GTR Patricks Vindicator (Patrick) is a 22-year-old miniature horse gelding bought by Sarah Schaaf’s parents when she was only two years old. In 2014, Patrick became a registered therapy horse. Sarah started showing Patrick when she was only five, and rode him until she was seven. Sarah has been training and exhibiting Patrick ever since.
Anna is a 21-year-old equine photographer from Germany who loves to visit big equestrian events. “I like to capture and express all the energy and trust between horse and rider. This fascination and inspiration may have resulted from having my own horses over the years. So I spend the rest of my freetime with my horses. Banish the bounce with new bra guide for riders

The Horse Rider’s Guide to Bras is a new information leaflet designed to help female equestrians avoid breast pain caused by riding activity. Created by BETA in conjunction with the British Equestrian Federation, this handy resource is based on a large-scale study by Dr Jenny Burbage, of the University of Portsmouth, and Lorna Cameron, of Sparsholt College, Hampshire. Their research revealed that 40 per cent of 1,324 riders surveyed experienced breast pain, which was significantly related to increased cup size, and at least one bra issue was reported by 59 per cent of participants. Surprisingly, less than 35 per cent of female riders wear a sports bra and more than 70 per cent of women are reported to be wearing the wrong size. The Horse Rider’s Guide to Bras
seeks to address this problem by offering six pages of guidance and tips on how to secure the perfect fit. “We thought that the study undertaken by Dr Jenny Burbage and Lorna Cameron would be of great interest to both riders and retail members who stock sports and riderspecific bras in-store,” said BETA executive director Claire Williams. “About 900,000 women ride at least once a week and many of them will experience exercise-induced pain at some time. This new guide should go a long way to helping them find a bra that fits well and is beneficial in helping to keep them pain-free and comfortable.” Copies of The Rider’s Guide to Bras can be obtained free from the BETA online shop, at www.beta-uk.org

How Uncertainty Kills Your Horse Riding Confidence By Anne Gage of Confident Horsemanship What To Do in the Face of Uncertainty To feel confident, you need to learn how to take positive action in the face of uncertainty. Despite the fear and anxiety you feel. That’s how I rebuild my confidence. That doesn’t mean that you never feel fear or anxiety. Without any fear you would put yourself in life threatening situations. But, instead of allowing fear to manage you, you learn to manage it. You learn to turn uncertainty around. You become curious. You ask better questions. You become a creative thinker and problem

When you’ve lost your horse riding confidence, you will also be dealing with uncertainty. You don’t trust your ability to predict or handle your horse’s behaviour. Your mind is full of the ‘what ifs’. When I was rebuilding my confidence, I struggled with uncertainty. My confidence was shattered when I fell off my usually quiet, safe gelding. Dooley surprised me with a bucking fit. It seemed to come out of the blue – with no warning. After that fall, putting my foot in the stirrup to mount any horse had me shaking and feeling nauseous. I doubted my ability to predict the horse’s behaviour. I doubted my ability to deal with what might happen. That uncertainty killed my confidence.
Uncertainty Is Part Of Riding Horses There is always a level of uncertainty when you work with horses. You can’t always predict what will happen 100% of the time. You can’t always know how your horse will behave in a particular situation or environment. We are the same as our horses when it comes to uncertainty. The unknown, the unfamiliar, change – they unsettle us. We feel nervous, uncomfortable and anxious. Uncertainty is uncomfortable because it triggers the brain’sfight or flight centre. Our prehistoric ancestors’ survival depended on noticing changes and unfamiliar things in their surroundings. It warned them of possible danger. It was best to leave the scene fast and ask questions later. This innate survival mechanism becomes a problem when it stops you having fun with your horse. You lose your confidence. You lose the dream of the connection and partnership you want to have with your horse.

Reduce Uncertainty By Becoming Curious Your horse’s behaviour may seem unpredictable sometimes. Just like my young gelding’s did to me that fateful day. But, I assure you that there’s always a reason for what he does (or doesn’t do). It may be a learned response that needs to be “un-learned”. It may be a natural response to a noise we don’t hear, a movement we don’t see, or a scent we don’t smell. It may be a response to a subtle shift in your energy, your posture of your position in the saddle. It may be, as it was for Dooley, a reaction to pain. (He was later diagnosed with the chronic muscle disorder, PSSM). There’s almost always a sign that it’s coming. Subtle signs of tension, that most people miss, come before the big behaviour. These are all subtle signs that the horse is anxious: ● Holding his breath. ● Not blinking. ● Tightness around the muzzle. ● Refusing to move or moving too fast.
Become curious about your horse’s behaviour. Learn more about equine behaviour and psychology. Get a deeper understanding of equine body language. You’ll gain a better understanding of your horse and his perception of the world. With that deeper understanding, you’ll begin to see with certainty what causes his behaviour. Then you can take positive action to change it.

Identifying Different Types of Wound with Robinson Animal Health Care
Horses can be accident prone creatures, often injuring themselves when no visible cause can be found. All wounds, even minor ones, require attention to promote healing and avoid infection. A wound can be categorised as open or closed, with open wounds suffering skin damage and closed wounds as bruises or sprains. The ability to identify different types of wound is important in order to treat them effectively. CLOSED WOUNDS Closed wounds usually result in internal bleeding causing swelling, heat and pain. Cold therapy is commonly used to treat this type of injury and is a natural, drug-free way to reduce pain. It lowers the temperature at the site of injury through heat exchange and constricts local blood vessels. This reduces cell damage and fluid build-up. Open wounds fall into four categories, incised wounds, lacerations and tears, puncture or abrasions. INCISED WOUNDS Incised wounds often bleed heavily, have clean straight edges and are caused by the skin being penetrated by a sharp object. Causing little bruising, an incised wound is best suited for stitching, stapling or gluing and will usually heal quite quickly. LACERATIONS AND TEARS Lacerated wounds are the most common type caused by barbed wire fencing and have a torn jagged appearance with some bruising. This type of wound is more susceptible to infection because of the degree of soft tissue injury and often
requires open wound management. PUNCTURE WOUNDS Many puncture wounds are tiny and hard to spot but there is usually a tiny trickle of blood or a highly sensitive area around the puncture. Little blood comes from a puncture wound, unless it has perforated a major blood vessel in which case it may be fatal. The first sign of a puncture wound is often a swollen and inflamed area which can be over looked. A common puncture wound is caused when a horse stands on a nail, and the very nature of a foreign body entering the skin carries bacteria deep into the wound leading to infection. This type of wound must heal from the inside out and usually involves poulticing the wound to draw out any infection. ABRASIONS Abrasions are superficial skin wounds such as saddle sores and grazes, often only involving the skin and hair. Other than a thorough clean, this type of wound usually requires minimal treatment. When the skin becomes damaged as a result of a laceration or other injury, the horse loses its first line of defence against infection. Correct first aid measures can significantly assist the healing process. Serious injuries should always be attended by a veterinary surgeon as soon as possible and always ensure your horse is vaccinated against tetanus. The Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping is returning to Switzerland for the last Major in the year 2016: The best show-jumpers in the world will be competing against each other from December 8th – 11th, and on the final Sunday they will be battling it out to claim the victory in the famous “Rolex Grand Prix.” An interview with the current Grand Slam challenger, Scott Brash, about exceptional horses, exceptional rides and last-minute shopping at the foot of the Swiss Alps.

Question: Just one year ago you went down in history as the first rider ever to win the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping. Now, with your back-to-back victory at Spruce Meadows in September, you are once again the title contender. Why is the Rolex Grand Slam still such a strong attraction for you? Scott Brash: I think it has a strong hold on everyone because Aachen, Calgary and Geneva are the three Majors that every rider wants to win. Every rider wants to be part of the Rolex Grand Slam and have the opportunity to try to do what not many people have done in history. Q: And if you should succeed in claiming the Grand Slam victory again, it would be particularly legendary. Because this year you didn’t compete in Aachen and Calgary with your long-standing successful partner, “Hello Sanctos”, with whom you were able to win the three Majors in 2014/15, but indeed with “Ursula XII”. Do you think this mare also has the potential to claim the Grand Slam title? Brash: To be honest, yes I do and it is because she is also an exceptional horse. She is unique and it is rare to have two unbelievable horses in your lifetime, but she is certainly one of them. She was very close at Aachen, coming second, but proved she has been good enough to be there or thereabouts so all eyes are on Geneva for her now. Q: So you will be bringing “Ursula” to Geneva for the “Rolex Grand Prix”? Brash: Yes, “Ursula” will be coming to Geneva. We have already started organising her programme straight after Calgary with Geneva in mind. She started her campaign indoors in October to get into the indoor season and we have set her up as well as we could for Geneva. Q: What are the special challenges of the Major in Geneva as part of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping? Brash: In contrast to Aachen and Calgary and their huge grass arenas, Geneva is indoors for a start. But I think it is different to the other Majors in the sense that the “Rolex Grand Prix” in Geneva is only one round instead of two, so you are nearly guaranteed a jump-off with the top horses and top riders. It is going to be a testing course with a fast jump-off there as well. So technically, it is very different to Aachen or Calgary, but there is going to be fantastic sport and I am looking forward to it. Q: With its date in mid-December, the CHI Geneva is not only well-known for its great sport, but also for its exceptional atmosphere and the festive ambiance. Do the riders also get into the Christmas mood? Brash: Geneva is such a wonderful show and they have some great stands where you can buy lots of Christmas gifts and I usually do my last-minute shopping in and around there. It would probably be early Christmas shopping for me! But I think having Christmas just around the corner lends the show a great ambiance and everyone is in a great frame of mind and that creates a nice atmosphere to ride in. REVIEW: OUR EDITOR NATASHA PUT THE BERWICK BOOTS TO THE TEST...
Between being a mum, editor and equestrian, any boots I wear are really put to the test. It first thing I liked about the Berwick was the Jodhpur boot style pull at the back of the foot. Once on the boot felt secure and well fitting and I particularly liked the range of adjustment that the laces to the front provided. As someone who has rather slim legs it’s often hard to find well fitting country boots so these were a great success. Overall the boot was extremely comfortable to wear, even after all day at an event I felt no discomfort or general fatigue. The boots made my feet and legs feel well supported whether walking a course or standing around in a media tent. Church Farm Equestrian and Pony Club Centre Expands its Services with the Help of Accessibility Mark A Bristol equestrian centre has become the latest riding establishment to gain accreditation to a national scheme backed by RDA and the British Equestrian Federation. Church Farm Equestrian and Pony Club Centre, based in Keynsham, decided to apply for Accessibility Mark accreditation to develop the long term future of the centre and ensure their services cater for riders of all abilities. Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA), in partnership with Hoof, the British Equestrian Federation’s (BEF) participation programme launched the Accessibility Mark scheme to encourage those who do not already partake in equestrian activities or would not usually have the opportunity to do so, to experience the many benefits that riding can bring. Owner, Kay Padfield, set up the centre four years ago after teaching freelance all over the country for 25 years. A small friendly centre, with just two horses and five ponies, Kay initially set up the centre to specialise in children aged between four and twelve after recognising a gap in the market locally. With a few disabled riders already attending the centre, Accessibility Mark provided an avenue to allow the centre to expand into a new area while taking advantage of Kay’s own previous experience of teaching disabled riders. The focus for Accessibility Mark will take place during school hours when it hopes to capture interest from specialist schools and day centres, offering creative lesson-planning to provide fun, productive sessions. As a Pony Club approved centre, Church Farm would like to offer Accessibility Mark clients the opportunity to work with staff on a one-to-one basis towards the Pony Clubs recognised achievement badges. Kay said: “As a small but busy centre, I try to be inventive in how we can provide our services across the community. Training for the Accessibility Mark scheme allows us to work with children (and adults) whose requirements are benefited by riding and interacting with horses, but who may prefer to visit during our quieter times. “I’ve enjoyed teaching RDA in the past and I’m now proud to be able to offer these specialist sessions at Church Farm during school hours.” Accessibility Mark status is awarded to a riding centre that has been approved by RDA following training and assessment. The close link with the RDA means that they offer continuous support to the establishment to ensure they provide you with a first class service and an experience that aims to be hugely beneficial. There are currently 38 Accessibility Mark approved centres across the country.

Outside it’s cold and dark, so that means we go back inside. The Eventing season is over, but I have some fun indoor competitions to look forward to.

The season is really over now, but of course we do not sit still! After a period of rest and recuperation I started again slowly with Bayro, resuming our serious training, especially dressage! I actually think this is always a fun time. It gives me a chance to forget the pressures of the big competitions and therefore the time to try some new things instead of test-oriented practices. Keyflow is now a very happy retiree… he is still ridden and kept fit, he really enjoys life. My girlfriend Emma, now riding him and even once participated in a jumping competition.

Well Filled Calendar In the near future I plan to focus on the indoor competitions, and my Chinese students, because they ride at next year’s China Games. They now have their last show in Europe, so I’m in the French Montpellier to accompany them. After that the horses and later the riders return back to their homeland, somewhere which I will then also be found regularly in order to prepare them for the Games. My next match is in Paris next weekend. It is a new event, so I’m curious and unwise. Usually state indoor eventing is real kick, it comes with full stands, nice ambience and a lot to see and do. My horse Vakarlos goes along well once again. He’s been injured for a while and should enjoy his first time back out, so I’m excited. A few weeks later I can head to Geneva, again for an indoor eventing competition, so it might be quieter off-season but we have nice things on the schedule. secretly. A B-course in our local area... At first she cried only: “No, no I do not know!” but I think she found it quite exciting to go out with such a top horse. But as experienced as he is, Keyflow can also be quite hot in the ring. Eventually I could still persuade her, but so I didn’t increase the pressure on her further, I did not attend the event. I thought ‘let them be here together”, and it went very well. I’ve watched the video back and it looks like they have been a combination for years. Very cool! So those two might start a few more B / L level events in the future!
