INSIDE INTOUCH
From the Editors...
As Prince Harry and Meghan arrived onsite, the sky opened, and the rain began to pour. As we stood to watch the welcome ceremony, I looked over, and there was Prince Harry and Meghan, standing right next to my baby girl.
Craig Lowndes is undoubtedly the most popular V8 driver in Australian motorsport, and the Triple Eight Race Engineering driver will offer a final farewell to fans the only way he knows how this month, with a full-throttle performance in the last race of the 2018 Supercars Championship – the Newcastle 500. Without a doubt, excitement levels are shifting up a gear in Newcastle’s city centre, with motorsports fans counting down to one of the biggest weekends on their race calendars, and in this issue, we catch up with Lowndes ahead of his swan-song Supercar race. The Coates Hire Newcastle 500 will roll into the city on November 23–25, bringing with it millions of dollars’ worth of finely-tuned race cars, the best V8 drivers in the country and tens of thousands of motorsports fans eager to see who will cross the line first when the chequered flag falls. But in 2018, it’s not just about the racing (although that’s pretty cool!) There is a concerted effort this year to activate areas within Newcastle and Hamilton with events designed for both race-goers and residents – including the super-fun kid's zone at Civic Park. City of Newcastle and other local authorities have created a range of activities that will bring locals back into the city during the Newcastle 500, while also encouraging Supercars patrons to explore our beautiful region with Entertain Newcastle. Check out our Supercars Pullout for all the action both on and off the track.

Raising awareness about PTSD is extremely close to Dave Maione’s heart. The former police officer has recently followed in the footsteps of Australian WWII soldiers along the gruelling 96km Kokoda Trail – the ultimate test of mental and physical endurance. The group also included former Australian rugby union player and star of reality TV show The Bachelor, Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins and raised both funds and awareness for other people living with PTSD. Richard Clapton
RHYS NICHOLSON Thursday 1
Sunday, 9 December, 2018
With a stellar career spanning four decades, Richard Clapton is an Australian music icon. His songs are the soundtrack of our lives. Richard has continually recorded and released numerous records with an unmistakable Australian sound. His landmark album Goodbye Tiger, now 40 years old, was, without doubt, his most critically acclaimed and successful album. Clapton’s journey began when at just 16 he charmed his way into a Sydney hotel to hang out with the Rolling Stones. From that day on, Richard Clapton knew he was going to be a rock star. It's now almost 50 years since that fateful day – years filled with a lifetime of incredible experiences, outrageously good times and a catalogue of iconic and timeless songs. Through the glory years of rock 'n' roll, bouncing between London, Berlin, Sydney, Los Angeles and Paris, Richard forged his own career and built up a significant body of work while living, loving and partying with the biggest names in music. For 40 years, Richard Clapton has been, above all else, a songwriter – a wry observer of human behaviour and an astute commentator on the Australian condition. His best songs – Deep Water, The Best Years of Our Lives, Goodbye Tiger, Glory Road, Lucky Country, Girls on the Avenue, Trust Somebody and Capricorn Dancer – capture the essence of this country and the meaning of our lives like few others. The ARIA Hall of Fame inductee and acclaimed songwriter also became an author with his published memoirs “The best years of our lives” in 2014. Now you will have the chance to join Richard Clapton as he recreates the magic and shares a lifetime of memories on stage. For tickets visit www.lizottes.com.au

Bill Bailey – Earl of Whimsy Sunday 18th November In the first time he has returned to Australia since the 2016 tour Larks in Transit, UK larrikan Bill Bailey is returning with a new comedy and musical extravaganza, Earl of Whimsy! Bailey has a trademark sense of humour – satirical and surreal, stories and dismantled jokes, crowd singalongs, instrumental interludes and in this new show, a distinct historical feel. Tales of Britain's past and present and even Shakespeare's contribution to comedy create both a mockery and celebration of national identitiy, and a journey of discovery. So to escape a world that is becoming seemingly more chaotic, take a trip around Bill's mind, described as
When Galaxies Collide
‘A huge, lavishly decorated and nicely untidy place… its contents spill out with an infectious enthusiasm during this wonderful show’. Catch Earl of Whimsy at Newcastle Entertainment Centre, visit www.nec.net.au for tickets.

FRESH IS BEST AT NEWCASTLE CITY FARMERS MARKET NSW Farmers Market Pty Ltd has been operating farmers’ markets since 1999 when the very first farmers market was trialed at the historic river port of Morpeth. In March 2000, along with other creative souls, the Original Fine Food Market at the Honeysuckle Railway Sheds (now the home of the Newcastle Museum) operated for a fleeting eight months, leaving Novocastrians wanting more. Since then, the establishment of farmers markets right across Australia has seen the development of an entire food industry for both food producers and the public, and so Newcastle City Farmers Market was initiated at the Broadmeadow Basketball Stadium late in 2004. Since early 2005 the market has called the Newcastle Showground and Entertainment Centre home, with the public space bringing together local farmers, producers, and hand-made artisans to over 8,500 customers each week. Over the many years, the market has introduced many new farmers and artisans to a supportive, hungry crowd, with many of the original fine food producers and artisans still attending the market after all these years and providing a constant reminder of the important role of farmers markets in product development, the local economy, sustainability, the environment and tourism. Never been? What are you waiting for! Produce on offer includes organic and conventionally grown and prepared foods including lamb, beef, pork, goat, chicken, duck, trout, salmon, oysters, eggs, salamis, charcuterie, pate, terrines, cured meats, boutique wines, fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade pasta, handcrafted patisserie delights, German pretzels, Greek cakes and biscuits, quesadillas, Columbian food, Lebanese food, Tibetan food, Olive oil, stuffed olives, tapénades, infused oils – and we’re just getting started! In November, markets will be held on Sunday, November 4, 11 and 18 at Newcastle Showgrounds. The market will temporarily relocate to Speers Point Park on Sunday 25 November for a one-off market (due to Supercars in Newcastle), before returning home to the showgrounds on Sunday 2 December. For market dates, recipes and producer information visit www.newcastlecityfarmersmarket.com.au
Astrologer TANYA OBREZA on what’s in the stars this month. Sagittarius 22 November - 21 December For the next 12 months, Jupiter promises to bring you into the limelight. Think back 13 years, and you may find history repeating itself. Perhaps that, too, was a time of good fortune and new beginnings. The first change? A brand new self-image. It’s also a time for travel and gaining new experience. Some benefit from a pay rise, promotion or bonus. Just stay sensible - sometimes it can be all too easy to fritter away good opportunities. Pisces 19 February - 20 March Jupiter settles in your career sector for a year - motivating you to go after exactly what you want; to unreservedly promote yourself and your talents. If you haven't yet found your right calling, you'll probably do so now. New ventures get suddenly noticed by a wider audience, so take this opportunity to flaunt your ambitions to a wider world as new frontiers become real possibilities. You may also travel in connection with your job. Gemini 21 May - 21 June November’s planetary line-up rocks your social world. Over the next year, too, life-changing Jupiter dramatically revamps your romantic life. If you’ve been muddling through a tiresome tryst that no longer satisfies your mind, body or soul - perhaps it’s time to make a clean break. In the meantime, Mercury retrograde after the 18th brings rocky friendships to the fore. Better playmates beckon if you make yourself available.
Virgo 23 August - 22 September The Virgo dream is still on schedule, but it’s not a year for shortcuts. Over the next 12 months, life will feel more like a marathon - so keep those trainers laced. To help, you have a mighty planetary task team onside, including generous Jupiter. Soon enough, emotional fortitude and honed skills let you carve your name in any trophy you choose. And if you can mix pleasure with business, rewards should include romantic spoils.
Jupiter steps into your financial sector this month. Finally, you hit pay dirt! Better still, this bountiful planet creates your luckiest and most lucrative year in over a decade. What’s more, the money gods pull out what’s considered a cosmic-cash pass, something that is kept in reserve for very special occasions. It's also an excellent time to make major investments of lasting value, such as real estate. Alternatively, some decide to redecorate or move to a distant location. Whatever happens, you’re universally steered towards success. Much laughter, love and fun too. A new era of prosperity awaits.
Capricorn 22 December - 19 January As Jupiter moves through your sector of subconscious and psychic sensitivity over the next year, Capricorns learn a great deal about the spiritual dimensions of their lives. If you feel more spiritually protected - you are. And if you need to be taught or healed, a guardian will be close by. The really lovely news? If and when you truly need help, it's likely to arrive - sometimes from the most unexpected sources.
Aries 21 March - 20 April Lost your way, just a little? Not to worry - Jupiter puts you back on track over the next year. This planet can also have a powerful maturing influence, a time of personal and spiritual growth - possibly through travel, new studies or teaching others. There may also be beneficial contact with those living overseas or with people from different backgrounds - so listen up when you hear an interesting accent! Cancer 22 June - 22 July Over the next year, Jupiter brings a time of increased work satisfaction, via a new job or better career or financial conditions. All in all, work is a happier place to be. Other possibilities: travel and higher education. Business and pleasure mix more easily. Health should also be on the up - with one exception: a possible gain in weight. If this is something you'd prefer to avoid, all things in moderation. Libra 23 September - 22 October Thanks to Jupiter’s wanderlust, your curiosity expands this year - making it an ideal time to try as many new opportunities as possible. It's a period when few details - no matter how minor, escape your attention. A growing pile of books, magazines and emails clutter your environment. Relationships with siblings and close family are also likely to improve. Travel’s on the agenda, especially short day trips related to work or family matters.
Aquarius 20 January - 18 February Over the next year, Aquarian hopes and wishes come to the fore. Thanks to Jupiter, you’ll be busier and more involved with others. As Jupiter loves to arrange meetings with people unlike any we've met before - expect to be venturing outside your usual social circle. Friends are also more supportive. But this isn't a one-way street, as you're equally able to offer assistance. Either way, don't be shy of depending on well-placed connections. Taurus 21 April - 20 May Jupiter parks in your financial sector for the next year, bringing Taureans the Midas touch, along with fabulous rewards. Venus also has one or more surprise up her sleeve. This bountiful planetary triggers the law of attraction your way. Money comes more easily, as does financial support perhaps even a substantial windfall. Just don’t take foolish risks - such as excessive borrowing. Clear credit cards, don’t add to them. Leo 23 July - 22 August Generous Jupiter signals a spectacular time for love and sex over the next year, as well as extra cash. In the meantime, with Mercury retrograde in your relationship sector after the 18th, this month you may feel confused regarding the meaning of a current partnership, especially if it’s new. Have as much fun as you wish but hold off on making any important decisions for a while. There’s no rush.

THE "PUDDING CHURCH" Where the Proof is in the Pudding! They say "the proof is in the pudding" and that is certainly the case at Adamstown Pudding Kitchen, where each year the not-for-profit organisation, located just behind the Adamstown Uniting Church cooks, wraps and sells more than 9,000 Christmas puddings to help a variety of worthy causes. It’s an impressive feat, fueled by lashings of brandy, quality ingredients and a community spirit that has resulted in more than $1 million being donated to worthy projects since its establishment. Apart from a closely guarded recipe, the secret to their success is the host of passionate volunteers who give up their
time to help out with everything from cooking and wrapping the puddings to working the shopfront and various stalls where the delicious treats are sold. “We’re making more than 9,000 puddings a year, and they’re all handmade – hand mixed, boiled in cloth and wrapped up in gift boxes or calico,” Adamstown Pudding Kitchen sales and marketing manager Penny Price said. “We’re a not-for-profit organisation, and we have just three paid staff including our head chef Sandra Bevan, but there are also approximately 40 passionate volunteers who we just could not manage without." The tradition was established in 1971 when a church member, grateful for her younger brother’s safe return from the Vietnam war, turned to her grandmother’s family recipe to make puddings for a church fundraiser. More than 45 years later, charity and community spirit are still the key ingredients in the operation of the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen, with profits going towards a range of worthy charitable causes within the Hunter and further afield. Chief among the beneficiaries is Lifeline Hunter and Central Coast, as well as supporting overseas projects to provide fresh water in Africa, school education in the Pacific and community development in East Timor. Of course, its charitable efforts wouldn’t be as successful if it wasn’t for the high quality of its culinary offerings – and these are certainly second to none. Exciting the taste buds of satisfied customers across the Hunter and throughout Australia, the Adamstown Pudding Kitchen’s core product – the traditional Christmas pudding, is still cooked using the same family recipe for which the exact measurements and method of combining them is a carefully guarded secret. The Adamstown Pudding Kitchen has branched out over
the years to create low-fat and gluten-free versions, as well as a new range of gourmet puddings with flavours that include apricot and ginger, date, lemon tang and double choc cherry superb when accompanied by the white chocolate and fresh cardamom sauce. “Of course, we continue to have our core range of decadent dessert sauces that can be mixed and matched with the puddings as well as a range of gourmet jams, pickles and chutneys that are designed to be seasonal, with ingredients chosen at the markets for whatever is available at the time," said Penny. "The exciting news this year is that we have extended the gourmet range to include chocolate covered Pudding Bites which are sure to appeal to a new generation of pudding connoisseurs." "There are three different types of Pudding Bites to choose from – the Traditional Pudding covered in the new Barry Callebaut ruby chocolate, an Apricot Pudding covered in white chocolate and the Sticky Date Cups consisting of a dark chocolate cup filled with date pudding and butterscotch sauce. They are all unbelievably delicious and are sure to be a regular feature on many dessert menus all year round." The addition of the new Barry Callebaut ruby chocolate is particularly exciting for the Pudding Kitchen as the Swiss chocolate manufacturer only unveiled the ruby chocolate to the world in September last year and is a completely new variety of chocolate that only reached Australian shores in August this year. The Pudding Kitchen is open from July to December, but all puddings are available for purchase at the shopfront located behind the Adamstown Uniting Church. Puddings can also be ordered online at www.adamstownpuddingkitchen.org.au or at select Lifeline stores leading up to Christmas.

“The hardest part of the journey for me was day three, it’s the longest maybe not the hardest walk, but I can still remember, it was a few hours before lunch, and it nearly broke me. I was sore, and I mean in every part of my body – I was fatigued physically, but I don’t think you can prepare yourself for the mental fatigue.

The Ultimate Challenge Helping Raise Awareness for PTSD WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer
It’s been an incredibly tough few years for former Newcastle police officer Dave Maione. Since being discharged from the Police Force in 2015 after 13 years of service, Dave’s mental health has suffered. His struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression have seen him battle drug and alcohol addiction, as well as self-harm attempts. But after hitting bottom and ending up in hospital, Dave has begun the long journey towards recovery, determined to make the most of what he calls his “second chance at life”.
This journey has not only seen him focus on his own health, but also take on the renowned Kokoda Trail in a bid to raise funds and awareness for other people living with PTSD. Following in the footsteps of Australian WWII soldiers who famously battled Japanese forces amongst some of Papua New Guinea’s most rugged and isolated terrain in 1942, the gruelling 96km trek offers the ultimate challenge of mental and physical endurance. For Dave, who made his journey along the trail over 11 days last month, it was a life-changing moment he hopes to use to inspire others struggling with PTSD. “The last few years since leaving the Force have been extremely difficult, I’ve struggled with finding my identity,” Dave said. “It’s like everything I knew, everything I stood for and all of my values have been stripped back, I didn’t even know who I was, and that has been the most difficult thing because it has
got in the way of ‘normal’ life, I’ve lost some close friends and relationships because of it. “[In taking on the Kokoda trail] I wanted to be on my own, in my head to try and make sense of everything I’ve seen, the trauma, the guilt I feel, and the sense of injustice I feel every day. I wanted to push my mind and body both physically and mentally, to process it and gain a different perspective. “I’ve always had an interest in our war history and a deep respect for our diggers both past and present, the sacrifice they made for us to have what we have today is nothing short of inspirational. “I’ve had the privilege of meeting and spending some time with ex-army and Federal Police while I’ve been in a PTSD clinic in Sydney. These men are doing it tough because they have spent time on the frontline for our country. “Seeing their struggle gave me some inspiration to take on the challenge, to change something in my life, to achieve a step forward in my own recovery but also to inspire others who are suffering PTSD and depression. “I wanted to show that with a bit of courage and sacrifice you can recover from this illness, that it doesn’t have to control your life and it doesn’t have to define you as a person.” With a less than ideal preparation – “I only decided to do the trail during my recent admission into hospital not even three months ago” - Dave set off on the trek on October 1 with Australian Kokoda Tours. The group also included former Australian rugby union player and star of reality TV show The Bachelor, Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins, who Dave said was “one of the nicest blokes you’d ever want to meet”. “I don’t think any amount of training you do can prepare you for Kokoda; it’s just such a unique place; how they fought a war there is beyond belief,” Dave said.
"By this stage, my mind had processed so much; I was mentally drained. But as I walked into the village for lunch and saw the local men, women and kids greet us with a smile, and saw the third world conditions they are living in, it was like a wave washed over me and the weight I had been carrying the last few years lifted." “I was out of my head and able to look back with clarity, I got that moment I had been hoping for – I am sure that it was at this point my life changed.” The trek was also the catalyst for a fundraising effort, the proceeds of which Dave will donate to not-for-profit organisation Solider On Australia, which offers support to personnel from the Australian Defence Force, as well as other national security agencies including the Federal Police. “The fundraising kind of took a back seat before the trek but now I am back I really want to get out there and have a good crack at raising some money for Soldier On,” he said. “They have had a really positive influence in my recovery, they are doing their best to help ex-servicemen and women and have now opened (their support) up to helping first responders like the Police. “I also want to share my recovery, my achievements of the last few months to inspire other people to speak up, to say its ok not to be ok, and especially say to other men that it’s ok to speak about your feelings, it’s ok to open up and tell someone you’re struggling. “Raising awareness about PTSD is extremely close to my heart. Way too many people are taking their lives - even one life lost is too many. “I believe that I’ve been through and come out the other side of my illness for a reason – to raise awareness and help people, inspire others to open up. “I am still a work in progress and have a long road to go in my recovery, but with a new perspective and a new appreciation I feel that it’s now my destiny to continue to raise awareness and help others.” Dave's facebook page 'The Mental Health Collective' is in its early stages, and he has now taken on volunteering at Waves of Wellness as a mentor for surf therapy. Donations to Soldier On can be made via Dave’s Go Fund Me page online at www.gofundme.com/5n0hpk8 www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 15

SUMMER MARKET SERIES SET TO SIZZLE WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer
The Olive Tree Market is set to launch their summer market series with four big dates in November and December. Each market will feature a unique line-up of over 150 stalls, music and entertainment, with new high profile creatives headlining each event. Creative duo Chris and Camila of Eggpicnic are one stall not to miss. What started as a meeting of creative minds, Eggpicnic has become an iconic arts studio who create quality products, including fine art prints and toys, while educating people about wildlife conservation. “We are a bridge, between the wild and humans, between NGOs and citizens, and between science and art,” says Camila. Their work aims to capture the beauty of the natural world, with the hope of inspiring others to protect it. They create characters that tread a fine line between art, design and cartoon. “We began fusing design and conservation to talk about our unique fellow species in order to inspire change in people’s hearts and minds,” says Camila. “We believe we are all capable of shifting the future and that education is fundamental in doing so. If you can reach people, you can change and empower them.” Simple yet striking, their unique take on our winged natives is so good they’ve gone from decking out homes to colouring the City
of Sydney’s multi-storey construction sites. They’ve also recently unveiled a large-scale public art project at Sydney’s Olympic Park. All of the Eggpicnic prints are produced in-house in their Darlinghurst studio – created with the utmost care and attention to quality, and the finest art paper and archival inks. The pair is guided by what they feel is important to communicate to the world. “Having people say they cannot walk away without an Eggpicnic print because of how happy it makes them feel gives me hope because once we fall in love with something we fiercely want to protect it. This is a great time to take part in this change, and we can make this happen. We just need people to understand it’s worth doing.” Olive Tree founder Justine Gaudry said, “We are really excited to bring an amazing line-up of high-quality artists and designers – like Eggpicnic – to Newcastle for the first time this summer. There will some big names joining the markets, and visitors can expect every date to feature different creatives. Highlights in November will include ethical fashion label Bilboa, and photographer Brett Patman of the Lost Collective, who has gained a huge following for his images of well known abandoned buildings and industrial sites on November 3rd, while Illustrator Lauren Merrick, contemporary jeweller Sophia Emmett of Workshop 85, and Katy Dee of Letter 11 Textiles will be at the market on November 17th. “We encourage our followers, and those new to Olive Tree, to join us for a celebration of creativity and community this Summer,” said Justine. And of course, make sure to pencil in the biggest Olive Tree Market of the year on December 1st! Visit www.theolivetreemarket.com.au for more information.

2012. After saving up money to buy his tools of the trade, Sean borrowed against his own home to invest in his first van. Six years on, the business has grown from a one-man operation to a successful, multimillion-dollar enterprise employing more than 20 people. Sean’s story is one of 14 featured in a new book by Australian technology entrepreneur, international speaker and the author of 16 bestsellers, Dale Beaumont. Secrets of Successful Entrepreneurs Exposed brings readers up close and personal with highly successful entrepreneurs in a range of industries, delving into the secrets behind their business mindset and entrepreneurial success. For Sean, the journey has been both challenging and rewarding, resulting in a level of success beyond his expectations. “I remember reading a quote by Henry Ford that said, ‘When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the aeroplane takes off against the wind, not with it’,” Sean says in the book. “This has really stuck by me throughout my business journey. There were times at the start when I doubted myself. I would think back to this quote and tell myself that if I can just WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer push through a bit of pain, the ride will get better. “Having your own business means your income is only Setting up a new business is always fraught with uncertainty. determined by how hard you work and how well you run But for Newcastle master painter Sean Hersee, it has been a your business. a wide range of projects, from residential jobs repainting interiors, to giving new homes their first coats of paint. The business has also helped breathe new life into a range of commercial spaces across the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie region. Sean prides himself on the culture he has developed within his business and the pride with which his team present themselves on the job – something he believes is a clear point of difference between SAGE Painting and its competitors. The quality of their work has also earned them numerous awards and accolades, including winning Regional WorldSkills Awards, being named the Master Builders Sub-contractor of the Year and being a Small Business Champion finalist. But Sean said all the awards and trophies presented by industry experts paled in comparison to the bright smiles and gratitude he and his team have received from happy homeowners. These days Sean’s success has allowed him to trade in his paintbrush to focus on growing the business, a luxury that has allowed him to spend more time with his young family and indulge in his passion for competitive triathlons. The success of the business has also allowed him to develop a healthy investment property portfolio, which he hopes will one day provide enough passive income to allow himself and his wife to enjoy an early retirement. Before then though Sean has set himself and his team another goal – for the business to become the best painting company in Australia. With paint practically running through his veins, and an entrepreneurial spirit that encourages him to take chances and set the bar high, it seems only a matter of time before Sean achieves that goal as well. COATES HIRE NEWCASTLE 500
More to See (and Do) in 2018! Last year we witnessed the incredible success of the biggest sporting event in our city's history, the Supercars Australia – Newcastle 500, which generated more than $30 million in economic benefits for the city. Now the anticipation is building as we head into a race weekend with even more to see and do this year. We're stretching the high-octane atmosphere well beyond the race precinct, adding seven activities across six locations over the race weekend. Entertain Newcastle is for all residents and visitors to the city, not just race-goers, and will appeal to foodies, families and people of all ages. A Supercars drivers' signing session with a cruise down Beaumont Street, an early Christmas on Darby Street and Disney the Pixar Cars Truck Tour, are just a few of the events planned for Hamilton, Cooks Hill, Civic Park and Hunter Street Mall. The festival starts Thursday 22 November with all 26 Supercars drivers visiting Hamilton and runs to Sunday 25 November with a three-day family fun zone featuring Disney the Pixar Cars Truck Tour including Mack the Transporter in Civic Park from Friday. The weekend is packed full of entertainment for the whole family, with legendary Scottish rock band Simple Minds headlining the Saturday night concert celebration, supported by Aussie favourites, Birds of Tokyo.
I invite everyone to come into the city to be part of these great events and enjoy the atmosphere as we proudly host tens of thousands of visitors to our region. We want everyone to share in the fun of the event and for businesses across the city to benefit from the Newcastle 500, which brought an unprecedented $30 million windfall into the Newcastle's local economy last year. In 2017 the Supercars Finale served as a spectacular advertisement for the city and this year's will showcase a newly revitalised city centre. Hosting the Newcastle 500 maiden race clearly demonstrated and strengthened the city's capacity to host major events, showcased our beautiful city to the world, and celebrated Novocastrian pride. In addition to the many local businesses and workers who helped make the Newcastle 500 such a success, I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who spent time helping visitors, promoting the city and offering a taste of Novocastrian hospitality. We could not have done it without you. We are so proud to bring the race back to Newcastle this year with even more fun and exciting activities. I look forward to joining everyone at Entertain Newcastle. Have a great weekend in Newcastle.

3 TIPS FOR BETTER FUEL EFFICIENCY No one wants to spend more money on fuel than they have to. Here are some tips on how you can save money on fuel simply by driving smarter.
1.
CHECK YOUR TYRE PRESSURE
The air in your tyres can have a major impact on the car’s performance, ensuring your tyres are filled with the correct pressures is vital. Underinflated tyres will increase resistance and friction against the road, making the car work harder and therefore increasing its fuel consumption.
2.
REGULAR MAINTENANCE
You’d be surprised how much of a difference regular servicing can make to your car’s fuel economy. If you keep running costs low, you’ll also keep fuel costs down. Only one in three Australian drivers realised the impact regular maintenance and tyre inflation can have on fuel costs. Source: Whichcar.com.au
3.
ACCELERATE SPARINGLY
When you accelerate, you increase the car’s revs, and the more the car revs, the more petrol it uses. Avoid unnecessary acceleration and repetitive braking. 33 per cent of Australians “do not know that harsh acceleration and braking can have a dramatic effect on their car’s fuel consumption.” Source: Whichcar.com.au

Excitement levels are shifting up a gear in Newcastle’s city centre, with motorsports fans counting down to one of the biggest weekends on their race calendars – the finale of the Supercars Championship. But with four days of high-octane activities planned across a range of precincts, it’s not just race-goers set to be entertained this month when Newcastle hosts its largest event of the year. The Coates Hire Newcastle 500 will roll into the city on November 23-25, bringing with it millions of dollars’ worth of finely-tuned race cars, the best V8 drivers in the country and tens of thousands of motorsports fans eager to see who will cross the line first when the chequered flag falls. This will be the second consecutive year Newcastle has played host to the final round of the Supercars series, with races to be contested on a challenging 2.6km street circuit that runs through the eastern end of the Newcastle CBD,
taking in scenic views along Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle and Nobby’s beaches and Newcastle Harbour. With four support categories adding to the racing schedule throughout the weekend, including the SuperUtes Series that features Warners Bay driver Charlotte Poynting, there will be plenty of on-track thrills to keep fans occupied. But the action won’t just be contained to the main racing precinct, with a concerted effort this year to activate a number of areas in Newcastle and Hamilton with events designed for both race-goers and residents. City of Newcastle has been working with Newcastle Now and the Hamilton Business Chamber on a range of activities that will bring locals back into the city during the Newcastle 500, while also encouraging Supercars patrons to explore the region. Offering a festival atmosphere, the Entertain Newcastle program promises to create vibrant spaces that will help local businesses make the most of the major event weekend. Newcastle Now Executive Manager Richard Christian said research amongst local businesses identified a desire to create a campaign that would primarily encourage locals to continue to engage with the city centre throughout the Newcastle 500, even if they weren’t attending the event itself.
“We’ve put together, in consultation with the business community, a whole series of activations that will primarily attract local residents into the city, but will also serve as an attraction for the people that are going to the event,” he said. “We wanted to make sure we have some things happening that are going to welcome local residents and invite them into the city even if they're not going to Supercars, just to engage with the city and be a part of the festival atmosphere that’s happening on that weekend. “From a Business Improvement Association’s perspective, we’re very much focused on trying to derive benefit for the businesses in the city from the event. It’s very important that our local residents and local communities engage with those businesses and support those businesses throughout the year, including that weekend.” Planning for the Entertain Newcastle program was focused on a number of different precincts in Newcastle and Hamilton including Beaumont Street, Gregson Park, Darby Street, Civic Park, the Hunter Street Mall and Market Street, as well as the city’s East. Richard said the events targeted a wide demographic of people, with something for all ages to enjoy. The program will kick off with the Hamilton Super Start-Up from 4.30pm on Thursday, November 22, where motorsports fans will be given a chance to get up close and personal with their favourite race car drivers. All 26 Supercars drivers will take part in a signing session at Gregson Park, with a live broadcast of the trackside program, children’s activities and car displays adding to the V8 vibes and party atmosphere. A driver cruise from the park down Beaumont Street will follow to draw people into the business precinct, with businesses offering late night trading as well as a range of entertainment and deals throughout the evening. The action moves to the city centre the following day, with the Newy Super Breakfast helping race fans fuel up for a big day trackside. Enjoy tasty breakfast offers by local cafés in Market and Hunter Streets from 7am–10am on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The Super Breakfast is designed to capture the crowd en route to the race precinct, giving event-goers an opportunity to sample delicious offerings from local businesses, or stock up on handy trackside supplies including sunscreen. Racegoers wanting a break from the on-track action and residents with a keen interest in technology will also be encouraged into the Hunter Street Mall from Friday to ► www.intouchmagazine.com.au | 25
Sunday to see the Newcastle Innovation Showcase, presented by the University of Newcastle, TAFE, Climate Council and City of Newcastle Smart City Team. Running from 8am to 3pm each day, it will highlight the latest environmentally-friendly electric vehicles including a variety of Tesla models, as well as prototype race cars, a race simulator and robots playing soccer from the University of Newcastle’s cutting-edge robotics department. An augmented reality art exhibition will fuse art and technology in a whole new way, while the City of Newcastle will showcase its efforts to help create a smarter and more innovative Newcastle with a presentation from the Smart City team. A range of roving entertainers will also help activate the mall, with local businesses trading throughout Hunter Street. The youngest members of the family will also be well catered for, with the Newcastle Now Family Fun Zone taking over Civic Park from 8am to 4pm Friday through Sunday. The Disney Pixar Cars Truck Tour will roll into Newcastle for three days, offering children the chance to strike a victory pose on the Champion’s Podium with Mack the Transporter, check out the Crazy Eight’s Track, get creative in the Cars Play Zone and wear themselves out on the Cars inflatable slide and obstacle course. There will be an ice cream truck in the park each day, face painting available from 9am – 12pm on both Saturday and Sunday and a special two-hour hoola-hoop workshop with Ruby the Clown on Sunday, November 25 from 11am – 1pm. There will be plenty of things to do once the sun goes down as well, with Darby Street Turns It On lighting up the Cooks Hill precinct from 5pm on Friday, November 23. An ideal night for locals to get some friends together and celebrate Friday night at the city’s popular dining destination, with live music kicking off from 5pm in a range of venues, as well as great food and late-night trading. A festive spirit will also arrive in time for the Supercars, with businesses simultaneously turning on their Christmas lights to illuminate the street from 8pm.

SUPER-CHARLOTTE CLAIMS HOME-TRACK ADVANTAGE
WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer
She may not have finished as high on the overall standings as she would have liked, but 2018 has certainly been a standout year of opportunities for Warners Bay race car driver Charlotte Poynting.
The 20-year-old capped off her third Aussie Racing Cars season with a solid string of finishes on the Gold Coast last month. The results saw her finish 9th for the round, which is the highest round result for a female in the history of the class, although it wasn’t good enough to overcome her earlier season form, leaving her outside the top 10 on the overall drivers point score for the season. Despite admitting disappointment over her “unlucky” season, Poynting said there had been plenty of other highlights this year including the chance to switch disciplines to secure a start on her home track later this month. Usually found behind the wheel of a Chevrolet Camaro in the Aussie Racing Cars, Poynting will slide into the driver’s seat of a much larger and more powerful newly-built Toyota Hilux to contest the last round of the SuperUtes Series, which will be held in Newcastle on November 23-25. The race is one the supporting rounds of the final event of the Supercars Championship, the Newcastle 500, which is returning to the specially constructed coastal street circuit for the second consecutive year. Poynting was lucky enough to be the first person to officially drive the Newcastle track in 2017 as part of the Aussie Racing Cars practice. However, with Newcastle not falling on their race calendar in 2018, the home-grown driver knew she would have to broaden her racing horizons if she wanted to hear the cheer of a local crowd again this year. “The team I race with, Western Sydney Motorsport, had two guys already racing in the SuperUtes series who raced Aussie Cars with us last year,” she said. “My team boss was looking for something for me to get in for Newcastle, as Aussie Racing Cars aren't at Newcastle
this year. As a result we found ourselves tossing up between the SuperUte or a Toyota '86, and it just seemed fitting to get in the SuperUtes as the team already had a lot of prior knowledge and a third ute on the way, too.
"I’m so excited. The Newcastle event last year was by far my favourite race weekend. It was a completely different feeling doing it at home and having such a big support team and being able to have my family and all my friends there, and the crowd support was just so amazing. So I'm very excited to get back there."

Craig Lowndes (L) & Steve Richards (R) - 2018 Bathurst Champions
Still Plenty of Fuel in the Tank for Craig Lowndes WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer
He’s the most popular V8 driver in Australian motorsport, with an unrivalled record on the track and a support base that breaks through traditional race fan rivalries. Now, after more than two decades behind the wheel, Craig Lowndes is taking his foot off the accelerator, and announcing his retirement from full-time driving. The Triple Eight Race Engineering driver will offer a final farewell to fans the only way he knows how, with a fullthrottle performance in the last race of the 2018 Supercars Championship – the Newcastle 500. Returning to the specially-built street circuit for the second consecutive year, the Newcastle 500 will be held from November 23–25, offering Hunter fans an up-close and 34 | www.intouchmagazine.com.au
personal chance to show their support for one of the true icons of the sport. After a controversial crash forced Lowndes out of the race with just two laps to go in 2017, the 44-year-old will be hoping for a far more satisfying finale in Newcastle this month. “Newcastle was a spectacular track... I love the circuit, love the layout, the infrastructure is great. I've not spoken to any driver that doesn't like it,” he told intouch Magazine late last month. “Last year's results didn't, unfortunately, go our way with the last lap; it’s something that we’re certainly not wanting to repeat. “For me, I've already done two of the three things that hopefully we can achieve (to finish this season), and the last one is to try and maintain fourth position in the championship. We’ve got a reasonably healthy gap over Dave Reynolds, but with 600 points up for grabs (in the final two rounds of the season) it's still obviously a position we need to keep defending and make sure we score points.”
Regardless of how he performs in Newcastle, Lowndes has already achieved somewhat of a fairy-tale finish for his final full-time season. Since announcing his retirement plans in July, the driver has claimed the coveted Bathurst 1000 title – for the seventh time in his career – which in turn helped Lowndes and teammate Steven Richards clinch the 2018 Enduro Cup. It was the second time Lowndes has held the Cup aloft, the first win coming alongside former co-driver Warren Luff in 2013. As far as a single season goes, outside of the overall Championship win, it doesn’t get much bigger than these two achievements. “It’s probably like a movie script, to be honest (to win Bathurst), I think that you couldn't script it any better,” he said. “In my last full-time drive at Bathurst, to get into the top 10 shootout was really one of our major aims because going back next year as a co-driver I won't be qualifying the car - that's the main driver's role – so for me to have the opportunity was really special. “Then to have that eight-second lead at the end of the race, to be able to really enjoy that last lap, which I really haven't had a chance to do in all the other wins that I’ve had because I've always had someone behind me biting at my heels trying to pass me. So to have that, to be able to hear and see the crowd on that last lap, it was really special.” Bathurst’s famed Mount Panorama circuit has held a special place in Lowndes’ heart throughout his career, beginning with a gutsy move to overtake stalwart John Bowe for the lead late in the race, before eventually finishing second in his debut at the track in 1994. ►

He sits tied with Jim Richards, father of his co-driver Steven, on seven wins at the Mount Panorama track, with only Lowndes’ mentor and the undoubted “King of the Mountain”, Peter Brock, left in front with nine victories. “You grow up watching (Bathurst), sitting at home on the couch as a boy hoping one day you get an opportunity to drive and race there, and yeah ’94 was definitely my career turning point,” he said. “It was a bit of a fairy-tale sort of start, and I’ll always enjoy going back, regardless if I'm a driver or not, it definitely holds a special place in my heart for me.” While his Bathurst victories are among his most treasured achievements, there’s certainly no shortage to choose from as the most successful driver in Australian motorsport history. Lowndes was the first Australian driver to reach 100 Championship wins at the sport’s most elite level (achieved in 2015) and holds the record for the most race wins in the history of the Touring Car and V8 Supercar competitions. He is a three-time Australian Champion (1996, 1998, 1999) and the recipient of a record five Barry Sheene Medals, the sport’s best and fairest award. Off the track, he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2012 for services to his sport and the community, including his charitable work with the RSPCA, Violence Against Women and his continual work on road safety. Despite having driven for both Holden and Ford during his career, the controversial move hasn’t dampened his overwhelming popularity amongst parochial race car fans, who will no doubt be out in force to farewell him during his final race of the season in Newcastle. “When you have lean years and don't have performances the fans are always the ones that keep you going, I've always said the fans are the backbone of motor racing and it's true,” Lowndes said. “They come to races, especially yesterday (at the Gold Coast 600) when the storm came through we’re sitting in the cars wanting to race and they’re still there with the
umbrellas, wet and soaking and still supporting. “I remember years ago when we were swapping from Holden to Ford I went and spoke to Brock, and he said that you're never really going to lose anything – you'll lose 50 per cent of the Holden fans because they’re not going to like you defecting, but then you’re going to gain 50 per cent of Ford fans because they’re going to love you coming across. So, in the end, you're not going to lose anything. I think for me that sort of stood true, I've got great Ford and Holden fans all around the place. For me, it's been fantastic to have that element.” While the Newcastle 500 represents Lowndes’ last race as a full-time driver, there’s still plenty of fuel left in his tank. With plans to be back in the co-driver’s seat again next year for a number of the endurance races, as well as taking up some opportunities in other styles of cars, Lowndes has assured his fans the chequered flag isn’t about to fall on his career on the track. “I still get a buzz from driving, and I don't think that will ever change,” he said.
“I’ve been lucky enough to be in the sport for over two decades, and when I first started I probably halved the average age of a driver, now I’m doubling it so I've gone full circle and I'm still enjoying it.
“But while I'm still enjoying it the time is right to step down out of the full-time of Supercars, and go and explore other things if we can and drive other race cars. No doubt I won't be disappearing too much, that’s for sure.” ■

HELP WITH IBS
A Common Health Problem WORDS ANNE WARD – Mindinsight
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is one of the most common problems seen by medical practitioners, accounting for roughly 12% of visits to GP’s. IBS can affect children and adults. Because IBS has no clear medical cause, it is regarded as a functional gastrointestinal disorder. Although symptoms vary, IBS is generally characterised by chronic abdominal cramping or pain, and altered bowel movement. Other symptoms may include bloating, and sensitivity to certain foods. Symptoms can fluctuate over time and can vary in severity among people. IBS can significantly impact a person’s quality of life, with increased medical visits and restrictions on activities.
What Causes IBS? The cause of IBS has not been clearly established. However, there is a large body of scientific research that has identified a range of factors that appear to play a role. In mild cases, the evidence points to changes in the gut microbiota, possibly as a result of gastrointestinal infection. In these cases, medical and dietary management can help relieve symptoms. In more severe cases, a range of factors appear to play a role. These include genetic susceptibility, family/personality factors, and psychological factors, including the coping mechanisms that people use to manage stress. More severe cases can also be accompanied by anxiety and depression.

Psychological Treatment Options Although some people may find benefit from medication, there is no established medical cure. Psychological approaches, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), have been found to reduce the impact of symptoms. There is also a strong body of evidence supporting the use of clinical hypnosis. Cognitive hypnotherapy combines CBT with clinical hypnosis. Longterm benefits have been shown in terms of reduction in pain, Brain-Gut Communication improvement in smooth muscle activity and bowel function, a The brain-gut axis is part of the nervous system. The Benefits to Health and Wellbeing at Urth Fitness
4.
WORDS REMMIE COCKRELL – Urth Fitness
There are enormous benefits of incorporating sauna bathing and massage into your training regime, for better health and wellbeing. It’s for this reason that, as part of their program, members at Urth Fitness have unlimited access to the centre’s spa facilities. We’re often asked about the benefits of incorporating wellbeing into training, so here’s our guide to a few more common practices. Benefits of Infra-Red Sauna Saunas have become very popular over the past decade, mainly due to the recognition of health benefits: 1. Helps weight loss – During a sauna session, the heart rate increases substantially from the dry heat. Studies suggest

that a 20-minute session at 65oC burns up to 500 calories. The body’s metabolism speeds up similarly to the effects of physical exercise and is a great method to lose weight. Makes the immune system stronger – Saunas help to create a stronger immune system, by producing more white blood cells (WBC). WBCs are the bodies defence mechanisms to fight against infections and diseases. Regular sauna users will, therefore, have a higher WBC count, leading to a healthier lifestyle. Helps improve endurance performance – Regular use of the sauna will increase the bodies threshold for heat tolerance. Increasing this tolerance, leads to increases in red blood cells and blood flow, resulting in a reduced cardiovascular strain, lowering the heart rate at the same workload. These cardiovascular improvements have been shown to improve endurance in all athletes. Helps recovery from workouts – During bouts of exercise, the body breaks down tissue protein to use as energy, which increases the body’s level of nitrogen. Excess nitrogen is usually removed from the blood by the kidneys, then expelled in the urine. With regular use of the sauna, excess nitrogen is also released through sweat speeding up recovery between workouts. Anti-ageing and skin purifications – Premature wrinkling, acne, psoriasis and other blemishes can be the result of toxins and bacteria negatively impacting the body. Regular access to the sauna can help release these toxins hidden under the skin and make you look – and feel – younger and healthier! Lower blood pressure (BP) – Whether you have elevated BP due to underlying health issues or stress, a 20-minute session in the sauna can lead to immediate and long-term reductions in BP.

Benefits of Massage Training without a recovery programme, over time can lead to preventable acute/chronic injury from increased muscle tightness and decreased range of motion. Heavily exercised muscles can lose their capacity to relax and lack flexibility which is often linked to muscle soreness and predisposes individuals to injuries. Blood flow is also poor through tight muscles which results in localised pain. The benefits of massage as part of a training programme are: Maintenance/Prevention – To ensure areas of acute tightness are managed to prevent injuries and to maintain joint range of motion. Recovery – Massage alleviates muscle soreness associated with training. Regular massage has been shown to shorten recovery time between workouts by maximising the supply of nutrients and oxygen through increased blood flow and enhancing the elimination of metabolic waste by-products. Relaxation – Allowing the body and mind to switch off for a short period of time enables you to feel fresh and focused. It also provides you with a positive psychological benefit, acting as a stress reliever. Rehabilitation – Massage plays an important part in speeding up the rehabilitation process following an injury. Massage increases the blood flow, which increases the nutrients and oxygen to the area, and reduces swelling and tightness in both the injured and non-injured muscles that are compensating the injured area. It also ensures the muscle fibres repair in a strong, flexible manner reducing the formation of scar tissue. Enhances Performance – The overall objective of a massage is to help you reach optimal performance through injury-free training.

LIVE YOUR LIST
Living a Life Without Regret WORDS KIM-CHERIE DAVIDSON - Live Your Bucket List
The term “Bucket List” is one most of us know, thanks to the movie The Bucket List (2007). Basically, it a list of all the goals you want to achieve, dreams you want to fulfil and life adventures you desire to experience before you die. Some people like the word bucket list and some don’t. There are other names for it – an anti-bucket list, life list, things-to-do list, call it what you like – to me, it is an action list to live my life without regret. As for me, I didn’t really have one until after I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in 2014. It was a series of events that lead to this mountain that changed my life.
In the mid-1990's, I had a bone tumour removed from my face that meant a face reconstruction with 24 titanium pins. The operation was successful. However, when the drain was removed from neck, my jugular vein was nicked. I started to bleed to death in front of them. As fate would have it, my doctor was in the hospital car park and after a five-day intensive care stint; all was well. Back on the ward, I swore to live my life differently and wrote a list of the things I wanted to do before I actually died – they were either adventures or activities. However, I let life get in the Kilimanjaro peak way, and then 16 years later I received a wake-up call. Within one year, three friends passed away from cancer – one was my work bestie, and it knocked me for a six. It had me questioning my life. How was I going to live it? Then the opportunity to climb Mount Kilimanjaro came up – it was like a nudge from the universe – what was I going to do with it? On September 15, 2012, I reached the summit of Kili, the world’s highest standing mountain at 5985 metres. It was one of the hardest things I have ever done! We left at midnight – it was freezing – my progress was slow due to the high altitude playing havoc with my asthma. However, my vitals, such as oxygen percentage and heart rate, were good. So, the head guide Amos decided he and I would climb separately from my buddies. We plugged along for hours. Just before daylight, I wanted to give up. And said to Amos: “Let’s go down after I’d seen the sunrise over the Tanzanian plains and Kili’s snow”. He smiled and nodded. When the sun rose it was spectacular, I began to warm up and feel better. Amos said see up there; “It is Stellar Point, the first

Here are some useful dental and mouth care tips:
Why Regular Dental Check Ups are Important Taking good care of your teeth and gums on a daily basis can help reduce dental and even health problems you might experience in the future. A regular dental check-up is important regardless of your age because it will help keep your teeth and gums healthy. Checkups are not just for kids! Both you and your children should have a regular dental visit at least every six months or as recommended by your dentist. At a dental check up, your dentist will check for cavities and X-rays may be taken to detect cavities between your teeth. The exam will also include a check for plaque and tartar on your teeth. Plaque is a clear, sticky layer of bacteria. If it is not removed, it can harden and become tartar. You cannot remove tartar with brushing and flossing. If plaque and tartar build up on your teeth, they can cause oral diseases. Next, your gums will be checked to assess the depth of the spaces between your teeth and gums. With healthy gums, the spaces are shallow. When people have gum disease, the spaces may become deeper.
summit, about an hour.” I nodded. Then from Stellar Point, he pointed to the second summit and the peak. I nodded. We set off and made it – to the top of the world’s highest freestanding mountain. It was amazing, exhilarating and exhausting! Yes, I did it – climbed Kili. So what else could I do? One of the first things was to produce a film on our trip called Kilimanjaro – Hakuna Matata. It was shown on the big screen in the local theatre and sits on YouTube. Then I started to seize other opportunities including the Outback Marathon, skydiving over Lake Macquarie, sleeping under the stars at Redhead, climbing three peaks in South America for charity, Annapurna trek and Kathmandu Valley earthquake recovery project. Still to tick off is seeing Mt Everest, the Taj Mahal and Northern Lights as well as learning to sing, flamenco classes oh – and did I mention – I’m also going to write a book! The adventure at the very top is to keep spreading the word to Live Your Bucket list – regardless of your gender or age, draw up a list and start doing it. It’s your life, and you can live your dreams.
Your teeth will also be cleaned. Brushing and flossing help clean the plaque from your teeth, but you can't remove tartar at home. During cleaning, your dentist will use special tools to remove tartar. After any tartar is removed from your teeth, they may be polished to remove any surface stains followed by flossing. Your dentist will use floss to make sure the areas between your teeth are clean. Our four conveniently located surgeries offer appointments with male or female dentists, and we can process your Private Health Insurance and Medicare claims on the spot saving you time by not having to visit your Health Fund. We also provide $1,000 worth of basic dental services to eligible children paid for by Medicare.
• Maintain a good standard of oral hygiene. Brush your teeth using a fluoride toothpaste twice a day to remove plaque – once in the morning and once before you go to bed. • Thorough brushing with either a manual or electric toothbrush should take around two minutes. • Replace your toothbrush or toothbrush head every three months. • Floss daily between your teeth to remove plaque. • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. • Avoid too many sweet foods and sugary drinks and whenever possible limit them to mealtimes. • Avoid drinking too much coffee or alcohol. • Have regular dental check-ups, depending on factors such as your age, general health and dental history. • Antibacterial mouthwashes may also help fight plaque and bacteria. • Chew sugar-free gum to encourage the flow of saliva in your mouth. • To keep your breath fresh, try to limit the amount of alcohol, garlic, onions, curries and strongflavoured fish in your diet. • If you smoke, try to cut down or quit.

Prince Charming Brings Shelter from the Storm WORDS CHLOE O'SULLIVAN - On Tour With the Kid
Princess Diana, aside from being an icon, was a truly decent human being. The image of her that stays with me is the Princess shaking hands with HIV patients without wearing gloves. This may not seem like a big deal now, but in April 1987 it was groundbreaking. At that time there were medical staff refusing to treat people and so much misinformation about how HIV was transmitted. That one touch, that moment of kindness changed public opinion and pushed politicians into action. Even from a distance, you could see her joy in being a mum. That she was doing what she could to make their lives as normal as possible, and that she adored her boys. When she passed away, the world was heartbroken for the two young Princes, and the images of them dominated the news. Thirteen days later, my boyfriend died unexpectedly. Dean was funny and kind. I loved him. The grief which made the world come to a standstill, and left me quietly crying alone in my kitchen felt so polar opposite, yet intrinsically linked in my mind. What got me through the grief and the guilt of not being physically with him when he died, was my family and Dean’s mum, Valerie, who made me feel like part of the family even after he was gone. Every year to follow, when they would talk about Diana’s anniversary on the news, it was just a reminder that Dean’s anniversary was on its way. Fast forward 21 years and Val, who I had remained close to, is given a stage 4 cancer diagnosis in the same month that I am asked to organise the entertainment for the Royal reception in Victoria Park to welcome Prince Harry and Meghan to Dubbo. I knew Val was excited to see the young Royal couple. Thirsty Merc seemed like the perfect choice for the entertainment, given base player Phil Stack grew up in the area. It was the night before the Royals were due to arrive. Val was in the hospital, and it was clear that she was not well enough to come down to the park. I have been to plenty of events like this over the years and know that the likelihood you will get close to the guests of honour is pretty slim. I thought if I got a photo of them on stage and took it up to her in the hospital she would be happy.
Prince Harry hands over his umbrella to Phil Stack from Thirsty Merc to shelter 'the kid' from the pouring rain.
I woke the morning of the event to a phone call just before 7am. It was the kids to say Val had taken a bad turn overnight and might not make it through the day. Ten minutes later, she was gone. I was heartbroken, but I’m in the kind of job where things don’t stop because you are having a bad day. I have learned to hold things in until work is over. I cried in the bathroom; I made sure the band were ready to go, and we drove into the reception. The kid was by my side as she always is – looking the part with a tiara firmly planted on her head! As Prince Harry and Meghan arrived onsite, the sky opened, and the rain began to pour. As we stood to watch the welcome ceremony, I looked over, and there was Prince Harry and Meghan, standing right next to my baby girl. Harry opened his umbrella and looked down at the kid as she shivered from the cold and motioned to Phil Stack from Thirsty Merc who was standing on the other side of her to take his umbrella to keep her dry. The footage that played worldwide of Meghan lovingly sheltering her husband from the rain was made all the better as only those of us standing there knew what had just happened. A small act of kindness, not because anyone was looking, just because he is a decent man. As we left, the kid looked up at me and said: “I wish Aunty Val got to see them”. In my heart, I know she did. On the same day, she saw her baby boy for the first time in 21 years.

Putting Anger Behaviour into the Past WORDS BRETT CAMERON - Cameron Hypnotics
Would you like to be back in control – in a good way? Do you “lose it” and later regret it? Do you “react” instead of “respond”? Do you find yourself shouting at your children, partner or other drivers for no real reason? How many jobs or relationships have you lost due to anger? Whenever we get angry, we lose the ability to think clearly, to act logically, to be reasonable – to just make sense. We then begin to second guess ourselves. The stress rises, the blood pressure increases, and then – snap! You are driving, and everything is OK until another driver does something that annoys you and then… the green monster takes over and growls at everyone. Every other driver is the enemy. Your passengers cop it as well. Right now the rational part of you thinks that is crazy, but at that moment of rage, there is no rational part of you. It doesn’t have to be that way. I have worked with many people helping them to separate the person from the behaviour. The person is not the behaviour. I have helped them to find the ability to be calm and relaxed and in control. On the emotions ladder, anger is often associated with fear. So if you get angry, it is a good time to stop and ask yourself “what am I afraid of right now?” Anger can also be a learned behaviour. I had a client who could clearly identify a moment when as a child he threw a tantrum in a store until he got what he wanted. He saw a new bike that he just had to have. He said he could remember leaving that store brimming with joy. It became a new behaviour. He learnt that If you don’t get your way then scream and shout and maybe get violent. If he wanted to get his way, he knew what to do. And after the tantrum, the reward would arrive with a brain burst of pleasurable dopamine. It worked every time. Until he discovered that he couldn’t maintain adult relationships as the child behaviour reared its ugly head when what he needed was a reasonable, mature adult behaviour.
It might be a simple thing like being afraid of not being in control or a fear of being caught out. It might be a fear of not getting your way. Or as in a lot of cases, you just don’t know why you get angry. It is a behaviour that has been with you for so long that it seems to be a part of you. It is the way that you are wired. But it doesn’t have to be. People change every day. So can you. Hypnosis is a very effective modality in dealing with behavioural issues. To move beyond angry behaviour, we must raise our (EQ) emotional intelligence. We do this by improving: 1. Personal competence (self-awareness and selfmanagement) 2. Social competence (social awareness and relationship management) Most clients will experience amazing change after a tailored three-session program. Over three sessions of hypnotherapy and NLP, I will help the client to: • Gain awareness of self. Becoming aware of the origin of behaviours. • Learn the power of being “in” control, not “out” of control. • Be more confident in communication. • Gain a working understanding of breath control and mindfulness. • Know when someone is “pushing your buttons” and have the ability to be disconnected from those buttons… and more. Are you ready to put the anger into the past? Check out my 3-Session Anger Management program for $399. You might want to check the range of self-hypnosis MP3's on Spotify and iTunes by searching Cameron Hypnotics. Health Fund rebates apply where applicable.

Family Open Day To Mark a Major Milestone In February 2019, Orica Kooragang Island (KI) will turn 50. To mark this significant milestone, the company is planning a special Family Open Day for past and present employees. General Manager Bertus De Villiers said the event would feature site tours, displays, kids’ activities and more. “The 50th-anniversary family open day will not only be an opportunity to celebrate the site’s achievements but also an occasion where we can recognise and thank the people who have worked at the site.” “Over five decades, the KI facility has been through a lot of change. In the past six years alone, more than $300 million has been spent on the biggest improvement program in the site’s history.” “We encourage anyone who has ever worked at the Kooragang Island site to attend the event, see what’s changed and catch up with old colleagues,” said Mr De Villiers. Orica Kooragang Island is an integral part of the company’s global operations and makes an important contribution to the local region. It also plays a key role in the New South Wales economy, supplying critical
products to the mining and infrastructure, agriculture, water supply, food, dairy and medical sectors. The facility includes an ammonia plant, three nitric acid plants, two ammonium nitrate plants and a product dispatch facility. Since operations began in 1969, it’s estimated the site has produced more than nine million tonnes of ammonia, nearly 10 million tonnes of nitric acid and more than 11 million tonnes of ammonium nitrate. Orica Kooragang Island is also a significant employer in the Newcastle area, with approximately 150 permanent employees and around 40 regular contractors. During planned maintenance shutdowns there can be up to 400 extra workers on site. Community investment and sponsorship activities are a central pillar of the site’s engagement approach. Orica aims to make a lasting and positive contribution to the community by supporting local initiatives and events. Last year, the company invested $272,000 in community sponsorships, grants and donations to help 42 local beneficiaries. For enquiries about Orica Kooragang Island’s 50th-anniversary celebration in February 2019, email kooragang@orica. com or call 1800 789 044. RSVPs will be essential.

RICH HISTORY WOVEN INTO 130TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS
WORDS MICHELLE MEEHAN - Features Writer
When it comes to pride in their history, Adamstown Rosebud players wear their heart on their sleeves. In 2019, they’ll take this show of spirit to the next level with the football club preparing to don a heritageinspired strip to commemorate the club’s 130th anniversary.
the limelight, but the Newcastle area was really the cradle of football in Australia. “I think when you’re in the club there is a special attachment to the place. The football culture has changed a lot in that now… there’s a lot of people that kind of move from one club to another, but when they do land at Adamstown, they then understand the history behind it.” Highlighting that history is one of the club’s goals for 2019, with the new uniform enabling them to provide a visual reminder of the past. While it will still sport the familiar red and green colours Established in 1889 at the suggestion of locally-based soccer that Adamstown has long been known for, the playing shirt will fan Reverend John Penman, Adamstown Rosebud is one of also feature a diagonal stripe from the right shoulder to the the oldest clubs still existence in Australia. left waist as a tribute to the design worn by the Adamstown Currently playing in the Northern NSW Football National team of 1896. Club president Andrew Licata said Adamstown has a long “We feel a responsibility towards our young players, and and rich history of which it is understandably proud. so for us, it’s not just about developing good footballers, it's “The Hunter Valley area or Newcastle area, was where trying to develop good people that, you know, will make a good some of the first football clubs were formed in Australia and contribution to society that may not necessarily be football,” we’d be amongst the earliest clubs in Australia,” he said. he said. “That’s probably a fact that’s not really that well known “I think it's important to be able to link to the history and around the place. the club and have contributed. We’ve had people who were prominent footballers for the club but then went off to war and became ANZAC heroes; there are other people who have made other contributions in all sort of walks of life within Newcastle and in even broader areas. “We talk about the Australian internationals that we’ve had, often those who have played international football are obviously the ones that people remember, but there’s lots of other people that contributed in great ways that made the club survive over these many years.” Of course, you can’t talk about Adamstown without mentioning its long line-up of players who have gone on to represent Australia, including their most capped representative Ray Baartz, who played for the Socceroos 59 times from 1967-1974. The illustrious list of internationals also includes Col Curran, who donned the green and gold 35 times and in 1974 became the first - and only - Novocastrian to play in the men’s World Cup. Now in his seventies, Curran still recalls his time as a Rosebud with great fondness. “I was at Maitland (football club) and then in about 1962, myself and Ray Baartz, who was also at Maitland, were asked to go to Adamstown, and we did,” he said. “I was playing first grade at 15, and I was there until 1970 when I went to Sydney. “It was a club that you didn't want to leave, but you had to leave back in those days because they very rarely took people from the North, Northern New South Wales, to make the Australian side and you had to go to Sydney to be under the eyes of the coaches. That's the only reason I left. “Other than that it was the best club I’ve ever been to, and played for. “I couldn’t wait to get to training of a night, the team spirit was fantastic, and you knew everybody, and you just had a ball. It was a great club to play for.” With three senior squads (First Grade, Under 20 and Under 18), and four youth squads (Under 16, Under 15, Under 14 and Under 13 years) in the National Premium League, it’s clear Adamstown is still a great club to play for. Licata said they were looking forward to continuing that tradition now and into the future, with the help of the skilled coaching staff, passionate players, dedicated volunteers and the generous sponsors, like 2018 sponsors Avid Project Management and Newcastle United Sports Club, who provide much-needed financial support. The club is currently looking to sign sponsors for the 2019 130th Anniversary Season. Interested? For details email secretary@adamstownrosebudfc.org.au.

It’s just a hunch, but I’ll bet by the time you’re sitting down to read this you’ve already had a busy week. Work, life, running around after kids, maybe running a business. It’s nuts! Your to-do-list seems to keep growing as you pursue a successful, fulfilling life. Then, sometimes, it can all stop quite suddenly when serious illness strikes someone you know or love. Life forces you to take stock and remember what matters most — health, family, relationships and basic comforts. This is why it’s great to give. Whether you’re an individual or business owner, the benefits of contributing to your community through charities and not-forprofits (NFPs) are enormous. Of course, it can be tax effective too. Not only can your donation or sponsorship make a real difference and possibly even change lives. If you’re in business, it sets the tone for your business values. It promotes a positive vibe among employees, customers and the community. It creates peace of mind for the person or people in need — and the giver. Charlie’s Run 4 Kids (or CR4K) is a wonderful example of community and local business joining forces to help create peace of mind for a family in need. It was founded by Charlotte Carr in 2013. Charlie was eight years old, and her mission was to raise money for the paediatric oncology unit at John Hunter Children’s Hospital to make it more kid-friendly. Charlie lost her battle with neuroblastoma in 2015, but her legacy has become an annual event. Participants cover 150 kilometres over five days from Seal Rocks to Dudley and each year a different child is the focus of the event. This year CR4K raised money for the family of little Arlo Matthews. At four months old he was diagnosed with Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancer in his bladder and prostate. Arlo has chemotherapy at John Hunter Children’s Hospital while his dad Chad works seven days a week to support the family. His mum Nicole is at Arlo’s side, often in isolation due to infection risk. Grandparents help look after three brothers and sisters at home. As you can imagine, it’s tough going.
Money raised by CR4K will help take the pressure off the family while Arlo fights to get better. A number of local businesses, including DFK Crosbie, are proud sponsors of CR4K. It’s a great example of how individuals and businesses can make a difference for local families in need. Our particular sponsorship goes to the Child Life Therapy Department at John Hunter Children's Hospital. It helps fund a child life therapist, who helps kids and families stay calm while they go through stressful procedures.
"Donations and sponsorships have a big impact on the people on both sides of the balance sheet." As leading accountants and business advisers, we work with a large number of registered charities and clubs, NFPs, smallto-medium businesses and individuals, and so I know first-hand that donations and sponsorships have a big impact on the people on both sides of the balance sheet. Whether you’re an individual or business owner, I encourage you to set up an active program of community giving. I suspect you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the resulting peace of mind.

When Medical Treatment Doesn't go to Plan WORDS LIDIA MONTEVERDI - Medical Negligence Lawyer, Turner Freeman
As a patient, you are putting your health and sometimes your life in someone's hands. You trust that person to help and to fix your medical problem. Most people have positive experiences with the medical profession and achieve good outcomes. In 2016/17, only 5.5% of hospital admissions resulted in complications or adverse events. For those patients, the outcome can be physically and emotionally life-changing. Turner Freeman Lawyers has a long history of acting for such patients who have suffered adverse medical outcomes. Healthcare practitioners, hospitals and other healthcare facilities owe a duty of care to their patients to exercise reasonable care and skill. In some instances, patients do not receive gold-standard treatment and complications may arise. However, not all complications and substandard care constitute medical negligence. Often aspects of care that are frustrating and personally disappointing, such as poor bedside manner and poor communication, do not amount to negligence. One of the most common things we hear is that patients wish they had received an apology from the doctor or nurse involved in their care. In many situations, an apology goes
a long way to acknowledging the unnecessary pain and suffering a patient has been through as a result of inadequate care and treatment. Under NSW legislation, an apology is not an admission of liability. Policies exist in the public health system to encourage practitioners to apologise to patients where appropriate. Those policies, unfortunately, do not extend to private hospitals and practitioners, although the legislative protection does. In order to prove medical negligence, you must first establish that the conduct of a hospital, surgeon or other healthcare practitioner fell so far below the accepted standard of care at the time that it amounted to a breach of the duty of care. You must then show that the breach caused you to suffer a personal injury by establishing that it is more likely than not that you would have avoided your outcome if you had received an alternate course of treatment. Finally, you must show that you have suffered some harm or damage. This can broadly be classified under four headings: pain and suffering, past and future out of pocket expenses, past and future economic (wage) loss and past and future care and assistance on a commercial or gratuitous basis. The level of ongoing harm, suffering and disability directly translates to the amount of compensation you may be entitled to recover. At each step of the way, we require evidence from expert medical practitioners. In order to establish a breach of the duty of care and causation (liability), we require evidence from practitioners who would be regarded as peers of the prospective defendant. It is important to get the right opinion from the right expert; a case can be won or lost on the strength of the expert evidence. In 2016/17, NSW public hospitals paid more than $37 million in compensation. Two local hospitals, the John Hunter Hospital and Tamworth Hospital, sat at first and third
respectively on the list of highest hospital payouts. The John Hunter Hospital is the most northern tertiary hospital and major trauma centre in NSW. Because of this, it receives patients from as far as Northern NSW, Wee Waa and Moree, who require treatment across a broad range of specialities from obstetrics and emergency to cardiology and paediatrics. Mistakes are bound to happen given the sheer number of people who receive treatment in hospitals and private practice. There is a myriad of reasons behind why mistakes are actually made. Sometimes they are due to incompetence, but it may also be due to inadequate training, inexperience or system pressures including poor funding. Whatever the reason, mistakes in medical situations are costly and can have devastating consequences on already vulnerable people. Turner Freeman Lawyers has been recognised as a NSW Leading Law Firm in medical negligence for the last two years.
