Excitement is building as the new ski season nears! Many are scanning Alpine weather reports, checking for early snowfall laying the groundwork for what we hope will give great conditions as soon as the 2024/25 season gets going! Early signs are good with heavy snowfall in mid-September and more as we started October, getting pulses racing!

Of course, for the really dedicated, there are already about a dozen glacier ski areas already open, including Alpine glaciers and northerly centres up in Lapland.

As usual, you’ll find this issue of InTheSnow chock-full of new-season news and views, and there’s much, much more updated daily on our website, socials, and regular White Out podcast.

You’ll also find features with advice for solo ski holidaymakers, a growing trend according to travel industry bodies, and for returning skiers who have not been on the slopes for some years but want to get back on the snow. They include the great Austrian ski racer Marcel Hirscher, who is returning to ski racing after five years in retirement, this time competing for The Netherlands, his mother’s country. He’s interviewed in our "10 Mins With" column. You can also read all about the upcoming season including the more affordable periods to book, and when the big festivals and competitions will take place. Everything is ready. Now we just need the snow to fall, travel to be smooth, and for everyone to have a great season!

FIRST TRIPLE FLIP

Nineteen-year-old Czech snowboarder Jakub "Kuba" Hroneš has etched his name in the annals of snowboarding history by executing the world's first triple flip off a rail. Officially titled the “Switch Boardslide Switch Triple Underflip 1170”, the trick is a manoeuvre where the

SCOTTISH GONDOLA

Scottish ski centre Glencoe could get a stylish new gondola as part of an overhaul that would also see a new snowmaking system, wind turbine to generate green energy and new staff accommodation as part of a £26 million masterplan. The Scotsman’s Roger Cox reports that the new gondola would cut the current 15-minute ascent time on the old chairlift to five and increase capacity five-fold to 3,000 people per hour.

snowboarder approaches the rail with their non-dominant foot forward, rotates 90 degrees on the rail, faces downward towards the landing, launches off the rail, performs a triple flip, adds a 90-degree rotation to the left, and lands with their dominant foot forward. "This results in a

NEW CHALET

Ski Beat has a new high-spec chalet available in French resort La Rosière, which offers cross-border skiing to Italy. Chalet Perdrix is 250m from the Les Eucherts Express chairlift, ski school meeting point and nursery slopes, with skiing back to within 50m. The chalet comprises three independent chalets, on separate floors, each sleeping up to 12 and with its own host to prepare cooked breakfasts, afternoon tea and cakes, and threecourse evening meals with unlimited wine.

triple flip with three-and-a-half rotations in total,” a spokesperson for sponsors Red Bull explained. The feat unfolded along a specially constructed 10.5m rail, standing 1.7m high, located in Svatý Petr, a part of the Czech Republic’s best-known resort, Špindlerův Mlýn.

53-YEAR-OLD CHAIRLIFT

Utah’s Snowbird ski area has upgraded its original Wilbere double chairlift, a resort stalwart and favourite for more than five decades, first installed in 1971. The new lift is also a fixed grip, but this time a quad, but there are no plans for it to run any faster than the 2.5m per second speed of its predecessor. However, doubling the number of seats on each chair, its capacity doubles from 1,200 to 2,400 people per hour.

MORE 18-30S HOLS

Action Outdoors has launched an expanded programme of holidays for young people aged 18-30 for the 2024/25 ski season. The emphasis is on all-inclusive value for money in UCPA centres in some of the top French ski resorts including Val

RESCUE X-TRAIL

Nissan has created a version of its X-Trail e-4ORCE extensively modified for mountain rescue needs. Those modifications include the replacement of the wheels with snow tracks, giving traction on slippery pistes, while the rear seats have been removed to allow the installation of a stretcher, to allow the transportation of injured skiers to the nearest medical facility, and a seat for a medical professional.

d'Isère, Val Thorens and Les Arcs. Prices start at £541pp (18-25s) and £551pp (18-30 Exclusive weeks), which includes 7 nights full-board accommodation, a full area ski pass for 6 days and ski or snowboard rental and instruction. action-outdoors.co.uk

LA SAULIRE’S BACK

Courchevel’s iconic La Saulire cable car is set to reopen this winter following a €10M upgrade. The lift’s cabins will have a new panoramic design and more comfortable layout for the 130 passengers each can carry. The lift will ascend at a fast 11m per second, giving a capacity of 1,500 skiers per hour. It opens on 6 December 2024.

THE SKI TOWN THAT’S TRULY GOLDEN

When it comes to the perfect ski holiday, it’s all about one thing: location, location, location! And if you’re dreaming of pristine powder and an authentic mountain town bursting with charm and adventure, look no further than Golden, British Columbia.

Golden is a snow-sports paradise with five worldclass ski areas within a two-hour drive. Fifteen minutes from downtown, Kicking Horse Mountain Resort features five expansive alpine bowls and a fast gondola covering 1,314m of vertical rise, meaning skiers are whisked straight into alpine terrain in a matter of minutes. Outside the resort, Golden is known for its guided backcountry adventures. Fun fact: heli-skiing was born right here in Golden’s backyard. The region is home to four heli-ski areas and one cat-ski, offering thrill-seekers some of the most exhilarating snow adventures you can find on planet earth.

Prefer something a little more grounded? Well, Golden’s Dawn Mountain Nordic Centre and Golf Course offer 35km of serene cross-country ski tracks, and if that’s not enough snow-filled fun, you can always opt for snowshoeing, ice skating, or indulge in a little tubing adventure. Golden is a hotspot for guided snowmobiling tours (for all levels of experience) where you can explore 240km of groomed trails and four maintained areas. But it’s not just the location that makes Golden stand out – it’s the snow. Nestled between the Selkirk, Purcell and Rocky Mountains, this place is blessed with some of the lightest, fluffiest powder you’ve ever seen, and it sticks around for longer too. So, it comes as no surprise that Golden boasts the world’s highest concentration of backcountry lodges, offering everything from rustic cabins to luxurious, catered lodges, perfect for exploring the untamed winter wilderness. Kicking Horse receives up to 750cm (yep, you heard that right: nearly 25 feet!) of snow each winter.

In a world increasingly dominated by cookie-cutter ski resorts, Golden stands out as one of Canada’s last authentic ski towns. You won’t find touristy pretences here – just a tight-knit, welcoming community of winter sports lovers who embrace visitors with open arms.

After a day of adventure, where should you go apresski? Perched high atop Kicking Horse Mountain Resort at over 2,300m is the Eagle’s Eye Restaurant – the highest-elevation dining experience in Canada, offering panoramic views across the national parks. Golden is home to award-winning restaurants like Whitetooth Mountain Bistro, Cedar House Restaurant, Eleven22 and The Island, where rustic meets refined for a culinary treat. There’s also plenty of cosy cafés, lively bars and unique shopping spots, where local artisans showcase their one-of-a-kind creations.

Golden also hosts incredible winter events, including the only North American stop of the Freeride World Tour at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. This year, the event is scheduled for the weather window 7-13 February 2025. The same month will see the brilliant Snow King Masque Parade take place, a festival great for kids, with dancing, celebrations and incredible costumes.

So, you’ve made the decision to go? Golden has an amazing range of accommodation, from classic motels or quirky bed-and-breakfasts to full-service hotels with all the bells and whistles. High-quality hostel accommodation is another option, or you can even head into the backcountry to stay a world away in remote cabins and lodges.

The final golden nugget (did you see what I did there?) is that getting there is also a breeze. It's either a three-hour drive from Calgary International Airport through the scenic Canadian Rockies, which only adds to the anticipation as you approach this beautiful ski town. If you don’t like the whole driving on the right, a daily winter bus service, the Golden Shuttle, runs directly from Calgary Airport to both Golden and Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. Or, if you do want to use a connecting flight, you can opt to fly into the Canadian Rockies International Airport two and a half hours south of Golden.

This really is a truly authentic Canadian winter getaway, with world-class skiing, cosy and comfortable lodging and genuine hospitality that's hard to beat.

French lift manufacturer MND has unveiled a new model of gondola lift, ORIZON™, which it says will be able to double the capacity of existing lists. MND say they have invested 20 million euros in creating their ORIZON™ lift, designing it to be able to carry a wide range of configurations, from 6-seater chairlifts to 10-, 16- and 20-seat gondolas, and capacities of up to 8,000 people per hour.

BACK FROM THE WILDS

Le Grand Bornand in the Aravis Region of the French Alps has invested €6m in upgrading its 42-year-old Duche triple chairlift. The lift enables the return of skiers from the wild and grandiose valley of Annes, at the foot of Pointe Percée, towards the Grand-Bornand Chinaillon station via the long slopes. The comfortable new quad chairlift has a priority of improving sustainability with a new route avoiding sensitive natural habitats.

Rail travel to the French Alps is the fun and easy way to reach the slopes this winter! Skip the hassle and complications of travelling to the airport, with the extra costs in time and money, as well as battling to meet those unrealistic baggage allowances. Instead, choose smart, environmentally-friendly rail travel and whizz straight to the heart of the Alps on a fast, comfortable train. You can even score an extra day on the slopes!

French ski specialist Travelski has two decades of experience and a

knowledgeable team waiting on the phone to help with all the advice you need. Travelski packages include what most holidays by air do not – a very handy 7-day lift pass, saving you up to a whopping €395 in Les 3 Vallées, for example. Their holidays are also all-inclusive, so along with your apartment or hotel, Travelski Express rail tickets, and that precious free lift pass, you’ll also get transfers to and from your accommodation from your destination station included. They’re usually just minutes apart too,

rather than those lengthy airport transfers. Travelski operates to most leading French ski resorts and to the world’s largest areas in which they’re located. The company also offers a very wide range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, from top value to pure luxury, with family ski holidays made especially easy and relaxed when travelling together by train.

OVO’S 28 NEW CHALETS

High-end chalet specialist OVO Network has added 28 new chalets to its fabulous collection of more than 200 properties in authentic Alpine resorts such as Le Grand Bornand, Combloux, Samoëns, Châtel and Saint-Gervais.

The company has undergone a major rebrand over the last year, with a commitment to delivering the best mountain holidays and proactively supporting mountain communities across the seasons.

“We’ve added some fabulous new

properties for the coming winter season –both large chalets and smaller properties – providing something for all group sizes. While every property is unique, the common factor is that they are all in authentic Alpine destinations, rather than the purpose-built resorts that often lack character,” said Chris Thompson, Director of OVO Network.

OVO Network has also enhanced its flexible cancellation policy for guests’ peace of mind. There are now two

options, with one offering a 90% refund for cancellations up to two days before arrival.

“In an uncertain world, cancellation terms have become a key part of the buying decision for many holidaymakers. We wanted to give guests a choice of options, enabling them to select the cancellation policy that best suits their individual needs,” Chris adds.

FLEXIBILITY & VALUE FOR YOUR NEXT SKI GETAWAY

If you’re looking for a more flexible approach to ski holidays, you’re not alone, and SkiWeekends is here to help.

Short ski breaks are on the rise, giving snow lovers more options to tailor their trips to their schedules and budgets.

To find out why this trend is growing and how skiers can make the most of it, we turned to SkiWeekends, the UK’s leading flexible ski specialist with over 35 years of experience. Offering everything from short ski trips to full weeks, they’re seeing increasing demand for flexible, value-packed ski breaks.

In today’s fast-paced world, committing to a full week of skiing can be overwhelming. That’s why flexible ski holidays are becoming more popular. Dan Fox, owner of SkiWeekends, says, “More people are choosing shorter trips over a full week on the slopes.” These 3-4 day breaks offer a more relaxed experience, perfect for those who don’t want to ski for six consecutive days. Plus, taking two shorter trips increases your chances of catching ideal snow conditions in different locations.

BETTER VALUE FOR MONEY

One major advantage of flexible ski holidays is the excellent value for money. A 4-night trip provides 4½ days of skiing for less than a traditional week-long holiday. This allows you to maximise your skiing time without paying for unused days. Additionally, flexible holidays let you explore multiple resorts in a season – ski in one resort in January and try another in March.

ACCOMMODATION: FLEXIBLE & CONVENIENT

SkiWeekends partners with over 100 hotels that offer flexible stays, where you can arrive any day of the week (except

Saturday) and stay as few as three nights or up to 14. This flexibility lets you tailor your trip to fit your schedule perfectly.

SkiWeekends also offers the largest selection of flexible-stay chalets, from cozy 8-bed chalets to spacious 42-bed Club Chalets. Many chalets offer ski-in/ski-out access and feature amenities like saunas, hot tubs, and hammams. These are located in top resorts in the Portes du Soleil region – Avoriaz, Morzine, and Les Gets – as well as in the famous 3 Valleys, home to Courchevel and Les Menuires.

BEST RESORTS FOR SHORT BREAKS

For short ski breaks, proximity to the slopes and easy transfers are key. Resorts like Les Gets and Chamonix are only an hour from the airport, making them perfect for quick getaways. If you want ski-in/ ski-out convenience, Avoriaz is just 30 minutes further.

Other great short-break resorts include Engelberg and Crans-Montana in Switzerland, and Kaprun and Schladming in Austria. For luxury, Courchevel is just over two hours from the airport, while Tignes and Val d’Isère, with their extensive terrain and reliable snow, are worth the three-hour minibus transfer.

PLAN YOUR NEXT SKI WEEKEND

With flexible stays, easy transfers included in the price, and a wide range of accommodations, SkiWeekends makes short ski breaks easy and hassle-free.

TREE POSE

Stand tall with your core engaged and belly button to spine. Shift your weight onto your left foot. Place the sole of your right foot on your inner left thigh or calf, pressing gently to create a stable base, avoiding the knee. Bring your palms together at your chest, or for an advanced pose, wrap your arms to open the back. Lengthen your spine and focus on a point ahead to maintain balance. Hold, then switch sides. Repeat on the other side.

Aimee Fuller is a former Team GB 2X Winter Olympian, competing in Slopestyle and Big Air in the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics, ranking 3rd in the overall Big Air World Cup Tour. Since the Olympics, Aimee has gone on to write a book, "Fear Less Live More", worked on a documentary "Running in North Korea", presented the 2022 Winter Olympics, and regularly presents Ski Sunday and BBC's Morning Live, Wimbledon, and The Great North Run for BBC. Aimee is also the host of The Monday Mile Podcast, which taps into mindset, motivation, and resilience and shares her passion for wellness.

"I found yoga such an essential tool within my routine as an athlete"

"I did my yoga teacher training in 2018, after the Winter Olympics. I found it such an essential tool within my routine as an athlete. It was the one stable thing that I could control, and its simplicity of minimal equipment was so attractive for me on the road. I incorporated 15-30 minutes into my morning routine every morning before I rode, and 30 minutes after riding for recovery."

SINGLE LEG POSE

Stand tall with feet together. Ground down through your right foot, almost imagining gripping the mat with your toes. Lift your left foot, bending the knee to your chest, and clasp your hands around the foot, gently extending the leg out at a 90-degree angle. Keep a slight bend in the floating leg to protect the hamstring as you stand tall and strong through the standing leg. Remember to engage your core, lengthen your spine, and pick a focal point to help with balance. Hold for 3-5 conscious breaths, then switch sides.

ACTIVE PIGEON

Bring your right knee forward, placing it behind your right wrist and sliding your right ankle toward your left wrist. Extend your left leg straight back with the top of your foot on the mat. Square your hips forward and walk your hands out, grounding them on the mat. Maintain a long spine and engage your core. Hold for a few deep breaths, then switch sides to open the hips and release tension. Repeat on the other side.

RUNNER'S LUNGE

Step your right foot forward between your hands, aligning your knee above the ankle. Lower your hips toward the mat, keeping the back leg extended with the heel lifted. Place your hands on either side of your front foot. Lengthen your spine, engage your core, and breathe deeply. This enhances hip flexibility and leg strength. Repeat on the other side.

Ihad an exciting chat with Aimee, and we dived into how yoga isn't just about flexibility and zen vibes, but how it could actually boost your skiing game!

What are the primary benefits of incorporating yoga into a skier's routine?

Yoga is an incredible tool for rehab and prerehab. At a base level, it incorporates multiple components that benefit our time on the mountain. The grounding element of being present, the strength in extreme ranges, the flexibility to give us the range on the mountain to enable us to ski/snowboard pain-free, and the agility element of yoga to help us navigate an ever-changing environment.

How does yoga improve balance and stability? Yoga is a fantastic tool for stabilising the little muscles around the toe joints, knees, and ankles. I always incorporate balance into my yoga routine in the morning. It awakens and fires up the small stabilising muscles, which makes it the perfect addition. Through balance comes strength, and the instability we create by trying new moves on our mats builds stability.

Can yoga help prevent common skiing injuries?

YES, it’s a fantastic tool for preventing injury and can be used to break up a rehab routine during an injury. I found rehab particularly boring, so I have found ways to incorporate rehab into my routine. For example, I’ve always struggled with plantar fasciitis. Within my yoga sequence, by adding a series of balancing poses, the feet are working and building strength through all of the single-leg poses. The fascia is activated, engaged, and put through tension, which builds strength.

How often should skiers practise yoga to see noticeable improvements in their performance?

I think two to three yoga sessions a week are majorly beneficial. It can be as little as 20-30 minutes. I now enjoy going to classes three times a week. It’s part of my routine, and I see it as a way of rehabbing my body so I am ready for whatever the mountain throws at me. It’s a no-brainer, so get the mat out and leave it rolled out. It’s as simple as stepping onto it and beginning to move.

We know how.

PEISEY VALLANDRY THE HEART

OF PARADISKI

It may not be one of the best-known ski resorts in the French Alps, but PeiseyVallandry's great location in the skiing world is becoming an open secret. Once something of a sleepy backwater, and still strongly connected to its traditional rural roots on the edge of the beautiful Vanoise National Park, the village was thrust into the spotlight when its two giant neighbours, the ski areas of Les Arcs and La Plagne, decided to create a lift to connect their areas right where it sits. They called their joint area, which Peisey-Vallandry now sits at the heart of, Paradiski.

PARADISKI

One of France’s great ski areas, as well as one of the world’s three largest, Paradiski, with 425km of slopes, brings together what were already world-class ski areas in their own right, the huge ski regions of La Plagne and Les Arcs. The connection was made by the remarkable Vanoise Express double-decker cable car, which bridges the valley separating the two areas in just a matter of minutes.

The amount of skiing here is incredible. On both sides, there are over 200km of slopes with wonderful long runs and terrain to suit every ability level and every taste. Each side has glacier-crowned slopes above 3,200m and among the world’s greatest lift-served vertical descents of over 2,000 metres available.

And the sweet spot at the heart of it all is Peisey-Vallandry, located right by the Vanoise Express, meaning that skiers and snowboarders based here are in pole position each morning with a choice of heading out into either the La Plagne or Les Arcs slopes. You can argue that this is one of the best-located ski resorts on the planet!

PEISEY-VALLANDRY

Peisey-Vallandry is made up of several smaller hamlets which have grown in size since Paradiski’s creation but remain friendly, intimate, and strongly connected to their traditional rural roots. There’s a good choice of cafes and restaurants without the raucous après-ski scene of some bigger resorts. Instead, you'll enjoy a more authentic experience where you can relax and soak up that French ambience. The local Nancroix valley on the edge of the Vanoise National Park is a big draw for cross-country skiers and has its own Nordic centre where you can try this yourself, including the exciting option of biathlon. The local slopes above Peisey-Vallandry are largely gentle and tree-lined, making them a great choice for families and novice skiers, although the many challenges the Paradiski region offers experienced skiers are only moments away too. The trees lining the pistes that provide shelter on bad weather days are also great for tree skiing when snow conditions are optimal.

ACCOMMODATION

Ski France has some stunning properties available, enabling you to make the most of your holiday in Paradiski.

The Residence Chalet Les Amis sits right at the heart of the beautiful Nancroix Valley and provides fabulous views of the Vanoise massif and all the area has to offer. It’s a recently renovated residence in a brilliant location near both the villages of PeiseyVallandry and Peisey Nancroix and close to the Vallandry Express lift, which provides fast access to the heart of the Paradiski region, allowing you to choose whether you head into the Les Arcs or La Plagne sides of this amazing ski area each morning.

The residence itself is divided into five large, modern apartments, each of which can accommodate between 8 and 14 guests. These are spacious, light-filled, and very comfortable accommodations, each with a well-equipped kitchen. The Residence Chalet Les Amis has a shared wellness area with a sauna and Jacuzzi, and there’s a shared ski room too. It’s a brilliant base for your Paradiski adventure. Alternatively, Ski France’s Chalet Ponturin, located right next door to Chalet Les Amis, is also perfectly positioned between PeiseyNancroix and Peisey Vallandry at the heart of Paradiski but is also in a wonderful, quiet location with nature all around you, just a short distance from both villages. Chalet Ponturin is a beautifully refurbished duplex filled with light and sleeping 8-10 guests in four bedrooms, each with private bathrooms. Along with a spacious living area, there’s a well-equipped kitchen and a large balcony with views stretching out to the Vanoise National Park. It shares the wellness area with a sauna and Jacuzzi located at Chalet Les Amis.

Each apartment features bedrooms with a dressing room, private bathroom, and high-quality welcome products. Their fully equipped kitchens include extra touches like Nespresso machines, juicers, and induction hobs along with high-spec refrigerators, freezers, ovens, microwaves, dishwashers, washer/dryers, ironing boards, irons, filter coffee makers, kettles, and toasters. Both properties have been designed and finished to a very high standard. With a modern design, plenty of space, and very comfortable, these self-catered apartments have bed linen, towels, and end-of-stay cleaning all included in your holiday package. This is the winter for you to put yourself at the heart of Paradiski and discover just what a great location Peisey-Vallandry has found itself in!

Peak Gondola moves skiers between the two mountains at the top.

Mountain Heaven burst onto the ski holiday market two decades ago with a simple idea: to deliver a higher-quality holiday at an affordable price.

That might sound like marketing speak, but in Mountain Heaven’s case, there was genuine commitment and belief.

The original small team worked day and night to ensure their service went above and beyond, without clients needing to spend an arm and a leg. They made sure all the little extras were included, every service was covered, and there was always someone in the resort to help when needed. Over more than 20 seasons, many

of those early clients have become longtime friends.

The company has operated in different resorts over the years and still offers selfcatering holidays in La Plagne, where it all began, and Switzerland’s Grimentz. It is in La Plagne that the company has always had its largest presence, and Mountain Heaven has now decided that, moving forward, it will focus entirely on La Plagne. They will use their decades of local knowledge and extensive property portfolio to become the La Plagne area specialists.

They are already the largest catered chalet company in La Plagne 1800 with 10 catered chalets to choose from. They’re also the

only company with accommodation that is fully financially bonded in both Plagne 1800 and La Plagne Montalbert, meaning that for their self-catered holidays, all guests’ money is 100% safe.

“We started in La Plagne 21 years ago and over the years have experimented with other resorts, but our main base has always been La Plagne. It’s the best resort in the world, so we thought, why not use our knowledge and connections to become the La Plagne specialists?” says Mountain Heaven’s Nick Williams.

“As avid skiers ourselves, we noticed a gap in the market for versatile, reversible ski wear that allows skiers to easily switch up their style on the slopes. We also wanted to make a positive difference in the ski community by offering sustainable, high-quality gear that stands out,” said Emily. Viridis’ reversible ski suits are crafted from recycled plastic bottles, combining eco-conscious design with bold, retro-inspired aesthetics that will turn heads on the slopes. Each Viridis suit is fully reversible, allowing you to switch between two vibrant looks with ease. With playful, retro vibes, bright colours, and bold patterns, these suits are designed to stand out. Engineered for peak performance, the suits feature 10,000mm waterproofing, 10,000gm breathable 3-layer fabric, YKK zips, taped seams, and superior insulation to ensure warmth and protection in extreme conditions.

The perfect choice for women who want to make a statement and bring energy to the slopes while doing their bit for the planet, owning a Viridis suit means less packing and more fun. One suit. Two styles. A thousand adventures!

SKIING WITH TROLLS

Sälen, Sweden’s largest ski area in terms of total kilometres of slopes and number of lifts, and a mecca for families, is enhancing the experience in the well-known Trollskogen in Hundfjället. This troll-themed snow fun area for children and families will now have sound effects to “intensify the adventure,” says the centre’s operators, the SkiStar group, adding, “Troll tales bring our most beloved trolls to life, and along with the popular snowman Valle, exciting stories will be presented at locations such as Trollkyrkan, where the Rapptrollen will offer a musical experience, or with Dasstrollen Orvar and Svea.” Access to Trollskogen and the top restaurant nearby has also been improved ahead of the coming ski season, with a new weather-proof lift from the square.

OPEN AIR GONDOLA

Visitors to La Plagne are able to travel above its highest terrain standing in a gondola that is open to the elements – with no glass walls. Instead, passengers are roped into the cabin on the ride from Roche de Mio (2,739m) to the top at 3,080m. Marketed under the name 'AÉROLIVE' and as 'unique in the world', the activity is offered with two cabins on the lift, named "L'ACROBATE" (Acrobat) and "LA FUNAMBULE" (Tightrope walker) created without glass to provide "an exceptional unobstructed panoramic view." Participants are advised to ensure phones and cameras are tied to them with straps, too. A growing number of ski resorts (including Dachstein, Tignes, Snowbird and Zermatt) are also offering the chance to ride up their mountains on open-air 'balconies' created on the roofs of cable cars.

HIGHEST BASE JUMP

Brit Joshua Bregmen, 34, has set a new world record after skiing off Mera Peak in the Himalayas to complete the world’s highest altitude ski-BASE jump. Josh took off from a 5,716m-high cliff and parachuted to the ground, easily breaking the old record of 4,359m set by Frenchman Matthias Giraud in 2019. Josh spent two weeks acclimatising and searching for the right spot to make the jump and in the end had to move boulders and shovel snow at the high altitude to create a runway for the jump.

“The dream was to do several nice S-turns and ski elegantly off the cliff, but in reality, all we had was just a humble rock-filled runway at an exit height of nearly 6,000m,” said Josh.

The ski season is already underway, but what awaits us in terms of world-class competition, key season dates and laughing and dancing at music and comedy festivals in the snow?

2024 / 25 SEASON DATES

The good news is that Christmas and New Year days fall conveniently on Wednesdays this winter, so there’s none of the travel hassles that are likely to occur when they fall on changeover day at the weekend.

“January will be quieter and is low season in France for the five weeks running from 4 January so including the first week of February too. With excellent snow and very low prices, it’s a good time to go for those who are not tied to school holidays,” says Xavier Schouller, boss of French ski holiday specialists Peak Retreats who adds, “For those wanting to ski in France, French and European holidays start on the 8th of February. French holidays last four weeks with three different regions having alternate two weeks. This means that the middle two weeks are always the busiest as they overlap two regions each. This year, the Paris area starts on the 15th, so we expect that week to be the busiest, especially since it is also the main UK week and part of the Netherlands too.”

Easter Sunday is at the late end of its range, though, not arriving until 20 April, 2025, meaning most schools will be on holiday the fortnight up to the Easter holiday weekend. That means the holidays will only start a few days later than last season, when Easter was three weeks earlier, but nonetheless some resorts and tour operators will have ended their seasons before Easter Sunday.

WORLD CLASS COMPETITION

With the Paris Summer Olympic Games behind us, the Winter Olympics are up next, but we have 18 months to wait until MilanCorina 2026. The IOC did also announce at Paris that the 2030 Winter Olympics will be in the French Alps and even that 2034 will be back in Utah, so at least Team GB can plan well ahead.

There’s plenty to look forward to with the various World Tours, including the FIS Park & Pipe and Freeski Tours, which already got started in New Zealand in late summer with Britain’s Mia Brookes starting off her campaign with a second place in the first competition of 2024/25.

For the planet’s best alpine skiers, the big event this season is the FIS Alpine Skiing World Championships. They take place every two years and Saalbach Hinterglemm are hosts for 2025 from 4-16 February. As the season progresses, though, all eyes are likely to be on American superstar Mikaela Shiffrin, already the most successful racer of all time with 97 World Cup wins as she heads towards becoming the first racer to pass the 100 victories mark. Meanwhile, the 2025 FIS Snowboard, Freestyle and Freeski World Championships are heading to St Moritz from 17-30 March.

In terms of new competitions, the Invictus Games are staging their first-ever winter sports edition in Vancouver and Whistler from February 8-16, 2025.

MUSIC & COMEDY FESTIVALS

Music festivals continue to play a big part of the ski season and most of the annual favourites are back for 2024/25, including the return of the British Snowboard and Freeski Championships for the first staging in the Alps since 2019. They’re heading to Mayrhofen in Austria from 29 March to 5 April, a resort that already hosts the Altitude Comedy Festival (24-28 March) and Snowbombing (7-12 April), so you could book in for three weeks of non-stop festivals there.

But the first big festival of the season comes to Les 2 Alpes in France with the seasonstarter Rise Festival from 7-14 December. That’s if you don’t count the three successive nights of gigs at Schladming in Austria from 6-8 December when Bryan Adams, Sting and Simply Red play on successive nights.

As usual, springtime sees the heaviest focus with Rock The Pistes in the Portes du Soleil from 16-22 March and the huge Tomorrowland Winter also back and taking over Alpe d’Huez with clashing dates from 15-22 March. In Les Arcs their Electronic Peak Festival of house, disco and techno music with an original theme this year: “La Montagne Aquatique” (the Aquatic Mountain) runs from 22-29 March. There are hundreds more festivals on the snow at this time of year of all shapes and sizes across the skiing world; in fact, it's now rare for any major resort not to have one.

GOING SOLO

WORDS : PATRICK THORNE

Solo ski holidays are rising in popularity, we’re told. That doesn’t mean ski holidays for singles as such, although solo ski travellers can indeed be singles. The growth area, though, is reported to be individual members of couples or families who want to go skiing, perhaps giving it a try for the first time, when their partner doesn’t.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has reported “a growing appetite for solo travel,” up 40 percent between 2022 and 2023, with “a significant proportion opting to join group tours,” while solo-holiday specialists Friendship Travel report that the demographic of the typical solo traveller also appears to be getting younger. It reports that it has seen a 12% year-on-year increase in the number of bookings for people aged between 30 to 50.

The company says it seems many millennials are taking the opportunity to experience new places and embark on

vibrant Andorran culture, and fun après-ski with an affordable price tag.”

Part of the package from most companies offering ski holidays for solo travellers is to ensure there are no extra costs associated with travelling on your own, with no singleroom supplements a marked attraction.

For those travelling solo on beginner group ski trips, in most cases, tour leaders work to keep the atmosphere fun, sociable, and stress-free and have a clear understanding of how it feels to take that first ski leap. Solo travellers join a ready-made group of fellow enthusiastic newbies joining organised ski lessons with everything covered.

Solos Holidays are offering ski beginners weeks in Arinsal, Andorra, departing 26 January and 9 March 2025, staying at the ski-in-ski-out 4* Yomo Patagonia hotel, with spa, sauna, and hammam on a half-board basis with wine, costs from £1,894 pp. This includes return flights and transfers, airport taxes, welcome drink, six-day lift pass, five

adventures that friends or family might not be so keen to try.

Specialist solo ski holiday operators like Solos Holidays and Friendship Travel are adapting their programmes this winter to cope with increased demand, while other non-specialist operators like Ski Weekends are also noting the trend and emphasising that they have the facilities and deals to attract solo travellers too.

“Solos is also keen to challenge the assumption that solo travel is purely for singles. Regardless of age, ability, circumstance, background, gender –there really is something for everyone –especially on our exciting learn-to-ski trips,” a company spokesperson said, noting that later-life ski adopters are increasingly common, adding,

“It’s not just for those who have grown up with the sport. Solos Holidays offer a transformative holiday to introduce the great sport of skiing, complete with delicious food,

days ski school for three hours, and an accompanying Solos tour leader.

Friendship Travel has three trips taking place this winter. Two will be based in classic French chalets in Alpe d’Huez (in January) or Les Deux Alpes (in March), or there’s the chance to visit the Norwegian resort Trysil in February.

“Friendship Travel takes the stress out of planning a ski holiday with chalet accommodation provided and ski passes and meals arranged all week – all guests have to do is focus on hitting the slopes, taking in the scenery, and enjoying the après bar scene,” a company spokesperson said, adding, “With ski trips for all abilities, both French trips offer half-day lessons throughout the week, while the Norway excursion allows you to ski alone or with fellow travellers – should you choose. Both options provide guests with the opportunity to create a ski trip truly catered to their needs.”

A GIANT SWING

A giant swing, La Bascule, has opened at the French ski resort of La Clusaz in the Aravis region, close to Lake Annecy and will operate in the winter too, so long as the weather is good. The swing, which can accommodate up to three users at a

NEW TRANSARC

A new Transarc lift opens in Les Arcs this winter after a full facelift. Linking Arc 1800 and the mountain tops, the new Transarc has a faster speed, higher capacity but lower electricity consumption than before. The new lift has more spacious 10-seat cabins and speed at a world-leading 7 metres/second for a journey time cut from 20 minutes to 13. At the mid-station, there’s a new mineral gallery with beautiful specimens.

time, safely strapped in, swings out over the mountain side above the famous ski town offering those riding it amazing views as well as the thrill of the ride. This new activity takes place at an altitude of 1,860m on the Balcon des Aravis terrace.

HAPPY SKI MUMS

Momtrends Media, which runs Momtrends.com and the Ski Moms Podcast and describes itself as “the largest online community of ski moms”, has carried out its first “Ski Moms’ Happiness Survey”. Responses from over 1,000 ski-loving mums across the United States found that ski resorts could do a lot more business if they improved facilities for families, with 94% saying they’d ski more often if there was access to affordable group lessons for their children.

Two levels of swing intensity are available with the most adventurous able to start their swing from a 90-degree tilt. It costs 20 EUR per person for one swing without the chairlift ride up to the swing’s location. The full swing experience takes about 6 minutes.

STEEPEST CABLE CAR

A spectacular new series of ultra-modern lifts will go into service at the classic Swiss resort of Mürren through the winter. All part of a massive upgrading project known as Schilthornbahn 20XX, it begins with the opening of the lower section, incorporating the new world’s steepest cable car ascent, on 13 December 2024. Then the upper section from Birg to the top of the mountain will open on 15 March 2025.

If you’re looking for a ski area where you say “Wow!” every time you look out of your window each morning, nowhere beats the stunning Swiss Jungfrau region. Dominated by the truly awesome Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains, it’s a place that British skiers have been drawn to for well over a century and summer tourists since long before that.

Encompassing two valleys, three mountain ranges and 211 kilometres of perfectly prepared pistes, the Jungfrau ski region is one of the largest in Switzerland and the world, with a huge variety of terrain and a big vertical opening up many glorious long descents, all with that amazing backdrop of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau mountains.

But this ski region offers so much more besides, exciting terrain parks, brilliant beginner runs, perfect powder for freeriders and many other attractions besides. What's more, although long-term fans of the Jungfrau love its wonderful historic mountain railway system for getting about, which immediately takes you back to the pioneering years of skiing, hundreds of millions of pounds have been spent in recent years creating a stunning new system of comfortable, high-speed, high-capacity gondola lifts to whisk you up into the heart of it all.

The picture-perfect mountain village of Grindelwald lies at the heart of it all, providing stressless access to all corners of the vast Jungfrau ski region thanks to its choice of three gondolas, including the state-of-the-art EigerExpress, one of the best ski lifts you’ll ever ride! This whisks you in just 15 minutes directly up to the slopes in the Grindelwald - Wengen ski area. Every gondola cabin has 26 seats and they are even heated for maximum space and comfort. During the gondola ride, you also float right next to the famous north face of the Eiger. One of the big draws for experienced skiers here is the piste where the famous Lauberhorn World

Cup ski run is staged each January. You can ski it yourself, if you dare, outside the race period. Fast lifts also take you straight to the GrindelwaldFirst, Top of Adventure ski and snow fun area. Top of Adventure is not only a wonderland for freeskiers but is also home to a remarkable selection of adrenaline and pure fun activities to enjoy as an alternative to skiing or riding.

To begin with there's the thrilling First cliff walk which provides some of the best views yet of those 4,000m peaks and if you have the nerve the First View platform hanging over a cliff edge opens up nine different vistas of the surrounding mountainscape. You can even get airborne and ride through the air at up to 84kph on the 800m long First Flyer, or soar like an eagle on the First glider lying face down with up to three friends as you whizz down above the slope – and all this is included in your Jungfrauregion Ski Pass. If all that weren’t enough, amazingly, the world's longest toboggan run of 15km starts here.

Back on your skis or board, the Grindelwald-First snowpack has been designed and is supervised by no lesser person than the great Gian Simmen, the first Olympic Halfpipe Champion! Not just for experts like Gian, though, the park offers different levels of challenge for freestylers, including those just honing their skills, but including a 130-metre half pipe where you can practise your tricks.

Grindelwald-First is also home to one of the Jungfrau's two areas that are designed especially for families and children. The Lily Fun Slope here has lots of fun obstacles for kids to navigate and ski through.

For an amazing ski holiday in one of the most beautiful destinations on earth, with lots of extra and in some cases unique activities to enjoy and wonderful fast gondola lifts to access it all too from the perfect Alpine village of Grindelwald you can book your ski holiday now with any of the Jungfrau region’s many travel partners.

Les Menuires sits at the heart of Les 3 Vallées, the world’s largest ski area, with 600km of slopes. With almost all of the resort’s accommodation ski-in/ski-out and 85% of this vast ski area in a snow-sure location above 1,800m, it’s a winter playground like no other, offering simply the best of the French mountains. Les Menuires has been championing the idea of “excellent and accessible” skiing for 60 years. This is why the resort offers a mix of high-end 4★ hotels and budget-friendly tourist residences.

This year, it has even cut prices for families

buying lift passes together and increased the age by which children qualify for child prices right up to 17 inclusive. With the new Family Flex pass, you get a day of free skiing in the world’s largest ski area with the purchase of a ski pass for six or more consecutive days. It makes prices actually lower than last winter; what a nice surprise! Families can be any combination of generations and genders with a minimum of three members including one or two adults. Snow is guaranteed too, as this is not only a high-altitude resort with the slopes climbing to over 3,200m above, but 52% of the huge

area is covered by snowmaking machines, ensuring optimal snow coverage.

Les Menuires is not only easy on your wallet, but it is also easy on your legs, as it’s a fully integrated resort with everything steps away from your accommodation. The resort is designed so that almost all accommodations are ski-in/ski-out with pedestrian paths or free shuttles linking the different neighbourhoods.

This winter, make your life easier and pay less by booking your holiday in snow-sure, affordable, family-friendly and functionally designed ski-in/ski-out Les Menuires now!

QUAD UPGRADED

Jackson Hole’s first-ever quad chairlift, Sublette (or "Subby" to its powder day friends), has been upgraded to a state-ofthe-art fast new lift for the coming winter. The famous Wyoming ski resort say they are sticking to a quad chairlift, but the new Subby will whizz up the slopes in just four minutes, compared to the 11 minutes of its fixed-grip predecessor. Subby accesses intermediate and expert terrain located below the resort's famous cable car.

NEW WELLNESS CENTRE

Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, below Les Menuires in Les 3 Vallées, will unveil a new wellness facility this winter, La Belle Vie. Built around a panoramic aqua-play area that blends in with the surrounding natural landscape, there are three pools: an indoor fun pool with waterfalls and jets, a 20m outdoor pool (summer only), and a 34°C indoor/outdoor pool, adult-only and accessible all year round, as well as herbal saunas, steam rooms, massage rooms and a relaxation room.

SKI PLUS CITY PASS Innsbruck

Innsbruck is a different kind of ski holiday destination to most, and it’s one that most skiers quickly fall in love with.

This amazing destination at the heart of the Alps combines one of the most beautiful cities in Europe with incredible skiing. The high-value SKI plus CITY pass provides access to a dozen ski centres located around the city and public transport to them.

Not only that but you can also use your SKI plus CITY pass at 22 other attractions and a swimming pool in the greater Innsbruck area.

One moment you might be sitting in a street cafe with a view of the wonderful

medieval buildings of Innsbruck’s Old Town, then less than half an hour later you can be skiing the slopes at more than 2,000m above sea level. There’s no other pass like it worldwide!

The pass includes slopes for all abilities, even runs used by the world’s best on the multiple occasions Innsbruck has hosted the Winter Olympics, as well as the snowsure glacier slopes of the Stubai Valley.

Of course, you don’t have to ski. Innsbruck offers a vast choice of attractions to visit, from museums, galleries and historic buildings to winter hiking paths and

toboggan runs. Visit in the month before Christmas to enjoy several different magical Advent markets too.

In the evening, you could be dining at one of the city’s hundreds of fabulous restaurants then dancing in one of the popular clubs in the trendy student quarter. And it’s all so easy to reach by road, rail or the airport on the edge of the city – so no long transfers either.

Innsbruck is a unique urban-alpine region with a huge outdoor focus. It’s great to be outdoors. Learn more about the Innsbruck region: innsbruck.info/en/sport/winter

WHERE YOU BELONG

Photographer: Laura Szanto
BY PATRICK THORNE

We’re all excitedly planning our 2024/25 ski season trips, but the season has actually already started. With fresh snow falling in early September, empty slopes, cheap flights, and some resorts running autumn ski festivals, some skiers and boarders are asking, why wait? This year you could even beat the introduction of the EU’s new travel visa scheme, currently scheduled for 10 November.

It’s true, of course, that there’s not much open this early in the season and that resorts that are open won’t be able to offer much terrain yet, but that doesn’t detract from the excitement of being one of the first on the slopes this season and perhaps testing out the new 2025 ski gear before everyone else.

So, who is open already or opening soon?

AUSTRIA

Austria leads the way when it comes to autumn skiing, with more than half of the areas open in the northern hemisphere in September located here. This autumn, the ski season got a boost with snow down to low elevations and over a foot on high slopes in the final weeks of summer. Six glacier resorts aimed to be open by the first weekend of October, so you should currently be able to choose from the Hintertux, Kaunertal, Kitzsteinhorn (near Kaprun and Zell am See), Pitztal, Sölden, and Stubai (near Innsbruck) glaciers. Those wanting to test new season gear, get back in a terrain park, or just have a beer should note most of these areas stage long-weekend October fests with new-season kit to try and big beer tents while unveiling their autumn terrain park setups.

FINLAND

Finland’s Ruka and Levi ski resorts open at the start of October each year, thanks to a huge snow farming effort which sees massive piles of snow stockpiled through the summer then spread back out on the slopes in early autumn as temperatures drop. They both create a few kilometres of slopes with this, and last autumn there was already a good natural fresh snowfall on top by mid-October. Elsewhere in Scandinavia, the Galdhøpiggen summer ski area in Norway should be open, and Sweden’s Kåbdalis and Tärnaby aim to open in late October.

ITALY

Italy’s Passo Stelvio summer ski area, where many famous ski racers train in the off-season, has been open since May and plans to remain so until early November. The plan for yearround access to Zermatt’s glacier from Cervinia in Switzerland appears to have been quietly dropped, but the connection is due to be reinstated from October 26th. Sulden am Ortler, which has lifts up to 3250m, usually opens in late October or early November.

SWITZERLAND

Saas Fee is kind of the first area in the world to start its season, in July, after a threemonth closure. It joins year-round Zermatt, which has Europe’s highest slopes. Other Swiss centres opening in October or early November, conditions permitting, can include the Diavolezza glacier near St. Moritz and Glacier 3000 near Gstaad, then Andermatt’s Gemsstock, Crans Montana, Davos, Engelberg, Grimentz, Grindelwald, Vercorin, and high slopes above Verbier.

NORTH AMERICA

There’s an unofficial contest each winter to be first to open in North America, often won by a high ski area in Colorado, where snowmaking is already underway, although occasionally by centres in California, Vermont, or even the Midwest. In terms of official opening dates, Mt. Norquay near Banff has announced the earliest so far, 1 November, with nearby Sunshine and Lake Louise due to join it a week later as US resorts like Breckenridge and Mammoth aim to open.

INDOORS OR DRY SLOPE?

Of course, you can always freshen up your ski legs on one of the UK’s 60+ dry slopes or the five indoor snow centres in England. You could also take an indoor ski holiday with a growing number of larger indoor snow centres in Europe having on-site hotels. Check out Sno near Oslo (snooslo.no) in Norway with its 500m indoor slope or the SnowWorld Group (snowworld.com/ en) with centres in Belgium, France, Germany, and The Netherlands. All are closer than the Alps, and some even offer green ski holidays as their centres are 100% green energy powered.

A huge crane, claimed to be the world’s largest and most powerful, has been transported to the mountains of Saudi Arabia to assist with construction of the country’s first ski resort. Trojena was first announced in 2022 and officially chosen to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games shortly afterwards

CRANS-MONTANA SOLD

Vail Resorts have announced that they’ve completed the purchase of CransMontana, their second Swiss resort, joining Andermatt on their Epic Pass global season ticket. The company now own almost 50 ski areas in North America, Switzerland and Australia. Vail Resorts acquired an 84% ownership stake in Crans-Montana’s lift company for CHF118.5m and says it plans to invest approximately CHF30m over the next five years in improvements.

and before construction had begun. The 150-tonne crane is reported to have taken 50 engineers 10 days to assemble. Part of a planned futuristic carbon-neutral $1.5 trillion mega-city known as Neom, Trojena is being built in Saudi Arabia’s Sarawat Mountains, which occasionally see subzero

SOLD TO LOCALS

Killington, the largest ski area in the Eastern US, has bucked the trend of recent decades by being sold from one of the big multi-resort owner group to locals. Normally it’s the other way round. “We are being sold to a passionate group of local passholders. Our focus will be community engagement, sustainability, and making the Beast of the East even better for all of you,” a Killington spokesperson said.

temperatures for brief periods in winter. Trojena will offer year-round skiing on 36km of slopes thanks to snowmaking and dry ski slope surfaces beneath. Global hotel chains have announced plans to open hotels at Trojena including Ritz Carlton, W, Chedi, Raffles and Marriott.

WHISTLER’S NEW QUAD

Whistler’s Jersey Cream Express is being upgraded from a quad chairlift to a 6-seater in time for North America’s largest resort’s opening day in less than two months’ time. Construction is reported to be in the final stages with completion targeted in time for Opening Day on 22 November 2024. It will significantly reduce wait times, improve circulation on-mountain, and increase uphill capacity to the popular Glacier Creek Zone on Blackcomb Mountain.

BACK ON THE SLOPES

Ski holiday companies and resorts are keen to attract “returners” …skiers who, for one reason or another, have lapsed from diligently returning to the mountains each winter. We booked Georgia her first week on the slopes in a decade, to see if she’d feel glad to be back.

Those of us who hit the slopes for at least one week a season are well acquainted with that joyful feeling when embarking on our first run of a ski holiday. We rarely doubt we’ll lack the muscle memory and co-ordination to glide down to the bottom of the next chairlift. But after a decade without battling into a pair of ski boots, I felt

some trepidation as I headed to Val d’Isère with my friend Alexander, an experienced skier, with the goal of re-kindling my childhood love of sliding on snow. We landed in Geneva on a fresh Sunday morning, avoiding the Saturday crowds to help keep travel stress to a minimum, and three hours later, after a scenic

bus transfer, we were welcomed by our lovely hosts Kane and Vanessa at VIP Ski’s Chalet No.1 Bellevarde for the week. The first decision on arrival was whether to relax in the hot tub or enjoy an oncall massage, so I quickly forgot any nerves about skiing and just enjoyed the pampering. After an evening relaxing in the hot tub, then enjoying the local wine and an excellent meal from Kane and Vanessa, I felt fully primed for my skiing comeback!

Next morning, a cloudy sky and gentle precipitation presented less than ideal visibility for my return to the slopes; however, starting at an altitude of 1850m the snow was perfect.

Chalet No.1 Bellevarde is next to the Santons run that goes to the base, and admittedly when we reached the top of the first run, however, I experienced a moment where my legs turned to jelly and suddenly the years of ski-school lessons evaporated from memory. After a moment’s hesitation I regained my fortitude, pulled myself together and before I knew it, I was gliding down the first run for over ten years. I reached the bottom of the slope exhilarated, and to my surprise no fatalities picked up along the way! Feeling triumphant, I found myself chomping at the bit for another go. Even I was astonished as to how quickly the skills and co-ordination returned after such a lengthy absence. There are little things in life that serve to live up to the expectation of nostalgia. To my awe I could not differentiate the magic and excitement that skiing brought to me as a child with that of an adult. We perused these beginner runs a few times, which were truly invaluable for re-growing my

confidence as well as re-honing my skills. Next, we decided to take the gondola up to the Solaise bowl (2,560m) where a plethora of long, generous green and blue runs were waiting. This proved the perfect spot to regain long-under-used ski legs, offering near perfect conditions as we broke through the low cloud and into the warm sunshine. I was actually returning to skiing for the first time since childhood, so after a successful first day skiing, the term “après ski” had a new meaning. We returned to base and enjoyed a dance and drink or two at Cocorico. Then when we finally tired of old school anthems and I couldn’t convince Alexander to stay for “one more song!” we returned to the chalet using VIP’s handy on-call shuttle service to enjoy yet another perfectly prepared dinner.

As my confidence on snow had quickly returned, we decided to venture further next day, taking the swift Olympique gondola. This was my choice, partly as it not only provided access to more fabulous terrain, but also took us to La Folie Douce, and we were soon kicking our skis off again and exploring the world-renowned party atmosphere there. Once the sort of place I would find incredulous as a child (“Why would you want to pause a day’s skiing to dance on a table with a glass (or two) of fizz?”), it’s safe to say that in my mid-twenties, I found the appeal much more inviting! After a couple of hours there, we skied a few enjoyable blues to the base of La Daille, this time using one of the regular free shuttle buses provided by the resort to make it back to our chalet.

We enjoyed fabulous food all week at VIP Ski’s Chalet No.1 Bellevarde and

when our excellent hosts took a welldeserved evening off, we also enjoyed Val’s profusion of restaurants where fondues, steakhouses and a multitude of other cuisines await an empty stomach. We particularly enjoyed La Garage’s rustic apparel and hearty menu. As a converted mechanics, it was the prime place to re-fuel after a day on the mountain. And of course, post dinner, it would have been rude not to have stopped in a bar or two on our return trip to bask in the vibrant nightlife.

The last few days were spent exploring as much of Val D’isere’s slopes as we could and hopping on many of the 90 lifts that service them. My skills on snow returned quickly and we even spent a day traversing over to Tignes, the two linked resorts offering 300km of diverse skiing for all abilities between them.

A slightly more mournful atmosphere was felt on our departure as we embarked upon our return journey. I’m now determined that it won’t be another 10 years before I get on the slopes again and instead that I’ll be joining the million plus Brits that return to the slopes every ski season!

Georgia and Alexander stayed for 7 nights at No.1 Bellevarde, which costs from £1060pp based on two sharing. Price includes a scheduled coach transfer from Geneva Airport and catered accommodation but excludes flights. For more information about VIP SKI, please visit: vip-chalets.com

ON-DEMAND GONDOLA

SNOWDOME’S BIG 3-0

One of the world’s original indoor snow centres, and one of the longest surviving, the SnowDome at Tamworth, is celebrating its 30th year of operation in 2024. As part of the celebrations, it threw a ‘Dirty 30 Party’ earlier this month, with a 90s retro theme. Indoor snow centres in various forms have been around since the 1920s, but the Tamworth facility claims to be the first in the world to use real snow.

about the gondola is that it’s the world's first fully automatic on-demand lift with the technology behind it developed specifically for LAAX. With the resort’s eco priorities, it is also exceptionally energy efficient, and with cabins only going into service as required rather than constantly circulating,

DRY SLOPE CLOSED

The charitable trust that ran Folkestone Ski Centre and other sports facilities in the town has appointed administrators. In a public announcement, the trustees blamed “the current national and indeed worldwide situation” for a “dramatic increase in costs” while at the same time having a decline in income, as “many people struggle with their own finances.” The local MP is reported to be looking for ways to save the facilities.

it requires less power too. The first two sections (Flims-Foppa and Foppa-Startgels) went into operation in winter 2023/24. Two further sections (Startgels-Segnes and Segnes-Nagens Sura) will open this winter 2024/25. The fifth and final SegnesCassons section will follow next summer.

WORLD’S LARGEST SKI POLE

“The World’s Largest Ski Pole” has been reinstalled following its latest refurbishment in the New Hampshire ski town of North Conway. The shop’s site is now a restaurant, but the sign, previously restored in 2019 after it was blown over in a storm, remains.

SUPERB SPANISH SNOW AT BAQUEIRA BERET

BAQUEIRA.ES/EN

Spain’s leading resort, Baqueira Beret, is a winter wonderland that’s quick and easy to reach from the UK.

One of the largest resorts in the Pyrenees, it’s located by Val d’Aran, an area with a rich cultural heritage and a reputation for wonderful gastronomy.

Baqueira Beret is also famed for its perfect powder snow, which provides epic freeriding opportunities (it’s one of the few regular stops on the Freeride World Tour).

The majority of slopes are on the Atlanticfacing side of the mountains, guaranteeing decent amounts of high-quality snow.

The resort is spread across four distinctive areas: Baqueira, Beret, Bonaigua and Baciver. All in all, it covers 2,273 hectares, with 114 pistes to choose from, adding up to an impressive 170km of routes. Lifts start from 1,110m altitude and climb up 1,500 vertical metres to the highest at 2,610m at Cap de Baciver. Altogether, there are 17 black runs, 49 red, 43 blue, and five green runs, as well as three off-piste routes, so everyone can be very happy here, from complete beginners, through families and

recreational skiers, to the most determined powder hounds.

That said, freeriders are particularly in their element here, with 237 mountain itineraries to enjoy, offering 40,000 vertical metres of descent between them, and you can even book heli-ski trips.

Families will find dedicated snowparks for children, including Baby Baqueira 1500 for ages 6 months to 3 years, and Baby Baqueira for ages 3 to 6. Kids can enjoy games and ski lessons in these exclusive snow areas.

Baqueira Beret is much more than its amazing skiing, though. Over six decades, it’s grown into a full-service resort with fantastic dining options, loads to do off the slopes, and amazing accommodation options from budget-friendly to super-lux, and it’s all very easy to reach.

It’s also all part of the wonderful, natural Val d’Aran, which provides many more engaging and enticing opportunities to get closer to the natural world and enjoy its many benefits.

Learn even more about Baqueira Beret over the page 

THE FOUR "B"S OF BAQUEIRA

It all started back in 1964, when the first sector, Baqueira, was developed. This remains the centre of the resort, located at 1,500m at the foot of the slopes with a hub of hotels and services, and remains the most popular sector, blending nostalgia, modernity and easy access to the slopes. With its 33 runs covering 37.3 km, 93% of them with snowmaking cover, many think it’s also the largest of the four sectors, but it isn’t, quite. Great runs here include Luis Arias (named after the famous Spanish ski racer who started it all), Pales der Arias, and Tubo Nere, with Passarells considered the most challenging in the entire resort. There’s also Tamarro, a recently revamped challenging 2.3km red run, and the Escornacabres, a legendary off-piste run. The second of the four sectors making up

the resort, Pla de Beret, has the most varied terrain and is also the largest of all, with 41 slopes, the majority of them lovely cruising blues, spread over 74km – twice the size of Baqueira. It’s got a relaxed, laidback vibe making it ideal for families with children and also a top choice for freestylers who love Beret’s snowpark, boardercross, and funpark, as well as the Audi Ski Kronos. There are special learning zones for beginners as well. This is also where cross-country skiers can head to access 7km of tracks, and there’s also dog-sledding and sleigh rides offered in the area. Beret has seen significant investment in recent seasons, including several fast, comfortable new six-seat chairlifts.

The third sector, Bonaigua, was added in 1988 and has its own character and, in contrast to Beret, the most black runs in the whole resort – eight of them, to be precise. There are easier runs and even beginner slopes here too, though. After arriving on easy trails through Argulls, the descent

towards Bonaigua and all of Peülla offers many exciting descent options. There are 38 skiable kilometres in the sector, with highlights among the 29 runs including Barranc der Aire, the Gerber run, and the new Barqueta red run down to Argulls. The final sector, Baciver, formerly only accessible to ski mountaineers, is home to the resort’s highest point up to 2,610m. It’s the smallest of the four, with just 15.9km of runs, suited to good skiers as the 11 pistes are all reds and blacks. Besides exciting terrain and great snow, they’re rewarded by some of the resort’s best views towards the vast faces of Baqueira’s Cara Nord. The Eth Coret trail is a particular favourite here, winding through the trees.

THE VAL D’ARAN

The history, culture, beauty and heritage of the Val d’Aran, the region where

Baqueira Beret is located, help make the resort particularly special. Between the mountains, you’ll find stunning vistas, taking in forests, frozen waterfalls, hot springs, and more than 200 lakes! It’s an unspoiled natural wonderland, home to eagles, bears and vultures, and a wonderful place for winter hiking, snowshoeing excursions, or even horse riding or mountain biking over snow.

The region has its own unique culture, the true essence of the Pyrenees, and even its own language. Along with stunning scenery, you’ll find many historic buildings reflecting the region’s rich heritage and museums, where you can find out more. Some of these are now fantastic restaurants, delivering the region’s famously rich gastronomy, while others provide unique accommodation options. There are more than 200 restaurants to choose from in the region, of which 25 restaurants, bars and cafés are located on the ski slopes. Most serve locally

sourced ingredients, with more than 30 products registered as officially originating only in the Val d’Aran. These include caviar, honey, cheese and yoghurt. Look out for the Caviar Gastronomic Days if you visit in March!

BOOKING & ARRIVING

Viajes Baqueira Beret is the ski resort’s official travel agent, specialising in trips to Val d’Aran and Valls d’Àneu. Reservations staff have firsthand knowledge of all the accommodation and services on offer – hotels, apartments, self-catering and activities – so are able to create a tailored package to suit your needs.

It’s possible to book everything from accommodation to skiing lessons and snowmobile excursions. Viajes Baqueira Beret’s aim is to help plan your holiday and make sure you enjoy your trip to Val d’Aran

or neighbouring Valls d’Àneu to the max. Viajes de Baqueira Beret also provides its accommodation and ski pass customers free and exclusive services, such as ski pass delivery to your hotel, parking by the cable car parking so you can conveniently access the slopes, leaving your car in a covered area – great if you’ve driven down from the UK or picked up a rental car at the airport. Baqueira Beret is located in the Pyrenees, close to the French border, and is easy to reach with five airports close by. Choose from Lleida (145km), Pau (157km), Tarbes (161km), or Barcelona (350km) airports in Spain, or fly into Toulouse in France (166km). Bus services, taxis or hire cars can be used from there to the resort.

Austria’s Ski amadé region, located just 50km from easy-toreach Salzburg Airport, is one of the largest ski regions in the Alps, with 760km of perfectly groomed slopes, divided into 356 individual runs served by 270 lifts, spread across five ski regions and linking 25 ski villages.

But it’s important to realise that Ski amadé is much more than just a seamlessly inter-connected lift pass; it’s your key to a perfect ski holiday in many more areas too! To begin with, on top of the incredible range of downhill skiing, there are lots more experiences to be had. That could be freestyling in the 10 snowparks or just having a ball on the 13 fun slopes and funcross trails, speed-measuring routes or following the local gourmet tours.

NEW BC TERRAIN

Whitewater Ski Resort in British Columbia has announced that it’ll be adding 60 acres of inbound terrain this winter. “This addition ensures that Whitewater continues to deliver unparalleled adventures as it enhances our unique blend of challenging steeps and gladed trees,” a resort spokesperson said. The latest expansion comes on the back of a new quad chairlift last season, which brought 123 new acres of fresh terrain and increased vertical to the ski resort.

visionary in freestyle skiing, known for his creativity and for regularly executing novel stunts that push the boundaries of what’s thought possible. The innovative concept involves the loop's top being removed, creating a 3m-long gap. Reflecting on the complexity and thrill of the feat, Tjäder said, “I’ve been thinking about this since 2016, so it feels fantastic to finally have completed it. It was both easier and harder than I thought. I didn't expect to slide out so many times on the landing, so that was the toughest part.”

CROWDFUNDED GONDOLA

A new gondola with 10-person cabins will go into service at Austria’s Fieberbrunn ski area this winter. Unusually, crowdfunding was used to part-finance the new lift, capitalising on the “emotional attachment” skiers have to the famous red cabins of the former lifts. Over 200 people decided to contribute, raising around €600,000. The new Streubodenbahn replaces the 33-year-old Streuboden and Lärchfilkogel lifts, increasing capacity and cutting ascent time to 8.5 minutes.

EXTREME WEATHER

A number of alpine resorts were damaged by flooding in violent storms this year. French resorts Risoul and Les 2 Alpes were among those impacted, with Switzerland’s Saas-Fee cut off and nearby Zermatt also damaged. In Austria, flash flooding in St Anton got wide media coverage with video footage of cars washed down streets and damaged buildings. But resort teams worked fast to clean up and repair damage, and all are stressing its normal operations this winter.

If you want to feel that you are enjoying the very best ski holiday you could find anywhere, one you’ll always remember for all the right reasons, Austria is the place to be.

Of course, you want fabulous skiing, something for everyone and reliable snow, but the fast, comfortable modern lifts that Austrian ski areas are famous for really add to the pleasure. Then there are the strict building controls that mean Austrian ski areas are picture-perfect collections of Alpine chalets, with a backdrop of forest and stunning mountain scenery. There’s a vast range of accommodation, fabulous family facilities and loads to do off the slopes so that even non-skiers in the party will be very happy.

What takes Austrian ski holidays to the next level is the fabulous food we fuel up on in the Alps. Nowhere does mountain cuisine better than Austria, where there are now numerous gourmet-rated restaurants and winter food festivals that celebrate the thousands of warm, welcoming mountain huts that have been serving up great food for generations in the Austrian Alps. Knowing you’ve got everything right and

are in the best place for your perfect ski holiday is a state of being that the Austrians call ‘Lebensgefühl’, which means the kind of ski holiday perfection that we all need!

Finally, the Sonnenburg family restaurant serves up delicious pizzas straight from the stone oven.

ST. JOHANN IN SALZBURG

St. Johann in Salzburg is one of the closest ski areas to the provincial capital, lying just 37 miles to the north, but you’ll feel you are a world away in this relaxed small town with its family-friendly atmosphere and beautiful natural environment. Skiers will delight in the 210km of slopes in Snow Space Salzburg, which links St. Johann to neighbouring villages and is just a part of the larger Ski amadé regional pass. The

resort is home to the high-altitude village of Alpendorf, which offers ski-in/ski-out holidays where you click into your skis right outside your hotel door.

The mountains are full of warm, cosy huts where you’ll find a hearty welcome from local families who also grow or source their ingredients locally. Pastries, or ‘pofesen’, are a particular speciality of the region, and you should definitely treat yourself to a hearty slice of Sachertorte during your visit.

You can take a winter hut hike to sample the food at several of them, or of course ski between them, too. There are many great ski huts dotted around the slopes with the Kreistenalm Oberforsthofalm, Gernkogel, Buchauhütte and Gut Berg Stadl among the most popular.

SKI JUWEL ALPBACHTAL WILDSCHÖNAU

The family-friendly Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski region in the heart of Tirol is a beautiful, unspoilt corner of the Austrian Alps with a special focus on families. The Ski Juwel was created by the connection of the neighbouring Alpbachtal

and Wildschönau valleys, both home to picturesque, unspoilt villages and fabulous natural environments, creating 113km of varied piste for all abilities. There are 25 cosy huts on the slopes, offering traditional, authentic dining. Ingredients are locally sourced and usually produced by the hut owner, the recipes are traditional and the portions are hearty. Regional classics such as "Knödel" (dumplings) and "Spätzle" (cheese noodles) are popular, as are pretzel soup and "Kaiserschmarren" (pan-fried pancakes).

Top choices include the Gipföhit am Schatzberg, a modern yet rustic mountain guesthouse where specialities include organic beef and pretzel soup. Another cosy hut, Norderbergalm on the Markbachjoch, is close to the toboggan run down to Niederau, so that could be a way back after your meal! The Böglalm has a sunny terrace and is famed for its delicious Kaiserschmarren, made in a giant pan. A visit to the top of Alpbach (pictured on the first page) where there’s a 360° View Tower at the highest point of the ski resort is another must visit. Finally, the Berggasthof Hornboden ski hut is located right on the slopes and has a large terrace and chill-out area.

BIGGEST INDOOR SNOWHALL

The new world’s largest indoor snow centre has opened in China. L*SNOW in Shanghai has 90,000sqm of indoor snow space (about 23 football fields’ worth), overtaking the previous largest, also in China in the northerly city of Harbin. The centre, where lifts include an indoor

MÉRIBEL’S UPGRADE

Méribel Centre is continuing its work to improve its Snow Front area to make it easier to navigate with improved facilities for the upcoming 2024/25 winter season. The latest redevelopment of the Chaudanne snow front follows improvements made ahead of the 2023 Alpine Skiing World Championships Méribel, jointly hosted with neighbouring Courchevel. The new features, designed for beginners, children and families, include a free, protected area and a dedicated sledging zone.

8-seater chairlift, also has the world’s biggest indoor vertical at 100m and hopes to hold international competitions on its steepest slope. Indoor snow is just part of the vast complex, which features ski-in/ski-out accommodation options. There’s a huge water park too, partly

SKI AGAINST VIOLENCE

As part of the annual Women’s Ski Week Program at Australia’s Hotham Alpine Resort, a special event dedicated to raising awareness and support for women suffering from domestic violence was staged. Set to become an annual event, the 'White Ribbon Run' provided a chance for the community, skiing and boarding with white ribbons, to show solidarity with victims of domestic violence and a commitment to supporting change.

THE BEST VIEW

Zell am See in Austria’s Salzburgerland has unveiled its new Kaiserblick viewing platform at the top station of the Schmittenhöhe cable car, at 2,000m, providing stunning views out over the resort and lake as well as more than 30 3,000m peaks, which, a resort spokesperson said, “you can get up close and personal with using a telescope.” The platform rises up to 30m above the mountainside below, and some sections have a glass floor.

ISPACE

t’s a growing complaint among longtime skiers that the slopes are more crowded than they used to be. With average annual skier numbers staying fairly static, it’s difficult to know if that’s really the case, or just a perception, but certainly, skiers in Europe’s most famous resorts have been noticing that even in the once quiet weeks of early January, runs can be crowded. It’s these larger resorts where skier visit numbers do keep creeping up, while less well-known, lower-lying centres with less reliable snow cover struggle for business.

In North America, where slopes are generally less crowded, resorts limited skier numbers at peak times during the COVID pandemic years, in order to guarantee social distancing. Now they’ve kept this practice on at some top resorts to prevent overcrowding and coincidentally encourage skiers to buy season passes early to ensure they can actually get on the slopes when they want to.

There are also ever more apps now that can provide live info on where the crowds are, so you can head for quieter slopes, as long as not everyone does the same thing as you anyway. The closest we’ve come to a full scientific measure of which ski areas, on average, get the least number of skiers on their slopes comes from the German ski writer and cartographer Chris Schrahe, who has looked at detailed measurements of ski area sizes and compared these with numbers of lift tickets sold and uplift capacity of lift systems, even going so far as meticulously measuring ski area dimensions using Google Earth rather than taking official stats at face value.

In an edition of his detailed analysis of the world’s 100 largest ski areas, last published several years ago now, Chris points to the Swiss resort Obersaxen as the least visited in Europe on average, with 1,280 visits through the season per kilometre of slopes.

It’s not an area many Brits know well, perhaps part of why it’s so quiet, but there are 120km of slopes here, 17 lifts, and a healthy 1,110m of vertical. It’s located about 50 miles south of Zurich as the crow flies, although double that by road or rail, on

the way up to better-known Andermatt.

In North America, Chris highlights Big Sky, one of the continent’s largest ski areas, as having plenty of space on its slopes normally, with an average of 1,918 skier visits per kilometre, and notes America’s largest resort, Park City, does pretty well too with 3,283 skier visits per kilometre of slopes.

Big Sky has long been aware just how much space its fabulous slopes offer and has used the fact for marketing.

“On average, we offer more than an acre per skier. There are times when I’m skiing at Big Sky and don’t see another person for the entire length of the trail - something I try to never take for granted!” says the resort’s PR Manager, Stacie Harris, adding, “And with our new chairlift investments, we’re able to move people quickly and efficiently around the mountain - which is why you’ll rarely wait in a lift queue.”

However, the ski slopes of Alberta and British Columbia, away from the biggest names, also score highly with BC’s Panorama, topping Chris’s annual report for several years running with the most space per skier.

Back in Europe, new ski awards launched by ski resort comparison website Snomad this autumn saw Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise win in the “Best Ski Resort for Quiet Slopes” category.

For those not in the know, Sainte-Foy sits on the Italian border between the Paradiski area of Les Arcs and La Plagne on one side and Tignes/Val d’Isère on the other. Its own ski area is modest by comparison to these giants but is famously quiet by comparison, with a bonus of lower lift pass prices than most.

Whatever the averages and the awards say though, you can still usually find space on the slopes if you plan carefully. That can mean avoiding famous resorts, except at the very start (pre-Christmas) or end (late March/April outside the Easter holidays) of the season. Another study calculated 74% of ski visits worldwide are generated by only 13% of ski resorts. Perhaps opt for one of the thousands of less well-known mid-sized destinations instead?

RECORD NOT ENDORSED

Japan’s Olympic Champion ski jumper Ryōyū Kobayashi has achieved a new world record ski jump of 191m, breaking the old record by a remarkable 37.5m; however the International Ski Federation (FIS) says it won’t be ‘official’ due to the jump’s circumstances. Jumping on

CABINS RESTORED

Les Carroz in the vast Grand Massif ski region decided on a new approach when restoring its 20-year-old Kédeuze gondola cabins. Rather than just scrap and replace them, the 66 cabins were transported 151km to be restored with lots of effort but minimal new parts. Around 20 technicians spent an average of 55 hours per cabin, stripping it down then replacing glass, seats and much more, lessening the environmental impact and at 20% of the new cost.

DAVOS KLOSTERS NEW PISTE

Switzerland’s famous Davos Klosters resort has been working on rewilding terrain between the Usser Isch and the Carjöl areas of their Jakobshorn ski area and has created a new piste there. The 2.5km run back down to Davos Platz relieves pressure on the Gämpen slope (largely a forest road) and the now defunct FIS Ischalp slalom run. The reforested area has returned 10,000sqm of the mountainside back to nature.

attempts. “This jump has been a dream of mine for a long time. I’ve always wanted to jump farther than anyone ever has, and I want to keep pushing the boundaries,” said Kobayashi, who has 32 wins and two World Cup titles plus gold and silver Olympic medals.

NO THIRD TIME LUCKY

Plans to launch the Alpine Skiing World Cup speed events with high-altitude crossborder races from Zermatt to Cervinia in early November won’t be attempted again, the FIS says. The new racecourse, the highest and longest and the first to cross an international border, was due to launch the 2022/23 season, but races were cancelled due to too little snow on the lower course, then last winter they were cancelled again for problems including too much snow.

The world’s largest ski area, Les 3 Vallées, already has everything going for it, but somehow it manages to keep getting better!

Easy to access from the UK by train, car, or plane, Les 3 Vallées has all the snow you need guaranteed, thanks to the fact that most of its terrain is high altitude. You can choose from different styles of resorts, with seven to pick from, serving this huge area with a world-beating 373 miles of slopes. You can opt for a purpose-designed highaltitude ski-in/out resort, or a traditional village oozing French ambience and equally well connected to the slopes by state-of-theart ski lifts. There are lots of different styles of accommodation to choose from too, with

something for all tastes and budgets. New for this winter, the famous “La Saulire” cable car is back after a three-year wait, now with comfortable cabins equipped with the latest lighting and sound technology. Following a €10 million upgrade, it offers stunning views of the breathtaking panoramas.

Also new is an ultra-modern complex at Caron 3200, including a brand-new restaurant, wine bar, observation terrace, and events space. Located at the top of gondolas arriving from Orelle and Val Thorens, there are fabulous 360° views, including Mont Blanc, with photo spots to help.

This winter also sees Orelle’s first hotel, “HOB Orelle”, a hotel-hostel hybrid,

opening near Orelle Gondola. Communal spaces include a lounge, bar, games area, restaurant, and a co-working space. There’s also a stunning new €17 million modern wellness and swimming centre, “La BelleVie”, opening at St Martin de Belleville, offering indoor and outdoor pools, a sauna, a jacuzzi, a herbal tea lounge, and an event space in a serene, calming, and modern setting. Whether you prefer relaxed skiing or pushing your limits, Les 3 Vallées offers all ski enthusiasts all the fun they can handle, gliding from one resort to another without ever taking their skis off, and all with just one incredible lift pass!

CONNECTION CELEBRATION

French ski area La Rosière and their Italian neighbour La Thuile are celebrating the 40th anniversary of their joint Espace San Bernardo ski area with its 154km of slopes this winter. Since 1984, this domain has offered snow-sports enthusiasts the opportunity to ski between the two countries, enjoying a rich diversity of landscapes and cultures. The Chardonnet chairlift, a key link in the France–Italy connection, has been replaced as part of the celebrations, with a better, faster lift. The old fixed three-seater chairlift has made way for a €9m detachable six-seater. “Previously, accessing Italy was challenging for some beginner skiers, as the route involved a single red (intermediate) run. With the new lift, skiers can now ride it downhill, making the descent more accessible,” a La Rosière spokesperson said.

SCHLADMING OPENING

Bryan Adams, Sting and Simply Red have been unveiled as the three headline acts for Austrian resort Schladming’s ‘Ski Opening - The Grand Festival’ to kick off the new season. Bryan Adams will open the series of concerts on Friday, 6 December. He will perform his hits as well as songs from his new album, which he wrote during the pandemic. Sting will then perform some of his hits with his new band on the Saturday 7 December. Simply Red's Mick Hucknall is celebrating his 40th stage anniversary and will be going on tour so fans can get a foretaste on 8 December in Schladming. Last year, Robbie Williams launched the season with two nights of concerts. Special packages including tickets and accommodation in the region are available directly from schladming-dachstein.at/skiopening

SLOPING ROOF

Bosnia’s Ravna Planina ski centre near 1984 Winter Olympic host city Sarajevo has announced plans to build an indoor ski run on one of their slopes. The resort, which was the first in the country to install a gondola, said it intends to build a 350m-long indoor ski slope, with a drop of 100 vertical metres and complete its construction by 2029. “In response to climate change, which significantly affects winter tourism, the idea emerged for a project that would enable year-round skiing, regardless of the season and weather conditions. The ski slope, snow park, cross-country skiing track, sledding area, and baby park will cover an area of 16,000 square meters,” a statement from the centre explains. The slope will be powered from renewable energy and will also include a snow park.

(C) 2017 LA ROSIERE TOURISME / PROPAGANDA
HARALD STEINER

It’s perhaps not something we want to think about too hard, but the past few decades have seen a quiet shift from the skiing up in the mountains we all know and love, to an ever-growing number of indoor snow centres appearing around the world.

Indoor snow centres with real snow have been with us for nearly four decades now, with the Tamworth Snowdome, one of the world’s oldest, still operating, celebrating 30 years this year. But more than 150 more have been built on six continents worldwide, meaning that millions of people are skiing indoors each year, many of them yet to ski outdoors!

At the same time, climate change coupled

with business realities is taking out more and more smaller, low-lying ski areas that were created in the latter half of the last century. With less reliable snow cover and soaring energy costs, it’s no longer viable for them to invest in the required lift upgrades, and it’s a vicious cycle of declining income and rising costs.

Indoor snow centres are getting ever bigger too. There’s a popular myth that Ski Dubai is the world’s biggest. It was one of the largest when it first opened nearly 20 years ago, but newer, bigger centres that have opened since have pushed it down towards 20th place. The new biggest, which opened in Shanghai last month,

has more than 20 football fields’ worth of indoor snow, around 100m of indoor vertical and the first indoor 8-seat chairlift, as well as an indoor gondola. These giant centres aren’t just places you visit for a few hours like a trip to the cinema or swimming pool either. They have ski-in/ ski-out chalets so you can enjoy a ski holiday day or night, 365 days a year. Big hotel and holiday brands like Marriott and Kempinski are getting involved, and Club Med has built a whole indoor ski resort in China, which it’s now in the process of extending to take the top spot on size away from Shanghai.

The switch from outdoors to indoors

is perhaps most marked in the warmer months when summer ski areas on Europe’s glaciers were the training grounds for the world’s best skiers and boarders ahead of the season. There were more than 40 of these operating in the 1980s and 1990s, but the 21st century has seen the numbers still open in summer dropping dramatically to just a dozen or so now, with much shorter summer seasons. Racers now train indoors much more, praising the reliable conditions. In perhaps a sign of things to come, a number of outdoor ski areas have toyed with the idea of putting roofs on parts of their slopes. Most famously, Tignes

suggested this but quietly dropped the idea. Bosnia’s Ravna Planina ski centre is the latest to say it’s going to build one. Of course, there is some irony that these giant freezers use huge amounts of energy and can be considered contributors to the climate change, like everything else, that’s leading to our outdoor snow disappearing. To be fair, most aren’t denying that and instead are doing something about it, if only to keep their energy costs low enough to stay viable. The Snow complex that opened near Oslo in Norway in 2020 is fully carbon neutral and even a net exporter of green energy to its neighbours. Some

German and Dutch centres have put so many solar panels on their vast roofs that they’ve gone carbon neutral too. So, yearround snow sports without damaging the environment much is possible. Is the future of skiing indoors? It’s too soon to say and it should be noted that while climate change is clearly an existential threat to traditional ski areas, they are battling back with techniques like snow farming, all-weather snowmaking and careful management of their snowpacks to get smarter at keeping the snow longer, some even managing to extend their seasons. For now, nothing is certain.

MARCEL HIRSCHER

Marcel Hirscher won a record eight consecutive World Cup titles, 11 Alpine Skiing World Championships medals (seven gold), four Olympic medals (two gold) and 67 World Cup races racing for Austria, leading to him being considered the greatest male ski racer of all time by many. Five years after retiring, he’s back this winter racing for his mother’s homeland, the Netherlands, and on skis developed by his own company.

Why race for the Netherlands?

MH Thanks to my mother, I am an Austrian-Dutch dual citizen, which made the best solution possible for everyone. As an Austrian skiing for the Netherlands, I don’t take resources away from young Austrian athletes, and, conversely, I might be able to contribute something to skiing and the ski youth here in Holland, as well as to the connection between both countries through winter tourism.

Is it a comeback?

MH A comeback for me is when someone – for example, after an injury break – wants to continue where they left off. My career has been over for five years, I am 35 years old, I have two children, two companies. Unlike before, now ski racing has to fit into my life – and not the other way around.

How are you feeling?

MH I am quite satisfied with my physical fitness. Strength and endurance training is much easier to integrate into everyday life. Of course, there’s a lot missing in skiing: in spring, I managed to get some snow training, but hardly any after that because it was too warm.

You’ll be racing on your own VAN DEER-Red Bull Sports equipment?

MH I always wondered what it would be like to race with my own, self-developed equipment. Until a few years ago, that was an illusory dream, and now it has become a reality.
