form of hydration, drinks that provide the individuals with electrolytes during intense activity is also vital to their performance. In addition to eliminating the general feeling of exhaustion that accompanies lack of hydration, it is important to restore the electrolytes and minerals lost in sweat during physical activity. Physical and mental strength are both improved with proper hydrating, and the likelihood of muscle cramps is reduced. Carbs and protein are
strong components of muscle fiber recovery, providing fuel for the nervous system and muscles while also preventing protein from being used as an energy source. Consuming adequate numbers of carbs and protein through dietary intake allows the protein to achieve its main goal: repairing muscles and restoring energy. All of these methods can be implemented into an athlete’s workout regimen. It is imperative that some of these methods be used to ensure the body heals from the inside and out.

Coming off back-to-back two-win seasons hasn’t done anything to dampen the spirits and enthusiasm of Deland head coach Steve Allen. Entering his second season as head man of the Bulldogs, he is as confident sounding as any head coach around Northeast Florida. Of course, having eight returning starters on your defense and five on offense can do a lot for you and your team’s confidence moving forward. Returning this season are players in key positions, including starting quarterback/wide receiver Leon Rolle. He’ll be joined in the backfield with running back Demaurez Bellamy. Paving the way on the offensive line is returning lineman Jason Murphy. On defense, linebacker Ian Schoenwetter returns to plug the middle, and behind him in the defensive secondary will be Avantae Williams. The resurgent Bulldogs will open the season at home as they host the Mainland Buccaneers.

Patience — it’s not a word that coach Adam Geis and the Mighty Saints of Sandalwood High School football are accustomed to. After last year’s team finished 6-5 with eight sophomores starting, it was just something Geis and his staff had to learn to deal with. That patience could very well pay off this season, with eight starters on both sides of the ball returning. Leading the Saints this year will be returning defensive backs Antonio Clary and Adam Burns, along with defensive tackle Clarence Perrier. Geis expects his team’s strength to be the defense, especially up front. He also expects his offense to make big plays in 2018. This balance should make Sandalwood a playoff-caliber team in 2018. The Saints will open the 2018 regular season at Ribault High School.

Mustangs Mandarin Mustangs Coach Expects Good Season
SCHEDULE

Mandarin Stadium
Written by: Phil Jones After several years of success as head coach at Yulee, Bobby Ramsay was hired before last season to take over the Mustangs. Opponents of Mandarin High didn’t exactly roll out the welcome mat for Ramsay and his staff, as Mandarin finished 2-8 overall. However, with several starters coming back in 2018, including a handful of senior contributors, the Mustangs have a great shot of turning things around this season. Ramsay will welcome back eight starters on offense and seven on defense. Senior offensive linemen Zack Mills and Parker Merrill will give Mandarin experience and size up front. They’ll look to open the way for senior running back Tyrell Jennings. Another senior duo will line up as wideouts: Chris Mitchell and Demario Douglas. The quarterback will be a firsttime starter, junior Carson Beck. The defense will be led by senior defensive linemen Nick Harris, Christian Warren, and Michael Shimko. Senior defensive back Kasimir Absolu and junior linebacker Travis Moss are back. With the large number of seniors on the roster, Ramsay expects good things from his team in 2018. “I expect to see tremendous improvement this year,” he said. “We’re very talented on both sides of the ball, and we have a lot of senior leadership to guide us in 2018. We’re right on the verge of taking that next step, and I think this group can do it.” Mandarin will travel to take on Atlantic Coast to open the season.

A team looking for consistency, Atlantic Coast High School is poised to finally find stability and just maybe a winning season. In just his second year, head coach Jimmy Hill has worked hard to first and foremost keep players at Atlantic Coast instead of transferring. According to Hill, that was an issue when he first took over. Heading into the 2018 season, he and the Stingrays have some talent to build on. Atlantic Coast returns almost half of the starters from last year, according to Hill, and there is some big-time talent included in that group. A couple of massive offensive linemen the Stingrays hope will provide pass protection and run blocking this season are Kingsley Eguakun, a six-foot-three, 300-pound senior, and six-foot-three, 285-pound Nathan Brady. Eguakun committed to the University of Miami Hurricanes, while Brady is looking at several schools, including Valdosta State and Central Arkansas. Wide receiver Patrick Bryant, only a sophomore, is getting a lot of attention, including an offer already from Miami. Athlete Demetrius Byrd will be counted on to help all over the field. He is one of the fastest players around and will play offense, defense, and special teams for the Stingrays. In addition to the returning contributors, the ‘Rays will have a transfer at quarterback this season in Daniel “Bubba” Wohlgemuth. He comes to Atlantic Coast from Fletcher High School. Hill expects the Stingrays to show “significant improvement” in 2018, but not just because of the obvious talent that will take the field this year. The coach from Detroit said the team chemistry is “100 percent better” than last year, and that will be the difference in Atlantic Coast finding that winning formula on the field. The Stingrays open the season with a home game versus Mandarin. Points Allowed: 433 Points Scored: 188

After a 7-4 season in 2016 that ended with a loss in the second round of playoffs, the Tigers of head coach Brian Allen were poised to build on that momentum headed into last year. But after a 7-2 start, Columbia dropped two heartbreaking overtime losses to once again end their season a bit too early. Heading into 2018, can the Tigers avoid those late season pitfalls and advance to contend for a state championship? They’ll certainly have some firepower in 13 return starters – eight on defense and five on offense. That includes quarterback Jordan Smith and three of his wide receivers in T.J. Jones, Marquez Bell, and Bobby Fulton. Two linebackers, Ethan Umstead and Jaylen Brown, and two cornerbacks, Derek Johnson and Devin Johnson, return this year. Count a pair of safeties, Ahmad Williams and Brandon Scott, as impact players Allen will look forward to this year. It’s no surprise that the head coach is excited about the talented group he has in Lake City this year. “I’m very excited and optimistic about this group and the upcoming season,” Allen said. “If these kids can stay healthy and humbled, they have a chance to make a run.” Columbia begins the 2018 season with a road contest at Gainesville.

Entering his 21st year as head coach at First Atlantic, Marty Lee has seen it all — the good teams and the bad ones. That’s why when Lee says he is excited about the Buccaneers team that will take the field this season, fans should also be excited. Coming off a 4-6 record and no playoff appearance last year, the Buccaneers will have quite a few solid returners from last season. That includes seven on offense and seven on defense. Among those expected to make an impact this year are linebackers Cole Beckham and Malik Marshall. They’ll have defensive backs Gelique Williams and Davon Davis playing behind them in the Bucs secondary. On offense, look for a trio of receivers to lead the way this season. That’s junior wideouts Tyree Saunders and Jaylen Fowler and senior Darius Lewis. If there is any uncertainty surrounding the Bucs’ optimism heading into this season, it’s the quarterback situation. According to Lee, no one has really stepped up to claim the job just yet, so there could be a “quarterback- by-committee” approach heading into the first week. Despite this, Lee expects to have a talented team that should compete for a district championship. “We have some really talented team coming back, including our entire offensive line,” Lee said. “Expectations are high, and the kids are working hard to meet those expectations. I think we’ll be good to go.” The Buccaneers will kick 2017 Overall 2017 Region off the 2018 season with a home matchup against Terry Record Record Parker High School.

The Fletcher Senators rebounded from a slow start last year to finish 7-4, including a 2-2 district record and a trip to the playoffs. In the 2017 state playoffs, Fletcher’s season came to an abrupt end with a 34-14 loss to Mandarin. Looking ahead, head coach Kevin Brown will return seven defensive starters, including several big time play makers. Safety Jeremiah Payton leads the way, with Jalen Mitchell joining him in the defensive backfield. The defensive line will be anchored by defensive ends Hunter May and D,J. Bennett. Nick Lavender will play a hybrid role at linebacker and defensive end. The offense will have quarterback Devon Lingle returning as a fulltime starter in 2018, and according to Brown, he will have a big, athletic offensive line protecting him in 2018. Brown also likes the speed his team is showing in spring and summer conditioning events. “We are fast and strong overall as a team, and I especially like our experience on defense,” Brown said. “We’ll need all those things if we’re going to keep getting better this season.” Fletcher will host Bishop Kenny to open the 2018 season.

The Lee Generals of coach O.J. Small are coming off a successful 2017 season that saw them go undefeated in District 2-7A. That was part of an overall 10-win season that saw Lee lose only 3 games all year long. One of those loses was a regional quarterfinal against Fleming Island 31-26. Now the expectations will be high for Small and the Generals heading into 2018, and with some key pieces returning this season, they may just meet those expectations. Lee returns six starters on offense and five on defense. That includes athlete Tahveon Micholson, who will see action at defensive back and receiver. Joining him will be returning starters Kevonte Doles and Jurial Caldwell. Small and the Generals will also welcome Terry Parker transfer Cameron Sapp to the team. Small said his team has “good speed” and said fans should expect the Generals to be “very aggressive and physical” this upcoming season. Lee will open the regular season at Raines High School.

With years of experience comes wisdom, which comes in handy when leading the Bears to the championship playoff game for the 2017 season. Coach Darrell Sutherland has used his 18 years of experience to teach his players to live in each moment. “The biggest thing I learned from last year is enjoy every moment that we’re together as a football program,” Sutherland said. “Last year we were blessed. We got to play all the way through the state championship game. The bond of the group and the special young men affected me as a coach, and I wanted to make sure I cherish every moment we’re together in the week.” Sutherland believes the example set by last year’s senior class stuck with this season’s seniors. “This group really cares about each other, and I found that something we saw in last year’s senior class,” he said. “They saw that group constantly deflect praise to one another, and I think this group can model that. They want success for each other, so that culture, that chemistry, is going to be really important.” The Bears’ identity this season will be defined by tenacity and determination. “I think that this team is a very gritty team,” he said. “I think this group responds well to it. They’re going to be a physical and gritty group.” Points Allowed: 359 Points Scored: 617

With a losing reputation that has stuck with the Knights since 2014, last season was monumental for the team with coach Sean McIntrye at the helm. Some could say the Knights have their mojo back, ending last season with a 5-6 record. Although they still have a long way to go before making playoffs, the team has made leaps and bounds in a surprisingly short amount of time. One of the team’s greatest strengths is their ability to be accountable to one another. “Our kids care about one another, and they hold that in high regard; no kid is going to let another kid down,” McIntrye said. “That gives us an opportunity to play as hard as we can every single snap.” Although the Knights had an uncharacteristically good season, McIntyre stressed that there is still work to be done on both sides of the ball. “On defense we missed close to 20 tackles a game last year,” he said. “When we tackled the football, teams did not move the ball successfully against us, but when we did not tackle the football, teams moved the ball at will on us.” McIntyre added that if the team is going to keep rising in the ranks, they must be completely invested in the program. “Every kid has to work at the highest intensity in order to reach the peak of their development, and for us to be a great football team, all of our kids have to be developed at the highest level from a fundamental, physical, leadership, and social standpoint,” McIntyre said.

SCHEDULE
Coach Damenyum Springs’ 2017 team finished 11-3 after going to the third round of the playoffs. They lost twice to Bartram Trail during the regular season and playoffs. This year’s team has enough talent to make another challenge for the District 3-7A title. Still, it will be hard to replace defensive stalwart/punter Ryan Smenda, a state wrestling champion, model student, one of the best players in Golden Eagle history, and the ITG Next 2018 Male Athlete of the Year. Only two starters — Eugene Oglesby and Jake Lebretto — return on a defense that allowed opponents to score 13 points or less nine times last season. Springs said he was shocked at how well the defense played in the spring game after losing nine starters. He said some of the defensive players to watch are Zach Payne, Andrew Thomas, Jaelin Blount, Jacob Ashe, Glenn Rodgers, Jeremiah Jackson, Brian Maddox, Gabriel Petit-Homme, Gavin Cisneros, and Landon Perry. Offensive players who could make an impact this year are quarterback Dean Hyams; running back Dewayne McBride; tight end Sam Synder; fullback Max Micheals; offensive linemen Jackson Peery, Frank Rooney, Thomas Waters, Cody Carmon, Evan Sheets, and Bennett Cory; slot Aaron Ramirez; receiver Jared Ashe; and kickers Avery Coussens and Zach Fletcher. Springs said he is pleased with the direction the program is going. He added new defensive coordinator Kyle Kennard, offensive line coach Justin Reagan, receivers coach JJ Ashton, and offensive coordinator Ryan Wolfe. The schedule is typically strong with the likes of Sandalwood, Clay, Middleburg, and Ed White in non-district play. Springs and his staff deserve a lot of credit for keeping Fleming Island’s playoff run record intact.

Coach Frank Garis, in his first year as the Oakleaf coach, inherits a 2-8 team that lost four games last season by a total of 17 points. Garis is a well respected coach who gained valuable experience with Josh Hoekstra at Clay, Matt Toblin at Ponte Vedra, and the late Craig Howard, who coached Tim Tebow at Nease. He has some college prospects at running back, on offensive line, and at linebacker that could help him rebuild the team this season. Five starters return on offense. Walter Simmons and Ty Petty are battling for the quarterback job. The running backs are lead by heralded senior Keshawn King, who ran for a school record 1,351 yards last season, and sophomore Kevin Davis, who Garis described as a smaller version of Mike Tyson. One member of the offensive line, junior Jalen Rivers (6-foot-6, 325 pounds), is already a four-star prospect. Tight end Xander Warner has proven his leadership ability on and off the field. Five starters return on a defense led by senior middle linebacker Dexter Moore. Garis also mentioned Jamaric Bonner, who plays on both sides and is another important team leader. Garis wants his team to be prepared for the district play, so he has scheduled a gauntlet of Raines, Trinity Christian, Clay, Vanguard (Ocala), and Glades Central on Labor Day weekend.

Written by: Brent Beaird Few teams in the Clay County area went through the difficulties that coach Karl Smeltzer’s Middleburg Bronco team did last year. Smeltzer said 31 of 40 players missed at least one game last year due to injury. Conversely, last year’s misfortune means plenty of experience for the returning players. Three starters return on an offense led by junior quarterback Joe Justino, who is the son of current Bronco assistant Rob Justino. Smeltzer said Justino has a high quarterback IQ and spent a lot of time in camps during the offseason. The strength of the offense is the line. Due to injuries and hurricane related difficulties last season, 13 different offensive linemen played. Some names to look for are Richard Cole LeClair, Colby Warner, Nate Rance, Jesse Saunders, and Brandon Holder. Tyler Bryant is a weapon as a fullback and a defensive end at 215 pounds. Sophomore Jay Lane has showed promise at running back and receiver. Two starters return on defense. Players to watch for are Dylan Keller, Brody Senn, and Noah Janda. Tyler Bryant will play tailback and outside linebacker. Smeltzer welcomes the opportunity to have several former head coaches on his staff such as Frank Hall, Kyle Rice, Alan Burnsed, and Justino. The Broncos are in a tough District 4-6A with St. Augustine, Ed White, Nease, and Englewood. Middleburg made the playoffs as a district runner-up two seasons ago. Bronco players and coaches are hoping fewer injuries this year contributes to another postseason run.

The Yellow Jackets are on a roller coaster that only seems to be going up. Coach Brian Braddock has made his second year as head coach more memorable than his first. The Yellow Jackets played their way to the state semifinals last year, making it further than they did Braddock’s first year on the job. With core athletes like Cornelius Stewart and Thomas Marrero, the Yellow Jackets are looking to take the season to the state championship. “My expectations are we prepare for every game, (and) we earn the right to feel like we can go out and win,” Braddock said. “If we are preparing to take the field, preparing to win, the rest will take care of itself, and we will be successful.” Although the team is on the road to a solid season, Braddock believes working with special teams will give them their best season yet. “We can do a lot better on special teams this year than we did last year,” he said. “We have a different team this year. We have to win our special teams battle if we want to be the best we can be.” Braddock trusts that their success this upcoming season will be from taking it day by day. “We have a lot of inexperienced kids and have a lot of work to do,” he said. “We truly have to keep the big picture in mind, and if we do that we’ll be fine. We have to get better each day.”

The Englewood High Rams will have a new head coach as they enter the 2018 season. JD Stalvey has been an assistant an Englewood for the last four years and will now get his shot as the head man. The head coach position was not the only change made over the off season, as only four assistant coaches (including Stalvey) will be back. Along with the returning coaches are five offensive starters and four on defense. Players to watch this year are tight end Kalani Soule, running back/linebacker Jordan Mitchell, linebacker/defensive lineman Antonio Riley, wide receiver/punter Ian Switzer, and wide receiver Edward Holmes. Englewood finished last season with a 3-9 mark, but according to Stalvey, the team is looking for a new identity. “We’ve been working hard every day to change the identity of our football team from last year,” he said. “We want to work with the guys who love being a Ram.” Asked what his team’s strength will be in 2018, Stalvey said, “(We) want to be able to run the football effectively and play solid defense.” The Rams will begin the season with their new head coach and new identity as they host Paxon High.

With their first game against rival Ponte Vedra, the Panthers have their season cut out for them. After losing to the Sharks and finishing the season 5-5, the Panthers are still climbing a ladder they started two seasons ago when they hit an abysmal record of 2-7. That is not to say that there is not hope with names like quarterback Preston Staples and wide receiver and strong safety Nic Bunkosky. Coach Tim Krause believes the grit they need to succeed lies within the bond of the team. “I think we’re going to be a team that plays really hard for each other,” Krause said. “Our kids want to make our mark, our identity. They really care about each other, play hard for each other, and are going to be a really gritty, scrappy team. We’ve got the group and the culture this year to be able to do that. We always tell our kids that when people turn our film on, that that’s what we want them to see: a team that’s really going to fight and play as hard as they can for each other.” Although the Panthers faced a multitude of obstacles in the 2017 season, including playing without a true quarterback for several games, it has taught them to be develop a tough mentality. “I think our kids really fought through it, and I think what we learned is that the group we have coming back this year are really resilient kids, are really tough kids, play really hard through adversity,” Krause said. “That’s one of the things we’re really excited about.”

The Commanders of Ed White High School are looking to rebound from a 3-7 season in 2017, and with several starters returning this season, they should be in pretty good shape. According to head coach Kevin Sullivan, the offense will have eight starters returning, with seven on the defensive side of the ball also. Among the contributors this season will be highly-recruited linebacker Omari Fiffer, a three-year starter who has led the team in tackles the last two years. Fiffer is mulling offers from several schools including Syracuse, South Alabama, UCF, Troy, and South Florida. Offensively, the Commanders will rely on Isaiah Flowers, an explosive running back with excellent speed, vision, and toughness. Flowers is comfortable in Sullivan’s offense as a starter over the last two years on that side of the ball. Sullivan said the Commanders should finally be physically strong enough and ready for one of the state’s most challenging schedules in 2018. “This will be year three of the Commander Rebuild,” he said. “We have a veteran group of players on both sides of the ball.” White opens the season at home against the Westside Wolverines.

The Matanzas Pirates battled their way to the first round of playoffs in the 2017 season under coach Robert Ripley. The 2018 season brought many changes among the coaching staff, including the head coaching position. Don Mathews takes the helm and intends to make this season the best the Pirates have seen in years. Mathews plans to utilize the seven returning starters to make an early impact in the district. Players like Branden Gilyard, Seaton Waldhauer, and Josef Powell will be key players in bringing success to the team. He plans to put an emphasis on the offensive line. “We have a couple of guys who are coming off injury and have been rehabbing over the summer,” Mathews said. “When we get those guys back, we should be pretty good up front.” The strength on offense will help the Pirates in big games with rival teams like the Flagler Bulldogs, who they lost to last season. Mathews believes one of the most important concepts to focus on this upcoming season is discovering their identity as having a “blue collar work ethic” and being “a team that continues to fight until the final whistle.” Mathews is expecting big things from his team this year and defines success as being about more than statistics. “Are we getting better each game?” he said. “Forget the scoreboard and forget the record. When we watch film, do we see improvements?”

Jaguars The Jacksonville Jaguars made one of the biggest turnarounds in 2017, going 10-6 following a 3-13 2016 campaign. The team returned to the playoffs for the first time since the 2007 NFL season. The Jags ended the 2016 season with zero pro-bowlers and had one of the worst records in the league. Interim head coach Doug Marrone was given the keys after the Jags let go of head coach Gus Bradley. In the following offseason, the Jaguars invested their fourth overall draft pick on running back Leonard Fournette. Fournette rushed for 1,040 yards and nine touchdowns in his rookie campaign. Blake Bortles was a game manager and could keep the games within reach, despite not being good on paper. The Jaguars had the No. 2 defense in 2017, backed by cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey and A.J. Bouye along with defensive end Calais Campbell, and reached the AFC Divisional Round, losing 24-20 to the New England Patriots. The hunger of this young Jaguars team was evident. The had six pro-bowlers in the 2017 season. The team lost two of their top receivers, Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, but re-signed Marquise Lee to a three-year contract in hopes of him stepping up to be that first option. Their defense is still intact, and they will be looking to wreak the same havoc they did a season ago. The Jaguars are slated to continue making improvements to make a Super Bowl run in the upcoming 2018 season.

Falcons
With Super Bowl 53 being played at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, the Falcons are hoping to become the first team to host the Super Bowl. Coming off their Super Bowl 51 meltdown, we saw the Falcons take a step back. The team went 10-6 and grabbed the final NFC playoff seed. We did not see the same high-powered offense in 2017 that got them to the Super Bowl in the previous season. This could be because of the difference of play-calling techniques between Kyle Shanahan and his successor, Steve Sarkisian. The Falcons’ season came to an end in the NFC Divisional Round against the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. With the loss of wide receiver Taylor Gabriel to the Chicago Bears, the Falcons invested their first-round pick on Alabama’s Calvin Ridley. He will most likely spend time as the third option behind Julio Jones and Mohammad Sanu. The Falcons focused on their defense in the draft, bringing in CB Isaiah Oliver, DT Deandrin Senat, and LB Foyesade Oluokun. The Falcons had the ninth ranked defense in 2017, fitting into the system of Dan Quinn, who coached the Seattle Seahawks’ “Legion of Boom.” The Atlanta Falcons should continue their success with their steady defensive improvements and attempt to get their offense back into rhythm if they expect to make another run at the Super Bowl.

The Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs took the season head-on and finished with an impressive record of 10-1, losing to the Boone High School Braves in the regional quarterfinals. The Bulldogs came out on top of their district undefeated. Coach Travis Roland is coming up on his eighth year as head coach and plans to make it even farther in the playoffs this year than last year. The Bulldogs destroyed their rival, the Matanzas High School Pirates, winning 35-14. Other competitive games for the Bulldogs included the Spruce Creek Hawks and the Mandarin Mustangs, who they beat in double overtime. The Bulldogs are made of 86 players; 23 of them are seniors who are looking to make this season the best of their high school careers and intend to lead the team to a district championship.

There’s no place like home. That’s the sentiment of new Palatka High School head football coach Willie Fells, a Palatka native who coached high school and college football away before return to take the reigns at his alma mater Fells was most recently defensive coordinator at Clay High School. Before that, he spent eight seasons coaching collegiately, also as a defensive coordinator. According to Fells, he is anxious to return Palatka to the type of football team that opponents dread playing on Friday nights. “Palatka was known for years as the team NOT to schedule for homecoming,” Fells said. “Everyone knew that this team (Panthers) had a reputation for being a rough bunch to line up against. I don’t know if that’s necessarily been the case over the past few years.” Fells will have to get the numbers up first, though. So far, he’s increased the number of players dressing out from around 27 in 2017 to 65 this year. Many of these players are new faces, as the Panthers have only three starters returning. Fells expects the team to be led by receiver Trayvon Williams and offensive linemen Jacob Burney and Clay Sipprell. Second Team All-State receiver Abrie Williams will return and give quarterback Mitchell McKinnon a nice target this season. Fells is excited to have K’Darious Poole as his starting safety and expects athlete Ke’Shawn Hughes to contribute all over the field at multiple positions. Fells will inherit a Palatka team that last had a winning record in 2013, when they finished 7-5. Last year’s team finished 3-8 overall and 1-4 in district play. According to Fells, he looks forward to the challenge of restoring that “Panther Pride” in Paltaka. “(We will play) a hard-nosed, physical style of football,” he said. “We must set goals and look to accomplish those goals each and every week. If we can do these things, then I believe we have the ability to get better.” The Panthers start the 2018 season with the kickoff classic at Liberty High School.

The Paxon High School Golden Eagles are looking to rebound from a 2-8 season in 2017 under sixth-year head coach Steve Brown. With eight returning starters on defense in 2018, there is reason to believe that a solid, experienced defense could be just what the program needs to rebound this upcoming year. The offense will have three starters back. Players that Brown and his staff will count on this year include linebackers Gabe Border and Mike Young and offensive lineman Jadon Pablo. Alex Dyer is another player that could help the young offense this season with his receiving skills, as both a wide receiver and tight end. Brown said his Golden Eagles offense is young but experienced. Several freshmen and sophomores have seen playing time already, so they should be comfortable in their roles this year. According to Brown, if the Eagles are to improve, they must cut down on the number of turnovers that plaqued them last season. “Our turnover margin was somewhere around -12 last year, Brown said. The first regular season contest for Paxon will be on the road against the Englewood Rams.

Trojans Ribault Looks to Replace Lots of Talent

SCHEDULE
The Trojans of Ribault High School are coming off back-toback district championships under head coach Kelvin Smith. After improving from 6-4 in 2016 to 7-3 last year, this upcoming season could be tough for Ribault to continue that trend. Smith and his staff lost 25 seniors to graduation, including several key contributors on both sides of the ball. That leaves only three returning starters on offense and defense, and according to Smith, Ribault will rely on several underclassmen this season. “We’re going to have to grow up in a hurry,” Smith said. “Of those 25 seniors we lost to graduation, 15-20 of them are playing college football somewhere this season. That’s tough to replace.” Among the losses are quarterback Jhamaal Marsh, who signed with Valdosta State University. Others now playing at the next level are safety Devon Matthews (Indiana) and Kenneth Channelle (North Dakota State). Ribault will open the season at home against Sandalwood.

After several disappointing seasons for Stanton fans, head coach Michael Healey has restored the faith at Stanton Prep. Behind a simplistic yet effective offensive scheme of running the football, Healey has Blue Devil fans thinking about a possible district championship heading into 2018. This didn’t seem possible when Healey first took over in 2015. He inherited a team that hadn’t won a game in over two seasons. Healey led Stanton to two wins in his first year, five wins the next year, and seven wins last year. As they turn their attention to the upcoming season, there’s reason to believe Stanton is ready to take that next big step of competing for a district championship. The Blue Devils finally have a D1 prospect in running back/linebacker Kerry Darelus, who will lead the effort this year. Another player to keep an eye on is Chris Jackson, a 6’3”, 340-pound offensive tackle. When asked about his team’s chances for that district championship, Healey said the Devils must beat the best to be the best. That means defeating Ribault and Yulee in 2018.

One of the area’s most dominant high school football programs is hoping a heap of returning talent from last year’s district championship, nine-win squad will give them a fifth state championship in the last six seasons. Trinity Christian hoped that fifth title would’ve come last year. If so, it would’ve put them in a class by themselves: There are a handful of teams tied with Trinity Christian for four straight, but none with five straight. A realignment of districts by the FHSSA put the Conquerors in Class 5A, a jump of two classes. The move from 3A to 5A made things a little tougher. Don’t expect anyone to feel sorry for Trinity Christian and head coach Verlon Dorminey. The Conquerors will have three of their high-octane offensive starters from last year back this season. Quarterback Austin Thomas is back after a season in which he threw for over 1,300 yards and 13 touchdowns. Joining him in the Trinity backfield will be running back Marcus Crowley, who rushed for 1,210 yards last year, averaging a shade over 100 yards rushing per game. The third playmaker returning will be receiver Isaiah Washington. Dorminey is also returning, but in a larger role: 2018 will mark his 28th season as head coach of Trinity Christian Academy Football. The Conquerors will open the season at home, taking on the Braden River Pirates.

Head Coach: Josh Burch Players To Watch
Josh Burch’s first year as head coach came up short with a 4-6 record, but was still filled with moments of poise and success. Yulee took on rival Fernandina Beach without fear, trampling them in a 28-0 win. Their other rival, West Nassau, had more luck and came on top with a 4-point lead over Yulee. After losing their starting quarterback, Brandon Kline, Burch is looking to fill the gaps in both the offensive and defensive lines. He believes that the players filling the shoes of previous starters will raise the level of competition within the team. Although Burch has helped in coaching the team in the past, his first year as head coach has been a learning curve. One of the most important lessons he learned was better preparing the team and developing a better understanding of the game. “We were plagued by misfortune all season long last year, and some of those were self-inflicted, and our team primarily needs to learn to take away that momentum from other teams and keep it,” Burch said. “One thing (we’ll do) in the spring, and we’ll do more in the fall, is give them more game scenarios in practice.” The Hornets’ maturity and varsity experience will give them the leadership they need to make it to the playoffs this upcoming season. “We have several players with two to three years of varsity experience,” Burch said. “I would say we have more depth at skilled positions than we’ve had in years past.” Burch believes that by taking advantage of their God-given potential, the team can reach a new level of success. “As a coach, I love to watch average and good players become great and exceptional players because of their work ethic,” he said. “If this team this year gives their best and leaves everything on the field, I know we’ll be successful.”

SCHEDULE
Bishop Kenny has made a name for themselves as one of North Florida’s top programs. Third-year head coach Bobby Raulerson has kept the Crusaders in the hunt for a district championship in his first two seasons, and this the team’s goal is another run at the playoffs. Despite losing 26 seniors, Raulerson will rely on three returning starters on offense and just two on defense. Raulerson and staff will have to lean on more reinforcements in 2018, including a host of returning seniors: wide receiver/defensive back Johnathon Jones, wide receiver/free safety Cade Sims, quarterback Tucker Talbott, wide receiver Caneim Maxwell, free safety/wide receiver Jaylon Bass, and linebacker Jordan Ellis. Three juniors who the Crusaders hope will make an impact are offensive/defensive linemen Cameron Moewe and Neil Politano and defensive back/running back Jordan Brown. “Despite losing those seniors, we have a group of talented and hard-working young men that just needs to get playing experience,” Raulerson said. “Developing depth along both lines of scrimmage and staying healthy will be key factors to our success this year.” The Crusaders open the 2018 regular season on the road at Fletcher.

Fans of Terry Parker football are hoping that the new season will bring, if nothing else, stability and put the Braves on their way to a winning atmosphere. The Braves kick off 2018 with new head coach Charron Dorsey, their third coach in as many seasons. Dorsey inherits a team that finished 2017 at 3-10 and 1-4 in district play. This was a step back from 2016, when the Braves won four games. Dorsey has installed a new system of discipline and accountability, both in the classroom and the playing field for his Braves team, and that should pay off with an improved product on Friday nights. As far as talent, Dorsey will have four returning starters on offense and five on defense to begin working with. Included in those returners are defensive back Joe Brown, linebacker Ahmad Moody, athlete Tyrone Williams, defensive back Larry Smith, and linebacker De’Drick Smith. According to Dorsey, the offensive and defensive lines will be the team’s strength this season. As far as expectations for 2018, Dorsey said he wants significant improvement in all areas and on all fronts. The Braves will open up the 2018 season at First Coast High School.

Although the Ponte Vedra Sharks didn’t annihilate their competition last year like they did in 2016 by only losing the championship by two points, they still managed to make an impression on the district. Coach Matt Toblin is at the helm prepping for his fifth year as head coach. He believes that there is always lessons to be learned from the previous season. “We play in an extremely competitive district and get another year to go against powerhouses like Bolles and Trinity,” Toblin said. “We need to keep trying to find ways to be competitive in the district. We feel we still have a chance to be in the conversation and do well enough to make our way into the playoffs.” Toblin believes that their strong defensive line will help the team accomplish what they almost had two years ago. “We have some returning starters on the defensive line and some kids that are ready to step in,” he said. Toblin preaches a “focus on yourself” mentality to his team when preparing for each game and practice. If the team can keep their minds focused on winning a championship and not on external factors, they will produce success. “We want to be the best version of ourselves,” Toblin said. “Our goal every year is to find a way to be special, and our definition of that is to maximize our God-given talents. We don’t talk about winning this or that; we want to find out how good can we possibly be. As long as we are shaping that, we will be successful.”

Twenty graduated seniors from last year’s team leaves coach Rodney DuBose with a young squad this season. Of the 10 starters returning, six are on offense, including two who will compete for the quarterback position: last year’s starter Jalil Jackson and D.J. Otis, who will challenge Jackson for the starting job. Jackson is more of a running quarterback, while Otis is a pocket passer. Also returning is running back Dalton Wilson and wide receivers Kenneth Davis and Javon Gantt. A 6-foot-4 senior, Gantt will be counted on to be a leader on and off the field for Westside in 2018. That’s important, according to DuBose, as last year’s 1-8 team lacked the type of leadership he expects from his Wolverine squad. Plus, with so much youth on the field this season, it will be critical for the upperclassmen to lead by example. Westside opens the 2018 campaign on the road against White High School.

Bolles Faces Questions Heading Into Belger’s Second Season

Written by: Phil Jones They say that baseball is a game of inches. Fans of the Bolles School football team can certainly argue that there were a few games when mere inches made the difference between winning and losing. That includes the first-round playoff game, where a field goal would’ve sent the ‘Dogs to the second round. Instead, it missed the upright by inches, and their season was over. As the Bulldogs prepare for the upcoming season, they are faced with more questions than answers, according to assistant coach Kevin Fagan. Fagan returns under head coach Wayne Belger, who assumed the job last year from long-time coach and Florida coaching legend Corky Rogers. Roger retired after a 45-year coaching career in the sunshine state. The Bolles School will welcome back standout wide out Chris Sanders; running backs Jayden McLeod and Wale Onasanya; and Army commit Pearson Toomey, who will line up at left tackle in 2018. The Bulldogs welcome back the speed of defensive back Bryson Kirksey, who is an All-State track athlete. Joining Kirksey in the defensive backfield are K.J. Fagan, who also serves as the team’s long-snapper, and safety C.J. Grimes. Stuffing the middle will be “mike” linebacker Kyle Coffindaffer. Former defensive lineman Simon Bracken moves to offense to play tight end this season. Fagan said he really isn’t sure what to expect from his team this year. There is still a four-way battle for the quarterback position, and, as always, Fagan said the Bolles schedule will be one of the toughest in the state. As one of the premiere programs in Northeast Florida, Bolles always finds a way to win games, and Belger and his coaching staff will find a way to get it done in 2018.

Baker County fans are eagerly anticipating the 2018 season, and why not? Their beloved Wildcats played for the first state title in 72 years of Baker County football, and head coach Jamie Rodgers has certainly got the program in a great place. There will be some challenges to overcome this season, however, as the Wildcats must replace several key pieces. Almost every skill position starter from last year’s 13-2 squad graduated. The good news is that Baker will have three outstanding returning linemen on the offense. They are Tyler Burnsed, who has committed to Troy University; Matthew McDuffie; and Myles Morrison. Last year’s starting quarterback, John Green, will move to running back, paving the way for Yulee transfer Alex Bowen to come in and handle the signal caller’s role this season. Rodgers said that losing 26 seniors will force some young guys to step up this year and will require several key players to play offense and defense. Baker County opens the season against St. Augustine.

Clay
Clay High School wants to continue a recent tradition of deep playoff runs. Last season the Blue Devils went 9-4, once again advancing to the third round of the playoffs under coach Josh Hoekstra before losing to district champ Baker County, who also beat Clay during the regular season. Can this year’s offense that returns only its fullback and three offensive linemen come close to scoring 40 or more points in nine games as last year’s team did? Hoekstra said despite having 24 seniors there are many holes to fill. There will be an interesting quarterback battle among the trio of Spencer LeSage, T.K. Kocak, and Turner Erstad. Hoekstra said LeSage is a dual-threat quarterback similar to former Clay star quarterbacks J.T. Turner and Wes Weeks. Hoekstra said fullback Ricky Bernabeu is the most important part of the offense, largely due to his blocking skills. Special teams could provide a boost with kickers Tucker Reape and Jack Schoen and return specialist Derek Holt, who also plays receiver and cornerback. Defensively, Hoekstra praised the efforts of linemen Kenny Johnson, Jeremy Sims, and Ty Summerford. At linebacker, Cody Devore is one of the few returning starters. “They do understand the standard, and they’ve worked while they waited on the JV, then on the scout team,” Hoekstra said. “They also understand everyone in the district is getting better.” Fleming Island, Middleburg, Oakleaf, and Bartram Trail will provide the usual stiff competition that Hoekstra prefers to prepare for district action.

With nine offensive and seven defensive starters returning, the Orange Park Raiders are aiming at making progress this season under third-year coach Tom MacPherson. Orange Park went from 4-5 in MacPherson’s first season to 1-10 last season. “The program has not been to the playoffs since 2010, and we have to figure out how to win games,” MacPherson said. “I feel good about the direction. Every day we’re working on our behavior and habits that are good and bad in football. We’re working on how we carry ourselves. We’re working on intangibles.” MacPherson said playing younger players the last two years should pay off this season. Vinny Walker and Terrance Johnson, also a receiver, are battling at quarterback. Johnson saw plenty of snaps last season. At running back, Zykeim Sermons and Alex Collier, who gained 180 yards against Menendez last year, will split carries. MacPherson said the offensive line, with players like James Rhodes and Cedric Flanders, is a strength due to experience. Where the Raiders are a real threat is on the perimeter with receivers Sean Dixon, Isaiah Blair, and Diego Soto, who MacPherson described as a Swiss Army knife in terms of his versatility. MacPherson said 240-pound defensive end 2017 Overall 2017 Region Kendy Charles is one of best Record Record linemen that he has ever coached. That’s high praise since MacPherson coached current Florida lineman CeCe Jefferson at Baker County. MacPherson also singled out safety David Araujo, who finished fifth in the state in weightlifting. MacPherson hopes the Raider maturation process continues while again navigating a daunting district 5-5A schedule consisting of Mendendez, Ridgeview, Clay, Head Coach: Tom MacPherson Baker County, and Palatka.

Written by: Brent Beaird The Panthers, who went from 0-10 two seasons ago to 6-4 last year, are one of the most improved teams in Clay County under third-year coach Cameron Porch. The Panthers scored 35 points or more five times and 49 points or more four times last season. Senior Tyler Huff, one of the best quarterbacks in the area, leads the high scoring offense that returns nine starters. Porch said Huff has improved in his maturity, decision making, and confidence. The skill position players — including running backs Caleb Plyler, Rolando Grey, and Jaiden Turner and receivers Denali Lindo, Brian Jackson, Isaac Chafin, Spencer Calise and Hartson Gelinas — can score from anywhere on the field. An experienced offensive line is led by upperclassmen Tyler Duggan, Cory Nicholson, and Anthony Troupe. The Panthers return six starters on defense. Linebackers are the strength of the unit with Mike Green, Austin Childers, and Dominic Stanfield, who made several all-star teams last season. Defensive linemen to watch are Od’juan Whitfield, Joseph Chiellino, and Jordan Jackson. In the secondary, look for David Osborn, Wesley Morris, Glen Miller, and Matt Dye, the brother of former Panther star Stanley Dye. Porch said a key to the team’s improvement is momentum gained from an unbeaten weightlifting team for two straight years in a row. The roster increased to more than 80 players in the weightroom over the summer. Porch said the 5-5A schedule consisting of teams such as Baker County, Palatka, Orange Park, Clay, and Menendez is a real challenge.

Although they lost to rival Baker County in the second round of playoffs and played a challenging schedule, the Falcons to battled their way to an 8-4 record last season and won their first playoff game against Belleview High School. The Falcons saw success, rushing a total of 3,500 yards under coach Patrick Turner, who was replaced by a familiar face, previous offensive coordinator Jerry Skipper. The 2018 season will be Skipper’s first year as head coach. He has many expectations for the team, including getting back to the playoffs. “We’re expecting to make a run and be playing during Thanksgiving,” he said. Skipper believes that adopting the mantra “Attack the Day” will breed success. “Success is defined by getting better every single day,” he said. “I think the kids have really bought into it. ... We attack every single rep, every single class, every single team, (and) assignment. If we attack the day, we define success. Don’t take a day off, don’t take a play off, don’t take a rep off.” Skipper believes core players like Ty Edwards, Kenny Logan, and Izez Hayward will give way to a winning season. “Overall, I have a really good staff of coaches, and I’m going to let those coaches coach,” Skipper said. “I’m going to continue to call the offense just like I’ve done the last couple of years and keep scoring points.”

Rebuilding the Gators Written by: Joshua Miller
It is going on eight years since Urban Meyer left Florida as one of the powerhouses in college football. Since his departure, Florida has been a fluctuating program to say the least. They haven’t won a conference championship since Meyer and are losing their prestige quicker than ever. With new head coach Dan Mullen, Gator Nation hopes to put an end to the mediocrity. The Gators are coming off a 4-7 season and need to rebound from it. Luckily for Gators fans, they have the No. 14 ranked recruiting class coming in this year, which is OK given that the team isn’t as strong as it once was. Mullen had a solid career at Mississippi State, finishing with a career record of 6946. But what stands out is his 33-39 SEC record. Florida is an SEC team, and Mullen has only had one season ever (2014) when he had a positive record in the SEC. Mullen will be at a better program, but he still has a ways to go. Will Florida be going to a national title game this year? Probably not. But finishing as a top-15 team in the nation is certainly obtainable.

In 2017 Florida State was bound to have a strong season under rising star Deondre Francois. Unfortunately, those hopes were swiftly crushed by an Alabama defense in the first week of the season. In the season opener, Francois suffered a patellar tendon injury in his left knee and had to sit out for the rest of the season. It all went downhill from there. Freshman backup James Blackman was inserted as the starter, and it was a rough season to watch for Seminoles fans. Weeks before the season ended, head coach Jimbo Fisher was being hounded for his commitment and loyalty to the program. Sure enough, reports surfaced that Fisher would be the new Texas A&M head coach. FSU finished the season 7-6 and 3-5 in ACC matchups. With new coach Willie Taggart, FSU is looking forward to a fresh start. Their schedule this year is like the 2017 schedule; they just don’t have to face Alabama again. It will be interesting to see how Taggart operates this team that still has plenty of NFL talent. However, Taggart’s biggest decision will be his quarterback. With Blackman improving, there will be competition to decide who will be under center in 2018.

The Wolfpack are hoping the hiring of Dennis Bettinger from Paxon will be just what the program needs to turn things around in 2018. The Pack hasn’t had a winning record since 2004, but Bettinger brings a positive attitude that the program welcomes. The challenge, according to Bettinger, is to get the numbers up. Wolfson had only 16 players participate in the spring game versus Stanton, but that has increased to 25 heading into summer workouts. Bettinger will rely on returning starting quarterback/safety Kevon Bryant for leadership in his effort to right the ship. Bryant is a natural leader, and the head coach is excited to have him leading the spread offense. Wolfson will open the regular season against Stanton at home.

Brian Tomlinson’s first year as a head football coach in 2017 was about as good as they come. After several years as a head baseball coach at Union County, which included a state championship there in 2012, and as offensive coordinator for the football team at Union, Tomlinson was named head coach for the Bradford Tornadoes. He led the team to a 10-win season and a semi-final matchup against Raines High. While the first-year head coach wasn’t able to match his 2012 baseball championship with a state title in football on his first try, that doesn’t mean there won’t be another opportunity awaiting him and his Tornadoes in 2018. Tomlinson will have five offensive and six defensive starters back to lead the team back to the playoffs in 2018. Among the impact players that will be back this season are running back Jeremiah Brown, wide receiver/defensive back Nathaniel Davis, defensive lineman Jaquez Mosely, and offensive lineman Gavin Woods. Tomlinson, who is battling back from offseason heart surgery, expects his team to build on last year’s success and try to carry out the motto of “One More Round” in the upcoming season. Raines Looks to Repeat Magic of 2017 Championship Season

Written by: Phil Jones It was a magical season in 2017 for Raines, as they won the school’s first football state championship in 20 years. After starting the season with a 13-10 loss to Lee, Raines went on a 13-game winning streak that took them through the playoffs and straight to the school’s second football state title in history. But, it’s a new season, and head coach Deran Wiley knows it will take a major effort if the Vikings are to repeat in 2018. It will certainly help that Wiley has 10 returning starters coming back to help defend the title, includeing running back Brandon Marshall and linebacker Aric Horne. According to Wiley, the quarterback position is still up for grabs. Whoever gets the job has big shoes to fill and must replace Ivory Durham, who signed with Valdosta State University. Wiley said that while he’s excited to have several key players back in 2018, the passion must be there. “Last year’s team came ready every day; the passion was there every day,” he said. “Our passion is still there, but you have to bring the intensity every day. Each year and each team is different.” Raines begins the defense of its state championship with their regular season opener at home versus Lee High School.

Deadlift Stand with your mid-foot under the bar. Your shins shouldn’t touch it yet. Put your heels hip-width apart, narrower than on squats. Point your toes out 15 degrees. Bend over without bending your legs. Grip the bar narrow, about shoulder-width apart like on the overhead press. Your arms must be vertical when looking from the front. Drop into position by bending your knees until your shins touch the bar. Do not let the bar move away from your mid-foot. If it moves, start from scratch with step one. Straighten your back by raising you chest. Do not change your position – keep the bar over your mid-foot, your shins against the bar, and your hips where they are. Take a big breath, hold it, and stand up with the weight. Keep the bar in contact with your legs while you pull. Don’t shrug or lean back at the top. Lock your hips and knees.

The Interlachen High School administration took steps to improve their program by hiring Matt Yancey as the new head coach. Yancey looks to turn around a team that went from 4-5 in 2016 to 2-8 last season. A closer look at the Rams shows a team that lost seven games in the fourth quarter last year. Yancey said that shows a need to improve conditionin so that the Rams can close out their opponents in those close games in 2018. Interlachen will have four starters back on offense and three back on defense. The Rams will miss Jaquan Walker and Matt Muriello, who have graduated. However, a few impact players returning are linebacker T.J. Beauford, defensive tackle Kentrell Strickland, defensive end Sean Lugar, and running back Uveekie Fields. In addition to the improvement needed in the players’ conditioning, Yancey said the Rams have to be better with the basics. “We have to get better up front,” he said. “Last year, we couldn’t stop the run, so we must get tougher and more fundamentally sound up front on defense.” Interlachen opens the season at home versus the Hornets of Hawthorne High School.

Pirates Looking for Gold
SCHEDULE
Written by: Mary Catherine Bell The Fernandina Beach Pirates are under a new captain this year. Coach Jude Swearingen took over the program this past March after contributing as an assistant coach the last 17 years. The pirates ended the 2017 season 5-5-1. Swearingen looks to change the momentum of this team by focusing on player development both physically and mentally. “We have trained hard in the weight room and on the field throughout the spring and summer developing the skills and fundamentals our staff has instilled in the FBHS program since my taking over in March,” Swearingen said. He believes mature players like Toraino Nelms, Latrell Whitehurst, and John Powell will bring success to the team. “The back end of our defense should be the strength on our team as we return a number of experienced and talented players,” Swearingen said. “John Powell, our returning middle linebacker who had over 100 tackles as a junior, will anchor our back end, giving us the confidence to call this the primary strength of our team.” Swearingen’s expectations for the fall are to beat their county rivals and make it to the playoffs. “That’s a first-year goal, to find a way into the playoffs and start establishing Fernandina as a competitive team year in and year out,” he said. “We had a good spring and have had a strong summer in terms of training and development, so it’s exciting to see how all that translates to the field and in the games.”

The Warriors stormed their conference, leaving teams bewildered and confused. The team made a 180 in the 2017 season and accumulated a record of 10-2. The Warriors reached the regional finals, falling to 2017 champions the Raines Vikings. Rickey Armstrong, who is coming up on his seventh year as head coach of the Warriors, believes each season comes with new lessons. “Every season is different,” Armstrong said. “You have to learn what your team does best early and polish those things.” The Warriors hope to come out on top this season against the Bradford Tornados, who were their only loss in the regular season last year, and maintain their winning status against longtime rivals the Baldwin Indians. Armstrong is determined to be known for winning games by rushing yards. “We have always been a running team,” he said. “We hope to be at least 50/50 this year.” The Warriors are not only striving to win all of their games this year, but also play the majority of their playoff games at home. Bringing the competition to their home turf is something the Warriors take pride in and what coach Armstrong calls a successful season. “Expectations have always been to make the playoffs,” he said. “We are striving to be the No. 1 seed and play the second and third round at home. If we can accomplish that, our season will be successful.”

Keystone Heights head coach Chuck Dickinson is entering his 20th year coaching football at the school. The long-time coach knows that the key to a good season is keeping the team healthy and in fighting shape. “The biggest thing for us is staying away from injuries, no doubt,” he said. “Any injuries could decimate us for the year.” Dickinson said his team’s strength lies with the six returning offensive and defensive starters and that, barring no injuries, his team has a shot at the playoffs. Players to watch include Dan Dodd, a senior offensive lineman and defensive lineman; Josh Hughes, a three-year starter and offensive lineman and linebacker; and Carter Semione, linebacker and tight end. Running back Tyler Friedlin will also be making moves after rushing nearly 600 yards last season. As they say, championships are won in the offseason. Dickinson and his team have been preparing in the weight room and are ready to take on the competition. “For us, preparation means being in great shape and conditioning and just to have a lot of luck and not have injuries,” he said. The team will face Fernandina Beach for their opener.

It’s been a tough couple of seasons for Andrew Jackson High School. The Tigers finished 2-8 in 2016 and won only one game last season. Head coach Antoine Atwater will have a lot of experience returning in 2018, and that should help Andrew Jackson win a few more games. Nine starters return on both sides of the ball, including Artis Maddox, Chris Green, and Jajuan Turner. Atwater is grateful to have 18 starters back to help turn things around, but will miss Shyhiem Ruffin and Jatari Brookins, who have graduated. “We definitely have been in a rebuilding state for a while, but we feel like we’ve got the right mixture of veterans and young guys to build around,” Atwater said. “We definitely expect to be more competitive in 2018.” Andrew Jackson begins their comeback campaign on the road against Providence High School.

When you finish a season 13-0 and declare yourself national champions, there’s no place to go except down the following year. That’s the dilemma Central Florida faces for 2018. The Knights capped the school’s first undefeated season with a 34-27 Sugar Bowl win over Auburn, the same team that beat recognized national champion Alabama during the regular season. That was good enough for UCF to back its claim as the best team in the country last year. The Knights aren’t likely to repeat such a scenario in 2018, but instead will focus on the hype surrounding quarterback McKenzie Milton’s bid for the Heisman Trophy. Why not? Milton passed for over 4,000 yards and 37 touchdowns while completing 67 percent of his passes a year ago. New head coach Josh Heupel was a Heisman winner in 2000 and will look to guide Milton to a similar honor. The running game will be strong again with the return of the top four rushers, led by Adrian Killins (790 yards, 10 TDs, 6.5 yards per attempt). UCF has a tough schedule with the likes of North Carolina and Pittsburgh, but the Knights, with 12 returning starters, will be favored to repeat as American Athletic Conference champions.

After two years of head coach Ian Shields’ high-powered rushing attack, it’s safe to say that Jacksonville University has successfully made the conversion from one of the nation’s best passing attacks to one of the best running games in the country. During coach Kerwin Bell’s nine-year stint (2007-15) with the Dolphins, JU rewrote every school passing record. But now, under Shields’ tutelage, nearly all of the school’s rushing records have been shattered. Last year alone, JU set new season marks for yards (2,962), attempts (601) and touchdowns (31), as well as breaking single-game team rushing records for attempts (77) and yards (514). Expect more of the same in 2018 as Jacksonville returns two of its top three rushers in juniors Irvin Riley and Keenan Simpson. On defense, the Dolphins will be led by a trio of linebackers – Trevor Tufano, Thomas Oporto and Caysaun Wakeley – all of whom gained postseason conference recognition in 2017. Shields revamped his staff and welcomes seven new coaches for 2018, including former quarterback Rylan Wells, who will be a graduate assistant after starting all 21 games the last two seasons and who finished his career among the school’s top five all-time leaders in rushing touchdowns, passing completions, passing attempts, and total yards.

The Episcopal School Eagles are coming off a disappointing 4-6-1 season in 2017. After a stellar 2016 campaign that saw Episcopal go 8-2, including a trip to the playoffs, there were high hopes for the Eagles to continue to soar. However, a 10-10 tie with St. Augustine to start the season, then three consecutive losses put them in a big hole that they just couldn’t recover from. Head coach Mark Brunell has 10 starters returning from last year’s team, including their starting quarterback, senior Zack Blair. Leading the way on the offensive line is another returning senior, Jacob Tylski. On defense, Brunell welcomes back safety Jack Barksdale. Despite the six-loss season in 2017, Brunell said he likes what he sees so far as the troops get ready for the upcoming season. “I’m very proud of this football team”, he said. “They’ve worked hard this spring and summer, and I expect them to play hard and compete in the upcoming season.” Episcopal will open the season at home as they host Christ’s Church Academy.

After back-to-back three-win seasons, the Stallions are hoping new leadership instills a sense of urgency in a team ready to take the next step forward. Returning to Florida to coach in the sunshine state is head man Bobby Dan McGlohorn. Having coached around the South, including Florida and most recently South Carolina, McGlohorn knows that it not only takes talent, but making sure your players know the basics, and that’s where the first-year Stallion head coach looks to begin. “I’m really stressing the fundamentals to our guys,” McGlohorn said. “We want them to be the best that they can be, whether it’s a skill position or a lineman. That’s what we began preaching in the spring, and we’ve continued that same message throughout the summer so far.” There will be a good bit of teaching to do with only two returning starters on offense and defense, especially with a new scheme being introduced on both sides of the ball. The Stallions also graduated 17 seniors from last year’s squad. A host of seniors will be counted on to lead the 2018 team. The group includes quarterback Michael Gilligan, receiver Nolan Mitchell, center Mac Hughes, free safety Cavin Calder, receiver Blake Hawk, and defensive back Luis Delatorre. McGlohorn said there’s going to be a lot of getting to know each other this season. “There’s a lot of new faces in a lot of places, including players and coaches, but so far I’m pleased with where we are,” McGlohorn said. The Stallions looked comfortable in the new offense and defense in their spring contest against Hilliard, winning easily 50-6. Now, Providence will try to keep their winning ways going when they face Andrew Jackson High in the regular season opener.

Last season was full of a lot of promise for Demetric Jackson and his Fort White Indians. After a nine-win season in 2016, the Indians were poised to make a serious run last year, but took a step back, finishing 7-4, including a heartbreaking 28-27 loss in double overtime to Florida State University School. The loss left Jackson and his team looking for answers, and perhaps with 13 returning starters in 2018, they’ll be able to find some. Of the total starters coming back this season, Jackson will have seven on offense and six on defense. Offensively, Fort White will depend on Columbia High transfer Dylan Blair, wide out Rahman Paul, quarterback Brayden Summers, and running back Corey Dryden to lead the offense. Defensively, the Indians will count on returning contributors Kameron Calhoun, Donovan Jenkins, Izaya Latham, and Kobie Archer. “My expectations for this team are to advance deep into the playoffs and make a run at a state championship,” Jackson said. The path for Jackson and his team begins on the road in Live Oak against Kyler Hall’s Suwannee County Bulldogs.

Entering his eighth season at Baldwin High, head football coach Steve Shields has good reason to be optimistic about 2018. Despite finishing 5-5 last season, Baldwin won four of their last five games, averaging 44 points per game. He also has quarterback Gavin Screws returning, as well as wideouts Xavier McGriff and Richard Coffey. Shields did admit that a big key for success in 2018 will be conditioning, especially along the offensive line. The Indians should be in good shape on defense, with key contributors Dana Poole Jr. and Michael Barnes returning, along with Coffey, who will play defensive back in addition to his offensive responsibilities at wide receiver. Baldwin opens the 2018 season against Hamilton County.

Dawg’s Redemption Written by: Gerald Thomas III
The Georgia Bulldogs returned to prominence last season, going 13-2 and winning the SEC Championship for the first time since 2002. They also earned a berth to the national championship, where they fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide 26-23. Jake Fromm jumped onto the scene as the Bulldogs starting quarterback after Jacob Eason went down with a knee injury in the season opener. Despite Fromm being a freshman, he did not disappoint, passing for 2,615 yards with 24 touchdowns. Running back Nick Chubb had a memorable senior campaign after battling injuries over the past two seasons, picking up 1,345 yards and 15 touchdowns. Linebacker Roquan Smith anchored Georgia’s defense – ranked sixth in the nation – leading the team with 137 tackles and 6.5 sacks. Georgia is looking to return to the top of the nation once again, as Kirby Smart enters his third season as the head coach of the team. Fromm will return with his main receiving target Terry Godwin, but his two top running backs, Nick Chubb and Sony Michel, left for the pros. This upcoming season will be a stepping stone for J.R. Reed, as he will hold responsibility for being the defensive lead for the Bulldogs. Georgia hopes to hold the same success as last year, but with one small change: This year, they want to go all the way.

Understanding and Preventing Sudden Cardiac Death in Children and Adolescents Pediatric cardiovascular physicians with Wolfson Children’s Hospital of Jacksonville present at FCAAP program.
It happens unexpectedly – a previously healthy student-athlete dies from sudden cardiac death. The tragedy is often the result of an undiagnosed heart problem. Understanding and preventing sudden cardiac death is an essential topic in pediatric medicine. The Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics recently hosted a program titled “The Future of Pediatric Practice Regional Glances” in Jacksonville, Florida, on sudden cardiac deaths in adolescents. The FCAAP program speakers were pediatric cardiologist Jose Ettedgui, MD, medical director of the UF Health Pediatric Cardiovascular Center at Wolfson Children’s Hospital, and pediatric cardiothoracic surgeon Michael Shillingford, MD, chief of Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery at Wolfson Children’s.
“Sudden cardiac death occurs rarely among young athletes,” Dr. Shillingford said. “However, when sudden cardiac death happens in a young person, it is devastating to the teen’s family, friends, school, and community.”
The program, presented to pediatricians and pediatric physician specialists from around the region, focused on cardiology and preventing SCD. Dr. Ettedgui and Dr. Shillingford discussed the importance of screening, treating, and managing problems and preparing for the possibility of sudden cardiac death. It’s also vital to have automated external defibrillators available with the presence of experienced medical personnel in public settings, they said. The use of an AED can lead to an improved outcome to victims of sudden cardiac arrest. “Sudden cardiac death in young athletes may be preventable,” Dr. Ettedgui said. “Screening can help identify at-risk individuals.”
The congenital heart specialists at Wolfson Children’s Hospital have expertise in all pediatric congenital heart procedures, ranging from simple to highly complex. Whether it’s open-heart, minimally invasive, or video-assisted surgery, its board-certified pediatric cardiologists, electrophysiologists, and cardiothoracic surgeons use the most advanced technology and techniques to repair congenital and rhythm-related heart defects. Wolfson Children’s Hospital offers cardiology checkups, comprehensive testing, and pediatric cardiology specialists at each of its outpatient specialty care locations, including Wolfson Children’s at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick, Georgia; Wolfson Children’s at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare; and the Wolfson Children’s Specialty Centers in Daytona Beach, Fleming Island/Clay County, and Lake City, Florida. Contact www.wolfsonchildrens.com/ locations for more information. Wolfson Children’s surgeons know which treatment is best for each child or teen’s situation and when it should be performed. The team uses advanced imaging techniques, including echocardiography, cardiac MRI, and 3D imaging, to help determine the right approach, resulting in some of the best pediatric heart surgery outcomes in the nation. Services at Wolfson Children’s Hospital of Jacksonville, Florida, are provided primarily by pediatric physician specialists with Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Jacksonville, and the University of Florida College of Medicine – Jacksonville.

Warriors Warriors Rebuild Under Andrea
SCHEDULE
Photography by: Travis Williams Written by: Phil Jones After a 2017 season that saw the Warriors of Eagles View Academy make huge strides over the previous season and nearly make the playoffs, fourth-year head coach Frank Andrea knows that it will take a great effort to keep the Warriors on the rise. Not that Andrea is a pessimist. He is a great motivator and believes in his team — qualities that helped him mold a winning program from a squad that won just one game two years ago. The issue heading into 2018 is the fact that four promising juniors transferred out this offseason, and for a team already thin on numbers, those are losses that the Warriors cannot easily overcome. Andrea has quality players back in 2018, but will also have a lot of youth. Returning contributors are senior lineman Preston Nolan and sophomore Justin Jones, a linebacker/fullback. Also returning is a player that Andrea described as his top skill player and the guy who “drives the bus.” Senior Jakobe Lavoile will be counted on heavily by Andrea at several positions in 2018. Others returning include Noah Rigdon, an outside linebacker/tight end, and transfer Andre’ Rigens, who comes from Georgia. He’ll play running back and linebacker. Cory McCalip has “good moves and is really fast” according to Andrea and will be counted on to help out in 2018. “Losing four players, all juniors, who I expected to be a big part of the team this year really hurts us,” Andrea said. “But we have a good core group of talent that we will build around with a lot of younger players. We will certainly be very young, with some young guys having to step up this year. We will work hard with the kids we have, and they’re a great group, just young. So, we are realistic with our expectations this season.” Andrea and his Warrior team will travel to Daytona Beach to play Warner Christian Academy in their season opener.

Winning a state championship in high school football is tough. Winning back-to-back state championships is even tougher. But that’s exactly what coach David Penland III and his Christians did in 2015 and 2016. Last season, University Christian was going for the three-peat but came up short against Champagnat Catholic 24-7. Still, three state championship game appearances is enough to know that the University Christian program is doing great things, and that should give fans reason to be excited about what lies ahead in 2018. Five starters return on both sides of the ball for Penland, who starts his eighth season as head coach. Juniors Max McClendon, a running back/outside linebacker, and Cody Kopp, a linebacker/wide receiver, return this year to help University Christian. SeniorJaedon Stoshak (athlete) will be counted on to help at several skill positions this season, while senior offensive linemen Allan Adams (committed to UCF) and Caleb Thomas will pave the way up front. Gone is three-year starter Clay Boyd at quarterback, who was instrumental in UC playing for state titles from 2015-17. His replacement will be Ridge Jacobs, a sophomore. Defensively, two-way player Joseph Carter, a sophomore, will be counted on to plug any holes at linebacker. He will also contribute on offense at running back. Junior Matthew Craig will line up at defensive tackle, while senior Derrick Stumph will line up at defensive end. Approaching this season is like any other at University Christian High, according to Penland. “Expectations here at University Christian are always high”, Penland said. “No matter who or how many players we lose, fans expect us to be competitive.” That includes playing and winning a tough schedule, which will once again be the case for the Christians in 2018. University opens the season with Bolles in a clash of powerhouse programs.

Photography courtesy of duvalsports.com Written by: Phil Jones After starting off red hot with six wins in their first seven games to start the 2017 campaign, the Fightin’ Tigers of Lake Butler had big hopes of going far in their district and state playoffs. Four straight losses to end the season, including a loss to Madison County in the playoffs, dashed those hopes. But, it’s a new season, and coach Ronny Pruitt welcomes nine returning starters, including four on offense and five on defense. Among them are Agelu Nunu, a 6’2”, 320-pound defensive tackle. A massive force in the middle of Pruitt’s defensive line, Nunu can bench press 520 pounds, squat 700 pounds, and clean and jerk 325 pounds. He has several D1 offers. Trevor Rogers, a 5’10”, 205-pound middle linebacker also returns and, according to Pruitt, “plays and controls both sides of the ball.” Looking ahead to this season, the head coach will transition the spread offense into some wing, but said, “Some things will take time.” As far as goals for the 2018 season, Pruitt wants his Tigers “to be in the top two in our region and make the playoffs.” Union County will open the season on the road at Williston High.

The Hilliard Flashes went 4-6 in this past season winning one less game than they did in the 2016 season. Their biggest win was against the Duval Charter Panthers with a score of 55-8. Coach Zach Whittenburg stepped down from the head coaching position and has been replaced by John Pate, the former head coach at Fernandina Beach High School. Leadership on the team will not be a problem with 10 returning seniors looking to make their last year their most memorable. The Flashes have a tough schedule with an opening game against Harvest Community High School, who they beat 3829. The also play powerhouse Fernandina Beach High School shortly after, who they lost to 35-0. The Flashes have new competition this upcoming season against well coached teams such as the West Nassau Warriors, who had a winning season of 10-2 in 2017.

The Defenders keep getting closer and closer to their goal of a state championship, and they’ll give it another shot in 2018. With some key pieces returning, that elusive championship may just be within their reach. Last season, Old Plank finished the regular season at 8-0, then after sitting out the first round with a bye, they won their two playoff games against Lakeside Christian and Hernando Christian Academy. In the championship game, the defenders suffered their first loss of the year, a 30-9 defeat to Academy at the Lakes. The season before, Old Plank advanced to the semifinals. The Defenders return starting quarterback Reece Wilkins. He’ll have his starting receiver from a year ago back in John Kilpatrick. Another target will return in tight end John Beatty, with center Samuel Transue also coming back. On defense, linemen Alex Padgett and Sam Transue return. The player that coach Mike Trout and company will count on to lead the defense will be returning linebacker Joel Bosque, a player Trout described as “a beast.” Trout said there is but one goal this season for the Defenders. “We expect to compete for and win the championship this year,” Trout said. “We want to go to the dance again.” Old Plank Christian Academy opens the season against First Baptist Christian Academy.

After having success as head coach of three different schools, Derek Chipoletti has taken over as head coach at St. Johns Country Day. Chipoletti has coached at Bradford, Oakleaf, and Williston compiling a 51-24 record. His best season came in his third at Oakleaf, where he led the Knights to a 12-1 record and a berth in the regional finals. Chipoletti stepped down from Oakleaf following an 8-2 season in 2015 to take a position with wealth management company, Capital Financial Services. “Coaching at St. Johns allows me to keep my day job, which I love, but still be involved in the sport of football and work with kids to teach life lessons and toughness,” Chipoletti said. “There are no shortcuts if you want to win. You have to work hard and pay attention to detail. Football is a great teaching tool, regardless of their future profession.” Chipoletti is inheriting a roster of about 16 players that could expand up to 20-25. He will be working with one of the most promising quarterbacks in Clay County in Max Monroe, who Chipoletti said has all the tools. Monroe has also done a solid job developing his arm in camps and with outside coaches. Chipoletti said his first order of business is to build a coaching staff starting with Steven Reynolds, who has been his righthand man at Bradford and Oakleaf. The Spartan program will continue its independent status under the umbrella of FHSAA. Chipoletti said he hopes the school can jump back into district play in the future.

Written by: Mary Catherine Bell After an abrupt change in coaching staff the previous year, the Flashes came up at a draw. This year, they look to change the momentum of the conference in their favor. One of the team’s strengths that coach Brannon Tidwell, who is coming into his second year as head coach, said will help produce success is the team’s tight knit bond. The team’s closeness will help determine their identity as having a balance between their running and passing percentages. Like many teams in the area, some of the biggest challenges the Flashes face this upcoming season is strength of schedule. “The biggest thing for us is to take everything one day at a time,” Tidwell said. “We definitely will have our work cut out for us this year. Keeping them focused is the main thing.” After being hired as the new head coach just two months prior to their first game last year, Tidwell and the rest of the coaching staff’s goal is to continue getting to know the players. “The biggest thing is learning the kids and knowing who they really are and what they can really do,” Tidwell said. “Now that we know the kids a lot better, it’ll be easier to coach them. Familiarity is the biggest thing.” Tidwell’s expectations for the team are simple: make each practice and play each game better than the last.

If Bishop Snyder can get past the slow start that has plagued them over the last three seasons, then perhaps the Cardinals can build towards more wins in 2018. The team lost their first three games last year, their first six games two years ago, and five of their first seven games in 2015. That type of start can just kill your season before it even begins. But that was then. It’s a new year, with several key returners back to lead the way. Offensively, coach Travis Markoski’s team will have six starters back, with the defense returning seven starters. Several of these contributors from a season ago will play both ways this year, as Markoski looks to get his best players in positions to help the team. That group includes junior wide receiver/cornerback Trey Williams and senior running back/ linebacker Pedro Velez. Elsewhere, senior middle linebacker Malik Fordham will return to anchor the defense, along with sophomore cornerback/safety Ijon Richardson. Another player that Markoski hopes to have back at some point this season is junior Allan Chavez, a junior defensive tackle. Chavez had ankle surgery during the offseason, and the head coach is looking at September before he can return to help the Cardinals along the defensive line. Markoski said the defense has several playmakers he thinks can truly help his team improve on their win total. (Last year’s team finished 5-5). The team’s quarterback from a year ago has transferred to concentrate on basketball, so Markoski and Bishop Snyder will rely 2017 Overall 2017 Region on young quarterback Josh Record Record Williams to lead the effort at signal caller. While the Cardinals head man is confident in Williams, he knows his quarterback is still learning, so he doesn’t want to overwhelm him in the Cardinals run-pass option offense. Bishop Snyder opens the 2018 campaign with a home game, hosting Duval Charter.

Saints
Saints Go Marching to Sunshine State Conference
SCHEDULE SCHEDULE
Photography courtesy of George Whitaker Jr. Written by: Phil Jones The Saints look forward to the upcoming season for a number of reasons. Among them are a host of returning key contributors from last season, which includes six offensive starters and seven on defense. Another reason for optimism is that the Saints have had a record number of players participate in offseason and summer workouts since head coach Jamie Gamel arrived at Cedar Creek seven seasons ago. Perhaps the best reason to get excited is that beginning with the 2018 season, the Saints will transition to the Sunshine State Athletic Conference. This will put them back playing teams that are more their roster size, such as Christ Church, Harvest Community, Bishop Snyder, and other teams Cedar Creek played years ago. Key returners include Kareem Mixon, Dante Jackson, Edward Berry, Jonathon Brazle, and Darran Mathis. According to Gamel, he has a ton of younger players this year, with only two seniors returning. He said the younger players are bringing an effort unseen since he’s been at Cedar Creek. “We have high expectations for the upcoming season,” Gamel said. “Last year we had a bunch of seniors, but not the best effort. This year, it’s just the opposite. The culture has changed to one of focus and hard work. These younger guys are at a different level.” Cedar Creek will kick off the upcoming season with a home game against St. Joseph Academy.

Bicycle Crunch Lie on the floor. Stretch your legs out straight. Place your hands behind your head. Raise your legs so that your thighs are perpendicular to the ground and your calves are parallel to the ground. Keep your feet together. This is called tabletop position. Now lift your head up and touch your right elbow to the left knee while pulling your knee up towards your head. At the same time, straighten your right leg, keeping it several inches off of the floor - similar to the motion you’d make while pedaling a bicycle. At the same time, straighten your left leg, keeping it off of the floor. Don’t forget to tighten those abs. You’ve now completed one bicycle crunch.

2017 Overall Record
The Eagles of Christ Church Academy look to keep their winning ways going in 2018 under head coach Jim Stomps. Kicking off his fourth season at the helm of Christ Church, Stomps has taken his team to the playoffs in each of his first three seasons, including last year’s 6-3 team, and he’ll have some key members back to try to make it four in a row. The offense will see four starters from last year returning, including junior running back Cadence Lampp. His brother, D.J., was also a running back last year, so Cadence will try to keep the Lampp family tradition out of the Eagles backfield this season. Paving the way on the offensive line is returning left tackle Matt Jaroszeski. The 6-foot-5 junior is a three-year starter and will be counted on to provide strong blocking up front for Lampp and his fellow backs. Defensively, senior Kole Keene returns at middle linebacker. His 114 tackles were crucial to the Eagles defense last season. Opponents will certainly try to run away from returning senior, defensive, four-year starter, and end team captain Jacob Reeves. An All-State selection last season, the Weber State commit has nine sacks in each of the last two seasons. Christ Church Academy will open their season a week earlier than most area schools with a home game against Hilliard.

Despite a new coach and a new offense, it was still a tough season for the Wildcats. Camden managed only three wins in 2017 and lost all of their region games, causing them to miss the playoffs once again. Now in his second season at the helm in Kingsland, coach Bob Sphire has brought his wide open offense from North Gwinnett High School, a major change as Camden had always used the Wing-T offense. Originally from Kentucky, Sphire took over at North Gwinnett in 2006. The Bulldogs made the quarterfinals in six seasons and were state runners-up in 2007 and 2013. In addition, the Bulldogs made the state quarterfinals in 2006, 2008, 2009, and 2011 and were region champions five times. The Wildcats will have just seven starters returning, but they hope to build around that nucleus of team leaders that includes seniors Ronnin Wright at safety and Logan Berryhill at wide receiver. Camden will open the 2018 football campaign at home against the West Forsyth Wolverines.

The Charlton County Indians made another deep run in the playoffs in 2017, making it to the third round of the Class 1A tournament. The Indians went 7-2 on the regular season, with their only two losses coming to state champion Clinch County and state runner-up Irwin County. They won their first four games and had a strong season going into the playoffs that included a first round 49-46 shootout against Montgomery County at the Swamp. Charlton County then downed Commerce before falling to ECI in the quarterfinals. Coach Rich McWhorter is now in his 31st year at the school, his 29th as head coach. A past In the Game SEGA Coach of the Year, he has led his team to the playoffs in all but one of those seasons. Charlton has 10 starters returning for the 2018 season, including highly-recruited athlete Raykwon Anderson. The Indians will start the season under the oaks on St. Simons Island as they take on private school Frederica Academy.
