Eight glacier ski areas are already open in Austria, and Kitzbühel is aiming to open on 22 October this year. There’s also Saas-Fee and Zermatt in Switzerland, and (from 1 October) Tignes in France. You could be among the first to ride up to the Stubai glacier near Innsbruck in its new giant gondola cabins built at a cost of tens of millions of euros and due to reopen on 30 September for its 10-month-long ski season. NEW SIX-SEATER LIFTS AT VAL THORENS Europe’s highest major resort, Val Thorens in Les 3 Vallées, has announced that two new sixseater chairlifts will be running there this coming winter following a €20 million investment by the SETAM lift company. The former Boismint quad chairlift is one of those being upgraded to a high-speed six-seater. The other new lift will replace the old Roc and Stade drag lifts and will end at the top of the Trolles run.
NEW GONDOLA AND RUN FOR GALTÜR The family-oriented resort of Galtür, neighbour to better-known Ischgl in the Austrian Tirol, has announced it’s installing a new 10-seat gondola ahead of the coming ski season. The new Euro 8m gondola will replace the existing Breitspitzbahn chairlift and also extend Galtür’s ski area, with the bottom station considerably A newly created 3km piste will be sweeping down to the bottom station. galtuer.com
LA PLAGNE STOPS GROOMING GLACIER There’ll be no groomed runs on the Bellecôte glacier above La Plagne from this winter on, the French resort has announced. The Bellecôte glacier, formerly a summer ski destination, is the highest point of La Plagne’s huge ski areas, which boast 2,000m of life-served vertical. The aim of the no-grooming policy is to make the area even more appealing to advanced skiers and boarders, a resort spokesperson said.

ANCIENT IMAGE OF SKIER DEFACED A 5,000-year-old rock carving on the island of Tro off Norway’s west coast depicting a hunting scene including hunters on skis has been defaced in an act described as a “sad, sad story” and a “national tragedy” by archaeologists who added that the damage was irreparable. The perpetrators were two boys who said they had only intended to make the scene easier to see. “It was done out of good intentions and I don’t think they understood how serious it was," the local mayor commented.
MORE FREE CAR CHARGING IN SKIWELT Austria’s giant SkiWelt ski area has announced that its network of electric charging stations located in the car parks at the base of its various lifts will be further expanded for this coming season. The SkiWelt will have nine charging points available to charge up their cars free of charge during a day on the slopes using the same 100% “green” hydro power the area uses to power all its lifts.
ANOTHER $800M FOR THE AMERICAN DREAM Another $800m of funding is set to go into the long-delayed American Dream “megamall” in New Jersey, which features North America’s first indoor snow slope. Work on the mall started 12 years ago, and the ski slope was completed in 2008, but neither it nor the still incomplete mall have ever opened. The cost of American Dream has now reached almost $5 billion, and the latest in a very long list of hoped-for opening dates is “mid-2018”.

Skis are Now More Versatile and User Friendly... Isn’t It About Time You Upgraded Yours?
GOOD NEWS FOR SKIING FAMILIES Work at Courchevel’s Children’s Village this winter will see further improvements to France’s largest on-snow area dedicated to learning and fun for kids aged 18 months or older. Covering some 50 hectares, the children village is already the biggest ski area for children in France. It is fully marked out and a completely closed and secure environment for learning safely and even has its own ski lifts. This winter 2016/17 the children’s village promises more fun for kids with a new wooden hut being built this summer where children will be able to take a break from the snow in what the resort says will be a “magical place in the middle of the forest.” They’ll also be able to get a snack and drink a hot chocolate there. Meanwhile across the Atlantic Vail Resorts handed out more than 30,000 free lift passes to school children last winter and plan to do the same again this winter. North America’s largest ski resort operator, which runs a dozen ski areas on the continent including those with the two largest ski areas, Whistler Blackcomb and Park City, runs a scheme called “Epic SchoolKids” in Colorado where it is based and operates Vail, Beaver Creek, Keystone and Breckenridge resorts. The free passes are available to children from
