1986

AND ALL THAT! Guest editor Arnie Wilson looks back at 30 years of Ski Solutions Now let me see - where was I skiing in 1986, when Ski Solutions was just starting up? I was certainly in Aspen, Colorado, among other resorts. I can even remember having breakfast at a quaint little café called the Little Nell. No, that’s not a misprint. Aspen’s now celebrated iconic Little Nell hotel wasn’t built - on the site of that popular breakfast spot - till 1989. By that time Ski Solutions had been spreading its wisdom to the skiing faithful for three years. And the Little Nell hotel still features very much in its programme. Its restaurants are superb, says the company’s North American specialist Clare Roberts, and she should know having just clocked up her 22nd year with the company (over 15,000 happy clients and counting!) Solutions was - and still is - the name of the game, and then as now, those who listened in 1986 could be sure their skiing holiday experience would be considerably enhanced and enriched by the expertise of a team who lived and breathed the mountains. From those early days, Ski Solutions, pioneered by Lizzie Norton, has grown apace and of course evolved into a larger ski tour operator, headed up these days by the ever cheerful (at least whenever I meet him) Craig Burton. 1986 was a very important year for me too. It was a case of out of the blue and into the pink. Completely unexpectedly, I was asked to be the Financial Times ski correspondent (as far as I know the paper’s first). For the next 15 years I wrote most of the skiing content for the pink ‘un, which included a crazy year of skiing every single day in 1994 in 240 ski resorts in 13 countries. I guess you could say that skiing and snow are still skimming through my veins, so this very special 30th anniversary issue of the Ski Solutions Winter Preview makes a fascinating read. I see that the

Ski Solutions team spent 331 days on the slopes last season seeking out the best chalets and hotels, and the “hidden food stops and après hot spots” that make their holidays “unforgettable”. I can believe it. Last winter I shared a few happy days with Craig and some of his team in Courmayeur, Italy and as you will see on page 18, I was very well looked after. In fact you might almost say all the solutions to skiing pleasure were taken care of, even the snow! Sadly, I’ve yet to ski with Craig in Canada, where as we go to press we receive news of a $1 billion acquisition of Whistler Blackcomb by Vail Resorts. We have the full story and what it means for British skiers in our news roundup on page 9. It was back in 1986 that I was first captivated by the Dolomites, about which the Italian writer and poet Dino Buzzati asked: “Are they rocks or clouds? Are they real, or is this a dream”. I remember getting into (slight) hot water on the FT when I carelessly said the Dolomites were granite - a mistake quickly picked up by a rather distinguished reader. They are, in fact, limestone: and as Dino Buzzati himself might have said... “great monoliths that tower almost vertically into the heavens, clustered with porphyry crystals which catch the rays of the sun at dawn and dusk in pink alpenglow.” Ski Solutions have now come up with a Dolomites Ski Safari enabling you to travel round a dozen or more mountains (see page 21). But instead of cruising round in a leisurely day on the well-known Sella Ronda circuit, this safari involves staying high in the mountains, spending nights in a mix of hidden-away mountain refuges and plush Alpine lodges. Sign me up - it's been 30 years in the making!

After 15 years with the FT, Arnie Wilson edited Ski+board magazine for 13 years. He has skied in 729 resorts, including 40 heliskiing locations, and all 38 US skiing states.

WINTER SPORTS NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

The wait is over: four new ski lifts create Austria’s largest ski area Thanks to the construction of four new lifts by Ski Arlberg, skiers will be able to travel between the St. Anton and Lech sides of the Arlberg region this winter. With the resorts of St. Anton, St. Christoph, Stuben, Zürs, Lech, Schröcken and Warth linked, the ski area now totals 305km, making it Austria’s largest winter playground. From Zürs, skiers can board the new Trittkopfbahn I cable car and travel all the way to the new Trittkopfbahn II station, or alight at the mid-station and jump on the Flexenbahn. This brand-new 10-person gondola provides a long-awaited connection between Zürs and Stuben - as well as access to the new ‘Run of Fame’, a 65km circuit with 18,000 metres of vertical. Travelling 1.8km in six minutes, the Flex lift can transport 2,400 people per hour to Alpe Rauz, where lift connections to St. Anton and St. Christoph begin. From here, the fourth new gondola, Albonabahn II, continues to the top of Stuben. While it was already technically possible to ski from St. Anton to Lech (descending from Valluga), the challenging off-piste route was only suitable for expert skiers accompanied by a guide - with no return lift. This lift project (which cost approximately €45 million) has solved that problem and elevated the Ski Arlberg area to the big league, alongside the likes of the Espace Killy in France.

Direct flights to Salt Lake City bring Utah closer to home For the first time, British skiers and snowboarders can now fly direct to Salt Lake City from the UK, thanks to a new flight route announced for winter 2016/17. With four flights departing each week out of London Heathrow, Utah’s finest resorts - including Park City, Deer Valley, Alta and Snowbird - are now much easier for the UK market to access. This is likely to boost British interest in Utah - both in the state’s most renowned resorts, and its smaller gems such as Sundance, Snowbasin, Powder Mountain and Solitude - as well as North American resorts in general. Park City, which merged with Canyons last year to create the largest overall ski area in the US, is a mere 45-minute transfer erbier is embracing from Salt Lake City technology this winter – - add that to an 11by offering drone hire. hour direct flight Hexo+ self-tracking drones follow instead of at least your progress down the slopes a 14-hour flight via using your Smartphone’s GPS Chicago or Dallas, combined with Bluetooth - so and Utah becomes you can now record your greatest a serious contender runs, tumbles and snowpark jumps amongst the North from a bird’s eye view. Whistler Blackcomb acquired by Vail Resorts in US$1 billion deal One of British Columbia’s most popular resorts has announced that they have entered into a strategic business combination joining Ski Solutions most popular North American destination, Whistler Blackcomb with Vail Resorts. This follows hot on the heels of the recent announcement of an ambitious $250 million redevelopment project entitled ‘Whistler Blackcomb Renaissance’ which over a number of years will boost the area’s all weather appeal through the creation of a new aquatic and indoor activity centre in addition to lift up-grades and the development of a new skiers’ plaza at the Blackcomb base area in the Upper Village. “Combining Whistler Blackcomb with Vail Resorts’ portfolio of outstanding resorts provides Whistler Blackcomb with increased financial strength, marketing exposure, guest relationships and broadens the geographic diversity of our company with resorts across the United States, as well as in Australia and Canada.” said Dave Brownlie, Whistler Blackcomb’s Chief Executive Officer. Explaining the impact of the acquisition on British skiers, Ski Solutions Product and Commercial Manager, Paul Russell said, “It will be business as usual this winter, but we expect Vail Resorts to integrate Whistler Blackcomb in to its market-leading Epic Pass lift ticket for the 2017-18 winter season. This will create a truly unique ski pass covering leading global resorts including Vail, Park City and Heavenly.”

Budget airline Jet2.com is doubling its ski flight capacity this winter, with 230,000 seats now available to the Alps and Bulgaria. There are new routes available from regional UK airports to Geneva, Grenoble, Lyon, Salzburg, Turin and Verona, and an increased number of mid-week flights to Geneva and Grenoble from East Mi d l a n d s , Leeds a n d Ma n c h e s t e r. New routes include Edinburgh to Turin, Leeds to Grenoble and Newcastle to Grenoble. Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2.com said: “We really mean business with our newly expanded ski programme, giving our customers access to 80 of the best resorts in Europe.”

ST. ANTON SHORT BREAKS

S

ki Solutions has launched a short break programme to St. Anton for winter 16/17. This attractive Austrian resort is famous for its superb après ski and traditional Tyrolean charm - and with a comparatively short transfer from the airport, it comes as no surprise that it has become one of the most requested short break destinations.

THE BIG INTERVIEW

PHIL SPENCER One of the most recognisable faces on British television, an all-round property expert and Ski Solutions client. In our interview with Phil we hear all about his relaxed family ski holidays in the Alps, perfecting his ski technique, and racing Kirstie Allsopp.

Do you ski, board or both? Ski! Never had a go at boarding, and don’t think I ever will – I’m too old for that. Tell us about skiing with your family. My children are now 10 and 12 and I guess having not learnt to ski as a child (and my skiing reflects this!), I thought it would be a wonderful thing to enable my children to ski as small boys. I think teaching small children to ski can be expensive, a little painful and not very rewarding, but the payoff I always believe is that once they’ve learnt it will be an activity that we are all able to enjoy together forever. However, at the end of last season it dawned on me that they are now much better skiers than I am! On the last run of our holiday I was thoroughly enjoying skiing behind my ten year-old and watching him as he was looking so elegant and graceful but there was a little flicker across my mind thinking ‘ahh, you little devil’. Do you have a favourite resort? Well we’ve been to Méribel for the last three years and really loved it. It’s right in the centre of the Three Valleys so you can get anywhere. There are wonderful lunch spots and the skiing is sensational.

10 To speak to our experts, please call 020 7471 7765

For you and your family what are the ingredients that make up the perfect ski holiday? Obviously good snow and blue skies. Friends to play with and long lunches. We normally go with a large group of four or five families, the kids all ski well together, the adults all ski well together and it’s all a very happy time.

Ideal après ski – beers and dancing in your boots, or hot chocolate and cake? Beers and dancing in my boots! I think skiing actually suits my natural sleep pattern, early to bed and early up. So ski early and ski hard, take a long late lunch, don’t ski much after lunch, have a bit of après ski, and then get to bed nice and early. Your wife is Australian, have you ever skied down under? No, I’ve never skied down under. My wife used to live in Melbourne and she’d go off skiing for the weekend. I guess people don’t really think of Australia for skiing, but it’s where you’ll find the Snowy Mountains and the clue’s in the name… What do you get most excited about when planning your ski holidays? I think just being able to spend your days being active but also having nice long lunches, bottles of rosé and hopefully some beautiful weather. On any skiing holiday you are going to have some relaxing time away from the pressures of the day to day grind with good old friends and family; it’s a wonderfully social sport that everybody enjoys together, kids and adults combined. Downhill ski race, you and Kirstie Allsopp, who’ll win? Have you ever worked in the Alps? I think it would probably be quite competitive... We skied Kirstie Allsopp and I did a show called Vacation together in St. Moritz and I was quicker than she was, but Vacation Vacation a few years ago where we I mean girls tend to be technically went off to the Alps. One of better. I was there just hooning down the most fun things about the mountain. She was being rather making that whole series “I was thoroughly enjoying more delicate. But yes, I would win. was doing the toboggan skiing behind my ten year-old ride in St. Moritz which was Can we expect a special ski edition just superb! I mean it seems strange to and watching him as he was of Location, Location, Location? say that we were working at the time… Perhaps Resort, Resort, Resort? looking so elegant and graceful I think someone at Channel 4 must Well wouldn’t that be fun! We did a but there was a little flicker have watched it and thought I’m not series called Relocation, Relocation across my mind thinking paying you to do that! It looks like far in which a couple were looking too much fun, and it was. ‘ahh, you little devil’.” for a house in Northumberland and also a ski apartment so off we What is left on your ski bucket list went to Morzine and it was a great that is still yet to tick off? opportunity for me to scope out the market. I would love Well I don’t so much have a bucket list but I’d love to ski to buy somewhere in the Alps. Emotionally I think it more elegantly. I’m a typical bloke on skis I guess, quick would be a wonderful thing to have, but I also think I but without much style. might feel restricted to one resort and not able to explore other mountains.

UNIQUELY WHISTLER The perfect snow trap, Whistler captures buckets of powder that accumulate over British Columbia’s pacific coast. Consistently North America’s number one ski resort, its unique magic is unveiled as you wind your way from Vancouver along the awe-inspiring Sea-to-Sky highway, taking in the ocean vistas, cascading waterfalls and soaring mountains.

W

histler Blackcomb’s piste map is less a map and more an atlas, with 8,000 acres of terrain, 200 trails and a vertical drop of 1,609 metres. The two mountains are connected by the iconic PEAK 2 PEAK gondola, a must-visit experience with glass-bottom cable cars that show off 360-degree views of Whistler Village, mountain peaks, lakes, glaciers and forests. The resort’s cosmopolitan atmosphere is punctuated by a diverse range of Alpine experiences. Off the mountain, you can enjoy a range of non-skier activities including zipline, snowmobiling, dogsledding, tube park and spas. On the mountain, Whistler Blackcomb’s slopes are richly diverse, allowing skiers of all abilities to learn and be challenged in this unbeatable winter playground.

The restaurants in Whistler are fabulous both on and off the piste, too. Start your day at the top of the mountain with a Fresh Tracks breakfast as you watch the sun rise from the Roundhouse Lodge terrace. And for lunch? Try visiting Raven’s Nest, Whistler’s first on-mountain vegan restaurant; or if you’re looking for a longer, lazier lunch with fine regional foods, enjoy Steeps Grill. Down in the village there’s a wide variety of options for gourmands and families alike. Sample fine dining at Araxi Restaurant; dine mountainside at Garibaldi Lift Company; let your taste buds be wowed by the experiential Asian cooking at the Mongolie Grill; and bite into legendary burgers at Splitz Grill, to name but a few of Whistler’s plethora of restaurants. And then there’s Whistler’s nightlife - a reason to visit this wondrous ski destination in itself. World-famous DJs, live music, après ski and a great party scene mean that whatever your tastes, you’ll find something here for your dancing feet and all-round sense of mountain-inspired merriment. Whistler Blackcomb consistently delivers an unforgettable Alpine experience. For many, it’s the ultimate ski destination.

Courmayeur

IS CALLING ME!

Ski journalist Arnie Wilson returns to one of his favourite ski areas

O

ne of my all-time favourite ski areas is the bijou Italian resort of Courmayeur. The scenery (with the focus on Mont Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps) is second-to-none, the little old climbing town, with its pretty-much pedestrianised Via Roma main street, complete with enticing restaurants and bars (don’t miss the bustling Bar Roma, with its free antipasto buffet!), is charm personified. And the welcoming mountain restaurants - in particular the Maison Vieille, run by the devastatingly handsome Giacomo Calosi - bring the resort very close to perfection. And just down the road at neighbouring Entrèves, the exciting, futuristic new Mont Blanc Skyway cable car proves this picturesque ski region is not living in the past. The state-of-the-art lift rises to 3,466 metres (11,372 ft) on the Italian side of Mont Blanc - arguably the closest point to the iconic summit and the “roof of Europe” accessible by public transport. When I first looked at the blueprint for this starship of the slopes, shaped a little like a gigantic old-school NASA space helmet, it occurred to me that it was rather like the skiing equivalent of three model-T Fords being replaced by a Porsche. Three years on from its demise, the tiny old cabin - the highest and smallest of three ancient ski lifts that used to squash skiers and snowboarders on its final climb from the Rifugio Torino up to the giddy heights of Punta Helbronner is now a distant memory. The new two-part €138 million cable car now rules supreme.

18 To speak to our experts, please call 020 7471 7765

The space-age lift, with zinc titanium coated steel, took four years to build, using the skills of hundreds of construction workers. During the three-year time-lapse between the old and the new, the lower two lifts from La Palud to Rifugio Torino remained open, so visitors with a guide could still get to the exciting ski route down the Toula glacier back towards Entrèves. Later a new bridge and piste enabled skiers to resume the Italian version of the celebrated off-piste Vallée Blanche run down to Chamonix. The views from the cable cars are exhilarating: both of them complete 360 degree rotations during the journey, at a speed of nine metres per second, carrying 800 passengers per hour. Luca Rolli, a board member of Courmayeur’s Società Guide Alpine, said: “The new Skyway cable car system is a grandiose construction allowing visitors amongst perennial glaciers, granite peaks and breathtaking panoramas.” Coming back to earth after such heavenly wanderings, while you’re visiting Entrèves, you might consider visiting the Maison de Filippo, celebrated for its fixed-price feast of 36 dishes! Back in Courmayeur itself, because I wasn’t expecting to ski much off-piste terrain, I rented some pretty standard “all-mountain” skis. Without getting too technical, these work fairly well on and off piste, but if you’re really getting into the “steep and deep”, they don’t work so well. This was quite embarrassing in front of my peers, including our host, Craig Burton, the MD of Ski Solutions. Of course, he skied like a

“The views from the cable cars are exhilarating: both of them complete 360 degree rotations during the journey, at a speed of nine metres per second, carrying 800 passengers per hour.”

dream! Like all the staff at Ski Solutions, Craig doesn’t hang about once his skis are pointing downhill - or when the lifts have shut, either. He and his team are all dab hands - and feet! - at having fun on the slopes and enjoying the night life too. And selecting comfortable accommodation later. In Courmayeur, for example, they might just admit slumbering at the five-star Grand Hotel Courmayeur, and no doubt dreaming about a powder day to follow. And that goes for three-star hotels such as Pilier d’Angle too. As for my rather poor performance on the slopes, what I really needed, our instructor Aiace Bazzana (“just call me Ace” he said modestly) told me, was some really big fat skis. “I have a pair of new Völkl 1s” he said. “Do you want to borrow them?” Didn’t I just? Anything to stop me tumbling over far too often on the rather unsuitable skis I was using.

4 NIGHTS IN MARCH FROM £475

The transformation was immediate. While the huge fat blue skis were a bit cumbersome on piste, it was like skiing on two snowboards or surfboards in deep snow. I was a different skier - I could relax and let rip to my heart’s content. What’s more, for the first time in my life, I became a fashion icon. Apparently my huge blue skis (with green bases), green jacket and blue-green tinted sunglasses were quite the ensemble! And so, led by the Ace, we romped down every bit of exhilarating off-piste we could safely ski - wallowing through the trees, round the trees and zooming through the wide open spaces. If it hadn’t been for the fact that lunch would be in my favourite restaurant in the Alps - or pretty much any other mountain range come to that - I would have been reluctant to stop, I was enjoying myself so much. But I wanted to surprise my old friend Giacomo, who greeted me with a huge hug, a vast grin, and a big plate of steak tartare. There are few restaurants anywhere that I normally allow to devour too much skiing time, but lunch at the Maison Vieille is not to be rushed. By the time we’d got through all the courses - and Giacomo had produced a bottle or three of exceptional red wine - it was almost time for the last run of the day. A near perfect day. What a shame I had to return those jolly green giants to Ace. But trying to steal them - or smuggle them out unseen under my ski jacket - would have been just a little too ambitious. Hell, I didn’t even nick a bottle of Giacomo’s wine!

IT’S ALL ABOUT...

Cucina Angelina T

he delightful Hotel Portetta in Courchevel welcomed British Michelin-starred chef Angela Hartnett to open her first overseas restaurant last season, Cucina Angelina.

Building on the existing casual style of Portetta, Cucina Angelina blends earnest Italian cuisine with French to achieve a hearty menu of delectable winter classics. The restaurant style mirrors that of the food: expect exposed timber beams, oversized sofas and worn wooden tables. There’s plenty of locally sourced produce, and a superb range of meats and cuts cooked on the open grill by Head Chef Henri Dereani. Towards the end of last season, Craig Burton, Managing Director at Ski Solutions, spent a couple of days at the stunning hotel where he sampled Cucina Angelina’s highly acclaimed food. “Supper was absolutely fantastic. From delicate frito misto and creamy mozzarella, we moved on to divine pasta dishes, including the house speciality Agnolotti - guinea fowl-stuffed pasta pockets in a light chicken broth.

“The four-star Hotel Portetta which plays host to this fabulous restaurant has been on my hotel ‘must-visit’ list since it opened in 2008. The old Portetta Hotel was gutted and rebuilt from scratch with 38 luxury rooms and six stunning loft suites. Located slopeside, you ski right back to the door. It’s been a favourite with Ski Solutions clients ever since.”
