WE LCO ME

B E HA P P Y, S K I M O R E This is our philosophy in four words. We really are all about giving you the maximum time on the slopes every winter and giving you the identical holiday experience we want ourselves. A great read? We want you to enjoy our brochure and dream of the mountains, so we invited some top ski journalists to write this. We hope you enjoy the read… I’m extremely proud of our team of 12 Ski Experts, our combined experience is immense, with an impressive 5,000 ski days in 100 different resorts. Many of the team have done full seasons and we even have 3 qualified instructors with over 30 seasons between them! Add our dedicated resort team and you’ll be looked after from start to finish. Together we have one aim – to give you the perfect short break. Ski Weekends has been arranging short break trips to the Alps for over 30 years and in that time has enabled skiers and snowboarders to spend 250,000 days on the slopes! It all began with coach weekends to Les 3 Vallées and has grown to include a massive choice of flexible ski breaks to 31 of the best resorts available. We offer so much more than the name says. Ski Weekends also offers midweeks, weeks and tailor made; what we don’t do is the same as everyone else. I’m absolutely passionate about Ski Weekends and about helping you get more time on the snow. I know when I ski more, I’m happy – what about you?!

T H E S TO R Y SO FAR 1989 Harris Holidays runs its first weekend ski trip to the Alps. Frank Harris operates coach holidays from Grays in Essex. As a keen skier he wants to go on a weekend trip; In the days before low-cost flight he’d always driven to the Alps; on this occasion he thinks he will take a few mates. Numbers grew, so he decides to take a coach. Ever the businessman, Frank decides to sell the spare seats and to his surprise there were plenty of takers, desperate for a weekend ski trip. Initially they stayed in a hotel called Le Roma on the edge of Albertville, driving to the 3 Valleys each day.

1992 The Olympics comes to France and the gondola from Brides les Bains opens, taking just 22 minutes to reach the heart of Meribel. Frank quickly realises that it is quicker to park in Brides than drive to resort. His coaches now start staying in Brides working with various hotels, still focusing on weekend trips, with the occasional week in between.

1995 Harris Holidays buys the 3* Hotel Verseau in Brides les Bains. The full schedule of week and

weekend coaches operate throughout the winter. The hotel is staffed by an enthusiastic team of British staff. Guests can now also arrive by flights or self drive.

1996 The first regular Ski Weekend’s flights is born and becomes the brand for Harris Holidays. The coach business just keeps growing with extra coaches on busy dates. As easyJet takes off, the first regular ski weekends flights head for Brides.

2003 Frank decides to retire to play golf in Florida. Skiweekends is sold to Banks Sadler, a corporate event company who are also enthusiastic skiers. They don’t buy the hotel and Frank Harris sells it privately to Franck le Breton, a local businessman in Brides. The programme steadily grows, now has two coaches each weekend to Brides. Flight packages are offered to the 3 Valleys and Chamonix. Over the next few years three resorts in Switzerland and one in Italy are added.

2007 Dan Fox takes the reigns and steers Ski Weekends towards more coach and flight choices, adding hotels and resorts.

2008 Ski Weekends becomes an independent business and makes its own fresh tracks with Dan as

Managing Director. Over the years since then, we added several new resorts and more UK airport options, plus additional coaches to Morzine and Chamonix. The Brides coach continues to be ever popular and, although only a small part of what we now offer, it is still important to us.

2012 We launched mid-week trips, which surprised us in their popularity, with many parents going in the

week and leaving the kids at home with the grandparents, taking advantage of free child care and low midweek prices.

2016 We have a brand new concept in the wings; watch out for launch in spring time

I NT R ODU C I NG TH E 3 VA L L EYS No other ski region on earth quite matches the 3 Valleys. With a whopping 600km of full inter-connected slopes and terrain for all standards, it is the planet’s largest ski area. Those stunning statistics however only tell part of the story. Each of those three valleys is a ski region in its own right. You can choose between the Courchevel Valley, skiing from the open slopes of sophisticated 1850 into the tree-lined runs which take you into the characterful lower villages, where you’ll find more chalets and lovely 3* hotels. The central Meribel Valley, with its strong British connections and link to the spa resort of Brides les Bains. Finally, the Belleville Valley with family friendly Les Menuires and Reberty, as well as Europe’s highest and most hi-tech ski resort, Val Thorens.

For example, millions are spent each summer in building ever better, faster and more comfortable lifts to whisk you back up the slopes more efficiently and safely. The Meribel Valley for example runs more gondola lifts than any other ski area on earth, and the whole 3 Valleys have invested heavily in special extra safety features on their lifts making them the safest in the world for children to use. Off the slopes there’s a vibrant mix of opportunities in the various resort villages – you can find, some of the largest aprés-ski options in the French Alps and a vast choice of dining possibilities including lots of Michelin-starred choice. It truly is a phenomenal ski region.

The 3 Valleys is on top of the world for more than just its size. The region has been getting better and better every year for decades now, regularly fine tuning what it offers and how it delivers that service.

BR I D E S L ES BA INS A lot of people don’t realise that in order to enjoy the huge 3 Valleys ski domain, with its 600km of runs, you do not necessarily have to stay in the most famous resorts like Courchevel, Meribel or Val Thorens. For there are in fact plenty of smaller, intimate villages linked to the vast network that you can choose from instead. Here, you could pay less, avoid the queues and get on to the slopes more quickly. Of these, Brides les Bains is quite a special choice in the 3 Valleys. A gondola lift was built to connect the old spa town to Meribel at the base of the ski slopes for the 1992 Winter Olympics, meaning you can be whisked up to the snow at the start of the day, but save a fortune by staying down in the valley. Staying down below the main area also means you can reach the resort more quickly, whether you arrive on the direct coach service from the UK or by air. The location also avoids the winding mountain roads, and means that you can take advantage of the great spa facilities which made Brides les Bains famous before anyone even thought about skiing on the snowy slopes above. The small town today still provides a very refreshingly different and traditional experience to the purpose built resorts, and even has a casino, along with its shops and restaurants, to remind us of its grand spa days in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. But you may prefer to just enjoy the typical French boulangeries and relaxing post-ski spa treatments which are perhaps the more sumptuous traditions still popular today. There is a great range of hotels from 2 to 4* to suit all pockets.

M ERIB E L & CO URCHEVEL Near neighbours, Meribel and Courchevel are two of the world’s best known ski areas and are at the heart of two of the famed 3 Valleys. Each ski valley is bigger in its own right than most other ski resorts, even without buying the full 3 Valleys pass. Novice or early intermediate skiers will find gentle treelined slopes close to the resort villages especially for them, and higher up there are steeper blues and reds which allow mixedability groups to ski in the same areas. The huge region climbs up above 3200m opening descents of up to 2000 vertical metres - home to some of the world’s longest runs. It also ensures good snow conditions at this altitude, with lots of extensive snowmaking backing it up. Along with the famous resorts themselves and their various different bases, all reached by fast and efficient transport links, there are also smaller ski villages you can stay in including the affordable Brides Les Bains in the Meribel Valley. Meribel’s main village is known for its traditional wooden chalet buildings, Courchevel for its luxurious chalets and hotels. Both however have plenty of affordable and functional accommodation too. The main resorts attract skiers from around the world and have extensive facilities including lots of great bars and restaurants to choose from for all tastes. Courchevel in particular has a great reputation for its world class dining and Michelin starred chefs. The strong British influence has helped Meribel become an aprés-ski hot spot for the French Alps, and is home to a selection of famous bars that include Le Rond Point (The Ronny) and La Folie Douce that have to be experienced for the most full on ski weekend.

R E B E RT Y & L ES MENUIR E S

Les Menuires has long been an under-rated option in the 3 Valleys. However, those in the know have seen the resort quietly expand and improve with the emergence of ever better facilities on and off the slopes in recent years. The resort maintains its long-standing advantage for fast and easy access to Val Thorens further up the valley or even to get over to the next valley of Méribel and Mottaret, sometimes reaching key areas before those staying closer to them. Traditionally very much a skiers’ resort, there has been investment in more non-ski alternatives in recent years, with more bars and restaurants opening, as well as swimming and spa facilities. This broadens les Menuire’s appeal, although it still remains quiet in the evenings so is not a good choice for party types. There’s skiing for all ability levels and les Menuires has made a particular effort for beginners with a special learning zone and programmes in place, so this could be a good option to bring a friend on their first on-snow sliding experience whilst you perhaps venture out in to the vast 3 Valleys. The slopes close to Reberty and Les Menuires also have a reputation for some of the best snow conditions in the 3 Valleys thanks to their altitude at 1800m and slope orientation creating a snow sure zone. Les Menuires is a purpose built resort with various sectors, but well designed so that slopes and facilities are always close at hand. Reberty, one of the bases, has been one of the most popular and grown with attractive new developments in a much more attractive, traditional architectural style than the concrete blocks of the 1960s, but sticking to the long-successful design plan of being skiin/ski-out in almost all cases.

V A L T H OREN S It won’t come as a surprise that Europe’s highest ski resort has some of the world’s most snowsure ski slopes thanks to it’s altitude, and there’s even a glacier, or explore the quiet sunny slopes of the 4th valley. What many don’t realise is just how much Val Thorens has developed in to a major international resort, and was even voted the best in the world in a recent poll. Along with a great range of slope-side accommodation and plenty of apres ski and dining opportunities, from burger bars right up to Michelin star restaurants, there are all the extra adrenaline activities to try out too, including Europe’s highest zip wire. Then being located at the top of the world’s biggest ski area, Les 3 Vallées, is just the icing on the cake.

HOTEL KOH-I-NOR A truly stunning diamond for an indulgent stay, not only does the 5* Koh-I-Nor reach the very heights of luxury but, sitting at 2364 metres, the Koh-I-Nor is the highest 5* hotel in Europe. V AL D ’ IS ÈRE Val d’Isère is of course one of the world’s best known resorts. Not only is it a member of a very elite group of half a dozen ski areas worldwide which have hosted World Cup, World Championship and Olympic ski events, it’s also one of the world’s top choices for a great ski holiday as it has it all – world class ski terrain and a superb resort base. It also has an excellent snow record with the high altitude of the village and the glaciercrowned slopes towering above making it a much better bet than most in early and late season. Val d’Isère’s village centre is a pedestrianised hub of activity with shops, bars, restaurants and an abundance of other facilities. All are only a few steps from the base of fast, efficient lifts serving twin ski sectors, both offering some of the most exciting and extensive ski terrain on earth. The area shares more than 300km of runs with neighbouring Tignes in the fabulous Espace Killy, which also offers one of the biggest lift served verticals you’ll find anywhere at over 2000 vertical metres.

T IG NES Sharing the amazing Espace Killy area with neighbouring Val d’Isere, Tignes has been purpose built to offer doorstep skiing to one of the world’s great ski areas. No other French resort has a better opening record. In fact it’s the only French resort open for most of the autumn, with skiing guaranteed on its glacier slopes from early October through to May. It’s even open for a few months in the heat of summer. Tignes is big enough to offer something for everyone – beginners, piste-mile-crunching intermediates, freestylers looking for the best terrain parks and even the most demanding advanced skiers. Adrenaline junkies will revel in the numerous unusual attractions including a recently added bungee catapult rope – ski, board, or sledge off a downhill ramp and in to the void – with the famous elasticated ropes attached. Who could resist that? Off the snow the choice of restaurants, cafés and bars continues to grow, making Tignes an ever more vibrant and comprehensive choice for the complete ski break.

HOTEL LE TAOS Brand new to Tignes for 2016, the Mexican-inspired Hotel Le Taos is a real treat to behold. As well as its superb ski in/out position, this unique property boasts extensive facilities. Feel free to take a dip in the pool after a long day on the hill, relax in the wellbeing centre, enjoy a quiet drink in the hotel bar and lounge, or wine and dine in the hotel’s superb restaurant – aptly nicknamed ‘The Lair of all Feasts’. LA PLAGNE Once voted the world’s most popular resort, La Plagne is certainly one of the biggest and best ski resorts out there. It has 10 different base villages ranging from traditional valley villages to state-of-the-art purpose built ‘ski stations.’ That’s before you consider it’s part of the giant Paradiski region, connected by a spectacular double-decker cable car to neighbouring Les Arcs and creating one of the world’s three biggest ski regions in the process with 425km of piste between them. This massive area covers every type of terrain imaginable and is also one of the planet’s most snowsure, thanks to high altitude, glacier-capped slopes at the top of its huge lift-served vertical. For advanced skiers and boarders the freeride terrain down from the Bellecôte is a must-ride, and everyone should have at least one go on the Olympic Bobsleigh Run where various options include a taxi-bob ride behind a professional driver in a proper bob, or going down with three friends in a self-steering bob raft.

CHALE T B E LLE NE IGE & CHALE T PARADIS These two neighbouring chalets are right at the very heart of Belle Plagne, with the slopes just a few metres from the door giving ski in/ ski out convenience. Modern and well-designed, they both provide comfortable living rooms with large fireplaces – perfect for relaxing around with your hot chocolate after a long day on the hill. The relaxation doesn’t stop there; within the same residence you can access the spa, sauna, hamman and Jacuzzi. Our chalet staff will certainly cater to all of your needs whilst you enjoy a fusion of convenience and comfort in one of the prettiest purpose built villages in the French Alps. • • • •

PR E CISIO N SKI

It’s always a debate whether to buy or rent your equipment as there are of course pros and cons to both. Buying means you know what you have and you have it with you on arrival in resort, no time wasted in the shop or the danger of getting the wrong gear. But it also means a big upfront cost, maintaining your kit and - if you fly - the hassle and often high charges for ski carriage, typically £50-60. Whilst no sensible person would suggest a new skier should buy their own skis or board and boots, most do opt to buy their ski or snowboard boots and helmet so they know they have something comfortable and correctly fitted on arrival in resort, which they can usually manage to get in their case, so just skis or board are needed. These days it’s sensible to sort your rental before you leave Blighty. Especially on a short break where maximising the time on the slopes really matters. Pre-booking with Ski Weekends also means you know your kit is reserved and waiting for you, even down to the size you need. Check that you can switch equipment whenever you want, so that you can make the most of the conditions in the resort, especially if there’s fresh snow. It’s worth checking your insurance and perhaps adding the local excess waiver. In some places the shop is in your hotel or can be delivered to you, so zero hassle.

P O R TES DU S OL EIL The Portes du Soleil ski region – meaning ‘gates of the sun’ – is one of the world’s largest, with 400 miles of groomed piste shared by a dozen ski resorts on both sides of the France-Switzerland border. It’s also one of the most northerly ski regions in the Alps, meaning it’s closer to Geneva and for drivers from the UK and also it has a great snowfall record. Most of the resorts are traditional villages, rich in character and ambience, and they include some of the world’s best known ski destinations including Morzine and Les Gets. However France’s only completely car free purpose-built resort, Avoriaz, is also here. You can enjoy a different ski safari every day!

M ORZ IN E A large village of traditional, wooden chalet style buildings and a favourite of British skiers for the best part of a century, Morzine. It is a great choice if you’re looking for a bustling, traditional French ski village with a strong, year-round community and a great range of cafes and restaurants plus an exciting après-ski scene. Add to the tick list the fact that this is one of the closest and easiest resorts to reach from either Geneva Airport or the Channel, plus that it lies at the heart of one of the world’s largest ski regions, the vast Portes du Soleil, and you can understand just why it’s so popular. You can choose each morning which direction to head in across the huge ski area which extends via the challenging ‘Swiss Wall’ run over the border in to Switzerland (easier alternative routes are available). Or to one of half-adozen other French villages nearby.

LES G ET S

The Portes du Soleil region which straddles the border between France and Switzerland is one of the world’s largest with 650km of terrain on one lift pass, making it possible to ski on wonderful day long excursions of more than 100km from village to village. There are more than a dozen villages inter-connected on the circuit but one has built a reputation as a favourite for couples and families, with great facilities for both. There’s sophisticated dining and bars, alongside plenty of family friendly options. A resort of largely traditionally chalet-type buildings, Les Gets is an authentic, year round community, not a purpose-built resort, with plenty of traditional bakeries, shops and family-run restaurants. One of the most popular is Isabelle’s chocolate shop, which also runs chocolate and sweet making classes for the kids. It’s typical of the family-orientated ethos of this rustic village which also has strong eco-friendly credentials, and is just an hour from Geneva Airport. The vast distances you can ski in a weekend based here have already been mentioned. There’s a great variety of terrain closer to home with a larger sector shared with neighbouring Morzine and served by more than 50 lifts, as well as a separate ski area that’s accessed from Les Gets only. All levels of skier and boarder are catered for and all styles too, with a highly-regarded terrain park and a great skier/boarder cross course to enjoy (one of the world’s best in this discipline is based here).

A VORIA Z Avoriaz is different to any other French resort, in fact any ski resort full stop, and for the millions who love it, it’s all the better for that. Located at a snowsure 1800m it’s the country’s only car free resort where the streets are, quite literally, pistes. Purpose built a little over 50 years ago, it is superbly well designed with all accommodation slopeside and an ever more vibrant hub of shops, restaurants and bars a short walk (or ski) from your door. Catering for all tastes in snowsport and all types of skier or boarder, its off-slopes attractions include the wonderful and remarkable Aquariaz tropical swimming pool and spa complex (very surreal high in the French Alps), which add to its existing reputation as a safe ideal choice for families. Another great feature is the Burton Stash all-natural terrain park, which has won awards as ‘best in the world’ and is well worth a visit. Oh and did we mention that there are 650km of piste at your doorstep stretching for miles to link other French areas as well as over the border in to Switzerland.

HOTEL DES DROMONTS Situated in the heart of Avoriaz, this highly characterful property has a lot to offer. The original shingle style siding, which is typical of the ski area, achieves a beautiful mix of modern comfort and lively peppy sixties style providing this hotel with a somewhat unique charm. Settle in around the fireplace after a day on the slopes, take full advantage of the spa and then retire to your cosy room - all of which offer a calming cocoon of luxury. Furthermore, located just off the piste, this ski in/ski out hotel really does achieve a valuable balance of character, convenience and comfort. • • • • • •

Located in a famed snow pocket and within a giant powder bowl, Flaine’s founders really knew what they were doing when they created this great resort five decades ago; they even had the foresight to locate it as close as they could to Geneva Airport for very quick and easy access for a ski weekend. Designed to offer maximum convenience with most properties either ski-in/ski-out or just a few steps from pistes and lifts, Flaine really has the perfect set-up with a small collection of shops, restaurants and bars offering everything the ski-holidaymaker needs close by and nursery slopes also right by the high altitude village. Wonderful long cruising blues and reds drop down from the rim of the vast snow bowl Flaine sits at the heart of, and if you still want a bit more adventure, you can use the Grand Massif pass, covering around 270km of piste, to go off the bowl and drop down the amazing verticals to one of the neighbouring traditional village resorts for lunch on runs up to 10km long.

HOTEL LE TOTEM The 3* star Hotel Le Totem has recently undergone extensive renovation resulting in a fresh, contemporary property that is sure to impress. Sitting in an enviable position in Flaine, with skiing virtually to and from the door, the hotel offers a multitude of facilities including a large lounge with fireplace, a restaurant and an impressive wellness centre. M EG ÈVE The original leading French resort, Megève was modelled as a ski resort to rival Switzerland’s St Moritz and it succeeds in being the most chic and atmospheric of French ski areas, centred on its ancient square and cobbled streets. You’ll find enticing shops and gourmet restaurants here – indeed Megève has a reputation for offering the best dining in the French Alps (which some argue means the entire European Alps).

In addition to Megeve, you can ski in Chamonix with the Mont Blanc ski pass.

It’s a resort that’s easy to reach quickly for a weekend ski trip and it’s also got a lot to offer non-skiers with quaint cafes, jazz bars and sleighs to hire so it’s a good choice for mixed groups or even coupes including both skiers or boarders and non-skiers. Although not created in the era of the big French altitude resorts with their giant ski areas, Megève has expanded its slopes over the years and linking to its neighbours to create the Evasion Mont Blanc pass, one of the world’s largest lift-linked ski areas covering 445km (nearly 300 miles) of trails around Mont Blanc. The area links Megève’s skiing over Mont d’Arbois to St Gervais and on the other side, the Rochebrune ski area is exclusive to Megève, whilst a third area, Jaillet, is shared with the villages of Combloux and La Giettaz. Mont d’Arbois and Rochebrune are connected at their bases by cable-car. Many of the slopes are below the tree line with pretty runs and wonderful vistas out towards Mont Blanc. There’s plenty of terrain for all abilities with several steep blacks and off–piste runs, particularly on Mont Joly and Mont Joux for experts.

HOTEL ALPAGA Stylish, chic like Megeve itself, the 5* Hotel Alpaga is built in the traditional chalet style yet furnished with natural materials and contemporary fittings that mirror its local surroundings. With a clear emphasis on luxury, the Alpaga boasts all of the amenities one might expect from a popular 5* hotel including a wellness centre, a large swimming pool and a fashionable restaurant that serves delicious French cuisine. There is also a courtesy shuttle to transport you to and from the slopes and the village centre. • • • •

LA CL US A Z Known for being one of the most authentic feeling French resorts, as well as one of the quickest and easiest to reach from the UK and from Geneva Airport, La Clusaz is also one of the oldest French ski destinations and has one of the most extensive ski areas for a traditional French resort. In fact those slopes extend over five areas, largely interlinked and divided in to more than 80 runs served by more than 50 lifts. If that’s still not enough, the regional Aravis ski pass also includes several more nearby ski areas, the larger of which is Le Grand Bornand, the other offering the largest night skiing operation in the French Alps. Together more than 200km of piste and with a great snow record receiving on average more than six metres of snow each winter above the 1800m mark on its slopes. These in fact climb right up to a snowsure 2600m opening up wonderful long verticals of up to 1500 vertical metres of descent. There are plenty of runs for all ability levels to enjoy, and some magnificent scenic views to take in too, including breath-taking views of Mont Blanc. Along with gentle slopes for beginners, intermediate skiers will find extensive terrain for their ability level and experts will also enjoy several classic black runs plus have the option to book a guide to tackle some of the famous freeriding here.

STUNNING SWITZERLAND Switzerland is where downhill skiing all began in the Alps and it remains the country that draws so many of us back winter after winter. Swiss ski areas include the highest destinations in the Alps with some of the most spectacular scenery to enjoy as you whizz down the slopes. The altitude helps provide some of the most snowsure choices too, with some areas open year round and many of the most famous resorts having permanent glacier snowfields at the tops of their slopes. Fortunately it’s one of the easiest countries to keep returning back to because, as we all know, Switzerland manages to do better than all others at transport efficiency, with well-connected trains and buses ensuring that once you arrive in Geneva you are quickly and seamlessly whisked to your resort in comfort. Even though the Swiss Franc is famously strong, our plucky pound has been fighting back in recent years and has regained considerable ground over the past 12 months, making Swiss skiing more affordable than a year ago when some doom mongers were claiming Swiss resorts had been priced out of the British market – in fact, to the delight of all lovers of superb snow sport, it’s making a come back! The high quality continues in resort with comfortable chalets and hotels and stylish bars and restaurants to enjoy. And although Swiss resorts do not usually offer the lively après-ski scene of some Austrian and these days even French resorts, you can still find plenty of first rate choices to enjoy.

For many people Zermatt is the finest ski resort in the world. There’s just something about being here, with the mighty Matterhorn, a mountain like no other, perpetually positioned there, dominating the sky line. The lack of conventional car traffic doesn’t make Zermatt a sleepy little village, in fact it has grown in to quite a big resort with little electric vehicles buzzing around its streets, but still all development maintains the resort’s overall charm and means that there’s a big choice of shopping, dining and après-ski here plus plenty more to do besides skiing if you wish. But what skiing! Zermatt is one of only two ski areas in the world open 365 days a year thanks to its large glacier area and highest slopes in Europe touching 3899m opening up a massive vertical and a vast choice of terrain extending over the border down to Cervinia in Italy should you wish to ski or board two countries on your ski weekend and enjoy some stunning descents of up to 10km long plus grab yourself an authentic pizza or espresso at one of the great mountain huts on your way down. Saas-Fee is another snowsure Swiss resort very close to Zermatt which, whilst not quite open year round, is open from July one year right through to mid-Spring the next, a unique nine month ski season. Saas-Fee is car free too but is a smaller, quieter choice than Zermatt, although still a well sized resort with plenty of restaurants and a moderate sized ski area above with great long descents and a highly regarded terrain park. Some people do prefer its slightly more intimate feel to its bigger, better known neighbour.

AMAZING AMAZING AUSTRIA AUSTRIA Austria is the home of skiing for many of its fans. None of the other ‘big four’ Alpine skiing nations has maintained the authenticity of its mountain communities in the way that the Austrians have, ensuring strict building regulations mean villages still have their traditional architecture and are entirely unspoilt. For those concerned about environmental issues it’s also good to know that almost all are 100% green energy powered too. Austria is where the skiing we enjoy today all began in the early years of the last century, with the first people to try the ‘modern’ style of downhill skiing doing so in the Arlberg region, home to world famous St Anton. This resort is home to some of the planet’s most exciting skiing and boarding, and like world famous resorts such as Chamonix and Zermatt, one of those you must ski during your skiing life – for most of us returning many times. On the slopes Austrian ski areas have been busily inter-connecting over the decades so now they can offer some of the biggest ski regions in the Alps and with the world’s leading lift company Doppelmayr based here it’s no surprise that they also have some of the comfiest and fastest lifts to whisk you back up the slopes after every run – expect heated leather seats and weather protection as the norm, Austrians don’t like to do things by halves. Fortunately the same goes for those cosy mountain restaurants for which the country is famous. Locally run and serving up copious quantities of traditional cuisine, prepared and cooked on site using locally sourced ingredients, you’ll not only be fully fuelled up for the day, you’ll need to keep skiing or boarding to the last lift of the day to work it off before sitting down for dinner.

Austrians famously do après-ski better than any other nation too. A collection of lively bars will be found at the base of the slopes in every resort and here you can expect high spirits and free flowing beer and wine from midafternoon onwards, indeed some places you need to get in early in order to ensure your place. Austria is home to more ski areas of all shapes and sizes than any other country including some of the biggest and best in the world. St Anton, already mentioned, is of course one of the best known and particularly recommended for advanced skiers and boarders who enjoy the off piste terrain which many argue is the best in the world, as well as those who like to party all night after a hard day on the slopes – again many rate St Anton as having the best bars on the planet too. There is also the unusual option of a city break by staying in Innsbruck, where you have the choice of eight ski areas surrounding the city to visit each day, each just minutes away and included in the lift pass. There’s also the stunning lake-side town of Zell am See, which has its own excellent ski area but also shares a pass with neighbouring Kaprun, which boasts one of the world’s great glacier ski areas. Or for somewhere more intimate, the village of Fugen has both an excellent mid-sized ski area for beginners and intermediates but also has a great snow record and some spectacular freeriding terrain that guides can take you to. Overall the choice in Austria is wider than anywhere else and it’s all yours!

A LW A YS I MPR ESSI VE IT ALY

Italian skiing has a special attraction for so many of us. The country’s ski areas may not quite have the reputation for vast size that some of the big French ski regions do, nor of perfect efficiency as the Swiss do, but they do have a relaxed atmosphere, and a hard to define sense of fun that quite simply makes you feel happy as soon as you arrive on Italian slopes. There are though some distinct advantages to skiing in Italy over other Alpine nations. For one thing there’s the value which is hard for other big ski nations to beat. Then there’s the sunshine for which the country is famous along with deep snow, and of course there’s also the wonderful food and drink which has conquered the world more than any other – be it a simple tasty pizza right up to a gourmet meal, or a perfect coffee which we all try to recreate every day in a British coffee shop, but there’s never anything quite as good as one bought in Italy, somehow! The Aosta Valley on the western borders of Italy is one of the most famous of the country’s ski regions and home to one of its best known, best loved and easiest to reach resorts – Courmayeur. Located on the Italian side of Mont Blanc (or Monte Bianco as it’s known to the Italians), the village is located in spectacular, dramatic mountain scenery and began life three centuries ago as a spa town.

33

If you are part of a couple with one skier and one non-skier, or a group with mixed abilities and interests, it’s a good choice too, as apart from those great shops and cafés there are good facilities including swimming pools and spas, iceskating, bowling or the chance to try paragliding if conditions are good. The ski area above has great slopes for beginners and intermediates but it is experts who’ll be particularly drawn to the world class freeriding terrain, now served by a spectacular €115m brand new and state-of-the-art lift system which uses revolving cable cars to access some of the world’s most famous off piste itineraries. This is also a major excursion in its own right for non-skiers to enjoy with lots to see on the scenic cable cars with their glass walls as they ascend and in the new state of the art mountain base complexes at each station on the way up. Chamonix is only 13 miles away, as the crow flies and through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, but in other respects it’s a world away, with a usually more relaxed, fun atmosphere on the Italian side and quite often totally different weather, with sunshine more likely although snow cover is till copious.
