MINUTES WITH...

How often are you out on the slopes? As often as I can be, though realistically I’ll get perhaps 20-25 days on the slopes each winter squeezed around product visits. I’m no different from anyone else in the team in that we are constantly planning our next opportunity to get out to the mountains. What’s your all-time favourite resort? I’ve got to be careful about who I might upset here but, I have to say that my heart is still in Whistler where I spent two winter seasons before joining Ski Solutions. I’ve been back a few times since, and it’s still an unbeatable all-round ski destination, which holds some great memories for me. Your favourite Alpine restaurant… There are some incredible places to eat in the mountains, but my favourite has to be Chiecco in Courmayeur. This mountainside gem of a restaurant, adorned with jeroboams of spicy Barolos and Barbarescos is just the spot to cosy into with friends and family for a long lunch on a stormy day. I’ve had some great meals there including wild boar with polenta, lamb chops with this incredible mustard sauce and massive T-bone steaks, literally as big as your plate.

CRAIG BURTON

MANAGING DIRECTOR SKI SOLUTIONS Craig Burton, the Managing Director of Ski Solutions, aims to get out to the slopes as much as possible throughout the season to experience first-hand our favourite hotels, restaurants and the best in après ski. It’s a tough job but somebody has to do it! In our five minute interview, we get the low-down on the best mountain restaurants for an Alpine treat, top tips on where to go for your next ski holiday and his exciting plans for the season ahead.

“I’m no different to anyone else in the team in that we are constantly planning our next opportunity to get out to the mountains” A hotel well worth a visit… Tricky one… For all-out opulence, it’s hard to beat The Chedi in Andermatt. In North America, The Four Seasons Whistler and Little Nell, Aspen both serve up stunning service and top class dining with an unbeatable location. The family-run four star Hotel La Perla in Corvara is probably the perfect all-rounder and one I will keep going back to again and again. The highlight of last season… Well, it would be pretty hard to beat the thigh-deep powder circuits through the silver birch trees in little-known Rusutsu in Japan, closely followed by a near perfect lap of the Sellaronda with good friends under blue skies and a fresh icing of snow on the pistes. What are you most looking forward to next season? Amongst other things, I’m hoping to get stateside to see the new developments in Park City, and I can’t wait to get out to ski our new resort Gressoney in Italy’s Aosta Valley.

HAT’S NEW

WINTER SPORTS NEWS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

New cable car opens in Courmayeur, Italy After a 4 year build that cost €110 million, the SkyWay Monte Bianco cable car opened in Courmayeur this summer. From its base station in the resort, the new lift runs up to 3,462m, to Punta Helbronner on the Italian side of Mont Blanc, with a mid-station at 2,200m complete with restaurant and botanical gardens. The lift is open all year round for mountaineers, hikers, skiers and snowboarders as well as those who simply want to have a drink at the top bar and enjoy epic views of Mont Blanc from the viewing platform. While there’s no on-piste skiing from the top, the new lift is an off-piste skier’s dream, giving access to the Toula Glacier, Marbrées, Pavillon Woods and the Vallée Blanche. Once on board, a simple mountain view isn’t all you can enjoy - cable car riders can enjoy weather reports, avalanche news, and ‘landscape cam’ - the view beneath the car, captured on camera - all shown on a big screen. Just in case you think you might still miss something, each car rotates 360 degrees while travelling, too.

‘Alpine Legends’ lift pass launched in the Tarentaise, France Les Trois Vallées, Paradiski and Espace Killy - three of the largest ski areas in France - have teamed up to offer a single ski pass. For skiers and snowboarders, this means access to a plethora of fantastic resorts including Val d’Isère, Meribel, Tignes, Les Arcs, Val Thorens and Courchevel, all under one 6 day pass. Costing approximately €340 (prices at the time of printing were unconfirmed), the Alpine Legends pass covers 391 lifts across five glaciers, giving skiers access to a whopping 1,300km of slopes - all for just a little more than the cost of a 6 day pass for just one of the three ski areas.

US ‘mega resort’ is on its way Earlier this year, work began on creating the largest ski resort the US has ever seen. Park City Mountain Resort and nearby Canyons were purchased for $182.5 million in 2014 by Vail Resorts, who then announced plans to link the two resorts with a new 8 person gondola. Described by the Park City Planning Commission as “one of the most ambitious and impactful capital plans in the history of the US ski industry”, work started as soon as the 2014/15 ski season drew to a close. The improvement project, which includes upgrades to the King Con and Motherlode Lifts at Park City, is costing $50 million, making it the largest ever single-season investment in a ski area. It will effectively create one huge 7,300 acre playground featuring over 300 trails, 38 lifts and seven terrain parks, as well as new slopeside properties and restaurants. “This plan for Park City and Canyons will completely transform the experience at both resorts and throughout this world-class community,” said Bill Rock, Park City’s Chief Operating Officer.

A joyous home run for Les Deux Alpes, France Getting back to your chalet in Les Deux Alpes will be a whole new experience this winter, with the unveiling of a new blue run. Until now, the only pistes leading back to the resort were icy blacks and overcrowded greens. ‘Jandri 1’, the brand new blue, changes all that, running from the glacier at the top of the Les Deux Alpes ski area, right the way down to the bottom of the resort. It might sound like a relatively uncomplicated addition to make, but it is a huge project for the resort, with 550,000m³ of earth to shift and reshape, and 12,000 trees to replant - all carefully planned to comply with environmental policy - at a cost of €10 million. As of 5 December, novice skiers can breathe a sigh of relief at the prospect of a much more enjoyable journey home.

loop the loop IN THE SELLARONDA

1,200km of pistes, fresh seafood at the top of the mountain and breathtaking views of the Sellaronda. The Italian Dolomites are this season’s must-visit European ski destination. By journalist Erin Smith

F

ew ski areas can boast that their cuisine is just as impressive as the skiing, but head to South Tyrol in the stunning Dolomites and you’ll not only be taken on a gastronomic circuit of Michelin-starred restaurants, but you will experience the most scenic ski circuit in Europe. Travellers eager to hit the slopes only seconds after landing will also be happy to note that it’s just a two hour drive from Venice. However, it’s the Sella Massif, the staggering rock formations at the heart of this must-see ski region, that’s the real draw, and are as breathtaking as they are intimidating.

“One of the skiing highlights is a 26km loop of slopes around the Sella Massif which offers mouth-wateringly panoramic views of the valleys below” The Dolomiti Superski area itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site and has over 1,200km of pistes spread over the following sites: Sesto Dolomites, Plan de Corones, Alta Badia, Val Gardena, Alpe di Siusi, Obereggen and Valle Isarco. One of the skiing highlights is a 26km loop of slopes around the Sella Massif which offers mouth-wateringly panoramic views of the valleys below. Just as well, as there are a number of excellent places to eat and drink along the way. The loop links four valleys, encouraging experienced thrill-seekers to ski the clockwise route, while

those still getting their bearings are best going the other way. No matter your preference, you’ll be happy to learn that the whole loop can be accessed with just one ski pass, though it will take one day to complete, so it’s best to set out by mid-morning. When you’re ready to take a break, make sure you stop in for lunch or a glass of wine at Rifugio Emilio Comici on Piz Sella, one of the many peaks along the loop. It is well known for its seafood dishes and fresh fish that is driven up daily from Grado, near Venice. It also has an eye-catching wine list and the locally produced Sauvignon Blanc is a must-try. The Rifugio is easily reached by lunchtime, but if you have a big group it is worth calling ahead to book the day you plan on going.

Val Gardena-Gröden Marketing/Alex Filz

For those eager to hit the slopes, ski cats are available to book to ensure that you reach the top of the mountain first. You’ll also get the added bonus of experiencing the sun rise over the valley below. Don’t worry about grabbing breakfast before you start out on your early morning adventure. A delicious spread is available at the Las Vegas Lodge hut, located at the peak of the Alta Badia Valley.

“The area’s food and wine trails, coupled with amazing ski terrain, offers a one-of-a-kind adventure” For those looking for a long weekend away, Ski Solutions offers several tailor-made packages. Best of all, Ski Solutions’ staff are all experienced skiers and snowboarders to help you get the most out of the area and offer tips based on your skill level. For those looking to splurge, you’ll be hard pressed to find accommodation more luxurious than Hotel Rosa Alpina in the village of San Cassiano. Nestled in the Alta Badia Valley, this laid-back Relais & Châteaux hotel offers stunning views,

friendly staff and exceptional spa facilities to soak your tired muscles at the end of a long day. What’s more, its restaurant, Restaurant St Hubertus, offers wonderful local cuisine. Even for those who opt to stay elsewhere, a visit to the chef Norbert Niederkofler’s space is well worth your time. What was once a small pizzeria has been completely transformed into a two star Michelin-rated experience, which works with local farmers in the area to create seasonal menus showcasing the area’s freshest ingredients. If you’d prefer to grab a bite in town, Maso Runch, in Badia, boasts a six-course meal comprising of traditional Ladin dishes. There are two apartments in the house, which date back to 1720, and have been run by the same family for centuries, serving up classic recipes of barley soup and knuckles of pork. The Rhaeto-Romanic language Ladin is only spoken in the Dolomite valleys of Val Gardena/Gröden and Alta Badia. Irrespective of your native tongue, there’s no denying that the area’s food and wine trails, coupled with amazing ski terrain, offers a one-of a-kind adventure for snowbirds looking to spread their wings. 4 NIGHTS IN MARCH FROM £665

The Big Interview DARREN GOUGH

Former international cricket player and Yorkshire County Cricket Club Captain; 2005 winner of Strictly Come Dancing; contestant on Channel 4’s 2014 series The Jump and a Ski Solutions client. In our interview with Goughy, we find out more about the man behind the fast-arm and his preferences within the world of winter sports. Skier or snowboarder? Oh, I’m definitely a skier. Having had eight operations on my right knee and two on my left, I am one to try anything, so I tried a bit of snowboarding but I just got a bit sick of falling down. Although I prefer going down on the skeleton, that’s my favourite. When did you first try skiing? Not until later life. I only started skiing when I retired from cricket, so about seven years ago now. As a professional sportsman there are restrictions in your contract on what kind of activities you can and can’t do outside of cricket. So skiing as well as motor biking are two things I’ve picked up in later life. Green, blue, red or black… Anything without bumps - I like to go fast. As soon as I see moguls it’s just my worst nightmare. Europe or North America? Definitely Europe, I’ve not done North America yet. I went out to Colorado once for a knee operation during the ski season, but obviously I wasn’t skiing! What’s your all-time favourite resort? A village called Sainte Foy in France [down the valley from Val d’Isère] - it was beautiful. It was quiet with nice little runs. I like it when it’s quiet on the slopes, I don’t like it too busy. Where did you ski last year, and who are your perfect companions on the slopes? Last year I went to a friend’s chalet in Austria. I do like Austria.

18 To speak to our experts, please call 020 7471 7765

My youngest son, one of his friends and I went there for five days. So I could go off with the boys and my son could ski with his friend. When we went to Sainte Foy we had a huge chalet for 16 people. I went there with a load of the guys and we had a right laugh. Will you ski this season? Where do you want to go? Yes I will. We’re going through Ski Solutions too. Last time we went with Ski Solutions I went to Courmayeur in Italy and it was lovely. I think this year it will be France, but I’m undecided at the moment on the resort - I’m looking into Val d’Isère or Tignes. I’ve never been there so it would be fun. Are you a fan of the après ski scene? I do like the partying. I’m a skier where I probably like to ski for 4 hours and then have a long lunch. I do like a glass of wine on the mountain or a couple of cold beers. Best meal on the mountains? If I had to pick my favourite meal, I’d probably say pizza - I love it. Especially when I did the Italy trip - I’ll tell you, my son was obsessed by it. You can’t beat pizza in the mountains. I do like the old melted cheese fondue. You’ve got to have a fondue.

You took part in Channel 4’s The Jump in 2014. Was the ski jump more terrifying than facing Curtley Ambrose and Courtney Walsh in their prime? A lot more terrifying! I loved all the events except the ski jump - I doubt I’ll ever do it again. I broke three ribs, I had ligament damage in my ankle and had to wear a brace for four or five weeks after the show, and I had wrist damage, so I won’t be trying that again any time soon. Every other event, except that, I loved. Phil Tufnell followed you on to The Jump this year. Did you give him any tips while he was out there? Well he was shocking! I mean he was embarrassingly bad. At least I had some good jumps! Even though I broke my ribs going off the mid-sized jump, at least I still jumped 12 or 13 metres off the smaller jump.

“As soon as you get on that first run, it’s just breathtaking every time – I absolutely love it” What would you say is your finest cricketing memory? On a personal point it will be my hat trick against Australia in The Ashes in Sydney [in 1999]. As a team, there are quite a few - beating Australia in Melbourne I’ll always remember, and beating Pakistan and Sri Lanka in their own country, which was an amazing effort because it’s such a rare thing to do. And do you still dance? Ah, not really no. I do like it, I still watch Strictly but no, I don’t dance at all now. You learn a routine and people think you can just get up and get anyone doing it but you can’t. I don’t think it would take me long to get back into it if I wanted to. Finally, what do you love most about skiing? Ooh… I would say probably that first day, whenever you go, it’s just great to get back out there because you always think “I bet I’ve forgotten how to do this”, but as soon as you get on that first run, it’s just breathtaking every time - I absolutely love it.

Ski runs are found on the Vorab glacier and the slopes of four other interconnected peaks, forming part of a combined ski area with Flims and Falera. The ski area caters to all abilities, with several beginner and family-friendly areas combining with long cruising runs to keep carvers occupied for days at a time.

The link up of Arosa and Lenzerheide has created a winter paradise with 225km of slopes, making it one of Switzerland’s top 10 largest resorts. Runs are now more varied than ever, from challengingly steep to leisurely wide slopes, with diverse terrains to suit beginners and keep even the most experienced of skiers entertained. Arosa Lenzerheide also has a great selection of accommodation, from exclusive lodges to cosy chalets. Free public transport between Chur - Lenzerheide - Arosa - Tiefencastel means you can ski the whole region hassle free.

SWEET TROOPER MIPS DRAGON X1 / X1S GOGGLE Dragon’s Apex goggle was the first model to take the now ubiquitous frameless design beyond just niche. The new X1 keeps the same best-selling shape but with sleeker lens venting to improve the field of vision. If the look alone isn’t enough to add this goggle to your wish-list then its ability to have the right lens for the right conditions should seal it. Every model comes with 2 lenses, 1 for bright conditions and 1 for low light, or, with a Transitions adaptive lens that changes colour and automatically darkens when exposed to UV rays. The dilemma of which goggle lens to go for to ensure the best visual is no more, just chose X1 / X1s and always have the right lens, no compromise.

Your head and its safety is not the place to compromise which is why the Sweet Trooper MIPS is such a popular helmet. Combining the elasticity of injection-moulded thermoplastic with the rigidity and strength of carbon fibre means precise areas can be tuned for specific properties. The result is a beautifully shaped helmet with the best protection exactly where it’s needed most. MIPS stands for multi-directional impact protection system and it reduces the damaging rotational forces from an oblique blow by up to 50%. Add in an effective adjustable sizing system and Coolmax liner and it’s easy to see why this is one of the safest, most comfortable helmets on the market. £230

Each tour has been ridden or walked by an expert, so our suggested itineraries include lots of hidden hotspots and tasty food stops - and, of course, fantastic accommodation along the way. Most hotels and guesthouses are small and family-run, hand-picked for their character, comfort and friendly welcome. All rooms have private bathrooms. Whether you want to enjoy some easy riding with your children, a quicker pace with your oldest friends, or to explore as a solo traveller, the route will cater for it. BSpoke Tours are designed for anyone who’s healthy fit and loves to pedal or potter.
