WHERE TO SKI & SNOWBOARD IN SEPTEMBER
S eptember is traditionally one of the quietest months in world skiing. There are around 6000 ski areas on the planet, but in
September many of the glacier ski areas in
the Alps have closed after their summer ski season, and the southern hemisphere’s ski
season is also drawing to a close, with most ZILLERTALTOURISMUSGMBH_AND_LEO HIMSL
of the 100 odd ski areas south of the Equator calling it a day by the end of the month. But at the same time there’s excitement building as summer draws to a close, and we really start looking forward to the ski season ahead. For most of us that means looking towards a ski trip in December at the earliest, but in fact there are places open this very day, or opening very soon, where you can get onto the slopes. There may even be fresh snow (it can fall any day of the year at the high altitudes concerned), and the ski centres are likely to be offering you the chance to demo 2015 season ski equipment. What’s for certain is that the slopes will be

FA M I LY SKIING J A P A N Back in the 20th century, very few Europeans skied in Japan. True, there was (and still is) a Club Med in Sahoro, but for most people – even if they knew you could ski in Japan – it was too far, too crowded, too expensive, and too incomprehensible. Then around a decade ago all that changed, thanks largely to Australians. As Australia’s economy boomed, Japan’s stalled, leading to something of a switcheroo in financial terms. Where once Japanese companies bought ski areas around the world (they once owned Tignes in France, Heavenly in the US, and Whistler Blackcomb in Canada) so the Aussies realised Japanese ski areas (and there are over 600 of them), were crying out for investment and skiers. In Hokkaido, Japan’s ”wild north” island, the surf-loving Aussies found the world’s best powder in terms of both quality and abundance, and a local population that wasn’t very interested in it, with the added bonus for Australians

Most organised is the Swiss resort of Adelboden, which offers enthusiastic igloo lovers the chance to build their own as part of an organised weekend in mid-March each season. Equipped with shovels and snow saws, the igloo builders set about creating the shelters in which they will spend the night. Building one yourself can be a bit primitive compared with the options listed above, but at least it’s the real deal, harking back to the days long before people had the idea of putting a hot tub in an igloo! South Tyrol ... Italy with a twist
South Tyrol is Italy at its best – with an added dash of Alpine influence. Discerning skiers enjoy guaranteed snow coverage on 90% of slopes, cosy huts very close by and an awe-inspiring backdrop of the Dolomites. Add to that, 300 days of sunshine a year, delicious food fusing Italian and alpine flavours and quality regional wines and it’s clear to see why South Tyrol really is Italy with a twist. www.suedtirol.info

EUROPE’S MOST EXPENSIVE TICKET GETS MORE EXPENSIVE
T he cost of a lift pass for the Zermatt International ski area, covering 360km of piste including Europe’s highest, and
those of Cervinia and Valtournenche over the Italian border, will rise for the first time in 4 years next winter, says the
famous Swiss resort. The average price increase will be 3.5%. A 6-day adult pass will cost CHF434 (currently around £290), which is believed to be substantially more than any other
European lift pass. This represents a rise of CHF11 (£7) during the main season from 29 November 2014–19 April 2015. A lift pass costing a lot less, but covering the same area, can be purchased more cheaply in Cervinia, but must be used first on the Italian side. A cheaper Zermatt-only pass is also available for those happy to stay on the Swiss side. Zermatt is encouraging guests to buy online in advance via matterhornparadise.ch/tickets. There’s no automatic online discount, but the resort says there will be limited time offers, with savings of up to 20% on standard rates, publicised on the site, and via the Zermatt Bergbahnen page on Facebook. Although the adult price may be Europe’s highest, child discounts at Zermatt are among Europe’s most generous, with children aged under 10 free of charge, and children aged 10–16 paying half-price, so overall family costs may work out cheaper than at other resorts where adult tickets cost less, but child tickets are more. The cost of buying lift tickets in several of Europe’s other top resorts will rise a little next season too, although the actual price difference is likely to be down to the strength of sterling more than any resort price rises. In France the 6-day adult Les 3 Vallées pass rises by just over 2%, from €277 to €283 in the main season – currently around £224. There are lower prices for individual sectors, and in low season weeks at the start and end of the season. Families and groups of two or three people buying tickets together also receive discounts. Children pay around 75% of the adult price (€228/£180) from age 5 for a Les 3 Vallées pass, and the full adult price from age 13. A 6-day adult Mont Blanc unlimited pass for the full region around Chamonix will be €285 (there are cheaper passes for smaller areas available), and an Espace Killy pass will be €260.
