This winter there’s plenty to get excited about already though with the Winter Olympics coming up, new terrain opening in the Grand Massif and La Rosière ski areas in France, and a new black run announced at Cortina. There seem to be ever-more ski flight routes to choose from with easyJet and Jet2 among the main players, but also a bit of a transatlantic battle starting with Norwegian flying from London to Denver and other “low-cost” airlines moving into long haul and driving down prices with their competition. SKI AREA DECIDES TO DELAY OPENING DATE Alyeska Resort in Alaska, which typically posts one of the world’s biggest snowfall totals, has decided to open three weeks later than usual this winter, in mid-December rather than late November. The resort’s Marketing Director Eric Fullerton said the decision had been made due to “shifting weather patterns”, meaning that snow cover was unpredictable early in the season, despite the resort having spent millions on snowmaking in recent years.

New SnowboardING World Record Set
FREERIDE BY LEON BUTLER LeonButlerFreeride
Leon.Butler87
Snowboarder Keith Hayes has set a new world record for snowboarding the biggest vertical in 12 hours. The record was set last winter at Sun Peaks ski resort in British Columbia, Canada, but it took some time for Keith to receive his official confirmation and certification from the famous Guinness Book. Keith was supported by a team of 10 from the Winter Sports Company as he attempted and then set the new world record. It was an early start, and the chairlift started turning at 8am sharp – but conditions were perfect. After a week of heavy snowfall and

So far, Kitzbühel has come out fighting, actually extending its ski season to usually open some high terrain in late October each year using snow farming and clever snowmaking to open runs when most other areas can’t. World famous skiwear brand Colmar have continued their tradition of research and innovation to create another superb range of characterful clothing for on the slopes and off this season. This season Colmar are consolidating the guidelines they laid down in the previous year with exceptionally well designed items of fully functional sportswear the priority, based on years of research and continually improving performance. Alpine and freeski are the two macro areas of action of athletes and skiers who can count on a wardrobe full of ideas that can be layered and interchanged and of warm, waterproof, technical and extremely functional garments. This season more than ever, Colmar have been concentrating on research to create the best in skiwear. Key ingredients in this winter’s range are Teflon EcoElite and G+graphene materials which were first introduced to some items last season. In fact almost 90 per cent of the range is treated with the Teflon Eco-Elite finish which provides a very high level of waterproofing but is also highly sustainable because the treatment used is completely environment-friendly whilst also lasting three times longer than previous methods. With this great innovation thanks also to the application of G+graphene, Colmar continues its long history of research and evolution, creating a “back to the future” look in three classic jackets which have their design roots in the 1950s, 1980s and 1990s.

Brits who venture “across the Pond” to ski in North America tend to fall in love – with both the skiing and the overall holiday experience. There’s the draw of the “big country” when you fly west to find open roads and then open ski slopes waiting for you. It may be a cliché but everything seems bigger too – the rental car, the ski lift, the meals when you dine out. Even the cups of coffee are bigger, although sometimes that’s not such a good thing. Another thing North America has, most seasons at least, is snow. Lots and lots of light fluffy powder snow, which again is a cause of North American ski addiction among many Brits. The Western US and Canadian provinces of BC and Alberta are all famous for their light, floaty powder that really transforms the ski experience. The only downside of skiing North America is that it can cost a lot, especially since the pound fell in value against both the US and, to a lesser degree, Canadian dollars. This fall has been mostly blamed on Brexit, and it certainly hit a new low when the Brexit vote happened, but really it had been falling for a while before and hasn’t actually declined much more over the past year or so; in fact, if anything, it has recovered a little (at least, at time of writing!). general tips to help you understand how to get it right. On a typical ski tour you may find different types of snow, some of which are harder to ski than others. Ideally you should be confident with all types. The easiest to ski is probably “spring snow”, which freezes overnight and then the top couple of centimetres are softened by the sun, followed closely by powder snow on a hard base. you will find good powder conditions on all slopes, which will remain good for a while if the temperature stays cold. The north-facing slopes tend to keep the powder for longer periods whereas the sunny southfacing slopes will start to transform over time. Melt freeze will occur on slopes that face east, south and west, and this is where you will start to experience breakable crust… pretty nasty to ski!
