PUBLISHER’S LETTER
THE THREAD ALLIANCE
Why March is The Best Month As cold as it seems every year around Barbeque Cook-off, I know from experience it is only days away from the best time of the year. It’s the time Azaleas bloom and befallen leaves return while daylight savings gives us longer days just in time for the kids’ much anticipated Spring Break. It’s official - the best month of the year is here. Highlights for March include the opening match for our own Houston Dynamos and March Madness at NRG stadium as Houston hosts the NCAA South Regionals. The latter part of the month features the PGA’s Shell Houston Open and another excuse to enjoy springtime - the Bayou City Art Festival at Memorial Park. It’s anticipation for the Astros’s opening day and yes, of course, March is the month for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. March means it’s time to test your green thumb, take in sidewalk sales and cafe lattes, and enjoy your favorite outdoor brunch spot. Yes, March is the best month of the year no matter where in the country you are - but April is pretty good too. This may be the season the Astros begin their ascent back toward the World Series. Hope springs eternal. Now, if I can just make it through lent without fail.

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month. Mayor Annise Parker has proclaimed April 2, 2015 as The Thread Alliance Day in Houston. The proclamation recognizes The Thread Alliance’s efforts to bring child abuse awareness to the forefront. Sheila Aron is the founder of the organization and declares “that all children deserve unconditional love and a childhood free of abuse.” The Thread Alliance’s mission is to provide resources to prevent the cycle of child abuse. Beginning in April, many of Houston’s finest restaurants will be participating in the organization’s annual “Blue Plate Special.” The citywide child abuse prevention awareness campaign encourages Houstonians to weave the thread of love and end the cycle of child abuse. Each restaurant participating will give a percentage of their “Blue Plate Special” to The Thread Alliance. To participate or for a list of restaurants visit www.thethreadalliance.org and help make child abuse a thing of the past.

UPPER KIRBY By David M. Young In 2001, I moved into a townhome in Upper Kirby and have seen the transformation over the past 14 years. The area has blossomed from a deteriorated central area that wasn’t sure if it was part of Montrose or River Oaks, to one of the hottest zip codes in Houston (77098) with its own identity – look for the Olde English style red telephone booths. Home to some of Houston’s finest restaurants and bars, as well as mixed use centers like West Ave, providing retail, offices and luxury apartments at the same location. Upper Kirby is undergoing an upheaval, with a focus now on the taming of Westheimer and Shepherd to bring those roads up to the standard set by Kirby Drive. Power and phone lines are being buried under ground, larger storm drainage pipes are being installed, modern durable pavement will be laid and truly walkable sidewalks with lighting are planned for completion by early 2016. Much of that run production will come via the home run, as it did last year (Carter finished second in the AL in home runs). We have three right-handed batters – Carter, Gattis and Springer who are all capable of hitting 30 plus home runs over a full season. From the left side, we have Castro, Rasmus and Singleton all proven to be able to hit the long ball. The rest of the lineup, featuring players like our batting champion Altuve, and newcomers Lowrie, and Valbuena will also be chipping in with some power but we need those guys to also be on base when the sluggers come to bat.
The Game
The downside of power production is typically more swing and miss, which leads to strikeouts. Our team has had quite a few strikeouts in the past few years and we are always cognizant of that fact and trying to minimize them. We do feel like we are making progress.
AN INTERVIEW WITH
JEFF LUHNOW Your career path is an interesting one. Tell us how you transitioned into baseball from your early career as an engineer to become the General Manager of the Houston Astros. JL: I had three careers prior to entering baseball. The first was as an engineer right out of college. The second was as a management consultant after business school. The third was as a technology entrepreneur during and after the late 90s dot com boom and bust.
How much is too much really depends on understanding the entire offensive formula – ideally the run production due to the power bats outweighs the negatives of the type of outs that are produced with those players. I’m optimistic it will, and it certainly will be fun for our fans to see the power. Who are some of the potential stars in the system that Astros fans may not know about?.
JL: We also have some notable young players I did not know how my skills and training who have yet to reach the big leagues like would translate to baseball, but I found out Mark Appel, Carlos Correa, Colin Moran and that many of the experiences I had outside Vincent Velasquez. of baseball helped me quite a bit – especially knowing how to manage people and projects Our minor league system is loaded with good and how to think critically and work towards players, and it’s difficult to single out just a few. I will point out two that tend to fly under the favorable business outcomes. radar but have the upside to be household names What has to happen for the Astros to have a winning down the road. They are both 20 years old and both played A ball last year. Brett Phillips is an record and a possible playoff berth in 2015? exciting outfielder that we drafted in 2012 who JL: We need to stay healthy, that is typically a can hit, run, catch and throw. Josh Hader is a prerequisite for good teams. The stars from last year - Altuve, Carter, McHugh, Keuchel and Qualls need to come close to repeating what they did last year. We need Springer to play a full year and pick up where he left off. The rest of our regulars just need to do what we know they can and should do. If they don’t we have options at most every position so we won’t have to expose ourselves to players that aren’t helping us win or aren’t ready to compete. That was part of our strategy in assembling this roster for 2015. Great teams usually have some unexpected strong performances from one or more players. I believe we will, whether that is from Marisnick or Singleton or someone new like Tucker or Straily.
Jeff Luhnow
In 2003, a former management consultant colleague of mine whose family was involved in baseball reached out to me to inquire if I had any interest in working for a Major League baseball team. It was completely unexpected and I was very intrigued, having been passionate about baseball my entire life! intown 24
Our division is tough, but we have a robust roster of good players with a ton of upside, so let’s play ball! There are some who say that the middle of the Astros will strike out too much. What do you say to those critics? JL: I believe this team will produce runs and give us a chance to win more ballgames as a result.
George Springer enters 2015 with high expectations
Jose is the face of the Astros for great reasons. He not only plays the game the right way and has an intense desire to succeed and win, he is a tremendous asset to the organization and the community by his attitude and work off the field. He is a humble star, and those don’t grow on trees. Last year’s Astros rookie phenom George Springer, didn't disappoint belting 20 home runs in only 78 games prior to his season ending injury? What do you expect from him in his second campaign? Astros home run leader Chris Carter
left handed starting pitcher we acquired from Baltimore in the Bud Norris trade in 2013 with an impressive repertoire of pitches who has dominated tough leagues so far in his career. Both these guys are still a few levels away from Houston but names worth keeping in mind! How did so many teams miss drafting Jose Altuve and how important is he to the Astros success? JL: Jose was signed out of the Astros academy in Venezuela. The Astros have signed more Major League players from Venezuela than any organization in baseball by a big margin, so it’s no surprise that he signed with us. I give tremendous credit to our scouts who took a chance on him at a young age.
JL: George is one of the most exciting players in the game with a combination of power and speed that can change a game at any time. Typically, it’s hard to extrapolate a half season’s worth of performance to a full season but in the case of George, who knows? No matter what, he will be an offensive force who plays excellent defense and keeps the spirits high in the dugout and clubhouse. 2015 could be huge for him, and if it is, for us too! What are the team’s goals or expectations heading into the 2015 season? JL: As a baseball executive, I have learned to steer clear of making predictions because inevitably they are wrong! Our division is strong. We are stronger every year and this
Jose Altuve - reigning AL batting champ
year we expect to take a big step forward. This roster is the best since I’ve been in Houston and therefore I expect the result will be as well. The effort will be there for sure, and now it’s just a matter of seeing it all come together on the field. I hope to see many of you at the ballpark in 2015!

STEAKS in Houston?
Ten to Try Before You Die by Marene Gustin
THE PALM If you haven’t been to The Palm in years, you need to book a table, now. After a five-month, multimillion dollar makeover, the restaurant reopened in 2013. Started in New York City in 1926, the Houston Palm location opened in 1978. A beautiful new dining room, excellent service and a quality menu make this a spot for special occasions, high-powered business meets and romantic dates. The famed steakhouse serves USDA Prime, corn-fed, 35-day aged beef. Try the 14-ounce New York strip done medium rare with a choice of sauces (the brandy peppercorn really brings out the beef flavor) or the classic Oscar topped with lump crabmeat and Hollandaise sauce.
Beef has long reigned supreme in the Lone Star State. Beef in Tex-Mex dishes and barbeque joints always tempts the taste buds but it’s steaks, big juicy ones, that draw diners to upscale restaurants, like the slab of steak that the dining room at Salado’s Stagecoach Inn has been serving since 1861. Luckily, you don’t have to go that far afield for a delicious steak, Houston has some of the finest steakhouses you’ll find anywhere. This isn’t an arbitrary “best of” list but we think we’ve put together a pretty good list of ten superb steaks. Consider it a bucket list of steaks. Some darn good ones, and in no particular order. “LASSO YOUR HEART FOR THE PARK” MEMORIAL PARK CONSERVANCY’S ANNUAL GREEN GALA
Ed and Lorraine Wulfe
Andrea and Bill White
More than 400 guests shared their support of Memorial Park Conservancy (MPC) and this year’s honoree Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo for its longstanding support of the Conservancy and the Park. Memorial Park has been the home to the Show’s trailriders for nearly 60 years, and many of its 28,000 volunteers are Houstonians who consider the Park one of our city’s greatest assets. Since Rodeo was this year’s theme, City Kitchen prepared a custom menu that included Crispy South Texas Duck Tacos with Avocados, Trail Ride South Texas Bob White Quail with Ancho Chili Glaze, Jalapeno Cheese Grits, and for dessert Pear and Cranberry Crisp with Bourbon Gelato. Music was provided by Wood & Wire. The Austin, Texas band has a brand-new album that was just released on February 3rd called The Coast. The evening garnered more than $350,000 for MPC.
